Super explorer refit:

Inside the 58m pangaea ocean explorer.

The 58-metre expedition yacht Pangaea Ocean Explorer successfully completed an extensive refit at Rivergate Marina & Shipyard in Brisbane, Australia, in February 2021. With the complete list of works including two new Zenoro 200 kW main generators as well as Xeamos IMO Tier III compliant exhaust after-treatment systems, Pangaea Ocean Explorer is leading the way in increasingly eco-friendly yachting. Here we take a look inside the refit.

Explorer yacht refit The 58.22m Trinity Yachts designed M/Y Pangaea Ocean Explorer is a state-of-the-art deep-water marine research vessel built at Halter Marine in the United States in 1999. With the vessel arriving at Rivergate Marina in December 2020, Xeamos’ official dealer Maritime Professional Solutions (MPS) undertook an Australian-first generator installation aboard the high-tech scientific research vessel as part of a massive refit project over three months.

The installation involved two new Zenoro 200kW main generators and Xeamos IMO Tier III compliant exhaust after-treatment systems with DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) – the very first installation of its kind in Australia.

The complex scope of works undertaken on Pangaea Ocean Explorer impacted most of the vessel’s systems, covering engineering, fabrication, painting, electronics installation and plumbing. Other works included a new 96kw emergency generator and Hamann sewage treatment plant. In addition to the new generators, Kongsberg Multibeam sonar systems were installed to allow the crew to perform hydrographic surveys in shallow waters or deep-water trenches, along with a gondola fixed in the underside of the hull which will be used in deep-sea observation and data collection.

IMO Tier III requirements

Zenoro is the world leader in custom superyacht generators. Their collaboration with Xeamos exhaust treatment systems made it the logical turnkey solution for the highest quality generator systems that meet International Maritime Organisation Tier III requirements for emissions.

“In 2016, IMO Tier III requirements came into effect,” explains Joel Allingham, MPS Director. “This means any new builds or generator refits are required to meet IMO Tier III requirements if the vessel wishes to enter any of the IMO ‘Emission Control Areas, which includes areas in the North American Pacific and Atlantic Coasts, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. These requirements are met by installing exhaust after-treatment systems that incorporate SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). The Zenoro generators installed in Pangaea Ocean Explorer were equipped with Xeamos exhaust treatment systems that included SCR. The Zenoro generator systems power the entire vessel and really are the beating heart of the ship. Therefore, it is important to have the highest quality and most reliable systems in place.”

Xeamos & Zenoro: Rising to the challenge

Several challenges were impacting this ground-breaking installation, but the main issue was space in the engine room. “The owner wanted the installation to be as neat as possible while maintaining serviceability and functionality,” Allingham continues.

“With the inclusion of the Tier III exhaust treatment system, the overall unit size increases. Once assembled, the dimensions of the generators were 2850mm long x 2100mm high x 1210mm wide. “To ensure everything would fit without major modifications to the base structure and engine room layout, we made a 3D model of the engine room and the proposed installation so that the customer could see the final installation and make any required changes or requests prior to the installation commencing.”

Once the go-ahead was given, the team from MPS had to disassemble the generators into sections to allow the machinery to be installed through the aft engine room door, which was only 800mm wide. “Custom girder trolleys and a gantry system had to be designed, manufactured, and installed into the engine room to allow the machinery to be moved around the machinery space. To add to the complexity, the works were all carried out in the water, so everything was transported and lifted onto the vessel by way of barge crane.”

Eco-yachting: the Flourishing Ocean Initiative

Quiet and clean power generation is not just driven by legislation, however. Owners, yacht crew and industry, are all proving a larger and larger appetite for a cleaner and healthier environment. Pangaea Ocean Explorer and her crew are committed to finding strategies to address overfishing, the dumping of plastic, rising sea temperatures and CO2 levels, and supporting the sustainable use of ocean resources and conservation of critical habitats.

The explorer is also a pioneer of the Flourishing Ocean initiative. This initiative aims to engage the best science and latest technologies to halt damage to the ocean’s delicate ecosystems and support initiatives towards its recovery. Boasting high-tech gear, including a dive set up, underwater drones, water sampling equipment and a broadcast suite, Pangaea Ocean Explorer is undoubtedly well equipped to rise to the challenge.

Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest’s Yacht ‘PANGAEA’ Spotted In Sydney Harbour

Boss Hunting

A superyacht owned by Aussie mining magnate and philanthropist, Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest, has been spotted at anchor in Sydney Harbour this week.

The second-richest person in Australia, according to last week’s AFR Rich List (with a net worth of AU$23 billion), owns and operates the 58.2-metre (191ft) explorer yacht ‘PANGAEA’, which is titled after the supercontinent that included all the landmasses before the Triassic separation circa 230 million years ago.

With a beam just short of 11-metres, the yacht can host 12 guests across six suites spread over four decks, with living areas throughout the vessel that resemble a private member’s club.

Each suite is named after a different continent, and some feature walk-in closets and well-appointed ensuites with marbled baths and old-world cabinetry.

Pangeos The Terayacht: World's Largest Floating City

By Heather Collier

Double the size of the Roman Colosseum, Pierpaolo Lazzarini returns with a new, monumental £6.8 billion terayacht concept. The turtle-shaped vessel known as 'Pangeos' is expected to be 550m long and 610m at its widest point. If achieved, this terayacht would become the largest floating structure ever built.

At its peak, Pangeos would be capable of hosting up to 60,000 guests; a floating city for ultra-high-net-worths.

Guests can unwind by staying in one of the many hotels, exploring its plethora of shopping centres, parks, beach clubs, resorts, as well as ship and aircraft ports, according to Italian design studio Lazzarini.

In recent years, Lazzarini has made a name for itself for conjuring up some of the industry's most daring, out-of-this-world concepts, including vessels that can fly, ginormous on-board garages and futuristic ships that push the boundaries of imagination.

They hope the ambitious scheme dating back to 2009 will soon become a reality following an NFT-related crowdfunding initiative to sell virtual spaces on the watercraft. If achieved, the project is said to take a jaw-dropping eight years to build.

Lazzarini have hinted that the vessel would have its very own shipyard built specifically for its creation, and would be launched out of Saudi Arabia.

" A Terayacht needs a Terashipyard ," the designers said. " The conception of a similar-sized vessel, involves the realisation of a specific shipyard/dam infrastructure that floods to levitate the terayacht when it will be launched."

" The imagined Terashipyard infrastructure is 650 metres wide and 600 metres long, providing direct access to the sea. "

With 30 metres of draft, the ship's enormous hull is made up of nine different bows and subdivided into several blocks. The structure also boasts a giant gate aft that allows vessels to enter this floating metropolis.

It would be powered by nine high-temperature superconductor (HTS) engines, each fully electric motor capable of a mind-blowing 16,800hp and powered by various onboard energy sources.

The design team also claim it would be able to use "wings" to cruise without expending too much energy, making this super-structure highly eco-conscious.

" Pushed from a jet drive transmission, the tera-structure will be able to cruise at a speed of five knots ," Lazzarini said.

" While sailing, the large wings will gain energy from the breaking of the waves and Pangeos will cruise perpetually without emissions around the planet Earth's seas.   Further, the rooftop area is lined with solar panels, which provide part of the necessary clean energy to power the terayacht ."

In terms of accommodation, guests will be able to stay in a wide variety of luxury residences, from apartments and houses to "super villas" and royal palaces.

" The virtual spaces of the watercraft can also be purchased under an NFT collection, and users will be able to collect certain content and access the virtual properties with their credentials ," Lazzarini said.

Similar credentials will also be used as a property deposit in case of real construction.

" The terayacht proposal takes its name from Pangea, the supercontinent that existed millions of years ago during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras ," Lazzarini adds.

"The virtual spaces of the watercraft can also be purchased under an NFT collection, and users will be able to collect certain content and access the virtual properties with their credentials" Pierpaolo Lazzarini, Lazzarini Design Studio

Live updates: follow the latest news on Russia-Ukraine

Several luxury yachts owned by wealthy Russians have been detained across Europe this month.

It comes after the West imposed sanctions on oligarchs over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine .

Some have taken evasive action – two such superyachts linked to billionaire Roman Abramovich were spotted approaching the Turkish coast on Tuesday. A group of Ukrainians tried to stop one of the yachts from docking in Turkey.

Chelsea FC owner Mr Abramovich is one of several oligarchs who were added to an EU blacklist last week as governments acted to seize yachts and other luxury assets owned by the billionaires.

Western sanctions resulted in many large vessels relocating from Europe in the past few weeks. Several have headed to places such as the Maldives, which have no extradition treaty with the US.

Where is the Abramovich-owned yacht heading?

Mr Abramovich's yacht Eclipse was seen heading towards Marmaris on Tuesday, according to data compiled by monitoring site Marine Traffic, which was seen by Reuters.

The previous day, his superyacht Solaris was moored in Bodrum, about 80 kilometres from Marmaris, data showed, after skirting waters of EU countries.

There was no suggestion Mr Abramovich was on board either of the yachts.

Which yachts have been detained?

On Monday, a superyacht linked to another Russian billionaire was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar.

The Axioma , believed to belong to Dmitrievich Pumpyansky, moored at Gibraltar on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Reuters TV footage showed.

Mr Pumpyansky, who is under UK and EU sanctions, owns Russia's largest steel pipe maker TMK. Data shows the 72-metre vessel is owned by a British Virgin Islands holding company called Pyrene investments, Reuters reported. An article published as part of the Panama Papers leaks names Mr Pumpyansky as a beneficiary of the holding.

On March 12, the world's biggest sailing yacht, called Sailing Yacht A and owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko , was seized by Italian police.

Several other luxury yachts have also been detained across Europe, including in Gibraltar, Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands and the French coast.

Here are 16 superyachts linked to wealthy Russians

1. Eclipse , a superyacht linked to sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich , was this week spotted heading in the direction of Marmaris in Turkey.

2. Solaris , belonging to Mr Abramovich , moored in Bodrum at the start of the week.

3. The Axioma superyacht, belonging to Russian oligarch Dmitrievich Pumpyansky , who is on the EU's list of sanctioned Russians, was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar on Monday.

4. The Crescent , which was seized by the Spanish government in Tarragona, Spain, on March 17. The ship's owner is not publicly known, although it is believed to belong to Russian Igor Sechin, head of Rosneft Oil in Moscow.

5. Ragnar , owned by former KGB officer and Russian oligarch Vladimir Strzhalkovsky, who is not on the EU sanctions list.

6. Tango , owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg, who was sanctioned by the US on March 11.

7. Lady Anastasia , owned by Russian arms manufacturer Alexander Mijeev, is retained at Port Adriano, Mallorca, as a result of sanctions against Russia and Belarus issued by the European Union.

8. Valerie was seized by the Spanish government in Barcelona, Spain, on March 15. Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the ship is linked to Rostec State Corporation’s chief executive Sergey Chemezov.

9. The $578 million Sailing Yacht A owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko was seized by Italian police in the port of Trieste on March 12.

10. The 156-metre Dilbar superyacht is owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov.

11. La Datcha belongs to Russian billionaire businessman Oleg Tinkov.

12. Lady M , owned by Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov, was seized by Italian police on March 5.

13. Amore Vero was seized in the Mediterranean resort of La Ciotat on March 3 by French authorities. The yacht is linked to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs the Russian oil giant Rosneft.

14. Quantum Blue , owned by a company linked to Russian billionaire Sergei Galitsky, the head of Russian oil giant Rosneft, was seized in southern France on March 3.

15. Superyacht Luna is owned by Russian billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov.

16. Triple Seven is owned by Russian billionaire Alexander Abramov, according to media reports. The yacht was last up for sale in 2020 for €38 million ($41.85 million).

How Royal Romance, a $200-Million Superyacht, Will Benefit Ukraine

By Katherine McLaughlin

Mega yacht Royal Romance is 93 meters long and 14.3 meters wide anchored in Rijeka harbor

Though superyachts are often seen as the frivolous toys of the wildly rich, one named Royal Romance could soon provide more than just a lavish vacation for those who can afford it. According to The Guardian , a $200-million superyacht once owned by Russian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk will soon be put up for auction, with the sale funds going directly to supporting the people of Ukraine.

Medvedchuk, who is currently under sanctions, was arrested in Ukraine in April, though he was sent back to Russia in September through a prisoner exchange. The superyacht was seized in March of this year in Croatia as part of Western-imposed restrictions on the assets of oligarchs. According to the British paper, a Croatian court has recently ruled that the boat can be transferred to a special branch of the Ukrainian government, the Ukrainian Asset Recovery and Management Agency (Arma), and sold at auction to maintain its economic value.

Royal Romance was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and built in 2015 by Dutch shipbuilders Feadship. Seymour Diamond was responsible for the ship’s interiors. Fit to hold 14 guests and 22 crew members, the 318-foot vessel also includes many notable amenities, including a swimming pool, gym, 3D cinema room, and fully equipped spa.

Though multiple superyachts have been seized over the past months, this is the first to be auctioned with the funds going directly to Ukrainian people. In September , a yacht owned by Dmitry Pumpyansky was auctioned off, but the sale went to J.P. Morgan, which claimed Pumpyansky owed the investment firm $21.75 million. Though it’s possible more of the seized  yachts will be auctioned to support Ukraine in the future, as The New York Times reported, seizing and auctioning off assets is rarely a straightforward process. In the United States the Justice Department is working to expedite the process, but it can still take years.
