Neel Trimarans is a young French company which broke new ground in 2009 with a prototype 50 footer and then managed to establish their 45 in a world where the catamaran occupies a predominant position. Now there’s a new challenge. Neel have just launched a 65 foot trimaran, shown for the first time at Cannes Boat Show. We took a trip on board in early June for an amazing test sail.

The founder of Neel Trimarans is an experienced sailor and businessman. Having become the French sports catamaran champion in 1987, a specialist in Class C, he started at Fountaine-Pajot and launched the Corneel 26. A French development, blending the American Stiletto and the Danish Mycat, this little cat was a combining of the cruising cat and the sports cat, and an efficient and playful little machine which introduced the concept to many future multihull enthusiasts. Following this commercial success, over the next 25 years Eric reinforced the development of the yard, being in charge of exports, and then becoming Vice Director-General. He took a bit of a step back in the early 2000s to get involved with the new M50 class at the helm of his Trilogic, in which he won The Transat in 2004 and came second in the 2006 Route du Rhum, before launching himself into the adventure that is Neel Trimarans.

The NEEL trimarans workshop has presented its first NEEL 65, the flagship of its range. The first unit of the series was launched on May 28 in La Rochelle.

The NEEL 65 has inherited all the qualities of its predecessors in terms of comfort, excellent sailing characteristics, the finesse of its steering and its high performance. This new model has six double cabins aboard, with six bathrooms.

The unique design places two cabins on a single level, shared with the living room and a large central open kitchen. There are two cabins in the central hull and a cabin in each float. Separated areas are built-in for the comfort of guests and crew. 110 square metres (1200 sq ft) surface area in total.

The layout is highly practical, with reserved living areas, along with a generous carrying capacity, and a unique design that meets all the requirements of charter operation with a full crew.

On the deck the wide cockpit (25 m2) with its outdoor kitchen, exclusive to the NEEL 65, are found alongside the spacious storage bins for leisure equipment (canoeing, windsurfing, paddleboards) in the skirts of the floats for quick and direct access to the sea.

The Flybridge is a convivial space of 21 m2 with a double helm and a table for eight, with seating convertible into sun loungers.

The NEEL 65 will have its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival from 8 to 13 September 2015.

• Performance – fast in the standard version, even more powerful with optional carbon mast, textile standing rigging and hydrodynamic sails
• Single-level living, owner suite on main deck with panoramic view

Unique to the flagship of the range:

• A huge COCKLOON (concept created and registered trademark by NEEL Trimarans, successful marriage of Cockpit and Saloon), with a capacity of up to 14 guests in sit-down dining configuration
• A second lounge in front of the saloon offers a new conviviality area on board, with a sea view sofa
• Convertible layout for the central saloon (benches or tatami mattress, high table or coffee table)
• Innovative, spacious and ingenious kitchen, sea-facing and seamlessly integrated into the living space, unusually large worktop surfaces and numerous storage volumes
• A larger master cabin on the main deck
• A new access to the central hull leading to a new layout
• Enhanced material quality and optimized overall finishes

The NEEL 65 is a lightweight craft with sleek lines and all the sailing qualities of its smaller brother the NEEL 45, including outstanding performance, responsive handling and excellent comfort while underway.

Interior ambiance:

• The interior is the impressive work of Franck Darnet Design, combining a contemporary feel with sophisticated and refined materials, resulting in a ‘sporty chic’ aesthetic.
• The elegant saloon cabin offers a wide panoramic view. The main living area is on the same level as the cabins, allowing functional and fluid movement around the interior, which is unique for a cruising multihull. The central kitchen is equipped with a fabulous bar area that is ideal for entertaining..
• The trimaran’s two tables (one of which is convertible into a cocktail table) can host up to twelve guests. The two L-shaped sofas face each other in a highly comfortable volume. A large chart table is situated in the centre, looking out to sea with panoramic view of 220°.
• The owner’s suite is majestic, boasting a large double bed with a view of the horizon through a 2.5m wide bay window. Light fills the space, inviting the outside world into its embrace.
• The cabin has a separate toilet and a bathroom with shower looking out to sea through a vertical panel.
• Each of the other cabins has its own private bathroom with toilet.

Exterior Design:

• Access to the cockpit is through a wide sliding glass door. The large table accommodates 10 guests comfortably seated on a U-shaped bench.
• The cockpit has a kitchen with sink, fridge and hotplate, and there is a superb sunbathing area to starboard.
• The skirt of the central hull platform offers a large 2.5m x 2m swimming deck equipped with a swim ladder.
• At the aft of the main hull is a space for storing the dinghy in order to protect it from inclement whether while sailing.
• At the rear of the side floats are stowage bins for leisure facilities (canoes, windsurfing or paddle board gear) with quick and direct access to the sea by the skirts.
• Access to the flybridge is via a staircase from the cockpit, providing extra security.
• This communal area of 33m2 contains both the helm and a table for eight people with a bench convertible into a wide sunbathing zone. The helm groups all systems for manoeuvering and does not impede on the comfort of the guests.
• Each side float has large deck access hatches to extra space which can serve as storage for sails or diving equipment (compressor)

A “High Performance” option is also available with a net weight saving of 1.1 tonnes.

• Carbon mast with rail and trolleys and harken ball races, carbon canoe boom, textile standing rigging , Dyneema running rigging, pulpit carbon helm wheel, mainsail, genoa and staysail in Hydranet (Spectra / Dacron) Genaker and gennaker fittings, winches Harken Performa, fixtures in composite core.

The NEEL 65 is very easy to operate, even with a reduced crew, thanks to deck equipment and electric winch control at the helm on the flybridge. Remote control of the engine and bow thruster from the flybridge facilitates docking manoeuvres.

A “High Performance” option is available with a net weight saving of 1.1 tonnes.
