The largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos

  • Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
  • In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
  • These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

Insider Today

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

my star yacht owner

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

my star yacht owner

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

my star yacht owner

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

my star yacht owner

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

my star yacht owner

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

my star yacht owner

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

my star yacht owner

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

my star yacht owner

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

my star yacht owner

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

Sindhu Sundar contributed to an earlier version of this story.

Correction: May 6, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated Giovanna Vitelli's title. She is the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, not a vice president.

the-63-metre-lurssen-explorer-yacht-was-refitted-by-mb92-in-2016

Polar Star: How a 63m Lürssen explorer yacht was reborn

There’s usually chaos before the calm of a superyacht launch — or relaunch. The planks, tarpaulins, the entrails of electrical systems, dusty contractors wedged under and behind things; no matter how many times you see the endgame of a superyacht project, it seems inconceivable that they’ll pull it off in time.

Polar Star , moored up at MB92 in Barcelona, was a maelstrom of activity in November. Built in 2005 and bought by her current owner in 2007, she had a thorough refit in 2015 and was back at the Spanish yard for some warranty work and edits to the sauna, before heading to the Caribbean.

It is a testament to those behind this extraordinary project that Polar Star met her deadline. But then this is a team adept at recognising the changes that will make the biggest difference using the lightest touch. The total project time was nine months; the interior team FM Architettura d’Interni , which fabricates most of its products from scratch, had just seven.

“Our approach is cosmetic,” says Francesca Muzio, co-founder of the company. “We don’t modify the structure because, if you start with a very intensive, aggressive approach, it costs money and time.” And she should know, having spent 10 years as design director of CRN .

Luckily they had an Espen Øino -designed, well-maintained Lürssen to work with, so there weren’t many worries on the structural side. The biggest edits to the guts of Polar Star were the electrics, electronics, audiovisual, plumbing and exhausts. Changes to the structure were mostly limited to exterior areas. The contemporary layout was fine as it was.

But the country house-style décor needed a total rethink. The guiding principles from Muzio were “cleaner, purer, softer” and — fittingly for an explorer yacht — the owners requested a design that was more in tune with the ocean environment.

The most literal examples of this are the stairwell carpets, designed and made by FM Architettura d’Interni, and rippled and coloured to resemble the Caribbean Sea, and the hand-stitched leather handrails that blend in with the beach club atmosphere on board Polar Star .

But the colour palette throughout Polar Star is a delicate silver grey, with aquamarine and bronze accents. The yellow tone of the varnished oak panelling has been muted and cooled with a bleach wash, while wallpapers by Venetian company Rubelli have a subtle silvery shimmer.

The deeper aim of the revamp was to streamline Polar Star ’s interior, making it more usable and, as Muzio notes, “increasing the perception of the volume”.

The main saloon is a case in point. Heavy floor-length curtains (which also featured on other levels) used to block out the edges of the window frames, even when drawn. These have been replaced with cream blinds that make the most of what the massive windows have to offer. Even when closed for privacy, the blinds’ semi-translucent composition floods the space with light.

Rugs have also gone, revealing new grey parquet that makes the space lighter and seem wider. A large round of squashy taupe sofas to starboard has been replaced with a more structured white version. Pale blue scatter cushions pick up the tone of a spectacular central mosaic designed by FM Architettura d’Interni and built by DG Mosaic, which draws the eye all the more for the simplification of its surroundings.

In front of the seating area is a glamorous cabinet in shagreen with custom-made marble mosaic handles. It stores audiovisual equipment and above it is a 65-inch cinema screen, while to port a secondary seating area has been replaced with a smart bar.

Forward, a seldom-used superyacht office has become a massage room with backlit furniture and a practical vinyl floor. The area has been transformed from one where you could sit or work, to one in which you can lounge, watch a film, socialise at the bar or have a massage.

The owner’s deck saloon has a more glamorous edge, thanks to etched mirror-front cabinets that gleam in daylight or the glow from the marble fireplace. And thought has gone into a few smaller edits.

To aft, for example, the corners of two cabinets blocked the view from seating areas to the windows. These were scooped out to create recessed plinths — spaces for flower arrangements that free up sightlines and maximise light flow.

In the owner's cabin , forward on the same deck, more wardrobe space was needed. “We put this partition wall [behind the bed], pushed the bed forward 60cm, which is nothing, because there was a lot of space in front,” says Muzio. “And we gained all these wardrobes.”

Not a team to miss a decorative opportunity, that partition is covered in leather cut and moulded with a flower motif. They removed a bath to create two equal-sized shower rooms and made a little office to starboard in the cabin.

The main deck guest cabins now have their own decorative leather headboards and muted wallpapers, and while most marble in the en suites has been retained — “it was pointless taking something out that was good,” says Van Wyk — fittings were updated and the only bathroom was made a shower room so that all four cabin facilities matched.

The crew layout on board Polar Star was already voluminous and functional, so the cabins just needed new door panels and curtains. The superyacht wheelhouse had more of a revamp. “All new screens. All the radars have been redone, new gyros, all new controls,” lists Van Wyk.

At the aft end of the bridge deck is a superyacht gym , which got new flooring and a storage rethink. “Before, things were stowed in different areas, it wasn’t built-in and then you’ve got heavy items rolling around. Now it’s really practical and they use it,” says Van Wyk.

Out on the bridge aft deck, the exterior edits begin, as notable for what was preserved as much as for what was changed from Polar Star’s previous incarnation. Replacing the hexagonal superyacht spa pool with a contemporary square allows space for large sunpads either side.

The only obstacles were the round skylights in the deck where these would sit — so they created sunpads with holes in them. They still function as skylights but the cushion holes can also be used as ice bucket holders. “And we made a round cushion that we could put in if they want to close it up,” says Van Wyk. They also added two types of bar — one for chin-ups and one for drinking.

More significantly, Polar Star ’s aft platform was extended to Øino’s design. “It was only 1.1 metre in depth, now it’s 3.3 metres,” says Van Wyk. Øino adds: “It has lots of benefits at a relatively modest cost. Not just space benefits but speed, noise.”

The new sauna is just inside a door from here — the capacity did not change but the original was replaced by a modern version built by Klafs. Forward, up broad central stairs from the platform, the main deck aft used to be primarily for tender storage . Now there is a neat round of seating, with the tenders shielded behind wooden louvres. “So they have a sauna, then they can take an aperitif here,” says Muzio.

But the superyacht sundeck is the most dramatically transformed exterior space. The design team removed the hatch that used to provide access to the deck from the central internal staircase and made the external side staircase the main point of entry.

“My biggest concern was the new hardtop, because it’s about 60 square metres — it’s huge,” says Van Wyk. “It would have been at least 3.6 tonnes with aluminium. It was just impossible, we could not do it. So we could only use carbon fibre. We probably came in at about 1.1 tonnes.”

That was a weight difference small enough to balance out by losing weight elsewhere, for example all the furniture up top is carbon, too.

But it wasn’t just the hardtop — which opens up “like a car roof” to give light when desired. Essentially the whole sundeck was remade because, as Muzio puts it, the owner never went up there.

Forward, beneath the hardtop, is a long bar, fronted with what Muzio calls “bubble glass”, designed by FM Architettura d’Interni and built by the project’s exterior carpenter Vedder, and lit from beneath.

On the other side of this, the area is split between a broad sunpad space for lounging and a seating area with two long tables that can be converted into dining tables.

In terms of Polar Star ’s exterior look, the dark blue hull has been replaced by a muted light brown. “We couldn’t quite find the right brown,” says Muzio, “the ones in the catalogue were too brown or too yellow or too red.” Then they came across a flowerpot that was just the right shade, and they sent it to Pinmar and Awlgrip, who reproduced the colour exactly.

“It’s now called Polar Star brown,” adds Van Wyk. Øino approves of the resulting effect, which draws out his lines. “It is interesting to what extent colours are important,” he says. “From the outside you can’t really see various changes — two metres more on the stern platform or that gazebo structure — when you’re down on the water. The deckhouse is a darker brown, which gives a depth or contrast between the hull and rest of the boat. And the windows in that darker colour disappear a bit.”

So now the yacht is finished, how does the owner feel about her? He initially asked Muzio to pen the interior so he could sell Polar Star complete with redesign drawings. But he liked the ideas so much that he decided to do the refit himself. And he likes the result so much that he’s keeping Polar Star for private use.

“There is no greater feeling than sitting on the refreshed sundeck at night, watching a film by starlight for example, or retiring to the improved owner’s cabin to relax and enjoy a renewed sense of space, peace and the panoramic views,” he says.

It’s certainly a swift change of plans, but it’s hardly a surprise from a superyacht refit project that was all about maximum impact in minimum time.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is mulling going undercover to detect individuals who rent their vehicles to foreigners without a driving licence.

JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said they would also use social media to find those involved in such activities.

"We will get our personnel to monitor social media for advertisements and go undercover as potential clients.

"This is in order to detect those who were willing to rent their vehicles to foreigners who do not have valid driver's licences," he told reporters at a joint operation at the Duta Toll Plaza on Friday (May 17).

JPJ director-general Datuk Rospiagos Taha, JPJ deputy director-general (planning and operations) Aedy Fadly Ramli and Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Mohd Zaki Ismail were also present.

He said this after they detected a car being driven by a foreigner without a valid driver's license during the operations.

"When we questioned the driver, he told us he rented the vehicle to drive to Penang and back.

"We will be calling the owner of the vehicle to help us with further investigations into this case," he said.

He said they also detected an individual using a fake licence during the operation.

"While this motorist was issued a summons for using a fake document, we will also be conducting further checks to see where he acquired it from," he said.

Zaki said they checked a total of 3,630 vehicles during the operations and took action against 318 of them.

"A total of 143 personnel from JPJ, the police Traffic Investigations and Enforcement Department, Immigration Department, National Anti Drug Agency and Environment Department were involved in the operations which began at around 8pm.

"We seized eight motorcycles and 15 cars for various offences. The National Anti-Drug Agency also checked 37 individuals and detained 10 of them for testing positive for methamphetamines and ganja.

"The Immigration Department also made seven arrests for various immigration offences during the operations," he said adding that a total of 416 summonses were issued by his department during the operations.

After Living Much of Life at Sea, Captain Sandy Finds Love on Land

Sandy Yawn of “Below Deck Mediterranean” married Leah Shafer on — what else? — a superyacht in Florida.

Ms. Yawn, in a white suit, sits on the couch of a yacht with crossed legs. She has her arms around Ms. Shafer, who is wearing a white gown. They are looking at each other and smiling.

By Tammy LaGorce

Sandra Dolores Yawn has been locked up, left for dead on a Florida highway and chased through the Red Sea by pirates.

In the summer of 2018, Leah Rae Shafer reached out on Facebook to send Ms. Yawn her blessings. Not because she thought Ms. Yawn, who goes by Captain Sandy, needed her well wishes, but because she had started watching “Below Deck Mediterranean” on Bravo.

The show follows a crew tasked with catering to a revolving cadre of guests who have chartered a superyacht. Ms. Yawn, a star of the series, is at the helm. Ms. Shafer had written to congratulate her on the show’s success. There was another reason, too. “I thought she was hot,” she said.

Ms. Yawn, 59, has been a yacht captain for more than 30 years. Her foray into television, which started in 2017, was not exactly foreordained. Until her mid-20s, “I was a mess,” Ms. Yawn said. “I was always in trouble. I got kicked out of 11th grade. I didn’t go to college.” At 13, at the start of an adolescence spent between Dundee, Fla., where her father lived, and Bradenton, Fla., where her mother lived, she started drinking. By 17, “I was getting arrested so many times I couldn’t even count how many,” she said. Usually a parent bailed her out. Her father’s refusal to do so after one drunken incident landed her a night in jail.

In 1989, when she was 25, the revolving door of South Florida treatment centers she had been pushing through quit spinning when a counselor told her she couldn’t return. “She said, ‘Sandy, as soon as you get some money in your pocket you’re going to start drinking again,’” Ms. Yawn said.

Fearing real jail time, she joined Alcoholics Anonymous. To start paying off the thousands of dollars she owed in legal fees and addiction treatment center bills, she got a job washing boats in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. By 30, she had earned her captain’s license from Maritime Professional Training, a school in Fort Lauderdale for mariners and yachting professionals.

Rehab — she still has an A.A. sponsor and attends meetings whenever possible — helped her pin down the roots of her teenage rebellion. “I think a big part of my drinking was that I couldn’t accept my sexuality,” she said. “When I got sober is when I accepted that, oh my gosh, I actually prefer women.”

For Ms. Shafer, that level of acceptance took much longer. It also cost her a career as a gospel singer.

Ms. Shafer, 50, is the entrepreneur behind a skin care line, Skin by Leah, and a jewelry business started with a friend, Cuff Me. When she messaged Ms. Yawn to congratulate her on the success of “Below Deck Mediterranean” in 2018, she and her husband of 20 years, then living with their teenage daughter in Denver, were going through a divorce. The relationship had gone stale years earlier, Ms. Shafer said, but fear and uncertainty prevented her from leaving.

“I had the security of not worrying financially, because he took care of everything,” she said. Her gospel career at a nondenominational church had taken off when she was still in high school in Hesperia, Calif. But that was mostly a labor of love.

“I toured and went to college at the same time,” said Ms. Shafer, who graduated from California State University, Northridge, with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts.

By her 30s, she was recording albums, touring megachurches and singing at major Christian conferences. A flirtation with secular performance in the 2000s landed her on the 2003-04 revival of “Star Search” and later a recurring role on NBC’s “The Singing Bee.”

But “I loved God and I loved inspiring people, and the platform I was given was on the stage of churches,” she said. The only problem: “There was really no money in that.”

Before their divorce was final in 2019, she and her husband tried therapy and prayed together. Finally, in 2018, “I just jumped,” she said. “I took a leap of faith. I wanted freedom.”

She found it financially first. Skin by Leah Studio, her Lone Tree, Colo. facial salon that she founded in 2017, was successful right away, she said. When she first saw Ms. Yawn on TV, she was settling into life as an entrepreneur. She didn’t expect to get a response to her Facebook message. But when she got one three months later, in October 2018, it came with an invitation.

In addition to her job as a TV star, Ms. Yawn had started touring with “I Believe,” a series of motivational talks she created to inspire women in leadership positions. When she finally read Ms. Shafer’s message — thousands had been piling up, she said, but something drew her to Ms. Shafer’s — she was in the market for an entertainer for the talks.

In her message, Ms. Shafer had included a video of herself singing the national anthem at a 2014 Denver Broncos game. Once Ms. Yawn clicked the link, she replied right away. “She gave me her phone number and said, ‘I heard you sing,’” Ms. Shafer said. “‘Let’s meet up and talk about how we can do something together.’”

The two continued to talk on the phone and over email. Ms. Yawn was then living in Los Angeles. Ms. Shafer had been planning a Disneyland vacation with her daughter, Lauren, in November, a trip that gave her an excuse to meet Ms. Yawn in person.

Both say they fell in love seconds after Ms. Shafer pulled into Ms. Yawn’s driveway in mid-November 2018. “I offered to park her car for her, and that’s when we hugged,” Ms. Yawn said. “I felt this energy I had never felt. I knew I had to pay attention to that.”

It was a life-changing hug for Ms. Shafer, too. “It was not a normal feeling when I met Sandy,” she said. “She wasn’t the stern captain you see on TV. She was just so fun and so beautiful. That hug melted me.”

Over dinner at Catch, a Los Angeles seafood restaurant, they acknowledged their attraction. “I was really honest with her,” Ms. Yawn said. But Ms. Shafer wasn’t ready to date a woman. “I knew I wanted to be with her,” she said. “I was just freaked out.”

By the end of the evening, Ms. Yawn told her she should take her time. It had been two years since Ms. Yawn’s last relationship. “So at that point I was like, ‘Why rush it?’” she said. “I was older and I’ve learned a lot of lessons. One was, let things happen naturally. Slow and steady wins the race.”

Six months later, the race was over. The women were in a committed relationship, and Ms. Yawn had moved to a place near Ms. Shafer’s in Denver. It was smooth sailing until the end of 2019, when news of the couple’s relationship started circulating in entertainment media.

The public outing ended Ms. Shafer’s gospel career. “I knew the minute I came out as being in love with a woman it would be over, and it was,” she said. Her six CDs, sold in dozens of church bookstores, were pulled from shelves and shipped to her doorstep. Christian radio stations stopped playing her music.

“I had worked for 35 years,” she said. “And it was over.”

Most painful of all were comments after her father’s death from Covid in 2020. “People in the church told me he died because of my sins,” she said. “But he had met and come to accept Sandy before he passed, and I thank God that happened.” Now, “my family adores Sandy.”

Ms. Yawn lost both her parents to heart attacks before she became a TV star — her father in 2006, and her mother in 2009. In 2015, she was en route to the Miami Boat Show on her motorcycle when she was hit by a car. The driver left the scene. “I felt my mother’s presence while I was flipping through the air, and I felt peaceful,” she said.

When she hit the pavement, she had a fractured pelvis and her foot “was on sideways,” she said. By then, though, she was used to navigating life and death scenarios, including fires at sea and run-ins with pirates. She credits her fortitude and empathy, qualities highlighted on “Below Deck Mediterranean,” which she joined in 2017, to her sobriety. “I’ve got nothing to hide and everything to share,” she said.

In 2022, Ms. Yawn and Ms. Shafer bought a house together in Parker, Colo. In September 2023, while Ms. Yawn was filming in Greece, Ms. Shafer flew overseas to visit. Ms. Yawn proposed with a diamond engagement ring on the beach , with violin players in the background.

On May 11, Ms. Shafer and Ms. Yawn were married in Fort Lauderdale aboard She’s a 10 Too, a superyacht lent to the couple by their friend Carolyn Aronson. Fifty-five guests, the maximum allowed aboard the vessel, were in attendance. Among them were “Below Deck Mediterranean” castmates Aesha Scott, Kate Chastain and Dave White, known to viewers as Chef Dave. (And yes, there were cameras filming.)

Ms. Shafer, in a long white wedding gown by Leah Da Gloria, walked down the aisle with her two brothers, Matthew Dale and Justin Dale, to an altar decorated with white roses and hydrangeas; her daughter, now 18, was her maid of honor.

Ms. Yawn, in a white Veronica Beard suit, was escorted down the aisle by Mark Dunham, her brother-in-law. Michelle Dunham, Ms. Yawn’s sister, was her maid of honor. Most guests were barefoot, as is common on yachts. The brides and their wedding party were granted an exception.

Nadine Rajabi, the showrunner of “Below Deck Mediterranean,” who is ordained by the Universal Life Church, married them on the yacht’s bridge aft deck, a job made more difficult by the weather: wind caused her microphone to cut out and blew the pages of her speech around. But nothing could disturb the focus of the brides as they read handwritten vows.

Ms. Shafer told Ms. Yawn that she had taught her to be more optimistic, more playful and “to jump.” Ms. Yawn told Ms. Shafer that she had given her patience and grace.

The captain had been hoping to make it through the ceremony free of tears. But that, she said shortly after they were pronounced married, was impossible. “The minute I looked at Leah and started reading her all the reasons I fell in love with her I started to cry,” she said. “It’s so amazing to find this kind of love in your lifetime.”

Rescue Mission The couple chose “She’s a Lady” for their first dance during an onboard reception. Chef Dave prepared short ribs and a three-tiered, gluten-free vanilla, chocolate and strawberry cake that threatened to topple in the wind and heat (temperatures were in the 90s).

Cruising After the wedding, the brides took off for a five-day honeymoon to Little Palm Island on a yacht lent by Mr. Flynn. Ms. Yawn was at the helm, of course.

Onward In June, Ms. Yawn and Ms. Shafer will move from Denver to Ponte Vedra, Fla., to be closer to Ms. Dunham, who runs a private school for children with autism, Jacksonville School for Autism, in Jacksonville. On June 3, season nine of “Below Deck Mediterranean” premieres on Bravo. And on July 1, Ms. Shafer will open a skin care studio in Ponte Vedra.

An earlier version of this article misidentified   the man who escorted Sandy Yawn down the aisle. It was Mark Dunham, her brother-in-law, not her friend John Flynn. An earlier version of a picture caption also misidentified Mr. Dunham as Mr. Flynn. Additionally, the article misstated   the shoe rule aboard   the superyacht on which the wedding was held. The brides and their wedding party were allowed to wear shoes; other guests were not.
