100 years, countless memories for the Balboa Yacht Club

The centennial celebration at Balboa Yacht Club included a fireworks display on Saturday night.

The Balboa Yacht Club kicked off its centennial Saturday night during its annual installation of new officers and end-of-year meeting, with 200 members enjoying dinner and fireworks at what Centennial Committee chair Stacie Brandt said would be the first of many upcoming celebrations.

“We have all-year events,” said Brandt. “There’s a lunch in March, a ball in April and a regatta in August.”

According to Brandt, a group of men from the Newport Harbor Yacht Club who wanted to focus more on small-boat sailing in 1922 founded the Southland Sailing Club, which became the Balboa Yacht Club in 1928.

A 1938 small boat regatta on the southeast corner of Little Balboa Island.

With its prime location near the entrance to the Newport Harbor on Bayside Drive in Corona del Mar, the club sits directly across the water from the second clubhouse on Little Balboa Island. “They found a beach cottage on the [Balboa] Peninsula, which was their first clubhouse,” said Brandt. “Their second clubhouse, between 1926 and 1941, was on the [southeast] tip of Little Balboa Island until their lease ran out, and they built the current club in 1941.”

Many of the attendees at the event had positive things to say about their club memberships, some of which extend back decades.

Russell Miller, who had worked at Balboa Yacht Club as the food and beverage manager from 2008 until 2014, said he felt lucky to come back as the club’s general manager in 2019.

“It is immensely satisfying to me that I get to celebrate the club’s centennial year with the people who, outside of my family, mean the most to me in my life,” said Miller. “BYC is truly an exceptional club filled with exceptional people.”

Balboa Yacht Club Commodore Paul Blank, left, and Senior Staff Commodore Morrie Kirk.

Morrie Kirk, who has been boating since he was 3 years old and has been an active member of the club since 1969, is the senior staff commodore and oldest staff commodore. He was commodore in 1977.

“The biggest change is in the city and how much it’s grown,” said Kirk. “The club is very much the same, we’re a boating club, friendly, family-oriented club, same location since 1941.”

Kirk explained that the club was originally all sailing, and today there are more powerboats than sailboats. The current membership of 600 has changed over the years due to attrition, but the club still has 50 members who joined the club more than 50 years ago.

On Saturday, Kirk was selected by the incoming commodore, Paul Blank, to be the “installing officer” to relieve the current board of responsibilities and introduce the new commodore.

“I chose him because he’s a great man, a good friend, has contributed greatly to BYC through several decades and has the most seniority among the staff commodores,” Blank said.

Blank, a Corona del Mar resident and the Newport Harbormaster, has been a member of the club for 37 years. “The location is excellent, friendship built from shared passion on the water activities that I have not found at other clubs,” he said. “The camaraderie, support, improved seamanship, adventures near and far, small and large, all trying to make each other better.”

While boating innovation has changed over the last 100 years, the shared passion for water activities among members remains consistent.

The Balboa Yacht Club has been located on Bayside Drive in Corona del Mar since 1941.

Blank has seen changes in manufactured-boating styles and opportunities for boating innovation, such as speed and vessel foiling, like hydrofoil sailboats flying out of water. “Boating has changed, style, availability and increased variety,” said Blank. “What has remained consistent is the passion for getting out on the water no matter what the vessel is.”

A burnished wood plaque from 1926 that hangs today over the present club’s dining room fireplace reflects that attitude. The first commodore, Isaac B. Potter, originally donated the plaque, which includes a quote from 20th U.S. President James A. Garfield that calls for gutsiness, courage and determination to meet danger or difficulty: “A pound of pluck is worth a ton of luck.”

Balboa Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Happened upon this place walking along canal pathway and we had beers and I had an extraordinary iced margarita. We enjoyed it so much we stayed for supper. Adam, aged 19, had a super burger and fries which he totally rated. I had corvina, a... local white fish, pan fried with fries a salad ans the fish was simply delicious and perfectly cooked, and my husband rated his greek salad 7 out of 10 ( he ate my fries). The service was exceptional. We walked there from the bio museum, it's a great walk. More

What a show! We were here on a Thursday evening between 4-7pm. We saw at least 8 ships entering and exiting the Panama Canal as well as a number of yachts of different sizes. It was also fascinating to watch workers from the ships disembarking... at the end of a workday. They were dropped off at the dock across from the restaurant, some carrying welding equipment others with their luggage. There were fishermen who had chartered a yacht for the day. The crew on the boat were feeding what was left of the catch to a very excited flock of birds of different species. The sunset was spectacular. And there are a number of lovely cats patrolling the grounds. Plus, there was live music the night we were there. A couple of wonderful musicians on their way to the Boquete Jazz festival. And for us, great music meant dancing! It’s a very casual place and with the proximity to the water it has the feel of a tropical beach bar. Greatly appreciated as Panama City is so very urban and a vacation here can kinda feel just like summer at home. The service was great, the food was decent (we had pub food, you can’t go wrong) The facilities were clean. The prices were very fair for a waterfront location. Everything is outside and Panama’s perpetual breeze will keep you comfortable. We loved it! More

The total renovation of the bar/grill looks great and gives a very stylish vibe to the canal front location. The menu is primarily seafood but the prime-rib burger I had was excellent and my spouse, the lovely Louise, was very happy with her lamgostinos in... a Thai sauce. Service was prompt but was a little confusing as we had four different people attend us. Chalk it up to being the second night open with a totally new crew. All in, worth a visit. $$ More

I have been a frequent customer for years, however tonight was the last time I will ever set foot in this establishment. I was here with two friends who came to visit from out of town. The trouble began when it was time to pay... our bill. Their entire system was down, which meant that we could not pay by credit card and had to pay by cash only. I don’t know if it was down the entire evening, but if it was, they did not tell us this before we sat down to eat. My friends and I did not have enough cash on us to cover the entire bill. We were extremely patient and waited more than 45 minutes for their system to come back online. I felt waiting close to an hour was more than enough time. Since there is no ATM on premises and no bank nearby, I offered the manager my business card for my business that I own and manage, my personal cell phone number, and my government issued ID number and promised to come back the following day with cash in case their system was still not working. He replied with: “You aren’t going anywhere. Call someone who can bring you some money.” His disrespectful response set me off and we began to argue. I explained to him that I am clearly not a flight risk since I was providing him with so much personal information. I told him that I would love to pay the bill, but their system is not working. What are the options? His reply: “You are not leaving this place. You are going to figure out a way to pay me or I am calling the cops on you.” At that point, our waiter tried to diffuse the situation and this manager began to shout at the waiter and berate him in our presence. By then I’d had enough. I told the manager that I would be back in the morning and tried to leave. He followed us out to my car and stood behind the car to prevent me from leaving while he called the police. The police arrived and would not allow me to leave. They said that despite the fact that the system at Balboa Yacht Club was down, it was my responsibility to figure out a way to pay the bill. The most they would do is give one of my friends a ride to the nearest ATM machine, which is 3-4 miles away. To make matters worse, they took her there and left her alone, in the middle of the night, to find her way back to the establishment. By the time my friend returned two nightmarish hours had passed. In those two hours, I repeatedly asked for this manager’s name and he refused to provide it. Before leaving I decided to take his picture in order to report him to corporate. When I took the picture he threatened me with legal action and called the police again requesting that they return to arrest me for taking his picture. Balboa Yacht Club used to be the place I would take all my friends and family when they come to Panama to visit. I’ve also brought and fellow business people here for lunch meetings. As a business owner, I would never treat my customers that way. As a contributing member of society, I am hurt and offended that I was spoken to in such an abusive and insulting manner and had the police called to arrest me as if I was trying to break the law. I will never spend another cent at Balboa Yacht Club and I will share this experience with anyone who mentions the establishment. More

Most of the positve Trip Advisor ratings are wiritten by the staff at the at the encouragement of the Managemen so we are informed. We do not know if it is true. Unsanitary bathrooms. Over priced go to Fridays Cayucos or Bennigans for Happy Hour... much cheaper. We like to go to the Balboa Yacht club on a Sunday afternoon on the way back from the beach to our home in the city. It's a nice position , watch the ships go by, relax and have a beer. Food is pretty basic... but ok, typical Panama food, fried fish..fried patacones , burgers etc and quite expensive for the type if food. I like red wine but for some reason they don't always have it which I find incredible. They do Sangria but this is really a poor offering of a great Spanish classic. .I think they get the sangria in a box from the supermarket 2 50 dollars a litre and pass it to you for 4 dollars a small glass..one of the most unpleasant sides is when you get your bill.. I really object to having the tip included in the final figure especially when the law here in Panama has just changed and now it is completely optional based on the quality of service, which I am sorry to say is pretty dismal. Wrong food brought, wrong drinks brought, trying to drag the waiters away from their wattsapp or talking to each other is lesson in pure patience. Last week the bill came...EVENTUALLY. and written on it was the final price including the tip....25 % tip....and after serving wrong food, wrong drinks and no red wine. ..And then arguing with the waiter about the 25 % tip which he assured me was only 10% but i had to pay it......I don't think so and of course will not be bullied into paying for anything gratuitous if the service is not good. Its a great way for the management to not pay fair wages , just put the money onto the bills, and i guess the majority of people dont check themThey need to get their waiters and waitresses into gear , not try and add extra costs to the bills for the clients to pay...SO DO CHECK YOUR BILL...TIPS OR PROPINAS ARE NOT MANDATORY .. If you get good service and want to pay a tip then perfect, but don't be bullied into paying a tip if the service is bad. ...we won't go back ..... More

The setting and view are outstanding: open air seating with great views of the marina and container ships coming and going from the Canal. The service was the worst I've had in Panama since traveling there in 2002. The servers were surly, rude, unfriendly, and... absent. Ah, but they're union employees so can't be fired! Even the local expat crowd just laughs about how really atrocious the service is, because they're close to their boats. As for the food, I can't say for 100% certain, but the only thing my husband and I ate that evening was their ceviche and we both got sick. There are other great choices nearby, go there instead. Enjoyed our dinner at Balboa Yacht club very much! Loved the décor and location, very chill and laid back. Ida, our server, was very nice and accommodating! The food was good but really loved the atmosphere.

We have eaten 6 different times here and had 1 decent meal. It's expensive, the food is just ok and the service could be better.

I was beginning to get used to the extraordinarily slow service in Panama, but this place managed to combine that with the lowest quality food I've eaten for many years - and at a stupidly expensive price. Hard to know what to say in favour... of the place, other than the location, which is passably pleasant. Ok, and the staff, despite being useless, are friendly enough. We arrived at 6.15 and the food we ordered then arrived at 7.15. Foolishly, we ordered a main course, which arrived at 8.15. The seafood platter was cold and most of the shell fish were not open and hence inedible. the tenderloin steak was not tender - we can only assume they cooked the seafood and left it to go cold whilst they cooked the steak. For about half an hour. If we had not been so hungry, we would have sent it all back. And, at $110 for 4, it was truly appalling value I cannot counsel against going here more strongly More

The location of the restaurant at the Panama Canal entrance/exit on the Pacific side is an ideal place to dine, especially at sunset. the sampler platter of fried seafood is exquisite and filling. A great family location with excellent service and local character.

The Balboa Yacht Club has been my regular Friday night after work drinks venue for almost two years now but frequent visits at other times as well. Good selection of local and imported beer (the local Balboa by the bucket is hard to beat) and... they make a fine G&T but the wine selection is limited. The bar menu is reasonably priced and varied with regular specials, try the mixed seafood platter, plenty for six or even eight as a snack, and the octopus ceviche is also very good. Service can be a bit patchy at busy times but the view of ships entering and leaving the canal from the outside deck as the sun sets more than compensates. Live music some nights can be intrusive but you can always sit at the far end of the bar if you want quiet conversation. In my view the best bar in Panama City! More

We were in Panama for 6 nights and ate here every night. We tried something different every night. The food and cold buckets of beer was great. The staff were most accommodating , we never felt that we had to hurry. We met a wonderful... waitress named Abdelys. A friend for life. They had live music and also played great music. It was always full of laughter and fun! There was a dock that you could take a walk on and see the boats anchored also watch all the ships sail by! We stayed at the Country Suites so it was perfect. Highly recommend. Great service and delicious food. View of the ships was amazing! Steps from the Radisson. English speaking staff.

This Club is totally overrated. All they have for themselves is a deck with an ocean view. Their menu is very limited. The filet mignon was tasteless, shrimps were overcooked, salmon was tough and dry. And yes you have to be a member to eat this low average food. The 3 star is for the good service.
