The benefits of the Moorings Ownership Programme

  • In partnership with Yachting Monthly
  • December 17, 2021

The benefits of the Moorings Ownership Programme are numerous, from cutting down the cost of ownership to delivering you a monthly income..it can also eliminate all running costs too!

The Moorings Ownership Programme allows you all the pleasure of owning a boat without the hassle

The Moorings Ownership Programme allows you all the pleasure of owning a boat without the hassle

If somebody leaned across the yacht club bar and explained that they were getting paid to sail their boat for more than six weeks per year, you’d probably suspect a rum too many.

And yet a charter ownership programme from The Moorings boils down to just that. In point of fact, it pays you to sail any Moorings boat in any of our bases worldwide – from Tahiti or the Whitsundays to Croatia and the Caribbean.

“With more experience than any other charter outfit, The Moorings has had the time to hone its ownership programme to offer some of the most compelling packages available,” says Franck Bauguil VP Yacht Ownership & Product Development at The Moorings. “Our founders more or less launched the global charter industry, and today our team still understands exactly what makes sailors tick.”

Emerging from a tale of sailing passion and good old-fashioned hard work, The Moorings’ story goes back more than 50 years. Four friends who met afloat had the germ of an idea. They pooled their $120,000 savings and invested in six boats – 35-footers built by Pearson in the US.

The Moorings has an award-winning range of boats ranging from 42ft to 50ft

With rumours that the British Virgin Islands was soon to get an international air service, the four partners set up shop in Tortola. That was in 1969. Two years later, and the business was already getting new yachts custom designed for charter. The Morgan Out Island 41 was the result, and The Moorings took the boat to the New York Boat Show, selling all 10 hulls to charter owners.

A further 20 boats followed soon afterwards, and the business was launched onto a trajectory of innovative design and solid growth which it still follows today. Of course, the programme now includes more than 850 boats, spread across 18 charter bases around the world.

“We really enable our owners to get the most from their sailing,” says Franck Bauguil. “Just imagine spending two or three weeks on your boat in the Caribbean, then booking a summer trip on a sister ship in the Whitsundays, and a cheeky autumn week in the Mediterranean. It’s so flexible.”

There are other clear benefits, too. An advantageous financing model brings down the cost of ownership, spreading it across several years or delivering a monthly income – as you choose. It also eliminates all running costs: berthing, maintenance and insurance are covered by The Moorings.

At the same time, you are entitled to up to 12 weeks of luxurious cruising per year. Every day you spend aboard costs one point in low season, or two points in high season. Half your 84 points can be used to reserve in advance, with the other half used on short notice.

All of the cabins in The Moorings fleet are of the highest standard

The contract typically runs for five or six seasons, at which point you can choose your next step. Some owners like to trade in the boat for a new model and start the programme all over again. Others prefer to take full ownership themselves and set off cruising.

Our award-winning range runs from 42ft to 50ft – the sweet spot for charter and family holidays alike. Beneteau builds our monohulls, while the renowned South African outfit Robertson & Caine builds our catamarans.

“All are impressively specced and finished to a standard that puts us at the apex for mid-sized luxury cruisers,” says Franck Bauguil. “They are all safe, proven hulls that find the perfect balance between performance and comfort. And because they have been designed especially for charter, they are also robust and easy to maintain.”

Moorings Gouvia - badly organised and inward-looking.

Boat had faults not reported to us – no read out on fuel gauge ( which we found out before we left), no read out on log, and the wind readout failed. Dicky float switch on auto bilge pump was reported – told to “turn it off” – and we were told how to remove an airlock from the fresh water system (we needed to, which implies they knew there was a fault). The boat is a poor design: in practice the Bimini can’t be lowered, so helmsman can’t see the mainsail when it’s being raised; anchor locker had to be kept open when anchoring; and while airy and spacious inside there’s insufficient stowage for personal gear even for a one week holiday. Little thought for the customer : the fridge was turned off between charters as a matter of policy, so you start with a warm fridge; no cleaning materials left from the previous charter as “a child could poison itself”. We were provided with Heikells Ionian Pilot and a chart – but no additional local information and questions were rebuffed with ‘it depends how good a sailor you are’. The echo sounder datum was set 1 metre below the keel – and it seems that was true for other boats too. So we missed out on places we could have safely gone. The base staff were pleasant but no one could answer any questions off their script – that was always someone else’s job. Emails to the base went unanswered – apparently because the manager had been sacked ( can no one else read emails?). Head office was texting me for my sailing qualifications 6 days into the charter – they’d been shown them and taken copies at the start. We had a good holiday, but that’s because of Corfu not because of The Moorings

Extremely poor customer service

We booked a bareboat charter in BVI a little more than three years ago. There were various, serious issues regarding the boat which I reported to Moorings as they occurred. Nobody took it serious. Upon our return and after several reminders, Moorings finally reverted and offered us a discount on our next charter. As I had already spent too much time on the matter, I did not challenge the compensation offered. When we this year wished to make use of the discount, it turned out that it had expired. I wrote Moorings and asked whether the discount still could be applied. They replied that they normally don’t extend the duration but that they would speak with customer service (whom I was corresponding with in the first place). This is now three months ago and I have still not received a reply.

The Moorings Ownership Program

  • Thread starter Chris
  • Start date Aug 29, 2006
  • Forums for All Owners
  • Ask All Sailors

I'm looking at investing in The Moorings Ownership Program and am seeking any positive/negative experiences with this program. Looking at the numbers, quality of boat offered and the opportunity to sail in other locations, to me it's a no-brainer. I know of individuals who are invested (more than one boat) in the program and they have nothing but positives to say. I'm just looking for a broader spectrum of experiences to assist me with my decision.

Depends on your goals The answer to your question is tied to your objective. If your objective is to enjoy sailing in a number of locations with some fequency, it is not a bad deal. If you are looking for a way to have someone pay for your boat, think carefully about the condition you will find "your" boat at the end of the timeshare period. If you are looking to make money (positive cash flow), ask the question that has appeared on this site many times. If these boats consistently generate positive cash flow, why don't the charter companies own boats? I am a Moorings fan, but think there are a lot of better ways to make money or end up with a boat that you would want after the charter life cycle. If you have the time and resources to travel around the world on sister boats, go for it!

Depends upon your time and money You referred to being able to sail in other locations. That is a great dream - it sounds fantastic. You are considering spending a lot of money, so look at this away from the pretty brochures. Honestly evaluate how often, during the time frame of the Moorings ownership program, that you would be able to spend time and dollars on travel to exotic locations and then spend 7-14 days at a time on a charter boat. Then consider, at the end of the ownership program, what are you going to do with a boat that has been actively used by other people in the charter fleet. Bring it home? Keep the boat and move it to a second-tier charter operation? Trade-in on a new charter boat?

I looked too ...and came to the conclusion that it might be a good deal if you want to spend all your vacations sailing. I like sailing as much as the next guy ( I own a boat) but I have to go skiing every now and then too.

Owner Use: What You Need to Know

OWNER-POINTS-0618-HERO

The biggest benefit to owning a yacht through a Yacht Ownership Program is your ability as an owner to sail your yacht, and sister ships, at destinations worldwide.

But for someone who is new to the program, or just learning about the program, understanding exactly how your use as an owner works can seem complex. I am here to tell you that it is actually simple to grasp and I am going to explain exactly how it works.

If you have not received the Owner Privilege Table from us, please click the button below to fill out a form and a link to the table will be e-mailed to your inbox immediately.

Owner Privilege Table

How does owner use work?

As an Owner, you would have full reciprocal use at all of the locations listed on the left side of the table. The dates of the year are broken out across the top of the table, and the shaded boxes below represent High Season (dark blue), Low Season (light blue), or Base Closed/Excluded (gray) for each location.  For example, High Season in the BVI is December 16 – April 15, and Low Season in the BVI is April 16 – December 15.  As an owner, you would receive 84 points total each calendar year (42 points of Advance Booking and 42 points of Short Notice Booking).  Owners can book their time in High Season for 2 points per day and Low Season for 1 point per day.  The maximum Advance Booking in High Season is two weeks (28 points).  Owners can use the remaining 14 Advance Booking points in Low Season for an additional total of two weeks.  As an owner, you would then still have 42 points for Short Notice bookings, which can be used during High or Low Season.  Depending on availability, the owner could use Short Notice points in High Season for three weeks (42 points).  Or the owner could use all 42 Short Notice points and 42 Advance booking points in Low Season for twelve weeks (84 points).

How does it work if I close on a boat in the middle of the year?

Owners receive 3.5 Advance points and 3.5 Short Notice points per month, so if you were to close in June you would receive the points for July-December of that year (6 months x 3.5 = 21 Advance points and 21 Short Notice points).  You would then receive the full 42 Advance and 42 Short Notice points on January 1.

How do I schedule owner use?

Owners have a dedicated owner booking agent to reserve their time aboard their yacht and sister ships.  The owner booking agent keeps track of the points used, and can offer suggestions regarding transport to and from airport, and other bits of local knowledge.

Can I sell my owner points?

Owners are able to sell, donate or give away two weeks of Guest Use in Low Season.  It is up to owners to coordinate with the Owner Booking representative to allow their named guests to book their time.  The Moorings cannot sell your Guest Use for you.

If I don’t use all my points, can I be paid back? / Can I use less time and receive more income?

Points cannot be rolled over from year to year, so if you do not use your points within a calendar year, they will no longer be available to you once the new year begins.  The Moorings cannot buy back points.

Can I buy more points?

If an owner has used all 42 Advance points and 42 Short Notice booking points within a year and still have sailing they want to do, they can receive a 15% discount on the charter rate for additional charter time.

Can I use a catamaran if I buy a monohull?

Blog Chart

Owners are allowed to upgrade within their Group or up one Group. On the Group Table of the Schedule A document (above), you will see that if you own a monohull under 40’, you can upgrade to a monohull up to 49’.  If you own a 41’-49’ monohull, you can upgrade to a sail catamaran up to 42’.  If you own a 50’+ monohull or catamaran up to 42’, you can upgrade to up to a 45’ sail catamaran.  If you own a 43’-45’ sail catamaran, you can upgrade to a sail catamaran up to 51’.  If you own a sail cat, you can upgrade to a like sized power catamaran for 14 days using Short Notice in Low Season annually.  If you own a power catamaran, you can use the sail catamarans and sail monohulls in your Group.

You can upgrade with Advance Booking by paying the difference in charter rates.  You can upgrade with Short Notice points by paying a $500 upgrade fee.

What if my yacht is booked all the time and I can’t use it?

We strive for each yacht in our fleet to be chartered about 20-25 weeks a year, so your yacht will not be booked all the time.  If you have a special date (anniversary, birthday, etc.) that you will want to be on your yacht for, you can reserve it as far in advance as you like for the length of the program.  If you want to be on your yacht every Christmas and New Year’s, or another time during High Season, we would recommend doing that at least 6 months in advance.

It is an affordable way to have a beautiful boat. The key word is affordable.  Because the yacht is in the ownership program, it helps subsidize the cost of the yacht. And it is nice to be able to go to a beautiful place and enjoy your boat.

If you plan to charter multiple times a year and you enjoy it, you need to buy. I love the flexibility of use and that fact that we own a boat in the British Virgin Islands. As a Moorings Owner we don’t have to worry about insurance, dockage, repairs or maintenance. We use it, we enjoy it, and we love it. You get to explore more, and you meet a whole boating community. It also provides an opportunity to plug in with the locals, and you get to know people in a different light.

All I can say is that we have been very impressed.  The staff handling bookings and sales have been excellent.  The marina staff and management throughout the world have been great.  Basically everything I have been promised has been delivered. That is the reason we bought another boat. At the end of the day, we trust a company that has been around for so long.

The Moorings is a tried-and-true charter company. They've been in business for >50 years and they are very consistent. They run their business a bit differently than their largest competitor (DYC), in that it's less of a franchise feel. That means your experiences, level of service, and boat condition is a bit more predictable. They have far fewer options for boat manufacturers, locations, etc. in their focus to keep things a bit more conservative and consistent.

The Moorings catamarans (power and sail) are built by Robertson and Caine, sold a Leopard if purchased directly. They are amazing boats for a charter fleet. Very comfortable, reliable, and easy to sail. These are "high performance" sailing vessels, but we are talking about bareboat charter vacations. Most people are looking for comfort. You'll find catamarans from 37 to 58 feet available for rent.

Their monohulls are built buy Beneteau, one of the leading monohull builders. They have boats from 34 to 54 feet. They do have a few Jeanneau yachts but it seems those are phasing out.

The Moorings parent company also owns Sunsail and Footloose. All three share an office in Clearwater, FL.

The Moorings is world renowned for their amazing service and consistency. If they have a base in a destination you're looking to charter, you would be remiss to pass up The Moorings as an option.

The Moorings Advantage Program

Owning a Yacht as a Business -- ONLY AVAILABLE TO U.S. CITIZENS

The Moorings Advantage Program is designed for active participation by the Owner to run their yacht as a business.

Running the yacht as a business can provide the Owner of the yacht some significant tax benefits. The program is structured like a business, with a revenue stream based on the actual charter income generated by the Yacht and actual expenses in order to properly run this charter business.

The Advantage Program starts with a comprehensive business plan. This includes establishing the Yacht in an LLC and from the day the Yacht enters service, the Owner needs to monitor the activity, track and document all income and expenses, communicate with the Moorings and periodically visit the Yacht and the base.  Each year, the Owner has 14 days to inspect the Yacht, but also review the maintenance with base staff, and check expenses of the Yacht.

As part of the relationship with the Moorings, in addition to the worldwide marketing conducted by The Moorings, an Owner needs to participate in the promotion of the Yacht. For example, by generating content for the Moorings Yacht Ownership blog to help promote charter demand and maximize revenue. Partnering with the Moorings, the Owner may refer charters and earn commissions as well as referral fees for introducing new owners to the Moorings.

As an active Owner, it is important to stay abreast of the charter industry by way of attending yachting exhibitions and allowing The Moorings to keep you informed of new innovations and developments that may impact your business.

By making certain you perform the aforementioned, and meticulously document all the time spent to include a minimum of 100 hours per year, you should qualify under standard IRS rules for active participation into your Yacht business.

These tax benefits include potential losses from operations (charter revenues less operating expenses, less depreciation and interest payments on the loan).  Other tax benefits are the deduction of personal expenses for inspection trips, boat show participation and any other expenses incurred while running the Yacht as a business. Under IRS “Safe Harbor Rules”, these would be considered legitimate tax deductions.

While it is important for the Owner to make, and to show, every effort for the Yacht Charter business to reach profitability, it is "intent" that is crucial.  The important point on which to focus is that you are actively involved to this end and the cumulative time you are involved in your Yacht business must exceed any one other person that is involved in booking or maintaining your yacht.

It should be pointed out that although as an Active Owner you do have the right to use the Yacht, any excessive use will impact the income potential.   Owner's personal use not exceeding 10% of the total time that the Yacht is chartered annually is generally acceptable under IRS guidelines.  it is also worth considering renting your own Yacht. This would give you additional time to enjoy the Yacht while having the revenue flow through your business.

For additional important considerations, check out my video:

This type of program can be complex and the risk of a tax audit is possible. But I suggest a structure that takes a normal, annual straight line depreciation over the length of the program as opposed to a first year FULL DEPRECIATION. This minimizes scrutiny and keeps the focus on the well-documented activity you perform; making certain you're conforming to the accepted 100 hour safe harbor rule.

To discuss additional information concerning these important tax benefits please contact me.   I have owned and enjoyed multiple Yachts with The Moorings over the years,  in both the Guaranteed Income program as well as in The Moorings’ Advantage Program. There is no cost or fee for our conversation and I can promise it will be helpful and informative.  We even offer substantial discounts should you need accounting or tax preparation services in the future.

Guaranteed Income Programs

Is a guaranteed income program a good deal.

Ownership in a charter management program can provide solutions to the financial and practical disadvantages of traditional private ownership. It really is an easy option provided you go into it with the right expectations and goals.

  • If you are looking to retire in the next 3-5 years and want to go cruising, the Guaranteed Income program may be a good option for you.  This program allows you to partially pay off the boat (around 45%) while you get ready to move on board.

boat buyers seminar sailing

  • Alternately, you may have friends who love sailing as much as you do. You could put together a partnership with several other families. That way this investment becomes an even more desirable endeavor and you can use all 12 owner weeks, rather than only 3-6 weeks as a single owner. At the end of the program, the partnership company sells the boat and you could invest in a new boat in a program or move on and outright sell the boat. So, you will have paid around 45% of the cost of the boat from the guaranteed monthly payment for 60 months, recoup around 65% of the original value when you sell and you will have had 12 weeks / year for 5 years of free sailing time.

What is the Guaranteed Income Program?

The bigger charter companies like Dream Yacht Charter or Moorings offer:

  • 9% guaranteed income over 60 months on the value of the yacht.
  • You also get up to 12 weeks of owner time at any of their bases in the world, although most owners can use on average only about 5 weeks per year. If you have a partnership arrangement, the 12 weeks are very attractive
  • There are no costs to the owner for the duration of the program. So, insurance, dockage and maintenance is paid by the charter company
  • The yacht will be maintained for the duration of the program and then be phased-out at the end of the 60 month period. The owner receives a full schedule of the phase-out program and should receive a boat back at the end of the program that is in good condition, with all systems working, excepting for fair wear and tear.

*Charter company programs and boat prices may differ. This is an example only.

Is A Guaranteed Income Program A Good Deal?

Guaranteed income program

  • Equity in your boat: $51,937
  • Value of 6 owner weeks @ $4500 average: $135,000
  • Value after 5 years based on statistics of SOLD boats over five years: $266,948
  • Mortgage Payoff: $215,011
  • Monthly Mortgage Payment: $3,160
  • Monthly Guaranteed Payment: $3,337
  • 20% Down Payment: $88,983
  • Lagoon 400 Net Price: $444,914
  • You will receive back 45% of the cost of the Yacht in guaranteed income and pay no insurance , no dockage, and no maintenance. All you have to pay is your mortgage, which the guaranteed income payment will cover.
  • The yacht, provided you bought a desirable yacht and layout, will be worth up to 65% of the original price. Catamarans are more desirable than monohulls.
  • The owner weeks have a value and should be calculated in this equation. Your weeks are worth on average $4,500/week. That will be $27,000 / year of free vacation on the above mentioned catamaran model. You can also “upgrade” on your owner weeks. The bigger companies will allow you to pay a small upcharge to charter a bigger yacht anywhere in their fleet with some exceptions.
  • Maintenance becomes a non-issue. A friend once remarked that he spent a week just working on his boat he owns and keeps in a marina close to his house. He had planned one day to go for a quick sail, but instead, had to do unexpected maintenance. He never had the time to go sailing! The following week he flew to the BVI  and used his owner exchange time with the Moorings. He walked aboard the boat and that night he was anchored out, enjoying the islands, with no time needed for maintenance and no unexpected headaches. He says: “It may be hard to put a dollar value on that, but that worry-free convenience has a great value for me.”

Looking at the numbers on the spreadsheet, it shows that after five years you will walk away almost even or slightly ahead. Your sailing for the 60 month period is free because it is owner time which you do not pay for but has an intrinsic value.

End Of Program Options

You may want to keep your yacht for personal use or live-aboard, most charter companies offer alternative options. Smaller companies like TMM or BVI Yacht Charters do not limit your time in the fleet, provided the boat is in good shape. However,  you have to assess the increased cost of maintenance and the lower revenues that the aging yacht will fetch. Bigger companies limit the age of yachts to 5 year or max 6 years as they bill themselves as “first tier” companies and charge accordingly. Some of them do have second-tier fleets where you can extend your management program. Alternately, some companies offer trade-in options if you want to continue in the program and buy a new yacht. They will also help you sell your pre-owned charter yacht for a 10% brokerage commission.
