Relaxing and Informative 2-Hour Riverboat Cruise

We ordered our tickets online and picked them up at their small ticket booth on Blackhawk Street [about 1/2 block west of intersection of Blackhawk and Highway 18]. The riverboat is in the process of moving their dock, so it is a good idea to stop at the booth for accurate directions to the dock The booth is open one hour before scheduled departure. There is indoor and outdoor seating on the riverboat. You can purchase water or various kinds of chips for $1 each. You can also bring your own food and beverages with you. The guide and Captain were both friendly and knowledgeable about the history, commerce, nature and points of interest along the Mississippi River between Prairie du Chien, WI and MacGregor, Iowa. The highlight was seeing so many bald eagles. We even saw one swoop down and catch a duck.

We had a hard time finding the place to purchase our tickets compared to where the boat was docked, but it was definitely worth searching it out. The captain and the guide were very friendly and knowledgeable. The guide gave lots of history of the area, pointed out wildlife along the shoreline, and was entertaining as well. Our two children (ages 11 & 14) loved the trip, although next time we'd get there earlier so we can get seats along the outside of the boat. Sitting in the inside really limited the views. We'd definitely do this trip again!

It was raining and stormy about an hour prior to our departure and the company called us to say there would be a half an hour delay..to make sure it would be safe to cruise. They kept us updated and we did get to depart as anticipated. It did rain most of the trip..but had plenty of indoor seating and we did see many eagles throughout the 2 hour trip. Staff was very helpful and knowledgable. I enjoyed it much more than I had anticipated due to the weather.

We attended the "Fall Foliage Wildlife Cruise" 9-7-15. We were a little early for peak fall colors, but still had gorgeous, colorful scenery. Annie, our boat captain and narrator, was very knowledgable, but more importantly, kept her talk fun and interesting. She has a great eye for spotting wildlife that most of us would have missed. We learned so many fascinating things about the area and its history. We saw lots of wildlife: eagles, muskrats, turtles, beavers, herons, cormorants, many birds, muskrat lodges and beaver lodges. We sat outside and were given cozy blankets to keep us warm. Drinks and snacks were available, but we never went inside to partake. There is a bathroom on board. The only negative was the woman behind us who lit cigarette after cigarette and then left her nasty butts on the floor when she left. We booked the "Fall Birding Migration Cruise" as soon as we got home. Next year, we'll go on the "Bald Eagles On The Nest Cruise" in May or June and the "Lotus & Lily Cruise" in July or August. We're hooked!

We took the 2 hour fall foliage and wildlife cruise. The boat was very clean, the staff very knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife along the river. Can't wait to go again!!

When we arrived in Lansing we boarded the Mississippi Explorer, a boat rated to carry 98 passengers. We would spend the afternoon sailing through Pool 9 and Pool 10 of the Mississippi River. Capt. Annie Weymiller would conduct our tour, assisted by Bruce, a naturalist, who would discuss what to look for and explain what we saw. Annie explained the waterway between the locks is described as a “pool”, therefore there are 29 locks and pools on the Upper Mississippi. She was a member of “Friends of Pool Nine” as Bruce was “Friends of Pool Ten.” These are “community based, grassroots, non-profit organization comprised of individual, family, and business members who share a common mission to conserve the natural and cultural resources within Pool 9 (10) of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.” As we cruised Annie would describe the operations of the boats and barges on the river. She interacted with the barge captains and lock masters to insure proper protocol in river operations. As we passed other vessels she coordinated passage to port or starboard of the other craft. She requested permission to enter a lock and then described lock operations. As we sailed the river I realized there were coal fired power stations and learned the dams on the river were not used for power generation but solely to maintain river levels to keep the channel operational. Each tow may push 15 barges but this requires that a tow must break the grouping into two sections to navigate the lock. A barge typically holds 1,500 tons and would fill 58 semi-trucks. A tow would equal 870 trucks! Bruce was our naturalist and discussed changes in the river through the seasons. We observed eagles, white pelicans, and cormorants in large numbers. We also learned how Zebra mussels are an invasive small, fingernail-sized animals that attach to solid surfaces in water. They virtually destroyed the Mississippi River clams by smothering them with a volume they could not move to open their shells. Another invasive species on the river is the Asian carp, which have been known to dominate entire streams, effectively pushing out the native species. Congress ordered the St. Anthony Falls Lock closed to try to stop the northward spread of invasive Asian carp up the Mississippi.

This Three-Day Mississippi River Cruise Adventure Starting In Wisconsin Is A Unique Family Getaway

Lena Linh

Ready for an off-the-beaten-path adventure on the water?

Let’s steer away from the usual and hop aboard a riverboat journey that’s brimming with charm, history, and good old family fun.

It’s time to uncover a hidden gem of the Midwest—a three-day Mississippi River cruise that’s nothing short of a unique family getaway !

Embarking on this leisurely voyage, you’ll find yourself aboard the Celebration Belle, a vessel that’s a throwback to another era with its classic paddlewheel design, yet with the comfort of modern amenities.

celebration belle 1

Crafted in 1986, this riverboat was born from the skilled hands of Patti Shipbuilding in Pensacola, and it’s ready to transport you through time and water.

Departing from the historic river town of Dubuque, the Celebration Belle sets a course for Prairie du Chien, about 60 miles upriver.

With every meal included, you won’t have to fret about where to grab a bite—you can sit back, relax, and savor the flavors while the Mississippi’s landscapes unfurl around you.

celebration belle 2

As the Celebration Belle chugs along the mighty Mississippi, you’re in for more than just a scenic jaunt—you’re on a floating feast!

It’s like your favorite family dinner, only with ever-changing waterfront views.

No squabbles over who picks the restaurant—here, the only debate is window seat or aisle.

And trust me, with the sights you’ll see, you’ll want to snag that window seat faster than a seagull on a French fry.

It’s a relaxing, belly-filling journey that will have the whole family beaming brighter than a lighthouse on a dark night.

celebration belle 3

All aboard for good eats and grand times!

Entertainment on board?

Absolutely!

From toe-tapping tunes to captivating storytelling, there’s something to keep everyone in high spirits as the paddlewheel churns through the mighty Mississippi.

celebration belle 4

And let’s not forget the magic of the mighty Mississippi itself.

It’s like a floating block party where the guest of honor is the river.

There’s a banjo plucker that could give any string a run for its money and stories so rich, you’d think Mark Twain himself was whispering in your ear.

Between the belly laughs and the soft sway of the boat, you’ll find yourself bonding with your family and making friends with folks you’ve just met.

It’s like summer camp for all ages, except the campfire is a grand old river, and the s’mores are, well, still s’mores because who can pass up on those?

celebration belle 5

Arriving in Prairie du Chien, there’s no need to stress about logistics.

The boat company has it all figured out—they’ll whisk you off to a cozy hotel with a shuttle arranged for your convenience.

Once you’re nestled in that hotel, you’re not just a guest—you’re family.

And in Prairie du Chien, the pillows are fluffier than a marshmallow convention.

There’s no fuss here—it’s all about kicking back, maybe with a local treat in hand.

Tomorrow’s adventures can wait.

Tonight, we feast on hospitality!

Your second day is an immersion into Prairie du Chien’s rich tapestry of history.

The Fort Crawford Museum is a treasure trove, revealing tales of the fort that loyally stood watch over the city from 1816 to 1856.

As you wander through Fort Crawford Museum, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine—minus the futuristic gadgets and the risk of altering history with an ill-timed sneeze.

celebration belle 6

Here, the past doesn’t just whisper—it tells stories louder than my Aunt Ida at a family reunion.

Each exhibit is like a chapter of a page-turner, except here, the characters are real, and the battles don’t need any CGI enhancements.

It’s a place where kids can play soldier without turning the living room into a no-go zone, and parents can marvel without spending a fortune.

celebration belle 7

Cruising back downriver is where the magic happens.

This eight-hour journey offers a tranquil escape through breathtaking stretches of river country.

It’s a chance to let time slow down and soak in the natural beauty that surrounds you.

As you meander back down the river, think of it as nature’s lazy river ride—without the plastic tubes and the splash fights, unless you’re into that, which, by the way, is totally fine!

This is the kind of place where eagles soar overhead like they’re part of a top-notch airshow, just for you, and the trees along the banks wave as if they’re old friends cheering you on in the slowest race ever.

celebration belle 8

And the best part?

There’s no Wi-Fi, which means you’ll actually have to talk to your family—and you’ll want to because this scenic route is the ultimate conversation starter.

Travelers come from near and far, some journeying over 1,000 miles for this experience.

The Celebration Belle’s reputation even caught the attention of Swedish royalty—yes, the king and queen themselves have graced its decks!

This Wisconsin excursion, along with other Mississippi River adventures offered by the Celebration Belle, is more than just a trip—it’s a lasting memory for the whole family.

Mississippi River Cruises

Mississippi river cruises in wisconsin.

Julie Green

| September 23, 2022

Taking a Wisconsin river boat cruise is just what you might need. There’s something about a river cruise that can relax and invigorate you at the same time. There’s so much to see and experience, including a sense of stepping back in time, while floating down a mighty river. In the United States it doesn’t get much mightier than the Mississippi, and embarking on your journey from Wisconsin will give you a new perspective on this iconic waterway.

Begin your Mississippi River journey from ports in La Crosse or Prairie du Chien for spectacular views and a history lesson or two.

What to expect

These guided and interactive Wisconsin Mississippi River cruises take you into the region’s Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, where you will see various inhabitants of Wisconsin’s watery ecosystem. The 261-mile refuge was established in 1924 and includes 240,000 acres of islands, marshes and waterways. Living here are bald eagles, great blue herons, neo-tropical songbirds, mink, hundreds of fish and plant species and much more. During Wildlife Cruises, you will discover all the wetlands have to offer. Specialty cruises that focus on specific wildlife or seasonal migrations are also available, as well as guest speaker series. Group tours and private charter cruises are also available.

Prairie du Chien

This port is the oldest settlement on Wisconsin’s Upper Mississippi River, and was traversed by the explorers Marquette and Joliet during their 1673 expedition of this region. Sights on this cruise include Effigy Mounds National Monument, consisting of more than 200 Native American symbolic mounds, and Pike’s Peak Bluff and State Park. You’ll also explore scenic backwater channels teeming with wildlife, including beaver lodges, bald eagle nests, turtle homes, otter runs, bird habitats and more. Wildlife naturalists and knowledgeable captains will describe the sights to you.

This once-busy steamboat port used to boast fur trading, sawmills and boat building, and embarking on a river cruise from this port offers a unique journey into a scenic, backwater wildlife refuge. Venture into little-seen wetlands and side channels and view bald eagles nests, beaver lodges and lotus fields. For a memorable excursion, take a Sunset Wildlife Cruise and enjoy the peace of the river in the quiet evening hours. Cruises are narrated by wildlife naturalists and licensed captains who offer their expertise and guidance during these calming cruises.

River boats

You will cruise the Mississippi River aboard Mississippi Explorer Vessels, which are uniquely designed to access the river’s side channels and backwater sloughs. These seven boats are inspected and certified by the U.S. Coast Guard and follow strict safety standards. The vessels come in various sizes and are enclosed to protect from the elements, except for one that is open-air. All boats have open sun decks for you to enjoy the fresh air. Amenities are varied and differ from boat to boat, and include carpeting and padded seating, music systems, restrooms, viewing windows, service bars, heating and air-conditioning. You will be cruising in comfort!

Tickets for the Mississippi River cruises can be purchased online. This is the fastest method and best way to guarantee seats. You can also purchase tickets at the Prairie due Chien and La Crosse ports 30 minutes prior to departure time. Cruises are two hours long and tickets are $19.99 for adults and $14.99 for children ages 4 to 11. Children ages 3 and under are free.

Other considerations

Cruises will depart even on rainy days, which can make for a peaceful expedition due to the lack of river traffic. Cruises will be canceled in the event of dangerous weather conditions, however. Also, there’s no need to worry about pesky mosquitoes, which like to stay in the tall grasses and plants at the river’s edge. Since you won’t be disembarking, they won’t be an issue.

You are allowed to bring food and beverages on board, including alcoholic drinks. Please drink in moderation; captains have the right to refuse service to visibly intoxicated patrons. You are encourages to bring binoculars, cameras, sunscreen and sunglasses. You’ll want to be sure to capture memories of your cruise!

No smoking or pets are allowed.

Wherever you decide to embark from and no matter the season, a Mississippi River cruise will be a memorable and treasured experience. Enjoy exploring Wisconsin’s section of America’s mighty river!

S ummer is all about the warm sun, beaches, and cruising the rivers of the Mississippi! But if you’re like me and you don’t own a boat, but want to do something different, Celebration River cruises on the Celebration Belle is the way to go!

I live in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and made the small trek to Prairie du Chien to meet up with Celebration River Cruises paddle boat. This Celebration Belle boat can host 750 guests for a dinner cruise. Part of this adventure is the beautiful Great River Road drive. I suggest leaving earlier in the day because if you live in the Midwest; you know we really have two seasons, winter and construction. Leave early because of construction and time spent stopping for trains. There is just so much to see and do along the way. While driving, you’ll notice several lookout points where you can stop. Capture the sights, sounds, and scents of the Mississippi River and read the historical markers. Charming small towns offer ideal scenery for picturesque moments with cool stores, sculptures, architecture, and beautiful rolling hills.

riverboat cruises prairie du chien

Driving along the train tracks, train enthusiasts will observe various train cars transporting different goods. As you get closer to your destination in Prairie du Chien , it’s probable that you’ll need to stop for a passing train. Make your way through the historic town that features red brick and limestone buildings. It keeps the old town feeling alive by being unique.

riverboat cruises prairie du chien

I would like to pause for a moment to say that those who are bringing disabled friends and family, or you struggle with mobility, there is an elevator for you to use so you can enjoy all the decks. Just ask or inform them when you book or even ask your server the day of. They are pleased to accommodate you.

riverboat cruises prairie du chien

The staff were accommodating and doting from the moment I arrived. The server introduced herself and stated she was available for anything I needed. Behind the bar, the staff is replenishing all the necessities. All of them smiled that day without exception. The onboard entertainment for the evening is Aaron Lotzow , playing “Hits from the Decades” as indicated by his sign and fulfilling any requests you may have.

riverboat cruises prairie du chien

Just outside the store’s door is the lower observation deck, with a few tables and chairs to sit on. By this time in the fall, the sun is just setting, and you get to see the beautiful colors as it falls below the horizon. In the middle of that deck is a staircase that takes you to the pilothouse where the captain of the ship is and another beautiful observation deck with 2 black smokes stacks that look like there are two golden crowns placed on the top. Our captain of this cruise was Jeremy, who graciously answered my questions about what all the computer monitors did. He detailed 4 systems working in succession: ALS, navigation maps, radar map (for shoreline) and security cameras. The 3 systems can even allow them to navigate through the fog, be aware of who is also on the water near them, the depth of the riverbed, and so much more. The one system looked like the ones I saw when I used to fish with my grandpa Bud Hunter… the green grainy one that would locate fish for you … but I digress. There were a couple of kids, who were explorers much like myself onboard and they soon made their way up to the captain and immediately had many questions. At night, the 4th deck, observation deck, creates a beautifully lit romantic backdrop of lighting along with the night sky. As we continue on, the atmosphere of awe and affection is created as people attempt to photograph the moon, river’s edge, and cities we pass.

riverboat cruises prairie du chien

I headed back downstairs for dinner where I first met my tables mates, Carrie and Dave. They were their celebrating their 27th wedding anniversary. Dave’s dad jokes, stories of their travels, and other adventures made it easy to enjoy the company of their smiling faces. They said this was one of the best anniversaries yet.

Dinner was buffet style set up on the dance floor. They excuse each table separately to make it orderly, and you’re allowed to go for seconds of everything but the main course, which is Prime Rib. Our entire dinner was so mouth-watering good! The prime rib was cooked to medium rare perfection and was delicious. If you don’t like prime rib, they also offer chicken. There was salad, baby red potatoes, seasoned in what I could only guess as a spicy Lawry’s salt, carrots, corn salsa, Alfredo with noodles and buns. All the food was so great and filling I didn’t need seconds. I had a strawberry daiquiri and a pina colada- both were blended perfectly and strong, without being too expensive. It is a cash bar. Certain drinks like water, soda and coffee are included.

riverboat cruises prairie du chien

The staff cleared out once everyone was done eating, and the dance floor became available. Aaron, the entertainer, has been playing music and engaging with the audience the whole time. This man does it all – he beatboxes for the bass, creates the background undertones, and plays the piano and tambourine. I was so engrossed in conversation and the amazing food that it took me a while to realize this person can sing both high and low notes. From Piano Man to Britney Spears , we even took a dance break for the cha-cha slide, where I got funky on the dance floor. I befriended two ladies who were uncertain about their dancing abilities, and I assured them that the song would guide them. Aaron kept the party going, and I eventually convinced Dave and Carrie to dance to a slow song. As I watched couples of different ages celebrating each other and taking one another across the dance floor, I had completely forgotten that I was on a boat. This setting takes you into the moment of living life to its fullest, even when indoors loses its allure. You can step outside onto the decks to enjoy the untouched beauty of our driftless region and the night sky that has remained for centuries.

If you still can’t picture it, the boat has an incredible amount of space to enjoy on all of its decks. This place is perfect for weddings, birthdays, retirements, proposals, or just a fun night out with your loved ones. The Captain’s announcement about pulling into port made me realize the 3-hour tour had ended too quickly, leaving me feeling sad. Prairie du Chien marked the end of their season’s final run, so I began considering joining them for a day-long tour from quad cities to Dubuque, IA in the coming summer. The owners of the place are family members and they run it. I was served prime rib by Scott Schadler, the son of the founder of Celebration River Cruises. Peruse their website for all those details and trust me, you don’t want to wait!

Absolutely perfect in all ways!

My Friend and I went on the Riverboat Twilight and it was the most perfect/awesome adventure! From reserving our trip to our final walk to our car after the two day cruise, all was perfect! Staff are amazing, from the Captain to the servers, to the musical entertainers. The food is suburb and generous! Everything is very well organized, from our luggage/hotel in Dubuque/seating for meals, free shuttles in Dubuque, etc! The scenery and info along the way from the captain was wonderful! This was an absolutely perfect two day cruise, and we are going again in Mid October as we loved it so much!!.

The service by all involved was first class all the way!

We were very impressed by the personal service we received by the staff and everyone involved. The trip was very nice from a sightseeing perspective, interesting from a historical perspective and very relaxing overall. Plus the food was plentiful and excellent. We highly recommend this cruise to everyone!

Wonderful relaxing two days....

Extremely enjoyable trip. The cruise itself was delightful as you slowly moved up and down the river enjoying the wildlife and listening to the Captain explain the view and history. Unless you are a very big eater you have to be selective as they feed you FIVE times a day. Not only is the food plentiful but it is also very good. The Grand Resort in Dubuque was a nice stay as we had a view of the river. There was adequate time to explore some of the sights In Dubuque. I think we will do this trip again in the future…….

3 F's; Food, Food, and Fun

Excellent team from the captain to the crew provide a relaxing time..The chefs do an excellent job and there is more great food than you can imagine. This is the most organized and professional staff that we have ever experienced. No detail is overlooked.

To truly experience the Wisconsin Great River Road, you need to get out on the river. A number of boat launches, boat tours and other on-the-water experiences are available in many of the river towns.

The La Crosse Queen is a modern-day replica of the grand river boats that plied the Mississippi River in the early 1900s. Cruising out of La Crosse, Wisconsin, she is one of the few authentic Mississippi River paddlewheel river boats still in operation in the United States today. In keeping with early traditions, she was built with sternwheels that are her only means of propulsion.

More than 25,000 acres of open water awaits you on Lake Pepin. This natural lake was formed by a natural sandbar created where the Chippewa River spills into the Mississippi. The result is one of the best places on earth for sailing and boating. Waterskiing was invented on this big body of water. Numerous marinas and boat launches can be found along its shores.

Lake Onalaska

At 7,700 acres, Lake Onalaska offers boaters lots of room to explore. The lake is famous not only as a boating and paddling destination – it’s also known as the “Sunfish Capital of the World.” Backwater areas and quiet sloughs are perfect for canoeing and kayaking.

Lake Winneshiek

This wild and undeveloped stretch near Lynxville and Ferryville offers thousands of acres of open water just waiting to be explored with a canoe or kayak. At the northern and southern ends of the pool, the river splits into numerous channels. Boat launches are located along the eastern shore, allowing easy access to this pristine section of the Mississippi River. Numerous stumps and islands make this a challenging stretch for motorboats

National Archives Loans Prairie du Chien Treaty for NMAI Exhibit

By Victoria Macchi | National Archives News

A man in a wide-brimmed hat is seen in profile, pointing to a document on a table.

Joseph “Zeke” Rupnick, Chairman of the Prairie Band, Potawatomi Nation, inspects the 1829 Prairie du Chien Treaty on November 9, 2022. On loan from the National Archives and Records Administration, this treaty will be on display at the National Museum of the American Indian until April 2023. WASHINGTON, December 16, 2022 — The 1829 Prairie du Chien Treaty, in which several Native communities ceded land in the Great Lakes region to the U.S. government, will be on display at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) for several months thanks to an ongoing collaboration with the National Archives and Records Administration.

The document negotiated between the Chippewa (Ojibwe), Ottawa, and Potawatomi Nations and the federal government is part of the National Archives.

It is the 16th treaty to be temporarily exhibited at the museum through a loan from the National Archives as part of the Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations exhibit since 2014.

The public can view the Prairie du Chien Treaty at NMAI in Washington, DC, until April 2023. View the treaty in its entirety in the National Archives Catalog .

“The Indian Treaties at the National Archives are some of our most historically significant records, and they remain relevant today as tribal leaders and lawyers continue to use them to assert their rights in court, such as in cases over land and water rights,” Meghan Ryan Guthorn, Deputy Chief Operating Officer of the National Archives, said at an event on November 9 marking the installation of the treaty.

The treaties in this series are on display to the public for a limited time to best conserve them.

Due to their historical and intrinsic value, the treaties are classified as Specially Protected Holdings and are stored in a vault at the National Archives Building in Washington, DC. Specially Protected Holdings have restricted physical access, and they are unavailable to be pulled for use in the Central Research Room.

The National Archives works with NMAI as well as tribal leaders and communities “to make not only the treaties but other records important to Native American communities more accessible for research and education, and to tell more inclusive stories about the histories of our nations,” Guthorn added.

Thirty-five tribal representatives signed the Prairie du Chien Treaty on July 29, 1829, including five women, in Michigan Territory.

The Prairie du Chien Treaty was one of 12 major treaties in which Potawatomi people relinquished most of their land in the southern Great Lakes to the United States. During the treaty negotiations at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, in 1829, U.S. officials pressured Native leaders to cede territories in northern Illinois and southwestern Wisconsin, parts of which were already occupied by American intruders. Ultimately, 35 tribal representatives signed the treaty, including five women who are thought to be widows or heirs of deceased chiefs. Under the agreement, Potawatomi and associated Ottawa and Ojibwe groups relinquished 3.5 million acres of tribal land. In return, the U.S. government exchanged trade goods, barrels of salt, annual payments in silver, a blacksmith shop in Chicago and land parcels for tribal leaders and their Indigenous-French (Métis) descendants, and $11,601 was set aside to settle Native American debts to traders. The treaty furthered the U.S. government’s gradual removal of the Potawatomi people to lands west of the Mississippi River.
