4 story riverboat casino

The first floor is non-smoking...but just slots and tournament tables, there are 4 stories in all. Mostly slot machines...no free drinks while gambling, although there is a soda fountain on the third floor located near the bar that is complimentary. Small bottles of water are also complimentary from the waitresses. Mostly only one table for each game except for craps, and there were quite a few of them. Went there on a weekend and was dissapointed because the lowest table minimum was $10...was hoping for a $5 minimum table. Was playing on a hot craps table and they upped the minimum to $15...they said it was because it was Saturday night but that was baloney because ALL the remaining tables for ALL games that were $10 minimum earlier were still $10 minimum when I left 4 hours later! Was there for 2 nights and lost, of course...but that's gambling. Much rather play in Vegas, but when in Rome.......Most of theDealers and pit bosses were very nice, helpful and a lot of fun.

The casino was fun and had lots of slot machines and poker tables. The down side was the smoke smell as soon as you walked in the door. As a non smoker it hit me like a ton of bricks. The top floor where the resaurants are was the worst. The smell is even in the nonsmoking areas. We only stay a short while because it was so bad.

What I like about Horseshoe is that although they are part of the mega Harrahs/Caesars/Total Rewards casino they still are true to Jack Binion's values of treating gamblers right.

The casino itself is not clean and the employees are not the friendliest. Have had better experiences at French Lick

Old casino, on a barge. Needs to be updated, or replaced. I lost, wife broke even on slots. Poor location miles away from any major highways. Hotel attached to it is good, but a long (indoor) walk from the casino.

This casino is the smokiest and "non winning" casino you will ever visit. The slot machines are very hard to hit and when you do happen to hit a bonus, GOODLUCK..you will be very dissapointed in your payout ! I bet between 1.00 and 2.00 a spin and get 3.00 to 5.00 on my bonus ! This boat needs some competition, it is always crowded and no one seems to be winning. Take your money and your lungs some where else.

Gambling Taxes in Indiana

In the state of Indiana, as with the rest of the United States, all gambling winnings are subject to federal income tax. Whether you’ve won from a lottery, bingo, raffle, horse race, or Indiana casino, the IRS requires you to report all of your gambling winnings as income on your tax return.

When you win at an Indiana casino, you should receive a Form W-2G, Certain Gambling Winnings, from the payer. This form reports the amount of your winnings to you and the IRS. The payer issues the form depending on the amount you win and the type of gambling. For example, you’ll receive a Form W-2G if you receive $600 or more in gambling winnings and the payout is at least 300 times the amount of the wager.

However, not all gambling winnings are subject to IRS Form W-2G. That doesn’t mean you’re exempt from reporting the income, though. Even if you don’t receive a W-2G, you must report all gambling winnings on your return. That includes cash and the fair market value of any item you win.

Moreover, your gambling winnings are generally subject to a flat 24% tax if you win over $5,000. This includes winnings from bingo, keno, slot machines, and poker tournaments. Bear in mind that Indiana also imposes a 3.23% personal income tax rate, and large gambling winnings could be subject to the extra charge. Always check with your accountant or the casino.

You may also deduct gambling losses on your tax return if you itemize your deductions. You can deduct your losses only up to the amount of your total gambling winnings. Generally, you should report your winnings and losses separately, rather than reporting a net amount.

Remember, it’s important to keep an accurate diary or similar record of your gambling winnings and losses. This record should include the date and type of gambling, your name, the address of the gambling establishment, and the amounts you have won or lost.

Online Casino Sites for Indiana Players

Image - Is it legal? Online Casinos Banner

Even though Indiana has a long gambling tradition with more than ten brick-and-mortar casinos, the state still isn’t ready to move casinos into the online era. While the Hoosier State legalized online sportsbooks in October 2019, legalizing online casinos has been fruitless. Nevertheless, we are optimistic the Senate will change its stance towards online casinos and approve their legalization soon.

Until that happens, Indiana players can still conveniently play in online casinos, and here’s how. Some states, such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, and Nevada legalized online casinos. Therefore, if you happen to visit these states, you can register an account on one of their online casino platforms. Remember, you have to be there physically, but you don’t have to be a resident of those states.

There is another way to go about this — offshore casinos. Essentially, we are talking about licensed international casino platforms that accept US players. These gambling sites offer exciting games to their players.

However, if you opt for an offshore casino, you need to do thorough research and pick a reliable and trustworthy platform. You should avoid all casinos that don’t have a valid license to operate. Moreover, offshore gambling comes with some risks. For instance, if you run into some problems regarding payouts, bonuses, or your account, you can’t rely on the local authorities to help you out. They don’t have jurisdiction over offshore casinos, so you’ll be on your own.

History of Riverboat Gambling in the USA

When riverboat gaming first took the USA by storm, paddlewheel riverboats had long been used on the Mississippi River as a means of passenger and freight transportation. With the advent of the railways, riverboats saw their utility decline and started to be viewed as entertainment and leisure vessels by the public.

Boat cruises were popular for their live music and dancing, but also as a way to escape the crowded cities across the US. As these boats became entertainment hubs, gambling gained popularity on board . Initially, gambling was limited to card and table games, but slot machines were eventually added to most riverboats. Nowadays, players in states with legal online gambling can enjoy the best real money online casinos . For example, if they are within the state of New Jersey, they can enjoy the best online casinos in NJ without leaving the comfort of their own homes.

As the Mississippi River served as the border of several states, it created the perfect legal gray area. In 1903, several states simultaneously softened their stance on gambling due to the economic potential that it offered. Thus began the golden era of riverboat gambling . The first casinos were required to be located on ships that would have to sail away from the dock. In some parts, gambling was only allowed once the ship was sailing.

The Lyndon B. Johnson Era

The administration under Lyndon. B Johnson placed significant restrictions on what riverboat casinos could legally do. In 1951, the Transportation of Gambling Devices Act was passed, which made the transportation of gambling devices across state borders illegal. This placed limitations on how riverboats could operate.

Riverboat casinos were first approved by state lawmakers in the late 20th century by those states which prohibited gambling on land. In the 1980s, lawmakers had the vision to revive the golden era of riverboat gambling. Several states simultaneously introduced laws that permitted gambling on water vessels, creating the framework under which they still operate today. Iowa was the first state to fully legalize riverboat gambling . Apart from Iowa, Riverboat gambling is legal in Mississippi, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, and Missouri too.

Riverboat Casino Economies

In 2010, there were 10 operational riverboat casinos. This number might pale in comparison to the number of land casinos in the United States, but riverboat gambling saw a massive boom during the 2010s. In 2018, there were 63 riverboat casinos in operation across the legal states. This spike in growth suggests that riverboat casinos have a distinct appeal, separate from that of land-based casinos.

Riverboats make massive contributions to local economies, as all winnings are taxed by the state. Before you start playing, make sure to acquaint yourself with the gambling commission of the state in which you are planning on playing. In Iowa, if you win over $1,200, you’ll be paying an eye-watering 15% as tax to the state and 5% to the local community, whereas in Iowa, the tax rate stands at a little over 5%.

Proponents of riverboat casinos frequently argue that these floating casinos increase employment rates in the communities where the boats are docked. To support the requirements of large floating casinos, communities are engaged in the development of restaurants, shopping, accommodation, recreation, and other hospitality facilities to capitalize on the spending power of visiting tourists .

Since state legislatures were never willing to give up on the revenues generated by casinos. In a unique ruling in 1998, courts had stated that boats had to be “solely over and in contact with the surface” of rivers, thereby eliminating the need for actual floating vessels. Over time, the rules were amended to allow the construction of casinos on stilts , with the caveat that they had to be located in navigable water.

Fun Facts About Riverboat Casinos

Before we get into the list of top riverboat gambling destinations, we would like to share a few fun historical facts and trivia that you might find interesting. These facts might even make good conversation starters should you get down to maritime gaming.

When riverboat gambling was legalized for the first time in the late 1980s, different states put forward varying cosmetic requirements . In an inconvenience to casino owners, all Louisiana riverboat casinos were required to be constructed exactly like the 19th-century paddlewheel steamboats, for reasons unknown. To run a legal riverboat casino in Indiana, vessels had to have a minimum length of 150 feet and a minimum carrying capacity of 500 passengers.

There have also been violent incidents associated with riverboat gambling. As riverboat casinos operated on the water, it was often thought that they were somehow exempt from the laws of the land. Historians have discovered several instances of individuals punishing cheaters and thieves by taking the law into their own hands. in 1835, five gamblers were lynched in Vicksburg Mississippi when they were caught cheating.

Some of the biggest reforms to riverboat gambling were brought on – unfortunately – by Hurricane Katrina. Before 2005, most riverboat casinos only allowed gambling when the vessel was sailing. However, this was not realistic all year round, as boats could not leave their docks in unpredictable weather . After Katrina, most state laws dictate that riverboat casinos need to be docked for safety.

Riverboat Casinos Today

The Mississippi River region is still the hotbed of all riverboat gambling in the United States. Today, there are over 20 riverboat casinos that gamblers can choose from. Let’s take a look at some of the best riverboat casinos today. In order to make this list, the casinos that we evaluated have had to meet stringent requirements of variety, novelty, hospitality, and service.

Police: musician gunned down in targeted homicide outside indiana casino, musician killed outside casino.

ELIZABETH, Ind. (WISH) — A musician was fatally shot in a targeted homicide outside a southern Indiana casino on Sunday morning, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department reported Monday.

LilDon Williams, 32, of Louisville, Kentucky, died in the shooting at the Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino, the department says.

Investigators on Monday believed the shooters targeted Williams, although the reasons for the homicide were not yet known. Reports say Williams is a a rapper and hip hop artist known as Key Block.

After Williams had finished a show in Louisville with several other artists, he and some family and friends went to the casino, arriving in several vehicles about 12:50 a.m. Sunday. A dark-colored car had followed them into the parking lot, but the people in that car remained inside, not going into the casino, the sheriff’s department says.

After about three hours in the casino, Williams and his family and friends left Caesars and returned to their vehicles. As they left the parking lot, two masked people armed with rifles left the dark-colored car and approaches Williams’ vehicles, the sheriff department says.

“Williams attempted to flee on foot but was cornered and fatally gunned down in the parking lot,” said a news release from the sheriff’s department. “One of the masked individuals drove off in Williams’ vehicle, a silver and black 2013 Dodge Charger with a rear window louver. The other masked individual drove away in the dark colored car.”

The sheriff’s department says it’s the first homicide at the casino, which has opened in 1988. The casino sits on the Ohio River, about a 25-minute drive from downtown Louisville.

Anyone with information was asked to call the sheriff’s department at 812-7238-3911.
