Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Sea Cat 260 Hybrid Bay Catamaran Boat Review
Sea Cat 260 Hybrid Bay Catamaran
The Sea Cat 260 Hybrid Bay offers top speeds of 65-MPH with the 600-HP power option seen here but twin 140’s still pushes her along nicely.
The nature of a Catamaran deck cap offers additional square footage to move around on deck forward.
The ability to add a trolling motor to this 26-footer aids your fishing capabilities greatly.
From rod lockers to insulated fish holds to dry storage, this deck style offers all of it.
Black powder coating and gelcoat on the hardtop underside aid in glare removal on bright sunny days.
This deflector style wind screen frames in a pair of MFD units nicely at the helm face.
The trim work and upholstery on this tandem seat helm station is plush and extremely comfortable.
At the rear of the helm station is a super clean rigging station with tackle storage and a slide track cooler system.
The 260 Hybrid Bay provides plenty of comfortable seating as well during a break from the fishing.
More below deck space flanks each side of the console for fish or gear storage.
You will not find a cleaner more carefully laid out wiring scheme than this and a comprehensive diagram and index identifies each wire separately.
Flip the seat down and a casting deck opens up with matching 25-gallon pressurized live wells on either end.
Bilge systems access is available to port and starboard in the cockpit.
A comfortable riding spot appears by deploying this wide and deep convertible bench at the rear casting deck.

Fishability Test: Sea Cat 260 Hybrid
- By Alex Suescun
- Updated: April 29, 2020
The seaworthiness of the Sea Cat multihull design—with its enclosed racing transom—takes the worry out of offshore jaunts, while its 14-inch draft opens the door to skinny-water forays, and the hull’s stability makes it a superb platform for fishing at any depth, cruising with the family, or enjoying a sandbar picnic.
The lamination schedule formulated by one of the top naval engineering firms, quality fit and finish, premium hardware including Gemlux stainless-steel friction hinges on all lids and hatches, and tinned copper wiring ensure years of trouble-free boating. Much like a big sport-fisher, the Sea Cat is set up with two fuel tanks and two cranking batteries, plus a house battery, enabling each of its twin outboards to run on either of the separate systems.
Sporting clean lines and clutter-free spaces, the layout includes a sizable forward casting deck with ample storage divided into four compartments, one of which serves as a dedicated anchor locker. Two raised outboard boxes that extend aft augment stowage and turn into twin seats or loungers with the optional cushions and removable backrests. Between them, a step leading to the forward deck houses another large compartment, ideal for stashing dock lines and safety gear.
A step back, the forward console seat incorporates a full-height backrest, seats two comfortably, and hides a substantial insulated box underneath that serves as a cooler or accommodates three deep-cycle batteries for a bow-mount trolling motor, leaving enough space for the crew to move from bow to stern unencumbered and gain easy access to the pair of in-floor fish boxes between the console and the port and starboard gunwales, both long enough to fit big pelagics and plumbed with Gulper Grouper waste pumps.
The center console features a wraparound windshield, custom brow with red map light, and dash roomy enough for dual 12-inch multifunction displays, 18-position waterproof-switch panel, stereo and more. SeaStar hydraulic tilt steering and a Livorsi three-spoke steering wheel come standard, and our test boat came with the optional fiberglass T-top with powder-coated aluminum frame, complete with electronics box, LED flood, spreader and overhead lights, and four-rod rocket launcher.
Our test Sea Cat also included a fiberglass helm-seating module with dual adjustable seats with flip-up bolsters and fold-down armrests, tackle station, and aluminum four-rod rocket launcher, a definite upgrade over the standard-issue aluminum leaning post. A bench-style seat accommodates two comfortably at the stern. When it comes time to fish, the backrest folds down flush with the abbreviated aft casting deck, which incorporates twin 25-gallon lighted livewells in the corners, both with clear lids and seawater blue interiors.
Port and starboard hatches take up most of the cockpit floor space aft of the helm, and a raw-water washdown with 20-foot coiled hose and nozzle, and six flush-mount rod holders on the gunwales—all with overboard drains—complete the 260 Hybrid’s list of standard equipment. Nevertheless, additional rod and drink holders, a forward livewell, freshwater shower with 10-gallon tank, electronic power steering, indirect cockpit lighting, and two types of removable ladders are among the most popular available options.
As for performance, the Sea Cat dazzled with its hole shot and acceleration during our test in Miami’s Biscayne Bay. Powered by twin Suzuki 300s, the 26-footer jumped on plane and scooted from zero to 30 mph in 7.9 seconds with minimal bow lift, and wasted no time climbing to 65.6 mph at wide-open throttle.
Driving the Sea Cat is a pleasure. With the pair of Suzuki 300s mounted far apart and power steering eliminating feedback, the boat proved agile and responsive. On S-turns and tight curves, it maneuvered promptly and efficiently with little more than fingertip pressure on the steering wheel.
In typical catamaran fashion, the 260 Hybrid took on waves and large wakes with ease, always coming down softly without jolts, pounding or rattling. Spray, which on the Sea Cat starts even with the helm at planing speed and pushes some 2 feet aft at 5,000 rpm, never made it over the gunwales, no matter our heading in relation to the wind.
The 260 left a great impression. It’s clearly designed and built for discerning anglers who balk at the thought of limitations on the waters and species they target. If only the right dose of inshore, nearshore and offshore fishing will suffice, give the Sea Cat a close look.
Length: 26′ Beam: 8′6″ Draft: 14″ Fuel: 120 gal. Weight: 4,900 lb. Max HP: 600 Price: $122,697 w/ twin Suzuki 140s Sea Cat: seacatboats.com

US couple whose yacht was hijacked by prisoners were likely thrown overboard, authorities say
An American couple who was feared dead after their catamaran yacht was hijacked by three escaped prisoners were likely thrown overboard in the Caribbean Sea, authorities said Monday.
Ralph Hendry, 66, and his wife, Kathy Brandel, 71, were last known to be near Grand Anse Beach in Grenada. Their catamaran, named "Simplicity," was found abandoned in St. Vincent and there were signs of violence at the scene, according to Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force spokesperson Junior Simmons.
Although family, friends, and members of the sailing community had hoped the pair was still alive, police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines said Hendry and Brandel were likely thrown into the ocean when their vessel was hijacked. "Based on the investigation thus far, it is presumed that Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel are deceased," Simmons said in a video statement Monday .
Don McKenzie, police commissioner of the Royal Grenada Police Force, said at a news conference Monday that the three prisoners escaped on Feb. 18 from the South St. George Police Station. They hijacked the catamaran on the following day and traveled to the nearby island of St. Vincent, where they were arrested last Wednesday, he said.
Police: Prisoners 'disposed' occupants of Simplicity
After escaping from the South St. George Police Station, McKenzie said the three prisoners "commandeered" the catamaran, which had two U.S. citizens on board, Hendry and Brandel. The couple were likely thrown into the ocean and died, police in Grenada said.
“Information suggests that while traveling between Grenada and St Vincent, they disposed of the occupants,” McKenzie said.
McKenzie added that while police have "nothing conclusive" to prove that the couple was dead, he cited a "low probability" they were alive.
The suspects are being investigated for several criminal acts, including "bodily harm to the couple," according to Simmons. Authorities discovered signs of violence on the couple’s boat after it was found abandoned, he said.
"Several items were strewn on the deck and in the cabin, and a red substance that resembles blood was seen on board," Simmons said.
Stay in the know: For more updates, sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing.
Police investigating prisoners' escape
According to the Royal Grenada Police Force, the escaped prisoners were identified as Ron Mitchell, 30; Trevon Robertson, 19; and Abita Stanislaus, 25.
All three were arrested and charged in December with one count of robbery with violence. Mitchell also was charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape, and two counts of indecent assault and causing harm, police said.
McKenzie said police have launched an investigation into the escape and are looking into whether it was "a system failure" or a case of a "slip up."
"All aspects of that investigation are on the table," he said, adding that the police holding station where the three men were being held has "sufficient safety to prevent an incident like that (from) occurring."
The three men appeared in court in St. Vincent on Monday and pleaded guilty to four counts each of immigration-related charges, including entering the island as a "prohibited immigrant" with no passport, according to Simmons. They are scheduled to be sentenced on those charges in March.
Simplicity discovered by paddle-boarder near St. Vincent
The Salty Dawg Sailing Association said it was alerted by a cruising skipper about Simplicity, which was found "anchored and abandoned" off a beach on the island of St. Vincent. The association added that its live member’s tracking map showed the vessel anchored in Grenada before it moved to its last anchorage off St. Vincent.
"The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners … were not on board and found evidence of apparent violence," the association said in a statement.
People reported that a sailing captain was paddle-boarding near St. Vincent when he noticed the catamaran with a broken sail. When he boarded Simplicity, he found the deck covered in blood and two passports belonging to Brandel and Hendry, according to People.
The St. Vincent Coast Guard took possession of Simplicity and local police are investigating with the U.S. Embassy and the Grenada police, according to the association.
Family, sailing community mourns couple's disappearance
According to a GoFundMe page raising money for the couple's families, Hendry and Brandel were "seasoned sailors who lived on their beloved catamaran." The pair spent their retirement sailing, the GoFundMe page states.
"This heartbreaking tragedy has left not only the sailing community, but also their families, shattered," the GoFundMe page states, adding that Brandel had recently welcomed her first grandchild.
The couple had sailed their yacht in last year's Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and were spending the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean, the Salty Dawg Sailing Association said. The association noted that the couple were veteran cruisers and longtime members of the association from its earliest days.
"Warm-hearted and capable, they both contributed to building the SDSA and Kathy sat on the association’s board for two years," the association said.
In a statement from the couple's families on Saturday, they thanked authorities and those who helped gather information.
"It means so much to us that so many people cared for Ralph and Kathy as friends and fellow cruisers that they are willing to stop and help in whatever way possible," the couple's sons, Bryan Hendry and Nick Buro, said.
Travel advisories near the Caribbean
Both Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines are listed under a Level 1 travel advisory, according to the U.S. State Department. A Level 1 travel advisory urges U.S. citizens to take normal precautions in the area.
Other Caribbean islands are more dangerous, with Level 2 and 3 advisories in effect for the Bahamas and Jamaica, respectively. The advisory for the Bahamas was issued last month , warning travelers to "exercise increased caution" due to crime in some areas.
A security alert posted by the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas also advised U.S. citizens to be "aware that 18 murders have occurred in Nassau since the beginning of 2024." The alert warns that murders have occurred at all hours including in broad daylight on the streets.

MY CAT Yacht for Sale
Not for sale or charter to U.S. residents while in U.S. waters.
Launched in late 2016, the Gunboat 78 MY CAT is a state-of-the-art 77’78 (23.77m) sailing catamaran built for high speed and elite performance while maintaining all the creature comforts of a luxury yacht. She can reach speeds of up to 30 knots thanks to her lightweight construction in carbon fiber and full carbon rig.
Straight from the drawing boards of Nigel Irens Designs, her striking profile makes her one of the most stand-out catamarans on the water today. MY CAT’s reverse bows, aggressive chine and sheer-line result in a beautiful catamaran, further complimented by her huge bowsprit forward and a metallic blue paint job.
Impressively, MY CAT has been designed with hydraulically retractable daggerboards and rudders. These carbon foils improve performance and stability, making her incredibly seaworthy and effortlessly quick. When fully down, her draft reaches a depth of 3.35 meters but when up, her draft is only 1.3 meters, allowing access to even the shallowest bays and harbors.
MY CAT’s exterior deck spaces are well maintained and perfect for watching the ocean glide by, from her completely shaded aft deck to her foredeck with trampolines. Aft, guests will find the extended carbon coach-roof adequate protection from the weather, but should elements dictate, there are removable plasti-glass side panels that can provide additional protection. To port, the extendable carbon dining table can seat up to 10, while the lounging area to starboard is one of the most popular spots onboard to relax.
In addition, both of MY CAT’s transoms have been extended to create a larger area for swimmers entering and leaving the water as well as safer boarding. The dive bottles are arms reach away along with a dive compressor in the aft deck locker. Her tender is easily launched from two carbon davits between the two hulls.
Though designed for high performance and ocean crossings, MY CAT’s interior spaces have kept luxury living in mind. The spacious salon is bright and open with 360-degree panoramic views connecting guests to the ocean and located to starboard is a dining table comfortably sitting eight. Located centrally and forward is the helm station, affording good views of the jib tell-tales and the main sail trim above through an electrically sliding hatch. Comfortable lounging sofas aft and to port surround a 50” flatscreen television aft of the helm station. A low coffee table opens to a well-stocked bar and wine fridge.
MY CAT can comfortably accommodate eight guests across four cabins with en-suites, with additional berths for up to three crew. Her owner’s cabin is located port-side aft with a large double bed athwartships and en-suite. Her three guest cabins include a VIP cabin starboard aft with large double bed, also athwartships; a double mid-ships to port with bunk fore-aft, and two twin guest cabins forward port with bunks.
As the only Gunboat 78 in existence, MY CAT is an ideal world-cruiser built for high performance, stability and total comfort. She would be equally perfect for exploring the world’s oceans or collecting silverware on the international regatta circuit.

MY CAT’s aft deck is completely shaded from the elements thanks to the extended carbon coach-roof. There are removable plasti-glass side panels that can provide even more protection if conditions dictate.
The extendable carbon dining table on the port side can sit up to 10 guests while the lounging area on the starboard side is among the most popular spots onboard to kick back and relax.
There are two ice makers aft depending on whether your sundowner of choice requires chipped ice or cubes!
Foredeck:
MY CAT’s foredeck is another great area to relax and catch the sun. The vast trampolines are both comfy and an amazing spot to watch the ocean glide by.
Beach Club:
Both transoms have been extended to create a larger area for swimmers entering and leaving the water. The dive bottles are at arm's reach away and there is a dive compressor in the aft deck locker. Interior And Accomodation
Main Salon/Dining Area:
The spacious saloon is bright and open with 360 deg panoramic views connecting you to the ocean.
The helm station is located centrally and forward affording good views of the jib tell-tales and the main sail trim above through an electrically sliding hatch. With the Recaro-like carbon framed seats, it is more akin to a rally car.
There is a navigation area forward to starboard that houses many of MY CAT's control systems. C-Zone monitors and controls most of the yacht's systems while a separate hydraulic system controls winches, rams, etc.
There is a huge amount of redundancy built in.
The starboard side of the saloon has a dining table that comfortably sits eight guests.
There are comfortable lounging sofas aft and to port with a 50” flatscreen on the aft side of the helm station.
The low coffee table opens up to a well-stocked bar which compliments the wine fridge by the navigation area.
Descending from the saloon down the starboard-forward steps we first come to a service area with a top-loading fridge, worktop space, and storage locker for cups and glasses above.
Ahead of this, there is a bright and clean galley with oak veneer, white Corian countertops, and steel paneled appliances, including a Miele dishwasher, Bosch oven, microwave, extractor, and a 4-hob induction cooker.
Ahead of the galley is the crew area with a table, two comfortable chairs, 32” TV. There is ample storage here as well as the Miele Washer-Drier. There are also a number of system screens and panels to allow monitoring and control of the ship's systems.
ACCOMMODATION:
Master Cabin:
MY CAT’s owner cabin is located port-side aft. It is a mirror image of the starboard-side aft except with better AV and some personal touches. Large double bed athwartships. Ensuite bathroom with shower cubicle.
Guests Cabins x 3:
-VIP starboard aft, same layout as the master cabin with large double athwartship, ensuite bathroom, and shower cubicle.
-Double mid-ships on the port side with bunk fore-aft. Ensuite bathroom with shower cubicle.
-Twin guest cabin forward port side with bunks, ensuite bathroom with shower cubicle.
The crew cabin is forward starboard side ahead of the galley. There are two bunk beds with an ensuite bathroom and shower. The crew mess is located ahead of the galley and its sofa transforms into a third crew bunk if necessary.
