Faith deckhand Michael Hanlon's death ruled accidental

A verdict of accidental death has been recorded by an inquest into the death of a crewmember from 62m superyacht Faith in April 2013.

Michael Hanlon, 22, died after falling into the water in Port Vauban, Antibes, after spending a night out with fellow crew. He was reported missing by the yacht's captain, and his body was recovered later by police divers.

South Cumbria deputy coroner Alan Sharpe told Boat International that the inquest's "simple conclusion was accidental death".

The inquest heard from Lars Van Dinther, Faith ’s captain at the time of Hanlon’s death, who said: “We assumed that he had stayed ashore and we waited until about 10am before we started getting concerned and making phone calls.

“A pair of flip flops had been found on the deck earlier in the morning but that did not concern me at the time. Nobody put it together with Michael not being there until later in the day”.

Despite the inquest, exactly how Hanlon ended up in the water remains unclear. His family raised concerns about the hours being worked by Hanlon and the fact that he was unable to access the yacht. A statement from the watch officer was read at the inquest that said all doors on the yacht had been locked at 10pm.

But Faith 's former captain said that he "had no concerns over the procedure on getting on the boat at night”. According to Van Dinther, a coded locker held a spare key that would allow entry, and crew could also ring a bell to wake up the captain or watch officer or wait at the crew door for another member to return.

The deputy coroner said he would be issuing a letter of recommendations to the yacht’s owner and maritime agencies about potential changes in procedure to help crew safety.

Charities have been founded in Michael Hanlon’s memory to collect funds for the UKSA (formerly known as the UK Sailing Academy), with one funding page raising more than £38,000.

Meet the team aboard FAITH.

Published 07 July 2022

FAITH is iconic. A yacht designed and run with zero-compromise, she was built by a discerning owner and has been honed over five years of private operation and now provides the ultimate charter platform for you and your guests. Meet the people who make it all happen aboard this stellar yacht from building snowmen in the Caribbean to baking an Amalfi lemon tart…

On the bridge with... Captain Luke and Captain Nick

When you charter FAITH you are in the safe hands of Captain Nick and Captain Luke. Both have years of seafaring experience under their collective belts, and an intimate knowledge of FAITH and her cruising grounds.

'I was that child who spent his days walking up and down the dock, ' says Captain Nick. 'I went straight to sea after finishing my studies and never looked back. In the 20 years since then, I have circumnavigated the globe and chartered in almost every destination possible.'

Captain Luke, 'I'm Australian Master Mariner with 27 years in the game (time flies when you’re having fun)! For the past 19 years I have worked on charter and private yachts. Every day is an adventure - you never know what lies just around the next headland...'

Now you can discover what is around the next headland when you charter FAITH in the  Mediterranean this summer, and the  Caribbean and  Bahamas next winter.

What sets FAITH apart from other yachts?

FAITH is an icon of her generation and one of the most recognisable yachts in the world. There is no compromise in what FAITH offers - which is the comment we hear most frequently from our guests.

A beach club, that is also a lounge and party bar? Have it all on FAITH

I’d add that, without doubt, a truly unique experience onboard FAITH is the snow room. Where else can you build and dress a 4ft snowman during winter in the Caribbean when it’s 35 degrees outside! Not only is it loads of fun for everyone, the health benefits are also amazing.

The amazing snow room - the health benefits are worth the chill

Tell us about the FAITH crew…

The crew have a level of energy and cohesion which is immediately felt by our guests. We have a reputation for providing guests with their best ever yachting experience and I put a large part of that down to the crew’s passion and desire to exceed expectations.

What do guests' enjoy about FAITH?

Like most things in life, balance is the key and our guests have that on FAITH. It may be that one day they’re feeling adventurous with watersports, and the next day wish to focus on self-care in our wellness centre.

A formal dinner one evening can contrast with a more casual ‘make your own pizza’ experience on the sun deck the following night. Being flexible while still maintaining the highest level of service imaginable is the FAITH standard.

Guests love FAITH's glass-bottom pool

Where is FAITH going to be cruising next winter?

The Exumas (one of my favourite places to cruise) is an absolute must on anyone’s bucket list who want to enjoy a very special natural marine experience - while also enjoying all the comforts FAITH has to offer!

Whether it be diving with the nurse sharks at Compass Quay, swimming with the pigs at Big Major Cay, taking a jetski across the sand flats at Shroud Cay or the most picturesque and private beach BBQ you could ever hope to imagine, there’s something for everyone.

The Bahamas is a well-known itinerary on board FAITH

In the galley with... Head Chef Henrik and Chef Alan

Whether you are in the mood for a full seven-course tasting menu with accompanying wines, or a simple margarita pizza with fresh mozarella and basil, aboard FAITH you have it - thanks to the skills of two gifted chefs, Henrik and Alan. FAITH is equipped with a wood fired pizza oven, charcoal BBQ and bar on the sun deck, wine cellar and a full beach BBQ set-up, so you only need to ask for it to happen.

Head Chef Henrik first entered the superyacht world after he was headhunted... 'About 10 years ago I was invited to work on a superyacht, and I have loved this life ever since. I honed my skills in restaurants in France and Italy - then I hopped the Atlantic to work the US.'

Chef Alan started his career as a young chef in London's Savoy Hotel. 'Then I progressed down the path of Michelin-starred restaurants. This is where I really learned how to cook, working with very talented chefs from all over the globe.'

How does it feel to be a chef on the most beautiful yacht on the charter market?

Happy and proud. The team on board are fantastic and hard-working - which means everything.

Working ashore vs a superyacht chef?

To work on yachts can be different and challenging. That mixed together with the passion to manage and provide anything and everything for our guests, wherever we are in the world, is incredible and rewarding.

I have always had a passion for travel, I enjoy exploring different cultures and discovering their cuisine, so yachting is the perfect fit. As an executive chef I get to work with and meet some amazing people and cook with such diversity.

Henrick and Alan bring Michelin-star dining to FAITH

What do you love to cook?

When our guests arrive on board its show time! Time to show off our skills as chefs - dishes such as our citrus cured Ora king salmon with avocado puree and Beluga royal caviar is always a favourite.

Equally I love nothing more than pizza night on sun deck where we have our wood fired pizza oven for authentic Italian style pizza at its best.

Enjoy pizza from a wood-fired oven on board FAITH

How would you describe your style of cuisine?

Fresh, clean, tasty and vibrant. Food that makes you feel good. We love to cook all varieties of different cuisines to keep things interesting - and to keep learning!

Do you have a favourite dish that is always a winner?

Ah wow, that’s a difficult one. Off the top of my head, spaghetti vongole. Cakes for birthdays and celebrations are always popular too.

Show-stopper delights for a birthday, or just with friends

Where do you go shopping?

We use some of the world’s finest provisioners, where quality is paramount. We also like to use local artisan suppliers, whether that’s an amazing fishmonger who has the freshest line-caught seabass, or stunning fruit and vegetables from the market - there’s nothing better than making a lemon tart with lemons straight from the coast of Amalfi.

Do guests sometimes join you in the galley?

Our guests are always welcome to come into the galley, there’s nothing better than guest interaction. I am more than happy to pass on some of our skills, that could be a little cookery demonstration or more hands on for the guests to do a little cooking themselves - anything is possible.

Available in the Mediterranean this summer, and in the Caribbean this winter, the immaculate 96.6m (316.8ft)   FAITH  welcomes 12 guests in seven cabins. Please enquire for rates.

A Canadian billionaire will be asked to review safety procedures on his £65million super yacht after a 22-year-old British deckhand plunged to his death.

Michael Kors fashion magnate Lawrence Stroll faced criticism over boat access and working hours after Michael Hanlon drowned while the yacht en route to pick up Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Mr Hanlon's family told an inquest that the 22-year-old was 'overworked' from long night shifts in the days leading up to his death at Port Vauban in Antibes in April 2013.

The tragedy could now have an industry-wide impact as the coroner will be making recommendations to boat owners and maritime agencies about changes to safety procedure.

Mr Hanlon was just weeks into his dream job working as a deckhand on Faith when he drowned after an accident while it was docked in southern France.

Serious concerns about procedures were raised at the inquest into the 22-year-old's death after it emerged he was locked out of the 62-metre yacht after returning from a night out with friends.

It heard he may have slipped to his death from the boat while trying to climb up to an 'unofficial emergency entrance' on the upper deck.

Coroner Alan Sharpe recorded a verdict of accidental death at Kendal County Court in Cumbria and will now write to Mr Stroll, 55, regarding safety procedure.

His mother Fiona said: ' I was in regular contact with time in the days leading up to when he died and he hardly had any sleep. He was just completely overworked and exhausted.

'His last messages to me were that he was looking forward to getting some sleep.

'The circumstances in which Michael died are still not clear and its obvious there are lessons to be learned by the industry, its governing bodies, officers and crews.

MICHAEL KORS FASHION MAGNATE

Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, 55, founded Sportswear Holdings Ltd with Hong Kong based Silas Chou.

In 1989 he acquired the then relatively unknown Tommy Hilfiger brand and built it into a world wide brand.

His company then bought a 52 per cent stake in Michael Kors in 2003 and masterminded the successful stock market launch in 2011.

He stepped down from the board after more than a decade of involvement at the fashion house in 2014.

'The coroner will be making recommendations to the boat owners and other maritime agencies about potential future procedural changes to protect anyone and everyone that operate at sea within this sometimes dangerous and unpredictable environment.'

She said that a previous MailOnline article had encouraged a former officer on board the yacht to come forward and help with their case.

'The MailOnline article was crucial as it meant a key witness could come forward and help us cross-examine the captain,' she said.

During the seven-hour long inquest, Mrs Hanlon said her son had worked two night  shifts immediately before his death.

The boat was sailing from the Caribbean across the Atlantic to the seaside town of Antibes and Mr Hanlon had only slept for around two hours before being woken to prepare the yacht for arrival, the hearing was told.

It was intended to go on to collect Catherine Zeta-Jones and her husband Michael Douglas before taking them the short distance to Cannes Film Festival.

'I understand that the boat has to be pristine on arrival but that cannot be at the cost of your crew,' said Mrs Hanlon.

Mr Stroll made his fortune by backing clothing designer Tommy Hilfiger and later buying a majority stake in fashion house Michael Kors.

The father-of-two has an estimated net worth of £1.57billion and collects Ferraris.

In 2013 he paid a record £17million for a rare 1967 Ferrari 275 and in September 2014 there were reports that Mr Stroll was about to acquire the Sauber F1 team.

Captain Lars van Dinther came under questioning from Mr Hanlon's father Bob about the protocol for keeping records of crew member's work and rest hours.

The skipper admitted he was unaware of the hours that Mr Hanlon had worked in the week before he died but added: 'I have no concerns over the procedure on getting on the boat at night.'

He said there was a coded locker with a spare key to gain entry and that crew members can also ring a bell, wake up the captain or watch officer or wait at the crew door for another member to let him in.

'The door on the upper deck would have been a poor choice and wasn't an agreement I knew about,' said captain van Dinther.

The hearing was shown CCTV footage from the marina, known as Millionaire's Quay.

Exhausted from a gruelling work schedule, it showed Mr Hanlon returning to the boat alone after meeting friends at around 11.30pm on Saturday April 6.

However the boat was locked and he was seen to be walking around the decks for around 45 minutes.

A statement was read out from the watchman who said all doors were locked at 10pm.

The exact circumstances as to how he ended up in the water are unclear but the family believe he fell while trying to climb up to a door on the sun deck which was 'common knowledge' among the crew.

The accident happened in the early hours of the following morning. His body was discovered by divers on Monday afternoon.

Mrs Hanlon claimed the family felt manipulated by the French authorities to agree a version of events to allow his body to be released.

'They suggested he had gone and sat on top of the deck to have a cigarette, was tired and had fallen in,' she said.

'That was the line of enquiry they wanted us to follow. If we didn't go along with that version we wouldn't be allowed to fly him home.

'We would have agreed to anything because we were in such a state of shock.'

She said it was not until an autopsy showed injuries to his hand that the family became convinced he was awake when he fell and had tried to soften the fall.

Crucial footage of a fisherman who it is believed heard a splash was not released for the inquest despite attempts to gain the footage from the coroner's office.

Mr Sharpe added the investigation was limited because he was in the hands of the French authorities.

'It is likely that tiredness did contribute to the fall whether that be failing to appreciate the danger he was in or took a false step at some point,' he said.

'There are many other matters which would have meant Michael was still alive today. If he had a key, if there was a night-watchman, if he had returned with another crew member.'

A video was shown to the court of Mr Hanlon's love of life and Mrs Hanlon described him as 'funny, witty and a charmer.'

'We saw him grow from our bouncy little boy into a responsible young chap with a lot of skills and technical ability and responsibility,' she said.

The talented sailor was working on the luxury vessel as part of his degree with the UK Sailing Academy (UKSA).

Since his death, tens of thousands of pounds has been raised in Mr Hanlon's memory to fund scholarships at UKSA.

Captain Makes Clutch Decision to Save Superyacht 'GO' in St. Maarten's Crash

By: Scott Way

motor yacht faith accident

Last week the brilliantly turquoise superyacht GO made headlines for crashing into St. Maarten's Yacht Club. Not once, but twice.

Naturally, internet 'experts' were quick to pounce. With a predictable lack of knowledge, many immediately labeled the crash the result of driver error. Surely no captain could crash one of the world's nicest boats into one of yachting's most famous ports. What the videos lack, like most viral phenomena, is context. The captain of GO was recently interviewed by The Daily Herald to discuss the circumstances surrounding the incident. Predictably, there was far more at play than operator error. If you haven't seen the videos, here's a few different angles of the mishap:

As for the vessel in question, the boldly turquoise GO is a 77m (252 ft) luxury motor yacht designed by H2 and built by the aptly named Turquoise Yachts . It is owned by Capri Sun mogul Hans-Peter Wild . Yes, that Capri Sun, the lovable juice in a bag with the world's most challenging straw. It is entirely computer-driven and packed with deluxe appointments including a pool, jacuzzi, elevator, gym, helipad, and steam room. She runs with a crew of 19 and has 7 cabins for up to 12 guests. It was built in Turkey and launched in 2018 with a pricetag of roughly $100 million USD.

As for the events that transpired, captain Simon Johnson was preparing to depart the lagoon via the rotating land bridge (which you can see in the upper frame of the second video). While roughly 50 metres from the bridge and holding position pending the bridge opening, an electronic error began pushing the yacht forward without steering input. The passage itself is precarious enough as GO carries a 13.5 meter (44 ft) beam and has only 50 cm (1.6 ft) of clearance on either side.

Johnson told The Herald , “With not much water between us and the bridge, I always set to align my stern and get parallel well in time for the bridge opening. We left the dock an hour before and went through all the checks. There was nothing different from the other times we’ve done this exit. I was in good shape."

“Then, when we were about 50 metres away and holding position, the yacht started moving mysteriously forward. There was nothing I seemed to be able to do; all the controls on the bridge were showing normal. I called the engine room and everything was normal down there. I found I had extremely limited control, almost limited to only the bow thruster, but with now only 50 metres between us and the bridge I had to make a decision fast."

The ability to prioritize outcomes while under duress is a valuable trait, and the sign of a good captain, and Johnson was able to calculate a remarkable list of outcomes before choosing a course of action.

“I certainly did not want to put the anchor down. That would have been disastrous. By the time the anchor hit the bottom we would have been 30 metres further in. Then we would have pinned the bow upwind, and slewed the stern towards the rocks and the road bridge.

“We have 160,000 litres of fuel on board. If I had done that, I would not only have disabled the bridge, but potentially breached the hull on the rocks beneath and could have caused an oil spill. My preferred option was to point the bow towards the yacht club dock, and beach her gently there. I had a crew member up front shouting a warning to make sure everyone was out of the way.”

After some initial investigation, it was determined Johnson had 13 roughly seconds to choose a course of action. Having made the passage at St. Maarten's 20 times previously, his knowledge of the boat and the lagoon was undoubtedly valuable.

“The fact that there were no warning alarms, no lights on board to indicate something was wrong was really scary. I know this yacht so well, yet I had 13 seconds to make a decision before hitting the bridge. The decision I made was one I would make again if faced with the same circumstances.”

While internet critics were quick to heap blame upon him, Johnson was justifiable in his criticism of the electronics responsible, calling them “ridiculously over the top” and without manual overrides. On GO in particular, there are 14 computers on the bridge with two more below decks. Insurers will now have the tall task of determining the root of the electronic fault, as well as assessing the extent of the damage to GO and the Yacht Club dock before pursuing repairs.

As for Johnson, “I’m proud that we walked away from a crash landing, and most importantly, there was no injury and the island’s arterial road bridge was not compromised,” he said.

The yacht's owner Hans-Peter Wild was also supportive, releasing a public statement in which he declared he is “extremely supportive of the captain’s decisions and performance. Personnel, economic, environmental disaster was averted for the island. I have full faith and confidence in the captain and am very grateful.”

Feadship Faith (ex. Vertigo) saw the light of day on Wednesday 23 November, which is when this 96.55-metre masterpiece left the construction hall at the Feadship yard in Makkum (NL).

With the outstanding interior and exterior design by Redman Whiteley Dixon and Chahan Interior Design and Azure acting as Owner’s project manager, Faith’s creative execution raises the bar of superyacht design to new levels of sophistication.

The elegant curves of Faith's streamlined profile are in perfect proportion and harmony. The same applies to the characteristically Feadship lines of Faith's flared bow, which features a games deck and helicopter landing pad with a hangar below for a Bell 429 WLG helicopter.

The sweeping hull line leads down and aft towards the main deck aft, home to a revolutionary swimming pool made of glass panels that also form the ceiling of the beach club below. Creating this 68-millimetre-thick construction involved laminating together five layers of clear glass interspersed with foil. To make matters even more complex, the deep end of the 42,000-litre pool has a dramatic S-curved shape and descends to some 2.5 metres. A drop-down cap rail allows an open view to the sea from inside the pool and a curtain of water to flow into the forward section of the pool and fashion a natural divide between this exterior area and the interior.

Padstow speedboat accident: widow tells of ‘big mistake’ with kill cord

Victoria Milligan says neither she nor late husband, Nick Milligan, were attached to equipment designed to cut the boat’s power

The widow of a television executive killed in a speedboat accident told an inquest how he desperately yelled instructions to try to save his family as the powerful vessel circled them after they were thrown into the water.

Victoria Milligan, whose husband, Nick, and their eight-year-old daughter, Emily, were killed in the tragedy, described on Monday how he had told his wife and four children, aged from four to 12, to stick together and stay away from the boat.

Victoria Milligan said: “He was splashing in the water, saying: ‘Stay in the middle, stay in the middle.’ Nicko was telling us to all stay together. The boat was going round very fast, the acceleration was on the highest setting.”

The jury hearing the inquest in Truro was told that Nick and Emily Milligan suffered fatal injuries. They were told that Nick Milligan’s daughter Amber, who survived the accident off the harbour town of Padstow, Cornwall, had shouted to rescuers: “My dad is dead, my dad is dead”, and when she was pulled from the water said that her father had been crying – which she had never seen him do before.

Victoria Milligan, 40, who lost the lower part of her left leg in the accident, told the inquest it was a “big mistake” that neither she nor her husband, 51, were attached to the “kill cord”, which is designed to cut the boat’s power in an emergency.

Describing the period before the accident, she said: “Nicko said he needed a wee and put Milly [the speedboat] into neutral, and removed the kill cord from around his leg. I went up to the steering wheel. I had always done this to ensure that Kit [their youngest child] did not interfere with the controls.

“I stood by the steering wheel and Nicko returned to the bow of the boat and started to play with the children. The sea was flat and calm and I decided to drive Milly back to the mooring. I did not put the kill cord around my leg because it was only a short distance to the mooring.

“As I started to drive, the children all called out that they wanted to go around again. Nicko then said: ‘Turn right, turn right’ … He then grabbed the wheel with his right hand and accelerated.

“I remember the acceleration was not smooth and it jerked. I remember feeling like we had hit a wall and we all fell out. We all fell into the water. Kit was screaming as I grabbed him.

“I was not aware of where the others were but as I swam with Kit the boat came straight towards me and hit me in the chest. It caught my leg and I saw lots of blood.”

Asked about the kill cord, she said: “I didn’t put it back on because I thought Nicko was going to come back and take over. Obviously that was a big mistake.”

The inquest was told that Nick Milligan died from significant head injuries and Emily from multiple injuries. Both could have sustained their injuries either because of their ejection from the speedboat, impact with the water, or blunt impact from the boat.

Mr Milligan, who was a senior Sky Media executive, and the family, from Wandsworth in south-west London, were in Cornwall for a bank holiday break in May last year.

Asked by Cornwall coroner Emma Carlyon about falling out of the boat, Victoria Milligan replied: “I saw the boat speed away from us – that’s all I can remember. It all happened very quickly.

“I thought maybe we had hit something. It was so sudden and we didn’t have a chance. One second we were in the boat and the next second we were in the water.”

Rescuers and witnesses described how the event unfolded. Toby Courtauld described seeing the boat “bounce” and spill the occupants. “The boat carried on in a starboard circle. On the third or fourth circuit of the group I heard but did not see a collision. I knew there was a collision because of the change in the engine sound and it sounded like it had hit something and slowed down.”

Kayaker James Anderson, who was paddling with his daughter Leigh and her boyfriend, said: “It was only a matter of time before the boat came into contact with the people in the water. As the boat collided with the group of people the engine almost stalled. After colliding with the party the engine resumed its revs and continued on its rotations.”

Water sports instructor Charlie Toogood told the inquest how he watched the disaster unfold from shore and jumped into his boat with colleague Will Jones to try to stop the speedboat. He said they got in front of the boat and released a rope in the hope of jamming its propeller. He then leapt on board and stopped it.

Nick Milligan was found to have 56mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal drink drive limit is 80mg per 100ml.

The inquest continues.
