1974 Koopmans 36 Polka Mazurka
Nam Le published The Boat to great acclaim in 2008. Now he's back with his debut poetry collection
In 2004, when Australian writer Nam Le moved to Iowa City, he took up an unusual hobby: poker.
It was four years before the publication of The Boat, the collection of short stories that won the 2009 Prime Minister's Literary Award and designated Le as one of the brightest stars of Australian writing.
Le had given up his law career in Melbourne to attend the prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop, a graduate-level creative writing program whose alumni include Eleanor Catton, A M Homes and Curtis Sittenfeld.
Poker was a popular pastime among Iowa City's many "writers and poets and ruffians" who would get together to drink, "talk shit and bluff and lose their money", Le tells ABC RN's The Book Show .
And, in doing so, they established "a sideways rapport with one another".
But what began as a passing interest soon became a more serious pursuit for Le.
"It was the perfect counterpoint to writing for me," he says.
"When I was playing — and I haven't played since 2016 — it coincided with such a productive period in my writing."
Le spent hours playing the game, closely observing his opponents and learning to read their tics and expressions.
"[It was] a masterclass in psychology", he says.
He also found the poker table strangely liberating; one of the few places where social divisions like class, gender and ethnicity held no sway.
"When you're around a poker table, none of that matters," he says.
"It felt to me, in a weird way, like the most joyful escape from so many of the strictures of society … It was a place where people had to deal with each other as they were."
Le stopped playing poker when he became a father in 2016. With a family to support, money took on new significance.
"To play properly, you have to think of the money as just a way of keeping score," he says.
Otherwise, "you lose your edge".
He may have given up poker, but Le is still writing.
His latest offering is a collection of poetry, 36 Ways of Writing a Vietnamese Poem, which was published in March.
The ambiguity of poetry
While Le says he still has a novel in the works, he has found poetry offers a less problematic mode of expression than prose.
"There's a notion that in poetry, for me anyway, I feel I can preserve my ambiguities a lot more," he says.
In 36 Ways, Le grapples with deeply personal questions of identity, belonging and language.
"I want to write about my own experience and do so in a way where I don't feel as though I'm extracting or performing," he says.
"I also want to convey the work not as an answer, not as a means to a message, but more as an invitation to a process … [asking] how do I write in this language from this standpoint, and from this history?"
In the poem [7. Violence: Paedo-affective], Le invites the reader to "think about the children" whose lives were disrupted by war, displacement and immigration to WEIRD ("Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic") countries.
Like Le, who was born in Vietnam in 1978 and arrived in Australia as a baby — these children were "ever-orphaned from / mother country and tongue", a form of cultural exile which, for many, became a source of shame.
"I don't read Vietnamese, I don't write Vietnamese and I speak it at a very basic level," Le says.
"It's such a tender spot for me thinking about what it is to be fluent in and to write in a language that my parents don't really read, and which is a palpable demonstration of my distance from my parents and from my natal soil," he says.
Le tries to capture the grief and ambiguity of this linguistic estrangement in his poetry.
"When I'm talking about writing a Vietnamese poem, I'm very much talking about it in one way from a caustic point of view of, 'This is where I am, and I wish it were not so in some ways'," he says.
However, he does relish writing in English.
"I love the language, and I love the ability of the language to contain and, in some ways, honour a lot of those tensions and ambivalences."
Writing and the 'trauma industry'
In poems such as [4. Aegic / All-encompassing], Le writes about the trauma of the refugee experience:
Hold to trauma. Even if it never happened to you. You may claim it. Your blood contains it. What happened to them — Your parents, theirs, all their kin — Who don't talk about it Because of what happened to them — Is yours to take and tell. Their harm / your hurt You may write it. For it is written. In the very walls of your cells.
Le says of the poem: "It is an extremely heartfelt, devastated lament; an exhortation to oneself or to another writer to be brave and … to unravel those roots — and so many of the roots of immigrants are traumatic."
He acknowledges trauma is the reason many writers are compelled to put pen to paper. "The wound is where you go if you want to find the energy."
But tapping into trauma has its risks.
"It can have the effects of encapsulating and commodifying and then absolving those people involved in the consumption of that trauma from any real deep consideration of that trauma or potentially even their complicity or culpability," he says.
Le remains wary of contributing to "a trauma industry … where writers are expected to [write] and rewarded for writing about ancestral or ethnic trauma" that has emerged around immigrant stories in particular.
"This notion of 'you can write it because of who you are, or some sort of line of epigenetic ancestry that you've uncovered' feels … very ripe for exploitation," he says.
On becoming a writer
In Le's writing, place and character are intimately connected. "Where one stops and the other starts is completely unknown and ambiguous and probably unknowable," he tells ABC RN's Blueprint for Living .
"Sometimes I think of character as a subset of place and sometimes I think of place as a subset of character."
Le now lives in Melbourne with his family but early in his career he spent four formative years in the United States, completing his MFA in Iowa and several residencies, and serving as the fiction editor of the Harvard Review.
It was in the US — where some of the stories in The Boat are set — that he found his feet as a writer.
He says of his time in Iowa City: "I fell in love with the strangeness — to me — of the place, the newness of all the stuff that I was learning, all of the writers that I was being introduced to."
He was particularly captivated by the Midwest's "big sky" and dramatic weather.
"For me, it's intrinsically soaked into my writing and my sense of myself as a writer," he says.
In 2006, Le undertook a residency in Provincetown, a small town on the tip of Cape Cod in Massachusetts renowned for its liberal culture.
It was winter when Le arrived in "P-town", as it's affectionately known, and the tourist spot was deserted. "I was living in this three-storey barn, wind from the Atlantic tearing through all of the beams and boards," he recalls.
The solitary days he spent writing, sealed indoors from the cold, were counterbalanced by the camaraderie provided by a tight knit community of fellow writers.
"It was the perfect life of a writer," he says.
These literary interludes confirmed his commitment to writing.
"For me, going to Iowa and then to P-town, it was almost the universe meeting my dare and saying, 'OK, well, you say you need time, you say you need space, you say you need community, you say you need commitment, you say you need all these things to write — here you go, can you do it?'
"And you know, it was tough, but it was also thrilling, and I did do it."
36 Ways of Writing a Vietnamese Poem is published by Scribner.
