Oyster 565 A

Oyster style and performance

The oyster 565 is amongst the best 60 foot yachts for sale, built using the most robust marine design and technology available and specified well-beyond normal requirements, to withstand the toughest of environments..

The 57 foot hull of the 565 is designed, engineered and certified to meet Lloyd’s Register Certification and constructed using the highest quality materials. It features a reinforced, monolithic composite structure for superior strength, stiffness and weight-optimisation, with further reinforcement in the slam zones and keel area.

Incorporating the latest nautical and domestic technology, every element from the hull, winches, through to the generator and door hinges are specifically specified for performance, strength and longevity. The levels of finish and luxury are of the highest standards thanks to the skill of our designers and master craftspeople. Every detail of the Oyster 565, from the strength of the hull, down to the smallest fixing, has been considered for outstanding robustness and seaworthiness to give you complete confidence at sea.

Oyster’s DNA runs through the length and breadth of the 565’s sleek lines. Naval architect Rob Humphreys-designed twin rudder hull form creates a longer waterline, delivering meaningful power and balance.

Packed with features cascaded down from our larger yachts – from the signature triple Seascape windows to the optional superyacht inspired hydraulic bathing deck, the 565 is a true luxury 60 foot sailboat for sale. The instantly recognisable deck saloon offers the perfect place for guests to relax under sail or at anchor. Twin helm stations are centrally located aft of the cockpit and with concealed lines, together with flush fore and aft decks, moving around is safe and easy, while providing ample space for entertaining.

The Oyster 565 is a joy to sail shorthanded or with a crew.

Designed for fast cruising, this 60 foot sailing yacht has an impressive turn of speed. The standard push-button in-mast furling, with a fractional-rigged sail plan, make her easily manageable in any conditions.

Twin helm positions house the intuitive powered sailing controls and navigation equipment, with electric winches in easy reach. A fixed bowsprit accommodates a choice of asymmetric sails and the 105% overlapping headsail. Her wide-beam aft and twin rudders make her sure-footed and well-balanced in boisterous seas, yet light, direct and agile on the helm. On long passages, she ticks off the miles effortlessly and when arriving safely at your destination, her optional, powerful, retractable bow and stern thrusters make her simple to manoeuvre – spin her on her keel and slide into the tightest berths.

The exceptional volume below decks offers the opportunity to create stylish contemporary interiors that make a real home from home.

Oyster 565 Galley

Contemporary luxury and comfort

The interior of the oyster 565 offers an expansive sense of space not normally found on a 60 foot sailing yacht, thanks to the volume created by her generous beam..

Well-appointed throughout, the social spaces, galley and cabins are all well-proportioned, comfortable and luxurious, while being eminently practical. With materials, fixtures and fittings carefully considered, from the mood lighting system to the saloon table, optional day bed and intuitively positioned grab rails – everything is specified to the highest standard. Oyster’s attention to detail reveals itself in everything from the beautiful handcrafted cabinetry, hand-assembled wiring loom, to the rubber mounted wooden floors that eliminate floorboard creaks. With a choice of versatile cabin layouts, there is space for up to six guests and on extended ocean passages the versatile work room doubles as a cabin for an additional crew member.

Oysters are a platform for adventure, designed to take you anywhere in the world in luxury, comfort and safety.

Informed by decades of owner adventures, the Oyster 565, the best 60 foot sailboat, is a liveaboard yacht designed for long periods at sea. Every inch has been considered to provide a welcoming environment, extensive stowage and easy access for maintenance.

On deck, a convenient forward sail locker and a full width lazarette aft provide excellent stowage. Down below, the heavily cored hull creates a real sense of peace and calm, a safe haven in heavy weather. Home luxuries include full-sized appliances in the longitudinal galley, which is well designed and equipped for cooking at sea. The saloon is light and spacious, with excellent natural ventilation from the forward opening saloon windows and optional air conditioning. The generous cabins, quality, deep mattresses, island berths, mirrors, cedar lined wardrobes and en suites create living spaces that are relaxed and comfortable.

All new Oysters feature technology you would expect and the 565 is no exception.

Equipped with a variety of convenient and connected tech, living aboard is easier, more enjoyable and safer than ever before. From Infotainment systems, wireless sound and sophisticated mood lighting, through to optional internet, WIFI and enhanced navigation systems, the 565 delivers on technology we take for granted. The dedicated navigation station in the heart of the saloon is the technology hub, featuring a optional PC, lift-top desk; plotter; VHF radio; power management; generator control; switchboard; and plenty of power sockets. It doubles as the ideal work-aboard space and is home to the Oyster Command™ system – Oyster’s intuitive digital switching system which connects everything including entertainment, utilities, lighting and monitoring systems. It can also be accessed from the helm station and additional touchscreens can be fitted in cabins as an optional extra.

What is behind the surge in new 60ft plus yacht designs and can you sail one safely without pro crew?

  • Toby Hodges
  • January 13, 2017

New yacht design has taken a giant leap in average length. Toby Hodges reports on the boom in big boats

Oyster 625

Looking along the row of new yachts berthed stern-to at Cannes Boat Show in September, it seems impossible that just a few years ago a yard might hold up its 55-footer as the flagship of its fleet. In 2016, it’s the new yachts between 55ft and 80ft from the production yards that really stand out. So what has changed? Why the sudden surge in new large yachts and is it really possible to sail them without professional crew?

The 60ft plus market represents only around 120 yachts worldwide per year, but according to Oyster CEO David Tydeman, there is a need for variety. “Where Beneteau likes the fact that we series-build €5m boats, we like the fact that Beneteau does €1m series builds,” he says. “It brings people into the industry.”

Customers range from those wanting short-term sailing holidays and second home use, to those exercising long held dreams to sail offshore in the utmost comfort. It’s a wide range of people being targeted by a wide range of brands and from the list of boats yet to be launched, it’s evident that the majority of builders have bet against this size segment being a passing fad.

Who is building new yachts over 60ft?

The volume production yards have been growing their flagship models, mostly launched in the last year or two, to fulfil demand in the 55-65ft sector. This is perhaps indicative of an increasing number of impulsive buyers on today’s new yacht market; those who don’t want to wait for a couple of years for their yacht are going to be more attracted to the volume-built boats.

Models over 65ft are typically still the domain of luxury bluewater cruising brands, such as Oyster and Contest; prestige brands, such as CNB and Euphoria; or performance semi-custom designs from the likes of Swan, Solaris, Mylius and Advanced Yachts. Highlights include X-Yachts’s 65ft X6 (see X6 on test ), the Grand Soleil 58 Performance; Mylius’ striking new 76; the Turkish Euphoria 68 (see Euphoria 68 on test ) and the luxurious new Contest 67CS ( see video review here ), not to mention the new Oysters 675 and 745.

Contest 67CS: The owner of this first 67CS started sailing in Norway in September 2009, aged 40. Since then he has owned two yachts, completed an ARC crossing and sailed with his wife in the Caribbean five times a year. “We were looking for a bigger yacht for longer stays but which we can still sail with the two of us.” They plan to sail the boat themselves, but add that for “maintenance and preparations it is smart to have professionals who know our Contest 67CS.”

At the 60ft plus size range, yards have to be flexible to be competitive. Prospective buyers expect their yachts to be semi-customised; rather than simply ticking options boxes, they want the yard to listen to their individual choices, styles and needs.

Volume producers will offer a lengthy list of layouts, fabrics and finishes, while the high-end builders will typically offer major hull variations, including different transom designs, rig options, and appendage types, with interior layouts only really constrained by watertight bulkheads. Those braving the first of a new model line may get extra privileges in this respect.

Mylius 76

Mylius 76: In many ways, Mylius’s yachts are a total contrast to the large, luxury cruising yachts of northern European yards. The all-carbon builds are super-minimalist throughout; modern turbo-charged Italian head-turners for smoking across the Med in style and enjoying the odd regatta. Pictured right is the flush-deck version. The deck saloon model (far right interiors) is novel and niche – a fascinating combination of space, speed and style.

High volume production

Of the volume yards, Hanse arguably led the way with its 630e back in 2006, 70 of which were built. Equally impressive is that the German yard then went on to sell 175 of its 575 in the last four years. This year Hanse launched the 675, its largest volume production yacht to date.

Hanse 675 interior

Hanse consistently wows with its loft-style interiors – more like a luxury apartment in fact on this, its largest model yet, the new 675.

Groupe Beneteau brands all now have yachts in the 60ft plus size range. The Bordeaux 60 caused a stir when it launched in 2008 – hull number 46 is in build – bringing trappings of superyacht glamour to the production market. The follow-up CNB 76 made a striking debut at Cannes in 2013. This contemporary Briand design uses an innovative construction method to reduce build time and cost. Seventeen of the €2m 76s have now sold, leading CNB to commission designs for a new smaller sister, the 66 (see page 33). To give some indication as to the demand at this size, CNB has already sold eight of the smaller yachts despite only releasing initial designs in September, and has also just announced it will take on 100 more workers to meet demand.

CNB 76

CNB 76: The 76 is a powerful yet elegant yacht with a well-camouflaged deck saloon, proper crew accommodation and a practical tender garage. A modular build scheme allows CNB to construct the entire interior of the 76 outside of the hull, dramatically reducing build time (to six months) and cost. The win-win result is superyacht styling and engineering, yet with a serial production price starting at €2m.

Unlike CNB, which is originally a builder of large custom yachts, the other volume production yards and Groupe Beneteau brands are upsizing. Superyacht designers Philippe Briand and Andrew Winch collaborated to produce one of the most successful of these – the Jeanneau 64 launched in 2014. It marries the worlds of big boat design, luxury and comfort with production boat pricing – its base price was kept below €1m – offering 10ft more yacht than an equivalent-priced semi-custom model.

Sister brand Beneteau has now followed suit with its Oceanis Yachts 62 this year. This is the first of a new luxury range from 53-73ft for which Beneteau went to a motorboat designer to find new styling solutions. The result is a bold look and a host of new comfort solutions throughout. Also, the goal with the pricing was even more ambitious than Jeanneau – its €650,000 base price shows how competitive pricing has become, even at this size level.

Oceanis Yachts 62

Oceanis Yachts 62: Beneteau is arguably the most innovative production yacht brand. Here it’s taken ideas and styling from its motorboat side to create this first of an entirely new line. The 62 brings a commendable feeling of luxury both on deck and below, plus has a proper tender launching solution for a Williams Jet Rib. The crunch part? Its base price starts at just €650,000.

Dufour will have a new 63ft flagship as of January, which, like the Oceanis Yachts, is the first of a new premium-end ‘Exclusive’ range.

All of which leaves Bavaria as the last big volume yard without a 60-footer. This is mainly down to its in-line production method, which has, to date, limited the maximum length of yacht it can build. However this summer Bavaria changed the set-up of one of its production lines to address this limitation, so we can presume that it’s only a question of time before the largest sailing Bavaria model yet is announced.

The practicalities

Large yachts are getting ever easier to handle. Push-button electrics and hydraulics that allow loads to be managed reliably have created new possibilities for managing sizable yachts short-handed. Thrusters – both bow and stern – are the norm at this size and can alleviate concerns with mooring, while advances in deck-gear technology have made sail-handling much easier.

As in the car industry, space has become king. Added length in yachts can bring increased comfort, elegance and speed, but there are downsides. With extra volume and weight comes a linear increase in the size and cost of each bit of deck gear and rigging needed to bear the extra loads.

Sailing a push-button power-assisted yacht might be a one-person affair, but managing and maintaining it is a different prospect altogether. Large yachts increase the crew’s dependence on powered systems and machinery, from gensets, watermakers, air con and thrusters to the hydraulics needed to operate winches, sail systems, garage doors etc. Keeping such a yacht shipshape is likely to involve a great deal of time afloat servicing machinery, or regular shore periods and pit stops. The less mechanically minded owners will probably need to employ a skipper or paid hand for this purpose.

Solaris 58

Solaris: Once a custom yacht builder, Solaris has become a serial manufacturer of premium performance cruisers. Its range now spans from 37-72ft, with an Acebal-designed 55 and 68 in the pipeline.

Need for crew?

Up until 2011, when Hallberg-Rassy brought out its HR64, a yacht that was designed specifically for two people to sail and manage, I would have said that 57ft was the transition point from owner-operated yacht to crewed yacht. But yachts have continued to grow since then.

Skip Novak, who runs two expedition yachts – one 54ft and the other 74ft – says: “We can do things with [the 54ft] Pelagic that we wouldn’t dare do with Pelagic Australis . Pelagic is ‘man-handleable’, while the big boat at 74ft and 55 tonnes displacement is not. The systems on the smaller boat are by nature simpler, and the cruises usually are more trouble-free technically.”

Most new yachts over the 55ft mark have the option for a crew cabin of some sort. The big question is, are you happy sharing your yacht with paid hands? For temporary quarters, during a short charter for example, the forepeak-style box that is self-contained away from the rest of the accommodation may be all that is required in terms of accommodation. But for any owners seeking a longer-term crew – and wishing to retain reliable crew for any period of time – a more comfortable arrangement within the interior, like the use of a Pullman cabin, is necessary.

The current Oyster range spans the crossover between owner-operated yachts and crewed yachts, which helps to illustrate where the actual dividing line between the two might lie. For example, none of the 20 Oyster 625 owners uses a skipper full-time, although three of the 20 use skippers for when the boat is in charter mode. The new 675, which has been developed as a larger version of the 625, is also designed to be a yacht that can be owner-run. The new 745 on the other hand, which also launched this September, is designed to be run with two professional crew.

I sailed with Tim and Sybilla Beebe six years ago on a passage test of an Oyster 575 from Palma to Spain. They have since run an Oyster 68, a 72 and Tim is currently skippering Eddie Jordan’s Oyster 885, Lush. We discussed at what size level an owner should be thinking about employing a full-time crew.

“Firstly it’s dependent on experience,” says Beebe. “Can the owner sail the boat safely and do they want the responsibility? I agree that after 60ft, the time spent on upkeep starts to outweigh the enjoyment of it… unless you are living on it full-time.

“There are companies that will look after a 60ft boat and have it ready for owners when they arrive,” Beebe continued. “The amount of time needs to flexible. You can allot time for cleaning – inside and out – but maintenance must be flexible. There are always surprises.”

So where might a potential new owner be caught out? “The basic maintenance to keep the boat running is not too bad on a 60-footer but it’s the little bits that might get overlooked, which can quickly add up. You have to stay on top of everything. Winch maintenance, for example, might surprise the average new owner: to properly service all the winches takes a good deal of time – and is a once-a-season job.”

What advice would Beebe give owners of 60-70-footers looking to employ and keep a good crew? “Maintaining good relations is key. You all have to get on in a small space. From my experience, forward planning is nice to have, plus adequate time with guests off the boat for maintenance. Of course the occasional day off doesn’t go amiss either.”

Case study: Oyster 745 for bluewater cruising with family and friends

Henrik Nyman has sailed all his life on a variety of different sized boats, including owning and chartering various yachts and is now upgrading from an Oyster 625 to a 745 for bluewater cruising with friends and family. Why move to a yacht that needs crew? “Size alone is not a factor. For me, quality, engineering and function were my drivers… I thought 60ft was the maximum I could handle without crew, but in fact I feel that the 745 should be no trouble mainly due to very well thought-out functions and engineering. Handling is one part, but also you want crew for comfort, to go to the supermarket, some meals, formalities etc… I can sail basically alone but I want a good deckhand, mainly for safety purposes and for maintenance as well. “My biggest concern is that the equipment installed does not meet the same quality as the yacht itself. My experience from the 625 is that the majority if not all warranty issues are caused by third party installations.”

Case study: Discovery 67 – trading up for extra space

Simon Phillips is a highly experienced cruising and racing sailor, who has gradually scaled up in size from a Sonata, a Sadler 29, a Hanse 47e and a Discovery 55. He bought his 67ft Sapphire 2 of London this June and his main reason for trading up was to gain space. “ Sapphire is 40 per cent larger inside which makes a big difference if you’re planning to spend 18 to 24 months on board. My wife and I are actively planning for the World ARC.” Phillips hasn’t used a professional crew before, but has employed delivery companies to do short deliveries due to time pressures. He normally sails with friends and contacts. “Sapphire is much more technical than the Discovery 55. Her size requires more planning and thought on where you can go etc. While it is possible to sail the yacht single-handed you really need one crew on the helm and three on lines to come alongside in any sort of windy and tidal conditions.”

Showcase boats: Recent and upcoming launches in the 60ft plus category

Vismara 62

Vismara 62: Vismara is a custom carbon yacht builder that has now introduced some semi-custom series. The V62 is based on the success of the Mark Mills designed racer-cruiser SuperNikka . A mould was taken from her hull and adapted to make it more cruiser friendly.

Hallberg-Rassy 64

Hallberg-Rassy 64: “Push button controls are the only way you could handle a boat of this size without a big crew and our owners absolutely don’t want that,” said Magnus Rassy at the time of our HR64 test. “A huge amount of care has gone into making a boat that will be easy to sail long-distance, to maintain and to continue to use when things stop working.”

Dufour 63 Exclusive

Dufour 63 Exclusive: Due to launch at the Düsseldorf Boat Show in 2017, Dufour’s new flagship is a response to those from Beneteau, Jeanneau and Hanse and is the first of its new Exclusive range. The 63 is a yacht that maximises exterior comfort with a 5m long cockpit and exterior galley option alongside a tender garage.

CNB 66

CNB 66: The Bordeaux 60 and CNB 76 have both been true success stories. This 66 is very much the smaller sister to the 76 and looks set to replace the 60. “With the 66 the idea was to be able to sail without crew,” says CNB’s Thomas Gailly. “So we wanted it to be very simple, with no lift keel option or retracting anchor arm – easy to maintain and use.”

Baltic 67

Baltic 67: Over the past few years, Baltic Yachts has launched some of the finest new carbon superyachts, but its recent announcement of a new serially produced model marks a return to the more moderate-sized fast cruisers it was known for in the past.

Advanced Yachts 62

Advanced Yachts 62: Advanced Yachts uses some of the leading design firms to represent Italian luxury performance at its best, with models from 44-100ft. And this new A62 looks simply sensational.

Amel 64

Amel 64: This is one of the first 60+ footers truly designed for a couple only for bluewater cruising.

Find out more here – or in the videos below.

Below is the video of our two day liveaboard test aboard the smaller sister Amel 55, a model which launched at a similar time to the 64 and shares her updated design features.

Exploring new frontiers, getting to know places of pristine nature and crystal clear waters also means trying to reduce emissions. For this reason, the R&D office of the Azimut|Benetti Group brings to the Magellano 60 the high-efficiency semi-planing Dual Mode hull designed to optimize fuel consumption and emissions, especially at low and medium speeds.

Furthermore, the Dual Mode hull guarantees safety by satisfying a variety of needs, starting with seaworthiness: characterized by a marked deadrise at the bow, the hull allows smooth passage over the waves and has all the qualities to handle variable weather and sea conditions at a range of speeds.

Equipped with shaft-line propulsion, the crossover can comfortably cruise at 18 knots and reach up to 26, ensuring performance and comfortable navigation for guests on board.

Magellano 60 is the first yacht powered by HVOlution , the biofuel produced by Eni Sustainable Mobility with 100% renewable raw materials*. The combined effect of the Dual Mode hull and biofuel has made it possible to achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions well-to-wake exceeding -80% compared to a yacht of comparable size powered by fossil diesel, confirming the effectiveness of the path charted by Azimut.

What Is The Best Size Cruising Yacht?

By Robert Bowman | Posted On Mar 25, 2024 Updated On Mar 26, 2024

Making the right decision when it comes to choosing what cruising yacht to buy can mean the difference between the trip of a lifetime or the quick realization that you should have gone bigger. Of course, everything depends on the various ways you plan to use your boat through the span of your ownership experience. This is truly where having an honest discussion with a reputable, professional yacht broker can save you the heartache of making the wrong choice.

Here are some things to consider when choosing the best size cruising yacht :

  • What are the most common sizes of cruising yachts?
  • What are the top cruising yacht builders?
  • What are some examples of available cruising yachts for sale?

If you have dreams of exploring the Bahamas, completing the Great Loop, or just want to be able to entertain friends on the water, a boat designed for cruising might be the best type to consider. Cruising boats often have particular characteristics for comfort purposes so that the owner and their guests can enjoy their trip with many of the same amenities as home. Comfort features like larger water tanks, air-conditioners in each cabin, an extra generator, and additional storage are all examples of attributes of a boat that are generally important for this type of owner.

To determine what the best size cruising yacht is, there are a number of questions you must consider such as how many guests you plan to invite on board at one time, how many nights do you see yourself staying on board, how far you plan to cruise, and what amenities from home are most important to you. For example, a full sized refrigerator and galley appliances may be necessary should you plan to stay at sea for weeks at a time. Cruising to Alaska may mean you need a more fuel-efficient yacht with larger fuel tanks. This is where an in-depth conversation with your broker can make a difference.

(Below: Fleming Yachts are often called 'The Ultimate Cruising Yacht'.)

1. What Are The Most Common Sizes Of Cruising Yachts?

It's easier to break down the various sies of yachts in groups of 10-feet. Unless there is a drastic difference in the layout of the boat, there isn't much noticeable difference between a boat that has a 2 or 3 foot difference in length overall.

  • 35 to 39-feet : Considered a smaller cruising boat, this length of vessel is capable of comfortable overnight trips, coastal cruising, generally has lower overall fuel costs, and normally is equipped with some kind of small cabin with a convertible berth for sleeping. An example of a boat in this range could be a downeast style.

example of downeast cruising boat

  • 40 to 49-feet : This is an excellent size range for a first time cruising yacht owner. With today's joystick and docking technology, a 40-foot plus size cruising boat can offer more of a seating area, a higher range, and normally has 2 cabins with a shared head.

example of 49 foot cruising boat

  • 50 to 59-feet : A popular range for experienced cruisers, at under 60-feet this is still ideal for the owner/operator who wants to cruise without a captain. This begins the small motor yacht range where vessels can have up to 3 staterooms if desired. Owners of cruising boats in this range can stay on board for a greater amount of time.

example of 56 foot cruising yacht

  • 60 to 69-feet : For some, a captain might be needed in this range if you haven't had the previous ownership experience of a similar-sized vessel. Getting insurance in this range can also depend on your overall experience level. Cruising boats in this range can have up to 3 or 4 cabins and accommodate up to 8 guests. There are also modest crew cabins available in this size range.

2. What Are The Top Cruising Yacht Builders?

Trying to select the best cruising yacht builder is similar to choosing what auto manufacturer you like the best or home builder. Everyone has their own unique style and taste and many builders are quite similar in quality. If you've hired a yacht broker to assist you in your search, their experience and knowledge regarding certain builders or particular models can be invaluable.

One method of due diligence in choosing the right cruising yacht is to look at some of the more prestigious awards that are given in the industry. For example, you can easily search the Boat Builder Awards, the World Yacht Trophies, and the European Powerboat Awards to see what builders won in their category.

Many of the industry magazines, such as Power & Motor Yacht and Yachting Magazine, continually post reviews of boats, as does BoatTest.com. While it's rare to see many negative remarks about any of the tested boats, the editors adhere to a strict ethical code of providing truthful and objective opinions about each boat. Other factors to consider are what brand of engine and equipment are chosen by the builder. No matter what cruising boat you decide to purchase, it won't be long before it needs to be serviced. Popular engine and equipment manufacturers are easier on warranty claims, receiving replacement parts, and serviced in general.

Here are some of the top cruising boat builders according to number of boats on the market:

  • Cruisers Yachts
  • Fairline Yachts
  • Galeon Yachts
  • Grand Banks Yachts
  • Hampton Endurance Yachts
  • Hinckly Yachts
  • Kadey-Krogen
  • Meridian Yachts
  • Nordic Tugs
  • Outer Reef Yachts
  • Prestige Yachts
  • Princess Yachts
  • Sabre Yachts

There are more cruising yacht builders than what is listed above, some are still producing new boats and some aren't, but still have boats on the brokerage market. Search all boat brands here .

3. What Are Some Examples Of Good Cruising Yachts Currently Available For Sale?

Below are 15 examples of available cruising yachts for sale on the brokerage market today, in order by size. Greener and Better: the Silent 60

  • By Chris Caswell
  • December 16, 2022

Silent-Yachts 60

If there was any question that the “Tesla moment” has arrived in yachting, the Silent 60 clearly provides a positive response.

Consider, for a moment, crossing oceans in silence at 5 to 6 knots without consuming a drop of fuel and never needing to plan your course between fuel stops. Imagine sitting at anchor and running the air conditioning all night, not to mention all the galley appliances plus the washer-dryer, without the hum or fumes from a genset.

During my time aboard the Silent-Yachts 60, the electric yacht cruised easily at 8 knots. When I whipped out my sound meter, it barely registered 52 decibels, which is about the sound of a dishwasher. The Silent monitors at the helm showed we were charging our 286 kWh lithium batteries at more wattage than we were using to spin the 340 kW motors, so we were ahead of the power-usage game—and this was in South Florida rain under a solid cloud layer. Had we upped the ante to the yacht’s top speed of 20 knots, it would have been drawing from rather than adding to the batteries, but the speed capability gives skippers the option to outrun weather (or just get to the best moorings first).

The Silent 60 is a catamaran design for several reasons. First, the twin hulls are easily driven to minimize the power needed. Second, with nearly 30 feet of beam, there is enough deck area for the solar panels needed to create power.

Buyers can choose as many as six staterooms, each en suite with stall showers and nearly king-size berths. The salon also uses that beam well, providing bowling-alley space under 7-foot-6-inch headroom. With the Silent 60, the interior is basically a blank sheet, allowing buyers to tailor the layout to their cruising needs.

Silent-Yachts 60

As for the engine rooms, NASA could take a page from Silent-Yachts: Everything is precisely labeled, placed for easy access and surgery-suite spotless. Externally, the Silent 60 is striking, with reversed bows and black graphic slashes on the topside that conceal dark-tinted windows (which provide bright, airy interiors to the staterooms). What catches the eye most, however, are the 42 solar panels that cover every inch of the cabin top as well as the hardtop over the flybridge. Produced by SunPower in California, these panels feed power to a lithium battery pack reportedly good for 3,000 charge cycles—or an estimated 35 years of normal boating use.

The Silent 60 I got aboard, which was Hull No. 3, had a four-stateroom layout. A larger stateroom forward in the starboard hull served as the master, with an athwartships berth, settee and built-in vanity. This yacht also had a walk-through Dutch door forward in the salon next to the helm, leading to settees on the foredeck as well as providing salon ventilation. Another benefit of the door for short-handed cruisers is quick access to the anchor gear under the foredeck.

Owners can sacrifice the forward door in favor of a forward master stateroom with a king berth just a couple of steps below the salon and an en suite head in the starboard hull. An intriguing design feature is the two outward-facing “window seats” indented into the stateroom on each side deck, which would make a wonderful spot at anchor with a good book.

The salon has a fixed dining table that easily seats eight people on the wraparound settee. There also are loose chairs and a pad just forward for lounging. The helm is raised one step and has twin Simrad multifunction displays plus the Silent systems monitor, all easily understood.

Silent-Yachts 60

Aft and to port, the U-shaped galley has a dishwasher as well as a full-height fridge to starboard. The fridge setup may change to a pair of undercounter drawer fridges on future boats for easier access and to eliminate a blind spot for the skipper.

Abaft the galley, a window slides open for easy pass-through to the cockpit to serve whatever the cooks have prepared using the Hafele four-burner, two-zone cooktop.

The Silent 60 is a work in progress, and additional changes might be on the way, such as the addition of twin berths that slide together, and a different location for what is now the midsalon washer-dryer (in a console abaft the helm). This hull was built in Thailand, but production is moving to Italy.

Still, the yacht has exceedingly clever design ideas, such as the hinged hardtop on the bridge. The top lowers electrically to seal off the bridge from the weather as well as keep the solar cells from being shadowed. The bridge itself is conventional, with a double-wide helm seat to port that reverses to create wraparound seating for the dining table, and double lounge pads for relaxing, not sunning, since the solar panels take up every bit of sun space.

Silent-Yachts 60

The cockpit has a settee and an L-shaped table. A hydraulic swim platform is available in varying widths to handle up to a 13-foot tender without impinging on the platforms on either hull. Silent-Yachts also gets points for good walk-around decks protected by toe kicks as well as welded stainless-steel rails.

The Silent 60 is on the leading edge of a greener yachting experience. For cruisers who are looking to lessen their carbon footprint while enjoying some quietude at sea, this yacht is worth serious consideration.

Built for Safety

Future Silent 60s from Italy will have fully resin-infused fiberglass sandwich construction with carbon reinforcements in high-stress areas. Each of the hulls has watertight bulkheads, sealed floors and three collision compartments for enhanced safety. The foam sandwich core provides thermal and sound insulation.

Kite Sailing

One option available on the Silent 60 is a kite-wing propulsion system using a collapsing mast and hidden winch to fly a 140-square-foot sail. (By comparison, a Laser sail is 76 square feet.) With open ocean breezes of 17 to 21 knots, the builder says the kite can power the Silent 60 at 6 to 7 knots alone, or it can bump the speed with motors to go faster than the usual 8-knot cruise speed.

Big Sisters

In addition to the Silent-Yachts 60, the boatbuilder has 62-, 80- and 120-foot electric power cats available for owners looking for something bigger. Additionally, it recently started work on the hybrid-powered Silent VisionF 82.

Garcia is fearless in its path; its distinctive aluminium cruising yachts have gained a strong reputation over the past 50 years. The latest model, the Garcia 60 Exploration , is a shoal-draught expedition yacht that will take you anywhere around the globe. As I discovered, sailing in more confined waters, she is also responsive and incredibly fun.

“Nowhere you can’t go” is the philosophy of the French shipyard Garcia. Jean Pierre and Jean Louis Garcia in 1974 founded the brand for bluewater aluminium yachts. In 2011 the new Exploration yacht was the result and influence of a long-distance navigator Jimmy Cornell and the passion of the Garcia team.

Jimmy Cornell , Yachtsman and bestselling author of World Cruising Routes , said, “I was looking for a sailing boat adapted to my trips that combined sailing at high latitudes and in the tropics, but was unable to find a solution on the market. I decided to design a new boat that would come close to being the perfect cruising sailboat. I was immediately very enthusiastic; they were the best builders of aluminium yachts in France, and they had with them one of the greatest naval architects Olivier Racoupeau. Without a doupt they were going to build the boat of my dreams.”

Discovering the Garcia 60 Exploration

It’s mid-March, and a few storms have hit France, so when Grand Large Yachting invited us to test the Garcia Exploration 60 , we were excited; it’s not often you get to try a sailboat in moderate wind.

We arrived bright and early in Cherbourg, France, jumping at the gate to climb aboard and get underway. What struck me first was the size of this aluminium beast; she’s 19.5 meters long by 5.4m in the beam , an absolute monster and by far the most significant sailboat I have tested to date.

I spent some time with the skipper familiarising myself with the technical workings of this Garcia 60 Exploration before we set off; it is something I like to do on all sailboats. It’s an excellent task, but Garcia has made this easy with its intelligent systems and ergonomic cockpit design.

All systems can be operated from both port and starboard helm pedestals. The central hydraulic servo system runs your forward sails fullers, windlass, centre board, genset, and vang. Time to go; we expect winds from the southeast between 15-20kn gusting to 28kn, so a good breeze to get this 33T lady moving. Manoeuvring out of a marina with twin rudders is not my favourite sport. Still, with the bow and stern thrusters, my five-year-old would make it look easy. If you’re worried, The aluminium hull is 5 to 12 mm thick. It is charitably dimensioned right down to its ribs and stringers, assuring foolproof impact resistance. For even more peace of mind, the structure includes a watertight bulkhead at the front and the rear, upstream of the steering system. A fin protects the shaft. The rudders are made of aluminium and preceded by a protective skeg; They also have a composite sacrificial zone in their upper part. In case of a violent shock, if the rudder stock should bend, the hull is protected, and the rudder remains functional. you don’t pierce your hull if you hit anything, don’t forget this is a first-class blue water sailboat, after all.

GARCIA EXPLORATION 60_HD_5

I appreciate with a potential shallow draft of 1.50 m; shallow anchorages stay accessible to such a sailboat. Moving away from tourist areas and choosing less frequented zones is possible. Going up rivers or rias is also likely. And most explorers will also be able to adventure into areas that still need to be appropriately mapped. It is reassuring the possibility of being able to reach shelter zones. With its modern and stable hull – designed by “ Olivier Racoupeau ” – and its generous sail plan, the Exploration 60 has high average speeds that shorten distances. The centring of the weights (chain wells at the foot of the mast, centred tanks) limits the Boat’s pitching and supports its seaworthiness and sailing comfort. Sailing downwind with the centreboard up, speeding up on the wave remains safe, and the movements are smoother without any hooking effect. Similarly, I expect the Boat to move freely between the waves in extreme sea conditions, less exposed to their power, but I have yet to find out.

While we are on the subject of stability, The Garcia 60 Exploration holds up to 800 litres of fresh water and 2,200 litres of diesel, and all the tanks are fixed centrally in the hull. You add 450KG of Anker chain by the mast and spare parts and copious amounts of stowage; all the technical equipment is grouped in a dedicated area, a properly Soundproofed engine room, easily accessible for maintenance and any repairs. This provides comfort for those living aboard.

The Garcia 60 Exploration also has an actual workshop. The tools and spare parts storage area is spacious enough to work in and care for the Boat. With its many interior storage spaces, large sail compartments and voluminous exterior storage spaces, the Exploration 60 has an exceptional carrying capacity of 4 tons. Water sports equipment such as paddle boards and scuba tanks can be taken on board for leisure or exploration.

Below decks

As she settled into her rhythm, it was time for a well-earned cup of tea and a little poke around below decks to see what this lady had to offer.

DETAILS INTRUMENTS GARCIA 60

Moving forward, I found my spot for passage-making. In the raised salon (port side), you will find one of the USPs of Garcia, The chart table; it is like a wheelhouse, with all your instruments and engine controls. I have a 270° view here looking straight out the Double glazed windows. Whatever the weather conditions, the boat can be piloted from the inside, and the inverted shape of the roof prevents reflections. I can feel myself daydreaming about all the possible places we could adventure with this sailboat. I have never liked the cold, but imagining the look on my daughter’s face seeing an iceberg for the first time makes me smile and think of the possibilities and destinations.

CARRE VUE

This full-width cabin can be set for two classic cabins or a double cabin and a technical area. You can customise this area as much as you like, but I would like it like this. There is more storage than you need, and every drawer has a sea bar lock so that nothing will open by itself. This owner had asked for an on-sweat head fitted to the starboard side of their cabin with a separate rain head shower. The volume of the boat is impressive, with a minimum under-ceiling height of 2 m everywhere. With portholes more than 40 cm high around the roof, light is everywhere inside the Exploration 60. The materials are chosen with taste and assembled with care.

CABINE 2 VUE 1 GARCIA 60

Below the saloon, a double cabin can complete the sleeping space for guests or be reserved for a crew member. The owner can thus accommodate a skipper or a crew member to accompany them on their voyages.

Time to get some sea air again

COCKPIT VUE 1 GARCIA 60

The cockpit is protected by the elegant hard-top that runs far aft, which is my second favourite spot on this boat; as it started to rain, I can tell you it was out of the weather, but you feel part of the action, especially as once again you have a dedicated area to starboard with all your instruments so keeping watch hear will be a dream for most sailors like me.

Our cockpit area was fitted with side covers for added protection and insulation, making it feel more cosey; It is an additional living space, a natural second saloon, with a neat design, accessible by only three steps from the interior space. All too soon, it was time to gybe and head back to port. I feel robbed as we change course; this boat invites you to daydream about what might be possible on your adventures through life and unlimited destinations.

Garcia 60 Exploration: in Conclusion

This is a boat-borne of considerable experience and attention to detail , taking a proven concept and refining it to a new level . There are many small but clever touches that may take time to be noticeable but make a difference to life on board. So it offers a big step forward compared to the other blue water sailboats on the market. In particular, the more significant owner’s cabin makes living on board for extended periods more civilised. At the same time, the more oversized cockpit will work just as well in the tropics as at high latitudes. It’s a supremely capable yacht with long legs that effortlessly puts in good daily mileage when crossing oceans. Yet, it will also be fun to sail in your home waters. However, what’s unique is the combination of Garcia’s Four signature features:

  • Rugged aluminium construction.
  • Shoal draught with the ability to dry out.
  • The protection offered by the cockpit area.
  • Compleat autonomy on Expeditions

This latest edition to the Garcia fleet is a credit to their passion and expertise in building ultimate explorer sailboats. I am sure other shipyards will watch Garcia closely and adapt their sailboats to catch up.

This boat has left me wanting to sell everything I own, pack my family on board and see where this magnificent blue water sailboat will take us.

Having read closely this article written by a sailor with passion I am in a dream like state. This wonderful yacht is just that, a floating home to claim ones wander lust. This is undoubtedly the finest yacht to fulfil those aspirations. I concur with the writer. Sell up and explore the world. One has one life , just do it. .

Thank you, Mike; I am glad you enjoyed the article. Yes, the Garcia 60 is a real game changer; if it were within budget, we would be planning our world expedition. We feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to review this magnificent sailboat.

Great boat great article. Some errors in the copy possibly due to language not fully translating. I can find nothing regarding the power source. Is it a gen set powering electric drivetrain. Is it a normal engine driven prop. Does it regen using the prop to generate electricity to replenish battery banks? Where exactly is the laundry room?

Great review of an amazing boat – this ticks so many boxes for remote exploration and diving trips, both tropical and high latitude. Thanks!

Best Sailboats Over 60 Feet

Best Sailboats Over 60 Feet

In recent years, sailboats and yachts 60 feet have become very popular. This development is mainly due to the demand for comfort among boat enthusiasts and boaters. Advancement in technology has made it easier for simple boat users to handle large-sized boats without a boat crew’s help. Innovations such as bow thrusters help with mooring, and improvement in deck-gear technology has made sailing less difficult.

It is no gainsaying that, to a great extent, larger boats are more comfortable; there is more space for more luxurious rooms and amenities. If it were a car, we’d say, “there’s more legroom.”

Below, we have described the best bluewater sailboats that are above 60 feet. If you love large boats and are looking to buy one, it is hoped that this list will inform your purchase and help you to know what to look out for as you make your purchase.

The Swan 65 is another boat on our list that was designed by the legendary German Frers. There are not many boats, cruisers, or yachts with woodwork like this one. Its finishing is done with quality European Oak.

The Swan 65 comes with two types of interior, thanks to the creative genius of the interior designer, Heini Gustafsson. These two models are Owner Forward and Owner Aft. The only difference between these two models is the layout and placement of materials such as furniture; the purpose of the difference being flexibility and fluidity.

The deck of this boat is designed with straight elegant parallel lines. The spaces between the lines are all of the same brownish color but different shades. The Swan’s 65’s cockpit possesses five winches stationed close to two helm stations; it can house a small racing team without qualms. If you need a flexible, versatile boat, the Nautor’s Swan 65 is the way to go.

The well-balanced hull shaped is also partially responsible for this feature. Other quality technological equipment that make this Amel peculiar are a lithium service battery, electric winches, carbon gangway, autopilot, and other navigation electronics.

Inside the Amel 60 is a huge owner suite and two luxurious guest cabins. The boat has watertight collision bulkheads that make it very difficult for it to drown in any situation. Its cockpit is well covered so that the steering station is protected and the vessel can continue moving in adverse weather conditions. Bavaria C65

The Bavaria C65 is the biggest yachts that have ever been built by the Bavaria yacht brand. Somewhat like the Swan 64, the Bavaria C5 has a myriad of interior layout options that buyers and intending buyers can choose from.

This yacht is quite fast and can be used to race. It can also be used as a blue water cruiser. The hull of this magnificent yacht has really nice windows that complement its shape. These windows are also instrumental in providing natural light for the interior of the boat. What’s more? It possesses a large bathroom that also happens to be a dinghy garage. This encourages activities such as sunbathing.

No doubt, the interior of the Bavaria C65 is everything to write home about. Its owner’s cabin is pretty grand, just as its salon and even its pantry. The yacht displays another level of luxury. It eschews features that are quite modern as it was constructed in 2018.

This boat was designed by Bill Dixon in conjunction with Roel de Groot. In its construction, nothing was spared in trying to make the Moody 64 a masterpiece, just as it turned out. Its hull is made chiefly of fiberglass, cored and mixed with a host of other materials to make it even stronger.

The cockpit of this Moody 64 is divided between a somewhat higher position aft and the more spacious main cockpit area that can house about six people. This main area enables better control of the boat and contains most of the steering electronics. However, the higher station offers a better view of the water.

Designed by Roel de Groot, the interior of the Moddy 64 looks quite alluring and, at the same time, manages to look a tad utilitarian. There are stairs all around for movement from one station to another. The salon has a dinette that is C-shaped, designed to create ample space for other activities that go on in the room. Also, this boat provides plenty of natural light through windows, portlights, and hatches.

What’s more? Apart from the dinette, the Moody 64 has a U-shaped galley that possesses ample space for many kinds of culinary activities and equipment. It is worthy to note that this boat comes equipped with different kinds of machinery to make life aboard more comfortable. If you need a boat that is functional but with a perfect blend of pleasure, you will not find many that are better than the Moody 64.

When the US targeted Russia’s oligarchs after the invasion of Ukraine, the trail of assets kept leading to our own backyard. Not only had our nation become a haven for shady foreign money, but we were also incubating a familiar class of yacht-owning, industry-dominating, resource-extracting billionaires. In the  January + February 2024  issue of our magazine, we investigate the rise of American Oligarchy—and what it means for the rest of us. You can read all the pieces  here .

The luxury yacht may be the world’s most exclusive form of transportation. But there are only a hundred-some that meet the definition of a gigayacht—a pleasure craft 295 feet or longer. Their opaque ownership records offer a glimpse of modern wealth and power: Over two dozen are linked to Gulf royals, businessmen, or states, and 20 to citizens (past or current) of the former Soviet Union. At least 23 have reportedly belonged to Americans, including founders of Microsoft, Netscape, Amazon, WhatsApp, and Snapchat. The widow of a German retailer who thrived under Hitler owned one; a UK tax exile and a Formula 1 dad still do. Yugoslav strongman Tito’s old yacht makes the list; Dominican dictator Trujillo’s does too. Take a cruise through the history of the vessels and their—somewhat—more modest sister ships.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to charter in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Baltimore begins massive and dangerous cleanup after bridge collapse

Huge crane ships, thousands of relief workers and millions of dollars headed toward Baltimore on Thursday, as efforts turned from recovery after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge to a massive cleanup that some experts described as unprecedented and highly dangerous.

The U.S. Navy deployed several floating cranes, including one that could lift 1,000 tons, while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it would send more than 1,100 engineering specialists and other experts to begin removing the hulking debris that has crippled the Port of Baltimore .

Federal officials also announced the first relief funds — $60 million sought by Maryland officials — would flow toward disaster recovery just hours after the request was submitted.

Top officials with the Corps, which is leading the effort to clear the Patapsco River, described a three step effort to get one of the nation’s largest shipping hubs back online. They are racing to stem the rippling economic fallout from a cargo ship striking the bridge on Tuesday.

Teams would first try to clear the shipping channel of the massive steel trusses that block it to allow one-way traffic to begin flowing again into and out of the port. Second, they would lift pieces of the bridge draped across the 985-foot Dali and move it. Finally, they would dredge up concrete and steel that have settled on the river bed.

Officials have yet to offer a timeline for how long that process will take, but infrastructure and salvage experts said the cleanup would pose a monumental challenge that includes frigid waters for divers having to cut steel beams and the 764 tons of hazardous materials that remain onboard the Dali.

Peter Ford, founder of SkyRock Advisors which provides consulting on infrastructure projects and is a former Merchant Marine, compared the operation to freeing a container ship that became stuck in the Suez Canal in 2021, but perhaps more complex.

“This will be highly technical, very difficult and frankly dangerous,” Ford said. “This size of vessel. This size of bridge. All of the span coming down entirely and some of it still on top of a vessel is a situation that I have never read about in my career.”

Federal officials have not described in detail how they plan to carry out the cleanup mission, but Ford said he thought they would begin by using sonar and other tools to map out where debris lies on the floor of the Patapsco River, which is about 50 feet deep.

He said they would hack the debris above and below the surface into pieces, which would in some instances require divers. The barge- or boat-based cranes would then lift the pieces onto barges floating nearby. He said cutting the steel could be particularly dangerous because beams might shift or fall. In some instances, he said workers might be forced to build platforms to support the beams as they are cut.

He said teams would probably have to go below deck on the Dali to ensure it is seaworthy, before attempting to tow it to port. Finally, he said they would probably use scoops to dredge up materials from the riverbed.

James Bell, president of ADCO Environmental Services — a Chicago-based company that does hazardous material cleanups — said one of the complicating factors of the cleanup are 56 shipping containers that contain hazardous materials, some of which have broken open. The hazardous materials include corrosive and flammable liquids, as well as lithium-ion batteries.

National Transportation Safety Board officials said Wednesday they noticed a sheen on the surface of the Patapsco and teams deployed floating booms to corral any leaks.

“The hazmat crew always goes in after the emergency responders,” Bell said. “You have to remove the hazards, so that when you bring your new workers in to start removing the bridge, they’re not in harm’s way.”

Bell said the flammable and corrosive liquids are unlikely to leak, since they’re packaged inside steel drums or industrial “totes” designed to safely transport chemicals.

“While the [shipping] containers may be damaged from the bridge falling on them, those [drums and totes] are extremely strong and they can hold up very well,” Bell said. “Those lithium-ion batteries probably present the biggest danger of all, because once they ignite they are not easily extinguished.”

Some experts said as herculean as the cleanup sounds, it might have been even harder. Stephen Frailey, a partner at the Pacific Maritime Group that performs salvage operations, said Baltimore dodged a worst-case scenario.

“We are lucky in that the hull seems to be intact. It doesn’t seem to be leaking water. It doesn’t seem to be leaking fuel,” Frailey said. “It also seems to be stable so it’s not going to capsize.”

Both Ford and Frailey predicted it would take months to fully clear the debris in the river.

Maryland transportation officials had asked for $60 million in federal emergency relief funds on Thursday morning and Gov. Wes Moore (D) had earlier declared a state of emergency, making Maryland eligible for quick access to hundreds of millions of dollars in aid. Within hours federal officials approved the aid from U.S. Department of Transportation’s emergency relief fund.

Federal agencies, including the Army Corps of Engineers, will assume the full cost of clearing shipping lanes in the Patapsco River, said Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.).

Money from the emergency relief fund will cover Maryland’s costs to divert traffic away from the collapsed portion of I-695, the major thruway that used the Key Bridge, and for the design and rebuild of a new structure, Van Hollen said.

Policymakers have already begun discussing raising the height of a new bridge, he said, and incorporating new technology to make the next structure safer.

Emergency relief funds will cover the vast majority of a rebuilding project, Van Hollen said, but not the total amount. He and other members of the Maryland congressional delegation are planning to introduce legislation for more federal dollars to cover that shortfall.

President Biden said earlier in the week that federal government should pay for the full amount to restore the waterway and erect a new bridge.

“When it comes to using those funds for the design and ultimately the construction of new bridge, there’s a cost share where the federal government picks up the lion’s share of the costs, but not all of it,” Van Hollen said. “And that’s where Senator [Ben] Cardin and I plan to introduce legislation to ensure that the federal government is able to pick up the full costs going forward.”

Congressional spending for Maryland, though, could take months to pass, even if things flow smoothly on Capitol Hill.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg convened a meeting of port, labor and industry officials Thursday to discuss how to mitigate supply chain disruptions stemming from the partial shutdown of the Port of Baltimore.

A solemn moment of remembrance occurred Thursday for the six construction workers who were killed in the bridge collapse. At Opening Day for the Baltimore Orioles , fans were asked to stand at Camden Yards shortly before 3 p.m., after all the players had been introduced and both teams stood on the baselines.

A replica Fort McHenry flag was unfurled in center field to a lengthy roar. Orioles broadcaster Kevin Brown then asked fans to remove their hats and observe a moment of silence for the victims of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Maryland Transportation Authority Officers who helped stop traffic on the bridge before the collapse were also honored.

Nicolas Rivero, Danny Nguyen and Scott Dance contributed to this report.

The luxury yacht, or LY for short, was designed to “feel like a hideout in the middle of the sea,” according to Lexus. The exterior reflects the automaker’s “L-finesse” design philosophy, with curvy, head-turning lines and a sharp bow creating a sporty profile.

Lexus LY680 Luxury Yacht

The interior centers around a “comfortable living space,” Lexus says. With a beam of nearly 19 feet, the yacht offers a decent amount of space onboard, too. The nameplate didn’t divulge many details regarding decor, but Italian design powerhouse Nuvolari Lenard spearheaded the interior design of the 650. In terms of layout, the 680 is equipped with three cabins on the lower deck and a light-filled salon, galley, and helm station on the main deck.

The exterior is bigger—and perhaps better—than that of the 650. The flybridge has been extended by about 4.5 feet and adorned with a plush lounge and grill. The aft swim platform has also been lengthened by roughly 2.3 feet.

In terms of performance, the 680 will be powered by a pair of 12.8-liter turbocharged Volvo D13 engines capable of delivering 1,350 hp each to IPS drives. (The yacht can also be equipped with slightly less powerful 1,050 hp engines.) The 650 sported the same propulsion system and could reach 33.5 knots at full tilt.

Baltimore Key Bridge collapse live updates: Largest crane on Eastern Seaboard to help clear channel

The cargo ship struck Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday.

A cargo ship crashed into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, causing a near-total collapse of the span and halting vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore.

Six construction workers are believed to have fallen from the collapsing bridge into the frigid waters of the Patapsco River below. The bodies of two of the victims have been recovered so far, while four remain missing and are presumed dead, officials said.

What to know about the collapse

The container ship Dali struck Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, partially collapsing the bridge , officials in Maryland said.

A local pilot was at the helm of the ship at the time, Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said.

The crash appeared to be accidental , not intentional, officials said.

Two construction workers were rescued and six went missing in the immediate aftermath of the collapse, officials said. The bodies of two of the victims were recovered from the water on Wednesday amid ongoing search and recovery efforts, while four remain missing and are presumed dead, officials said.

The Chesapeake 1000 crane -- capable of lifting roughly 2.2 million pounds at a time -- arrived at the bridge at 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the bridge response Unified Command.

The piece of steel on the bow of the ship weighs roughly 9 million pounds.

Engineers will need to figure out exactly how and where to cut the steel to ensure no further danger will be posed to construction crews or the ship, the Unified Command said. Once the engineers determine where and how to cut the steel, they will begin to remove it from the ship in multiple pieces, the Unified Command said.

At least one large vehicle is still submerged under the murky Patapsco River, the Secretary of the Maryland State Police, Col. Roland L. Butler, Jr., said Thursday night.

Officials said they believe the vehicle belonged to the crew that was working on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

Pieces of the bridge, concrete and rebar also are in the water, Butler said.

“It's going to take some time to get to that and it's going to take some time to do carefully, and then to shore that up before we can put an end to recovering whatever's in that vehicle,” Butler said.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott told reporters Thursday night he remains hopeful that the four victims who are still missing will be recovered.

“We remain hopeful that in the course of this salvage work, we are able to recover those who remain missing and bring them home,” Scott said.

Cranes en route to Baltimore to help clear channel: Governor

Cranes are en route to Baltimore to help clear the bridge debris from the channel, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said during a press briefing Thursday.

The wreckage needs to be cleared to help advance recovery efforts, after diving operations were suspended Wednesday night due to "security concerns," as well as to reopen the channel and ultimately rebuild the bridge, Moore said.

The U.S. Navy will be providing three cranes, according to a Navy spokesperson. Among them, the "largest crane in the Eastern Seaboard" should be arriving later Thursday evening, Moore said.

"This is an incredibly complex job, and our timeline will be long," Moore said. "We've got work to do, but we're moving."

Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath with the U.S. Coast Guard said assessments are underway to determine how to break down the bridge into the "right-size pieces" so that a crane can lift them.

"Our number one priority is to reopen the Port of Baltimore as fast as we can [and] do it safely," he said.

Biden administration approves $60 million for bridge costs

The Biden administration approved $60 million in emergency relief funds for rebuilding the bridge hours after the receiving the request from the state of Maryland, the White House said Thursday evening.

"The federal emergency funds we're releasing today will help Maryland begin urgent work, to be followed by further resources as recovery and rebuilding efforts progress," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement. "President Biden has been clear: the federal government will do everything it takes to help rebuild the bridge and get the Port of Baltimore back open."

Biden briefed on collapse

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the ongoing search and rescue efforts, according to a White House official. He will continue to receive updates from his team throughout the day, the official said.

White House ‘closely monitoring’ Baltimore bridge collapse

Senior White House officials have been in touch with the Maryland governor and Baltimore mayor to offer any federal assistance they need, the administration said.

Bodies of 3 Rohingya refugees are found dead as Indonesia ends rescue for capsized boat

CALANG, Indonesia (AP) — The bodies of three Rohingya refugees were found in the sea as the Indonesian authorities ended a search for survivors from a boat that capsized near Aceh province, the provincial search and rescue agency said Sunday.

Fishers and a search and rescue team rescued 75 people from the boat on Thursday — 44 men, 22 women and nine children — after they huddled on its overturned hull throughout the night.

A few were taken to a local hospital for treatment, but most were sent to a temporary shelter in the Aceh Barat district. Several told UNHCR workers they had lost family members on the journey.

Fishers first spotted the three bodies and reported them to local authorities on Saturday.

“After we searched the area, the team found three bodies, two adult women and one boy. They are allegedly Rohingya refugees who were the passengers of the capsized and sunken boat,” Al Hussain, chief of Banda Aceh Search and Rescue Agency in a statement on Sunday.

The bodies were immediately taken to the hospital in Calang city in Aceh Jaya district, before local authorities buried them.

Faisal Rahman, a UNHCR staff member in Aceh, said that some of the survivors also helped to identify the bodies.

“We have verified as we take one of the refugees to identify and verify that they were together on the boat,” Faisal Rahman, a UNHCR staff member in Aceh, said Saturday evening.

Local authorities in Aceh have received several reports about dead bodies floating in nearby waters since Saturday.

U.N. agencies in a statement on Friday said that about 70 Rohingya refugees are feared missing or dead from a boat that made a grueling sea voyage from Bangladesh and sank off Indonesia’s coast this week.

About 1 million of the predominately Muslim Rohingya live in Bangladesh as refugees from Myanmar. They include about 740,000 who fled in 2017 to escape a brutal counterinsurgency campaign by Myanmar’s security forces, who were accused of committing mass rapes and killings and burning thousands of homes. The Rohingya minority in Myanmar faces widespread discrimination and most are denied citizenship.

Indonesia, like Thailand and Malaysia, is not a signatory to the United Nations’ 1951 Refugee Convention, and so is not obligated to accept them. However, the country generally provides temporary shelter to refugees in distress.
