We loved everything about Xenia: The boat design, the comfortable cabins, the sailing, the lovely beaches & above all, Garreth & Kristine's attention & friendliness. Every moment was perfect, the food was wonderful, words cannot describe this magical week. We will be there again next May and it is our intention to repeat the cruise on December 2015. This was the best of our eight catamaran trips. Best Regards, Fernando, Marcia, Antonio, Irma, Marcio, Claudia, Luiz & Lucia.

Being boaters & loving the water, we dreamed of a caribbean adventure in the British Virgin Islands to celebrate our beloved husband & fathers 70th Birthday. Our dreams came true on the sleek, elegant, relaxed and secure Xenia catamaran. We expected a great trip but they both went above & beyond, even taking underwater pictures of the family with colorful sea life making our experience a Magical Trip of a Lifetime. Thank you, Champ, Peggy Sue, Casey, Christine, Gary, Juliet, & Emily

Really, there are no words to describe how amazing this vacation was. One of our very best ones ever! You made us feel like friends, not just guests & crew. In that spirit we INSIST that you visit us in California so we can wine & dine you and take you fishing on our boat! There is a yellow fin Tuna or Dorado with your name on it! We can't wait to come back in March/April with the family and make even more incredible memories. Kent & Lisa.

Gareth & Kristine, Where do we begin! This was our dream two years ago & we actually experienced it. You both made it fabulous! Words can't describe the awesome experience we had! Keep up the good work and we also hope to see you again on board! Barbara and Brad.

To Gareth, Kristine and Julienne, Thank you all for a fantastic week! Every minute was perfect and exactly what we needed. We are going home with bi smiles, well rested and huge tummies. Best of luck to all of you, happy holidays and hope to see you again soon. Paul, Jan & Jerrianne.

Gareth, Kristine, Susie & Julienne,  Thank you all so much for an absolutely wonderful week. The food was AMAZING & the hospitality so welcoming. Thank you for putting up with our antics, our very large appetites & late night dance parties. This has been the best way to ring in the New Year & we are all leaving feeling rejuvenated & maybe just a few pounds heavier! 🙂 Thank you for everything! Happiest of New Years! Ken, Matthew, Max, Bo, Julia, Walker Cynthia & Lauren.

This charter was far and away above our expectations. Gareth and Christine were absolutely fantastic in every way. Gareth was a great captain and made us feel safe and comfortable at all times. Christine created a culinary experience that is impossible to put into words (mostly because my mouth was always full!). The yacht was clean and felt like it was brand new. I highly recommend the Xenia 74 to anyone.

Privilege 745 Series (2010) – Xenia

One of the very last units built by the shipyard ALLIAURA MARINE, in owner´s version with a large central Master cabin with private bathroom including a bathtub, shower and dual glass sink. A lot of space for this central master suite with desk area, and full storage, but also 3 other spacious double VIP cabins and the crew quarters on the front starboard hull.

The salon is superb, offering a large friendly salon, a fully equipped bar space and a spacious dining area for 8 persons. The finest glossy cherry carpentry contrasts with elegance with the white ceiling and leathers, and the finishing’s are as usually superb, with glass, st/steel. The galley down in starboard hull is spacious and fully equipped, and will definitively full fill the Chefs expectations.

As far as equipment is concerned, all is complete : tropical A/C, 2 generators, water maker, TV in call cabins, telescopic crane for the tender, all hotel staff and crockery. She is equipped for top class Luxury Charter program in the Caribbean, and receives every year a full end of season refit for being available again for a new challenge. The current owner has invested a lot in a major refit in 2015, including the hull paint for an ultimate result.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

  • No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

  • Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
  • Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
  • Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

coral ocean yacht high angle view

Inside the multimillion-euro refit of legendary 73m Lürssen Coral Ocean

Aesthetically untouched for a quarter of a century, the legendary Coral Ocean needed a particularly sensitive refit. Andrew Johansson admires the results...

"The only thing I really regret is getting off the boat. I really hate it – it’s crazy,” says businessman and serial yacht owner Ian Malouf, who took on what he believes to be the biggest self-managed rebuild to date. Taking on a yacht with such heritage and historical significance, ripping out its original Jon Bannenberg interior and building something new takes character, vision and a lot of guts.

Coral Ocean is a significant superyacht, one of the largest at launch and, despite (or perhaps because of) her secrecy for the first two decades of her life, an icon that marked a new era in yachting, especially for German shipyard Lürssen . As a result, when the Australian entrepreneur acquired her in 2019 with the intent to do a significant refit, whispered question marks over her future inevitably arose.

Malouf surprised himself when he decided to buy her. “The last thing I thought I would do is buy a boat of that age and it is a credit to Lürssen [that I did] really,” says the CEO of digital charter platform Ahoy Club. “We were looking at another larger boat and one of the guys from Lürssen – on hearing what I liked and was looking for – suggested that I look at Coral Ocean , which at the time was anchored just outside of Monaco. So we did,” Malouf says. “On the tender to the boat, I thought ‘Wow, I’m going to buy this boat.’ It was a bit of a like at first sight. It all unfolded very quickly after that.”

The visit he made with his wife and daughter only reinforced the strong emotion he felt before stepping on board. He recognised what had been achieved at the time of the yacht’s delivery in 1994 – she was a yacht of many firsts and a trendsetter at the time, with an original layout, folding balconies and a superb wellness area, for instance – and although he appreciated many of the spaces within the layout, he could also see new potential beyond the original tribal-inspired interior.

“Her history has instilled some good feelings. I think it was quite a fun boat for many years,  and there is nothing wrong with that,” says Malouf with a chuckle.

He left Monaco on the yacht in October 2019 with his family to get better acquainted with the latest addition to their fleet. They spent a week on board, pulling panels off, brainstorming what should be changed and exploring where the work could be done before deciding on the Spanish STP Shipyard in Palma de Mallorca.

“Initially, we thought the project was too big to be self-managed at STP and that we wouldn’t be able to do a €6 million [£5.2m] project. In the end, we landed up there and did a €35 million project instead,” says build captain Will Kaye, who also manages Malouf’s European yacht fleet. A rebuild project of such magnitude would be a significant undertaking for any organisation.

When he returned to Australia, Malouf entrusted Captain Kaye to manage the project. “The biggest challenge at the beginning was to find enough subcontractors able to take on a project of this size. We had well over 100 contractors – nearly 200 when you include all the small ones – all working on the vessel,” Kaye recalls. “If we were a full-service shipyard, they would all be vying for our business, which would have given us quite a bit of sway to enforce deadlines. Holding individual contractors to their timelines and getting  them all to integrate into the larger timescale  was the biggest challenge.”

With the assistance of H2 Yacht Design , Malouf set out an ambitious plan that would see two and a half levels of the upper deck gutted and rebuilt, which added approximately 150GT to the yacht’s volume. The owner’s suite sits on the new owner’s deck with skylights that flood the space with natural light in combination with new, wider windows that offer 180-degree panoramic views.

Four spacious guest cabins are on the lower deck where a new full-beam VIP suite compares favourably with the owner’s cabin in terms of size and comfort. Adjoining this VIP cabin is a private lounge, which can be used as a cinema, coffee area and office. “All the cabins are really generous, but the VIP cabin probably rivals most of the master cabins on any other boat,” Malouf says.

Other significant changes include the removal of the original coral and blue mosaic-lined plunge pool and the addition of a new glass-bottom spa pool on the sundeck. Framed by a glass balustrade, the sundeck is an inviting setting, and the new pool and sunbeds are steps away from the fully stocked bar in the new upper saloon. To provide flexibility and enhance the enjoyment of the space, the refit gave the upper saloon floor-to-ceiling retractable glass windows, providing an indoor-outdoor experience.

“Ian had a very clear idea about what he wanted to do, but as with every refit, there are many things to consider when radically changing the layout of an existing yacht,” explains James Bermudez, design director at H2 Yacht Design. “The boat was well known for its deep central pool, so we toyed with the idea of how we could incorporate this into a new scheme. We decided to remove it but kept the pool’s location on the sundeck, so that the stairs and existing structure could be retained.” The aft deck areas were also important, as the boat had to accommodate large group events. Outside catering requirements needed careful consideration.”

Producing a wow factor in terms of design and layout is only one part of a successful charter yacht. The other half of the equation falls to the crew and quality of service. Malouf considers himself to be easy-going but when it comes to service, there is no doubt about his expectations, on or off charter. Service was a key driver that led to the addition of dedicated storage, such as cabinets recessed within the fashion plate for glasses on the upper saloon, and workstations such as pantries, which were created without significantly taking away from guest areas. “All of this was thought of right from the beginning,” Kaye says. “Having enough space as a crew to operate properly was all considered.”

“It was a good learning experience and it also meant that we could do what we wanted without being tied to certain parameters,” Malouf says, reflecting on the success of the project. “There were some things we changed as we went – the upper saloon was going to be a gymnasium and thank God we did change [this plan], because now it is one of the most awesome places on the boat.”

Kaye says this was one of the most significant change orders during the project and it required quick alterations; design and build had to happen simultaneously to keep up with the timeline. Now, the sundeck is home to an upper saloon that is double the size of what the gym would have been and is a key attraction on board.  It features a new carbon-fibre roof and sympathetic styling cues on the exterior to ensure the modifications look original and in keeping with the overall design.

From very large details to minute ones, no expense was spared and with a €790,000-a-week fee for charter, details make a big difference.  For instance, the teak decking was replaced with 120-millimetre-wide planks and white carpet was installed on the interior to ensure superior comfort underfoot. “People expect a lot and so they are getting a lot on this. Normally, as soon as you buy a boat, you start to think about what you’ll do to the next one, but I’m not thinking like that at the moment,” Malouf says.

“I don’t feel like anything is missing. The other day, we had a fantastic time in the lounge near the formal dining area where the whole side of the boat opens out. Even the boat deck is fun to hang out on because it completely opens up. Looking at the year this boat was built and the spaces that it has, it is amazing. When people see the door that opens out to the side of the boat, they say ‘Wow, is that new?’ but, of course, it was there before, and Jon Bannenberg put that in boats way back then. That is what made  this boat so ahead of its time.”

The completion of Coral Ocean ’s rebuild was celebrated at the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, with a guest list of 100 that included the senior team from the German superyacht builder. Philipp von Arnim, head of business development at Lürssen, was there and says what he saw was a different yacht. “What they have done is impressive,” he says, adding that many factors worked in favour of making the rebuild a quicker process. While Coral Ocean was enjoyed by its first owner for 22 years, an interim owner oversaw a conversion at Lürssen in 2016 that made her commercially viable.

The 1994 delivery of Coral Island – renamed Coral Ocean after its conversion – was the start of major yacht development at Lürssen, and as such the yacht holds a special place for members of the German shipyard, especially Peter Lürssen, managing director Frithjof Schmidt and sales director Michael Breman, who were all present at her launch. “They have such an attachment and association with that yacht that when Ian bought the boat three years ago, there were naturally voices internally wondering what was going to happen,” von Arnim explains.

“Ian is known in the industry for being a bit of a disruptor and wants to do things differently. However, when we were able to step on board and see what he had achieved, we were pleasantly surprised and came off the boat with big smiles. We applauded Ian for maintaining some of the features and layouts that were there before; even the name is still the same. He respects heritage while also looking forward. He saw what needed to be done to get the yacht in a good state for charter but also for himself and his family.”

The launch party for the boat was also an opportune moment for Malouf to share his thoughts on Lürssen’s build quality. “Ian repeated to me and Michael how impressed he was that, after 25 years, there were some things that he simply didn’t need to touch and that the build quality was very good,” von Arnim recalls. “Hearing this was a very proud moment for us. Everything else is design, which you can like or not like; the same is true for the layout. Hearing from an owner that he had bought something of substance here and that he’s happy to have bought the yacht is what you want to hear as a shipyard.”

Charters booking right from the start and a full calendar for the Caribbean season ahead are plentiful rewards for the team’s efforts and Malouf’s investment. “It has had a good charter season and has come out of the blocks running, with big names having already been on board and they have all been happy,” says Malouf, who admits that he doesn’t like leaving the boat and will spend as much time on board as he possibly can. However, when all is said and done, this project has been one of passion and commitment that required vision, a large investment and a high degree of trust.

“From when the real works began until the boat was finished, I never stepped foot on it. There were plenty of video calls but that was as close as I got and that shows the trust I have in the team as well. Trust is a big deal, because you can easily get ripped off with bills coming in and you don’t even know what half of it is,” says Malouf. “It isn’t  for the faint-hearted and if I didn’t have Will there, I wouldn’t try it again.”

However, try it he did and the yacht’s fame hasn’t diminished. Coral Ocean pulling into a port or marina is still an event celebrated by yacht fans the world over.

I'd like to share some essential knowledge for existing or new owners of yachts and service providers in the industry to keep customers and vessels safe and secure in the marina industry, which differs a little bit from a corporate environment.

The first and most essential step is vetting your crew members for criminal records, their online footprint and their work history. When you offer services in this industry, you have to understand that a multimillion-dollar yacht is not just only a moving villa on the sea; it also has a very sophisticated expensive IT infrastructure, and its owners are oftentimes public figures who value their privacy and security, both physically and in the digital world.

Over the years, I have worked with my team from Oceans Yachting on numerous projects, and I'd like to share our expertise with other leaders in the industry.

Security Basics

Contractors who work with yacht owners have the absolute obligation to protect the asset's hardware, software, information and identity with the best technology and knowledge possible. After a successful implementation project (whether a build, refit or upgrade), the entire vessel needs to be monitored and maintained due to daily exposure to ever-changing cybersecurity threats, and its access, identity and location should be kept protected at all times.

The first unintended consequence of ai – and it’s huge, jpmorgan joins goldman sachs in serious bitcoin halving price warning.

If you have a staff of 20 or more permanently on board year-round, they need to be educated and trained on industry do's and don'ts. For example, all private work should only be performed on their own dedicated network in their off time. That way, they can't do damage to the client's network even if they are able to download a virus.

Network Considerations

In a regular cyberattack at a corporation, there might be financial or reputational damages; however, in the marina industry, the consequences can be way more severe, including jeopardizing human life in the event of a crash. For this reason, I highly recommend that commercially used vessels and private vessels have multiple networks set up—not just in the interest of complying with cyber risk guidelines from organizations like the International Maritime Organization, but also for the fundamental security of everybody on board. Every vessel should have the following networks:

1. A network that is only for communication and navigation. (Navigation systems should under no circumstances be connected to the internet; updates should be performed offline and on board.)

2. A crew network that is very limited in bandwidth and have many functions restricted, such as watching illegally obtained movies online, using Instagram, and so on. Activities like these can compromise the location and security of the owners and crew to pirates at sea or digital attackers.

3. A network just for the owners that is designed to meet the needs of the owner.

4. A dedicated network to monitor and access the entire engine system and communications.

5. Three internet lines: a shoreline for when the vessel is at the marina, a satellite line for use on the ocean and a 5G line for when the vessel is close to the coast or shore.

Work-based email and cellular lines should be controlled internally; no crew members should use personal emails or alternative sources to communicate without explicit permission.

Remaining Vigilant And Prepared

The captain and security officer of a vessel always need to be in close contact with the IT and security team, while the main staff should have limited knowledge and access to anything security-related. I can't stress the importance of security and the elevated risk a yacht's owners often face enough. This industry is a small but wealthy one, so they may be attractive to pirates at sea, kidnappers or cyberattacks for ransom.

It's important to look at all elements all the time and minimize clients' exposure (including to personal security risks). Having a small closed circle of people on board is better. There should be an area of operations established for every situation. Make sure to evaluate the risk and the level of security needed for the asset.

Get the right people for each job, because every job is different.

In most situations, for all corporations or industries, crisis response time is more valuable than money to business owners or CEOS, as a quick response can minimize damage to data, reputation and clients.

When it comes to the hardware service providers use, everything should be redundant, including battery backups, firewalls, switches, access points, servers and so on. This is because on a vessel, you cannot just go and order or buy a switch the same day if you are on the open ocean. Similarly, all equipment should be kept licensed and monitored remotely to ensure immediate responses are possible.

I hope that this article provides a view into the differences between a corporate human and IT environment and the yachting and marina industry.

5 things to know about North Palm Beach mega-yacht owner, billionaire Michael Bozzuto

xenia yacht owner

Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is fighting for the right to moor his 164-foot mega-yacht behind a waterfront house he owns at 932 Shore Dr. in North Palm Beach.

But the Village of North Palm Beach has told Bozzuto he doesn't have this right.

It's the latest example of how big money landing in Florida is running up against Old Florida residents who want their communities to stay low-key.

After years of disputes over the yacht, Bozzuto recently filed a lawsuit against the municipality, asking a judge to agree that he has the right to the use of his house and his dock.

Who is Michael Bozzuto, and why is he suing the Village of North Palm Beach?

Here are five things to know:

1. Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is a longtime North Palm Beach resident

Bozzuto is the billionaire owner of a privately held, family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut called Bozzuto's Inc. The company is a distributor of food and household products to retailers in New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Bozzuto's was founded by Michael's late father, Adam.

Even though Bozzuto's Inc. is based in Connecticut, Bozzuto has lived in the Village of North Palm Beach, population 13,000, for 20 years.

2. Besides owning a yacht, what are Michael Bozzuto's hobbies?

In addition to being a businessman, Bozzuto is an investor and philanthropist. He is a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics.

He is also an under-the-radar resident who likes to collect houses and yachts, said his lawyer, former Florida Bar president Gregory Coleman.

Bozzuto bought the motor yacht, Honey, about 10 years ago for an undisclosed sum. The Westport mega-yacht was built in 2007 and is the largest of several yachts Bozzuto owns.

Bozzuto also owns four houses in the Village of North Palm Beach. This includes the house at 932 Shore Dr., where he wants to dock Honey. In 2014, Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house, which was built in 1961, according to Palm Beach County property records.

The property is on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Honey.

Bozzuto's residence is in another part of North Palm Beach, on Harbour Isles Court.

3. Michael Bozzuto's net worth isn't known but billionaire owns property outside of North Palm Beach, too

Bozzuto made waves recently when in January he paid $31.1 million for a waterfront house in nearby Palm Beach Shores.

The Singer Island house with two docks stretches into the Intracoastal Waterway just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet. The three-lot parcel on 1.5 acres has about 200 feet of waterfront.

The property was bought from an owner whose family had owned it for decades. It's unclear if Bozzuto will make any changes to the property.

In a brief interview in February, Bozzuto said: “It’s a house, and it will probably be a house."

4. Why can't Bozzuto park his yacht behind his North Palm Beach house?

The Village of North Palm Beach rules say that a private dock or pier can only be used by the occupant of the house. But the village doesn't define the word "occupant."

Bozzuto's lawsuit said while the village has discussed whether to define an occupant as a resident, it never has done so.

Hundreds of other property owners dock a boat behind their North Palm Beach house but do not live there year-round.

Therefore Bozzuto said he's being singled out because neighbors just don't like his boat's big size. This selective enforcement is wrong, his lawsuit said.

5. What does North Palm Beach think about the lawsuit?

Unfortunately, this is a mystery until the village responds to Bozzuto's lawsuit in public court records.

The village's longtime lawyer, Lenard Rubin, who knows the municipality's history with boats and houses, did not respond to requests for comment. Neither did the village's manager, Chuck Huff.

Joe Lewis’ $250 million superyacht, ranked among the world’s 25-most valuable, sets sail after he pays US fine

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club owner Joe Lewis

Joe Lewis’ superyacht is on the move again after spending most of the past year holed up in a Mediterranean port while the British billionaire faced insider-trading charges in the US.

His 322-foot (98-meter) Aviva — which he put up as collateral for bail —  has traveled more than 400 nautical miles from Malta to cities along Albania’s coast as well as the Greek island of Zakynthos since  he was sentenced  April 4 to three years probation, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

After departing Zakynthos earlier this week, the Tavistock Group founder’s yacht was near Kalamata in southern Greece on Thursday morning local time, the data show. It’s the most the roughly $250 million vessel has traveled in about seven months, though it’s unclear if Lewis is on board.

Lewis, 87, pledged his yacht along with his private jet to secure his release following his arrest in July. A few months later, Aviva docked until April 5 in the Maltese capital of Valletta, where it can cost as much as €750 ($800) a night to moor vessels that exceed 75 meters.

Lewis, who was scheduled to have eye surgery in London recently, was prohibited from setting foot on the yacht that has long served as part-residence, part-office while awaiting trial. He was only allowed on board after paying a $5 million fine after sentencing, which he settled soon after the verdict in Manhattan.

A representative for Lewis, who has a net worth of about $7.3 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, declined to comment.

Lewis, whose global empire includes five-star hotels, private lenders and enclaves for the wealthy, launched Aviva in 2017. It includes eight guest suites, a helipad, padel tennis court, spa and a cinema. It ranked among the world’s 25-most valuable superyachts shortly after its launch, alongside those owned by Middle Eastern royals.

The yacht has also displayed works from Lewis’ private art collection, which is valued at more than $1 billion and includes pieces by Picasso, Freud, Klimt and Degas.

Events that authorities say took place on the yacht were a key piece of evidence that prosecutors used against him.

At dinner one night in September 2019, the billionaire received favorable news about Mirati Therapeutics Inc., an oncology company where he was a major investor, leading him to pass along the tip to a host of people, including the pilots of his private jet, according to US regulators.

Those pilots — Bryan “Marty” Waugh and Patrick O’Connor — were also charged with trading on inside information. O’Connor pleaded guilty to securities fraud and conspiracy and is due to be sentenced in May, while Waugh is fighting the charges.
