Saudade is a 45m sailing yacht built by wally in 2008..

In case you don’t know her and you see her for the first time, would you see a Wally in her? It’s an untypically deckhouse. If I see it with the Wally glasses, it’s a bit conservative ;). Even so, she is very stylish. I would describe her sporty, elegant and clean with her flush deck 🙂

Her exterior and interior design come from the boards of Eidsgaard Design . The naval architecture was done by Bill Tripp Design .

T he Wally shipyard, characterized by the authenticity and elegance of each one of the members of its family offers the delicate 148 Saudade, an impressive sailboat of 148 feet that accommodates an exquisite range of details, which made it a worthy representative of this Italian house.

Its design allows you to navigate large journeys, at 13 knots of speed, with an excellent equipment to carry a life full of luxury and commodities on the high seas.

Considered one of the greatest models, Saudade achieves a perfect mix of the traditional with the most high performance of a mega-yacht, because despite its large volume, this master piece results to be of great speed and, at the same time, favorite for a trip around the world.

To start the tour on the upper deck, the cleanliness that its design show allow to appreciate the most minimum detail since the materials that it has denote the quality of the brand that signs it.

This section is characterized by an open command cabin, which perfectly coincides with the elegance of the lines of the yacht, where the los command controls allow operating the navigation of it. Towards the inside you can appreciate a luxurious lounge considered the social cabin, where there are two dining tables and available seats for 12 people, which propitious a cozy environment.

The access to the main lounge in through a crystal sliding door, where the view that it offers is of 360 degrees, thanks to the large windows placed everywhere.

It counts with a dining room for eight at starboard, as well as a comfortable and elegant lounge for 12 people, at the back a liquid crystal screen of 40 inches, which comes out from the central sofa. It is worth to mention the style and design of the sailboat, which at large features is perfectly well distributed in its spaces. 

Continuing towards stern there are located the stairs that lead to the lower deck and that continue up front in a “gangway”, to take you to the main bedroom. The Master Suite counts with a room lounge type, individual bathroom with jacuzzi and office, same that it has also an access from the hallway and that it can turn into an extra bedroom for guests.

It also has two extra rooms for guests as well as three more for the crew and one comfortable lounge, from where you may keep monitoring the navigation, as well as an indoor command bridge next to the stairs.

Without a doubt, we could not overlook the absolute beauty in the minimalism of the 148 Saudade, which is an honorable member of the well known Wally brand, it’s so exquisite characteristics attribute the place that is occupies as one of the largest and magnificent boats that the shipyard has built denoting the clear traditional charm that all its models carry out.

Saudade, My Song and Grande Orazio win Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta

With several positions undecided throughout the fleet of sailing superyachts taking part in the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2015 , the last day of racing was always going to be tense. Saudade and Ganesha were tied on points at the top of Class A, while the Perini Navi Clan VIII and the 55 metre ketch Marie were tied for third. In Class C, Blues and the Spirit Yachts 100 Gaia were tied for third, with Cape Arrow just one point behind.

Sadly, the tension turned to the weather as the breeze struggled to make an appearance on the waters of Porto Cervo, and after several postponements and a race that was abandoned part way through the first leg, the race committee hoisted flags november over alpha, signalling that racing was being abandoned for the day.

It meant that Saudade held on to win Class A on countback over Ganesha , while Clan VIII took third over Marie , also on countback. “The win means a lot for me because we tried to win so often,” beams the delighted owner of Saudade . “We’ve won one or two races before but not the whole regatta, so this is the first time and we are very, very happy!”

“It was a great week, well organised, with a good race committee,” smiles Clan VIII ’s owner. “It was great sailing. We got the second place on the first day and today we were expecting a match race against Marie . Regretfully the last race was cancelled but it was a great week and I am of course happy having got third place with this heavy boat. We had a marvellous team on board – professional and fun – so all in all it was a great week!”

In Class B, an impressive three wins from three races meant that My Song could claim an undisputed victory. “A couple of times we really had to work hard to keep WinWin at bay,” says America’s Cup veteran Tommasso Chieffi, who was calling tactics on My Song , “so we’re all very pleased and the feelings are all very good. It wasn’t a walk in the park, but that makes this victory so much more special.”

Class C was taken by the Southern Wind yacht Grande Orazio after an emphatic performance this week. “This week it was important for me, my family, the crew and also the Southern Wind shipyard,” says her owner, Massimiliano Florio. “It’s important because last year we won, but this year we had three first places. For next year I would like to repeat this performance. I’m very happy!”

Although the regatta featured light winds throughout, the racing was as close as ever and the 40-metre exclusion zone around each yacht proved instrumental in keeping the racing fun but safe. To help gauge distances to competitors, each yacht was equipped with a laser rangefinder supplied by insurance company Pantaenius. “These boats are worth a lot of money and if two boats collide it could be a few thousand or a few million, and people could get hurt," says Clive Walker, captain of  WinWin.  "The rangefinders are a very useful tool.”

“You definitely use the rangefinder a lot,” agrees Tom Aiken, captain of Gaia . “There are parts of the course where the boats struggle to stay 40 metres apart – for instance, on the first day we had a pile up at a mark when the wind died and everyone came charging up, but I think common sense prevails as everyone is looking out for each other. You also tend to think the boats are closer than they are – when you get the rangefinder out you sometimes find they’re quite a long way away still!”

The event, of course, is about more than just the action on the water, and for owners, their guests and crews it is the social programme that makes the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta so special. “The Loro Piana Owners’ Dinner was exceptional, and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is the best,” says Massimiliano Florio. “Last night we were at the party at Phi Beach, which was beautiful. I feel very emotional – this week in Porto Cervo is a beautiful week and the atmosphere is exceptional.”

“The social side was perfectly organised,” agrees Clan VIII ’s owner. “The car services, the Phi Beach party – basically, there is nothing to complain about.”

“I very much enjoy this regatta because Porto Cervo is a really good location for sailing and racing,” adds the owner of Saudade . “The beauty of the landscape is nice, onshore it’s so nice, the water is nice – we don’t find a better place to sail. We are really happy and we really enjoyed the week.”

“It was thrilling to see how such imposing boats managed to provide exciting racing in fairly light winds,” says Riccardo Bonadeo, commodore of the YCCS. “As always the Loro Piana event brought a varied fleet – some new boats competing for the first time in Porto Cervo and many owners who come back year after year for the special atmosphere of this regatta.”

“A special thanks must go to the Yacht Club,” added Pier Luigi Loro Piana, deputy chairman of Loro Piana. “They put on a wonderful show but I know how much work there is behind the scenes in creating an event like this. As a sponsor I am really proud of supporting an event like this and superyacht racing. The quality of the boats was very high this year and the racing was super. Thanks to all the owners attending and I’ll see you all next year.”

Launched in 1963,  Saudade was constructed to the highest standards of the day.  Saudade’s name, Portuguese for a "profound sense of nostalgia or longing," was given to her on launching.  She spent her early days in England and then in Lisbon where her first owner's mistress resided.  In many ways she represents one of the last of her kind. Within a few years the classic wooden ocean racing yawl, pioneered by Olin Stevens in 1929, would give way to more modern hull shapes made of fiberglass.   She spent the 70s and 80s in the Mediterranean, finally making her way across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and New England.  When I found Saudade in 2017 she was on her way to dereliction in one of Key West’s grungier boat yards. She has been lovingly restored, and is now ready for chartering.

Judel-Vrolijk was the naval architect firm involved in the professional vessel plans for SAUDADE OF HAMILTON. Her interior design was realised by Pieter Beeldsnijder Design. Judel-Vrolijk is also associated with the yacht wider design collaboration for this yacht. Created by Royal Huisman this vessel was fabricated in the known yacht building country the Netherlands. She was successfully launched in Vollenhove in 1994 before being delivered to the owner. The hull was constructed with aluminium. The sailing yacht main superstructure is made for the most part from aluminium. With a width of 7.22 m / 23.7 ft SAUDADE OF HAMILTON has moderate room. A fairly deep draught of 3.9m (12.8ft) determines the list of marinas she can enter, contingent on their particular depth.

Powered by a single MTU diesel main engines, SAUDADE OF HAMILTON can attain a high speed of 12 knots. For propulsion SAUDADE OF HAMILTON has a single screw propeller. Her total HP is 360 HP and her total Kilowatts are 265. Regarding thrusters she utilises Hundested.

BALTIC 63 SAUDADE

The Baltic 63 Saudade, commissioned by a well-known ocean racing yachtsman, was built alongside her sistership Sisisi, both boats being identical in design and specification. They were conceived as racing yachts to compete under the IOR Maxi Class rule of the time. Unfortunately, the minimum size limit was lifted to 80ft shortly after the yachts were launched!

Both yachts raced successfully under the IOR handicap mainly in offshore competition throughout Europe.

The Saudade/SiSiSi project was our first major involvement with naval architects judel/vrolijk and the yachts, with their narrow sterns and wide maximum beam, typified IOR (International Offshore Rule) shapes of the time.

Despite being racing yachts first and foremost, they were also designed for comfortable cruising with full, teak-finished interiors. In order to save weight when they were in competition mode and to make sail handling and stowage easier, part of the interior was designed to be removed.

In terms of construction, both yachts used advanced methods for the time, with foam sandwich cores, vinylester, S-Glass and aramid fibres in the matrix. This made them considerably lighter than cruising yachts of an equivalent size.

The only noticeable outward difference between Saudade and SiSiSi was hull colour. Saudade was red and SiSiSi a combination of green and blue.
