“A Riva motorboat is always restorable.”

Let’s find out today in this article what the cult models are, how they came into being and how some of the most prized pieces of Italian boating history are being reborn today.

Wooden Riva motorboats: some boats are forever

For some people they are the most beautiful in the world, others would go to great lengths to get them, and there are probably even some who don’t like them, for who knows what reason. But one thing is certain: everyone knows the Riva. A British magazine in the 1990s conducted a poll among its readers about which boat name they knew best. The result? Aquarama, one of Riva’s cult models. There are few countries in the world where Carlo Riva’s boats have not arrived.

Why Riva motorboats are worth so much

“It has been the strength of the shipyard from the very beginning ,” explains Piero Maria Gibellini , president of the Riva Historical Society , founded in 1998 with Carlo Riva himself. and there were no real international rivals, only competitors on the local level. Riva’s, on the other hand, were distributed everywhere. And then one of these boats is equivalent to a cashier’s check.”

The work done around the brand from the creation of the association, to the various clubs with members, around the world, has ensured that a Riva boat, wherever it is in the globe, has a certain secure value. Carlo Riva was undoubtedly very skillful not only in building and designing, but also in advertising and selling his Rivas.

The golden years of Riva’s wooden motorboats

The period between the 1960s and 1970s, when all the celebrities from the movies and beyond spent their vacations on the French Riviera aboard their Ariston or Aquarama left an indelible imprint and played a role in the consecration of the brand, so much so that even today a Riva refers back to those images and protagonists as well.

“Despite this ,” continued Piero Gibellini. do not think that one of these boats has a certain value just because it belonged to a star. The only two that, in my opinion, have a special value related to their owners, which may have its own weight in the price, are the Riva Junior that belonged to Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren’s Aquarama, which by the way is for sale.”

The most beautiful Riva speedboat of all

There is also a classic Riva that, according to many, deserves the title “most beautiful of all.” Among the supporters of the thesis are Carlo Riva himself and Piero Gibellini. “The Ariston is the boat I fell in love with,” explains Piero Gibellini. – I purchased one in 1989. For me and for the Engineer (Carlo Riva ed.) it was, and is, the most beautiful. This design has the appeal of disregarding all market and usage logics. You can’t say it’s the most comfortable, but it’s the absolute purest.”

From the early 1950s it was the Ariston that was the only model that remained on the list throughout the Carlo Riva management, in production until 1971. In time it was later joined by the Super Ariston, slightly longer and more powerful, which remained in production until 1974.

“When we talk about the most beautiful, we cannot forget the Triton, which for a long time was one of the top models and the predecessor of the Aquarama, which was later born on the same hull. The appeal of the Triton was so strong that it took Aquarama about five years to get it out of production.”

The Aquarama, Riva’s speedboat par excellence

The Aquarama is perhaps of all models the most famous and was born at the explicit request of customers who wanted a more practical Triton. In order not to spoil the perfect line of the boats-just think of the “Carlo Riva stern,” which develops as one seamless volume-the Triton was, when tested, impractical.

The Aquarama, which went into production in 1962, brought improvements, such as a sickle bar at the perimeter of the bow gunwale for resting your feet or an easier-to-reach stern sundeck. In 1969 came the last version of the hull, the smoothest in sailing, and the livability process culminated in 1972 with the Aquarama Special, born on the hull of the Super, which can be recognized by its more elongated stern, crossed by a walkway that ends in a swim platform (a solution we see today that is increasingly larger and on all types of boats) to make access to the water easier.

From the beginning of the century with the first prototypes, predating mass production, by Serafino Riva, who first tried his hand at building pleasure boats, making a name for himself in powerboating, wooden Rivas have spanned almost a century, until 1980 and the Olympic, the last remaining wooden model to be mass produced, excluding the Aquarama Special, which remained on the list until 1996, since ’90 produced on demand.

How to restore Riva motorboats.

The world’s most famous speedboats are, however, still in splendid shape today. How? Thanks to the work of people like Romano Bellini and his company, Bellini Nautica, which he carries on with his children Battista, managing director, and Martina, marketing manager.

Riva-Romano-Bellini

Romano Bellini aboard an Aquarama from the collection.

“A Riva is always restorable,” says Romano Bellini, who, while not a shipwright, has been working on restoring wooden boats all his life. Suffice it to say that the first Riva bought it when he was 16 years old, and today he has the largest collection in the world (Read the article here )

“In restoration,” Romano continues, “we work mainly with Rivas and do at most a dozen boats a year, no more. Each boat needs an average of 9-12 months. It all starts with an analysis of the boat, the condition of the hull, engines, and upholstery. The goal is to always restore the original parts, but there are also times when this is not possible. For wood, the choice of raw material is crucial: the logs we use must be perfect, depending on the parts of the boat. Photo Courtesy: Bellini Nautica For the dashboard, for example, they should be without veins, as Carlo Riva wanted. The mahogany that our shipwrights employ on the Rivas must remain at least five years to season. For upholstery, we have been using the same upholsterer for forty years, and this applies to chrome plating, which needs very special processes. Photo Courtesy: Bellini Nautica It takes a lot of passion, because it is meticulous work, where you cannot be superficial or hasty. To restore a Riva to its original splendor requires, for example, thirty coats of paint. And, before the last two, the boat has to be put in the water to see that everything is okay, from the engines to the seal. I care about every single boat they entrust to me, as if it were my own, also because they are pieces of history that need to be preserved as best as possible.”

Reinventing Iconic: On Board the Riva 110 Dolcevita

Iconic style on a larger scale – Riva brings the feel of its famous runabouts to its 33.5-metre superyacht. Risa Merl learns how...

Since Brigitte Bardot was first spotted on board her Riva Super Florida Nounours off Saint-Tropez in the 1960s, the Riva brand has been synonymous with glamour, speed and classic good looks. It’s a heady combination that has earned the Italian builder a loyal fan base. Vintage Rivas are so legendary, in fact, they are some of the few yachts to increase in value as they age – the last wooden-hulled Aquarama to be built was sold at auction for $975,000 (£763,000) nearly 40 years after its launch.

The question was, as Riva moved into building fibreglass motor yachts in the 2000s, could the style, grace – and success – of a classic Riva ever be replicated on a larger scale? The builder’s latest fibreglass flagship, the 33.5 metre 110' Dolcevita, is specifically designed in the hopes of answering this query with a resounding yes.

“Bringing the iconic Riva styling into a larger boat was the target since the beginning of the project,” says Giordano Pellacani, head of sales and marketing at Riva, under the Ferretti Group umbrella. “If you look at the previous [large] Riva models, they were not exactly in that style.” The Dolcevita is a step up from the 29.9 metre Corsaro model that, while good-looking in its own right, did not carry forward the trademark Riva styling to the same extent that the Dolcevita aims to.

Riva embarked on a thorough review and development process, spending twice as long in the planning phase as they usually would on a project. “We interviewed many customers and found they wanted something that reminded them of smaller Rivas, with attention poured into our classic details – but on a megayacht,” Pellacani says, referring to Riva’s trademark use of mahogany wood, gleaming stainless steel and rich leathers. These features loom large on the Dolcevita, but with a modern twist. The team at Officina Italiana Design – the exclusive designer of Rivas since 1994 – was inspired by classic Rivas but was careful not to create a retro boat. The new Dolcevita had to perfectly balance modern styling with the timeless luxury that clients associate with Riva.

“Riva design centres around clean, spare lines, resulting in elegant boats,” says the CEO of Officina Italiana Design , Sergio Beretta. “The 110' Dolcevita is in the spirit of Riva tradition. The lines are clean and elegant, including throughout the model’s interior, where the style was personalised to suit the owner’s requirements.” With an integrated flybridge and a silver-grey paint job, the 110' Dolcevita has a sporty look. Gaze closer, however, and you’ll notice sinuous exterior lines that are detailed yet well-balanced, providing just enough handsome Riva styling while meeting the design team’s maxim that less is more. The black windows on the main deck form a continuous band, a feature that defines the exterior but is best appreciated from inside, where such glazing allows for 270-degree views.

“The saloon has unusual windows that run for most of the yacht’s profile, creating a sense of visual space and breadth aft because there is no structure,” says Mauro Micheli, chief designer of Officina Italiana. “From an engineering point of view, it was an interesting challenge. The idea was, how can we give something to owners that no one else has in this size range? You might see windows like this on a much larger yacht, like Vava 2 or Musashi . But how could we create this atmosphere on a smaller yacht? When we told the engineers what we wanted, they said, ‘You’re crazy’.”

To conjure up an open feeling reminiscent of a Riva runabout inside a superyacht was no small feat. Riva’s engineers devised a “spider structure” that allowed for huge windows supported by minuscule mullions. Four transversal and four longitudinal pieces of stainless steel combine to make a frame that is attached to the hull, supporting the stress of the yacht and connecting the hull and superstructure. The result is what Pellacani calls “the crystal palace” – a light-filled interior with seamless windows, remarkable indoor-outdoor continuity and panoramic views.

The abundance of glass lets in massive amounts of light to the wood-filled interior, illuminating the high-gloss joinery. “We used a lot of wood, as per Riva tradition, but in this case we went for rosewood,” Micheli says. Rosewood is similar to mahogany, but has darker veining and a dense grain that makes it very durable, and the wood takes a polish well.

For 70 per cent of its boats built these days, Riva uses pre-engineered woods to avoid mistakes, knots or misalignments showing in the veneer. “For Dolcevita, we opted to use real wood and keep the defects in, we wanted to see them, then apply our love of detailing,” Pellacani says. “We use more material this way – because sometimes you need quite a big piece for the furniture – which is reflected in the price point.”

The wood is refined by a team of in-house carpenters, the same craftsmen who work on smaller Rivas. Real wood, in all its natural glory and coated in gleaming varnish, certainly elicits the richness of a classic Riva launch. Deckheads are raised and the ceiling inset with shining rosewood, which gives a warmth to the spacious saloon.

To complement the light-reflecting rosewood, Officina Italiana Design brought in a pale-grey matte finish for the walls, which matches the light grey sofa. The interior has an understated elegance. Classic nautical materials combine with modern furnishings, such as the glass dining room table paired with leather and stainless-steel chairs. “There are a lot of details in leather and stainless steel that is the leitmotif for the interior and exterior,” Micheli says. The Riva branding is signalled in this and in more literal detailing, like the curved silver door handles imprinted with a Riva logo.

Nine Dolcevita hulls have been sold so far, heading off to locations ranging from Asia and the Middle East to Europe and the US. Half of those owners already have a smaller Riva and were looking for something to represent their love of the brand on a bigger scale. Hull five was the first to be seen by the public at the Monaco Yacht Show last September; the first four were delivered quickly and are being enjoyed by their owners. The new offering seems to appeal to both to Riva loyalists and to those looking for interesting amenities in a smaller package.

Feedback from one owner, who was looking for “big boat features but on a smaller scale” inspired Dolcevita’s unusual layout. While nearly every large yacht has the guest passageway to starboard and the crew to port, this Riva has the hallway leading to the full-beam owner’s cabin on the port side.

“We looked at our bigger 40- to 50-metre boats, and one of the things they must have is a dayhead near the main saloon, because owners throw dinner parties and do not want people in the guest cabins,” Pellacani says. “So we decided to have a very large dayhead on the left side of the main deck.” This dayhead is tucked under the port-side superstructure, set in a wide hallway just before the door to the owner’s suite.

Like the saloon, the master cabin is adorned with rosewood, grey soft goods and carpeting, and chocolate-brown leather chairs. Stainless-steel details also decorate the raised ceiling and are used for the wardrobe door handles. A smoked glass wall across from the bed adds depth and conceals a television. This recurrent theme of “Riva details”, reaffirming the yacht’s ties to its heritage, is carried through into the guest cabins as well. Four are found below, with the layout customisable. The owner of hull five opted for three VIPs and one cabin with twins and a Pullman berth. The rosewood details are even seen in the guest bathrooms.

Exterior spaces aim to recreate the feeling of flying jauntily around the harbour on a much smaller Riva. One such space is the foredeck lounge, accessed via a stairway leading forward from the starboard side. This sunpad-laden spot encapsulates the feeling of sprawling out on the back of an Aquarama, but with even more comfort. The foredeck lounge can also be customised to the owner’s wishes: this one has a rumble seat all the way forward, while another Dolcevita has a spa pool built on the bow.

The stylish helm stations bear the hallmarks of a classic Riva with more wood, leather and stainless details. A second helm is found on the sundeck, which also brings in carbon fibre detailing in the hardtop.“The Riva tradition also is for the exterior area to have a lot of details,” Pellacani says. This presented another challenge, as all the exterior elements of the yacht – from the ceiling of the flybridge to the inside of railings to the bases of (fixed) deck furniture – are painted to match the hull and perfectly polished and flawless to meet Riva’s standards. “It’s very expensive and very detailed, and to paint these items and protect them from scratching during construction is challenging.”

Intense attention to detail is what makes Riva stand out, for instance installing screws and then painting their heads in the same colour as the hull. So it makes sense when Beretta says, “We don’t think of 110' Dolcevita as a ‘superyacht’ – she is simply a yacht built in the spirit of iconic Rivas.”

Iconic is an overused word. Many claim it, yet few are truly deserving. The undoubtedly iconic Riva runabouts like Ms Bardot’s are an exception. Only time will tell if the 110' Dolcevita will reach such legendary heights. So far she is certainly making Riva fans sit up and take notice – and place their orders, too.

Best Riva boats: 10 stunning boats from the famous Italian builder

  • Top stories

No-one has ever done a better job of making timeless works of art out of mahogany. But there's more to the best Riva boats than just woodworking

Decades after Riva stopped making wooden boats, no-one has ever done a better job of making timeless works of art out of mahogany. But there always was much more to the legendary boatyard than its woodworking skills.

Power, performance and gorgeous looks have always been as crucial to the Riva boat offering as impeccably grain-matched dowels and 12 coats of varnish. And the yard has built some absolute classic motor boats in fibreglass too.

With a history that stretches back into another century, choosing just ten of the best Riva boats to write about is a tricky task but here are my personal favourites from oldest to newest.

Are Riva boats still being built?

For those with only a passing interest in motor boats the name Riva probably conjures up images of the classic Italian styled all-wood muscle boat, cruising on the waters of Lake Como.

But the desirable marque has continued to make motor yachts for many years, often at the forefront of innovation, with new sportsfly and flybridge models being built today – and a number of new more traditionally-styled open boat options too.

Ronzino – built 1935

If Carlo Riva gave the boatyard the iconic status that we still acknowledge today, it was his father Serafino’s passion for racing hydroplanes that set the ball rolling, back in the 1920s.

Motor boats like the victorious Ronzino, built for Count Metello Rossi, shone the limelight on the Riva brand for the very first time, and set the stage for the famous high-performance runabouts that followed.

Fifteen feet long and powered by an inboard four-cylinder, 145hp, 1.5-litre BPM petrol engine, this Riva boat was built of double-skinned aviation plywood on oak formers.

Riva Tritone – built 1950

Twin-engined and more than 26ft long, the Tritone was a muscleboat before the word had been invented.

The earliest examples sported 177hp engines and had a top speed of 45 knots but the 16-year course of its 258-unit production saw the Tritone grow slightly longer and a lot more powerful, culminating in the Cadillac model with its pair of 320hp V8s.

With a less voluptuous appearance than the fabled Aquarama, which shared its hull, this motor boat is still regarded by many aficionados as the quintessential wooden Riva – powerful, authoritative and effortlessly elegant.

Riva Bertram 25 Sport Fisherman – built 1970

In 1970 both Riva and Bertram found themselves owned by the Whittaker Corporation.

The synergies weren’t immediately obvious but Carlo Riva knew he had to get into fibreglass boatbuilding and Dick Bertram’s boats had an unequalled reputation for high-speed seakeeping thanks to their race-proven deep-V hulls.

Carlo’s decision to bring a 25 over to Sarnico to fit out as a Mediterranean luxury weekender, with an elevated finish, plenty of interior wood, and a more versatile cockpit design, was a great move and became an instant classic.

Design legend Sonny Levi was not just a superb naval architect and brilliant engineer, he also drew some of the best-looking boats of his era.

When Riva asked him to design a triple-engined sportscruiser powered by his innovative surface drive system, the result was destined to be something special.

The 37ft, two-berth Riva 2000 packed 1,050 horsepower in a 20-degree deep-V hull, and could reach 53 knots fully loaded.

It inspired boatyards on both sides of the Atlantic to up their game, and still turns heads today, 40 years later.

Riva Rudy – built 1972

Small, fast, fun and gorgeous to look at, the 19ft Rudy speedboat was Riva’s first in-house GRP project, its hull mould taken off a wooden Riva Junior.

With a single 190hp four-cylinder petrol engine and shaft drive, it made an ideal yacht tender, ski-boat or fun runabout, while its stylish looks, 36-knot top speed and big aft sunbed offered all the advantages of the wooden boats without the maintenance headaches.

Riva 50 Superamerica – built 1981

In the days when the London Boat Show was squashed into the original 1930s Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre, the biggest boat on display was often the 50ft Riva Superamerica shown by Lewis Marine, behind a red rope and guarded by a uniformed commissionaire.

British boatbuilders at the time had nothing to match it, but as well as picking up some valuable marketing tips, they also saw just how cool and desirable a big flybridge yacht could be.

It took a while, but when Fairline’s 50 came out in 1986 it represented a huge step for UK boatbuilding – its two-tone gelcoat a conscious homage to its Italian inspiration.

Riva Ferrari 32 – built 1988

Early Riva boats sported engines from Chris-Craft and there was at least one Lamborghini-powered Aquarama.

The shipyard was never shy of collaborations with big brands and in the world of high-octane luxury, the Riva Ferrari is top of the list.

So although it’s a shame it didn’t have Ferrari engines, the Riva Ferrari’s twin 390hp BPM V8s with surface drives still pushed it to 53 knots, and it was designed using Ferrari’s CAD software, an idea as advanced for the time as the carbon fibre used for the radar arch.

Only 40 Riva Ferrari 32s were built.

Riva Aquariva – built 2000

In 1998 Riva was owned by Vickers and wooden boat manufacture had been halted two years before. The yard was floundering, but Stephen Julius, a canny entrepreneur, understood the problem, and the brand.

The result was the Aquariva, 33ft of perfectly proportioned dayboat with all the quality of its predecessors, but in fibreglass.

It paved the way for Riva’s motor boat future, and when Julius sold up in 2000, Ferretti simply had to keep going on the same path.

Riva 76 Perseo – built 2015

Given Riva’s indelible association with fast, open sports machines, it’s easy to forget how pioneering the yard has also been when it comes to the more sensible world of flybridge cruising boats.

And dazzled by the pure allure of the 76 Perseo you might be forgiven for not noticing that it too has an upper helm station, and seating up there for ten – not forgetting the spacious deck saloon and four sleeping cabins down below.

Sensible, however, it isn’t – the Perseo packs up to 3,600hp and can blast along at close to 40 knots.

Riva Rivamare – built 2016

The old Riva boat spirit is alive and well in the 39ft Rivamare, a fibreglass reimagining of the legendary Aquarama, complete with a powerful flared bow, wraparound windscreen, sculpted stern and a central walkway up through the sunbed.

Times have changed, though, so it also offers a modern medium-V hull, twin 400hp Volvos on Duoprop drives, a practical galley, air-conditioning and a gyro stabiliser.

But it remains an old-school open boat, without even a radar mast, and it goes as good as it looks.

A Closer Look at Domino By Riva Yachts

Superyachts are becoming more popular every year. The population of superyachts on the water is growing steadily and yacht builders are continuously testing the limits with the latest technology and design innovations with their newest and latest builds. One of the oldest and most well-known boat and yacht builders is Riva Yachts. Their history dates all the way back to 1842 and the company has gone through many transitions through the years, including a history in speedboats. Today, Riva is one of the most competitive yacht builders in the world and their superyacht lineup is as impressive as the name. One of Riva’s 2014 builds, 88 Domino Super is an example of Riva’s superb craftsmanship and unique design and it is currently for sale.

88 Domino Super

This new vessel is an adaptation of the old model but with upgraded versions of features that were already a success in the older model. The 88 Domino is 26.7 meters long with a 6.30 beam, but what is so stunning that it will make you look twice, is its profile. The colors pop and have such a distinct look with two colors that work so well together. The dark grey, “London Grey” specifically, which is complemented by a lighter grey details on specific areas of the deck.

The Cockpit and other features

The cockpit has a lot of space. It was specifically designed extra spacious to allow for guests and crew. The transom was designed to not only lead to the cockpit but it serves the purpose of an extra platform for swimmers when it’s lowered into the water. When you’re on the transom, take a few steps off to the side and you’re in the cockpit where you and your guests will find lots of comfortable lounging to mingle and relax on a Chaise lounge, sofas and even sit around a dining table with 6 foldable chairs for 6 guests to have a seat. The port side is where you’ll find a sink as well as access to the crew’s quarters. The starboard side is where you will find storage compartments, an ice maker and a flight of steps that lead to a beautiful sundeck.

A little change for the pilot has been made on the 88 Domino Super. The pilot will now have control of the yacht from the middle of the yacht, a design measure that realized the benefit of the middle ground being the best area for smoother control over the yacht. The change worked perfectly for the yacht, the pilot and the crew.

The Domino was built with added extras that the smaller version of the Domino was not. A 40 inch TV was added to the master suite, there is a third helm station and the Bimini was designed for a bow table and sofa and Gyro stabilizers were added. For the sunbathers, there is a central sunbathing at the aft for a more spacious, open area to relax and you and your guests can enjoy some time in the open-space spa where you’ll take in the amazing ocean views as you are pampered. Riva’s unique use of leather details, LED lights and stainless steel elements around you make it an even more delightful experience.

You can reach the master stateroom through the lobby and it is a bright and radiant room due to the portholes and two windows that give you breathtaking views while you cruise. All of the cabins are equipped with beds and some are designed with double wardrobes as well as some, with washing machines. The luxurious details don’t end, from one end of the yacht to the other. Glass tables, leather details, Corain flooring, plenty of storage and more, are found throughout and there is no skimping on places to sit and relax with your family and friends as you cruise on your ocean voyage.

  • Length – 26.7 meters
  • Beam – 6.30 meters
  • Displacement – 2,650 pounds
  • Engines – 2,400 – horsepower MTU diesels
  • Sleeping quarters – 2 twin-berth staterooms, owners stateroom
  • Speed – Cruising speed, 35 kt and Max speed 42 kt
  • Generators - Super tropical A/c, 2 x 28kw Generators
  • Satellite antennas – Equipped with sat antennas and receivers
  • Stern thrusters

The 88 Domino Super is one of Riva's most prized superyachts to date. Riva has stayed true to all of its values and designed another superstar with Domino. Her sleek, trim profile and luxurious interior details are ones that will impress any superyacht enthusiast. Everything you could want to make your voyage more comfortable and accommodating are found on the Domino. The Domino is currently for sale and it is a yacht, designed for anyone who loves to cruise with speed and style in the same package.

Riva Shipyard

Riva Shipyard was founded in 1842 in Sarnico, Italy when a devastating storm ripped through the area and damaged many of the locals’ boats. One man, Pietro Riva, used his boat building skills and craftsmanship to repair many of the boats which earned him the trust and respect of the locals, which was the start of his own destiny and the longstanding legend of Riva Shipyard.

Riva has moved seamlessly through the decades, creating masterpieces in many different areas of boat building, from speedboats to wooden yachts, and in most recent years, Riva has migrated into superyachts. Riva has also manage to remain true and strong to their unique Italian design and first-class quality through several changes in management and ownership through the years. The latest change was with The Ferretti Group who took over Riva Boatyard on May 1, 2000. Since the acquisition, Riva has developed a broad range of fiberglass yachts that range from 27 to 164 feet. There are currently 15 models and 3 specific product segments used for the superyachts.

One superyacht that has received a lot of attention since its 2015 launch. Riva has every right to brag about this vessel as it exhibits everything imaginable when it comes to luxury, style and performance. The 88 Domino Super is loaded with luxurious comforts and is enhanced with innovative features that have boosted this yacht’s performance level into a revolutionary era of species.

A contemporary legend

riva yacht net worth

In May 2000, Riva became part of Ferretti Group, who restored it to where it is today, at the vanguard of world boating as a recognised icon of fine Italian yachting artistry. This felicitous journey is down to the know-how of the group Engineering department and the sensibility of designer Mauro Micheli, co-founder with Sergio Beretta of Officina Italiana Design, the studio that exclusively designs the whole Riva fleet.

That year also saw the launch of Aquariva, a 33-foot embodiment of the brand DNA that set the tone for the future output – a triumph of élan, innovation and exclusivity encapsulated in a product of revolutionary engineering, reliability and performance. In 2012, Ferretti Group announced a new majority shareholder: Shandong Heavy Industry Group (Weichai Group) of China, a true industrial giant, one of the world’s most important conglomerates in the automotive, commercial vehicles and construction machinery sectors. Weichai’s strength and strategic vision have enabled Riva to make yet another leap forward, with a flow of projects and resources assured for the long term. In 2014, the brand signalled its return to the megayacht sector, with the new Riva Superyachts division. The dream of creating Riva steel and alluminium displacement superyachts is very much inspired by Carlo Riva. His ambition and restless genius spurred him to reach for new horizons, with the celebrated Caravelle and Atlantic series megayachts in the ’60s and ’70s and, from 1970 to 1978, the six over-20-metre motor yachts in the Marco Polo series plus a 90- and a 100-foot Vespucci.

The Riva yard in Sarnico: the timeless atelier

The production yard in Sarnico near Bergamo opened in 1842 on Lake Iseo deep in the Franciacorta area and remains the heartbeat of the Riva story today. This is where it is all made and always has been – from the legendary wooden hulls of the past to the modern 27- to 68-foot yachts.

This was his personal brainchild, from the design to the functional amenities. Known as La Plancia (the bridge), the office stands in the middle of the work shed, its great 40-metre-wide arch borne on two pillars that also support a pair of bridge cranes, each capable of lifting craft weighing in at 20 tons. This architectural masterpiece makes a fine sight, even from the far side of the lake. A listed building, it is officially protected along with the rest of the yard as an environmental heritage treasure. The shipyard spans 36,000 sqm, about 17,000 sqm of it indoors, and boasts 10 moorings, 2 jib cranes, 4 painting cabs and a 50-ton trolley for transporting the finished yachts to the jetty and for handling shells or bulky items.

The Riva yard in La Spezia: the future is now

The La Spezia production facility is a key strategic and industrial hub. Built to extend Riva’s range and production capacity, it became operational in 2004 and is now the group’s technical, logistical and commercial centre of excellence for the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas.

With 13,000 sqm of indoor facilities. These include industrial work sheds and office blocks as well as piers and jetties with a total length of around 400 metres, serviced by a 300-ton wheeled travel-lift. Conceived to champion state-of-the-art production techniques and to build the largest models in the range – from 76- to 130-footers – it is home to the largest centre for testing, launching and delivering yachts in the whole of the Ferretti Group. Owners of yachts by all the group brands can enjoy customer-care and marina services here.

The Riva yard in Ancona: the home of the new Riva Superyachts division

Spanning almost 80,000 sqm (nearly a third of it indoors), the Ancona yard is one of the largest shipbuilding facilities anywhere in Europe. It’s home to the engineering and design team from the Riva Superyachts division, who work closely with designer Mauro Micheli and his colleagues at Officina Italiana Design.

This is where we build the Riva 50m and Riva 54m, masterpieces of advanced technology and attention to detail suffused with the spirit of the brand.

WORTH THE WAIT

About a year ago, Riva gathered marine-industry journalists in Miami and showed a video of an elegant-looking open yacht with a hardtop that rose from the foredeck. Jaws dropped, and “wow ” was heard in all directions. That vision is now reality.

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST ‘OPEN’

When it comes to open yachts, this Riva 88 Florida takes the crown, offering sun, speed and style scaled up to the max. What constitutes an open yacht as opposed to an open cruiser? To me, an open yacht has an open cockpit and not only proper staterooms, but also dedicated crew berths. The next-biggest available on the market is at least 8 feet shorter, which might not sound like a lot, but it translates to a huge amount of extra volume. And, in this case, that extra volume is filled with Riva’s one-of-a-kind styling.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Quite a lot. This model was initially announced as the Domino 88 Open because she is effectively based on Riva’s Domino Super hull. Instead of sporting a flybridge, though, she provides an open-cockpit layout. Next, she was billed pre-launch as the 88 Miami before finally appearing at her Cannes Yachting Festival 2015 world premiere as the 88 Florida. Riva has not used the names Florida and Super Florida since the 1950s and early ’60s.

A ‘SHORE’ THING

Riva is a short word, and the sweeping type style is as beautiful as it is iconic. Translating to “shore” in Italian, it communicates a key brand message: the vital connection to the water. Surprisingly, the appropriateness of the name was just luck: It’s the family name of the yard’s founders. Carlo Riva, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, rocketed the yard to fame and glory during the 1950s on the back of legendary designs like the Aquarama. He was the last in a line of fathers’ sons to manage the family firm since the middle of the 19th century. Legend has it that founder Pietro Riva began repairing storm-damaged fishing boats on Lago Iseo, some 25 miles east of Bergamo in Northern Italy. Indeed, the company claims to have been building boats uninterrupted for longer than any other yard in Italy.

Three plants build the Riva range, from the smallest — the 27-foot Iseo — up to 164-foot custom projects and beyond. The smaller ones are built in Sarnico in northern Italy, while the bigger ones are built in La Spezia on the west coast. The biggest are built by the Ferretti Group’s subsidiary CRN in Ancona, a small city on the east coast.

OUTSIDE PERSPECTIVES

Timeless. Elegant. Racy. Luxurious. These words come to mind when you see the Riva 88 Florida in profile. She’s designed for those who enjoy the salt air, onboard entertaining and an eye-catching design.

CREATIVE HERITAGE

The 88 Florida is billed as the spiritual successor to the open 60 Bahamas, which was built from 1991 to 1998. It was the first Riva to be designed entirely by the hugely talented Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta’s Officina Italiana Design, the studio responsible for the whole modern Riva portfolio. Some of the other, bigger open Rivas include the current 63 Virtus and 52-foot Rivale. Other opens of yesteryear include the 59 Mercurius and 54 Aquarius.

DEFINING FEATURE

The convertible roof system is impossible to miss. Its patented mechanism is ingenious, but it’s not the most discreet piece of engineering. When the cockpit is completely open, the roof stows on the foredeck, where it serves as a cover for a seating area and sun pad. The arms stow cleverly in the superstructure and are out of sight when not needed.

RIVA LA DIFFERENCE …

One thing is certain: Riva knows how to build a good boat. But what makes Riva quality? One thing that impresses me is the way the builder usually paints proprietary equipment to match the hull and deck colors. No jarring hues to distract from exterior-design purity. Minimal visual clutter. No clashing logos. Sat domes, horns, navigation lights, searchlights, antennas — all get taken apart and painted. It’s details like this that set Riva apart. The quality of Riva’s varnishing and lacquering is legendary too, often up to 25 coats. The doorstep of every stateroom has a stainless-steel plate with an engraved Riva logo. It’s a nice touch.

FAVORITE PLACE: OUTSIDE

Sitting on the 88 Florida’s high-low hydraulic platform with your legs in the water. In every way, the experience is a notch up from even the great Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.”

MUST-HAVE EXTRA

Remember that this is a sport yacht. Go for the biggest 2,638 hp MTU 16V 2000 M94 diesels and the 40-plus knots that come with them. The first three Riva 88s had them, and the next three in production will have them as well. Riva claims 40.5 knots as the 88 Florida’s top speed with these power plants, but the builder conservatively quotes top speeds minus a knot or two. When lightly loaded and in the right waters — meaning not too hot — she should deliver a solid 42-plus knots. The optional 2,435 hp MTU diesels provide a quoted 38.5-knot top end, still more than adequate for a yacht with a length overall just short of 90 feet. Either engine choice will give you a maximum 34- to 35-knot cruising speed.

THE FIRST THREE AFLOAT

HULL NO. 1: At the 88 Florida’s debut during the Cannes Yachting Festival, our test boat was resplendent in a metallic “regal silver” livery.

HULL NO. 2: This one was pre-sold and delivered last summer. The second 88 Florida sports an unusual pearlescent-white paint job that can look like anything from slightly blue to slightly purple, depending on how the light hits her hull. Her New York-based owner simply loves the brand. In fact, he’s reported to have bought six or seven new Rivas in recent years and still owns around half of them.

HULL NO. 3: Like the second 88 Florida, the third one was delivered to her owner last summer. This one is metallic gold and gorgeous. We hear on the docks that she will spend her time cruising in tandem with her owner’s 200-foot megayacht.

INSIDE PERSPECTIVES

It’s easy to see and immediately appreciate the striking exterior elements of a yacht like the Riva 88 Florida, but this builder gives equal effort and innovation to the design, layout and features of this vessel’s luxurious interior. When you’re ready to drop the hook and relax, the 88 Florida is ready to cradle you in comfort.

WARM AND SOFT

The first two 88 Floridas had the same general arrangements and veneer choices: oak with what is referred to as an ultra-matte, two-part “rubbery” lacquer. This optional effect is unusual, similar to the soft, velvety skin of a peach. Riva has used it to great effect over the years.

EIGHT GUESTS, FOUR CREW

A layout with four en suite staterooms accommodates up to eight guests on the lower deck. The owner’s stateroom is amidships, just abaft a galley to port and a great lounging area to starboard. The other three guest staterooms are in the forward half of the hull, with the VIP double in the traditional spot up front and the other two abaft it.

OWNER’S PRIVILEGE

The master stateroom feels huge, even for a yacht of this size. The sleeping area doesn’t occupy the full beam, but the en suite is behind sliding doors. With the doors open, you get the full-beam benefit. A shower stall and head have their own flanking doors. Hullside windows enhance the exterior profile, and inside they really wow.

The crew have their own staircase, which is hidden behind what looks like a cupboard door within the cockpit furniture on the port side. A mini-mess and two bunk cabins for up to four crew are down there, plus the engine-room door.

FAVORITE PLACE: INSIDE

The chaise longue to port of the bench-seat helm is a lounger on steroids. There are comfortable cushions, and a good friend will fit here with ease. An abundance of natural light beams through the hullside windows. Metal accents, wood and carpet blend together for a contemporary yet warm feel.
