Palmer Johnson came onto the yachting scene in 1918. Founded by Hans Johnson and Herman Gmack, the brand launched its first yacht, a sailing yacht, in 1926. It began its foray into custom yachts after World War II. In 1961, at Haggarty, founder of Texas Instruments, bought Palmer Johnson and began building aluminum yachts, moving away from the classic wooden yachts of the brand’s past. In 1966, Palmer Johnson made history with the 84-foot (35.6m) ketch FIREBIRD, which at the time was the world’s largest aluminum sailing yacht. By 1979, Palmer Johnson launched FORTUNA, a 100-foot (30.48m) aluminum yacht widely respected as the fastest yacht in the world. This launch solidified Palmer Johnson’s penchant for performance and speed. Throughout the following decades, Palmer Johnson doubled down on its reputation as a luxury yacht builder with a focus on top performance and excellent design. In 2005, Palmer Johnson was the first yacht builder to present a modular production process and 3D engineering of yachts. In 2012, it launched the “SuperSport” series, a line of carbon fiber yachts with a radical, quicker, more effective and more stable hull design. Palmer Johnson has built more than 200 yachts that are still afloat today. TURMOIL was the first explorer yacht built by the brand; she has circumnavigated the globe three times. FIREBIRD for sale

FIREBIRD, named after the Firebird Opera by Stravinsky, was built as a classic world cruising yacht with exceptional Palmer Johnson pedigree. At the time of her launch in 1966, FIREBIRD became the largest aluminum sailing yacht in the world. She boasts an impressive record of three circumnavigations, including voyages to the Antarctic and Arctic regions. FIREBIRD offers easy handling with roller furling sails and a deep keel for stability. In 2007, her mast was removed and inspected, and a full service of components and furlers was performed.

This Palmer Johnson 84 Ketch started her refit program in 2015 that continues for five years. This over $1 million refit included an incredible full teak interior refresh that revolutionized the yacht. The craftsmanship demonstrated on her interior is a work of art that isn’t seen on yachts in this day and age. FIREBIRD is a beautiful example of tradition combined with a modern elegance that will amaze guests as they take the time to admire the intricate detailing.

Stepping down from the center cockpit is the pilothouse and navigation table in a protected setting. Opening portholes and a semi-circular sofa make this a dry, safe haven should you find yourself in inclement conditions. Stepping down further, you will enter the stunning main salon and galley. The open-concept design allows guests to move about easily and enjoy conversation from any area of the salon. The teak detailing is conspicuous, adorning every corner of the interior. There are two seating areas, with the portside area convertible to a daybed/sea berth. Forward of the salon is a guest cabin, and further forward is crew accommodations.

FIREBIRD’s versatile guest accommodation layout allows for up to nine total guests when the salon daybed is used. The master suite features a queen-size bed and is accessed via a private staircase. The master suite opens to the aft leisure cockpit, which acts as a private space for guests to enjoy. The port guest stateroom contains two single bunks and plenty of storage space. Forward is the crew accommodations, which feature three berths, a double and two singles. En-suite bathrooms accompany each cabin, ensuring guests maintain privacy during their time onboard.

The Palmer Johnson’s exterior design is purposeful, classic and elegant. She showcases a gently rising sheerline, high bow and canoe stern typical of a real ocean-going yacht. FIREBIRD will turn heads at any marina, welcoming onlookers to admire her expertly constructed exterior. The yacht’s pure and straightforward decks ensure an uncluttered atmosphere. Her center cockpit is deep and well-protected and is a safe space to be in while underway. The leisure cockpit aft is a lovely area with wrap-around seating that follows the shape of the canoe stern. Guests can enjoy the alfresco lifestyle and watch the passing scenery of the cruising grounds. The extended hardtop from the pilothouse and the awning over the aft leisure cockpit offer shade when underway. At anchor, three more awnings create a huge shaded main deck with space for lounge chairs, a hammock and an 8’ dining table.

LADY J accommodates up to 12 guests in five staterooms. LADY J is configured with a king master stateroom, two queen staterooms, and two twin staterooms with trundles. For guest flexibility, the two twin staterooms are convertible to King-sized beds. Each stateroom boasts luxurious soft goods and linens. Every guest stateroom has a full entertainment system that includes flat screen TV/DVD/CD and IPOD connections, full time internet connection with WiFi, generous storage, and en-suite bathrooms, including a shower and tub.

The spacious and private master stateroom is full beam and located on the main deck. Upon entering through the owner's office to starboard one will find a desk, multiple hanging lockers and a small drinks refrigerator. Continuing forward through the private office, one reaches the master stateroom with king size bed, large sofa to starboard and her vanity to port. Additional hanging locker storage, a TV and entertainment system are found on the aft wall in front of the bed. His and her bathrooms have separate showers, separate toilet/bidet areas and a large Jacuzzi tub.

Down a beautiful spiral staircase is the marble guest foyer, leading to four well-appointed guest staterooms.

The forward guest staterooms are identical with twin berths and trundles, entertainment centers, hanging lockers, and ensuite heads with shower and bath. The starboard guest stateroom provides service access to the crew area. Each of these twin staterooms are easily converted to King-sized beds to accommodate a wider variety of guest needs.

Further aft are two identical guest staterooms, each with queen size berths, entertainment centers, hanging lockers, and en-suite bathrooms with shower and bath.

All guest staterooms have ample storage, hanging closets, and vanity/desk area.

Hull, superstructure, tanks and rub rail are constructed of aluminum alloy. The beautiful teak decks have all been replaced under the current ownership.

LADY J was always one of the best boats to ever come out of the world renowned Palmer Johnson Yard. She has an enduring interior and has been continually upgraded. The biggest upgrade recently was the new Caterpillar C32 engines and ZF transmissions, but the overall maintenance schedule has assured that LADY J is always ready for her owner or charter guests to enjoy.
