Drawing of Sabre 42

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Outnumbered, Sabre 42′

“We really enjoy the comfort the boat provides while cruising. Being able to have shore power, a full shower, and extra room to bring along friends is fantastic.”

Sabre, 42’— Outnumbered

Interview with the Captain—Jeff Given

Why did you choose to buy a Sabre? My prior boat was a Sabre 34 Mk1. Growing up in Maine, I was always drawn to the line of boats.  I really enjoy the classic look in addition to how well they sail.

What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this particular model (and how did they compare)? In 2019, I was looking to get something a bit larger than the Sabre 34 and with a few more modern features. I was pretty focused on staying with a Sabre but did look at a Morris yacht and a J40.

How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s history if you know it)? We spent the early winter of 2020 looking at available boats around the area with our boat broker. This one happened to be listed in Manchester, MA. The boat owner resided in Toronto and had owned it since around 2009. He had it shipped down to Manchester to sell it.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add? So far we have replaced the electronics, cushions, awl gripped the hull, had the sole refinished, and had the brightwork redone.   The next project will be replacing the keel. The keel is a winglet keel where the winglets were removed after getting stuck under rocks by the prior owner.

What are the features you like most about your boat?   The list is so long, it is hard to know where to start. We really enjoy the comfort the boat provides while cruising. Being able to have shore power, a full shower, and extra room to bring along friends is fantastic.

Who first introduced you to boating/sailing? I grew up boating on lakes in Maine, but was a power boater. In 2005, I decided to take sailing lessons at the Boston Sailing Center. I really enjoyed it so the next season we went out and bought our Sabre 34, Whitecap.

Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating/sailing organizations? We belong to the Corinthian Yacht Club

What boats have you previously owned Prior to this boat, I owned a ’24 Cruisers power boat and a Sabre 34 Mk1

How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go? We typically sail around Mass Bay and enjoy doing a few overnight trips each year.

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat? The biggest challenge is righting the check …

Do you have any notable boating resources you use? I have joined the  Sabre Sailboat group on groups.io   to keep in touch with other owners.  The other resource I use is Practical Sailor .

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Sabre like yours? My biggest piece of advice would be to think about how you will use the boat in the short term and how you may use it in the future. It is a process to sell and purchase a boat so thinking about how boating may change and when it could change is important.  While one doesn’t want to buy a boat bigger then what they need, you also don’t want to have to turn around and upgrade a boat in 3 or 4 years.

What’s the story behind the boat’s name? I have a wife and 2 daughters so I am always Outnumbered.

The Sabre 42 is a 41.75ft masthead sloop designed by Roger Hewson and built in fiberglass by Sabre Yachts (USA) between 1987 and 1989.

62 units have been built..

The Sabre 42 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally small. There is a good water supply range.

1987 Sabre 42 Centerboard

1987 Sabre 42 Centerboard

Pensacola, Florida

Model 42 Centerboard

1987 Sabre 42 Centerboard Sabre sailing yachts are designed for high load carrying capacity, and stability is achieved both by hull form and by high ballast-to-displacement ratios. Efficient lead keels provide excellent lift and performance characteristics as well as close upwind pointing angles. Sail plans offer the optimum balance of light air performance and heavy weather stability.  The 42 keel/centerboard draws only 4'9' with the board up and 8'6" with the board down. Sabre sailing yachts are not wet race boats, nor are they heavy displacement “tanks”: they are comfortable, fast and highly refined yachts, fun to sail and a pleasure to own.

The Sabre 42 Flybridge is the outcome of discussions with our clients and prospective clients. These conversations have led us to create a yacht which offers the same levels of personal luxury and comfort that they have come to expect in their homes and in their automobiles. We have developed a yacht with both lower and upper helms, that permits owners to operate from the comfort of the yacht’s interior or from the openness of her flybridge. Technology is advancing rapidly and our owners have come to expect that when there is a new technology available, Sabre will employ it in all new designs.

We have dramatically changed the way we build our yachts and the way in which they are propelled. Traditional values such as fine craftsmanship and great looks remain, as our owners have come to expect, but below the elegant surfaces, things are state-of-art. In our fiberglass shop we have changed to infusion molding. The process is greener in that it uses considerably less resin, and is cleaner in that the emissions levels are much lower. Less resin means less weight, allowing the hull to run faster and use less fuel. Infusion differs from traditional hand lay-up in that all materials are loaded dry into the mold in a stack, which is then covered with a plastic bag to allow the resin to be infused. This creates a stronger part with higher glass to resin ratios.

The Sabre 42 Flybridge uses Zeus pod drives. Smaller engines using vectored thrust propel the boat at higher speeds using less fuel. And when maneuvering in tight spaces a joy stick gives increased confidence to the operator.

Entering from the aft cockpit through a hinged door, the elegance of this Sedan's interior is immediately evident. Hand-crafted cherry joinery is everywhere you look, and the cabin soles are teak and holly throughout. Large windows on all four sides not only make the salon bright and airy but provide excellent exterior visibility. The Salon has an L-Shaped settee along the aft and port side also pulls out to convert to a double-berth, if additional sleeping capacity is needed. Facing the settee is a nice hi-lo, drop-leaf table. Forward of the settee is a cabinet with storage while the large top - perfect to use as a Chart Table. In the Salon's aft starboard corner is a comfortable chair. Forward of that is a built-in cherry angled cabinet with a concealed wine cooler/refrigerator. Further forward is the starboard side complete Helm Station with Helm Seat. A Starboard aluminum sliding door leads out to the side deck. Forward of the Galley is the portside Head compartment. Manufacturer Provided Description

At Sabre Yachts our goal has always been to fulfill the dreams and wishes of our boat owners by listening carefully to their requests and blending their ideas into exciting designs. We consider our owners and potential owners to be valued members of the Sabre Design Team. The Sabre 42 is the result of our observation that our clients want to enjoy the same levels of personal luxury and comfort that they have come to expect in their homes and in their automobiles. To that end we have developed a style of sedan, available with or without fly bridge, that permits boaters to operate from the comfort of the yacht's interior or from the openness of an optional fly bridge. Technology is advancing rapidly and our owners have come to expect that if there is a new technology available, we will employ it in our designs. We have dramatically changed the way we build our yachts and the way in which they are propelled. Traditional values such as fine craftsmanship and great looks remain, as our owners have come to expect, but below the surface things are state-of-the-art.In our fiberglass shop we have changed infusion molding. It is greener in the sense that it uses considerably less resin and cleaner in that the emissions levels are much lower. It's lighter because we use less resin and that allows the hull to run faster and use less fuel. Infusion differs from traditional hand lay-up in that all materials are loaded dry into the mold in a stack, the stack is then covered with a plastic bag and resin is infused into the stack. This creates a stronger part with higher glass to resin ratios. With Zeus Pod everything has changed and nothing remains the same. The smaller engines using vectored thrust propel the boat at higher speeds using less fuel. And when maneuvering in tight spaces a joy stick makes child's play of docking.

Shelter from the Storm

A coastal view of Guam National Wildlife Refuge that overlooks the ocean. The land is covered in lush, green plant live. The clouds paint a grey hue across the sky where it meets the ocean in the distance.

On May 24, 2023, Typhoon Mawar struck Guam.

The storm hit the island with 140 mph winds knocking out power and flooding buildings. A rain gauge in Dededo measured 28.42 inches of rain, most of which fell within three hours. Although Typhoon Mawar was the strongest storm to hit the island in 20 years, boats tied to moorings in Guam’s Harbor of Refuge were safe and sheltered from the storm.

Just one month earlier, the Port Authority of Guam completed a multi-year renovation project to repair the harbor. In partnership with the Guam Department of Agriculture’s Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources, and with the help of Boating Infrastructure Grant funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the port fixed the moorings just in time for the typhoon.

Satellite view of massive swirling storm over mostly ocean.

“The whole intention of the Harbor of Refuge is for boats to be able to seek shelter during a storm,” Dora Perez, a planner with the Port Authority of Guam said. “It's a multi-use facility, and the primary use of the refuge is for safety of boaters during a storm.”

Perez started working for the Port Authority of Guam in 1989 as a clerk. Born and raised in Guam, she ascended the agency’s ranks until she became a planner in the port’s strategic planning division. Perez derives the most satisfaction from seeing how her projects benefit the community.

“Our projects are tangible,” Perez said. “When you walk on the docks, you just feel so good because it’s for the community.”

Picture of a man standing on a dock at Guam's Harbor of Refuge. There are boats in the background on the water.

The harbor has 48 moorings that are open to a variety of boat types and sizes. Partnership funds from the Boating Infrastructure Grant program support tie-ups for recreational transient vessels more than 26 feet in length. While the primary use of the Harbor of Refuge is to provide a place where boats can shelter from the storms that frequently strike Guam during typhoon season, it’s also available for short-term boat parking.

Having a safe and functional harbor also provides conservation benefits. Tying up to a mooring instead of dropping an anchor protects fragile corals, reduces impacts on marine plants and animals, and curtails pollution.

“By ensuring that the boats are safely anchored, it helps maintain the health and biodiversity of the marine ecosystem,” Perez said. “A well-maintained moorage area reduces the impact of human activity on marine life and habitats.”

The project’s success was attributable to the Office of the Governor’s Marine Conservation Plan and the Guam Department of Agriculture’s Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources.

"Our agency's partnership with the Port Authority of Guam has been invaluable with completing infrastructure projects to benefit the boating community,” Jay Gutierrez, Guam Department of Agriculture's Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources Chief, said. “Having a safe area to moor will ensure that boats and the environment are protected, especially during storms.”

A picture of an underwater mooring in Guam's Harbor of Refuge. There are chains holding down a block of cement, and a sign on the cement labeling the block as in need of repair.

The Boating Infrastructure Grant program was established in 1998 and is administrated by the Service’s Office of Conservation Investment. The program provides funding to states to improve access to the historic, cultural, recreational, scenic, and natural resources within the U.S. for large boats. The grants have supported projects designed to strengthen local community ties to boaters and marine manufacturers, raise awareness about the economic benefits of recreational boating, promote partnerships, provide continuity of access to coastal communities, and provide areas of safe harbor. Funds from this program have expanded opportunities for boating and water-related recreation and the communities these activities support.

“The partnership between Guam's Department of Agriculture and the Port Authority of Guam is a very effective collaboration,” Ruth Utzurrum, Service wildlife biologist and grants manager said. “They’ve done a great job with building infrastructure that provides boaters and the community with safe places to tie up, and access to recreational opportunities that also benefit conservation. The Harbor of Refuge renovation is the result of a very highly complementary, effective, and mutually beneficial partnership.”

The next phase of renovation includes adding a convenience dock and gangway. For now, the harbor is open – for the community, and beyond.

The bodies of 4 women have been found in a migrant-type boat off Spain’s Mediterranean coast

  • Copy Link copied

MADRID (AP) — The bodies of four women have been found in a rubber-dinghy boat off the coast of southeast Spain, authorities said Friday.

The government office in the southeast city of Murcia said the boat was towed by marine rescue services to the port of Cartagena early Friday after being spotted by coast guards.

It said the women appeared to be of North African origin and may have been migrants trying to reach Spain. Migrants regularly use such boats to reach Spain from northwest Africa.

Autopsies are to be held to establish the cause of death, the office said.

No other occupants were found in the boat and it was not immediately known if there had been any beforehand.

Tens of thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan countries fleeing poverty, conflict and instability in West Africa try to reach Spain each year by boat. Most go in large open vessels to the Canary Islands in the Atlantic , while others from Morocco , Algeria and Middle Eastern countries try to cross the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean to mainland Spain. Several thousand die making the hazardous journey.

The Interior Ministry says 15, 351 migrants arrived in Spain by boat between Jan. 1 and Mar. 31, up by more than 4,000 in the same period last year. The vast majority arrived on the Canary Island route.
