Weston Bay Yacht Club official re-opening

  • April 18, 2015

Weston Bay Yacht Club

Weston Bay Yacht Club

At noon, on Saturday 18 April, the new facilities at the Weston Bay Yacht Club will be officially opened by the Mayor of Weston super Mare.

WBYC received a grant from ‘Sport England’ to add an extension to the Clubhouse for changing rooms, showers and toilets, and a training room. This work is now complete and ready for use.

At the same time, the existing areas have been remodelled and renovated to create a better space for social events and meetings.

The club is opening up its focus from a traditional yacht club, offering some of the cheapest mooring facilities, to become the home for all ‘wind and water’ sports in the Weston Bay area.

Weston Bay Yacht Club is on Facebook , and at wbyc.co.uk .

Weston Super Mare Pilot Gig Club

WELCOME TO WESTON GIG CLUB

We are a Cornish Pilot Gig rowing club in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset. Weston’s Gig Club has charitable status and first hit the water in the summer of 2022 in a gig called Walter Hicks. Walter – which also has the sponsor’s name ‘Korev’ on her side if you’re looking out for us on the water – was loaned to us by the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (the CPGA) for a year as part of a scheme to help new gig clubs get off the ground. With over 40 members seemingly overnight, get off the ground and onto the water we did! There’s strength in numbers and we continue to have almost 40 members including many new faces as we head into our second year on the water.

Want to support our charitable club?

Though this year’s key fundraiser is now complete, we are a charitable sporting organisation with a community focus, so are always keen to speak to individuals or businesses that might be keen to support, sponsor, or get involved with the club. If you have any interest in rowing with or supporting Weston’s gig club, please email us today . Find our Go Fund Me page here . Cornish Pilot Gig rowing is a thriving sport that’s popular with people of all ages for it combines exercise with fun. There are neighbouring clubs in Clevedon, Portishead, Burnham-on-Sea, Bristol, Combwich and Clifton, and there’s a lively scene with regular friendly regattas and rowing events. In Uphill there are sheltered rowing opportunities directly onto the river Axe, with open-water rowing also possible out in the sea of Weston Bay with beach launches and landings possible. Visiting clubs have all loved the rowing here and we hope to welcome and host many more clubs and events as the years go on. We had an incredible first summer season out on the waters of Weston Bay and are now taking stock and starting to think ahead to late 2023 and to the World Championships in 2024, held on the Isles of Scilly each spring (normally over the first May bank holiday – in 2024 they’ll run from 3-5 May). Membership You are welcome to apply to become members of the club. We have around 40 members as at autumn 2023, with three boats almost at our disposal; our wooden boat (which you helped us name Weston Spirit) arrives in October 2023. We need to grow gradually to ensure that everyone has decent rowing opportunities, which means we might not be able to take new members at all times. If we can’t accept you immediately, we’ll get in touch anyway and will answer any questions you might have and will keep your details and contact you again when we’re ready to accept more members. Visit our Membership and FAQ members for more information. Please note that we are a sports club like many others, and that everything happens due to volunteers stepping up to help make them happen. The more members get involved (volunteering to organise rows, joining committees or working groups, coxing sessions/ developing your coxing skills), the more rows we’ll be able to put out. Experience gigging: sit in the ‘pilot’ seat In addition to the six rowers’ seats and the cox, there’s also what’s called a pilot seat in a gig in the bow of the boat (the pointy end at the front). If you’re keen to come and see what it’s all about, let us know and we’ll be able to organise for you to sit in the pilot seat (a non-rowing position) for a session. Warning: you might get hooked. Thanks for your interest in Weston Gig Club, see you on the water soon.

Where we are (most of the time)

We don’t have a set base (yet) but often row from the mouth of the River Axe, near the Weston Bay Yacht Club building.

After the fire: St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club focused on revitalizing this coming summer

P ANAMA CITY — In November, the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club building on Bunkers Cove Road was destroyed in a fire. Ever since then, questions have circulated around the community: How did the fire start? Would the Yacht Club rebuild?

The Yacht Club was up and operational for business within weeks of the fire. The Yacht Club is still taking in new members, as well. Members have joined the club even after the fire.

”The Yacht Club is in better shape than people would have imagined,” said Michael Wynn, 2024 commodore. “The staff members that we have are family to us. We believe and give to them and they give back to us.”

Wynn explained that one club member had this to say after the fire: “The clubhouse was just a building; the Yacht Club is about the people.”

The Yacht Club has discussed expanding its sailing center to provide greater resources for the community. The club expects the plans and renderings for the new club facility will be unveiled this summer.

Some of the staff members have left the club since the incident and others have stayed.

“Our staff is smaller now since the fire,” said Wynn. “We have less services being offered at the moment, but many staffers who left the club for other jobs have offered to come back once the club becomes (fully) operational again.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown. There have been different ideas and theories on how the fire started, but there has not been a definitive answer. But there was no foul play, Wynn emphasized.

”Right now, we don’t have a final number on what it’s going to cost to rebuild,” said Wynn. “We have architects and plans on rebuilding. We have members of the community who are donating services to help cut the cost (of our rebuild).”

More information about the club will be released closer to the clubhouse reopening. Wynn said the rebuild will both honor the club's history and heritage and also add modern touches.

Previous coverage: More details released as Panama City monitors St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club fire site

Wynn said the club's experience dealing with insurance after the fire has been good and the matter soon will be resolved. The experience was much better than the ones many people had after Hurricane Michael, he noted.

Wynn also is humbled and gratified by the outpouring of support and dedication from his fellow club leaders and all club members. He knew his one-year term as commodore, which began in January, would be full of challenges. But the club has rallied because the tradition and legacy mean so much.

"People care so deeply," he said.
