Galeon’s 640 Fly Passes the Test

Galeon, which is headquartered in Gdansk, Poland, has been churning out highly innovative yachts since its founding in 1982. Currently, it builds about 100 boats per year in the 40- to 70-foot range, and has cultivated a loyal following thanks to high build quality and layout schemes that are simply smart. The 640 Fly, which debuted this past February in Miami , is right in line with the Galeon business model . She provides a seaworthy ride coupled with some cool design details that should keep boaters happy.

The 640 Fly has an LOA of 68 feet, 3 inches, and a “resting” beam of 16 feet, 3 inches. The term resting is key here since the boat has flip-down terraces that expand her breadth to 23 feet, 3 inches. That’s more like the beam you’d see on a 90 footer. There’s an outdoor bar for two to port, and lounge seating on the starboard terrace. The terraces adjoin to the cockpit, which has a dining settee for eight as well as a 40-inch television. The cockpit also has an electric sunshade to offer respite from the sun’s rays. A hydraulic swim platform aft of that handles tender duties, and can also act as a miniature beach club should you want to go for a swim. Access to the crew quarters is through the swim platform. That cabin offers twin berths, a refrigerator, sink and engine-room access.

The salon houses an L-shaped dining settee to port, which is across from the galley. Forward of that are two helm chairs, where the captain will enjoy excellent sightlines thanks to the boat’s large windows. The forward section of the windshield opens up to create a passage way to the bowdeck, meaning that the entire main deck of the yacht can essentially become one, making for an epic party platform.

Down below, the accommodations level can be configured with either three or four staterooms. If the three-stateroom layout is chosen, the master is full beam and amidships. If the four-stateroom layout is the plan, the master moves to the forepeak.

The boat’s namesake flybridge is relatively large for a vessel in this class, and has a helm station, U-shaped seating aft and a two-person wetbar to starboard. It’s everything you need to have an excellent time up top.

The Galeon 640 Fly is powered by either twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta D13s or twin 1,200 hp Man diesels. With the Volvos, she tops out at 27 knots and can cruise at 23 knots for 230 nautical miles — enough to get you from South Florida to the Bahamas with ease, where you can drop the hook, drop the terraces and relax to the fullest. (Update February 20, 2019: Following our sea trial, Galeon made some hull modifications, including adding some rocker into the design. The builder reports that the 640 Fly now makes a 25-knot cruise and 30-knot top-end with the Volvo Penta D13 diesels.)

Description

The Galeon 640 FLY was presented in the summer of 2018 at the Cannes Film Festival, and in January 2019 became the leader in the European Yacht of the Year category at an exhibition in Dusseldorf. The ship was designed by the shipyard’s design bureau, in collaboration with renowned designer Tony Castro. The yacht received extensive panoramic glazing of the entire cabin, a spacious flybridge with a full control post and a shaded terrace in the stern of the vessel. The interior is decorated with teak in light tones, which is why the interior space is visually increased.

The spacious flybridge features a sunbathing area, dining area and a small bar. From the terrace you can go down to the swimming platform, which provides safe access to water. And having expanded the bulwark and having formed two small balconies, you can easily expand the main deck. The lounge has a spacious seating area, a large dining table, and a full kitchen with stove, oven and storage space for food stocks. On the lower deck are three guest cabins, with wide double beds and large windows. The crew’s double cabin is located in the stern of the vessel and is equipped with a separate bathroom.

Two MAN diesel engines are installed on the yacht, each with a capacity of 1,100 hp. Galeon 640 FLY is capable of speeds of 35 knots, while cruising speed is 28 knots. At cruising speed and with a full fuel tank with a capacity of 2500 liters - the ship can go more than 300 nautical miles. The yacht is intended for access to the open sea, as evidenced by its classification - B.Sea Craft.

The Galeon 640 Fly is a Euro style motor yacht with many unique features. From the very large flybridge with factory hardtop to the spacious cockpit, "drop down side decks", foredeck seating/tables and hydraulic swim platform.

The three stateroom layout below with three separate head compartments each with shower stalls allows for three couples to cruise in comfort and privacy. The main deck has the lower station to starboard, huge U-shaped dinette to port and a large aft galley to port.

This transformer yacht will revolutionize the segment with its innovative approach to layout and space distribution. This transformer model will follow a new design path to allow for bigger volume and better space distribution, all while maintaining the great exterior appearance Galeon models are known for.

Outside, the aft cockpit dining area holds eight people who can enjoy an entertainment system with a 40 inch TV sliding up from the kitchen top, all while protected from the elements by the electric aft sunshade. Further back, find the hydraulic bath platform capable of handling all water paraphernalia and a convenient access to a large skipper cabin.

The top deck is enlarged to offer a generous dining space, a full-sized bar and plenty of lounge space surrounding the steering console. The bow deck area can be approached by the revolutionary, electric front window entrance revealing two separate movable sofas with integrated foldable tables for sundeck purpose. Serve the area from a nearby wine bar to further impress your guests. Everyone’s favorite Beach Mode makes a welcome reappearance, fitted with six meter long balconies with partially glazed floors and a breakfast bar on both sides.

Equip the cockpit area with a rotating sofa option with a 3,2 m tender garage below to completely separate your yacht from the pack. Inside find extensive lounge and dinner areas with openable side windows next to the bar and steering station. Thanks to the innovatory, two-way stair system, a three full-beam cabin layout was made possible for extra privacy and comfort. A four cabin layout is sure to please enlarged families and charter enthusiasts.
