company History

the Most known Builder of wooden, or >classic, the boatbuilding industry was founded by designer and sailor Sean McMillan in 1993. It was his second attempt to do business. A year earlier, the Bank withdrew the entire startup McMillan Yachts , and along with housing Sean.

In the room of the old farm in Suffolk Sean and his partner Mick Newman made the first Spirit 37 . She impressed the connoisseurs of elegance and speed.

the Founders of Spirit Yachts were inspired by the classic boat 1930 , with the use of modern technologies of wood processing and forming blocks.

Even with orders, Macmillan and Nyman never left the farm, while their life is not forced. In 2003, Spirit Yachts has started to build 70 ft , which just did not fit in the old hangar. According to another version, the police asked the workers to find another place noise. The new building of the shipyard was the Old Wet Dock in the centre Ipswich .

worldwide fame with Spirit Yachts have received with the release of the 2006 film "Casino Royale "where James bond walked on the Grand canal Venice the elegant Spirit 54 . After filming, the boat was immediately sold, and Spirit Yachts was able to prove that classic never goes out of fashion.

In 2007, Spirit Yachts have built the first fully wooden 100 ft boat Gaia. The yacht was so beautiful and fast that it is now laid her increased 111-foot version.

company Status

the Crisis of 2008 was a test for Spirit Yachts. But the company managed to survive and even to get a British award for achievements in entrepreneurship.

Manufacturing

the Shipyard Spirit Yachts is Ipswich Haven Marina . The area of the yard is 1500 sq m. the production employs about 60 people.

exclusive Spirit Yachts builds sailing yachts from 11 to 30 m in length, entirely of wood. Model range divided into line Classic, Deckhouse and Cruising. Are separately superyacht Spirit of 100 or more feet. Every boat, and all of them built more than 60, is a work of art, with a corresponding cost.

Motorboats Spirit are the object of reverence of fans. Boats Spirit even more rare than sailboats, therefore, the secondary market for them is a real hunt. Exclusive offer from Spirit Yachts can be considered their projects to The Royale and Spirit P70 — motor yacht of the highest quality.

In 2018, Spirit Yachts celebrated 25th anniversary victories in regattas and the laying of the first sailing boats with a hybrid power plant. Yacht Spirit 111 >has a 4-BMWi batteries that are charged while driving under the sails.

the Name of wood, which are made of body, Spirit Yachts, sound like music. It is Oregon pine, Sapele, cylindrical, Cuban mahogany, natkanski cypress. The interior is used teak. Boat work light and fast, for example, Spirit 46 speeds up to 20 knots.

a Passionate yachtsman Sean McMillan believes sailing race Yachts the philosophy of Spirit, and therefore his own Spirit 52' Flight of Ufford is constantly on the start of the next "classic" regatta. Here, McMillan draws inspiration and ideas for projects, because Spirit Yachts are not attracted to third-party designers.

Spirit 65DH, SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE

Spirit 65DH, SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE 1

Broker’s Comments

The special thing about what we do at the Berthon Sales Group is that we are trusted with the marketing and sale of so many incredible yachts! Occasionally, we are asked to handle a yacht that tugs on the heartstrings and which is so special in so many respects that she makes the heart sing. Spirit 65DH SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE is one such yacht.

Essentially a new yacht – she was first commissioned in 2021. Her first overnight voyage was from the East Coast of the UK, to our shipyard on the Solent. All Spirit Yachts look amazing. Spirit 65DH, SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE at 65 feet carries her deck saloon beautifully and her fine ends and elegant transom really work. Her spirit of tradition and good looks belie the modern technology that has been used to ensure that she is truly carbon neutral. Twin electric motors, sustainable Lignia decks and soleboards, and the intelligent use of lithium ion batteries to power her systems, regenerated by her variable pitch sail drives. Her on-board 48v generator is for back up only. Of course, her primary propulsion are her sails and here she is fast, easily sailed and very responsive.

On deck and down below, she has been hand crafted throughout, with a comfortable cockpit and charming deck saloon which is a great place for watch keeping when in open water.

Possibly SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE’s biggest surprise is her main saloon, which is an uncompromising and proper living space with a large natural zinc galley counter and 4 bar stools in stainless steel. The galley also has a Barista coffee machine and grinder in addition to the refrigeration, storage and cooker you would expect. Two easy chairs and a sofa complete the picture all executed in Harris Tweed and Galveston leather from Tetrad. The forward bulkhead holds custom storage for her full set of mythical creatures collection of crockery by Wedgewood.

Forward is a generous en-suite owner’s cabin with a further double berthed cabin and upper and lower berthed cabin with a separate heads aft of the main saloon.

Every detail in the construction and fit out of SPIRIT OF JOSPEHINE has been carefully considered in order to make this special yacht not just beautiful and kind to the planet, but practical, easy to handle shorthanded and capable of passage making in security and comfort. She is quite simply, unique.

£2.25 Million Yacht Tour : 2021 Spirit 65DH

Owner’s Comments

I have much enjoyed the experience of specifying and building Spirit 65DH SPIRIT OF JOSPEHINE. I have always sailed but our previous yachts have been more production orientated. Therefore, the opportunity to work with Spirt Yachts to produce a yacht that is close to carbon neutral, bespoke and beautiful has been a privilege. She sails beautifully and is easy to handle and to look after. The Awlwood system used to protect the solid mahogany brightwork lasts for up to 10 years. SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE has a full set of covers for when not in use. For us, knowing that the ongoing maintenance was containable/manageable – was key in our decision to commission the yacht’s build.

Spirit Yachts – Comments

The Spirit 65DH (Deckhouse) was designed by Spirit Yachts to fulfil a couple’s dream of cruising in the UK, Mediterranean and Caribbean. The brief from the owners was to create a beautiful yet practical cruising yacht that leaves minimal impact on the environment. Family life is at the focal point of the Spirit 65DH, with an open plan galley and breakfast bar designed to emulate the owners’ kitchen at home. Personal touches continue throughout the interior making the Spirit 65DH a true ‘home from home’ yacht for her owners and their children.

The 65DH has a Bermudan sloop rig with carbon spars, nitronic rod rigging and 4T FORTE™ recyclable sails from OneSails. The yacht has eco features throughout and includes twin Oceanvolt variable pitch sail drives, which will regenerate 21kW Lithium Valance batteries. A Fischer Panda 48v generator has been installed as a backup if required. On deck, all controls are within easy reach in the cockpit, running rigging is led aft, and Lewmar electric winches have been fitted to facilitate short-handed bluewater cruising. Large lazarette lockers in the stern provide plenty of storage for diving and watersports equipment, as well as an inflatable tender with Torqeedo electric outboard. A deck socket and crane with accompanying winch has been fitted for easy launch and recovery of the tender.

Smooth and sustainable Lignia decking gives way to the raised Sipo Mahogany coachroof, which forms the deckhouse section of the yacht. With panel windows on every side and 360-degree views of the horizon, the deckhouse doubles as an interior navigation station with Raymarine instruments and a guest seating area.

Down below, the natural upholstery colours selected by the owners complement the walnut cabinetry and exposed Sipo Mahogany ringframes. White timber bulkheads and deckheads retain a light and elegant feel throughout the interior.

Upon descending from the deckhouse, passing a starboard-side Pullman cabin, the interior reveals an open plan galley and saloon. Unlike many Spirits, the 65DH has a breakfast bar with high stools incorporated into the galley, which serves as the dining area. The galley is well-equipped for long distance passages and cruising in style with a fridge, freezer, four-hob electric oven, dishwasher, filtered drinking water tap and coffee machine.

Forward of the galley is a lounge-style saloon with an L-shaped sofa to port, which faces two Chesterfield armchairs on the starboard side.

Aft of the galley, on the port side, is a double cabin with accompanying head comprising an electric flushing toilet, basin and rain shower.

Situated forward of the saloon is the en-suite master cabin. A double bed with steps either side and storage drawers underneath is complemented by a starboard-side table with integrated storage compartment and mirror.

The port-side en-suite comprises an electric flushing toilet, basin and rain shower.

LED lighting, air conditioning and USB ports throughout complete this spacious interior designed to have all the comforts of home.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN: SPIRIT NO.1 FOR SALE

The first spirit.

The very first Spirit yacht to be built, a Spirit 37, is now for sale. She was sold at Düsseldorf Boat Show on 24st January in 1995, which also happened to be the birthday of her new German owner, Hans Dirk Rübcke. After nearly a quarter of a century of enjoyment, her owner is ready to give up the helm. We caught up with Hans to find out what attracted him to Spirit no. 1, his experiences onboard over the years and what she offers a new owner.

“I have always been a sailor, and back in 1995 I was a member of Seeshaupt sailing club (on Starnberger Lake in Germany) and a mooring became available. I went to Düsseldorf wanting to buy a Dragon. Once at the show, I found a beautiful 1920 Swiss-built Lacustre yacht, which was elegant, slightly longer than the Dragon and very fast in low winds. I was very tempted to buy the Lacustre. There is a big fleet of these yachts and they do a lot of regattas; racing was of interest for me.”

Walking around the show contemplating his new purchase, the German sailor and lover of long, classic, clean lines wasn’t expecting what he saw around the next corner…

“I suddenly saw a very elegant yacht with lovely classic lines. It was Spirit Yachts’ hull no. 1; I was very surprised, I had never heard of the company before, but I was immediately interested. I went onboard the boat and saw the beautiful, detailed craftsmanship and technical details. I then lay down in the forepeak to test the length of the bunk because I am 6ft 5” (1.94m). I had my feet in the bow end and I could lie down and look up out of the hatch, and I thought ‘fantastic it is long enough for me!’. I was imagining being on the lake at home, lying down looking up at the sky; I was very surprised and delighted to have found this. I knew that she was the right boat for me, and I forgot about the Dragon and the Lacustre.”

Spirit co-founders Sean McMillan and Mick Newman then invited Hans to Suffolk, the home of Spirit Yachts, for a sail and the handover.

“I felt like a king, sitting on the boat, going down the River Orwell; everything was fantastic.”

Over the past 24 years of ownership, Spirit hull no.1 has been wintered at Seeshaupt, near Munich. During the summers, she was sailed on the nearby Starnberger Lake.

Hans recalled some of his happiest times onboard, “I have loved sailing her in all conditions, but especially in strong winds. One particularly special time, that I enjoyed very much, was when we were sailing in 32-34 knots, and the yacht suddenly went from 8.5 knots up to 12.5 knots. I felt like I had a motor on the back of the boat, it was unbelievable. Mick and Sean had previously told me they also got up to 12 knots on the River Orwell, which I had never really believed but then I found out for myself!”

“A funny, but not so happy memory, was when the yacht first came to Germany from Suffolk. I had planned to take her to the regattas in Cannes and St Tropez and was dreaming of racing in the Mediterranean sunshine. When Sean and Mick brought the yacht over in the spring, we launched the her on the lake in the snow. After they went back to England, I had to bring the trailer home. I turned around a corner on a small street and I took six metres of my neighbour’s fence with me! I then decided against Lake Garda and Mediterranean regattas; much safer to keep her on the lake at home!”

What does Spirit no. 1 offer to a new owner? “I have always felt she is a very safe yacht also in heavy wind, and she is easy to handle. The fantastic craftsmanship is still evident today. When there is no wind and the yacht is at anchor on the lake, I swim around her as I like to see how beautiful she is from afar. I will miss having her on the lake because she such a pretty boat and she has been a big part of my life.”

Hans continued, “Starnberger Lake has some of the best water quality in Germany, it’s so pure you can drink it. That’s part of the reason why the yacht is in such great condition. She looks as good as new.”

Munich Classic Sailing Week, an event that has been running for over 30 years at Starnberger Lake, made an exception for Spirit no. 1 when they invited her to join their regatta. Hans commented, “Normally you can’t enter a yacht built after 1960, but they made an exception for Spirit no. 1 as she is so beautiful.”

Spirit no. 1 comes with a full sail wardrobe (Hans updated the original rig to facilitate a genoa as well as a jib) and a road trailer. She experienced a heavy storm a year ago, after which her hull was resprayed giving her a shiny new finish. Her engine has been overhauled and many electronic improvements have been made over the years.

Having maintained a good relationship with Spirit Yachts over the last 24 years, Hans reflected on the changes he has witnessed at the company. “My Spirit 37 was built at a farm in Benhall, before Spirit moved to its current headquarters in Ipswich. During a visit to the new yard a few years later, I saw the 54ft yacht that featured in the Bond film Casino Royale, which was fantastic. Today, I see a very big yard with much more space and at least five or six sailing boats up to 34m and power boats up to 21m. It is unbelievable how far Spirit Yachts has come.

“Many things have changed on the construction side, but the friendly, highly-skilled boat builders and designers who make yachting dreams come true are still here.”

To find out more about Spirit no. 1 contact the team via [email protected] or call +44(0) 1473 214 715.

With an efficient sail plan and a very flat run aft, the Spirit 37 is capable of planing speeds of up to 8.6 knots. With all controls led aft to the cockpit, short-handed or single-handed sailing is accomplished with ease, whilst a regatta can be undertaken with a crew of just three. Several existing Spirit 37 owners race annually together in the Spirit of Tradition class at UK and international regattas.

With accommodation for up to four people, the Spirit 37 is the ideal weekend boat. A ‘v’ berth cabin forward is separated from the saloon by a head, whilst in the saloon, the seats provide two settee berths. A simple yet efficient galley provides ample facilities for short-term catering.

The dimensions and displacement of the Spirit 37′ allow her to be easily and economically transported by road trailer, which opens up new cruising or regatta possibilities. Whether you are looking for relaxed, weekend sailing with family or competitive regatta racing, the Spirit 37’ is an elegant, quick and easy to handle yacht.

First look: Spirit 30 – Spirit’s smallest ever yacht

  • Rupert Holmes
  • November 11, 2021

The all-new Spirit 30 is the smallest yacht ever produced by the well regarded British yard which specialises in modern classic wooden yachts. Rupert Holmes reports

buy spirit yacht

The sleek classic style of all Spirit Yachts is guaranteed to turn heads and the Ispwich-based yard’s smallest new model for many years, the spirit 30 is no exception.

The Spirit 30 follows the well-proven format of a light displacement, modern hull shape below the water allied to a performance rig and sails. It’s a combination that delivers speeds which belie the boat’s modest dimensions.

During the commissioning sail, for example, the Spirit 30 recorded 6.8 knots of boat speed close-hauled and 10 knots off the wind in 18-20 knots of breeze.

Yet this is civilised vessel with a self-tacking furling jib and all sail controls led aft for easy single and short-handed sailing. The first example is an open day sailer with a large cockpit, although there are also plans for a version with a cuddy and basic overnight accommodation.

Auxiliary power is from a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0FP electric pod drive. This offers a 16-mile range at five knots with the standard battery and a maximum speed under power of 6.5 knots.

The wood epoxy composite construction is one of the most sustainable options for building a new boat, requiring far less noxious resins and plastics than conventional fibreglass structures.

Typically three layers of timber are epoxy glued together, creating an extremely stiff, yet very light, monocoque structure. A protective outer layer of glass cloth and epoxy is then applied, which enhances waterproofing and provides impact resistance.

Spirit Yachts has gone a stage further than usual with this boat, using flax fibres and bio resins for the outer layer. The result is what the company says is its most sustainable yacht to date and plans to roll out the same materials to the larger boats in the range.

The Spirit 30 is offered with a choice of fixed or lifting keels and the boat is light enough to be towed on a road trailer. The first example is scheduled to be exhibited at the Dusseldorf boat show in January 2022.

ON TEST: Spirit 44e – the sustainable future of sailing?

  • Theo Stocker
  • November 1, 2020

A wooden boat that blazes a trail for modern technology and sustainability sounds too good to be true. Theo Stocker went to see if the Spirit 44e is as good as promised

Product Overview

Spirit yacht 44cr electric.

  • Most sustainable yacht available today
  • Sails beautifully
  • Stunning looks
  • Limited accommodation for length
  • Upkeep of wooden boat

Boats have been built out of wood since Noah first put axe to tree, but when it comes to cutting-edge yachts, timber is right back at the top.

Spirit Yachts have been building head-turningly pretty wooden yachts with stiff, lightweight laminated wooden hulls since 1993, including the largest wooden yacht built in the UK since the 1930s in the shape of the Spirit 111 , launched this year.

But away from all the fanfare, the Ipswich-based yard has also just launched Avvento , smaller sister to its 47 and 55 Cruising Range yachts.

Far from being a lesser vessel, however, the Spirit 44 Cruising Range Electric Boat (44e for short) hides advances in sustainable technology under its gleaming topsides that offer a glimpse into the future of boat building.

Unrecyclable fibreglass and sails, toxic antifoul, and fossil-fuel propulsion are replaced by sustainably sourced timber, self-sufficient electric propulsion and zero-carbon emissions.

buy spirit yacht

The proud new owner is Vincent Argiro, a retired technology entrepreneur who lives and sails in British Columbia in Canada.

Explaining his motivation to go for such a radical concept, he said: ‘My first sailboat was also the first of its kind to be built all-electric. I have never owned anything else, nor will I.

‘To me, it is a terrible corruption of the beauty and simplicity of sailing to add internal-combustion propulsion to it.’

buy spirit yacht

She is built, Spirit claims, to last a hundred years and to be largely recyclable when the time does come. In the intervening century, she will burn no hydro-carbons whatsoever with not even a backup generator on board, or, for that matter, any obvious renewable energy sources. I was curious to see how she worked.

buy spirit yacht

THE TEST VERDICT

The Spirit 44e is a fabulously expensive boat given her limited accommodation and shorter than average waterline length, if you are going to judge her by volume.

As managing director Nigel Stuart says: ‘You need to think about her volume relative to her waterline rather than overall length.’ That’s a nice idea, if you have the luxury of not worrying about marina fees.

buy spirit yacht

You can get a lot of boat for this kind of budget, so why would you buy the Spirit 44e? Firstly, she is drop dead gorgeous. From her sleek lines to her dovetail joints, there is no part of the boat that is not a pleasure to look at.

Then, she is utterly engaging to sail. Lightweight, powerful and responsive, helming her will put a smile on your face, while she should cope equally well with the rough stuff. Finally, she is light years ahead of most production yachts in terms of environmental impact.

buy spirit yacht

I would opt for the smaller rig and higher boom, and I’d like narrower cockpit seats. Most owners would opt for a backup diesel generator for peace of mind, though with new battery tech on its way, unlimited range is within reach.

The Spirit 44e goes a very long way to prove that yachts can be built and run in a sustainable way.

buy spirit yacht

Would the Spirit 44e suit you and your crew?

This boat isn’t about mass-market appeal, but who wouldn’t fall in love given half a chance? In reality, for the kind of cruising most sailors really do, weekends and a few weeks here and there, she is luxuriously comfortable for a cruising couple with occasional guests. Liveaboard cruising is more of a stretch, but entirely feasible, while she’ll also do well racing round the cans.

There’s plenty of entertaining space, particularly on deck once you’re in harbour, and if you don’t mind the stares, she turns heads wherever she goes.

Very few boats out there could hold a hydrocarbon-free candle to the Spirit 44e. Even Noah might have been tempted to leave his animals for this boat.
