Mystery Harbor Winner for December: Bristol Harbor

A word from our winner.

I enjoyed seeing your photo of Bristol Marine’s harbor launch, Olivia dropping off passengers at Thames Street Landing in Bristol Harbor, R.I. When we purchased the Bristol Boatyard in 1998, there was no public launch service available and we quickly decided to commission the construction of a Crosby 26,’ and named her after my business partner’s granddaughter.

Early on, she had a bimini cover, but it was removed after a few seasons of getting tangled up in the sporty afternoon southwest breeze that we enjoy throughout the summer. You can just make out our storage shed and main office building with new bathrooms and showers on the far side of the harbor.

Rich in history

That’s a view from town looking across to Bristol YC. The launch looks like BYC’s Crosby Tug launch. It’s a great place to visit in the summer, and Bristol’s rich yachting history is still evident. There’s the Herreshoff Museum and lots of quaint shops and restaurants. I grew up sailing and working at Bristol YC.

Get ashore to explore

Leaving Block Island and heading toward the Cape Cod Canal, we couldn’t make more than one knot due to the good pounding into the waves in Buzzards Bay. After an hour with little headway made, we gave up and headed to Newport, but it was the Boat Show weekend, and there was no room for us! The wind was out of the north, so we headed to Bristol Harbor to wait for a better weather window. What a gem of a place! The Herreshoff Museum is an amazing place to spend time exploring beautiful boats, and Bristol is a very walkable town with lots of options for a bite to eat. The launch in the Mystery Harbor picture is a great way to get ashore to explore.

The first item to catch my eye was the Bristol Marine launch, Olivia. Looking closer, it was easy to confirm this by the Bristol Marine and Bristol Yacht Club’s buildings in the distance. While I am a bit biased, Bristol Harbor is by far one of the best cruising harbors in New England, with very easy access to the town, parks, museums, and public transit, all without the crowds of other coastal towns. It is a great cruiser destination worthy of the few hour’s travel up Narragansett Bay. Plus, the town has just expanded its dockage with very nice new docks.

Worth your while

Home sweet home… Bristol Harbor! The center of my universe for the past 45 years. The Crosby launch, Olivia operated by Bristol Marine, was a dead giveaway (the Bristol Yacht Club visible behind the piling sealed the deal). We keep our Freedom 35 in the mooring field and our old Eastern 22 at the town docks.

Bristol Harbor is most welcoming to visiting yachts. Transient moorings and launch service are available at Bristol Yacht Club (very friendly place), Bristol Marine, Herreshoff Museum, and the town’s 15 or so transient moorings. Lots of pubs, taverns, restaurants and activities only across the street from either of the two town dinghy docks. There’s a Maritime Center with showers, laundry, vending machines and the Harbormaster’s Office. The harbor itself is very active in the summer, with two active sailing camps (the Yacht Club and Herreshoff Museum), a good size commercial fishing fleet, and visiting (smaller) cruise ships and classic yachts. The town operates a fuel dock, pump out and transient slips at a brand-new (2022) marina. Worth the trip.

From a distance

I believe the mystery harbor is Bristol, Rhode Island, because the photo was taken from condo docks on the east side of the harbor and on the west side is a house that was previously owned by the McDonald family (not mine) and the gray building peeking out from the piling is the Bristol Yacht Club. I kept a boat in Bristol Harbor for 25 years.

I have been reading Points East for many years. I’ve always just picked it up at a local business (Bristol Bagels in Bristol RI), it was a morning ritual to have a bagel and read Points East. The name of your publication embodies my cruising dreams, heading to ‘points east.’

I really like the local feel of Points East and the fact that it is not a glossy fancy pants boating magazine.

Charlie Enright, the winning Ocean Race skipper who got his start sailing in the waters of Bristol Harbor out of the East Bay Sailing Foundation and the Bristol Yacht Club, returned to his old stomping grounds on Dec. 3 to deliver a multimedia presentation of his 11th Hour Racing team’s challenges and ultimate victory in the last Ocean Race, which concluded this past summer in Genoa, Italy. At the end of the presentation, which included remarks from friends and fellow sailors Chris Brito and Peter Levesque as well as father Tom Enright, Commodore Paul Redman unveiled BYC’s new perpetual trophy, the Enright Outstanding Achievement in Offshore Sailing Award, with Charlie’s name engraved on the trophy as its first recipient. The trophy will hang in the Chart Room. “It’s a real honor to have something that bears your name hanging in a storied place like the Bristol Yacht Club,” said Enright, reached after the event. “Hopefully it inspires future participation in offshore sailing, particularly for the next generation of young local sailors.”

This yacht club is tucked back away from rough waters. Grounds are nicely kept and bathroom's are clean. There is a play ground for the kids a launch, which is part of the package when staying here. We will definitely be adding this place to our places to stop when visiting the Narragansett bay next time.

Young lady launch driver with dark hair and dark eyes is very pleasant and service was nice on my 4th visit to Bristol :)

U.S. SailGP Team hosts inaugural Foiling First: Learn to Foil Camp with the Bristol Yacht Club & East Bay Sailing Foundation

NEW YORK - July 27, 2021 - The United States SailGP Team held its inaugural ‘Learn to Foil’ camp with the Bristol Yacht Club & East Bay Sailing Foundation (EBSF) July 20-21 as it kicked-off ‘Foiling First’ – a breakthrough athlete development program created to advance diversity and inclusion in the sport as it builds the first ever professional pathway to foiling in the US.

Foiling First: Learn to Foil Camps were created in support of the initiative’s goal to use foiling as a catalyst to advance change in the sport of sailing; expanding the talent pool, educating young athletes and coaches about the importance of inclusion and equity in sailing, and including communities that may have previously been excluded from the sport

For the camp at Bristol Yacht Club & EBSF, U.S. SailGP Team athletes Jimmy Spithill, Rome Kirby, Andrew Campbell, and Cooper Dressler flew in straight after competing at the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Plymouth, to facilitate a multi-day course introducing thirty-five community youth and their coaches to foiling. The two-day camp consisted of extensive individual coaching sessions with youth and athletes, including safety briefings, equipment overviews, on-shore instruction, as well as two individual hour-long, on-water coaching sessions per athlete.

Spithill said: “The other athletes and I couldn’t help but smile all day. When you see the next generation get their first taste of foiling, it takes us back to our first time taking off and flying above the water. We see this as starting to fill the American talent pool and we want to be sure we’re casting a wider net and help to advance inclusion and diversity in our sport.”

American boat manufacturer Melges Performance Sailboats , which has partnered with the U.S. SailGP Team and Foiling First, provided access to the new Skeeta and Nikki foiling platforms for the camp which are designed to allow new athletes an easy transition between traditional sailing and foiling, facilitating a smooth process for youth to learn how to foil for the first time.

East Bay Sailing chairperson Kristin Browne said: “This was an amazing week for our community helping launch Foiling First with the best coaches you can possibly have. I heard kids come off the water saying ‘this was the most fun they’ve ever had sailing’ and we can’t wait to continue in our partnership with the U.S. SailGP Team.”

As part of the camp programming, youth and coaches also participated in an educational workshop put on by the team’s #RaceForTheFuture partner RISE , which educated the group about the concept of identity, its multifaceted nature and how advancing diversity and inclusion benefits teams and the sport more broadly.

RISE senior director of curriculum Dr. Collin Williams said: “We’ve seen that engaging with youth is important because a lot of the stereotypes and biases we have heard we learn as kids. We’re excited to partner with the U.S. SailGP Team and help educate young athletes on how they can create inclusive environments and, in the future, help lead change.”

The United States SailGP Team is currently accepting applications from sailing organizations interested in joining Foiling First. Interested organizations can learn more and apply for both the partnership program and learn to foil camps at FoilingFirst.com.
