BLACKCAT 50 - unprecedented performance and luxury

Avatar de Norbert Conchin

Multihulls World #170

The BlackCat concept was created in 2015 by Australian champion Mitch Booth - Olympic Tornado medalist - in collaboration with Malcolm McKeon, the highly renowned designer of more than 50 superyachts over 30 m (100’). Following the 35 m (115’) project, a 50 m (165’) multiyacht has now been developed.

We will keep you posted on new articles on this subject.

Baltic Yachts for the all-carbon construction, North Sails and Future Fibres for the canvas and Southern Spars for the rig: this selection of skills, that has contributed to the best results in the America's Cup and many other leading international races, has the ambition to build the fastest superyacht catamaran of all time. Her dimensions of 50.40 m (165’4”) in length and 18.5 m (60’8”) in beam, her very low drag and very impressive sail plan should allow her to cruise permanently at between 20 and 30 knots. Twin Caterpillar diesels of 650 HP each are fitted, for maintaining 16 knots during periods of no wind. This multiyacht, with her taut lines and large glazed areas, is certainly exceptional. As for range, it’s global, thanks to her 5,000-nm autonomy under engine and of course much more under sail. With 320 m² (3,450 sq ft) of living space on the main deck and the 240 m² (2,580 sq ft) in the hulls - for five double guest cabins and 8 crew members – you’re able to imagine the standards you can expect. The very pure and modern design of the interior fittings and ultra-design furniture have been created by M2 Atelier. The main suite extends over the forward part of the nacelle with a dressing room and a bathroom in the port hull. From there, the owner has access to the gigantic forward cockpit which can be kept for his own private use or shared with guests who will also enjoy the swimming pool. The four double guest cabins, including one VIP cabin, are in the starboard hull with the crew on the port side. Life on board is centered mainly in the nacelle where there is a generously sized saloon with a bar and dining area, accessible from the above-mentioned cockpit. The aft sides of the hull fold to create two side platforms, which become sun terraces at water level. What more could you wish for?

BLACKCAT: THE FAST FULL CARBON CATAMARAN OF THE FUTURE

Minimal Logo

Mitch Booth is a professional sailor, who took part to Olympic and Ocean races, American Cup and many other important international competitions, becoming world champions many times.

We met him along the quays of Monaco Boat Show. Like all the other visitors, we was admiring yachts and superyachts but, above all, he was there as the founder of BlackCat Superyachts . During his interesting press conference, he presented both his new ambitious project and the partnership with Baltic Yachts , one among the most important yachting brands. Baltic takes its place alongside other two BlackCat’s partners, North Technology Group ( North Sails, Southern Spars and Future Fibers) and M2 Atelier , an international architecture studio .

blackcat_13

A catamaran of this size – 50.44  m long and 18.50 m wide – can be compared to a 70-metre yacht. Compared to a multihull, lists are minimal. Aboard, comfort is ensured: huge windows, boundless spaces and a breath-taking modern design anywhere.

The astern cockpit platform is boundless , two real staircases lead to the beach club and the fore cockpit, equipped with a luxury swimming pool, is very large, too.

Of course, many details can be tailor-made.

The project is by Malcom McKeon , a very experience designer who has signed over 200 boats, about 50 of which with a length of over 30 metres.

Meet the radical new BlackCat, a 50m/165ft luxury multihull that can do 30 knots!

  • Toby Hodges
  • April 15, 2016

Australian Olympic champion and multihull expert Mitch Booth has founded a new brand of luxury cruising superyacht catamarans called BlackCat. The first model is a 50m/165ft long and designed by Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design. If built, it will be the largest single structure carbon fibre yacht ever.

BlackCat

Every now and again you see a radical new concept that makes you grin in the knowledge that yacht design has just taken one brave step forward. This new BlackCat does just that – a design that is simply awesome.

“This ‘supercat’ concept is really exciting because there is nothing else available that combines the practicality of an enormous, stable, platform, with exhilarating performance,” said Booth.

And the BlackCat’s top speeds should be fiendish – estimated at between 25 to 30 knots for this first 50m showcase concept – setting a whole new benchmark for superyacht performance.

She remains very much a luxury cruiser however Booth insists. “By no stretch of the imagination is it to be like a semi-racer – there’ll be no pushing a bow under or flying a hull.”

BlackCat

The BlackCat is designed to be simple to manage and sail at speed, and palatial to liveaboard. Booth told us that he has been talking to McKeon about this concept for a couple of years, and that the Lymington based designer started to work on this concept last November.

What makes the BlackCat so refreshingly different is how sleek her lines have been kept. Supersize cats tend to grow vertically too, with high topsides to house accommodation and awkward flybridges.

BlackCat

Not so with the BlackCat. It’s almost as if she’s been created as an adrenaline-injecting poster for teenagers, one to hang next to Ferraris and fighter planes.

McKeon has even given her concave scoops in the topsides – like a classic Corvette  – which he says is an aesthetic tool to break up the topsides. As BlackCat’s founder Mitch Booth has spent most of his life racing extreme multihulls, the BlackCat’s fuel-injected look should not surprise.

Booth says their target for the BlackCat range is between 100ft to 200ft long, where the latter represents the upper end of engineering capabilities today. “Width is a big factor – it adds stability and righting moment but also increases loads dramatically,” said Booth.

With all that beam, load, and speed potential, safety will be a primary concern. Booth insists that her performance will be perfectly manageable and that “no superyacht multihull should ever go close to flying a hull.”

As a floating platform this phenomenally beamy design presents serious dance floor potential. While the freeboard of McKeon’s sexy hull shape has been kept low and lean, accommodation space is still a phenomenal 340m2. The 20m beam of the 50m BlackCat for example helps create a surface area equivalent to half a football pitch.

“It’s a logical progression for superyacht designs to move towards catamarans,” said Booth. “There are so many advantages to large multihull cruising compared to our monohull cousins, such as speed, space, low heel, comfort, the list goes on and on.”

BlackCat

The hand of McKeon can be seen both in the lines and the extensive amount of glass used in the superstructure. There are also some ingenious solutions around the sunken bridgedeck, and the fold down aft quarters that reveal a tender garage and gym.

“There’s been a space in the market for some time for a large catamaran design that can offer the luxury and quality of a superyacht this size,” said McKeon, “and also provide this level of stability and high performance.”

Whilst the BlackCat might be able to get into shallower anchorages than most monohull superyachts, her swinging circle will be somewhat antisocial. And a BlackCat owner would need to get used to anchoring as stern-to marina docks might be limited.

Just the thought of owning a small island capable of shifting at 30 knots – is enough to make you giggle childishly.

Founded in 2015 by Mitch Booth, the Blackcat brand sets the standard in large cruising catamarans. Our team of specialized expert consultants in design, engineering, build, sails and mast will create and deliver the ultimate cruising multihull.

Mitch has been involved with many projects at the cutting edge of design and construction of multihulls including America’s Cup skipper and Sailing manager.

MALCOLM McKEON

BlackCat chief designer

Malcolm is one of the world’s most successful superyacht designers with an impressive portfolio of over 200 boats, fifty of which exceed 30 metres.

Malcolm’s inspirational conceptual work, space planning, exterior styling and construction have resulted in over 30 international awards.

McConaghy is the exclusive build partner of the BlackCat Superyachts BlackCat30.  This 30m design is the third model in the groundbreaking BlackCat series of high-performance superyacht catamarans.

McConaghy_Boats_Black Cat 30 (4)

With overall design from world-renowned naval architect Malcolm McKeon, interior design from M2Atelier, a carbon rig from Southern Spars and sails from North Sails – the partnership pedigree of this exceptional line could not be higher. McConaghy have been selected to join this exclusive alliance of partners due to our specialist knowledge and experience in the build of midsize carbon fibre multihulls and advanced composite construction methods.

The BlackCat range is the brainchild of champion Australian yachtsman Mitch Booth. Mitch has spent more than 40 years racing virtually every type of catamaran, in a career that earned him two Olympic medals and a dozen world titles, as well as numerous awards including Australian Yachtsman of the Year in 1992 and 1996 and Dutch Yachtsman of the Year in 2004.

The BlackCat 30’s spectacular interior design by m2atelier provides accommodation for up to eight guests in six cabins, along with quarters for a complement of four crew. The yacht has a very open and spacious feel, with the main deck saloon on a single level and big enough to cater for large dinner parties and entertaining.

The many advantages of fast and comfortable sailing on a multihull, capable of cruising at 20 knots and reaching maximum speeds of 32 knots, with a low heel angle and a stable platform, make the BlackCat 30 an appealing alternative to a 40m monohull. To accommodate a client’s wishes, each design can be tailor-made right down to the smallest detail.

The BlackCat range of superyachts are at the cutting edge of cruising performance and due to the lightweight carbon fibre construction, the yachts are able to sail or motor very efficiently, minimizing emissions and, in some cases, eliminating them completely.

BlackCat Concept Catamaran

Blackcat superyacht concept design.

Teaming with Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design on the dramatic BlackCat designs, Mr. Booth has proven that a salty dog can learn (or teach) new tricks.

Don’t miss the video of this catamaran concept later in this article.

BlackCat Concept Design Is About Open Outdoor Spaces

An expansive, unobstructed main deck with protective, yet panoramic glass canopy extends far wider than any conventional yacht in this range. The layout is all about flexibility which is necessary making any future build easy to meet a lucky owner’s specifications.

Since this catamaran concept was built for relaxation rather than racing, the designers included two waterline platforms that fold downward like wings when the yacht is at anchor offering more area for sunning, lounging, and fun and games. And the extended platforms offers closer, easier ladderless access to the water, see the schematic at right that indicates placement of the platforms on either side of the forward hulls.

Cruising Locale May Affect Choice of the BlackCat

The BlackCat’s broad design enhances one of the most appealing aspects of a catamaran: it reduces the rocking and rolling out on the open water. The increase stability makes for fewer queasy landlubber guests and even for veteran sailors who can get a better night’s sleep.

Comfort and relaxation comes even at high speeds, with a heel angle of just 4 degrees compared to the usual 24. This is good news since the estimated cruising speed is between 25 and 30 knots.

Building the BlackCat Will Make History

Whomever commissions the first build can boast owning the world’s largest single-structure carbon fiber yacht. While breathing life into this beast will be risky having no direct design comparisons or chance of a test run, studying the designs and considering the possibilities turns your heart to believing it is worth the risk.

See more stunning ideas and images of the BlackCat superyacht concept . And check out the video at right.

DESCRIPTION

The BlackCat 30 (30.4m/100ft) design has been created following many client requests for a catamaran of this size and it’s the latest addition to the portfolio of these next generation, sleek, state-of-the-art, and high-performance multihull superyachts. The BlackCat 50 was the first of these impressive multihulls to be introduced to the market place, and the BlackCat 30 has the same beautiful lines as its larger sister and features a spectacular interior design by M2 Atelier.

The BlackCat 30 provides accommodation for up to eight guests in six cabins, along with quarters for a complement of four crew.  The yacht has a very open and spacious feel, with the main deck saloon on a single level and big enough to cater for large dinner parties and entertaining.

The many advantages of fast and comfortable sailing on a multihull, capable of cruising at 20 knots and reaching maximum speeds in excess of 30 knots, with a low heel angle and a stable platform, make the BlackCat 30 an appealing alternative to a 40m monohull. To accommodate a client’s wishes, each design can be tailor-made right down to the smallest detail.

The BlackCat range of superyachts are at the cutting edge of cruising performance and due to the lightweight carbon fibre construction, the yachts are able to sail or motor very efficiently, minimising emissions and, in some cases, eliminating them completely.

BlackCat Superyachts have identified McConaghy Boats as the builder of choice for the BlackCat 30.  McConaghy are widely regarded as the experts in the specialist construction of midsize carbon fibre multihulls. McConaghy is the latest addition to the existing alliance of industry-leading suppliers united by BlackCat Superyachts, with other notable names involved including the North Sails and Southern Spars, reinforcing the benchmark already established by BlackCat Superyachts in the large luxury cruising catamaran market.

BlackCat Superyachts expands range with 35m catamaran

BlackCat Superyachts and Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design have teamed once up again for the second model in this maxi catamaran series.

The BlackCat 35 metre has been designed to offer exceptional sailing performance as well as high fuel efficiency when cruising under power, thanks to a lightweight carbon-fibre hull. McKeon has provided the distinctive exterior lines for the project.

Mitch Booth, founder of BlackCat Superyachts, explained: “After launching the BlackCat 50 model in 2016, it became apparent that the market appetite for a high-quality multihull superyachts is rapidly growing. The BlackCat 35 offers the same characteristics of style and performance in a smaller model.”

The 14 metre beam of the BlackCat 35 means that owners can expect huge interior volumes, with accommodation for up to eight guests and four crewmembers. The interior specifications are open to customisation, with M2 Atelier signed on to create a bespoke décor.

Key features include a large main deck saloon with a single-level design — ideal for hosting large dinner parties or entertaining guests. Two raised helm positions are situated to either side of the shaded cockpit, while a spacious foredeck seating area adds to the al fresco relaxation options on the BlackCat 35.

BlackCat Superyachts estimates that the 35 will have a maximum speed of 32 knots and a comfortable cruising speed of 20 knots. Build partners include Baltic Yachts , who will create the hull and decking, and North Sails, who will provide and optimise the sails and rig package.

The news comes two months after international brokerage firm Y.CO was appointed to handle all sales enquiries for the BlackCat Superyachts project .

Blackcat 30 Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design

“The cruising catamaran market is the largest growth sector in midsize yachts today. We believe this trend will continue and eventually will become common throughout the superyacht sailing scene. The large volume and stable platform a BlackCat multihull provides is the logical solution for comfortable cruising”, said Mitch Booth, founder of BlackCat Superyachts .

“We are very proud to be part of this extraordinary team in such a unique project. We try to integrate and connect the interior design with the lines, characteristics and performances of the exterior design in order to achieve a continuous atmosphere and energy. Contemporary, lightness, comfort and luxury blend together in these one-of-a-kind spaces that any superyacht owner expects to see. Technology and craftsmanship are balanced in every aspect of the design to create exceptional spaces” , said Marijana Radovic and Marco Bonelli, BlackCat interior designers from m2atelier.
