The movie became the first Dhanush film to reach the 100-crore club at the box office within 10 days of its release.

With five films under his belt, the director has already established a cult following.

Nobody was surprised when director Vetrimaaran’s most recent film, Asuran with Dhanush, opened to a raucous love from both critics and audiences. The movie became the first Dhanush film to reach the 100-crore club at the box office within 10 days of its release.

Vetrimaaran has solidified his position as one of the most intriguing directors in Kollywood over the past ten years. With five films under his belt, the director has already established a cult following.

But Dhanush could be equally responsible for the early Vetrimaaran movie’s success. It is no secret that the pair have a very close working relationship; they are both National Award winners. The actor starred in every other Vetrimaaran movie except Visaranai, including Polladhavan, Aadu Kaalam, Vada Chennai, and Asuran.

Over the past 12 years, the director and the actor have praised one another’s achievements in the industry. In 2005, while working as an assistant on the late director Balu Mahendran’s Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam set, Vetrimaaran had his first encounter with Dhanush. Vetrimaaran composed Polladhavan for Dhanush two years later. The actor agreed right away, and the movie quickly became a big success.

Vetrimaaran waited another four years before his subsequent release, Aadukalam in 2011, following the success of Polladhavan. Nobody had any doubts that this movie would succeed and receive praise. Dhanush excelled in a role that required him to portray an assistant to a Madurai cockfighting legend. At the 58th National Film Awards, Aadukalam went on to win six awards, including Best Actor and Best Director for Vetrimaaran and Dhanush, respectively.

Leaving Visaranai aside, for the time being, commercial films like Vada Chennai and even Asuran exist. Despite their overblown approach, they stand out as quality films. We are immediately taken to the seedy underbelly of the slums of north Chennai in Vada Chennai.

Asuran, on the other hand, is about a poor family’s fight and defeat against the exploitative rich. Despite the violence in both movies, they don’t glorify it. They are direct and blunt, and every aspect of the movie including the background music, the cinematography, and the editing works together to move the plot along. In circumstances like this, Vetrimaaran’s brilliance shines.

The unconventional way Vetrimaaran approaches cinema sets it apart from other styles. There seem to be two things you can expect from a Vetrimaaran film: excellent writing and, to boot, equally excellent performances, after 12 years and five high-calibre movies.

In Kollywood, very few director-actor teams are as successful as Vetrimaaran and Dhanush. It strongly resembles the collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro. We can only hope that the duo keeps providing us with excellent movies for years to come.

Asuran movie review: Dhanush, Manju Warrier deliver intense performances in Vetrimaran's riveting drama

Language: Tamil

Dhanush and director Vetrimaran has once again dared to take the road less traveled, and delivered another brilliant film, that hooks you straight away. For the actor-director combo, it is another feather on their cap and as good as their  earlier films like Pollathavan Adukalam and Vada Chennai . It is intense, raw, and hard-hitting, and tells about the hold of caste and class in rural south Tamil Nadu of 1980s, where the rich gobbled up farmlands from the poor in the name of development. The film is an adaptation of Sahitya Academy Award winner Poomani’s novel Vekkai .

The film also shows the mastery of Vetrimaran over his craft and storytelling in making it an entertaining manner without being preachy. It is marked by an outstanding performance from Dhanush, who can be seen in three avatars, as a hot blooded youngster, a matured middle-aged man, and a calm and composed old man in his early 50s. The character allows Dhanush to prove his acting range and calibre without any prosthetic make up or gimmicks. Be warned: it is the most violent film from the director-actor duo so far as the story is all about revenge and its consequences.    Asuran is a riveting blood-soaked revenge drama set in rural Kovilpatti near Tirunelveli in the 1980s in south Tamil Nadu. Sivasamy (Dhanush), a lower-caste person is a marginal farmer and an alcoholic, who leads a peaceful life, along with his aggressive wife Pachaiyamma ( Manju Warrier ). Both their sons, the 20-year-old Murugan (Teejay) and the 16-year-old Chidambaram (Ken) are hot-headed. Their happy family life gets a jolt when a rich landlord, belonging to the upper caste, Narasimhan (Aadukalam Naren) wants to acquire their three-acre farmland adjoining his property to build a cement factory. Things go haywire as the landlord uses his influence with local panchayat and police, and humiliates Sivasamy. This infuriates Murugan, who has a run-in with Narasimman, and slaps him. Unable to bear the humiliation of getting beaten by a lower-caste man, Narasimmam arranges the brutal beheading of Murugan. Meanwhile, Sivasamy tries to pacify his family members from taking revenge but Chidambaram, unable to see the suffering of his mother, who is devastated by the death of her eldest son, kills Narasimman. The family is on the run as Narasimman’s sons and relatives start the hunt for Chidambaram. Sivasamy still tries for a compromise with the help of an activist lawyer (Prakashraj). But Narasimman’s family wants to take revenge at any cost,. Sivasamy is now forced to protect his son. What happens next, including a back-story on how Sivasamy became a soft-spoken pacifist, unwilling to confront his enemies, is told in a stunning manner. Vetrimaran’s tight-knitted screenplay, and his well-defined characters is what makes the revenge survival drama tick. The subtle message he wants to tell is there is a devil (Asuran) lurking inside all of us, and comes out at times. Revenge will consume a person, will be their downfall, and in no way, will solve their problems. His scene composition is terrific, the interval block is one of the best, and the characterisation stands out.

Manju, as Dhanush’s wife, makes a sensational debut in Tamil. You can feel her anger and the wetness in her tears. The two newcomers, Teejay and Ken, who play Dhanush’s sons, are riveting, and the supporting cast of Naren, Pasupathi, and Prakashraj bring life into their roles. GV Prakash’s score is his best in recent times, and perfect as per the mood of the film. Velraj’s (he plays a cameo) camera, especially the night shots in forest areas (beginning of the film when Dhanush and family are on the run), creates tension in the atmosphere.    The film belongs to Dhanush as his body language and voice modulation is in perfect sync with the character he plays. A big shout out to the actor and star for being brave to do the role of Sivasamy, something which his contemporaries would never do. But Vetrimaran has written the role and projected him in such a manner where the essential ingredient of Tamil cinema, ‘heroism’, comes out well. Asuran is one of the best films of the year, and a must watch. Vetrimaran keeps the flag of good cinema flying high.

Vetrimaaran and Dhanush never fail to deliver quality films. Here’s why

Filmmaker-actor duo vetrimaaran and dhanush have complimented each other’s growth in the industry over the course of 12 years. let’s trace their journey and try to see why their combination never fails to work..

vetrimaran dhanush

To nobody’s surprise, filmmaker Vetrimaaran’s latest movie with Dhanush, Asuran opened to thunderous response from both critics and audiences alike. The film also entered the 100-crore club at the box office within 10 days of its release (October 4), becoming the first Dhanush film to achieve this feat.

Over the last decade, Vetrimaaran has cemented his reputation in the film industry as one of the most interesting filmmakers Kollywood has to offer. The director is only five films old and all of them have managed to attain the cult status in their own light.

vetrimaran dhanush

This certainly is not an easy thing to achieve. But the success of early Vetrimaaran films could be attributed to Dhanush . Both National Award winners, it is no secret that the duo share a very close working relationship. Apart from Visaranai (which was produced by Dhanush’s banner, Wunderbar films), the actor was the lead in all the other Vetrimaaran films, namely Polladhavan, Aadu Kaalam, Vada Chennai and Asuran.

The filmmaker and actor have complimented each other’s growth in the industry over the course of 12 years. Let’s trace their journey and try to see why their combination never fails to work.

Vetrimaaran first met Dhanush on the sets of the late director Balu Mahendran’s Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam in 2005 where Vetrimaaran worked as an assistant. Two years later, Vetrimaaran wrote Polladhavan for Dhanush. The actor immediately agreed and the film became a huge hit.

Festive offer

Following the success of Polladhavan, Vetrimaaran waited another four years before his next release, Aadukalam in 2011. There was no doubt in anybody’s mind that this film was going to win accolades. Dhanush was phenomenal in a role which required him to play an underling to a cockfighting legend in Madurai. Aadukalam went on to win six awards at the 58th National Film Awards, including Best Director and Best Actor for Vetrimaaran and Dhanush, respectively.

Keeping Visaranai aside for the moment, Vada Chennai and even, Asuran, are commercial movies. They stand out as “quality films” despite its massy approach. In Vada Chennai, we are taken straight to the seedy, underbelly of the slums of north Chennai. Asuran, on the other hand, is about the struggle and loss of a poor family against the exploitative rich. Both the films are violent, but there is no glorification. They are blunt, forthright and all elements of the film, be it the background music, cinematography or editing, work in harmony to push the story forward. Vetrimaaran’s genius shines in moments like this.

Visaranai was released in 2015 without making any noise and lacked any sort of commercial aspect. Once you watch the film, you understand why. Visaranai is a difficult watch. It chronicles the journey of three immigrants who are falsely accused of a robbery and then tortured by the police. They are stuck in an unforgiving space and every punch from the cops resounds in the theatre. The film’s appeal lies in its brute reality. When Vetrimaaran went to Dhanush with this script, he told the actor that the film will only run for three days. Dhanush backed the project anyway and the film went on to become India’s official entry to the Oscars that year. This is the amount of confidence the actor and director have on each other and this camaraderie reflects on screen, with every film.

Even though Dhanush was evolving and growing as an actor while working on different kinds of movies, Vetrimaaran’s successes set him up as a formidable director. But he is not someone who likes to capitalise on his fame immediately. On many occasions, the filmmaker has gone on record to talk about how he likes making films at his own pace, hence the gaps between each film, except for Asuran, which he had to make on a deadline. Vetrimaaran has said that it was a taxing, emotional experience for him and he doesn’t intend to do it again.

The director has been vocal about wanting to make films that highlight the lives of the marginalised and the forgotten classes of society. In fact, the name of his banner, Grass Roots Productions, is an extension of that ideology. The fact that he handles the story and the characters with great care is evident in all his films. There are no“heroes” in Vetrimaaran movies, only characters.

Vetrimaaran’s approach to cinema is different because it is unapologetic. In Asuran, there is a scene where a school girl is being humiliated and beaten for wearing slippers. It is an uncompromising and honest scene, sure to make you uncomfortable but that’s exactly how Vetrimaaran wants you to feel. The execution of such scenes are a Testament to his writing skills. After all, he calls himself a writer, and not a director.

After 12 years and five quality films, there seems to be two things you can expect from a Vetrimaaran film – excellent writing and equally excellent performances to boot. Very few director/actor tandem in Kollywood works as well as Vetrimaaran and Dhanush. It’s very reminiscent of the combination of Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro. One can only hope the duo continues to enrich us with brilliant cinema for years to come.

Vetrimaaran and I are brothers: Dhanush

Vetrimaaran and I are brothers: Dhanush

The 100th-day celebration of Dhanush-starrer Asuran happened today in Chennai. Apart from the actor, the event also saw the attendance of the film's cast and crew such as director Vetrimaaran, producer Thanu, music director GV Prakash Kumar, Ken Karunas, Ammu Abirami, Teejay, Balaji Sakthivel, Pawan, Venkatesh, and editor Ramar, among others.

Director Balaji Sakthivel, who made his acting debut with Asuran , said, "Some films will be critically acclaimed but will not do financially well and some films will be the other way around. Asuran is one of those rare films, that too in today's scenario, to have achieved both. The technicians have put in so much effort that, in front of the camera, their work looked effortless."

Singer Teejay, who also made his debut with Asuran , said, "Dreams do come true and Asuran has been a huge boost. I was initially apprehensive but Dhanush sir's backstories and other things he shared gave me the confidence. I have to thank Andrea for introducing me to Vetrimaaran sir."

Ken Karunas, who took to the stage next, said, "Most of my scenes were with Dhanush sir and only because of the freedom he gave, I able to pull off the role."

Music director GV Prakash said, "It's not often we see 100-days function these days. I am glad that Asuran achieved it and that I was a part of it. I have to thank my music team as we had very little time to finish the film. We struggled and finished it in time to make it to the festival release. I would tell Thanu sir that Asuran would be as iconic as his Kizhakku Cheemayile and Kaakha Kaakha and it has ended up like it."

Producer Thanu said, "Dhanush called me while shooting Velaiyilla Pattathari and said we should do a film with Vetri Maaran. After SP Muthuraman sir, it is Vetri who holds a special place in my heart. He is someone who considers a film to be bad if it does not become a financial success to its producer. He had dengue when he worked on the film and had a bed in the dubbing studio where he worked round the clock. After Sivaji sir, Dhanush is someone who can do all type of characters."

Director Vetri Maaran, who followed, said, "Such functions are when we can thank and apologise to those that we owe. A film makes itself up and we're all just mediums. We just have to create the space for it. I feel Asuran is an essential film at this juncture. Indraya Tamil makkal oda velipaad ah dhaan indha padatha paakuren . A film's commercial success is just an accident. What we can assure is putting in our efforts and giving it our best. A lot of other factors decide its success." Speaking about Dhanush, the filmmaker said, "I've known Dhanush since 2003. He has always been a director's actor, but he went a step ahead for Asuran . Dhanush made the character Sivasami what it is."

Dhanush spoke last, and said, "The Blood Bath track alone contributed to 25 per cent of Asuran 's success. I was in London when the film got put together, so I was apprehensive. It was my mother who called me first when the film released and said that it was getting a good response."

Recalling an incident that happened on the sets of his film Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam , which was directed by Vetri Maaran's mentor Balu Mahendra, Dhanush said, "I had played a prank on Vetri who was then an assistant director. I had asked Balu sir to make him enact a scene that I was supposed to do. But it backfired when he pulled it off extremely well. Then I did it in my way but director sir did not react any differently. When I later asked sir which among the two performances he liked, he smilingly said, 'You are asking me to choose between my sons. I am not going to answer that.' He saw the two of us as his sons and we have been brothers ever since."

While speaking about Asuran , Dhanush added, "The role I played is of someone who is older than me. A director must have the confidence to choose an actor for such a role and I owe him for that. We discuss and change things about stories usually, but for Asuran , we stuck to what we discussed the first time. This film's success would not have been possible if not for every single person who worked on it."

Producer KE Gnanavel Raja of Studio Green has confirmed that director Vetrimaaran will be reuniting for the fifth time for a movie based on the Kolar gold mines. In a recent interview, Gnanavel noted that the filmmaker was working on the story set against the KGF backdrop while discussing his upcoming movie Thangalaan.

"Vetrimaaran sir is now working on a film based on KGF with Dhanush in the lead. And he will do a film based on his research and findings about its history. And Pa Ranjith has done Thangalaan based on the research he did on the subject," Gnanavel told Behindwoods.

However, Gnanavel did not reveal any information about the project's timeline or whether he will be bankrolling the movie. Nevertheless, this revelation has already caused a lot of excitement among the fans. Vetrimaaran has directed Dhanush in four movies, and the duo is expected to reunite for Vada Chennai 2, which is expected to be a trilogy.

Vetrimaaran and Dhanush are one of the blockbuster director-actor combos of Tamil cinema. Vetrimaaran has directed Dhanush so far in four movies, including Polladhavan, Aadukalam, Vada Chennai and Asuran. The duo are expected to reunite for Vada Chennai 2, which is touted to be a trilogy. Will the movie on KGF happen before Vada Chennai 2? Only time will tell.

In the meantime, Vetrimaaran has several movies in the pipeline, including Viduthalai Part 2. He has also committed Vaadi Vaasal with Tamil superstar Suriya. The pre-production work is going on for the movie and it is expected to hit the floors soon. Rumours have it that he has also signed Telugu superstar Jr NTR for a movie. A confirmation, however, is awaited.

Vetrimaaran is now basking in the success of Viduthalai Part 1 . Inspired by real-life events, the movie opened in cinemas in March. And the movie garnered polarising reactions. While some have praised the movie, others felt that it was not as powerful as Vetrimaaran's previous films.

Viduthalai Part 1 is now streaming on Zee5 and you can also watch it on OTTplay Premium .

‘Asuran’ film review: Dhanush and Vetrimaaran’s deadly combo

Going out movie reviews.

The Dhanush-Vetrimaaran combination works wonders in this drama about caste divisions

tabloid!

Sahithya Akademi award winner Poomani’s novel ‘Vekkai’ comes alive on-screen in ‘Asuran.’ The Dhanush-Vetrimaaran combination is like no other and the duo establish this chemistry again with a vendetta tale about caste politics and oppression of the downtrodden.

Set in 1980s in Kovilpetti — a rural region of Thirunelveli — ‘Asuran’ follows the life of Sivasamy (Dhanush), a low caste farmer owning a piece of land. With wife Pachaiyamma (Manju Warrier) and three children — 20-year-old Murugan (Teejay Arunasalam), school-going Chidambaramn (Ken Karunas) and a little girl, Sivasamy is a happy man. Not for long. however...

Trouble brews when the neighbouring landowner, Narasimhan (Aadukalam Naren), a powerful man from an upper caste, desires Sivasamy’s little piece of land as it comes in the way of Narasimhan’s plans of setting up a cement factory.

What begins as an altercation because Pachaiyamma questions Narasimhan’s men for drawing water using a motor from the common well, snowballs into a family feud. Following Narasimhan’s murder one night, Sivasamy’s family is on the run. And closely on their heels baying for their blood are the sons of Narasimhan.

Manju Warrier in Asuran-1570547490254

Hard-hitting and realistic, Vetrimaaran’s ‘Asuran’ reminds us of our shameful past when discrimination on the basis of caste existed as the norm for aeons. Not to forget that we read about incidents of caste discrimination even today in the newspapers.

Dhanush as Sivasamy is terrific. You completely forget the star who depicts Sivasamy from different timelines of his life, the younger one with pencil moustache and impulsive, unlike the older mellowed down Sivasamy. When we are first introduced to Sivasamy, he is a middle-aged man, with stained teeth and greying hair. There is a limp in his gait, too.

Wading through a river in the jungle with his younger son Chidambaram, Sivasamy goes into hiding to escape Narasimhan’s people.

Dhanush in Asuran (1)-1570547478373

Chidambaram idolised his older brother Murugan, who challenged Narasimhan’s bullying and subsequently lost his life in the most macabre manner possible. Chidambaram is pained that his father did nothing to avenge Murugan’s death. He has only contempt for his father.

As the story unfolds, Sivasamy’s past is revealed shattering Chidambaram’s image of his father.

Like Hindi film ‘Article 15’ that explored the exploitation of the Dalits by the upper caste people, ‘Asuran’ follows a similar vein through and through.

In ‘Article 15’, three young Dalit women were raped and two killed for daring to ask for a raise of Rs3 at work, ‘Asuran’ has an entire village wiped out in fire, because Sivasamy dared to challenge the upper caste folks by buying a pair of slippers for his lover Mariamma. Wearing slippers was the sole right of the upper caste people, the lower rung people were entrusted with cleaning their footwear.

When pinned against the wall, it is inevitable but to strike back. Sivasamy’s concern for his family brings out the ‘asuran’ inside both as a young man and later as a middle-aged father.

Manju Warrior on her Tamil debut shines as Sivasamy’s wife, a bold woman. Pasupathy lends good support as her on-screen brother who stands by his sister at all times.

‘Asuran’ leaves you depressed and pondering over man’s inhuman atrocities. With its violence and gore, this is clearly not a film to watch with the family. One scene that sends a shiver down a spine is the one around Murugan’s death. The only happy moment in the film is when the family goes to see a bride for Murugan and the father is teasing his son. It is beautiful.

Velraj’s camera work is amazing. The night scene when Sivasamy and son Murugan follow a wild boar that has entered their field refuses to leave the mind.

‘Asuran’ is appreciated for its content, staging and brilliant performance by all the lead actors, including newcomers Teja Arunasalam and Ken Karunas. And, it ends with a positive message.

Don’t miss it!

‘Asuran’ is now showing across the UAE.

Dhanush, Vetrimaaran to reunite for another project before Vada Chennai 2: report

Actor dhanush and director vetrimaaran were last seen together in tamil gangster drama vada chennai..

Actor Dhanush and filmmaker Vetrimaaran, who have worked together on multiple projects, are all set to reunite for a yet-untitled Tamil project which will be bankrolled by producer Elred Kumar. Last worked together in Tamil gangster drama Vada Chennai, the duo was to reunite for the film’s second part. However, latest reports suggest that they will be coming together for another project.

Dhanush and Varimaaran have worked together in films like Aadukalam and Visaaranai.

As per a report by Tamil entertainment portal Galatta, the project is already in the discussion stage and might happen even before Vada Chennai 2.

Producer Elred Kumar recently announced he’s bankrolling Vetrimaaran’s next Tamil project with actor Soori in the lead. In a recent media interaction, Soori said that he agreed to be a part of the project after hearing just one line of story from Vetrimaaran. “It’s every actor’s dream to work with Vetri sir. When he called and told me he has this story which he’d like to make with me, I didn’t even think for a minute to give my nod. We go on the floors from November.”

Soori didn’t divulge any details regarding the film’s genre but he confirmed that he will be seen in a very different character. Apparently, Vetrimaaran’s film with Soori will be based on Meeran Moideen’s novel Ajnabee, centered on a man who sells balloons for a living.

Vetrimaaran also has a project titled Vaadivasal with Suriya in the offing. The film will go on the floors next year and will most likely materialise after Suriya finishes his film Aruvaa with director Hari. Vetrimaaran will also soon resume shooting Vada Chennai 2, which will be about the rise of Dhanush as an accidental gangster from north Madras.
