About Sussurro

A keen diver, Sussurro's owner had requested phenomenal speed to ensure remote diving areas could be reached in the shortest possible time scale. Feadship's solution was to use two Paxman diesels and twin TF40 gas turbines to drive three water jets. With 15,000 combined horsepower, the all aluminum Sussurro is capable of speeds as high as 46 knots. The deep V hull concept offers superb comfort even at top speed, plus course tracking capabilities more usually found on a Grand Prix circuit.

“The way we design, is we design fully custom, fully unique yachts, we start with a blank piece of paper and we start asking the client how they use the boat, what they want to do on board, what kind of experience they have but we also want input on what kind of styling they like... It’s about getting to learn about the owner and how they want to use the boat.” - Ronno Schouten, Design Manager of De Voogt Naval Architects

Tyumen: from frontier outpost to energy capital

Photos by William Brumfield

Photos by William Brumfield

Photos by William Brumfield Click to stop the slideshow. Click again to continue

Founded in 1586 on the site of an earlier Tatar settlement at the confluence of the Tura and Tyumenka Rivers, Tyumen was the first Russian town in Siberia. The area had been conquered by the Cossack leader Yermak only a few years before as the beginning step of an epochal Russian move across the Ural Mountains into the enormous north Asian land mass. Although its rivers were only tributaries of the Irtysh (itself a tributary of the great Ob River), Tyumen was well situated to utilize Siberia’s vast water network.

Like most early Russian towns in Siberia, Tyumen originally served as a fortified settlement for Cossacks and other troops, who in the 17th century protected newly developing trade routes, particularly with China. When the southern boundary of Moscow’s Asian territory became more settled during the 18th century, Tyumen’s importance increased for the development of transportation as well as small commercial and industrial enterprises. On a more lugubrious note, Tyumen’s status as a transportation nexus involved it in the notorious exile system, which sent thousands of convicts and political exiles throughout the distant reaches of Siberia. As a regional administrative point for western Siberia, Tyumen also became a center of the Russian Orthodox Church. The city’s Trinity Monastery, founded in 1616 on the high right bank of the Tura River and originally dedicated to the Transfiguration, was a modest collection of log buildings until its transformation in the early part of the 18th century by an energetic Ukrainian prelate, Bishop Fedor Leshchinskii. An ally of Peter the Great, Bishop Fedor saw architecture as a reflection of a broad cultural transformation, and the Church of the Trinity that he built at the monastery in 1709-1715 is Tyumen’s earliest surviving building. Gutted during the Soviet era, the Trinity Church is now being restored, as is its neighbor, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul (1741-55). These early examples of a provincial baroque style with Ukrainian features served as a model for other 18th-century churches in Tyumen, culminating with the lavish Cathedral of the Icon of the Sign (Znamenskii), which has recently been splendidly refurbished. Built in several phases between 1768 and 1891, the cathedral displays the florid decoration typical of much of Siberian church architecture.

The daunting vastness of Siberia’s reaches gradually submitted in the 19th century to new forms of transportation. The first steamboat to ply a Siberian river was constructed here in 1838. The greatest impulse for economic growth came with the completion of a railroad from Yekaterinburg, on the east slope of the Ural Mountains. This line ultimately became an important segment of the trans-Siberian railroad, transporting the wealth of Siberia’s forests, mines and new grain farms, as well as leather and other products of local factories. Furthermore, at the turn of the 20th century over half a million settlers passed through the town en route to Siberia’s open agricultural lands.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS; Foreign Investors Win Court Order in Russian Oil Case

By Neela Banerjee

  • Nov. 24, 1999

A prominent foreign investment group won a Siberian court order today to temporarily halt the sale of one of Russia's largest oil producers. It was the latest maneuver in a struggle widely viewed as a test of Russia's respect for the rights of foreign investors.

The Sputnik Fund, which includes such high-profile investors as Harvard University and the financier George Soros, maintains that the sale of the oil producer, Chernogorneft, would cause the demise of the producer's parent company, Sidanko, a bankrupt Russian oil conglomerate.

Sputnik holds a 10 percent stake in Sidanko, as does BP Amoco, the big British-American oil company, which over the last 12 months has struggled to preserve Sidanko and its own half-billion-dollar investment in the Russian oil concern. Sputnik, BP Amoco and some other Chernogorneft creditors say that a rival Russian oil concern, the Tyumen Oil Company, started the bankruptcies and has used the process, reportedly by tampering with the courts, to strip away Sidanko's most valuable assets.

It had been widely predicted that Tyumen Oil would buy Chernogorneft in a court-supervised auction scheduled for Friday, similar to the way Tyumen acquired another Sidanko unit, Kondpetroleum, several weeks ago at a rock-bottom price.

Critics of Tyumen Oil say the company has used the courts to appoint its own people as external managers of bankrupt Sidanko units to swing the auctions in their favor. Tyumen Oil has said it is interested in acquiring Chernogorneft, but it has repeatedly denied accusations of wrongdoing.

In issuing a court order halting the sale, the municipal court in Nizhnyvartovsk, where Chernogorneft is based, affirmed Sputnik's complaints that the oil company obstructed the fund's efforts to get the necessary paperwork to offer its own bid.

There is a widespread belief that Sputnik is acting at the behest of BP Amoco, which has so far been unwilling to engage Tyumen Oil head on. But officials at BP Amoco and Sputnik have said that while the fund has kept BP Amoco informed, Sputnik is working on its own.

Sputnik also filed suit Monday in New York State Supreme Court against Tyumen Oil; one of Tyumen's primary shareholders, Access Industries, Inc.; and the president of Access Industries, Len Blavatnik. The suit contends that Access Industries and Tyumen Oil ''have stolen one of Sidanko's key assets -- Kondpetroleum, an oil production company and are further poised to purloin another Sidanko subsidiary -- Chernogorneft.''

Mr. Blavatnik could not be reached for comment. A Tyumen Oil spokesman declined to comment on the Russian court injunction and the New York court case.

It is unusual for an American court to accept a suit concerning activities overseas. But courts review such cases when the parties involved are United States citizens or when there is reason to believe that the plaintiffs will not get a fair hearing in the jurisdiction where the events are said to have occurred.

The questionable effectiveness of the Russian court order may show why Sputnik has sued in the United States as well. In Russia, court decisions are often difficult to enforce.

BP Amoco officials are hoping that a postponed auction of Chernogorneft would give them more time to press Tyumen Oil to relent in its takeover fight.

''If this allows the bankrupcty process to be reversed and an amicable settlement to be implemented, it would be an encouraging development,'' said Howard Chase, head of external affairs at BP Amoco's Moscow office.

One crucial test will come on Thursday if, at a scheduled meeting, Chernogorneft creditors and the external manager decide to abide by the court order. If the order is ignored, a new round of lawsuits would then begin to thwart the auction, which could drag out the resolution of Sidanko's fate and further sully Russia's questionable reputation among foreign investors.
