Hallberg-Rassy Yachts is a Swedish boat manufacturer that have been building luxury ocean-going sailing yachts since 1943. Founded by Christoph Rassy and Lennart Hallberg in Ellös, Sweden, the Scandinavian brand is renowned for its design, quality, seaworthiness, classic looks and comfortable interiors.

The linked names of two noted sailboat yards on Orust island has an interesting history that started with Harry Hallberg who began building wooden boats at age 14 in 1928 and led to opening his own boatyard in 1943 in Kungsviken on the island of Orust. Harry Hallberg achieved great early success exporting the first P-28s to the USA and was known for his pioneering use of GRP (glass reinforced polyester plastic or fiberglass) and the serial production of sailboats in 1963. He also pioneered the successful build of GRP hulls with wooden superstructure in a series. The success of the Hallberg cruising sailboat models and volume of builds required a larger yard facility, and in the mid-1960s Harry Hallberg moved the business to Ellös further down the southwest coast of Orust island. He retired from business in 1972.

Christoph Rassy, born 1934 in Bavaria, Germany grew up on the lake, Starnberger See. He built model boats and wooden sailing boats at a young age, and then apprenticed at a yard in southern Germany. In 1960 he relocated to Sweden for better boat-building opportunities. Eventually he was able to start his own business and by strange coincidence, Christoph Rassy bought the boatyard and shed in Kungsviken where Harry Hallberg started out, after Harry had moved to the larger facility he had built in Ellös. Though they had businesses on the same island in Sweden, they were never partners, rather competitors from 1965-1972. Christoph Rassy built one-off cruising sailboats designed by leading Swedish designer, Olle Enderlein. His boats were built entirely of mahogany and took a year to complete.

The 1966 Rasmus 35 long distance cruiser that featured a powerful engine and center cockpit protected by a windshield that was thought of as pioneering back then and the 35ft length was considered huge for a sailboat! This early design has been with Hallberg-Rassy yachts to this day and is taken for granted on a cruising yacht.

The two yards were combined after Harry Hallberg retired in 1972, and his yard in Ellös became available for sale. At that time, the Hallberg yard was producing four models of GRP with mahogany superstructure—Mistral 33, Mistress 32, P-28, and the 24ft Misil II, and all except the P-28, were designed by Olle Enderlein. The Rassy yard purchased Harry Hallberg’s yard in 1972 and renamed the business, Hallberg-Rassy, as the Hallberg brand was better known.

The Hallberg-Rassy Monsun 31, built in 1973 through 1982, was the bestseller, with highest number of units built to date. Then the Hallberg-Rassy 41 became a trendsetter with a true functional walk-through to the aft cabin below deck—a proven optimal layout for a center cockpit yacht with stem to stern free passage below deck on one level, along with elegant lines and exquisite woodwork. Galley placement was starboard near the entry steps, allowing full headroom and safety at sea, out of the main walk-through area. Now mainstream, its size and outfitting with pressurized water, hot water, shower, electronic anchor winch, headsail furling system, two heads and powerful engine, were considered trendsetting in ultimate comfort at that time. Over 100 units were built from 1975 – 1979, and until 1981. The Hallberg-Rassy 38 designed in 1976-77 featured a higher freeboard and the blue stripe around the hull that became a signature feature of Hallberg-Rassy sailboats, beginning with the Hallberg-Rassy 352. The trendsetting feature of walk-through to aft cabin and the boat’s especially elegant lines made the 352 extremely successful, with 800 built to 1989. Characteristic of the Hallberg-Rassys of the late 1970s and 1980s were the contemporary lines and design features of an elegant teak deck, modern and easy to handle rigging, ample cabin space, and beautiful woodwork.

In 1983, next-generation 16-year-old Magnus Rassy designed and built the experimental, “Rassker,” with high-tech aramid fiber and Divinycell for hull construction. It also featured an external lead keel and stern with swim platform. The 26ft “Rassker” won a lot of races, proving its design performance! The Olle Enderlein design period ended in 1984 with the Hallberg-Rassy 382. Keels were no longer molded into a GRP encapsulated sump after this model, which was built to 1992. The noted innovation of the 1985 Hallberg-Rassy 49 was the two armchairs that were built into the saloon, which had not been seen on a yacht before, that has now become commonplace on yachts built all over the world. Another concept boat designed by Magnus was built in 1987—the 35ft Rassker Magnum. Although they were not produced and marketed, Magnus’ boats provided concepts for future development of production boats, particularly the Hallberg-Rassy 34.

In 1988, noted superyacht designer, Germán Frers, one of the most talented yacht designers in the world, began working with Hallberg-Rassy to produce cruising yachts with ultra-elegant lines, performance, and ease of handling in combination with the sturdiness, seaworthiness, comfort, safety, and fine woodwork craftsmanship for which Hallberg-Rassy was world-renowned. The Frers-designed Hallberg-Rassy 34 combined the best of the Rasker Magnum with greatly improved performance, comfort, and a contemporary spin on a classic style. Launched in 1990, it was a commercial success and became a template for an entire new generation of Hallberg-Rassys.

In 1992 a new flagship, the Hallberg-Rassy 53 was launched and produced until 2006. And in 1998, a larger flagship, the Hallberg-Rassy 62 premiered in the Düsseldorf boat show and were built until 2011, at which time the Hallberg-Rassy 64 became the new flagship and the largest sailboat at the Düsseldorf 2011 Show. The 64 featured “Push Button Sailing” for easy management by a family crew, a large aft deck locker capable of storing a dinghy, and hydraulic fold-down swim platform. The largest aft cockpit built by Hallberg-Rassy is the Hallberg-Rassy 412 offering twin aft cabins for the first time and the extremely efficient in-mast furling mainsail named “Fat Furl” by Magnus Rassy. Performance without sacrificing luxury comfort, the 412 wins races. Awarded Sailboat of the Year 2013 in Sweden, in the luxury category. Premiered at Boot Düsseldorf in 2017, the Hallberg-Rassy 44 is the first Hallberg-Rassy to feature twin rudder blades and integrated bow nose for code sails.

The Hallberg-Rassy 48 is one of the great classic bluewater yachts produced by the Hallberg Rassy yard on the Island of Orust in Sweden. The Hallberg-Rassy 48 is based on its successful predecessor, the Hallberg-Rassy 46. A total of 90 Hallberg-Rassy 48 hulls were delivered between 2004-2020. The 48 hull is just slightly longer, but the waterline is extended by 1.35m, allowing for improved sailing performance.

The Hallberg-Rassy 48 is set up for being easy to handle by a small crew. The well protected, typical center cockpit features a fixed wind screen, a protective sprayhood and a sprayhood extension that allows you to sail fully protected in cold and rainy weather conditions. The larger windows in the coach roof offer good natural light and a good outer view from the interior.

Below decks you will find a large owner’s aft cabin, a longitude galley, a comfortable navigation area, two forward guest cabins and two heads with shower compartments.

Hallberg-Rassy 48, KAROLINE is probably one of the least used Hallberg-Rassy 48’s. KAROLINE has always been stored inside during the winter season. She has been sailed for seven seasons in Scandinavian waters and spent four summer seasons inside a winter shed.

Since 2017, when her current, second owner bought the yacht, she has had several relevant updates at Vindö Marin, in order to be prepare her for circumnavigation.

KAROLINE is now in mint condition and ready to go anywhere. Currently located inside a heated wither storage hall and ready to be launched in spring 2024.

MAJOR LEAP FOR EFFORTLES CRUISING - CARBON FURLING MAST

Hallberg-Rassy and Seldén are tweaking the concept of cruising by blending it with a great deal of performance. Carbon in-mast furling now takes PushButtonSailing to a completely new level. This set-up reduces the heeling and the weather helm to a minimum and improves up-wind performance. LOTS OF VOLUME, COMFORT AND STORAGE

Traditionally we are used to comparing boats with hull length in feet. But much more relevant is the waterline length. The new 50 has a waterline that is as much as 50 cm / 1’ 8’’ longer than on the Hallberg-Rassy 55. Longer waterline gives better sailing performance with longer average day runs and at the same time more interior volume, comfort and storage under deck. The width is 33 cm larger at the widest point and an incredible 1.08 m wider than the 55 on the transom. That further enhances interior volume and storage.

SOFT MOTION IN A SEAWAY

The modern and most efficient hull shape gives superior sailing performance. At the same time, the forward under water part of the hull is rounded, almost like an egg, and this means soft motion in a seaway at any angle of heel. The displacement of the hull is designed to carry all modern comfort equipment and lots of personal belongings, as well as generous tank capacity.

BIG AND WELL PROTECTED COCKPIT

Typical Hallberg-Rassy, the cockpit is very well sheltered with high all-round coamings and a soft top or hard top windscreen with tempered glass, opening mid section and handholds at the sides. This is the ideal cockpit solution for both hot and cold areas. There is good all-round visibility. With twin wheels, there is both lots of space for displays and buttons and an easy passage from the helm position and forward. Furthermore, the wheel positions give better visibility forward, both when maneuvering in a harbour and to see the tell tails of the headsail. There is an optional big fixed high gloss varnished wooden table with drop leaves.

MODERN AND EASY TO HANDLE SAIL PLAN

The rig is modern and easy to handle. It is even possible to fly an inner removable heavy weather sail with no runners. The foresail is only slightly overlapping, making tacking easy. There is also an option for a self tacking jib arrangement. Seldén electric furling for both in-mast and headsail, as well as electric sheet winches are fitted as standard. The main is designed to carry an Elvström FatFurl modern in-mast furling sail with Epex membrane, with roach, vertical battens and headboard. The top shrouds and lowers are to separate chain plates, a Hallberg-Rassy invention, which makes passage on deck easy, and arranges for easy sheeting of the headsail. The spreader base gets wide and stable in that way too. The deck plan is clean and uncluttered.

LOTS OF DECK STORAGE

The deck storage is generous. There is not only an enormous deck locker between the forward cabin and the chain locker, there are also two top opening deck lockers aft, one locker in the cockpit and good storage for fenders and ropes also above the chain locker.

TWIN RUDDERS

The steering system has twin rudders, superior both in terms of control when sailing, as well as pleasant vibration free motoring and also from a safety perspective.

ONE LEVEL SOLE

The interior sole is at one level throughout the boat. This gives easy movement both at sea and at anchor or in a marina.

BRIGHT AND AIRY INTERIOR WITH LOTS OF STORAGE

The interior has lots of natural light and indirect led lights as well. There is good ventilation. The layout is generous and roomy, with lots of elbow room. The storage facilities are generous too. The sturdy woodwork has the well renowned Hallberg-Rassy finish.

GENEROUS STANDARD EQUIPMENT

The sail away standard equipment list is very extensive, including for example electric in-mast furling and electric headsail furler, sails, PU teak deck, retractable bow thruster from Sleipner Side-Power, a 12 kW generator, a 110 HP main engine, electric cooking, fridge and freezer, launching and rigging at the yard, antifouling, fenders, mooring lines and a lot more.

WALK-IN ENGINE ROOM

There is a large walk-in engine room. Easy access, easy maintenance and careful sound insulation covered by aluminium linings. There is access from a big door on the port side, as well as a lifting stair in front and a removable panel in the aft end of the engine room. Furthermore, the floor in the cockpit is bolted and removable. In the engine room the technical equipment is found: a powerful common rail main engine, the generator with sound shield, pumps, filters, double heaters, AquaDrive flexible coupling to take up the loads from the engine shaft and further lower vibrations and noise. The engine room lighting is 24 v, and there is also a powerful optional 230 v led light. The Mastervolt Combi Pro charger/inverter automatically and quickly changes between shore power and inverter, depending on what is available.

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Zefira is the largest vessel crafted by Fitzroy Yachts to date. The Dubois designed vessel was built to exceptional quality levels which continue the yards reputation for building award winning superyachts. Powered by a Caterpillar C32 1450 bhp main engine and a Hundested variable pitch propeller, the propulsion system provides long range motor sailing abilities. The 56 meter ‘light weight’ carbon fiber sailing rig was supplied by Southern Spars, and the sails inventory provided by North Sails.

The Dubois designed fast cruising sloop Zefira, built under the project or model name x50 was crafted to exceptional standards which continue the yards reputation for building award winning superyachts.

Sailing Yacht Zefira boasts excellent technical performance and features beautiful lines. Her aluminium hull is painted a stylish light grey and she measures 49.7m with a beam of 9.95m. Zefira is powered by a Caterpillar C32 1450 bhp main engine and a Hundested variable pitch propeller, the propulsion system provides long range motor sailing abilities. The 56 meter ‘light weight’ carbon fiber sailing rig was supplied by Southern Spars, and the sails inventory provided by North Sails.

Costruita in Nuova Zelanda nei cantieri Fitzroy, ha uno scafo in alluminio e una trave con un raggio di quasi dieci metri. Gli interni sono stati disegnati da Remi Tessier e possono ospitare otto ospiti in quattro cabine.
