Six of the coolest features on board Tankoa's recently-sold Grey

The new 49.8-metre motor yacht Grey has been sold with Jean-Claude Carme of TWW Yachts representing the seller and the buying broker wishing to remain anonymous. Her new name is expected to be Jimmy . She had a last known asking price of €36,500,000 and was offered for sale in a near-new state, having been delivered in 2023. She is an S501 model with sisterships including Kinda and Olokun . 

Her Francesco Paszkowski exterior sports a "whisper grey" hull and a "jet black" superstructure, earning her a place as a finalist in the Outstanding Exterior Design category in the BOAT Design & Innovation Awards 2024. Grey 's interior styling was completed by Giorgio Cassetta .

1. The forward pool with "magic seats"

One key departure from Grey 's sisterships is the foredeck, which features a larger-than-usual glass-sided swimming pool. It is located in the bow and is flanked by what TWW describes as "magic seats" and lounge seating. Better still, the pool faces a 144-inch retractable cinema screen which transforms the bow into an outdoor theatre... 

2. The outdoor home cinema screen worth around $ 298,000 

 Her 144' C-seed outdoor cinema is capable of completely retracting and folding away and is estimated to be worth around $233,000 . Integrated speakers are placed around the pool for a supreme audio experience - the broker commented that the "incredible sound system" by the French-British brand Focal/Naim is "not something you encounter very often" and is fitted throughout the vessel. 

3. The sundeck Jacuzzi with one of the largest single pieces of black agate found on any yacht

A particular highlight is the large Jacuzzi located on the sundeck, offering unobstructed sea views and shade from the midday sun thanks to the awning. There is ample lounging space and sunpads, while a backlit agate bar is located aft of the deck. The bar, according to Cassetta, is the largest single slab of backlit agate on any yacht in the fleet.

4. Glass-bottomed balconies in the owner's suite

Offering a little more privacy, the owner's suite is fitted with two fold-down balconies – an extension of the yacht's indoor-outdoor theme. The balconies are fitted with a glass floor, perfect for watching sea life below. Tables and chairs can easily be arranged in the space, providing a lovely spot for a coffee or cocktails. In total, Grey (now Jimmy ) can accommodate a party of 12, with an owner's suite and a VIP cabin on the main deck. The lower deck contains two twin and two double cabins, with further quarters for nine crew.

5. An extensive use of glass

The interior benefits from enlarged windows in the open-plan saloon and dining area, while glass bulwarks on the main deck offer uninhibited sea views. This bright ambience is aided by the use of neutral-toned upholstery and carpets with cushions in a symphony of ocean blues scattered throughout the saloon and cabins.

6. Five outdoor spaces

With the pool forward and large Jacuzzi on the sundeck, Grey offers guests a choice of five outdoor spaces, spread over 300 square metres of deck, to dine or relax on. On the upper deck aft is a shaded al fresco dining area and at beach club level a large swim platform offers easy ocean access. 

In terms of numbers, the MCA-compliant, 499GT yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and cruising speed of 15 knots under her twin 1,400hp MAN diesel engines.

Tankoa delivers 50m s501 superyacht grey.

The 49.99-metre motor yacht GREY has been delivered by the Tankoa shipyard in Genoa, Italy, as the latest unit in the yard’s S501 series. The owner signed the new-build contract in July 2021 and appointed TWW Yachts as project managers. GREY will be used privately after her owner takes delivery on 12May 2023.

Despite being part of the Tankoa S501 series, GREY is substantially different from her sisterships and the three-deck layout, devised by exterior designer Francesco Paszkowski, was heavily customised to meet her owners’ needs.

In addition to the standard features that come with the timeless Tankoa S501 series design, the owner added a spectacular outdoor home cinema screen. This high-definition and high-luminosity screen is located in front of the swimming pool lounge on the foredeck. GREY is also fitted with a top-of-the-range sound system designed by the award-winning French/British brand Focal & Naim has been fitted throughout the yacht.

The owner also gave attention to the design of the exterior decks and the four open lounging and entertainment spaces available. With alfresco living a key element of her design, GREY features a large Jacuzzi on the fly deck alongside seating and lounging areas as well as a pool on the foredeck.

TWW Yachts supported the owner throughout the entire build process from the initial specification reviews to delivery. “We are particularly proud of GREY, and she has been designed and built for the most charming and passionate owners that a yacht broker and project managers can only dream of representing in a new-build project,” says lead broker at TWW Yachts, Jean-Claude Carme.

Giorgio Cassetta worked closely with the owner to create a luxurious and sophisticated interior. Together they created a warm and inviting look and feel, making great use of an array of natural materials, such as rich woods and veined marbles. The interior also benefits from enlarged windows on the main deck, glass bulwarks and fold-out balconies to heighten the all-important indoor-outdoor connection.

“This interior is one of the finest I have ever seen on any yacht of this size,” adds David Westwood, principal partner of TWW Yachts. The six suites onboard GREY – including two customised suites on the main deck – can accommodate up to 12 overnight guests. There is also space for up to nine crew.

“Our usual flexibility in satisfying customer requests is evident in the customisations made to GREY – such as the installation of a swimming pool in the bow, and the fantastic and never seen before cinema / sound system fitted just in front of the pool. The jet black and whisper grey paint gives a sleek look to GREY,” says Giuseppe Mazza, Tankoa sales and marketing manager.

The Tankoa S501 series sits at 499GT and has a “light alloy 5083” aluminium hull and superstructure. She will soon join sisterships VERTIGE, BINTADOR, KINDA and OLOKUN at sea. The owner opted for the conventional propulsion package offered by Tankoa, which will deliver a top speed of 18 knots if using both the main diesel engines for propulsion and one diesel generator for the hotel load.

Highly customised 49.99m (164ft) motor yacht GREY has been delivered to her new owners from the boutique shipyard, Tankoa in Genoa. She is the latest hull from the Tankoa S501 series and has been under contract with the owner since July 2021.

Superyacht GREY has been designed by Francesco Paszkowsk i to very precise requirements from the owner, setting her apart from other in the series. Her tri-deck design features a spectacular outdoor home cinema screen, located in from of the foredeck swimming pool and lounge. This high-definition and high-luminosity screen comes in addition to a top-of-the-range sound system throughout, designed by Forcal & Nain. With alfresco living a key element of her design, GREY features a Jacuzzi on the fly deck alongside seating and lounge areas as well as a pool on the foredeck plus other entertainment spaces.

Internally, the attention to detail is clear with luxurious and sophisticated spaces design by Giorgio Maria Cassetta . In close collaboration with the owner they have created a warm and inviting look features natural materials, rich wood and classic marble. The large-scale windows, glass bulwarks and fold-out balconies create a sense of light and space with fabulous indoor-outdoor connection.

Some expedition yachts are built to look pretty. Others boast new technology. Grey Wolf is an outlier, created with a single mission in mind: to achieve long-distance cruising and access inaccessible areas, while igniting fire in the bellies of adventure-hungry travelers, including the owner.

The 78-footer is like an explorer that returns from the North Pole with frostbitten fingers, a gaunt face and icicles on the beard—as opposed to the tourist who does the trip on an “expedition” cruise ship, sporting a barely used, bright-colored parka and five extra pounds because the buffet was so good.

Grey Wolf has both the looks and chops to claim true explorer status. Her maiden voyage after launch in New Zealand was a cruise to New Caledonia, onto Fiji and Tahiti, across to Chile and down to Antarctica. Now, the owner of the salty, 78-footer has the Northwest Passage in his sights.

Designed by Steve Dashew as part of his Functional Power Boat (FPB) series, and built by Circa Marine in New Zealand, Grey Wolf has circumnavigated the world twice since her 2017 delivery. “Grey” represents the bare aluminum hull, which has been left unfaired for practical purposes. Plus, it just looks rugged, even cool. “Wolf” reflects the yacht’s wild, robust capabilities.

Her owner, Peter Watson, who previously owned a Dashew-designed FPB64, was intimately involved in Grey Wolf ‘s build from the start. “A second FPB owner and I worked closely together on three hulls at the same time,” Watson told Robb Report . “Our goal was to be able to go anywhere.”

The boat’s attributes include an ice-class hull for navigating polar regions, long-range and economical cruising up to 5,100 nautical miles, and easy maintenance. Pressure washing the bare aluminum hull every year is a more practical and cheaper option than painting it every five years.

Grey Wolf has the highest safety rating of CAT O by the Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA), meaning the boat is unrestricted on where it’s allowed to cruise. Watson likes the compact size, too. It keeps crew costs down, but more importantly, with a shallow 6.5-foot draft, Grey Wolf can anchor close to shore and access small ports where larger boats can’t.

Inside, three spacious ensuite guest cabins and panoramic windows offer views out to sea from every corner. Four crew are accommodated on charter, but as a qualified captain Watson often likes to take the helm.

Since qualifying as an ice pilot in Finland, he’s captained the boat to the Antarctic peninsula twice. He also cites a trip to the island of Vanuatu hidden deep in the Pacific Ocean as one of his most memorable moments. “We visited the volcano, saw some local tribal ceremonies,” he said. “The people are so loving and generous. It’s a place that feels truly untouched.”

Redundancy is a key part of Grey Wolf ‘s design. The boat has two helms—one on the “Matrix Deck” or flybridge, the other in the “Great Room” or main salon, just forward of the dining area.

While that’s not unusual, Watson mandated numerous backup systems so Grey Wolf would never be stranded when a marine mechanic is thousands of miles away. “I steer by autopilot, but I can override that and electrically control the steering. If that failed, I go to hydraulic steering, and after that I’ve got a tiller,” he says. “I don’t think I’ll ever need four modes, but if I’m in the middle of nowhere with no support, I can get somewhere safe.”

During Covid when the world went dark, Grey Wolf largely stayed in port, except for a few  weekend trips to local islands. Since Watson spends around 50 percent of his time on board—including one nine-month stretch—the first year of Covid was taxing. His happy place is in the upstairs helm spotting wildlife. It’s an interest that peaked in Antarctica when a pod of orcas swam around the boat’s dinghy.

“I was quite frightened because I thought they’ve only got to push this and we’ll be in the water,” he says. “But they were just amazing. A real once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Watson designed Grey Wolf with adventure charters in mind, though he only allows two to three charters a year; this year, one lasted four weeks. The boat was due to explore Norway this summer, cruising through its northwestern fjords, though that was cancelled at the last minute.

Winter will likely see the yacht laid up—“it’s not really a Caribbean-style boat,” he says—but next summer, the plan is to head to Scotland, Norway, Svalbard and Greenland, before ticking off Watson’s bucket-list destination, the Northwest passage.

“It needs a lot of planning, but I want to bring a charter there,” he says, noting British Columbia will be the second stop on that trip. “They’re two places I’m keen to visit with Grey Wolf ,” he says. “You can’t find many 78-footers that can reach those kind of remote areas.”
