Exumas Yacht Charter

The Exumas Islands are located within the greater Bahamas Island chain  of the Caribbean Sea. An Exumas yacht charter vacation is about natural beauty and untouched isolated ecology. The Islands stretch over 100 miles and are made up of 365 Cays and they remain reasonably untouched by man. They are one of the most pristine yacht charter cruising grounds in the world for luxury yachts, both motor and sailing, and are certainly one of the best in the Caribbean .

The Exumas are the site of the world’s first marine replenishment nursery established in 1958. The Exumas Land and Sea Park is 175 square miles and the host dozens of superb reef sites. The area has outstanding anchorages and even more outstanding dive sites making it a superb choice for a charter vacation.

With a population of just 3,540 people most of the islands within the Exumas chain are actually uninhabited (apart from the sunbathing Iguanas). This stunning chain of islands is surrounded by crystal clear waters, shallow sandy shoals and spectacular reefs teeming with wildlife. A lot of the islands have beautiful white sand beaches. Whilst there are not any bareboats to rent in the Exumas there are a bunch of luxury Crewed Sailing Yachts and Power Yachts available and a crewed charter is a magnificent way of seeing this beautiful and remote destination.

There is also a plethora of wildlife to encounter – from the friendly nurse sharks at Compass Cay to the giant iguanas at Allen’s Cay and the now famous swimming pigs at Big Major’s Spot. You can also discover gourmet restaurants tucked away on private islands and some famously fun bars.

Shroud Cay to Warderick Wells

Wake up at peaceful Shroud Cay and feel as if you’ve gone to heaven. After breakfast, tender in to explore the tidal creek, which serves as a nursery for birds, sea turtles and fish. Cruise to Warderick Wells, home to the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park. Kids can “discover” the skeleton of a 53ft sperm whale that washed up long ago.

Runners should also rejoice – there are more than seven miles of trails to explore on shore.

Warderick Wells to Staniel Cay

You arrive at Bell Cay as you’re waking up, just in time for a morning dip at the Aquarium. You will soon see why this snorkel site earned its name as you’ll be surrounded by fish. Then head over to Compass Cay, where you can swim with the friendly nurse sharks that are found off the docks. After that you can lunch on the divine burgers served here. Sunset cocktails and dinner can be enjoyed on the private island of Fowl Cay in the Hill House restaurant, with its 360 degree views of the surrounding islands. Spend the night at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club marina.

Staniel Cay

Colorful, overwater cottages dot the shore at Staniel Cay. This picturesque island is the jumping-off point for more adventures: visit Thunderball Grotto, made famous by James Bond, and see the popular swimming pigs at nearby Big Major’s Spot.

Use the tender to explore cays that larger yachts can’t reach, and the crew will set up a picnic lunch on a sandbar. Visit the new Staniel Cay Yacht Club restaurant for dinner and a late-night tipple.

Exumas Cruising Guide: Our Favorite Bahamas Sailing Destination

Planning for your exumas bareboat charter.

Exumas bahamas cruising guide resources, exumas cruising conditions.

• Explore the northern Exumas, turning around near Staniel Cay (this is what we recommend!) . There is so much to explore that you won't miss out by missing the southern Exumas.
• Do a one way trip from Great Exuma to Nassau. This takes advantage or the prevailing trade winds out of the east - enjoy that downwind sailing. It does, however, complicate provisioning since Great Exuma is not as well stocked. You will also need to coordinate extra logistics to travel to Georgetown for the start of your trip.
• One way from Nassau to Great Exuma. This makes provisioning easier, but you are more likely to sail to windward.

When to sail in the Exumas?

• Consistent trade winds blow out of the east to southeast, allowing for more settled cruising conditions
• Cold fronts are not as common.  This means fewer squalls and potential exposure to westerly/northerly winds
• Days are longer, giving you more time for fun on the water
• Although early tropical activity can occur, it is far less likely
• It's less busy since many of the full-time cruisers have begun to leave the area in preparation for hurricane season
