Best Ocean Boats: Types and Brands to Buy

What makes a good ocean boat ? It’s a valid question, commonly asked, but as with many boating questions, there is no one answer. In fact, there is no best ocean boat either. Only the best ocean-going boat for you and what you want it to do. Whether it’s offshore fishing, sailing around the world, coastal cruising, or extended voyages, there will be good boats for the task—and others, not so good. 

Of course there are many characteristics that ocean-going boats will need to have that are different from those designed to ply gentler inland waters where breaking seas, long distances, and inclement weather rarely if ever are a factor. Here we’ll take a look at the types of boats that are designed for the ocean and also look at some of the best ocean boat brands on the market today. 

What Characteristics Do the Best Ocean Boats Have?

Seaworthy in open water and stormy weather: A boat tackling ocean waters needs to be sturdy enough, large enough, and/or nimble enough to navigate the bigger seas and stronger winds that can arise. If you’re tackling oceans, you’ll typically want a boat that is 20 feet long or larger and built with strength. It’s important to know your boat’s limitations, to check the weather carefully before venturing out, and prepare accordingly. Knowing your boat’s range—is it a long-distance, bluewater voyager or a day-sailing coastal boat?—is also key to staying safe. 

Deep-V hulls and deep draft: Most ocean-going boats have deep-V hulls and adequate draft to provide extra stability in turbulent waters, high waves, and bad weather. An exception to that are multihulls, which can offer excellent stability thanks to their multiple hulls and wide shape. In addition to a deep V hull, ocean-going boats are often designed with strakes—molded lines running down the hull of motorboats that help them reach planing speed and reduce the slap from large waves. If you don’t plan to venture offshore or undertake long voyages, a shallow or modified V hull is often ideal for more coastal ocean cruising in shallower waters. 

Corrosion resistance : In contrast to fresh water, salt water is highly corrosive and damaging to boats, and they need to be designed for and maintained to cope with those damaging effects (see our guide to the differences between saltwater and freshwater boats for more advice). Boats designed for salt water will have marine-grade metals such as stainless steel, and must be built with corrosion-resistant hardware.  

Power and fuel capacity : If you’re going to cruise farther, it makes sense that your boat will need a fuel-efficient engine as well as a larger fuel tank to allow you to carry on longer without refueling. Fast boats such as those used for offshore fishing commonly have large powerful engines, allowing you to get to the offshore fishing grounds in less time. For those crossing oceans, sailboats have long been the boat of choice since wind-power is free, if occasionally finicky. 

Sleeping and storage capacity: If you’re cruising long distances, you’ll need to ensure that you have enough cabin space, living space, and storage space for supplies to accommodate all those on board. Bunks will typically be fitted with lee cloths to securely hold sleeping crew members in their berths. Ventilation is also critical, allowing fresh air below decks without bringing sea water along at the same time.

The choice of sailboat is endless, but it depends how far you want to travel as to how big a sailboat you’ll need. Unlike the fishing vessels from which they draw their name, this new breed of power-cruising yacht typically offers extensive living space, home comforts, and even luxury living, which is highly regarded among many cruising great distances or spending extended periods of time living aboard.

Center Console Boats

  Center consoles boats are high-powered vessels, commonly used for offshore fishing due to their open deck layout allowing for 360 fishability. Fast, stable, roomy, and well-equipped, they are wonderfully versatile and are available from trailerable 17-foot models up to 45 feet and longer, with cabins and heads. They are typically able to handle big seas and weather, but don’t have the sleeping, living, and storage space of longer-range types of ocean boats.

These boats helped develop the coastal and river trade, generated the fishing industry, and even obstructed the rumrunners during World War II. Although, the Leek family’s historical boats have little in common with today’s Oceans Yachts, it’s the rich background and spirited determination that the Leek family possessed that help produce the quality yachts we see today. Throughout the years, Oceans Yachts has lived up to the Leek name by building boats for over 14 generations, but was eventually sold the Egg Harbor Group and Viking Yachts making the brand sail on. Egg Harbor Group, a highly respected company, owns some of the country’s most popular yacht brands for some time. Adding the Ocean brand to its fleet only makes the name succeed even more by continuing the tradition of Ocean Yachts and their top of the line vessels.

Displayed with speed, style, and space the 65’ Odyssey is one of the largest in the Ocean Yachts fleet. Offering ample storage and agile speed, the 65’ was built to attract customers who know a finely built yacht. Based on the 62’ Super Sport hull, the 65’ features plenty of stowage, a pilothouse-style helm, bluewater performance and the interior volume of a motoryacht similarly sized making this one of Ocean’s most notable models. Ocean’s intentions have always been to attract customers that can appreciate a fine design and this is no exception. With an enclosed flying bridge, this yacht has a more clubhouse-feel than an actual helm. This 90,000 pound vessel is enjoyed by any type of party by having a ship like helm, with twin deep-cushion pedestal chairs, a L-shape settee, wet bar, refrigerator and flat-screen TV, as well as having a luxurious salon below for more special occasions. Not only is this boat visually stunning, but also turns heads with its quiet engines while cruising at 26 knots. At 125 square feet, the cockpit is partially covered and includes seating, a table and deep stowage facilities equipped for the hard-core fishermen. The interior of the 65 is almost apartment-like, filled with décor of a subtle class. Teak joinery compliments the soft fabric hues and each social area is joined together by an open passageway and stairs. Consisting of either two or four staterooms, the 65’s layout is inviting and suitable for any guest on board.    

62 Super Sport

While being a sporty ride, this Ocean yacht was built to run a smooth performance on all types of seas. The 62’ Super Sport does not disappoint by running as fast offshore in the seas as it did on the smoother waterways of the Intracoastal. Reaching up to 38 knots, this vessel is suitable for all parties – especially those that fish. With its fishing amenities being the right ones and well placed, this yacht is fully equipped for any fishing voyage. Some features include a sturdy tackle of drawers, freshwater and raw-water washdowns, a large bait freezer, and a bait-prep station containing a sink. The enclosed flybridge boasts with its luxurious, comfortable elements including a helm and companion seats, an L-shaped lounge with table, a wet bar with refrigerator/icemaker, and a color TV making another extremely spacious and pleasant social place as if it was another salon. 56 Super Sport

The 56 Super Sport is just another fabulous edition to the mighty Oceans famous fleet. A downsized version of the popular Ocean 60 Super Sport, the 56 displays an identical flybridge, spacious three-stateroom interior, and a fully rigged cockpit. Styled with beauty and innovation in mind, this yacht features a three-head, three-stateroom floor plan, a galley and dinette situated above the salon on the deckhouse level, and headroom up to 6 ½ ft throughout the whole interior. White Marlin Open 2024: Everything you need to know about Ocean City's big tournament

T he White Marlin Open is just two weeks away, as the world's largest billfish tournament is set to go for it's 51st year. As one of the staples of Ocean City summers, there will be plenty to look forward to this year.

The White Marlin Open is known for attracting hundreds of boats, plenty of fans and even a few celebrities who look to compete for a piece of the millions in prize money that is on the line each year. And the 2024 tournament will likely provide the same thrills when the catches come to the scales.

Here is everything you need to know for the 2024 edition of the White Marlin Open:

When is the 2024 White Marlin Open?

The 2024 White Marlin Open will be held from Aug. 5-9 in Ocean City, Maryland.

Where are the scales in Ocean City?

Weigh-ins at White Marlin Open will be held each afternoon at the Harbour Island Marina from 4-9:15 p.m., where anglers will bring their catches to the scales and in front of fans.

General Rules and Regulations of the tournament

Each boat and/or angler is allowed to fish for a maximum of three out of the tournament's five days. Boats must declare their non-fishing day before 8 a.m. each day the boat is not fishing, except for Friday. No non-fishing day reporting is required for Friday.

Fishing hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

The six categories of fish have minimum weights and/or length requirements that need to be met in order to qualify. The requirements are as followed:

• White Marlin - 70 pounds and 70 inches
• Blue Marlin - 114 inches, no minimum weight. In order to be eligible for weighing, a blue marlin must meet the minimum length, and the winner will be determined by weight.
• Swordfish - 60 inches, no minimum weight. In order to be eligible for weighing, a blue marlin must meet the minimum length, and the winner will be determined by weight.
• Tuna - 50 pounds
• Dolphin - 20 pounds
• Wahoo - 40 pounds

Boats and Prize Money

Last year's White Marlin Open was the tournament's 50th anniversary, and it saw 400 boats compete for $10.3 million dollars, which was a world record amount of prize money.

Delmarva Now will provide live coverage throughout the week, with live blogs, leaderboards, photo galleries and social media updates.

The scales at Harbour Island Marina are open to onlookers who want to see the boats and that come in to weigh their catches. And there will also be the Marlin Fest in Ocean City where there will be a live stream of what's happening at the scales.

Two people were thrown into the ocean after a whale landed on their fishing boat off the New Hampshire coast on Tuesday morning, and the entire incident was caught on video.

"We didn't see him for a couple of minutes, and then the next thing we knew, he popped up and landed right on the transom of the boat," said Gregg Paquette of Groveland.

Paquette was aboard the fishing boat with Ryland Kenney of Dover, New Hampshire.

"I just looked up and just kind of saw the boat tipping, and I said, 'The only way to avoid this is to just kind of jump horizontally away,'" said Kenney.

Wyatt Yager, 19, of Maine, said he and his brother Colin, 16, were fishing about one mile off the New Hampshire coast because they were looking for pogies. Colin spotted the whale and began recording, with his video showing Wyatt in the foreground.

"I saw it go up so I was just lucky enough to be facing the right direction," Colin Yager said.

"I saw it come up and I was just like, 'Oh, it's going to hit the boat,' and then it kind of started to flip," said Wyatt Yager.

"When I turned, the whale's head was already landing on the engine," said Paquette. "So when I saw that, then all of a sudden, I look down, the boat is pitching up, the transom is going down into the water."

"Everything seemed like in slow motion. It was really weird," Kenney said. "Everyone was like, 'Oh, it was eight seconds. How'd you move so fast?' But it was almost slow motion, like a movie."

Yager's video shows the whale breaching, propelling fish out of the water. As the massive animal's mouth closes, it flops over onto the rear of the nearby fishing boat with two men aboard.

One of the men jumped and the other was thrown overboard as their boat rolled, and the Yager brothers said they helped pull them out of the water. Luckily, no one was seriously injured.

"Truly grateful to them," said Paquette. "They were making the video, dropped everything, zoomed right over and plucked us out."

"It's kind of a miracle that I'm alive," said Kenney. "I don't know what was going through my head. Just, kind of, survival."

A statement from the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that the agency received a mayday call after the whale caused the 23-foot center console boat to capsize. The Coast Guard also confirmed that the men who were on the boat were recovered by other boaters and brought to Great Bay Marina.

Sara Morris of the University of New Hampshire Shoals Marine Laboratory said the whale was likely lunge feeding when it came in contact with the boat.

"I think one of the key things is that when whales are sighted to encourage boaters to keep their distance," Morris said. "The whales are moving around underwater and coming up, potentially in an area different from where they went down, and we want to give them as much leeway as we possibly can to avoid a situation like what you see here."
