This board is an ultra-low riding longboard that provides ultimate stability which makes it ideal for downhill carving. It has a maple laminate deck with reverse kingpin longboard trucks and 245-millimeter (mm) axles. The ease of pushing decreases the wear and tear and makes commuting a breeze.

The cost ranges from $90 to $100 on  Amazon , and it comes with a limited one-year manufacturer’s warranty. Amazon customers rated it 4.5 out of 5 stars. However, there were some dissatisfied customers. One  user stated that the bushings began to fall apart after using the board only a few times.

Yocaher Professional Speed Drop Down Stained Complete Longboard

3.8 out o f 5 stars

The Yocaher brand is pretty affordable, and it’s ideal for professional longboard riders. It has 9-ply maple and a 33-inch wheelbase. The drop-down deck provides passengers with a lower center of gravity, which increases the maneuverability. Since it has no flex, the drop down can perform at high speeds, and it’s great for downhill riding. The trucks on this board are top-mounted and have cutouts around the nose and tail to reduce the risk of wheel bite.

You can purchase this longboard for approximately $65 to $80 on  Amazon , and the customers on the site have given it 3.8 out of 5 stars. Unfortunately, one  reviewer said his board broke after just three months of use.

Here’s What We Think

Each board highlighted in this article is awesome in its own way, so choosing the best one was difficult. Plus, all of these brands have great ratings, which made our decision much harder. With that said, we couldn’t pick one specific model, but we do think that the Landyachtz longboards have the best quality. After researching the company and looking over all of their boards, we couldn’t ignore how high-quality their products are. And it also helps that people who absolutely love boarding comprise the company itself.

On the other hand, we do feel that their boards might be too pricey for some people. If that’s the case, other brands make great boards with a more affordable price tag. We believe that a less expensive product doesn’t necessarily mean it is low quality. Our decision was tough, but we know everyone has specific things they look for in their longboards. An Overview on Landyacthz Tugboat

The Tugboat by Landyachtz is lightweight and generally small that you can easily bring almost anywhere you want. It’s very portable that you can even fit it inside a backpack or even store it in a locker. It has a size like a typical skateboard, however, riding it makes all the difference.

Riding in a Landyachtz Tugboat will feel like you’re riding on a longboard. This is probably because of the wheels and trucks. Comparing its size to Landyachtz Dinghy, which has the closest similarity to a tugboat, it is larger which makes it more stable and comfortable to ride on.

The deck is made of 100% Canadian Maple wood which makes it a very sturdy board. Having said this, bigger and heavier skaters would be comfortable riding on this because of the stability and bigger room for those with larger feet. Aside from that, it can withstand the load of heavier riders even if they perform jump tricks.

Riding on the Landyachtz Tugboat is smooth and fast. It is also easy to carve and perform quick turns. When it comes to debris or dirt, it can easily overcome roll over rocks and other debris without the need to stop or decrease in speed. Even on wet ground, it can still roll smoothly without slipping.

The Tugboat is not just for long rides around campus, it is also a nice board when doing flips and kicks and several bowl shredding due to its small nose and generous kicktail. This mini-cruiser may be designed for urban commuting but it can also perform street tricks and downhill rides.

The Landyachtz Tugboat has several cool designs for you to choose from. They are not overly striking yet are still eye-catching.

Features of the Landyachtz Tugboat

Made of 7-ply 100% Canadian Maple wood, with a length of 30 inches and a width of 9.25 inches. A little longer than the Landyachtz Dinghy which makes it a great cruiser board. The wood is sturdy enough to handle jump tricks from a 200-pound skater.

The shape of the deck is almost the same as the popsicle street deck. However, do not expect full wheel cutouts. It has the right level of stiffness to perform some tricks and freestyle. For better foot lock-in while going downhill, the concave of the tugboat is medium radial but still offers enough room to let your feet move without constraint when doing freestyle and cruising.

It has a 7″ kicktail and a 4″ upturned nose letting riders do some kick tricks, nose rides, and great manuals. It has a rough grip tape on the deck to keep skaters’ feet in place when park riding.

Fatty Hawgs Wheels

The Tugboat wheels have a size of 63mm and a durometer of 78A. Fatty Hawgs Wheels is owned by Landyachtz so you can expect the same quality.

The Fatty Hawgs wheels that come with the Tugboat are softer which makes them great on smooth terrain. However, these wheels may not be the best ones to use on uneven roads as the board may feel a bit rough and bumpy.

Some may want to switch for bigger wheels, however, this can make it harder to ride on long distances because of the increased board height. When it comes to wheelbite, changing to bigger wheels should not be an issue.

Polar Bear Trucks

The trucks on Landyachtz Tugboat is 155mm TKP Polar Bear Trucks. Compared to other cruisers like the Dinghy that use 105mm, they provide more stability and a smoother ride.

The Polar Bear trucks give a surfy feel when riding and they provide quick turnings. These trucks reactive and make the board easier to maneuver.

Since it is a top-mount deck – meaning the trucks are attached underneath the deck – it makes the board a bit higher on the ground. This and the Tugboat’s short wheelbase may not be a great broad for a beginner.

When it comes to bushings, average riders will not have a problem with it. However, a heavier and bigger skateboarder may want to replace it with a higher durometer.

Bear Spaceball Bearings

The 8mm Bear Spaceball bearings are relatively quiet. They are also better quality bearings than most stock bearings from other brands.

Amazing UV Graphic Effects

Same with Landyachtz other lines of cruisers, Tugboat shares the same nice-looking and cool graphics. It even comes with UV graphics. When the board is exposed to light it will change color and your board will be like a new and different one.

Landyachtz Tugboat vs. Landyachtz Dinghy

The Landyachtz Tugboat and Dinghy are almost very similar cruisers. They have almost the same features except for a few differences like the size. Tugboat is longer and wider with a length of 30″ and a width of 9.25″ compared to the Dinghy that is 28″ long and 8″ wide.

Compared to Landyachtz Dinghy, the board feels better when riding as it is more stable and comfortable without worrying about losing its capacity to maneuver. Thanks to the additional 2 inches, it provides more precision than the Dinghy.

Since the Tugboat’s trucks are wider, this provides more stability when riding at higher speeds making it more suitable for downhill rides. The Dinghy, having narrower trucks, may not provide you with the same stability and speed. It is not also the best board to use when riding downhill.

When it comes to price, Dinghy is more affordable than Tugboat. But since the latter provides more stability that is very useful on downhills and cruising around the town, the extra dollars are worth it.

The Tugboat having a longer size gives skaters the feel of longboarding. It is not your ordinary cruiser unlike Dinghy and other cruiser boards from the Landyachtz collection. The wider width and longer length give it more stability which is what most skaters look for when doing downhill rides and flip tricks.

The wheels are also better as they can overcome almost any kind of debris on the grounds. Plus it can handle wet terrais without any issues or having to stop or slow down. The Hawgs Wheels also offer a nice grip and lots of roll speed.

To minimize wheel bites, the wheel wells were sanded which is great since the Tugboat does not have full cutouts. For more comfortable footwork, the Tugboat has a low concave that is also great for better foot lock-in.

Although a newbie rider may find it hard to cruise around the first few tries, they can tweak the board a bit to make learning easier and more comfortable. Another downside is the price that may not appeal to most beginners as there are cheaper boards that have the same qualities and are more beginner-friendly.

To proclaim the Dinghy as the perfect city board, the manufacturer designed it with a small and lightweight frame to enhance its maneuverability. Despite the small size, the board is equipped with longboard wheels to bring about versatility over different riding surfaces.

The Landyachtz Dinghy is available in three different sizes to suit smaller riders. These include:

Landyachtz Mini Dinghy 24:  24-inch length, 6.5-inch width, 14-inch wheelbase

Landyachtz Mini Dinghy 26 : 26-inch length, 6.5-inch width, 14-inch wheelbase

Landyachtz Dinghy 28:  28.5-inch length, 8-inch width, 14.6-inch wheelbase

Apart from the deck size, all the Dinghy boards use practically the same kind of components. Another aspect you’d like to note is that there have been more than 20 editions of the Dinghy over the years. The ones I’ve listed above are just the main sizes you’ll find the boards in.

While the major difference between the boards lies in the graphic design art, some have a small variation in size. For instance, the Dinghy Handstand is slightly bigger than the rest with dimensions of 29 x 8.5 x 14.4 inches for the length, width, and wheelbase respectively.

Some people find themselves struggling to choose the ideal board with so many options on the table. Overall, you’d be wise to go with the bigger version with a graphic design of your preference if you are of standard height. The smaller sized boards are better suited for a kid or smaller rider. 

 After all, all the Dinghies come with similar components. All the wheels, trucks, and bearings are produced by Landyachtz and deliver the same type of quality performance. Let us review the individual parts and see what their impact on the ride is:

One of the most praised features on the Dinghy has to be the deck! It is made out of strong and durable 7-ply maple wood to make for a stable performance on the trail. When it comes to size, the Dinghy comes in sizes of 24-28.5” x 6.5-8.5” x 14-15” as earlier mentioned in this Landyachtz Dingy review. The unit is generally short and the wheelbase is small.

The maple board on the Dinghy is pretty sturdy and has no flex, which is something you’ll need to get used to if you’ve been cruising on a flexible board. The maple is much stiffer than a bamboo deck. 

You might assume that a flexible board would be a more suitable choice but that’s not the case for the Dinghy board. Testing the board tells you it was built for fun. The sturdy deck even allows you to do ollies, flip tricks, and maintain your stability on rough riding surfaces.

While other materials tend to be a little lighter, they are also limiting to the rider. 

 Grip Tape

A notable feature that you don’t find on all boards in the market is the clear grip tape. This helps to keep you stable when you stand on the board, ensuring that you remain on your twos when the ride gets wobbly. 

Landyachtz used high-quality tape on the Dinghy, and this can last for years. While the tape offers enough grip to keep your feet planted on the board, it still lets you move your feet around comfortably when handling the ride. 

But not all versions come with clear tape on the deck, and the Dinghy Summit is just one of the exceptions. 

The board is also designed with wheel wells that help to prevent wheel bite. These prove to come in handy for riders who prefer loose tracks and deep carves. You won’t have to worry about the wheels touching your skateboard. 

 Shape

The Dinghy’s deck is built in a mellow radial concave shape. The side of the board is slightly elevated to make the Dinghy more responsive, which makes it a decent choice for pulling off tricks. 

But you should note that the concave design is not for everyone. This is because it tends to eat into the stability you get on an entirely flat deck like a penny board, although it’s a nice design for playful riders. 

Furthermore, the shape enables you to perform sliding movements much more easily, and you’ll appreciate that the concave design is perfectly balanced on the Landyachtz Dinghy.

The board also features a directional deck, which means both the nose and tail are elevated. The nose is a little pointier than the tail while the shape of the tail lets you ollie or hop over curbs and patches of grass. It helps you to maintain your balance as you lean back. 

The kicktail ensures that you can hop curbs with relative ease as you cruise while the soft wheels make for a pleasant landing. They don’t bounce a lot like on some boards. Another benefit of the kick tail is that it allows you to perform kick turns if you are up to it. 

Given the stiffness of the deck and the shorter wheelbase, you might experience some wobbliness when cruising around at top speeds. 

 Trucks

The Dinghy is equipped with 105mm traditional Polar Bear trucks, featuring enlarged bushing seats for enhanced turnability. This is relatively narrow for a truck, which may not be as stable as a larger truck. However, it is expected given the small size of the board.

One attribute of Polar Bear trucks is their high tolerance level to minimize slop. Meanwhile, the hangers have been machine faced to boost strength, and axels heat-treated and reinforced to make sure they keep spinning straight. 

The baseplates of the trucks come with 8 holes to let you customize your Dinghy by leveraging the new school or old school hole pattern. The 0.25-inch risers on the Bear trucks also help to reduce the likelihood of wheel bite. 

Some riders claim the bushings are a little bit squeaky when you start to use the board, but that’s pretty common with new bushings. The noise tends to stop when you finally break into them. Anyway, you can upgrade to higher quality bushings if required.

 Bushings

A closer review of the bushings on the Dinghy reveals that the top bushing is cone-shaped whereas the bottom one is barrel-shaped. The variation in shape offers different qualities while riding. The combination of the two adds stability, as well as maneuverability to the ride.

For perspective, bushings are typically shaped differently to suit a certain style of riding or improve the ride in some kind of way. For instance, cone-shaped bushings enable the rider to make quick turns and other agile maneuvers whereas barrel-shaped bushings help you to maintain stability, particularly during long turns. 

As you start to ride your newly acquired Dinghy, you might want to consider changing the bushings, depending on the weight of the rider . 

 Wheels

The Landyachtz Dinghy comes with 63mm Hawgs Fatty wheels- a brand that Landyachtz owns. The Hawgs wheels make use of proprietary urethane and are tested rigorously on downhill slopes under freeriding conditions. 

This makes for a superior quality of wheels that most Dinghy owners swear by. These are also the same kind of wheels that Landyachtz uses on higher-end freeride models of longboards it manufactures. 

 Small but Smooth

I my opinion, the 63mm soft wheels are slightly small when you consider the size of the Dinghy and the fast turning Bear trucks it comes with. However, they deliver great roll speed that I didn’t expect at their size. 

Their 78A durometer feels kind of squishy but remains firm when you are riding. Overall, the Fatty wheels strike a sweet spot between rolling smoothly on various types of terrains and breaking into slides easily. 

The wheels are smooth and you barely feel the bumps even when cruising at high speeds. These remain steady when running over all kinds of surfaces. Whether you’re cruising on a sidewalk with cracks or metal chunks; they just won’t get chipped. 

 Grippy yet Slidy

The small size of the wheels mixed with the proportionally wide 50mm contact patch makes them controllable for slides and they still manage to offer just enough grip. Their rounded lips also help to significantly support kicking into slides. 

The other feature to note about the Hawgs wheels is the offset positioning found on the wheel cores. The core is placed between the inner and center of the wheel instead of the side-set or center-set cores. 

The offset positioning leads to a balanced combination of grip and slide. The wide and supportive cores on the Fatty wheels makes the longboard ideal for sliding and performing tricks on the Dinghy when carving through streets. 

 Bearings

The Dinghy uses Bear Spaceball bearings. These are not your typical generic, low-quality components. The bearings are pretty decent and help to enhance the performance of the board. They have built-in spacers that help the wheels to stay aligned and wiggle free. 

This allows you to change the wheels much more easily and tighten the axles to your preference without interfering with the setup. The result is that the Bear Spaceball bearings enable your wheels to roll for hours on end without getting loose and can cope with popping tricks.

While the consensus among Dinghy owners is that the bearings are quite good, you can still decide to upgrade to better ones if you’re looking for something with more speed. 

How Does the Landyachtz Dinghy Perform?

The Dinghy performs impressively on all kinds of surfaces. It boasts a versatile design that allows it to hold its own in the city streets, as well as the on rougher off-road trails. Let us look at what the board is good for?

 Is the Landyachtz good for Cruising?

The Landyachtz Dinghy is a great choice if you’re looking for a cruiser! In fact, it was designed specifically for cruising through city streets and sidewalks in urban areas. The small size and overall design of the wheels allow the board to accelerate pretty fast yet still manage to roll smoothly.

The short length of the board allows for enhanced maneuverability and agile turnability, enabling you to swerve in and out of crowds with relative ease. Don’t worry about the occasional potholes and curbs you’ll come across on the road; the kick tail design of the Dinghy makes it easy for you to hop over obstacles . With this board, you can look forward to a full urban commuter experience in whichever city you find yourself in.  This is just what the manufacturer envisioned when designing the Landyachtz Dinghy!

 Is the Landyachtz good for Freeriding?

The Dinghy wasn’t exactly designed for freeriding. Nevertheless, you can still pull it off and enjoy yourself while at it. Generally, freeriding boards are notably longer than the Landyachtz Dinghy. So, if you’re buying the longboard primarily for freeriding , I recommend you look elsewhere for a more suitable option.

But if you just want to experiment with the Dinghy, you may manage to pull off some nice slides. With the concave design of the top, sliding becomes easy as you can lock your feet. Furthermore, the Fatty Hawgs wheels won’t prevent you from sliding. 

 Is the Landyachtz Dinghy good for Pumping?

The Dinghy can be used for pumping. However, it does necessitate experience and you’ll only be able to perform the maneuver if you know what you’re doing. While the Polar Bear trucks may not be the ideal choice for pumping, you can still pull it off with the right experience. 

 Can it Perform Tricks?

The Landyachtz Dinghy allows you to performs tricks such as ollies, manuals, kickflips, as well as a bunch of other old school moves. Despite being capable of pulling off more technical tricks that a skateboard would, I wouldn’t recommend the Dinghy as a go-to option. 

This is because the board wasn’t designed for tricks’; you’ll be better off going for a regular skateboard. Only experienced skateboarders can perform tricks with the Dinghy, so don’t take your board to the skatepark if you don’t have the skills. 

Admittedly, the Dinghy can easily handle very tight turns and carves, which comes in handy for pools/bowls, but the Hags Fatty wheels are very soft. You may be able to do slides, manuals, and plenty of other tricks but they won’t be as perfect as they should be. 

Unlike regular skateboards, the stock wheels on the Dinghy are big and soft, which allows for smoother rolling but landing the trick might prove to be slightly unstable. Riding a bowl is possible but you’d still be better off with an alternative setup meant for that purpose. 

 Is the Landyachtz Dinghy good for Riding on Rough Roads?

The Dinghy rides perfectly on rough roads. It is fitted with large Hawgs wheels that have an easy time rolling over stones, twigs, small rocks, and other debris on the road. Although it was designed for cruising around the city streets, you can still have a fun time with it on the off-road tracks. 

However, you still need to get acclimated to the board before you take it on the rough terrains, unless you want to be left with egg on your face. 

 Downhill Riding?

When you review the setup of the Landyachtz Dinghy, it is easy to conclude that the board isn’t suitable for downhill riding. The package is relatively small and its narrow trucks will get unstable when you achieve the high speeds associated with downhill riding. 

The wheelbase is also small and does not favor you downhill. A smaller wheelbase reduces your stability, which is not something you want on a downhill slope. Furthermore, you can’t reach the type of speeds you can achieve while riding a downhill longboard. 

After all, city riding typically doesn’t involve a lot of hills, so the design of the Dinghy doesn’t embrace downhill riding. 

 On the flip side, the stiff maple construction of the board, as well as the Hawgs Fatty wheel, can allow you to catch some speed downhill as you maintain your balance. Additionally, the mellow radial concave shape ensures that your feet will be planted securely when moving at a fast speed. 

Still, it comes with a level of risk you wouldn’t want to take . There are much better boards available for downhill riding. The Landyachtz Dinghy is more suited for cruising. 

 The Dinghy is the Perfect Commuter Board

The Landyachtz Dinghy features a compact build that you can easily carry around whenever you’re not riding it. It will comfortably fit under your arm or you can strap it on your backpack for easy portability. 

The 24” version of the board is small enough to fit inside the bigger backpacks in the market, allowing you to go with it practically anywhere your schedule takes you. This means you’ll have no problem hopping onto public transport when you grow tired of skateboarding. 

 Is the Dinghy Too Small for You?

Looking at the Dinghy, it is easy to see that it’s a lot smaller than the majority of boards in the market. You may be wondering whether it will accommodate you if you decide to invest in one. 

Well, it all comes down to two aspects: rider size (shoe size and height) and the kind of riding you plan on using the board for.

If your shoe size is above average, there is a possibility you’ll have a hard time getting comfortable on the board. The deck is only 8” wide, so you’ll want to try standing on the board first to see if it can accommodate your foot size. 

This also means that on tight turns, you will experience a level of instability since your heels or toes will be sticking out. 

 Considering the short length of the Dinghy, taller riders will have a hard time finding a good stance. But if you are under 6’4”, it shouldn’t be a challenge for you. Overall, it’s a matter of preference. 

There are tall riders who shine on small boards and shorter riders who ride on large boards; find what works for you! 

When it comes to the type of riding, the Landyachtz Dinghy was meant for cruising. The small design comes in handy when you have to weave in and out of crowds in the streets and the kicktail allows you to hop over obstacles on the ground. 

So, don’t buy the longboard to go free or downhill riding!

If you have bigger than average-size feet, you might have a hard time riding on the smaller deck of the Dinghy. Tall people may also struggle to find a comfortable stance on the board. 

The maple wood used on the deck is not adequately water-resistant and tends to soak in water over time, resulting in a heavy skateboard.

The Landyactz Dinghy is not suitable for beginners who have no experience in skateboarding. It is best fit for intermediate of pro riders.

9 Longboards for Heavy Riders That Can Take a Beating

When it comes to mobility and style combined, longboards are the perfect alternative for a rider. Many people think that overweight or heavy riders can’t ride but that’s just nonsense.

While the choice of the best longboard for heavy riders is somewhat limited, there are a couple factors you need to consider before you buy a new board.

A longboard is similar to a skateboard, only longer and more sluggish and not really meant for tricks. Typically, the weight limit of the best longboards for bigger and taller riders is up to 300 pounds.

I’ll will share a list of longboards and cruisers that are great for heavy riders and there’s a buying guide for taller and bigger longboarders.

Here are the top 8 of the best longboards for heavy and taller riders. These are recommended by the Reddit longboarding community, and I’ll mention a couple of cruisers tested by me.

It’s a mix of longboard and cruisers. Cruisers are more agile and great for short commutes, the longboards listed here are great for long-distance riding.

Let’s start with something aggressive and nimble. The Landyachtz Tugboat Captain sits between a skateboard and a longboard.

It’s super strong and can handle heavy weights well. If you’re looking for a fun and playful ride, this is a board to consider.

The super wide deck consists of a large kicktail and asmaller curbed nose, it also has quite a steep concave.

It will take some time to get used to it’s aggressive geometry but since there is lots of room for your feet, it won’t take that long.

The grip tape is very sticky which helps when you want to do some aggressive turns and keeps you on your board if you ride through rougher surfaces.

The huge kicktail has a very steep angle, more than any cruiser I currently but it’s great for digging in when you encounter pebbles and cracks.

Because of its steep concave and shape, you can actually do a couple of tricks but I would be careful. Hopping a few curbs is fine though.

The trucks and bushings are sturdy enough for sharp turns, but at some point the board will make it know you can’s push it any further. Don’t worry, you will notice this on time.

I’m not a fan of Fatty Hawgs wheels but they seem to perform really well on this setup. They’re only 60mm but it seems like the right size for this board.

The Spaceball bearings come with integrated spacers and aren’t that great, might want to swap them for Zealous bearings if you can.

Let’s move on to longboards.

I have not tested this board but when doing some research, the Bustin Elements is often recommended for heavy riders on several forums.

Bustin Boards made the new Sportster’ Elements’ for the low-platform commuters.

It has the signature ‘Response Drop’ design, which is extremely efficient for speed weaving in crowded urban areas. 

This longboard is the best for heavy riders because of its (E) Core inside. The deck is made of Canadian Maple wood with epoxy-based glues.

At the top, it has a Reinforced Maple top sheet, followed by seven composite reinforcement layers. At the bottom, fiberglass serves as the Truck mount reinforcement.

The length of the board is 35.5 inches, and the width is ten inches for the longboard. The width makes it suitable for riders with bigger shoe sizes.

Moreover, the wheelbase is a little above 29 inches. This is a compact ride with a reinforced fork nose. 

Longboard riders have varying skill levels. Some people could be newcomers, and others might be the maestros.

If you are a bigger, taller, and heavier rider and want to use the longboard for a durable time, you should choose Sector 9 Meridian, which suits all skill levels.

The drop-through mount design of the Meridian keeps it comfortable for the rider to push and have fun.

Its design keeps it low to the ground and offers balance at speeds with the eight-ply maple deck.

Trucks on this mean machine are incredible; 10.0 inches Gullwing charger trucks. Moreover, the shape is old-school Taco style, which helps you dig your feet when turning.

Bearings, however, have ABEC 5 ratings, but they give you a warranty of 25 years.

This longboard has a length of forty inches and a width of almost ten inches. The wheelbase of the Meridian is a little above thirty inches.

To conclude, it is the best longboard for heavy riders with a weight of up to 230 pounds.

Whether it is a cruise down the Boardwalk or a skate down the winding mountain road, Arbor DropCruiser Flagship will get you where you wish to go.

With an excellent standing platform, the DropCruiser flagship gives you balance and harmony with a Palisander wood top and bottom-finish ply.

This premium longboard is the most suitable for the overweight and taller rider because of its nine-ply Canadian hard rock maple.

It has soft and grippy wheels, which are the best for carving and cruising. This aesthetic ride is best suited for heavy riders with its 180 mm trucks.

For all of you who dream of riding on flat terrain or a swift downhill ride, Omen Barbarian is the best longboard for you. This longboard is highly competitive at a fair price. 

Price of Carbon Fiberboard (only): $139.99, you have to pick the other parts yourself!

The symmetrical decks ensure balance and stability for taller riders. The board is made of Carbon Fiber. 

It has a nine-ply maple deck, which is ideal for heavier riders. Moreover, Paris 50 reverse kingpin trucks are an added incentive for the taller riders.

I have not tested this board myself, but I know Landyachtz makes solid board.

Landyachtz is a premium longboard company, and I’ve have included their Switchblade 40 chief night because heavy riders recommend it.

The switchblade is the ideal longboard for freeriding, which comes in a double drop freeride shape.

This forty-by-twenty longboard ensures thrust, safety, durability, and top speed for taller and bigger riders.

Switchblade’s board set is a complete package. It has 180 mm Gen-6 grizzly trucks, making it the perfect longboard for the big guys.

The symmetrical deck is made with 100% Canadian maple and manufactured in Canada. 

The foot platform has space for dropping your foot while curving and turning, which serves as an added benefit for stability.

The perfectly paired components are freeriding bliss for heavy riders. Switchblade also has a 38 inches version, but 40 Chief Night is a perfect choice for taller and bigger riders.

The Glove big blazer is more of a cruiser and just 32″ long. It’s a great longboard/cruiser for beginners and heavier riders.

It can handle quite some abuse and is quite predictable. It takes some time to get up to speed but it’s surprisingly fast.

Experienced rider might find this board a bit boring but it’s perfect for heavier riders that are new to longboarding. Very stable and responsive, but not for cruising hours on end.

The deck is 32 inches tall and 9″ wide near the front. The length is between a small cruiser and a longboard (32″) and 9″at its widest point, great for heavier riders and beginners.

The lack of concave is what makes this board a bit dull. The deck’s surface is super flat and it has a small kicktail.

Still you can hop curbs and ride through rough surfaces with easy, just make sure to lean back when you encounter gravel.

This board is big and heavy, has a huge kicktail and is super wide. Same goes for the Paris Street trucks, super wide and very stable.

I love wheels, buttery smooth and the amber color really ads a nice touch.

The Oso has that Oldschool vibe and I wouldn’t be surprised if you can ride this one in pools. It’s heavy like I mentioned, but you won’t notice when riding. It only helps you to remain stable.

The very mellow concave makes this board more beginner friendly, way less concave compared to the LY tugboat.

This also means there is more room for your feet. The huge kicktail helps you to get into an aggressive stance when you enounter rocks, twiggs, or cracks and it ploughs through gravel with ease.

I needed some time to find the proper stance and learned that I like to place my feet near the front bolts and my back foot close to the tail.

In a more aggressive stance, I like to place my back foot on the tail, often when I encounter gravel, cracks, or a patch of grass.

What makes this board extra suitable for heavy riders are the hard bushings. This is the only thing that annoyed me and I had to replace them for softer bushings.

Heavy riders will appreciated them though, I got a few extra pounds myself but the hardness was too much for my weight.

This board is not for long-distance riding. It’s more of a commuter but perfect for heavier riders.

The Bustin Maestro is one of the most recommended longboards for beginners and heavier riders.

It’s not as cheap as those crappy Amazon boards but insteads you get high quality parts than can deal with heavier longboarders.

The Maestro is a pusher which means it’s less suitable for very long distances or free rising like the Bustin Sportster.

The Maestro is one of the best push boards you can buy, especially at its price point. The Maestro is great for those who want a bit of free style and are looking for a comfortable ride.

Longboards for Big Guys Buying Guide

If you are above 5′ 10″ and/or above 200 pounds, you could be considered are a heavy rider. Typically, longboards are manufactured with an 8-ply deck, which holds 250 lbs. on average.

The weight capacity depends a lot on how you keep yourself while riding. If you keep on pressing the longboard on the wrong spaces, it will reduce the durability.

Therefore, it is also dependent on the way you land, along with your weight. The parts play a significant role when picking the a longboard if you’re a bit heavier.

Let’s have alook at all the crucial components of a longboard so that you can get a better understanding of what you need.

This understanding will help you pick the “right complete” with the “right parts.” There is a thin line between a typical longboard and the one that is best for heavy riders.

Wood is a natural deck material for longboards. If you are buying a longboard with a maple deck, make sure it has a minimum of eight layers.

It is even better if you can get your hands on a maple wood deck with nine layers. Moreover, the deck width should be at least 9.75 inches to cater to the big guys.

For a heavier and taller rider, longboards’ maple wood deck needs to have board strength. If a maple wood deck is too flexible for your liking, please enquire about the layers.

As previously mentioned, 8-9 layers add sufficient board strength to uphold a bigger rider.

The most significant factor for buying the best longboard for bulky riders is the material used in its deck.

If it has bamboo layers, it adds natural flexibility to the longboard. This type of flexibility is not harmful to a taller rider.

Furthermore, if you want to choose the best combination for your longboard, you can select the combo of bamboo layers and fiberglass.

This arrangement is subtle and durable. It lends a massive amount of stiffness and strength to the longboard.

Hence, it would be best to do thorough research in deck material when looking for the best longboard for overweight riders.

Many longboards have flexible decks which is less suitable for heavy riders. Sure a bit of flex is okay, but stay away from really flexy boards!

Upward curved decks

If you are tall, heavy, and bigger, you should always look for the best longboard with an upward curved deck. This shape will add more longevity, and it is by far the least flexible deck shape.

Short Wheelbase

Typically, the durability of a longboard relies heavily on your skill level. If you know your weight, height, or size is massive, you should learn how to place your feet in the right spot.

Short wheelbase ensures safety and strength. The best longboards for heavy riders should have a wheelbase of shorter length.

Moreover, it gives you the allowance of placing your feet near the trucks. The wheelbase length should not be too short that a heavy rider cannot maneuver easily.

Long Wheelbase

When you are an overweight longboarder (or just a tall guy with heavy bones), I recommend focusing on tiny things that could be hazardous.

If the wheelbase is long, it could break the deck when you place a step wrong. Keep in mind, longboarding is a challenging sport, and you can expect sudden maneuvers along the way.

Therefore, I recommend that you don’t pick a longboard with a longer wheelbase if you are a heavyweight.

These decks are neutral for a heavy rider. Flat decks work better than a Cambered deck because the flexibility is less.

When looked at from the side, Neutral flat decks would look relatively flat than an upward curved deck or Downward Curved deck.

Flat decks are one of the best longboards for heavy riders, after upward curved decks.

Cambered Decks

The cambered deck is another name for the downward curved board. Typically, these boards flex more.

Flexibility, to an extent, is excellent for longboarding. Still, when it comes to heavy riders, flexibility can cause damage to the deck.

A bigger and heavier rider should not buy a longboard with a cambered deck. It is not “bulk-friendly.”

Concave Shape

Concave shaped decks add rigidity and subtleness to the longboard. If the concave is deeper, it lends more strength to the deck.

For that reason, a heavy rider should only choose a longboard with a strong deck. Flexibility is a noticeable feature, but not for taller and bigger riders.

Furthermore, W-concave is another style of this shape available in more expensive longboards.

Longboards for a heavy rider must have solid trucks. Trucks must not be made from plastic, as those can’t bear the weight of a taller and bigger rider.

Nylon, too, is a no-go for trucks. Your trucks should be made of Aluminum and steel, which will ensure a solid base for heavy riders.

Moreover, the best longboard will have kingpins, axles, nuts, and baseplates. All parts are vital for the solid construction of the longboard.

You should take into account the mounting style of these trucks as well. As a heavier and taller rider, if you want to ride freestyle, the drop-through trucks should be the mounting style.

However, if you ride a lot of downhill, trucks should be top-mounted. As far as the Kingpins go, you can select the hollow-shaped kingpins.

Heavier longboarders might benefit from harder bushings. Check out the table below and see what would work for you.

I included tables for longboards in general, freeride bushings, and downhill. You might want to skip downhill though, not recommended if you are a bit on the heavy side.

First thing’s first, because you are a taller and bigger longboard rider, you should not go for a cheap bearings option. Ignore the ABEC rating, check the build quality.

I personally recommend Zealous Bearings for cruising and longboarding. They are super durable and once you get up to speed, they just keep going.

Skateboard bearings like Bones are better for fast acceleration.

On a regular skateboard you just want to get up to speed fast and perform a trick. On a longboard you want to keep going without having to push too much.

Don’t go for Bones Ceramic bearings (over-priced) as well as lower grade metals. Steel bearings should be your way-to-go. The stronger the bearings are, the more durable the longboard will be.

Wheels are very important but not when so much when it comes to weight. Just get big fat soft wheels around 70-75mm/78A and you’re good to go.

With the modern advancement of Polyurethane, wheels can now withstand a heavier rider.

When a taller and/or bigger rider cruises on a longboard, it can be subject to an excess of sudden moves.

The days of cored wheels are gone, and manufacturers have found a solution to its weakness. 

For heavier riders, longboards should have sustainable trucks because this is where the load is being shifted while riding.

If your longboard trucks are made of nylon or plastic, it is a no go area for you being a heavy rider. Since you do not want your boards to crack, we recommend Aluminum or Steel trucks and bearing. 

Your decks should have eight plies or more, and your trucks should be solid. You can choose bamboo layered decks, or also a hybrid with fiberglass.

If you are riding at higher speeds, you will need a little flexibility in your deck, but since you are a heavy dude, the natural flexibility of bamboo layers should be the maximum you can opt for.

Besides, there is a risk of “wheel bite” for heavy riders. Your deck height should be tried and tested before buying a longboard.

If you are a taller rider, like more than 6′ 2″, why should you not have all the fun?

Furthermore, if you have complete confidence in your longboard riding skills, you can choose a smaller board for urban uses.

Because riding in city areas or going to your class will be crowded, it might be challenging to ride a 44 inches board.

Still, it depends on your preference and riding style. We recommend not choosing a longboard below 36 inches deck length even for urban rides to match your tall height.

Here is a longboard size chart for your quick understanding:

Bigger riders have different problems. For instance, they could have overhanging feet for riders with bigger shoe sizes. Now, what to do when your shoe-size does not fit the standing platform?

If you’re heavy and have a very flexible board, riding might be a bit more difficult. Consider a stiffer board to help you maintain balance.

For those who have large feet and bigger shoe sizes, curved decks might be uncomfortable for you. However, it all depends on a person’s preference.

Our recommendation is to seriously think about this before buying a longboard for bigger riders, it will make the choice a lot easier.

Typically, decks are 42 inches long and 10 inches wide. If your shoe size does not fit, you can choose to buy a longboard 44 inches in length.

Longboards are for everyone no matter what your body type is. Consider the most essential things when buying a longboard and avoid cheap boards on Amazon.

Those are not going to ofer comfortable ride, not will they support your weight.

• The deck should be at least 8-ply.
• Wheel sizes preferably between 70mm and 75mm.
• Wheelbase length should be as per your preference.
• Deck width should be 8.75″ to 10″ for more balance.
• Deck material could be maple or bamboo layered.
• Deck material with an amalgamated layer of fiberglass is preferred.
• Board shape can vary, but “concave shape” is the best.

Only 202 perfect women's brackets remain after Duke win

After a day when all the higher seeds emerged victorious, just 202 perfect women's brackets remain two games into the second round.

No. 7 Duke handed No. 2 Ohio State a 75-63 loss and No. 1 South Carolina took care of business against No. 8 North Carolina, leaving few of the more than four million entries we started with perfect:

Among Women's Bracket Challenge Game entries, 77.65 percent had Ohio State moving onto the Sweet 16. Only 14.97 percent had Duke advancing to the second weekend.

More than 1,300 perfect women's brackets remain after first round

We move onto the second round.

Through 32 games, there are  more than 1,300 perfect women's brackets  across major online games: Women's Bracket Challenge Game, ESPN, CBS, Yahoo and USA Today. Here's the breakdown:

• ESPN: 1,186
• CBS: 50+ (public leaderboard shows top 50)
• USA Today: 5

We started the tournament with more than four million entries. The second day began with approximately 20,000 perfect brackets remaining. 

Last year, the first round of the women's tournament ended with just seven — yes, seven  — perfect brackets.

Around 2,000 women's brackets remain after Ole Miss, West Virginia win

The always tough to pick No. 7 vs. No. 10 and No. 8 vs. No. 9 games did some damage to the remaining perfect women's brackets.

No. 7 Ole Miss beat No. 10 Marquette, 67-55, and No. 8 West Virginia defeated No. 9 Princeton, 63-53. We started the tournament with more than four million entries across major online games — approximately 2,000 remain with four first round games left.

The two games were some of the most split first round games among Women's Bracket Challenge Game entries. The Rebels and Golden Eagles had a near 50-50 split among all WBCG brackets — though 75 percent of remaining perfect WBCG entries picked Ole Miss to advance — while 54 percent of WBCG entries selected the Mountaineers to move onto the second round.

Fewer than 10,000 perfect women's brackets after Kansas' OT win

Six games into the second day of the women's tournament, there's estimated to be less than 10,000 perfect brackets remaining across major online games.

While every higher seed has taken care of business so far today, the always tough 8-9 matchup between No. 8 Kansas and No. 9 Michigan took out a sizable number of the remaining perfect brackets.

Just under 36 percent of Women's Bracket Challenge Game brackets had the Jayhawks advancing, but they moved on with an 81-72 overtime victory.

Tennessee's win drops perfect women's brackets to 0.21 percent

Tennessee didn't struggle against one of the most popular upset picks in this year's Women's Bracket Challenge Game, as the No. 6 Lady Vols crushed No. 11 Green Bay, 92-61, to begin Saturday's 16-game schedule.

Almost 29 percent of brackets picked Green Bay — the No. 2 most-popular upset on WBCG brackets. Only No. 11 Middle Tennessee (30.24 percent) was higher — and the Blue Raiders did take down No. 6 Louisville on Friday.

But with Tennessee's win, the number of perfect women's brackets fell to only 0.21 percent in WBGC. Stay right here for coverage all day long.

All men's brackets bust, most women's brackets fall on Friday

Friday's NCAA tournament action came with plenty of excitement and even more busted brackets — including all men's brackets.

After starting the day with approximately 2,100 perfect men's brackets — out of more than 31 million entries across major bracket games when tracking began on Thursday — zero were left standing 31 games into the tournament. No. 8 Utah State busted the final perfect bracket with its victory over No. 9 TCU. 

Over on the women's side, the first day of the first round saw the higher seed win all but one game, but most of the perfect brackets fell anyway. We started the day with more than four million entries in major online games, but it is estimated that fewer than 20,000 perfect brackets remain. 

The first game — No. 8 North Carolina's victory over No. 9 Michigan State — cut the field in half. In the third game, No. 11 Middle Tennessee brought the percent of perfect brackets below four percent. By the end of the day, the number of perfect entries was below one percent.

No. 8 Utah State busts the last perfect men's bracket

The final perfect men's bracket has fallen.

No. 8 Utah State defeated No. 9 TCU 88-72 to eliminate the last perfect bracket among major online games : Men's Bracket Challenge Game, ESPN, CBS and Yahoo.

The men's tournament started with more than 31 million entries. Going into Friday, we were left with more than 2,100 perfect brackets. But on game No. 31 of the tournament, the Aggies defeated the Horned Frogs and also took down the last perfect bracket. Here's how we lost brackets and dropped to zero in the final stretch of games:

• No. 13 Yale def. No. 4 Auburn  — 23 perfect
• No. 9 Texas A&M def. No. 8 Nebraska  — 13 perfect
• No. 4 Duke def. No. 13 Vermont  — 8 perfect

James Madison's win leaves 1 perfect men's bracket remaining

One bracket stands above the rest.

After more than 31 million entries were submitted in the major online games (Men's Bracket Challenge, ESPN, CBS and Yahoo) only one men's bracket remains perfect.

No. 12 James Madison's 72-61 win over No. 5 Wisconsin eliminated six of the seven remaining brackets still standing in ESPN's Bracket Challenge . Although ESPN's live perfect tracker shows no remaining perfect brackets, its leaderboard shows one bracket with 300 points  — the maximum possible points through 30 games (10 points for each correct pick).

The last remaining bracket — named "Medalstick 84's Picks 7"  — selected No. 9 TCU and No. 5 Saint Mary's to advance in the final two games of the first round.

Alabama's win leaves 7 men's brackets

Down goes another one.

No. 4 Alabama's 109-96 win over No. 13 Charleston eliminated one of the eight remaining perfect men's brackets in major online games. All seven of the entries  are on ESPN.  

Here's how the remaining brackets picked the final four games:

• Houston — 7; Longwood — 0
• Wisconsin — 6; James Madison — 1
• Saint Mary's — 5; Grand Canyon — 2
• Utah State — 2; TCU — 5

8 men's brackets are perfect after Texas A&M, Duke wins

And then there were eight.

With No. 4 Duke's 64-47 win over No. 13 Vermont and No. 9 Texas A&M beating No. 8 Nebraska 98-83 , the 23 remaining perfect men's brackets across the more than 31 million entries across major online games dropped to 8.

10 games in, around 1 percent of women's brackets remain

Only 10 games into the tournament, we're down to around 1 percent of Women's Bracket Challenge Game entries still perfect.

While No. 8 Alabama's 82-74 win over No. 9 Florida State halved the remaining entries, the brackets have been falling since No. 11 Middle Tennessee's 71-69 upset win over No. 6 Louisville left 4.08 percent of brackets. Here's how we got here in the WBCG:

Yale, Colorado thrillers drop perfect men's brackets to 23

Perfect brackets, meet Yale and Colorado.

Less than 10 percent of Men's Basketball Challenge Game entries had No. 13 Yale wining its first round game and only 29 percent of the entries picked No. 10 Colorado to advance. But with those two crazy finishes, the number of perfect brackets among the major online games dropped to 23 — and we started tracking with more than 31 million entries. Now we're at 23:

• Men's Bracket Challenge Game: 1

Colorado's 102-100 win over No. 7 Florida took out most of the remaining brackets. Moments later, Yale's 78-76 win over No. 4 Auburn  brought the total to 23.

Last year, the longest perfect bracket lasted 24 games. We're now 24 games into this tournament.

The next game on the men's slate is No. 8 Nebraska against No. 9 Texas A&M . Twelve of the brackets have the Huskers, while 11 have the Aggies winning.

383 men's brackets remain with Clemson's win

No. 6 Clemson and No. 11 New Mexico was one of the most evenly split first ground games, including an even 50-50 split among the 38 remaining Men's Bracket Challenge Game entries.

While No. 1 UConn's 91-52 victory over No. 16 Stetson saw some additional brackets fall, none of the remaining MBCG entries selected the Hatters to advance. Around 700 remaining perfect entries among the major online games (MBCG, ESPN, CBS and Yahoo) dropped to 383 with the Tigers' 77-56. win Here's the breakdown:

• Men's Bracket Challenge Game: 19

Approximately 700 men's brackets remain after San Diego State's win

The men's brackets keep falling.

With No. 5 San Diego State's 69-65 victory over No. 12 UAB  and No. 2 Marquette's 87-69 win over No. 15 Western Kentucky , there are around 700 perfect brackets remaining across major bracket games (Men's Bracket Challenge Game, ESPN, CBS and Yahoo).

Only 4.08 percent of women's bracket remain with Middle Tennessee's win

Most of the women's brackets have been eliminated just three games into the tournament.

No. 11 Middle Tennessee's 71-69 win over No. 6 Louisville brought the percent of perfect Women's Bracket Challenge Game entries to 4.08. Nearly 70 percent of brackets in the WBCG had the Cardinals advancing.

The Tugboat mini-cruiser is designed for daily urban commuting and nimble transportation around the neighborhood or a college campus.  It’s also a cool technical board riders can do a lot with (keep reading). At slightly over $150, it’s a reasonably priced quality cruiser.

What is the Tugboat good for?

This board is small and lightweight enough to be easily carried under your arm or attached to a backpack (may even fit inside it).  You can stash it under a desk or inside a locker.

It is sized like a regular skateboard but feels like a longboard when ridden, namely due to its trucks and wheels.  Yet, it’s larger than other mini-cruisers such as the Dinghy.

The Tugboat is fast, smooth and quick turning, easy to carve on with control similar to a street skateboard.  Sidewalk-to-street transitions on the Tugboat are smooth and seamless.  It handles wet terrain and dirt/debris very well, rarely stopping in its track.

Its good-sized kicktail and small nose also make it a good board for street tricks (kicks and flips) and some bowl/ramp shredding.

Experienced longboarders commonly take it downhill – some have even ditched their downhill boards to ride their Tugboat instead.

Heavier skaters particularly appreciate the Tugboat since it’s bigger than your average mini-cruiser, with more room for larger feet and better stability.

Tugboat vs Dinghy?

The Dinghy ( see my full review here ) is the Tugboat’s close little brother, one of the best-known mini-cruisers out there.  Although the two longboards have similar DNAs, the Tugboat is longer (30″ vs 28″) and wider (9.25″ vs 8″) compared to the Dinghy.

The extra 2″ on the Tugboat makes a significant difference in the way the board feels, making it more stable and less sketchy than the Dinghy.  The bigger platform makes for better riding comfort without losing maneuverability.

The Tugboat’s full-sized trucks are wider than the Dinghy’s, also helping make the Tugboat a lot more stable at higher speeds.  This contributes to the board’s being well-suited for some downhill riding.

Overall, the Tugboat thrives to offer the extra room and stability many Dinghy riders are lacking when slashing around town and down hills.  The Tugboat costs around $30 more than the Dinghy. Personally, I think it’s worth every extra penny.

UPDATE : Loaded Boards has recently released the Loaded Ballona , a great new challenger to the Tugboat and Dinghy. The Ballona has very impressive capabilities for commuting, tricks, and freeride, all in a compact and portable package.

Landyachtz Tugboat deck and design

The Tugboat deck is 30″ long by 9.25″ wide with a 14.8″ wheelbase. It’s made of solid 7-ply Canadian maple wood, making it very strong – it will withstand the pressure of a 200-pound rider doing jump tricks without issues.

Again, the size of the deck makes it a perfect board for riding around college campus and carrying it everywhere.

The Tugboat’s 7″ kicktail is quite generous allowing for kick turns and kick/flip tricks.  The 4″ upturned nose is big enough to let you do some nice manuals and nose rides, and comes in very handy in a bowl.

The deck’s stiffness complements the kicks to make the Tugboat a capable freestyle/street/tricks board, while staying true to its street commuting goals (see trucks and wheels sections).

As you can see in the above picture, the board has a nice medium radial concave (0.5′) with slightly uplifted rails, keeping your feet reasonably locked-in for comfortable speed (e.g. downhill).  The concave, however, is not so deep as to keep your feet to move around freely when cruising and freestyling.

Being a “hybrid” type shape close to a traditional popsicle street deck, the Tugboat does not have full wheel cutouts.  However, its beveled  wheel wells  on the bottom, and wheel flares  above, serve the dual purpose of providing extra wheel clearance and blending into the lifted contours for more secure foot placement.

The Tugboat has quality grip tape  applied by the manufacturer.  While rumor has it that the board comes with soft grip for comfortable carrying, this is something of the past. The grip on the newer Tugboat is rough and tough for rugged street and park riding.

The graphic artwork, on the other hand, is very nice and delicate, and it really hurts to scratch it! That’s inevitable though.

Landyachtz Tugboat trucks

The Tugboat comes standard with 155mm traditional kingpin (TKP) Polar Bear trucks – though some configs run the 130mm version instead.  These are pretty big trucks found on some traditional full-sized longboards.  Again, this is in contrast to the Dinghy which can only accommodate very small trucks (105mm) due to its tiny size.

The result is a smoother and more stable ride.  The Bear trucks are awesome, they turn on a dime and are very surfy. Imagine a board as maneuverable and reactive as a street skateboard but with much bigger deck and wheels.  This is a street skater’s dream, particularly when it comes to riding across town.

The Polar Bear trucks give the Tugboat a very smooth and carvy feel due to well-aligned, straight-spinning bearings – the truck hangers are machine-faced with extra gussets under them. Riding the streets and sidewalks on these trucks is pure joy.

When it’s time for freestyle, the heat-treated reinforced hanger offers the strength and smoothness needed for flip and grind tricks.  The baseplate’s 8 holes also allow customization (old vs new school).

The Tugboat is sometimes configured with Paris 149mm trucks, which give the board a different, more traditional “skatey” feeling compared to the Bear trucks.

One thing to note is that the topmount deck results in the board sitting quite high above the ground . This, combined with the deck’s relatively short wheelbase, makes the Tugboat better suited for riders with some experience.  Handling it may be a bit challenging for a beginner longboarder.

The stock bushings are good enough for average riders, but a higher durometer would be best for a heavier rider – a set of Venom bushings may result in smoother cruising.

Astonishingly, the Tugboat comes with wedged risers on the front trucks, something not commonly found on most longboards out-of-the-box. Wedging the front trucks improves the board’s carving ability by making the front wheels turnier than the rear wheels – which are comparatively more stable for control.

This helps to make the Tugboat much “surfier” and more pumpable than a regular longboard.  The wedged front truck contributes to the special carving feeling you get on this board.  See my post on longboard pumping for more on wedging.

Landyachtz Tugboat wheels

By default, the Tugboat comes with 63mm, 78A Fatty Hawg wheels .  These are good-quality, softer wheels that make for a smooth ride on reasonably smooth terrain.

Due to their relatively small size, however, when riding on rougher terrain, poorly paved roads, or sidewalks, the board starts to feel a bit bumpy.  Many riders like to get bigger wheels, 70mm to 76mm such as Orangatang Stimulus for a smoother experience on rougher roads.

Typically, you should not experience wheelbite when switching to bigger wheels, but this will depend on your weight and how loose or tight you run your trucks. If you do get wheel rub, you can easily fix the problem by putting on taller risers , e.g. some Dime Bag 1/8 risers or other 1/4 pads.

Of course, the downside of larger wheels (and taller risers) is that it will make the Tugboat sit even higher above the ground.  It may consequently require more effort to push on over longer distance commutes, and be harder to break into slides.

Note : some hardcode street skaters choose to run smaller, 52mm Ricta Clouds to get a true street feel with the Tugboat’s larger deck, for just shredding sidewalks or skateparks – vs cruising and commuting.

The stock bearings on the Tugboat are 8mm Bear Spaceball bearings , which are quality bearings that are astonishingly quiet and spin smoother the more you ride.  I was impressed by the noticeable improvement to my gliding over time.

Final words

Many Tugboat riders are enthusiastic about this longboard – they find it amazing and often say it’s the best board they’ve ever bought (though the Dinghy remains a strong contender) including after months of using it.

Whether or not one agrees, the Tugboat is a really good choice for quick city commuting. Aside from urban cruising, it’s a good board for skatepark riding and technical street tricks.  Like most Landyachtz products, the Tugboat is a high-quality board at an affordable price.

If you’re a reasonably experienced rider, you can have a blast on this larger-than-average mini-cruiser, and you can easily customize it make it even better for surfing city sidewalks or campus alleys.

Hi there, I have really enjoyed your reviews. thanks so much for the effort you put it. I bought a Big Blazer as my first ever skateboard and now I am considering having a second board just to test out something slightly different. I will only been cruising on it. No tricks. What are your thoughts on the Dinghy Blunt? Do you think this is a good option because it has 130mm trucks so it sits between the tugboat and classic Dinghy. I don’t think I have seen any reviews from you on the blunt. Would love to know your thoughts.

Hi, I'm thinking of getting a tugboat or a classic dinghy, but am not sure which one. I have some experience on a regular skateboard and can ride, push and turn fairly confidently, and would mainly be using the board for getting around places. I'm 6 foot 2, average weight and size 11 shoes, do you have a recommendation between the two?

I just bought a tugboat as a complete beginner. Did I make a mistake? I'm 32 6'0" 180 lbs 12.5 size foot. I tried standing on a dhingy and felt nervous putting both feet on it. I am using this strictly for city commuting. Should I have gone with something like an Ember or Pantheon Trip? Or do you think I can learn on my Tugboat? I bought a helmet, & knee/elbow/wrist pads for falls.

Hey Bob. I'm sure you already know now, but I'm a complete beginner around your age and bought the Tugboat as well.

Simply tighten your trucks a little and the wheel screws to kinda lock you in and slow you down slightly and make you feel more secure/stable on the board.

It does sit pretty high making balancing a bit more difficult while just starting on a skateboard and will extend into attempting to pop an ollie, but since it sits higher - I'm told you can technically pop higher ollies once you get the snap down.

And finally, compared to a traditional longboard that sits low to the group with drop throughs - Learning slides will be very challenging. It's basically just saying it sits higher so it will be harder to balance and control.

Overall, the height and increased balance required seemed like the only negative and non-beginner friendly aspect of the board. Otherwise, it's near perfect in regards to being a technically capable cruiser that can also handle hills you'd feel more secure going down on a longboard. Perfect commuter IMO. Just adjust the wheels/bearings to whatever your city commute presents.

Depends on many things such as your height/weight, where you'll be riding (e.g bike trails vs sidewalks, crowded streets vs open roads, smooth vs rough terrain), whether you will be mainly pushing or pumping, whether you need to carry your board around and/or stow it under a desk), whether you want to do other things as well (e.g. tricks, speed, dancing, bowls etc)... Getting my first skateboard in 20 years. Debating between the Tugboat and the Ditch Life. I will probably mostly cruise but also want to be able to ollie up curbs and maybe try to get my manuals down. Probably not any flip tricks in my future. I have been hashing out this decision for a week. Please help! We I am 41 years old 6’2”, 175lbs size 11.5 feet. I do some long boarding occasionally but haven’t been on a regular deck in 20 years. Thanks!

Hum tough call, the ATV is slightly bigger (31" vs 30" length, 9.75" vs 9.25" width) but same wheelbase. The Tugboat is a pure cruiser shape while the ATV is a dual kick street-like deck. I would say the ATV is more for tricks and flips while the Tugboat is designed for city cruising. They both have a 15" wheelbase though. The ATV comes stock with slightly smaller wheels - better for tricks vs cruise. It really comes down to that nose kick, larger and steeper on the ATV so it may be less comfortable for mellow cruising even though the ATV has slightly more foot platform. In your case I'd probably go for the Tugboat. Or, you can flip a coin :)
