Celebrating 70 years of sailing 1952 - 2022

Warneet Motor Yacht Club was the first Yacht Club established on Westernport in 1952, and is the home of the iconic Warneet Around French Island Race (WAFIR). WAFIR is our Flagship event of the sailing season, and this long running race is a highlight with Victorian sailors. WMYC is located on Rutherford Inlet, Warneet – Westernport, Victoria. Warneet, Victoria

Are you looking for a scenic coastal place to go for a picnic or BBQ? Perhaps you’re looking for a place to throw in the fishing line and go for a short stroll along the coastal track. Look no further. Warneet is a gorgeous picturesque tiny coastal village. Offering a great spot for fishing and has lovely places to spend the day having a picnic or BBQ. The word Warneet is an aboriginal name for river and was formerly known as Crouch’s Beach.

The Warneet South Jetty offers a perfect place to throw in the line. For those with a boat you’ve got the boat ramp next to the jetty. If you don’t have your own boat there are boats for hire near the boat ramp. Ring in advance to ensure the boat hire is open to avoid disappointment. On our visit it was closed, however it was just as restrictions were easing for Covid-19.

  • Warneet Coastal Track

The coastal track is a very easy flat walk offering scenic coastal views. Along the approximately 1.2km stretch starting off with views of the Warneet South Jetty. This is also a great place to try your luck at catching salmon. On our visit fishermen were reeling in the fish. It was a delight to see.

warneet motor yacht club photos

From the Warneet South Jetty you stroll past the Warneet Motor Yacht Club which opened in 1952. The track hugs the Warneet coastline offering picturesque views and great places to sit and take in the ambience. Watch the boats bobbing up and down as you take in the fresh coastal air. As you walk along there are a couple of information boards to help save the birds of Western Port Bay.

warneet motor yacht club photos

The track then takes you to the Warneet North Jetty which unfortunately you cannot go on as the jetty is in need of repair. Petitions are in place to save the jetty. Lets hope they succeed as it truly is a beautiful landmark. Here you can sit and take in the beauty or continue strolling along the track which winds it’s way past the mangroves to the footy oval and tennis courts. On our visit the wattles were just coming out in flower, they looked beautiful.

warneet motor yacht club photos

Just before the tennis courts there is a lookout offering great views over the Rutherford Inlet. Here you can see the boats in the distance as your eye is drawn over the coastal vegetation. This brings you to the end of the Warneet Coastal Track. What a beautiful place to end up. As you look across the waterway you can just see Cannons Creek .

From here you can return the same way you came. If you are looking to walk further you can continue along through the Warneet Nature Reserve to Blind Bight.

For those looking for a place to have a Picnic/BBQ there’s a couple to choose from. If you have your picnic blanket there are many places to stop at along the track.

  • Public Toilets
  • Walking Track
  • Boat launches
  • Tennis Courts

Warneet South Jetty Picnic/BBQ area

If you have kids there are picnic tables over looking the beach and jetty. With a BBQ and a small playground for the kids to enjoy it’s a perfect spot for family and friends to gather. Nearby there are public toilets.

warneet motor yacht club photos

Warneet North Jetty Picnic/BBQ area

A little further along the track which you can either drive or walk to is another area with picnic and BBQ facilities. Again there are scenic views as you enjoy your time with family and friends. The area over looks the Warneet North Jetty which was built in 1956. Petitions have been held to save the old jetty. Sadly, due to parts of the jetty missing you are unable to walk on it.

Warneet Reserve Picnic Area

Overlooking the Warneet Reserve there are picnic tables. A lovely place to set up lunch as you watch the kids kick the footy or soccer ball on the oval, or perhaps watch kids of all ages play cricket. Whatever sport they’re/you’re into it’s a beautiful place to unwind.

Our experience

We had a lovely afternoon strolling along. It is a place we recommend you to go if you are trying to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. With Covid-19 it’s a perfect place to escape people and be out in the fresh coastal sea air.

We grabbed take away which was very yummy from the General Store which you can either drive or walk to. There are sign posts to guide you, you cannot miss it in this tiny town. The people are extremely friendly and helpful.

Call to save Warneet’s popular jetties

warneet motor yacht club photos

By Brendan Rees

Furious locals are calling on Parks Victoria to take urgent action in restoring Warneet’s two jetties, which were both shut without notice.

Alex Stroud, commodore of the Warneet Motor Yacht Club, is leading a community campaign to save the jetties that need urgent repair work, saying they are an integral part of community life.

It comes as the club, along with boat owners and the wider Warneet community were not given notice or explanation of the jetties’ closure on 4 June.

In July, Parks Victoria closed the Warneet North Jetty and the Warneet South Jetty partially closed due to safety reasons of deteriorating structures, with boating access currently remaining opened at the Warneet South Jetty.

“Public safety at these two jetties is our priority. Assessments are ongoing and we will keep the community updated on future plans for the jetties,” a Parks Victoria spokesperson said.

However, Mr Stroud said he hadn’t received a “reply or written acknowledgement” from Parks Victoria until he was emailed a letter on 10 September, which has been seen by Star News.

While the letter acknowledged the importance of Port Phillip and Western Port’s piers and jetties as an iconic part of Victoria and that Parks Victoria was undertaking priority works at several sites, the North and Warneet South jetties were however not within the current works program “at this stage”.

“We will be working with Better Boating Victoria in progressing a precinct plan for the Warneet South boating facilities which should reinforce the importance of the jetty to boating, fishing and the community’s use of the precinct,” the letter read.

Mr Stroud said the Warneet community had been left reeling by the decision and was now rallying to have the jetties “reinstated to a safe and usable condition” in time for summer.

Kelly Lainson, a long term Warneet resident, has encouraged all residents to tie ribbons on the fence of the Warneet North Jetty and leave notes of support. Many residents have chosen to do this to show their support to have the jetties reopened.

“The jetties at Warneet are an integral part of the Warneet and wider boating community, people from all parts of Melbourne and especially the City of Casey use these jetties,” Mr Stroud said.

“Families use them for recreational purposes, such as swimming, fishing and boating; they also learn to sail off them.”

This sentiment was also echoed by Barry Skene, president of the Warneet Residents Association, who said the popular jetties were “important part of Warneet’s atmosphere”.

“It provides recreation for a lot of people in Casey … and they bring their kids here, they’ll have a picnic and they’ll also swim off the front and also use the pier to fish,” he said.

Hastings Liberal MP Neale Burgess has backed the locals to have the jetties reinstated, saying there had been “no effort being made to reopen them” in his address to state parliament on 17 September.

Mr Burgess posed a question to Fishing and Boating Minister Melissa Horne seeking “urgent advice” regarding repair work to the jetties and to allow their safe reopening to the public before summer – in which she has 30 days to respond.

“A government that understood and cared about the needs of Warneet residents would have upgraded at least one of the jetties over the winter months,” he said.

A State Government spokesperson said: “We know how important piers and jetties are to the community but public safety must come first.

“Parks Victoria is continuing to assess these structures.”

Situated on the foreshore of Western Port Bay near Tooradin, 56 km south-east of central Melbourne, this small township is a popular spot for fishing and boating. Warneet (formerly known as Crouch's Beach) is an Aboriginal name meaning 'river'. Les Crouch, owner of the Motor Spares parts business in Melbourne, cut a track through to the foreshore in the 1920s after sighting a patch of white sand whilst fishing in Western Port Bay. He established a campsite to the north of the current yacht club, then built a boat shed which he and his family used as a holiday house, prior to building the first house in Warneet.

Until the 1940s-50s the track went through private property, Bushy Park, which Crouch bought soon after establishing his campsite. The first auction of Crown Land took place in the early 1930s. Crouch became the major landholder in the area. A regular visitor to the area was the cartoonist Alec Gurney, and his Bluey and Curley cartoons in The Herald sometimes featured material gained from fishing trips with Les Crouch.

The tracks made by owners to their blocks of land were not named until 1961. A harbour and jetty were constructed in 1956 and replaced in 1986.

By 1975, Warneet, along with adjacent townships such as Blind Bight, was established as a holiday centre. Its population has a mix of retirees and younger families.

The Warneet Progress Association (now the Warneet Association) was formed in 1945. A telephone service was installed in 1951, followed by electricity in 1956 and mains water in 1969. A store opened in the early 1950s and the Warneet Motor Yacht club in 1952.

Facilities include yacht club, several boat launch facilities, general store, tennis court, oval and recreation area.

Warneet's census populations have been:

census date population
2001 453
2006 515
2011 466
