How does CRAM race dissimilar boats?

Boat Measurements

How do we do it? One of the biggest concepts that our newest sailors get a crash course in is how do we run a regatta with a bunch of different boats. Often we find new sailors under the impression that their 1985 Hobie 16 can't compete with the modern Formula boats. Well the thing is, they aren't even scored together!

The CRAM approach is that when at least 4 boats of the same class are at an event they get their own fleet. When less than 4 boats of a class show up we group them into one of two fleets, a High Open or a Low Open fleet. The high and low refer to their SCHRS rating. Low rated boats are faster while high rated boats are slower. SCHRS stands for Small Catamaran Handicap Rating System. Each type of boat has a time dividing factor with a baseline of 1.000 for the F18 class. All other classes are rated respective of that fixed point. So, if there there is a CRAM event with less than 4 boats each of Formula 16s, A-class, Prindle 16s, and Hobie 18s we would group the Formula 16s and the A-class boats into the Open Low fleet and the Prindle 16s and the Hobie 18s into an Open high fleet. While technically the SCHRS system would allow all of these boats to race together, we prefer to group them to maximize the enjoyment of the event for all sailors. With this approach the faster boats can start another race without waiting for the slower boats to finish. CRAM Race Officers also have the liberty of grouping starts. That is to say that multiple fleets will share a starting sequence and a course number. An example of this would be if we had an event with a fleet of Hobie 16s and an Open High fleet. Since they take a similar amount of time to complete a race the Race Committee may start them together. This provides a more competitive starting line, and if only one or two boats make up an Open Fleet we have the ability to score them against the boats they start with to let them see how they are doing, although trophies will still be awarded to fleets separately. The exception to this approach is if CRAM is partnering with a Hobie Fleet to offer a Hobie Class Association of North American (HCANA) points regatta. In the event of such, HCANA rules dictate than an HCANA fleet has its own start. The boats racing in the HCANA class fleet, for example Hobie 16s, would have their own start. If there are at least 4 other Hobie 16s that are either not class legal or choose not to race with the HCANA fleet then they would form a class Open fleet. In this example it would be a Hobie 16 Open fleet. If there are less than 4 additional non-HCANA boats then they would join the appropriate Open fleet. While a HCANA class fleet cannot share a start with any other fleets, the class Open fleet may share starts with other fleets. There is no worldwide catamaran rule that makes us do it this way. Even our friends over in the Catamaran Racing Association of Wisconsin do it differently. We have just found that it works well for us, with the boat classes that we see at our events, and we think its the best balance of creating a competitive sailing environment that emphasis class fleet racing, while being open to any type of boat interested in sailing with CRAM.

Thanks for the catch Roger. That was a typo and has been corrected.

Roger Cochran

Great write-up James. One comment - on your example of starting H16s and an open fleet, we would typically start the H16s with an Open High fleet which would include similarly rated boats. The Open Low fleet includes the faster boats, typically with spinnakers and would normally get a separate start.

What is the Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme?

The Portsmouth Yardstick System aims to handicap boats based on their relative performance against the other boats they race with. Handicaps are allocated and administered by clubs to suit their local factors such as boat type, wind trends and water type as well as enabling the club to evaluate crew skill factor.

Aims of the scheme

  • To give all clubs the tools to run the fairest handicap racing possible at club, open and national level events.
  • To handicap any boat without the need for measurement
  • To be easily administered by club members
  • To keep a working relationship between clubs and the RYA

How the scheme works

In order to score a handicap race each boats elapsed time (time taken to sail around the race course) must be converted to a corrected time (time converted based on a boats handicap).

This is done by applying a simple correction calculation to each boats elapsed time.

Small Catamaran Handicap Rating System

Clubs that have an active multihull fleet within their club racing may use the Small Catamaran Handicap Rating system (SHCRS)for rating multihulls.

If a club also races mixed fleets where Dinghies, Keelboats and Multihulls race together an agreed conversion rate is used between the RYA and the SCHRS to convert SCHRS to PN "look alike" number.

Any club that uses PN's for Multihulls or PN "look alike" numbers based on SCHRS number is strongly encouraged to use the PYOnline analysis website to further adjust PN's to ensure they are as statistically as accurate as possible.

Customizing arcSail

Extend and customize arcsail to meet the needs of your club, small tweaks to manage your fleets.

Here are a few things you can do to tailor arcSail to your club. These features can be found under the "More" menu of arcSail.

Adding or updating your Boat Classes

arcSail is preloaded with over one hundred boat classes, including centerboard, keelboat, multihull and offshore classes from the Portsmouth Yardstick (PY), North American Portsmouth Yardstick (NAPY), Small Catamaran Handicap Rating System (SCHRS) databases. The handicap ratings for each of these systems are preloaded in arcSail. These ratings are used to compute corrected times for handicapped fleet races. You are free to add additional boat classes and/or update the ratings specific to your club.

For each boat class, set:

The boat class name and type

Set a unique Boat C ode

For each applicable Handicap System:

Set the general Handicap Rating

Wind adjusted Handicap Systems , you can also add the Wind Handicaps for the class

Boat Classes updates can be added at any time but will only affect future races. To change the ratings of boats in past races, re-open the race results and edit each affected boat's handicap rating.

Setting up Custom Handicap Systems

arcSail supports the following common handicap systems out of the box:

Portsmouth Yardstick (PY),

North American Portsmouth Yardstick (NAPY),

Small Catamaran Handicap Rating System (SCHRS)

Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF)

arcSail also allows race officers to define their own handicap systems.

Add a new Handicap System, by clicking the Add button, then set :

The handicap system's name

If the rating is defined on the class (like PY) or the individual boat (like PHRF)

If the computation is time-on-time or time-on-distance

If the computation should be rounded down or to the nearest decimal place

The decimal places to which to round

If there is adjustment for wind, is it applied to the formula or the class?

The computation formula

A dditional Handicap Systems can be added at any time , deleting them may cause issues with Events that are in progress.

Importing additional Burgees

What’s a sail club without a plethora of burgees, right? arcSail comes preloaded with the numeric and alphabetic semaphores, but you are free to upload as many other burgees that you need to identify your fleets and clubs effectively.

For each burgee:

Upload to burgee catalog by clicking “+”

Additional burgees can be added at any time.

Adjusting the g eneral S ettings

There are a few settings that help customize the arcSail experience for your club…

Under More, Settings:

Select “Confirm Deletions” to avoid accidental data loss

Select "Show Animation" to enable/disable the home screen animation (when disabled, your default club's "Home background image" will be shown on the opening arcSail screen instead of the arcSail animation)

"Penalty" applies to “Placement” or “Elapsed time” – used when determining scoring penalties.

"Send Feedback" provides a mechanism to email us for issues (or accolades!) relating to the app.

These settings can be changed at any time - future calculations will be affected by some of these configurations.
