Moorings Gouvia - badly organised and inward-looking.

Boat had faults not reported to us – no read out on fuel gauge ( which we found out before we left), no read out on log, and the wind readout failed. Dicky float switch on auto bilge pump was reported – told to “turn it off” – and we were told how to remove an airlock from the fresh water system (we needed to, which implies they knew there was a fault). The boat is a poor design: in practice the Bimini can’t be lowered, so helmsman can’t see the mainsail when it’s being raised; anchor locker had to be kept open when anchoring; and while airy and spacious inside there’s insufficient stowage for personal gear even for a one week holiday. Little thought for the customer : the fridge was turned off between charters as a matter of policy, so you start with a warm fridge; no cleaning materials left from the previous charter as “a child could poison itself”. We were provided with Heikells Ionian Pilot and a chart – but no additional local information and questions were rebuffed with ‘it depends how good a sailor you are’. The echo sounder datum was set 1 metre below the keel – and it seems that was true for other boats too. So we missed out on places we could have safely gone. The base staff were pleasant but no one could answer any questions off their script – that was always someone else’s job. Emails to the base went unanswered – apparently because the manager had been sacked ( can no one else read emails?). Head office was texting me for my sailing qualifications 6 days into the charter – they’d been shown them and taken copies at the start. We had a good holiday, but that’s because of Corfu not because of The Moorings

Extremely poor customer service

We booked a bareboat charter in BVI a little more than three years ago. There were various, serious issues regarding the boat which I reported to Moorings as they occurred. Nobody took it serious. Upon our return and after several reminders, Moorings finally reverted and offered us a discount on our next charter. As I had already spent too much time on the matter, I did not challenge the compensation offered. When we this year wished to make use of the discount, it turned out that it had expired. I wrote Moorings and asked whether the discount still could be applied. They replied that they normally don’t extend the duration but that they would speak with customer service (whom I was corresponding with in the first place). This is now three months ago and I have still not received a reply.

The benefits of the Moorings Ownership Programme

  • In partnership with Yachting Monthly
  • December 17, 2021

The benefits of the Moorings Ownership Programme are numerous, from cutting down the cost of ownership to delivering you a monthly income..it can also eliminate all running costs too!

The Moorings Ownership Programme allows you all the pleasure of owning a boat without the hassle

The Moorings Ownership Programme allows you all the pleasure of owning a boat without the hassle

If somebody leaned across the yacht club bar and explained that they were getting paid to sail their boat for more than six weeks per year, you’d probably suspect a rum too many.

And yet a charter ownership programme from The Moorings boils down to just that. In point of fact, it pays you to sail any Moorings boat in any of our bases worldwide – from Tahiti or the Whitsundays to Croatia and the Caribbean.

“With more experience than any other charter outfit, The Moorings has had the time to hone its ownership programme to offer some of the most compelling packages available,” says Franck Bauguil VP Yacht Ownership & Product Development at The Moorings. “Our founders more or less launched the global charter industry, and today our team still understands exactly what makes sailors tick.”

Emerging from a tale of sailing passion and good old-fashioned hard work, The Moorings’ story goes back more than 50 years. Four friends who met afloat had the germ of an idea. They pooled their $120,000 savings and invested in six boats – 35-footers built by Pearson in the US.

The Moorings has an award-winning range of boats ranging from 42ft to 50ft

The Moorings has an award-winning range of boats ranging from 42ft to 50ft

With rumours that the British Virgin Islands was soon to get an international air service, the four partners set up shop in Tortola. That was in 1969. Two years later, and the business was already getting new yachts custom designed for charter. The Morgan Out Island 41 was the result, and The Moorings took the boat to the New York Boat Show, selling all 10 hulls to charter owners.

A further 20 boats followed soon afterwards, and the business was launched onto a trajectory of innovative design and solid growth which it still follows today. Of course, the programme now includes more than 850 boats, spread across 18 charter bases around the world.

“We really enable our owners to get the most from their sailing,” says Franck Bauguil. “Just imagine spending two or three weeks on your boat in the Caribbean, then booking a summer trip on a sister ship in the Whitsundays, and a cheeky autumn week in the Mediterranean. It’s so flexible.”

There are other clear benefits, too. An advantageous financing model brings down the cost of ownership, spreading it across several years or delivering a monthly income – as you choose. It also eliminates all running costs: berthing, maintenance and insurance are covered by The Moorings.

At the same time, you are entitled to up to 12 weeks of luxurious cruising per year. Every day you spend aboard costs one point in low season, or two points in high season. Half your 84 points can be used to reserve in advance, with the other half used on short notice.

Cabin of The Moorings boat which are available through the Moorings Ownership Programme

All of the cabins in The Moorings fleet are of the highest standard

The contract typically runs for five or six seasons, at which point you can choose your next step. Some owners like to trade in the boat for a new model and start the programme all over again. Others prefer to take full ownership themselves and set off cruising.

Our award-winning range runs from 42ft to 50ft – the sweet spot for charter and family holidays alike. Beneteau builds our monohulls, while the renowned South African outfit Robertson & Caine builds our catamarans.

“All are impressively specced and finished to a standard that puts us at the apex for mid-sized luxury cruisers,” says Franck Bauguil. “They are all safe, proven hulls that find the perfect balance between performance and comfort. And because they have been designed especially for charter, they are also robust and easy to maintain.”

What Our Owners Say About Investing in The Moorings

moorings yacht ownership reviews

If you want to know what our owners are saying about us, you can read it all here! For over 50 years we have built a reputation based on trust and honesty. We put our owners first, and we are proud to be able to help our family of owners achieve their dreams of owning a yacht in a beautiful destination and discovering the world's best cruising grounds.

"We are on our third Moorings owned yacht over the last 10 years, and our second 5800 crewed sailing catamaran. We had many years and many trips of trouble free chartering all over the world by using yachts at many of the exotic locations available.  Over the past few years The Moorings has had two major hurricanes and now a complete shut down of its worldwide operation for several months — through it all - The Moorings has always lived up to their end of the financial commitments and managed their business through the harsh events that they were dealt.  The Moorings has a long term minded owner with deep resources to continue to enhance the overall experience and the financial arrangement on my end has been very lucrative if you love chartering and enjoyable trips with family and friends."

"Carl and I are yacht owners with Sunsail/Moorings. It is financially beneficial to us because we were already chartering 3-4 times a year. The first new boat that we bought through this company was heavily damaged during hurricane Irma and it was over a year before the yacht was repaired and put back into the charter fleet. The Sunsail/Moorings company NEVER missed paying us our monthly check. We lost no money whatsoever, and all of our vacations have been virtually free since we participated in the ownership program. We traded in our first yacht for a second yacht through the same program, which we would not have done if we thought it was a bad deal. Naturally COVID-19 has greatly impacted tourism and, we still have not missed receiving a check and, in-fact, the company has emailed us, reassuring us that we will continue to receive our monthly payments.

Carl and I receive no special considerations or payments for posting this testimony. I'm simply giving you an honest report on what our experience has been.

One reason we bought into the ownership program is because it would save us money on our sailing vacations. We expected to at least break-even but, the deal has been better than that! We've been able to take friends and family members sailing with us. The other reason we bought specifically into the Sunsail/Moorings ownership program is because they have bases all over the world. Our yacht is in the BVI but, because we are owners, we can fly to other locations and use boats at other Sunsail/Moorings bases. It's a great way to see the world and experience other cultures. We have sailed Croatia, the BVI, the French West Indies (St. Martin), French Polynesia, and Thailand through this program. There are still so many other Sunsail/Mooring bases that we want to sail from!

If you have really close friends or business partners, you could even consider being partners in ownership, after you learn all the details of this program ."

"The love affair began in early 2010. The LADY B won all our hearts and we couldn’t wait to spend time with her. She was a Moorings 474PC and quickly took us anywhere our hearts desired. We stood out on deck under the stars while, at anchor in Anegada and said 'It just don’t get any better than this'!

And then it did!

In late 2013  DOUBLED came into our lives. We had purchased her in late 2013 and took delivery in the summer or 2014. She was Hull #1 of the 514PCs  While we hated to see LADY B go, we did see her occasionally on the dock while she continued to be busy on charter for a few years. DOUBLE D was a 514PC and she was an amazing hostess. Once we took a first set of friends out on her, the requests to join us never stopped. We were on a mooring ball at Cooper Island when we were all sitting around enjoying a cocktail on the fly bridge and we said 'It just don’t get any better than this'!

It may have been the tequila, but my wife said she had found our next boat. She had worked her trading magic and we were about to say goodbye to DOUBLE D 514PC and hello to 5800 Crewed DOUBLE D. She is an amazing boat with a fantastic crew.  We have had her since 2015 and she is a true joy to be aboard.

We were devastated with what happened to The Moorings and the islands with Irma and got back down to the base as soon as they reopened and they did come back better than before with so much hard work from everyone. It was wonderful to see so many friends still there.

Now we are all facing a disaster called COVID-19. It cancelled our plans to be in Thailand in April.

We know it will pass and can’t wait to be back on a boat under the stars and say 'It don’t get no better than this', and then see how it does.

"We’re relatively new to the Moorings but have enjoyed the time and opportunities it presents our family.  We are experienced sailors (mostly inshore racing) so the ocean cruising style of boating was new to us.  The Moorings has provided a way for us to maximize our access to fun while helping to minimize the headache and overhead.  We love the fact that we can conveniently see some of the best spots in the world without having to deal with all the logistics that would be associated with traditional boat ownership.  The comfortable and well maintained boats make a group trip pleasant so we don’t need to waste lots of time dealing with boat issues before and after trips with friends.  Finally the people at the Moorings have been great to work with helping make every step of our adventures a blast!"

As a  Moorings Power Cat owner I would like to relay our experience with The Moorings Ownership Program. First and foremost is our positive experience with the Moorings staff over our first year of ownership. Last year we were able to take 3 amazing trips with Moorings; Abaco, Minorca and St. Martin, and were provided excellent support in the planning and execution of each experience. Our 51PC the ‘Guanahani Dream’ was based in Abaco; now in Nassau, and we were able to enjoy eight beautiful days there traveling from Marsh Harbor to Double Breasted Cay and spent some very memorable time on Spanish, Sandy and Green Turtle Cays. Our trip to Minorca couldn’t have been better as the weather allowed us to circumvent the entire island on a Moorings 433PC. The landscapes and Spanish culture we experienced is beyond description. Our final trip of the year found us in St. Martin enjoying both French and Dutch hospitality and cuisine and the beautiful British island of Anguilla. If you want to spend vacations at amazing places all over the globe in a private setting that puts you front and center in some of the most beautiful locations the world has to offer I suggest you consider joining The Moorings Ownership Program.

"As the name implies, Wild Irish Rose IV is our fourth sailboat with the Moorings. We started sailing with The Moorings for our honeymoon, 30 years ago this September (2020). We were booking a sail almost every year when we started to look into The Moorings Ownership Program. Within our first two sails as owners, we knew we’d be with them for life. No matter what base we charter from, regardless of their position, the dock staff is without fail absolutely exceptional and that aspect right there can make or break a charter. It’s hard to explain, but it just feels different when you sail as an owner and we are so proud to bring our friends and family to any Moorings base. We know that everything will be done right and that our guests will experience the sail of a lifetime. Three years ago we were sailing off the northern end of Grenada with our grandson Milo, 18, at the helm and his proud grandfather sitting across from him. We were hitting gusts and big waves and Dave was coaching Milo through the sail. As a wave crashed over the bow and absolutely drenched every single person on deck and Milo squealed with delight, I looked at my husband and said “This is why we own with the Moorings...” (true story!)"

"This whole experience has been wonderful. Everything from meeting with our sales agent at a few boat shows and her patience with us during the buying process to chartering our boat for the first time. We couldn’t be happier with the Moorings family."

"My Moorings experience has been excellent, and continues to get better. After a great five years with our Moorings 4800, we love our Moorings 5000 and we are looking forward to the new Moorings 534 power cat or something else new in a few years. BVI continues to redevelop and we can't wait to see what's in store!"

" Owning with The Moorings is an affordable way to have a beautiful boat. The key word is affordable.  Because the yacht is in the Moorings Ownership Program, it helps subsidize the cost of the yacht. And it is nice to be able to go to a beautiful place and enjoy your boat. Lyndon, the Manager of the powercats in Tortola, has become a good friend and one of the reasons we are on our 5 th Moorings boat

"We have enjoyed our ownership in the Moorings program, starting with Sunsail in 2004 and then Moorings in 2007.  We are happy owners of two boats now, both in Tortola, our sixth and seventh boats.  Sailing all over the world, from Greece, Croatia, Tahiti, the Bahamas, Belize, and all over the Caribbean, our family and friends have enjoyed lots of fun times!  Some of our favorite events were Owners Flotillas and BVI Spring Regattas.  We try to sail about 6-weeks every year depending on where we are going.

One of our most enjoyable parties is the costume party at the Owners Flotilla.  Some of our friends have the zaniest costumes!!  The picture attached is from 2014 Spring Regatta in Tortola."

"Our first experience with The Moorings was in 1990 in the BVI on a classroom boat.  We were part of a flotilla with our sailing club from Lake Texoma. The instructor Paul, was evaluating our sailing skills to obtain our bareboat certification. This began our love of sailing, The Moorings and the BVI.

We continued to charter with The Moorings for the next twenty years until 2010 when we bought into the Moorings Ownership Program.  The Robertson Caine Moorings 4600 catamaran was our first love.  After being in the BVI fleet for six years, we traded for a Robertson Caine Moorings 4800. Unfortunately, Sea Wing met her demise with Hurricane Irma less than a year later. The Moorings continued payments to us until the boat was found and deemed a total loss.  We received the full amount of the insurance within a short amount of time thanks to the Moorings.

Our next boat, a Roberson Caine Moorings 5000, was delivered in October 2018. Christened once again as Sea Wing.  Alas, she was hit and severely damaged by another charter company boat last June. Thankfully, no one was injured on either boat and Sea Wing was towed to Road Town.  She is in dry dock awaiting the resolution of the insurance companies. Throughout this process, The Moorings has continued our guaranteed payments each and every month and we are still able to use our points to sail anywhere in The Moorings fleet.  After all of the wonderful moments and challenges we’ve encountered in our time with The Moorings, we plan to buy another Robertson Caine Moorings 5000 as soon as possible.

Owners, Joe & Pam Hoing, M5000 BVI, S.V. Sea Wing

The Moorings Ownership Program

  • Thread starter Chris
  • Start date Aug 29, 2006
  • Forums for All Owners
  • Ask All Sailors

I'm looking at investing in The Moorings Ownership Program and am seeking any positive/negative experiences with this program. Looking at the numbers, quality of boat offered and the opportunity to sail in other locations, to me it's a no-brainer. I know of individuals who are invested (more than one boat) in the program and they have nothing but positives to say. I'm just looking for a broader spectrum of experiences to assist me with my decision.

Depends on your goals The answer to your question is tied to your objective. If your objective is to enjoy sailing in a number of locations with some fequency, it is not a bad deal. If you are looking for a way to have someone pay for your boat, think carefully about the condition you will find "your" boat at the end of the timeshare period. If you are looking to make money (positive cash flow), ask the question that has appeared on this site many times. If these boats consistently generate positive cash flow, why don't the charter companies own boats? I am a Moorings fan, but think there are a lot of better ways to make money or end up with a boat that you would want after the charter life cycle. If you have the time and resources to travel around the world on sister boats, go for it!

Depends upon your time and money You referred to being able to sail in other locations. That is a great dream - it sounds fantastic. You are considering spending a lot of money, so look at this away from the pretty brochures. Honestly evaluate how often, during the time frame of the Moorings ownership program, that you would be able to spend time and dollars on travel to exotic locations and then spend 7-14 days at a time on a charter boat. Then consider, at the end of the ownership program, what are you going to do with a boat that has been actively used by other people in the charter fleet. Bring it home? Keep the boat and move it to a second-tier charter operation? Trade-in on a new charter boat?

I looked too ...and came to the conclusion that it might be a good deal if you want to spend all your vacations sailing. I like sailing as much as the next guy ( I own a boat) but I have to go skiing every now and then too.

The Moorings and sister company Sunsail are part of Travelopia, which in turn is owned by KKR, a global investment firm with 578 billion dollars in assets under management. Moorings), taking possession in April, 2005. The boat had been in charter for just two years. Though it was kept very clean, it was surface clean, and short turnaround time meant that shortcuts were taken.

Examples:
The problem with some of the damage is that the boat is never truly right again. I remember reading in the USVI charter boat rag about a boat that was sunk due to a really, really stupid mistake by the charterers. The boat was refloated, clearly it was not written off as a total loss. I wouldn't want to have been the owner of that boat.

Just remember that any boat coming off charter is going to need a lot of work.

There are a lot of people who go into it, though, so there has to be an up side to the ownership programs. I don't know what the finances are - if the boat can be paid off through the charters, and the owners even get a little cash, then they might find that the program is worth it. Free charter vacations twice a year, and at the end of the charter/ownership period sell the boat and use the cash received to put a down payment on a new boat that nobody but you will use!

Boat: 40 Beneteau CC
program. We know the financial pitfalls, depends what you put down. What do you like about the Moorings Program? We understand Moorings will make concessions to their , if asked. The first 5 years are a no brainer, it's phaseout where I hear the nightmares. Talk us into being owners.

at "phaseout' time in Tortola... will never do it again. Their mechanics are crap, riggers are as bad and re-gasketing the consists of pumping in domestic .
A friend of mine in the went out to inspect his Cat at 'Phaseout', found it immaculate... arranged for a crew to sail it to where he lives..
When it arrived the had been switched along with a and a few other things...
DON'T DO IT... you'll end up with an abused piece of crap

after phase out and they looked in excellent condition. I'm sure there are bad stories, but you have to think it is in Moorings best interest to keep the in good shape. As a previous Moorings customer, I have to say the boats are in excellent shape, better then most second tier companies.

331 purchased in 06, 5yrs old with 3500hrs on the which blew its on the way to , then the starter and in the next coupla months.... watertanks leaked.. Was assured all was refitted but any probs would be fixed... when I sailed back to take em up on it I was told as I'd gone "Out Island" tough luck...lol.

Boat: 56' Fountaine Pajot Marquises
that had been in their fleet for 8 years and have to say it was in very good condition. There where areas that showed use, but I was expecting much worse. I personally wouldn't be scared off of looking at a used one to .

But, new right now? In my opinion, very risky. How are they guaranteeing revenue? I personally can't believe that the first 5 years are a "no brainer". If the costs $400 new and sells or is worth $200 after the , did you get $200 worth of use? Use whatever numbers you want, but the boats devalue hugely in the first 4 or 5 years.

What you may think about is one of their boats and putting it in a second tier company like Provalor.

(the charter boat one); that you should just buy a boat coming out of the fleet. If the owner option wasn't a better deal for the Moorings, why would they do it? Why buy a boat to "made" $100/month over your payments while it depreciates much more than that.

one boat from the Moorings ever buy a second boat.

Then, you might insist that Moorings give you the names and numbers of five or six owners who had boats, once, but did not buy a second boat.

Finally, ask the Moorings to put in writing a dollar figure they will guarantee to pay you for the boat at the end of the charter period if you can't sell it on the open market within six months.

I can pretty much assure you the last question will end the discussion.

Boat: R & C Leopard 38 (2001)
, 2 with footloose Tortola / phased out 2 years ago. Best thing I've ever done. Boat currently trades for ~65 K more than I put into it. Wouldn't sell it for 100K more.

I was lucky. The 2000 38 has retained it value exceptionally well and is still in strong demand almost a decade later. Built strong, easy to maintain, a pleasure to sail.

I think the OP is correct in that the 5 charter years are a breeze in... one sense... there little you can do about anything so just let the management company take care of it and don't sweat it. Like getting on a plane...let the pilot fly while you sit back and enjoy the ride.

Phase out... A while back it was stated very well that "You earn a good phase out, and the currency is time and personal attention." The key words at phase out are: "Broken is unacceptable". Your will take a snap shot of condition but can not tell you what happens after systems have been running for a while. , perforations, , bad , etc etc. Those you must find for yourself and bring to the attention of Moorings before you sign off.

I was in Tortola for 6 weeks while the phase out was done. Lived on board for 2 weeks before I signed off. I got a great boat in terrific condition.

Moorings truly "gets it". They know very well that their business depends on chartering and delivering good boats.

Regarding Moorings mechanics (Tortola), it is my opinion that they are highly skilled, and take great pride in their . I got to know them quite well during my phase out and they were thrilled to make solid, quality for the owner instead of the quick turnaround fixes that are typical in a busy charter season.

, no worries when a storm rolls through, no wondering about whether you remembered to shut the seacock when you left. On the other hand, there is none of the emotional joy of owning a sailboat. It's like you own a rental car at the Ft. Lauderdale .

Assume you are not going to "break even" (e.g. Down payment plus cost minus honest value at end of five years). But if you include the value of the , dockage, and you come out OK. But don't kid yourself that this is an investment.

It makes no sense if you don't use the Moorings "free" weeks at as many Moorings bases as possible. Unless you are going to take three years to circumnavigate in your own boat - this is by far the most economical way to sail at many of the world's great cruising spots. If you and your spouse are not ready to spend four to six weeks a year sailing in different locations, don't buy a Moorings boat.

After the charter, do you really want to own an old charter boat when you can get a privately owned boat for only a little more that has been used 1/5th as many days and cared for by a meticulous owner?

At the end of the charter, I let the Moorings sell my boat. People like yourself do check the of old Moorings boats so they pay attention - and there's a looking for a commission who knows it has to pass the buyer's . Sure it cost us 10% (the commission) but no stress and no worry. Sale was a little less than I wanted - but it always is with boats. We never even saw the boat in its last year since we were sailing at other Moorings bases.

Moorings and Sunsail owners to their yachts for various reasons. They all expressed satisfaction with the operation. They were also VERY attentive regarding maintenance. One might describe them as "nags." A correlation?

I have also worked closely with Horizon fleet managers in and and think very highly of that organization.

Remember: it is your boat/investment/capital good... You have to take care of it in the end.

Boat: 58 Taswell AS
Pond 2 weeks ago. chain broke, it drifted out the inlet onto the reef - a total loss. The management didn't seem upset. Someone in Boulder, CO probably doesn't think it was a good investment.

My plan is to use the owners program to gain experience and knowledge of sailing through the use of the boat (probably hiring a captain the next 3 or so trips). The ultimate plan is a goal 10-15 years from now to circumnavigate the world. I can't think of a better way to gain experience and to have some ownership of a boat at the end of the plan.
