Luxury Yacht Charter: A Step-by-Step Guide

S A LT Charter Consultants are well-versed in charter regulations and knowledgeable about charter destinations. They meticulously select and shortlist yachts according to your brief and budget from the global charter fleet to minimise your time in searching.

They aim to comprehensively grasp your requirements and the needs of your charter guests. Gathering ample information about your charter requirements and the activities you intend to enjoy onboard will streamline the process of selecting the ideal charter yacht for you.

There are natural seasonal charter destinations. The most popular charter destinations are the Mediterranean and Northern Europe in the summer, while the Caribbean and the Bahamas are perfect for winter charters. Your charter dates, to a certain degree, will dictate the best destination for you.

However, there’s a world to explore while on charter – the South Pacific, Indonesia, the Red Sea, Central America, and Antarctica, to name a few. Our Charter Consultants can advise on the best time of year to visit these more off-the-beaten-path charter destinations, guide you on what to expect when you arrive, and customise the itineraries to match your preferences.

Your charter budget should be broken down into 5 areas.

  • The charter fee – is defined by the weekly charter rate or the pro-rata daily rate for hiring the yacht. 50% is required on booking, with all remaining funds paid 4-6 weeks prior to your charter.
  • Tax or VAT – charged based on the country where you embark or disembark. This is a percentage of the net charter fee.
  • Delivery costs – applied if you want your yacht delivered to a specific port of embarkation or disembarkation.
  • Provisioning and expenses are added as a percentage of the charter fee and cover all fuel, food, berthing, and other expenditures, commonly referred to as the APA (Advanced Provisioning Allowance).
  • Tips – discretionary gratitude depends on the level of service you feel you have received. The yacht crew works exceptionally hard during the charter; showing gratitude through a tip is generally customary.

Visit our FAQ on charter to get more details on charter finances.

Our Charter Consultants will provide significant value in finding the perfect yacht, they review the yachts’ testimonials and industry colleagues’ comments to compile and complete a shortlist. They then negotiate the best price for you and handle all contractual requirements.

Once you receive your shortlist, it is important to confirm your choice swiftly. All yachts remain available until an offer has been accepted. To avoid disappointment, select and confirm a yacht as quickly as possible.

Our Charter Consultants work closely with you to ensure all charter arrangements are in place. This involves itinerary planning, booking activities and excursions ashore, making restaurant and spa reservations, and even organising live entertainment onboard. Every charter detail is covered, from arranging transfers to the yacht to provisioning lists that encompass all dietary requirements, daily newspapers, flowers, fine wines – you name it, we will make it happen.

We introduce you to your captain at the appropriate time, who will confirm that all those final tiny details are in place. We remain in contact with you and the captain while you are on charter and monitor the APA to ensure there are sufficient funds to cover your expenses during the charter period.

Featured Charter Destination

The seemingly endless coastline of Croatia is speckled with hundreds of magnificent islands offering a profusion of spectacular cruising opportunities, from the tiny, verdant and unpopulated to the massive, arid and sporting ancient towns and villages. Don’t miss out on the mouthwatering Croatian cuisine. Some of these fine dining and Michelin-star restaurants are the best in the world.

The sun-kissed archipelago of the Bahamas boasts an enchanting array of islands, each with its own unique charm and allure. From secluded, palm-fringed islets to larger expanses adorned with vibrant towns and historic settlements, the Bahamas offers a wealth of captivating destinations for an unforgettable cruising experience. Indulge in the delectable Bahamian cuisine, where local flavors and culinary artistry converge in a symphony of taste. Explore renowned dining establishments, some of which have garnered international acclaim and Michelin-worthy recognition, making the Bahamas a gastronomic paradise for discerning palates.

Northern Europe

Western mediterranean, eastern mediterranean, caribbean & bahamas, north america, central america, south america, south pacific, indian ocean, south east asia, australasia, charter itineraries, destinations:.

  • Mediterannean
  • Rest of the World

In most cases you will be required to pay (by wire transfer) a deposit of 50% of the total charter fee upon signing the Charter Agreement. The remaining 50% of the charter fee plus the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), and any applicable taxes, delivery fees and security deposit are due no less than one month before the beginning of your charter.

The charter fee generally covers the rental cost of the yacht and any crew that comes with it. There are some exceptions particularly seen in the Indian Ocean and South East Asia cruising area, these yachts may be detailed as “all inclusive”. In addition to the charter fee the APA covers all other variable expenses such as: fuel, berthing, customs, communications, food and drink. The APA essentially creates a bank account for the Captain (and chef) on the yachts to provision on your behalf.

Most cruising destinations do have a local tax or VAT levy to pay which is a percentage of the charter fee (not on the APA). It is fairly complex and varies depending on the region you charter in. Your charter consultant will advise you on this in more detail once you have a better idea of the destination.

If your charter has been everything you hoped it would be, by all means, show your appreciation with a gratuity. However, please note that although crew gratuities are customary, they are left at your sole discretion. As a guideline, we would suggest between 10% and 20% of the charter fee to be split equally between the crew depending on the level of service.

We would strongly recommend you take out Cancellation and Curtailment Insurance to protect your investment if unforeseen circumstances prevent or curtail your charter plans. Additionally, all guests should be covered by Personal Accident and Medical Insurance, with their personal effects insured against theft, loss or damage.  Other forms of insurance, such as Charterer’s Liability may also be prudent. Our Charter Consultants will be pleased to assist you with additional advice in this matter.

It is common practice on most yachts for small quantities of personal laundry to be carried out by the yacht’s crew as a service. Please note that these terms also allow the crew to refuse politely to do excessive quantities of laundry on board or to handle particularly delicate items. It may be possible to have certain laundry done ashore professionally if time allows, the cost of which will be deducted from the APA.

Throughout the pandemic, Most owners were flexible and understood that you might have concerns over travel restrictions. During this period we include a special clause to the charter contract allowing a change to the dates or ports if you were not able to travel to the place of embarkation or disembarkation for the charter period.

Clauses varied depending on the individual owner and the yacht’s schedule. We initiated a 12-month postponement clause to be written into the contract and in some instances, Owners offered a full cancellation if there was a restriction on travel to the yacht’s destination. COVID tests were arranged for crews before guests boarded the yacht and longer periods between bookings were mandatory to allow yachts to undertake a thorough COVID clean.

Should we find a similar situation occur in the future – the charter industry is able to adapt to the specific requirements set out by health and Safety guidelines.

We suggest packing your personal items in soft luggage bags as this enables easier storage on board.

No pets are allowed on board unless previously agreed and permitted by the Owner.

Culinary excellence is often the highlight of any charter and your yacht’s chef will customise this and arrange a menu selection in advance. Prior to your charter we will ask you to complete an information sheet noting your culinary preferences or any special dietary requirements, beverages, newspapers, flowers or other special requests. Details on any medical issues, allergies and special occasions can be noted. We encourage you to give as much information as possible, as it helps the crew to have a detailed understanding before you step on board.

It is perfectly acceptable to go barefoot on the yacht, most guests find it is more comfortable as well! Deck shoes may be worn but shoes for ashore should be taken off before coming back on board.

Cruising distances will vary according to your preferred itinerary; however, to maximise your enjoyment, we suggest cruising no more than 4 hours during the day and being flexible to change course for weather or more time to enjoy a particular new location. If longer cruising periods are required, we suggest discussing with your captain the options to cruise during the night.

In many cruising destinations, the use of personal watercraft (i.e. wave-runners) is restricted or forbidden unless the operator holds a PWC Licence based on local operating regulations. We can advise where these licences are required, though it remains the charters’ and their guests’ responsibility to obtain the correct licence should they wish to operate the yachts’ personal watercraft while on charter.

If a yacht does not advertise scuba diving as a guest facility, it is usually possible to arrange a local shore based diving company to bring all the necessary equipment and take you and your guests on a specific diving trip subject to local law restrictions. This is commonly referred to as “rendezvous diving”.

In most cases, smoking is not permitted inside the yacht for safety reasons. Many yachts operate a policy of smoking permitted on deck only, however, please check the policy as each yacht varies in their approach to smoking on board.

“Everyone was extremely happy on our charter! It was an epic trip which we will be talking about for the rest of our lives. Mare, thank you again for connecting us with them and making all this possible! We will charter again and I will be in touch with you when we do.”

“I have nothing but wonderful things to say about 26 North Yachts. I used the company’s services for a yacht charter that was part of a business/charity event. They were extremely professional and organized from the initial set up to the end of the charter. The captain and crew were fantastic and very accommodating.  They also brought some new elements to the evening with their service and decor. I have booked a second charter for an event in April. We are looking forward to another seamless event. Thank you again to 26 North Yachts.”

“What a wonderful experience! The yacht was beautiful and impeccably kept. The captain and the first mate went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed and were committed to ensuring we had a great time aboard the ship. I would highly recommend 26 North Yachts to anyone considering chartering a yacht!”

The Best Yacht Charters You Can Book Around the World

Whether you’re looking for seven decks of entertainment, a family-friendly trip, or a diving-focused Caribbean voyage, you’ll find it here.

luxury yacht charter destination

There are few experiences as luxurious and awe-inspiring as a yacht charter . You can explore the world at your leisure, spend quality time with friends and family in an intimate setting, and the service is second to none. We've rounded up the most exceptional new yacht charters to book around the world. They're sure to inspire your next voyage, whether you want to relax along the Amalfi Coast or explore remote corners of the globe.

In the yachting world, Loon is known for an exceptional array of water toys — perhaps the best in her class. There's a FunAir inflatable slide that goes from the third deck straight into the ocean, an in-water pool, and a luxurious 43-foot Everglades tender. You can hop on paddleboards, sea kayaks, Waverunners, or a Seabob to explore nearby islands and coves.

The adventurous can try kite surfing or Lift e-Foil surfboards, which seems effortless when you watch the crew fly past, but is actually quite challenging. Loon is also a scuba diver's dream. The crew has several master divers and dive instructors who can take you out each morning, and they have all of the equipment you need onboard. They can also certify new divers during the trip.

The 180-foot yacht has a staggering 1,100 gross tons of living space, elegant design, and an amiable and attentive crew. Loon has two master staterooms, including a unique one on the upper deck. It has wraparound windows that offer unparalleled views of the surroundings. There are two salons, including one with recliners and a projector for movie night, plenty of spaces for dining alfresco, and an oversized infinity-edge Jacuzzi with a wet bar nearby. Fancy a workout? Loon has a treadmill, exercise bike, rowing machine, and free weights in the beach club. You'll be hard-pressed to find better workout views than this.

The crew is absolutely lovely and specializes in setting up unique experiences. You might have a pizza night on board, a barbecue on a private beach, or sundowners at the Instagram-famous Loon Bar. The crew will even take you to a picture-perfect sandbar and serve you drinks as you loll in the warm water.

Loon is available for charter from IYC in the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Bermuda during the winter months and in the Mediterranean in the summer months. Rates begin at $325,000 a week plus expenses.

Nansen Explorer

For the ultimate Antarctica adventure, you can't beat a voyage aboard Nansen Explorer . This former research vessel has all of the technical features needed to safely explore one of the world's most remote and dramatic landscapes and, thanks to a retrofit in 2021, an ultra-luxe interior design that wouldn't look out of place in St. Tropez. For exploration, Nansen Explorer has an Ice-1A classed 236-foot hull and an ice-experienced captain and bridge team, which means she can go deeper into the ice than other polar-classed superyachts. There's a heli-deck with onboard fueling capabilities, so you can see the vast landscape from the sky, or even go heli-skiing. There are plenty of toys that allow you to get up close and personal with wildlife and nature, including kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, dive equipment, and Zodiacs.

The interiors are so stylish, modern, and well-appointed that you'll forget you're in the middle of Antarctica rather than at a swanky hotel. The ship originally accommodated 60 passengers, but now it holds just 12 guests in seven cabins, including an owner's suite and a VIP suite. Each cabin has large windows that showcase the stunning vistas outside the ship. The sumptuous Scandanavian-inspired decor features shades of grey and white, which reflect the surrounding environment. There's a cozy lounge with a bar and a fireplace, perfect for warming up after an excursion to see penguins or whales.

Nansen Explorer is available for charter from Plan South America in Antarctica. Rates begin at $340,000 a week and are all-inclusive.

Yachting in French Polynesia is always a blissful experience, but Dardanella takes relaxation to the next level with bespoke, wellness-focused charters planned by onboard wellbeing facilitator Ayumi Gallagher. The wellness experience is all-encompassing, including fresh, detoxifying food, mindfulness workshops, yoga sessions, Pilates, meditation, and massages alongside traditional yacht activities, like diving, surfing, and tender safaris exploring the pristine waters and nature of French Polynesia. The captain is also a qualified marine biologist and ecologist, so he's the perfect person to show you this unique environment. There are two dive instructors, 12 sets of dive gear, a Nitrox dive compressor, and underwater photography equipment, so you can capture the beauty underwater, too. As an expedition yacht, Dardanella is well-suited for exploring remote destinations. The 121-foot yacht was refit in 2018 and has five luxurious cabins.

Dardanella is available for charter from 37south in French Polynesia. Rates begin at $100,000 a week plus expenses.

With seven decks, there's something for everyone aboard Wheels . This massive yet elegant yacht measures 249 feet, weighs almost 2,000 gross tons, and has lots of standout amenities including a spacious cinema for eight guests, a huge aquarium, massage room with a dedicated onboard masseuse, air-conditioned gym, and the main salon converts to a disco complete with lights and a smoke machine for those late-night dance parties. The split-level master suite has panoramic views, a study, and plenty of space, and there are four spacious guest suites on the main deck. Outside, there are plenty of relaxation areas, including sunpads, a hot tub, several dining areas and bars, and an enviable water sports area with two Jet Skis, four wave runners, three seabobs, a luxurious tender, and plenty more toys. The crew is very active and can teach you to wakeboard, kitesurf, sail the new Hobie cat catamaran, or scuba dive. They can also lead yoga and fitness classes.

Wheels is available for charter from Fraser Yachts in the Caribbean. Rates begin at $680,000 a week plus expenses.

It's not uncommon for yacht charterers to "upgrade" their yachts year after year, chasing newer and bigger boats, which is makes Big Sky 's number of repeat bookings even more impressive. The 157-foot yacht has been a charter favorite since 2010, and she recently underwent a refit leaving her in immaculate condition. Big Sky can accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms, including a full-beam master that spans the width of the yacht, and there's plenty of room onboard to relax, including the main salon with large windows and a state-of-the-art TV system. The sky lounge is perfect for entertaining — it has an onyx bar and sliding windows that make you feel as if you are outside. Of course, if you do want to relax outdoors, there are three teak decks with space for dining and a large sundeck with a Jacuzzi, sun pads, couches, and a bar.

Big Sky is available for charter from Northrop & Johnson in the Bahamas. Rates begin at $180,000 a week plus expenses.

This glamorous new superyacht caused quite a stir when she debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2021. It's rare for a brand-new superyacht of this size to be available immediately for charter, so book your trip on Tatiana early. This 263-foot yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests, who are guaranteed impeccable service from the 20 crew members. She has a great selection of water accoutrements and a stunning design with a large amount of interior space, including a deck dedicated to the owner's suite. There are also two VIP staterooms, four double cabins, and a twin cabin. While away any rainy days in the movie room or shooting some pool. Tatiana also has a fabulous beach club with a large bathing platform, bar, and outdoor lounge.

Tatiana is available for charter from IYC in the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Bermuda during the winter months and in the Mediterranean in the summer months. Rates begin at €775,000 a week plus expenses.

Nour El Nil Meroe

Step back in time aboard Nour El Nil Meroe , a traditionally inspired Egyptian yacht full of modern amenities and luxurious design. Meroe is available for charter through Black Tomato, a top luxury travel company known for its expertly curated trips with exclusive experiences and a focus on local culture. Meroe is styled like a classic dahabiya boat, with authentic decor featuring whitewashed walls and linens alongside Parisian decor details. The VIP cabins have floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the Nile — we can't think of a more fabulous way to have breakfast in bed — while the other cabins have large windows. The shaded roof terrace has plenty of spots for lounging and dining alfresco, and there's a cheery indoor salon with red-and-white striped decor and cozy couches. On your charter, you'll slowly sail down the Nile River from Luxor to Aswan. You can charter just the yacht voyage or book the Ultimate Egypt trip , which includes adventures on land as well as the yacht charter (think: private tours of the pyramids, exploring temples, or taking a jeep safari around Siwa).

El Nil and the Ultimate Egypt trip can be booked through Black Tomato . Rates begin at $5,800 a person.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

One of 2022's most anticipated travel launches is the new The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . While this is technically a small-ship cruise, every element has been designed to make you feel as if you are aboard a superyacht. The fleet will ultimately have three custom-built yachts, each with 149 suites. However, in 2022, the collection will launch with their first luxury vessel: Evrima . The suites all have private terraces, which isn't something you can expect aboard even the largest superyacht. And of course, the amenities are incredible. It has a beautiful spa, stunning marina terrace (set up like a yacht beach club), an infinity-edge pool, a large gym, and plenty of entertainment. The dining options are seemingly endless, including the main restaurant, the Evrima Room, S.E.A., which features a menu by acclaimed chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, Talaat Nam, a Southeast Asian spot, and several casual options.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's inaugural voyage is set for May 2022 and pricing is dependent on the itinerary. Learn more about the trips here .

The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

jalopnik

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts — vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea in 2024

Image for article titled The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

As summer reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine a better way of spending a vacation than channeling your inner ship captain and sailing across the ocean.

In recent years, yacht companies have reported a boom in sales — far from the decline that many in the industry feared, due to both the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic realities of the Russia-Ukraine War.

“I spent my days [in 2020] doing worst-case scenarios and drawing up the budgets to go with them,” Giovanna Vitelli, chairwoman of Azimut|Benetti, the world’s largest yacht manufacturer, told the Economist in 2023.

Instead, her company reported a 23% growth in production value in 2023 —a reality that is not unique to just one yacht manufacturer. The luxury yacht market is expected to grow in value from $7.67 billion in 2023 to $17.33 billion by 2032, according to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights .

Analysts attribute the ships’ rise in popularity to the increasing number of extremely wealthy individuals . Yachts have long been considered a status symbol — a reality that has only increased as wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group of high status individuals .

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts —vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea as of this year. This is nearly quadruple the number of yachts seen in the ocean just three decades ago, according to Bloomberg .

Aside from an increase in popularity, the yacht industry has seen other changes in recent years. Increasingly, those in the market for a luxury ship are turning to alternate means of powering their vessels, as critics point to the excess emissions traditional yachts produce simply for recreational use.

In their 2024 report, Fortune Business Insights highlighted the growing trend of electrification as a significant area of growth in the coming years.

“A tough regulatory environment for traditional yachts and rising fuel prices will pave the way for the solid growth of electric yachts in the future,” the report reads. “Huge investments from various manufacturers and government support measures will accelerate the demand for electric yachts.”

Carinthia VII

Image for article titled The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

Originally constructed in 2002, the award-winning Carinthia VII was recently remodeled and reimagined specifically for private charters. The 319-foot ship spans six decks and can accommodate up to 12 guests in eight staterooms. Among the ship’s amenities are two bars, a fully equipped gym and an outdoor projection screen that allows for an “immersive cinematic experience like no other.” The cost of chartering the Carinthia VII is $1,525,700 during both the winter and summer seasons.

The Lady S yacht boasts a number of exciting water toys, including jet skis, water skis, wakeboards and kayaks for athletic guests on the 305-foot ship. For those who prefer more indoor-oriented activities, however, you can also catch a film on the ship’s IMAX Dolby cinema — the first of its kind on any yacht in the world. Accommodating 12 guests, in seven cabins, the cost of chartering the Lady S begins at $1,743,328 a week.

The interior of the Ahpo yacht seems more reminiscent of a luxury hotel than a simple ship. Accommodating 16 guests and 36 crew members, the vessel features a full-size gym, a winter garden and a spa complete with a Himalayan salt sauna. The 378-foot long yacht was first manufactured in 2021 by the German shipyard Lürssen. Excited sailors can charter the Ahpo from superyacht broker Edmiston, beginning at $2,833,376 a week.

500EXP Para Bellum

Image for article titled The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

This 154-foot-long yacht can accommodate up to 12 travelers in its six cabins, along with up to 10 crew members. The ship was specially designed to enable “guests a 360-degree experience and relationship with the sea” through its unique stern and sundeck that allow travelers to safely stand “almost at sea level,” according to its Italian manufacturer San Lorenzo . Interested travelers can rent the ship for $359,609 a week.

The Renaissance

Image for article titled The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

The Renaissance lives up to its grandiose name by going beyond traditional private yachts and bridging the gap between a personal vehicle and a full-on cruise ship. How to Charter a Boat

If you want to sail off into the sunset, at least temporarily, you need to understand how to get aboard first.

An illustration of the bow of a boat with three women with flowing hair and cocktails looking over a man playing a guitar and then off in the water, four other vacationers are sunbathing on inner tubes.

By Lauren Sloss

This time of year, it’s an inevitable thought: Life would be that much better out on the water. Specifically, on a boat.

Even if you have neither a boat nor boating experience, it’s never been easier to make your nautical dreams come true — whether you want a day trip on your local lake or a fully staffed multiday voyage in a far-flung locale. Here are the initial questions that will help you plan an adventure on the water.

Whom are you traveling with?

Thinking about the size and dynamic of your group is an important first step, even if you are simply going on a day trip. Will children be on board? How old? What about elderly parents?

Dan Lockyer, the chief commercial officer of Dream Yacht Worldwide , strongly encourages travelers to determine group size — and, ideally, get people committed — before booking.

“The location that you want to go to, the time of year that you want to go, the type of boat that you want will entirely depend on the makeup of the group that you’re sailing with,” Mr. Lockyer said.

Do you want to captain, or do you want a captain?

Different charter companies specialize in certain locations, types of boats, itineraries and services. Some companies offer the opportunity for a “bareboat” charter, in which you rent the boat and take on the navigation and provisioning yourself, while others exclusively offer fully staffed options, including a captain and a cook.

If you want to captain the boat yourself, almost all outfits require some kind of proof of sailing or boating experience, often in line with local regulations.

Edward King, 45, an executive at a streaming company based in San Francisco, is experienced in sailing the city’s waterways. But on vacation, he said he would prefer to let a captain and crew take the lead.

Mr. King said he appreciates a captain who is familiar with both the local waters — “they’ll know how to avoid sailing into a certain sandbar,” he said, — as well as the local attractions.

In contrast, Matt Blake, 38, a software engineer based in Oakland, Calif., was eager to grow his sailing experience during a recent trip to La Paz, Mexico, with his fiancée. He hired a captain but made clear that the captain was there to help and teach.

Where do you want to go?

“Do you want something that’s more culturally oriented? Nature oriented? An adventure trip?” asked Mary Curry, the voyage product director of Adventure Life , which offers small group tours and private trips on land and on water around the world.

That answer can determine your destination. Popular cruising grounds include the Caribbean, Croatia, Alaska and French Polynesia, but the sky — or the sea — is really the limit. For help narrowing your focus, travel advisers often have relationships with charter companies or outfits around the world, and sailing publications offer recommendations.

Kyla Malkani, who has had experience with charters working as a destination wedding planner, recommends consulting the concierge of waterfront hotels, particularly for short-term or day rentals.

“A lot of times they will have either their own fleet or they will have some sort of connection at a dock,” said Ms. Malkani, 37, who is based in Washington, D.C., and is currently working as a content creator and freelance event planner.

What kind of boat?

Where you want to travel and for how long will likely determine the kinds of boats that are available to you. Crucial at this point, too, is an understanding of the boat’s layout and amenities.

“You definitely want to choose the right kind of boat,” said Ms. Malkani. “If you want more adventure, a sailboat is nice. If you’re looking for a luxury party environment, a yacht is best. And if you’re looking for something smooth, for older people or with kids, a catamaran is great.”

David Barclay is a luxury travel adviser who has also chartered boats for his own vacations.

“You want to match what the travelers want to what the boat offers,” he said.

Perhaps a group of friends might not mind a catamaran with functional but not luxurious marine bathrooms, but a multigenerational group might prefer more high-touch amenities.

When should I book?

Often, charter trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that require a great deal of advanced planning.

“You may have a specific place you want to go, or a specific time of year you want to travel,” said Mr. Barclay. “And some places just aren’t good at certain times of year.”

Naturally, you don’t want to be at sea in the Caribbean during hurricane season, or in the Mediterranean during winter storms. But you also might want to avoid peak cruising seasons, too.

The first three weeks of August are quite popular, said Mr. Lockyer. “If you have some flexibility and can travel in early July, you’ll get the same sort of great weather, a greater selection of boats and the anchorages won’t be as crowded.”

How much does it cost?

Charter costs are incredibly variable, dependent on all of the factors coming into play: your boat type and size, your destination, your group size, the amount of crew you’d like and the amenities on board. That said, costs could range anywhere from $2,000 for a day on a sailboat to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multiday mega-yacht charter. Have a budget in mind when beginning your research process.

What if I didn’t plan far in advance?

While advanced planning is encouraged, and often necessary for bigger boat trips, it’s possible to book a boat last-minute.

Boatsetter , an Airbnb-like platform for boats, is a good resource for last-minute bookings, especially for day trips, and even has an Instant Book option for down-to-the-wire bookings.

“If it’s for a special event, or around major holidays, you may want to book a month or two in advance. But for general bookings, you can find options within a week or two,” said Kim Koditek, Boatsetter’s head of brand strategy and communications, of the company’s overnight offerings, which appear on their platform under the luxury yacht charters category .

Ms. Malkani has used Boatsetter for some of her charters, most of which have been booked with a specific goal in mind.

“I’m a sunset chaser,” she said. “My husband and I just really love being on the water, and we always try to squeeze in some sort of boat day activity when we’re traveling.”

John F. Kennedy and his friends and family aboard Honey Fitz

The yacht’s name was changed four times, but JFK coined the enduring Honey Fitz . The moniker was reportedly inspired by his maternal grandfather John Francis Fitzgerald. Kennedy frequently went cruising on Honey Fitz with his family. Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis even redesigned the interiors in the early 1960s.

In 1971, the U.S. government sold Honey Fitz to a private owner. The vessel then fell into various states of repair and disrepair, until entrepreneur Charles R. Modica stubbled across it in 2020. He and his team decided to stop the nearly century-old cruiser from completely deteriorating and returned it to its former glory via an extensive, three-year restoration. Historical functioning parts from the 1930s, World War II, and the presidential eras from 1945 to 1971 can still be seen throughout the ship.

Honey Fitz Presidential Yacht

Honey Fitz offers the glitz and glamor befitting a world leader, too. The yacht, which can comfortably accommodate up to 35 guests, features a spacious main salon, a fully equipped galley, a plush stateroom, and a glorious sundeck. It is also outfitted with a state-of-the-art navigation system and the latest safety equipment.

The elegant wooden vessel is particularly suited to weddings, private parties, and corporate events, but nothing’s stopping you from taking it for a spin as a pretend president. Charter cruises depart from the Pelican Club.

How to Make a Ship in Minecraft

Petra Dolovski

The Seas and Oceans of Minecraft are vast and hold many secrets just waiting to be found. There’s nothing like hopping into your Minecraft Boat and venturing off into the waters in search of Wrecks and finding buried Treasures .

In many of the Ocean Biomes you have certainly come across some of the many Shipwrecks that can be found along Beaches or the bottom of the Ocean.

Anytime I find one I am inspired by the design and wonder how I could make a ship of my very own for a port back at my base or village.

So, let’s go over some ways to build a ship in Minecraft.

Building a Small River Ship

Of course a ship doesn’t need to be an enormous vessel meant to travel through the seven seas. If you have a port more inland you can also build a small River ship as well!

You will first need to find a wider River to fit your ship in or simply terraform a little bit.

To start off we will be choosing our materials. I personally chose to use the kind of Wood I saw near the River before building.

I firstly place down Slabs at the depth of how deep I want my ship’s hull to be, or how deep I can. If your River is more shallow it’ll be good to use Slabs half a block above the bottom so that way the ship still seems to float.

With the Slabs I make a line as long as I want my ship to be and I’ll be using this as the center of the ship. The key and challenge will be keeping both sides symmetrical.

I alternate between normal Wood Plank blocks and Stairs and Slabs to make the shape of the ship. A thing that may help is making a basic outline to see how the whole thing will curve and look.

Boat

You want it to be a smooth curve and not something rough, kind of like you would when building a barn or stable roof .

With the small hull done I use Slabs to build the deck. Using Fences of a different type of wood I circle around the deck so it’s not so easy to fall off and make a small sail in the center of the deck with White Banners for the cloth.

Boat 2

The rest is all a matter of your personal style and decoration.

Boat 3

Using a Boat to Build a Small Ship

If building a ship like that from scratch is too much work and too big for you there is a fun alternative you can do that utilizes the original Boat you can craft in the game.

These ships can also be considered larger boats and mostly utilize blocks like Slabs, Trap Doors, and of course, the Boat to build them.

You start off similarly as you do with a larger ship. You will want to make it at least 4 blocks long along with Stairs on the ends just to give the ship a general shape.

Tiny boat

A Boat takes up two total blocks and we will be using it here so that when the build is finished the paddles on the Boat seem to be coming out of the side of our ship. The two (or more) additional blocks we have left we can use to place down a Barrel, Chest, or Crafting Table for us to use.

The sides you can line either with Signs of your chosen wood material or Trap Doors. I chose the Trap Doors, because I prefer the way they look.

Finally, we will once again use Fences and Banners to make our sail. Holding the CTRL button when placing the Fence on the Crafting Table or Barrel will stop you from accessing it as you place it down.

Tiny Boat finish

I make the sail just 3 blocks tall and add an extra Fence to the side, before hanging the 3 Banners along the length of it for the sail.

Building a Large Ship

To build a large vessel fit for the seas we’re going to need a lot of space, compared to our previous designs.

For this I suggest finding a spot farther away from land, preferably in the Ocean, Deep Ocean or just an overall deep Sea biome. We don’t want the bottom of our ship to reach the bottom of the Water or the shore.

Like with our river ship I will start this one off by making the center and spine. I am using regular Wood Plank blocks, making the center 3 blocks thick in total.

When I have my length I proceed to make the skeleton on either side, similarly as I did before. This way I can figure out the shape and size I want for the ship.

Big Boat

Once I have that much done I follow the same steps of filling in the outline and top deck and removing the Water with Sponges that may be remaining inside the lower deck.

Now, since this ship is bigger it means we can fit a lot more, both inside and on top of it. The inside I reserve for my make-belief crew. I use a Ladder on a wooden beam to descend down into the lower deck and one side I use to build the sleeping quarters.

The opposite side will be a small kitchen along with some general storage for the items I have on the ship.

Boat inside

In some cases it is a tight squeeze for building, but it makes it feel cozy.

On the top deck I put down some Barrels and Fences, along with a pair of makeshift canons made with polished blackstone walls. I think wlackstone looks good for these builds.

On the back of the ship I build a small platform where the ship’s steering wheel would be. If you have a bigger ship you can even build a captain’s room here.

In the center of the upper deck I use Spruce Logs to build up the large sail of our ship. Using Stairs at the very top I build a crows nest.

Since Banners would be too small for this sail, I use White Wool blocks at the very top to make it seem like a closed sail. If you want an open sail you can do so using the same blocks.

Boat finish

Finally all that would be left are the details on the inside and outside.

For ships like these getting lighting down is important, so using Torches or Lanterns is crucial. If a Mob such as a Creeper spawns somewhere on the ship a single explosion could ruin all of your work and leave you stranded at Sea.

To combat this you can turn off Mob griefing or light up every part of your ship that you can.

The Best Minecraft Mods For Boats & Ships

Extra Boats Mod for Minecraft

There’s nothing like a life on the ocean waves – where you have nothing but the sea and the wind to guide you, and the blue horizon as your destination.

Sadly, outside of your basic vanilla boats, there’s not a lot of choice in how you get onto those waves in Minecraft.

And there’s not a lot to see once you’re out there, either!

So it’s no wonder there’s so many great mods dedicated to making life more exciting for Minecraft mariners around the world.

If you’re looking to indulge in the romance of the seas, we’ve got a bunch of great mods worth checking out.

7. Extra Boats

Extra Boats Mod for Minecraft

Check Out This Mod

Vanilla Minecraft boats are great, but they could be better.

There’s no storage, they have limited capacity, and they don’t even go that fast.

Here’s a mod to help with all that.

Extra Boats adds three new boat varieties for the discerning boat user:

The Boat with Chest – a boat that features onboard storage space, and can only be ridden by one entity at a time.

The Boat with Furnace – a one-entity boat that can be fueled with coal or charcoal for increased speed.

And the Large Boat – a high-capacity vessel offering space for four entities, that moves slightly slower than a standard boat.

If you’re looking to bring stuff into your nautical adventures, be sure to try this one out.

The mod also lets you add banners to your boat as a decorative sail, adding a new level of customization to an already customizable game.

Islands Mod for Minecraft

“Islands” is a simple mod that adds a new world generation type.

More specifically, it features oceans filled with islands of various sizes!

Although not directly boat-related, this mod is an ideal counterpart to any of the more standard boat mods on this list – since the last thing you want after investing in your new boat is to keep bumping into land!

The mod still preserves the variety of vanilla Minecraft’s biomes.

But with every island separated by boundless seas, you’ll need to sail more often to find more elusive resources.

5. Just a Raft

Just a Raft Mod for Minecraft

Big fancy ships are great and all.

But what if you’re looking to roleplay as a castaway on a distant island?

What if you prefer the sleek aesthetic that only a few bits of wood bound together into a floating object can provide?

What if you want… Just a Raft?

As the name suggests, this mod adds six basic rafts to Minecraft (one for each vanilla wood type).

All of these can be easily crafted by combining three logs with some string.

So whether you’re looking to follow in the footsteps of Tom Hanks in Cast Away, or if you just really hate having sides on your boat, Just A Raft has you covered.

4. Pirates Mod

Pirates Mod for Minecraft

Pirates – probably one of the most straightforward mod titles I’ve ever come across.

It’s a mod hat adds pirates and ghost pirates into the game, as well as a selection of pirate-themed items.

While regular pirates can be found at any time aboard their pirate vessels, ghost pirates exclusively come out at night aboard their semi-transparent ghost ships.

Both types are not to be crossed lightly, and you’ll have to fight fiercely if you want their treasure!

Items added to the block here include ship components such as wooden rails, climbable ratlines (rigging), useable cannons, ship bells and custom telescopes, along with barrels of rum and a boat sling – which can haul row boats out of the water for easy boarding.

And this mod is also compatible with Davinci’s Vessels , offering exciting new ways to kit out your own new vessel.

3. Small Ships

Small Ships Mod for Minecraft

Despite the name, Small Ships is a mod with big ambitions.

This adds seven craftable, portable vessels from across the Age of Sail.

This ranges from a two-person rowboat, which offers a more elegant alternative to the standard Minecraft boat, all the way up to the 16-entity War Galley.

And you’ll also get ships like the Cog, regular Galley, Drakkar, Brig, and Dhow.

The addition of an enormous 22-entity, three-masted Barque is also planned for future editions of the mod (as of this writing).

Plus this allows players a degree of customization as well, with ships now able to fly custom banners as flags.

All ships are craftable for all vanilla wood types, and Small Ships also offers support for wood types added by other mods: specifically Biomes o Plenty , Environmental and Lord of the Rings Mod: Renewed .

2. Pirates & Looters Mod

Pirates & Looters Mod for Minecraft

Ahoy ye scurvy dogs.

Ye didn’t think that going to sea in Minecraft was going to be all sunshine and sailing, did ye?

Sure you’ve got your fancy new ship lying around the shoreline. But with this mod installed, you’ll now have to battle against the worst the ocean has to offer!

Pirates & Looters adds new structures to Minecraft’s oceans, including pirate ships and desert islands, populated by new and aggressive kinds of villager and skeleton mobs.

Among these new additions are the Castaway, Pirate Gunner, and Skeleton Bomber types, as well as the dreaded Captain Agmair: a pirate lord with a whopping 250 health who deals 19 damage per hit .

We might need some combat mods to help out here…

But Pirates & Looters also adds a terrifying Kraken creature. This is an enormous tentacled boss that spawns only during ocean storms.

1. Davinci’s Vessels

Davinci’s Vessels Mod for Minecraft

Have you ever created a large static ship in Minecraft, and wished you could actually sail it around?

With Davinci’s Vessels, you can!

This mod lets you to turn static block structures into actual rideable entities .

It’s worth noting that this mod is actually the spiritual successor to the legendary Archimedes’ Ships mod .

But it adds a new Helm block which, by default, can turn any static block-based ship into a true controllable vessel.

You can easily steer it using the w-a-s-d keys.

And this mod also adds balloon blocks, which allow you to turn your regular ocean-going ship into a proper airship! Assuming you ever get tired of sailing the Minecraft seas, of course.

A player fighting a breeze in the trial chambers.

The Chamber of Secrets

The development trials behind Minecraft’s latest structure

Narrow, maze-like corridors. Carefully laid traps hidden from sight. A hostile environment crawling with never-ending waves of enemies. Trial chambers? What, no, I’m talking about the Mojang Studios office. But I bet you want to hear about the former? Fiiiiine !

Trial chambers came with the Tricky Trials Update and are a new type of structure hidden deep below ground in the Overworld. Built from mostly copper blocks and tuff bricks – and filled with mobs that want nothing but to end your adventure – they’re a fusion of new and old structures, design, and gameplay styles. Since you, dear reader, are a fanatical consumer of everything Minecraft.net, you already know we’ve talked about trial chambers in great detail; from what type of snacks to bring , to what armor you could wear.

But something we haven’t talked about is all the work that went into designing this challenging structure. Where do you even start when you want to craft a place meant to give players opportunities to find creative solutions to overcome a variety of combat scenarios? Apparently, with the past.

A screenshot of the atrium inside a trial chamber.

”The Atrium“, a late addition to the trial chambers, was created to offer more points of interest in the corridors, while also giving a bit of a breather from tight corridors.

"We first recorded and measured the metrics for every hostile mob in Minecraft, such as their attack range, movement speed, and health,” says Matthew “Moesh” Dryden , Structure Designer and heartless architect of the trial chamber. “From there, we studied all of our existing structures and terrain generation, partially different cave generations.”

The reason? A fancy excuse to play Minecraft during work hours To incorporate all the learnings into the trial chamber and create an interesting experience that challenges the player in both combat and puzzle-solving.

That meant looking at old structures like the bastion remnant, ancient city, stronghold, woodland mansion, and the ocean monument. Who knows, maybe even the Mojang Studios office itself? We have a pretty cool spiral staircase that would make an excellent challenge! At least for your legs.

A screenshot of the eruption room found in a trial chamber.

”’Eruption’ was the very first room we completed, back when we focused on creating an area the breeze could thrive in. By utilizing a layout that favors how water flows, we flood the room with a single water bucket!” – Moesh

Instead of designing the trial chamber for a specific playstyle, Moesh and team aimed for what they call “opportunities for mobs to succeed”. By using columns and uneven terrain, mobs are encouraged to split up and surround the player, creating a more dynamic and challenging encounter. The design also includes U-turns and corners to allow mobs to potentially reroute and escape the player's sight.

Another goal was to ensure that encounters worked with multiple group sizes and that players could tackle a trial chamber either by themselves or together with friends.

“We also looked at the scale of the trial chambers,” Moesh continues, “Particularly horizontal spacing, which was designed around the capabilities of both the player and the mobs.”

A screenshot of a corridor inside a trial chamber.

”We knew the player would be returning to this area as they travelled from chamber to chamber. By raising the ceiling height to include three floors, we are able to pack more encounters and other surprises into a tight space.” – Moesh

Designing content for mobs? What’s next, do the blocks have a say in it as well? Actually, in a way! The team created a general theory of difficulty based on the formula “stress plus time”. For example, a two-block wide jump can be very difficult for average players in a high-stress situation, but trivial when they have the time to prepare. The developers also measured the time to “block climb” walls and mine through blocks. Moesh elaborates:

“We paired this with the movement speed of mobs to create a general idea of what the smallest game loops of fighting and surviving could look like. This all sounds so specific and meticulous. It is. However, it is part of the preparations of engaging with multiple complex systems across Minecraft. The hope is that the work behind these decisions is invisible and instead supports the gameplay features we place there.”

A screenshot showcasing different types of elevation in a trial chamber.

“Chamber_8” was one of the first prototypes we tried out. Skeletons have the ability to cause some infighting amongst mobs, allowing the player to create a unique solution... if they’re clever enough.” – Moesh

The result is not only a structure with a philosophy, but a collection of rooms that each offer unique challenges that the player can take on in their own creative ways. Rooms like the arena-esque eruption trap room, the chilly powder snow room, or the cleverly crafted chamber corridors, are just some examples of what awaits visitors.

“The powdered snow trap is something I’m particularly proud of. While it is not a particularly deadly trap, it can cause some players to panic. See, the trick is that players cannot jump out of powdered snow – they must break the snow to regain the ability to jump. This is where things start getting devious.”

A screenshot of a powder snow room inside a trial chamber.

“Knowledge traps are a useful tool for open world/sandbox games. Even if you know how to defeat it, it is a constant presence that needs additional consideration while you fight.” – Moesh

Sharing development secrets here on Minecraft.net? Ludicrous! Luckily, there are even more secrets in the trial chambers; plenty of which we won’t spoil here.

“As part of this collaboration process, I asked the folks I worked with to include a secret,” says Moesh. “While most of the trial chambers are built with rather strict build guidelines, these secrets were our chance to break the norm and create a unique space which deepens the mystery of the structure. The secrets which may exist are varied, small, but meaningful additions that represent the collaboration necessary to create something of this scale."

There’s only one way find out (and no, it’s not to “google trial chamber secrets”) – dare to venture into your own local trial chamber and experience Tricky Trials firsthand with your own blocky eyes . If you’ve made it this far into the article, you should be more than equipped to handle whatever might be thrown at you. Me? I’m off to see if there’s any secrets hidden at the studio !

Minecraft ore distribution after 1.21 update: Best levels for Diamonds

Image of Matt Porter

If you want to progress in Minecraft , you’re going to need to mine for ore. While you can do this without knowing where to find important resources like Diamonds or Iron, it’s going to be slow. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to Minecraft ‘s ore distribution after the 1.21 update.

For some, diving into caves and searching like a true explorer is the best way to play Minecraft . I’m not here to tell you how to play though, so if you’re all about speed and want to be as efficient as possible, then you need to maximize your mining time with our guide to ore distribution.

Minecraft Overworld ore distribution

Below, we’ve put together a list of all the ore you can find in the Overworld, including the range where they spawn, the layers they’re found most often in, and where you’ll struggle to find any.

Coal0 to 32044, 95, 136-64 to -1AnyCommon
Copper-16 to 11248-64 to -17, 113 to 320Dripstone CavesCommon
Iron-64 to 32015, 23273 to 79AnyCommon
Gold-64 to 32-1633 to 320BadlandsRare
Lapis Lazuli-64 to 64-165 to 320AnyUncommon
Redstone-64 to 16-5915 to 320AnyUncommon
Diamonds-64 to 16-5916 to 320AnyRare
Emeralds-16 to 320236-64 to -17Mountains, Windswept HillsUncommon

This table should help you maximize your mining team, giving you the best chance of finding the resources you need.

Minecraft Nether ore distribution

Of course, the Nether realm has its own ore too, which you can find below.

Nether Quartz10 to 114128 and aboveAnyCommon
Nether Gold15 to 95117 and aboveAnyCommon
Ancient Debris13 to 23120 and aboveAnyRare

How does ore distribution work in Minecraft ?

Trying to picture how ore distribution works can be tricky, but Reddit user Bazoqa created the perfect graph that explains what it looks like.

Essentially, ore distribution works like a triangle that has been tilted on its side. The top and bottom points are where the least amount of the resources are, while the middle point is where the highest concentration of ore will be.

  • Mads stood out on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 4 with her adventurous personality.
  • Mads, a yachtie, loves to work by the water and document her travels on Instagram.

Mads Herrera has continued seeking adventure after Below Deck Sailing Yacht . The Below Deck spin-off premiered in 2020, offering a fresh extension to the show’s classic format . Below Deck Sailing Yacht follows the crew and its captain, Glenn Shephard. With four seasons under its belt, the series has introduced many franchise yachties throughout its tenure. Mads debuted on the show during Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 where she worked as a stew underneath Daisy Kelliher, the chief Stew . Daisy was a beloved crew member, but Mads was the breakout star of the season.

Mads had an adventurous personality that helped her stand out among the Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 cast. As a freshman Below Deck yachtie, she made her mark on the series and had fun while doing so. She was involved in an infamous boatmance with Gary King that occupied most of the drama throughout the charter season. Nonetheless, Mads kept things casual with the Bosun , which allowed her to enjoy her time during the charter season. Since appearing on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, Mads has continued living her life to the fullest.

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Mads Still Seems To Work In Yachting

Mads loves to work by the water.

Since her stint on the Below Deck franchise, Mads is seemingly still working in the yachting industry . During Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, she joined the crew as a stew with minimal experience. Mads grew up close to the water and had worked in parallel industries to yachting before she became a stew herself. Her Instagram hints that she’s continued working in roles that keep her by the ocean. Mads posted a video on a yacht in Croatia while tagging @theyachtweek in the caption while enjoying time with her friends.

Mads Loves To Travel

Mads’ instagram documents memories from her adventures.

The Below Deck Sailing Yacht stew enjoys traveling.

Since her season wrapped, the South Florida native has traveled around the world.

On her Instagram, Mads shares content from her adventures in various locations. In one post, the yachtie smiled for the camera in a stewardess outfit while yachting along the coastline of France .

Mads's Journey On Below Deck Sailing Yacht

Mads found herself in a boatmance.

Mads’ brought new energy to the cast of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4. She had two years of experience working in yachting before previously working on boat deliveries and day charters. She had to put her skills to the test as Daisy’s third stew on the yachting series. Mads learned a lot throughout the season, though her time on the show was overshadowed by her boatmance with Gary. She started casually hooking up with the Bosun and didn’t have any expectations for their relationship. Things got complicated when Gary and Daisy revealed they previously hooked up.

“I sensed that they slept together, but if I knew to the extent of the drama and stuff that was involved in whatever throuple relationship they have, I don’t want to be involved in that.”

Before Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, the Bosun and Chief Stew admitted they had been intimate. Daisy decided to tell engineer Colin MacRae, whom she developed feelings for. Mads eventually found out about their past and wasn’t upset about the news. While she stayed out of most drama, Daisy, Colin, and Gary had a complicated love triangle for the rest of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4. After the season, she told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live that she wishes she would’ve known, so she could’ve explored her connection with deckhand Alex Propson.

Will Mads Ever Return To Below Deck Sailing Yacht?

Mads should return for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5. The stew hasn’t clarified if she’d be open to returning to the franchise, but she’d likely accept the offer. The Below Deck audience had a positive reception to Mads in her debut season. She brought fresh energy to the show and enjoyed having a good time. Despite not having extended yachting experience, Mads grew in her role as a stew throughout the charter season. She was involved in drama throughout the season in her boatmance with Gary, though she didn’t overthink their situation.

Nowadays, Mads is enjoying her life post- Below Deck . She continued traveling and staying close to the water. While it’s unclear if she’ll return for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, the franchise would be silly not to ask her back for another season.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Peacock.

Minecraft’s Tricky Trials chambers are just the right amount of tricky

Minecraft is, very often, just a nice place to potter about in . But its call to adventure rings loudly in my square ears, and now that the Tricky Trials update has dotted the underground with action-heavy, loot-filled Trial Chambers, I’m simply powerless to resist.

I love almost everything about these, including how much of a fit they are conceptually. Minecraft’s strength as a survival game has always been how it turns the gathering of its rarer rewards into a mini-adventure in itself: I was never fussed to craft a shotgun in Nightingale because the shopping list of prerequisite unlocks and schematics looked like several evenings of tedium. But a diamond sword here in ol' MC? Conquer a cave, slay the monsters within, wrench the gems from the earth and it’s yours – as is the good time you had in the process.

Trial Chambers, while more keenly focused on battling, concentrates that search-fight-loot loop into specific locations, while adding traps and a lock 'n' key system to keep them feeling new and distinct. The result is that on challenge and scope, these chambers occupy a middle ground between everyday resource-gathering missions and much more dangerous Woodland Mansion or Ocean Monument raids, delivering a perfectly measured dosage of adventuring fun without demanding hours of tooling-up prep work.

Fighting two armoured zombies in an Ominous Trial Chamber, in Minecraft.

For one thing, tracking down Trial Chambers actually does start with the same process as a Woodland Mansion quest – by plying a cartographer villager with several hundred of sheets of paper until he agrees to sell you a map – but the nearest one is only ever a few minutes' walk away. There’s no four-day trek across tens of thousands of blocks just to arrive at the door. Even so, there’s still a satisfying "Aha, found ya" moment when your pickaxe meets the metal wall, like their discovery is a prize in itself.

The real goods, of course, are kept inside locked vaults, adorned with Warhammer 40K-grade skulls and only openable with keys that drop from various indestructible mob spawners. Herein lies the 'trial' part: only by exhausting each spawner’s supply of mobs will it drop a key, and the chamber has absolutely no qualms with pumping out enemies from several at once.

Combat in Minecraft is rarely this chaotic, partly because the chambers themselves are lousy with pitfall traps and peppered with buttons that will flood the room (or blast out a fireball) as readily as they’ll flick on a lamp. It’s a properly perilous arena, and becomes even more disorderly when the new Breeze mob spawns in. These jumpy little rascals might not dish out much damage, but their airblast attacks can and will send you flying off ledges or into skeleton arrows, while setting off the chamber’s traps mid-duel.

Fighting a Breeze in one of Minecraft's Trial Chambers.

They’re bastards, clearly, but the potential for slapstick makes fighting Breezes a right laugh. They, and Trial Chambers in general, present a level of combat challenge that to me feels juuuust right – there’s nothing as oppressive as the wall-ignoring, HP-devouring fairy things that can quickly end a mansion run, but you can’t brainlessly charge down mobs without being surrounded and chipped to death. Likewise, I wouldn’t take on a chamber with gear made of nothing but snapped trees, but basic iron weapons and armour will do the job, making the whole endeavour easier to tackle early on.

For the ideal Trial Chamber experience, however, I wholeheatedly recommend making it Ominous. Entering a chamber with the Bad Omen status effect will upgrade all the spawners to Ominous variants, toughening up the baddies in exchange for the chance of an Ominous key that unlocks even better rewards. Brilliantly, it also fills the chamber with yet more magical hazards, flinging potion bottles at you from nowhere and dropping arrows on your head if you camp a spot for too long. Standard Trial Chambers can get pretty dicey but my first Ominous chamber was the most fun I’ve had with Minecraft’s combat in years, despite eventually falling to an undead child riding a chicken.

Approaching an Ominous Vault with its key in Minecraft.

The loot’s decent too, though if have a grumble about Trial Chambers, it’s that the lockbox mechanics really play up how you’re effectively playing a moneyless gacha. In truth, I was crossing all ten fingers that those Ominous vaults would pop out the components for a mace – another Tricky Trials addition – so my inaugural Ominous raid ended on a disappointing note when it merely coughed up a few emeralds and some poison arrows. Rigged, says I. Granted, that was alongside all the other rarities I’d picked up from other vaults and smashed urns, but the odds of nabbing specific prizes aren’t great. Minecraft’s wiki suggests the part I need only has a 7.5% spawn chance with every pull – sorry, vault – and there sure as sugar ain’t a pity system .

I guess you could call that motivation to keep hunting new chambers, but I was going to do that anyway, because beating up skeletons while a dungeon detonates around you is a hoot. Just need to knock up a few hundred more sheets of paper, and the adventure begins anew.
