New IMOCA for The Ocean Race and the Vendée Globe touches the water for the first time in Lorient, France

Back on the water - Boris Herrmann’s offshore sailing team launched their new race yacht as scheduled on 19 July, after 18 months of innovative design and construction. With its spoon bow and chistera-shaped foils, the Malizia - Seaexplorer and the international team are ready to race again, both in single-handed and crewed regattas around the world, whilst continuing their mission of raising awareness for climate protection.
35,000 design hours, 45,000 man hours in the build, over 250 people involved in and outside the team. This is what it took to build Team Malizia’s new IMOCA race yacht, Malizia - Seaexplorer, which was launched on 19 July 2022 in Lorient, France. “The team is extremely proud of having launched the boat on the foreseen date. I believe it is a first in our industry to announce a date a year before and deliver exactly on time”, comments team skipper Boris Herrmann. “We put tremendous management and team effort to make this happen.”
With its new red 4,5 m long keel and chistera-shaped foils attached, the Malizia - Seaexplorer was rolled out of the hangar by the team and craned into the harbour of Lorient this Tuesday morning under the excited eyes of a large number of spectators. Once the 18.28 m long hull touched the water, the technical team started to install the IMOCA's 27.30 m long mast and its two outriggers.

On seeing the boat touch the water for the first time at Boris Herrmann commented “It is incredible to see all the hard work that the team have put in over this last year paying off - so a big thank you to all of them and also to our partners for making this dream a reality. I cannot wait to get back on the water and sail on this amazing machine!”
Amongst the crowd were those who have put hundreds of hours into building and designing the boat. Joining them were some of those who have been backing the team for years, such as team founder Pierre Casiraghi, Vice President of the Yacht Club de Monaco, Otto Schacht, Executive Vice President Sea Logistics at Kuehne+Nagel, Veit Enders, Managing Director of SCHÜTZ - memorialising this magic moment.
Unlike many other IMOCA teams, the Malizia - Seaexplorer yacht is not a billboard for a single brand but carries the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals wheel and the team’s slogan “A Race We Must Win - Climate Action Now”, with the aim of creating awareness and inspiring ambitious climate action. Team Malizia and its seven main partners EFG International, Zurich Group Germany, Kuehne+Nagel, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, Hapag-Lloyd AG, SCHÜTZ, and the Yacht Club de Monaco are united through this common mission.
Designed by VPLP, the construction of Malizia - Seaexplorer was carried out at Multiplast in Vannes, France, over the past 12 months. The technology and craftsmanship that went into building this boat are some of the most advanced in the field of engineering. “Learning from our experience in the past 4 years and in particular the Vendée Globe 2020-21, we wanted a boat that can maintain high average speeds even in rough sea conditions. Therefore, together with the architects from VPLP, we chose softer and rounder hull lines and a curved bow. We also made the boat even more solid than the previous one and completely redesigned the ergonomy and living space”, explains skipper Boris Herrmann.
Many essential technical suppliers were involved in the process: SCHÜTZ which provided the deck mould and lightweight honeycomb material used in the construction, Gurit, Greenboats, Solbian, Pixel Sur Mer, Avel Robotics, Marlow, B&G, Awentech, and more.
The Future of Team Malizia
Boris Herrmann will participate in the Route du Rhum this November, the first real test of the new boat across the Atlantic from Saint-Malo to Guadeloupe, and his first single-handed regatta since the Vendée Globe. During The Ocean Race 2022-23, he will sail on Malizia - Seaexplorer with co-skippers Will Harris, Rosalin Kuiper, and onboard reporter Antoine Auriol. This 6-month round the world team challenge starts mid-January from Alicante and will be another test of the new boat, this time in the rough conditions of the Southern Ocean - with the ultimate goal of the Vendée Globe 2024-25 in sight.
With the Ocean Pack, a mini-laboratory installed on the team’s previous boat and now also on their new boat, Team Malizia will continue to collect ocean data such as sea surface CO2 levels both during races and deliveries. This valuable data, which is scarce in remote places like the Southern Ocean, helps marine scientists understand and monitor the health of the oceans.
The boat, which sails under the Monaco flag carries the new sail number 1297, representing the year Francesco Grimaldi conquered the Rock of Monaco. The boat will be christened during the Malizia Ocean Festival on 6 & 7 September 2022 in her home port Hamburg, where skipper Boris Herrmann lives and Team Malizia is based.

MALIZIA – SEAEXPLORER
The new “MALIZIA – SEAEXPLORER”, with which Boris Herrmann will be competing in races in the next years, incorporates data and insight gleaned from the previous model and applies them in a new design. As the Official Technical Partner we are proud to have contributed our decades of expertise to the design and construction of this racing yacht. For example, we were responsible for the production of the entire deck mould, and our expertise and engineering services also flowed into the further development and construction of the foils, which give the boat its incredible speed. Key structural parts were also made from our CORMASTER ® material, which we provided to the shipyard as the official supplier. The new boat is in the direct tradition of our own successful “CONTAINER” racing yachts. Thanks to the modern sandwich construction of the hull, the yacht can withstand the extreme forces and weather conditions out on the ocean during circumnavigation, despite its low weight. The yacht is equipped with solar panels and mobile hydro generators which provide energy on board.
HIGH PERFORMANCE YACHT WITH CORMASTER ®
The foils develop an upward force of fifty to sixty kN and can lift almost the entire hull out of the water, thus reducing frictional resistance with the water to a minimum. Top speeds of more than 30 knots can already be achieved at 25 knots wind speed, making the boat one of the fastest in its class.

Luxury Charter Yacht MALIZIA was built in 1989 by Perini Navi and hosts up to 7 guests, cared for by 3 crew members. This impeccable Perini Navi originally built for Prince Rainer III of Monaco , is particularly luxurious and comfortable owing to her last refit in Winter 2021/2022.
Like all Perini Navi yachts, MALIZIA has a beauty that blends perfectly with the lines of a comfortable yet high performing vessel. With its Kevlar hull, MALIZIA can reach good speeds under sail and under motor with a cruising speed of 8 knots and a maximum motor speed of 11 knots, thanks to its 400 hp CAT engine .
The aft walkway leads to the yacht’s large hemisphere steering wheel which dominates the wide stern. Towards the bow is the entrance to the spacious but protected cockpit, which is enclosed by an elliptical structure the height of the seat back. To the left of the cockpit sits a large table with a semicircular bench guaranteeing a pleasant space for al fresco breakfast, lunch and dinner. While on the move, the table can be lowered to the level of the seat which with its cushions and surrounding bulkhead, creates a comfortable sunbathing area totally protected from the wind.
The cockpit has a cover that protects guests from both sun and rain with the possibility to add side sliding protection from the wind. This ensures maximum enjoyment of this magnificent space even with cool evenings at the end of the summer season or days that are more windy.
The bow is very wide and MALIZIA is equipped with movable cushions on the deck while at the far end lies a teak tub in which water toys and the tender are stored during navigation.
From the cockpit, it is possible to access the lower deck areas and the main living area, past a dedicated space for the Captain to manage the navigation from his authoritative suede seat and all the necessary communication equipment. The interiors, designed by Michele Bonan , surround the large living area in a modern but classic style. The warm wood creates a soft and homely atmosphere, while the carpet, sky and the white seats give that touch of freshness and brightness, ideal for the lower deck of sailing yachts. The designer chairs, the marble-effect dining table, the coffee table and the paintings on the walls communicate a sense of majesty and care for the interior furnishings.
MALIZIA has an extensive list of water toys offering superior aquatic entertainment suitable for both the youngest and oldest guests. For indoor entertainment a retractable TV screen is available for movies, with access to a DVD player and Netflix and also enabling connection to personal devices.
The three cabins of MALIZIA in the stern and bow of the yacht are all ensuite, and can accommodate up to seven guests. Aft we find the m aster cabin on the port side with its large king size bed, decorated with tasteful cushions, light upholstery and every detail thought out to perfection. A beautiful wooden bathroom with marble sink, toilet and shower is accessible from inside the cabin. Symmetrically on the right side of the yacht, we find the VIP cabin , with a queen size bed and a bathroom matching the master cabin.
The guest cabin , located at the bow and the living area port side, offers a double bed and an additional single bunk bed. Although the bathroom of the guest cabin is slightly smaller it boasts exactly the same comfort and features as the aft cabins.
MALIZIA is served by its crew of three. Egon, the Captain, is a highly experienced and skilled sailor as well as a professional diver. The hostess is the crew member who pampers guests from the first coffee in the morning to the herbal tea or cockails in the evening, while MALIZIA ’s highly skilled chef delights guests’ palates with delicious gourmet meals.

Kiteoptics has been producing binoculars with optical image stabilisation since 2021. However, the Belgian manufacturer was previously only known in the outdoor sector and among birdwatchers. With the APC 14x50 and the APC18x50, two models with particularly fast 50-millimetre optics are now coming onto the market. Kiteoptics relies on movable and compact roof prisms for stabilisation, which are designed to compensate for an angle range of two degrees. According to the manufacturer, the advanced mechatronics and new software ensure that the image stabilisation works extremely quickly and that no distortions occur during fast panning. Depending on the version, the lenses are powered by two AA batteries or lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, which should enable 38 hours of continuous operation. This should be enough for several seasons of everyday use. From 650 euros.
 The Technostabi range comprises three models with 40 and 28 millimetre lens diameters and 12x to 16x magnification. Depending on the model, the Technostabis can compensate for angles of four to six degrees. Prices start at around 500 euros.
 Most read articles The camera specialist Canon sells an extensive range of stabilised binoculars. The lens diameters range from 20 to 50 millimetres and the magnifications are between eight and 18 times. Prices start at 520 euros.
 Vallon has developed sunglasses together with the Malizia team. They are characterised by category three light protection and have a water and oil-repellent coating, a complete UV filter and are polarised. The frame is made from 85 per cent recycled fishing nets. Price: 135 euros.
 Decathlon calls its climate-friendly alternative to neoprene Yulex 100. The material is made entirely from FSC-certified natural rubber and is designed to reduce the carbon footprint of a suit by 43 per cent without compromising on comfort. Swimming costumes for children and shirts for adults are available at the start of production. Price: 19.99 euros
 With the Seatec splicing set, Bremen-based distributor SVB offers everything you need to process modern and conventional cordage. In addition to the tried and tested splicing wires from D-Splicer, the set also includes fids, a ceramic knife and special micro-serrated cordage scissors. A sailmaker's glove, sewing needles, tape and rigging twine round off the set. A splicing manual from Gleistein is also included. The set costs just under 200 euros, which is around ten per cent cheaper than the sum of the individual items.

Bonnie’s taking some rest time before beginning more medical procedures in Ireland. “She’s pretty tired and gets worn out easily and is still in a lot of pain and getting used to being numb and having nerve damage. She also had 5% of her lung removed so getting used to that but overall we are so aware of how lucky she is and how much worse this could have been,” Daisy wrote as part of her lengthy caption. Once again, Daisy expressed thanks and gratitude to those who reached out during this time. Then, she gave insight into what’s ahead for Bonnie. “It will be a long year but she’s already made so much progress in six weeks,” she explained. The chief stew reiterated her message of safety when riding mopeds while traveling and having travel insurance. Daisy hopes to prevent other families from going through what she has since the accident. There’s been a GoFundMe set up for Bonnie, as Daisy shared the extensive surgeries and medical costs that have and will occur over the next year as Bonnie heals.
