  • Trivia A light comedy filmed on location in Rome, Ghosts, Italian Style (1967) was re-titled Ghosts - Italian Style for the American market, an attempt to cash in on a previous Sophia Loren success, Marriage Italian Style (1964) , for which the actress received a Best Actress Oscar® nomination. But the film, produced by Sophia's husband producer Carlo Ponti , quickly faded from view and, in all fairness, hadn't fared well in Italy either. It was just the beginning of a long and undistinguished phase for Loren marked by such lackluster films as Sunflower (1970) , The Priest's Wife (1970) , Lady Liberty (1971) and the box office disaster, Man of La Mancha (1972) , based on the smash Broadway musical.

Maria, unhappy with the life of poverty she leads with her husband, Pasquale, a luckless opera singer, seeks the help of Alfredo, the wealthy director of the orphanage in which she was raised. At the same time, the owner of a 17th-century Neapolitan palace invites Pasquale to live there rent free in the hope of dispelling rumors that the place is haunted. Without telling his wife of the ghost legend, Pasquale accepts the offer, while Alfredo, anxious to be near Maria, secretly moves into a palace room connected to the couple's apartment by a hidden staircase. After Pasquale has seen Alfredo and mistaken him for the ghost, he finds a bundle of money dropped by Alfredo and concludes that the ghost wants to help him. Hoping to turn the palace into a boardinghouse, Pasquale rents a room to a dim-witted prostitute, Sayonara. Unaware that Pasquale thinks the money was left by a ghost, Alfredo tells Maria that her husband has no objection to sharing her so long as he is well paid. Outraged, Maria makes plans to leave with Alfredo. Pasquale is enraged to discover the true source of his wealth, and Maria is shocked to discover that Pasquale was unaware of her relationship with Alfredo. She disappears, and Pasquale confesses to her murder; but, after 7 months imprisonment, he is acquitted on the grounds that his crime was motivated by honor. Returning to the palace, he finds Maria waiting. Alfredo, upon seeing what he believes to be the ghost of Maria, tearfully confesses that he was responsible for getting Pasquale fired from several jobs. Taking advantage of the situation, Maria extracts from Alfredo a large donation to her memory, and she makes him promise to marry the forlorn Sayonara. Fortified by their new wealth, Pasquale and Maria move to Scotland and take jobs as domestics for an eccentric lord who lives in a castle inhabited by a headless ghost.

Renato Castellani – Questi fantasmi AKA Ghosts – Italian Style (1967)

questi fantasmi loren

Plot: Questi fantasmi is based on what was a very popular play by Eduardo De Filippo. In fact, so popular that it was filmed three times during the ’50s and ’60s. The version uploaded here was the latter of these three adaptations, directed by Renato Castellani, and starring Vittorio Gassman and Sophia Loren in the principal parts of the married couple, who moves into a house that may or may not be haunted. Its “classic” pedigree notwithstanding, the film feels very much like a ’60s production, and it is not Castellani’s best work, even if the charming performances by Gassman and (especially) Loren manage to keep things interesting. Possibly best of all is the opening sequence depicting the moment the two fall in love on a rooftop. over a cup of coffee, so to speak.

The Science Fiction Horror and Fantasy Film Review

Ghosts - Italian Style (1967) poster

Ghosts – Italian Style (1967)

Rating: ★★, (questi fantasmi).

Italy/France. 1967.

Director – Renato Castellani, Screenplay – Renato Castellani, Adriano Baracco, Leo Benevenuti & Piero de Bernardi, Based on the Play Questi Fantasmi by Eduardo de Filippo, Producer – Carlo Ponti, Photography – Tonino Delli Colli, Music – Luis Enrique Bacalov, Special Effects – Tom Howard, Art Direction – Piero Poletto. Production Company – CC Champion/Les Films Concordia.

Sophia Loren (Maria Gennari), Vittorio Gassman (Pasquali Lacarno), Mario Adorf (Alfredo), Aldo Giuffre (Raphale Morales), Margaret Lee (Sayonara)

Maria Gennari marries opera singer Pasquali Lacarno but they are reduced to poverty when he is fired from his job. Pasquali then finds a 17th Century mansion being offered not only rent free but with the owner even offering to pay to move them in. However, once moved in, they find that the house is supposedly haunted by the ghosts of a 17th Century Duke and the nun he loved. Meanwhile, Maria’s old boyfriend Alfredo, a highly successful financier at an orphanage, comes trying to win her back. When Pasquali encounters Alfredo in the house, he thinks him the Duke’s ghost, which precipitates a farcical comedy of errors.

Ghosts – Italian Style is not terribly different from a horde of comedies made in the late thirties and forties, beginning with the Bob Hope The Cat and the Canary (1939), which played traditional haunted house cliches for laughs. The difference here is that Ghosts – Italian Style dispenses with most of the traditional cliches and becomes a comedy of errors with (until the very end) the supernatural elements played for clear corporeal slapstick.

On the level of its quick and snappy blunders of interpretation and plot twists, Ghosts – Italian Style makes for a film that is entertaining in a limited way. Unfortunately, it asks belief in some sweeping plot holes that is not easy – not the least of which is the contrived arrangement three-quarters of the way through about Sophia Loren going off to hide in mountain villages, leaving husband Vittorio Gassman to be arrested for murder.

A French-Italian co-production shot in English, Ghosts – Italian Style is also beset by a stiltedness of language. The beautiful Sophia Loren always manages to grace a film, no matter whether it is an inconsequential triviality like this or the endless soap operas she was cast at the height of her popularity in the 1960s. The ending where she parodies the ethereal wafflings of ghostly portents, balancing them with an eagerness to get Mario Adorf’s guilt money, is especially charming. Margaret Lee is not bad either in a largely irrelevant role as the English boarder-come-hooker. As to the menfolk, Vittorio Gassman and Mario Adorf who both play hapless, wet-eared wimps that seem identical clones, the less said the better.

The film is based on a popular play Questi Fantasmi! (1945), which translates as These Ghosts , by Italian writer Eduardo De Filippo. For the film’s English-language release, the play was retitled Ghosts – Italian Style copying the title of the popular Marcello Mastroianni comedy Divorce – Italian Style (1961). Indeed, doing so became so popular that there ended up being some 20 other films all suffixed Italian Style over the next decade. There were previous film versions of the Eduardo De Filippo play in 1954 or 1962, although little is known about these.

This was pretty disappointing with some solid actors. It looks fine enough but it plays like a bad "Three's company" script replete with sexual innuendos and farcical situations. Sophia Loren(Maria) is lovely as always and I do enjoy Vittorio Gassman(Pasquale) as an actor but this film felt hollow and uncharming. I hate to admit this but we don't even get ghosts until the very end when the story takes place elsewhere but it does give us a cute little cameo with Marcello Mastroianni. This movie just baffled and clung to a bare minimum story line. This thing was a specter of a vision that went through me and left me cold.

I know that her career was struggling in the late '60s, but I had no idea that Sophia Loren did a guest appearance on Scooby Doo .

“Nobody beats the carpets anymore in this house.”

The titular “ghosts” are actually just Mario Adorf, the former lover of Sofia Loren who is prowling around her crumbling mansion, trying to win his way back into her heart, but spooking her doofus husband in the process. I want to say there is something lost in translation here. There’s a reason so many of the commedia all'italiana films have never been given wide release in the United States. Something about the humor just doesn’t click. A couple jokes do, though, like the one the film ends on, where a headless specter wolf-whistles at Sofia Loren’s ass. Great asses—they transcend all cultural barriers and spiritual planes.

Maxvayne

Review by Maxvayne ★★★

Lightweight Comedy fare involving Vittorio Gassman and wife Sophia Loren, who move into a massive ancient villa for free due to the lack of tenets and a supposed curse. Then add in a love triangle involving Maria(Loren)'s obsessor, Mario Adorf, who is trying to split them apart. This was a good time, Vittorio Gassman is funny as the bumbling husband believing in ghosts - while sharing good screen chemistry with the always beautiful Loren. However the fun loses steam a little over an hour deep and the film takes an oddly emotional (and angering) turn, changing tone completely while leaving behind the lite-breezy comedy that came before for several confusing story turns in quick succession. Only does this come around…

Happy 89th birthday, Sophia Loren! I realize this film, released as Ghosts, Italian Style in English-speaking countries but as Questi Fantasmi (the title of the play it’s based on) in Italy, isn’t regarded as one of your best. On the contrary, along with A Countess From Hong Kong and More Than A Miracle (also 1967), it marks the point at which your 10-year run as a bankable international star ended and a less happy 10-year period of flailing creatively began, before you reinvented yourself as a character star in A Special Day (1977). Nevertheless, it’s always fun to spend an evening with you.

In this film, Loren marries feckless opera singer Vittorio Gassman over a cup of coffee. Literally! Like…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I watched this for the title. I stayed for Sophia Loren ♥️ The beginning when she’s describing the perfect way to make a cup of coffee is how I want mine made!

I love the tagline for this: “If you were a ghost in Sophia's house you wouldn't stay in the attic either”

A bit of a spoiler here because despite the title of the movie, there isn’t a ghost until after Sophia and Vittorio Gassman leave Italy. But that was ok for me because of all the drama with the palace Vittorio’s character finds… and rent free too… with some “peculiar advantages.” It almost reminded me of The Shining … almost.

There is some good comedy in this and then…

Pasquale (Vittorio Gassman), a down-on-his-luck opera singer, and his wife Maria (Sophia Loren) agree to live in a haunted mansion. Strange things happen.

That’s a hardy premise, used by everyone from James Whale in The Old Dark House (1932) to Hanna-Barbera in Scooby-Doo . Renato Castellani appropriated it for this very broad and energetic comedy from 1967. He was both the director and one of the screenwriters, adapting a 1946 play by Eduardo De Filippo. This was one of his last films.

There may or may not be ghosts in this villa in Naples. Most of them are imagined.

In fact, Maria is mostly fantasy too. Castellani and Loren do a fine comic sendup of Loren’s outsize presence in the male…

There are no ghosts in this movie and I am steamed . (Okay there is one and it’s an amazing cameo and made me very happy.)

There’s a fine line between a super naive character being funny and just being willfully dumb. Nobody asks any questions in a way that feels so unnatural and unfunny. I’m all for dumb humor but it needs to have a consistent logic to it, otherwise it’s just dumb . There’s an occasional funny one liner but it all gets so buried under the ridiculously convoluted plot set up. So much time is wasted on building up this dumb scenario about nuns and orphans when all of the fun stuff happens after the reveal. Er or well, after the whole Divorce Italian Style  plot turn done in earnest. Okay mainly only in the last ten minutes when Sophia gets to do some solid haunting.

Awful attempt at a farce. You know something is wrong when the highlight of the film is a headless Marcello Mastroianni gazing at Sophia Loren's ass.

This... is very much not the movie that I had expected it to be from the title and description. For a start, I expected ghosts to be a factor here. That said, there's an element to this comedy that almost feels a bit offbeat and over time that did rather grow on me; this certainly has some elements that take a little while to have a payoff from. It still feels a tad hit or miss, but I did find myself enjoying much of this simply because it takes some paths that I didn't expect it to go and so that kept this feeling surprisingly fresh.

The voluptuous Sophia Loren was among the most successful international stars of the postwar era; not only did she rise to fame as a sex symbol, but she also won a measure of critical acclaim rarely afforded most of her foreign-born contemporaries. Born Sofia Scicolone in Rome on September 20, 1934, she and her single mother lived in abject poverty in the war-torn slums of Naples. At the age of 14, she began entering area beauty contests, later becoming a model and appearing in a number of uncredited bit parts in films. After winning a beauty contest in Rome, Loren was signed to a film contract by producer Carlo Ponti, who began grooming her for stardom by recruiting drama coaches and casting her in small movie roles, including an appearance in the 1951 smash Anna, under the name "Sofia Lazzaro." For 1952's La Favorita, her first larger role, Ponti changed her name to Sophia Loren, and with the following year's La Tratta Delle Bianche, she earned third billing after Silvana Pampanini and Eleanora Rossi-Drago.

By the mid-'50s, Loren was a star in Italy as well as a major sex symbol, but with the exception of 1955's Attila Flagello di Dio, co-starring Anthony Quinn, few of her pictures were distributed internationally. That changed with Vittorio de Sica's L'Oro di Napoli, which was recut and dubbed for foreign sale, resulting in poor reviews. Loren, however, was singled out for the strength of her performance as a Neapolitan shopkeeper, surprising many critics who had dismissed her as merely another bombshell. As a result, 1955's La Donna del Fiume was distributed in both the U.S. and Britain, as were a number of other subsequent projects. Eventually, Loren emerged as an international star, and Ponti soon declared her ready for Hollywood. She moved tentatively into the English-language market with a pair of films shot in Europe, 1957's Boy on a Dolphin (in which she appeared opposite Alan Ladd) and The Pride and the Passion (starring Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant).

In 1957, Loren and Ponti were wed in Mexico. Their marriage was a national scandal in the predominantly Catholic Italy because Ponti had already been married once before. A series of legal complications ensued -- one prominent Italian Catholic magazine even instructed readers to boycott Loren's movies. In the meantime, Ponti orchestrated with Paramount a four-film contract for Loren's services, beginning with 1958's Desire Under the Elms. In Hollywood, her acting skills blossomed, and she won Best Actress honors at the 1959 Venice Film Festival for her work in Martin Ritt's drama The Black Orchid. However, she proved unable to draw audiences, a situation which her next film, George Cukor's idiosyncratic Western Heller in Pink Tights, failed to remedy. The 1960 romantic comedy It Started in Naples (with Clark Gable) was Loren's commercial breakthrough, but Paramount had lost faith in her star power and cut her loose. She next traveled to Britain to film Anthony Asquith's The Millionairess.

Upon returning to Italy, Loren reunited with de Sica in 1961's La Ciociara, a wartime drama in which she starred as a widowed mother caught in a love triangle with her teen daughter (Eleanora Brown) and Jean-Paul Belmondo. Climaxed by a brutal rape scene, the film won widespread acclaim, and Loren's gut-wrenching performance earned her an Academy Award, the first foreign-language performer to win the Best Actress prize. She was also so honored at the Cannes Film Festival. She next shot 1961's El Cid in Spain with Charlton Heston, followed by the de Sica episode of the anthology Boccaccio '70. On the strength of her Oscar win, she also returned to English-language fare with 1963's Five Miles to Midnight, followed a year later by The Fall of the Roman Empire. Again her success was minimal, and she went back to the relative comforts of the Italian film industry for Ieri, Oggi, Domani and Matrimonio all'Italiana, both directed by de Sica and both co-starring Marcello Mastroianni.

In 1965, Ponti signed a production deal with MGM; a small role for Loren in Operation Crossbow and a larger part in Lady L were the results, followed by a series of films which cast her variously as a Jewish wife (1966's Judith), an Arab mistress (1966's Arabesque), and a former Russian prostitute (A Countess From Hong Kong). None of these projects were well received, however, and after the failure of the fairy tale C'era una Volta and Questi Fantasmi, the Ponti/MGM deal ended unceremoniously. Despite her recent lack of success, Loren nevertheless remained a major talent, and in 1969 she even won a Golden Globe award as the world's most popular female star. Still, her popularity was not reflected by her box-office totals; projects like de Sica's 1970 picture I Girasoli and 1971's La Moglie del Prete performed well in Italy but played disastrously virtually everywhere else. Another return to Hollywood to appear in the musical The Man of La Mancha was also met with an icy reception.

Loren spent the majority of the mid-'70s exclusively in Italy, starring in de Sica's Il Viaggio and reuniting with Mastroianni in 1975's La Pupa del Gangster. When a dubbed version of 1977's Una Giornata Particolare found favor with American audiences, Hollywood again came calling, resulting in a pair of thrillers, 1978's The Brass Target and the next year's Firepower. Also in 1979, Loren penned her autobiography, Sophia -- Living and Loving: Her Own Story, and in 1980 played herself in a TV-movie based on the book. She did not reappear before the cameras for another four years, instead writing a beauty book and launching a perfume named in her honor. In the wake of 1984's Qualcosa di Biondo she appeared onscreen rarely, teaming with Mastroianni one last time in Robert Altman's 1994 film Ready to Wear (Pret-a-Porter) and making a successful return to Hollywood filmmaking with the 1996 hit comedy Grumpier Old Men. In 1997, she collaborated with director Roger Hanin on the docudrama Soleil, co-starring Phillippe Noiret. In honor of her lengthy career, Sophia Loren was also the recipient of a special Oscar in 1991. Though film roles were few and far between into the 2000s, Loren proved she still had movie star charisma with a role in Chicago director Rob Marshall's Nine -- a lavish tribute to all things Italian.

81st annual academy awards show

79th annual academy awards show
