Everything We Know About The 2023 Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II

With its updated interior and styling, the 2023 Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II redefines luxury to another level.

Rolls-Royce and luxury are the two words that go hand in hand. The company’s legacy ranges nearly a century of making some of the world's finest and most prestigious automobiles. In 1925 Sir Henry Royce introduced the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and it was instantly labeled as the greatest car in the world. The vehicle has seen over ten generations and has gotten more and more opulent with every single one of them. The use of plush interior elements, a massive engine that delivers top-notch power figures under the hood, and an endless list of customization make the Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II a truly desirable car.

The 2023 Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II still features customization and comes with a price tag capable of rivaling a mansion. This beauty offers a level of luxury unparalleled by any car on the planet and justifies its jaw-dropping price as it delivers luxury on every front.

2023 Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II Boldly Defines New Standards Of Excellence

For 2023, the Phantom has been given a light styling makeover, and the biggest of them happens to be the iconic Pantheon grille which is now illuminated . The headlamp's design also has been revised, and they look modern and in line with other Rolls-Royce models. Apart from this, Rolls-Royce offers updated wheels that now feature a much sleeker look. An exclusive offering will be a limited edition Phantom Platino model through its bespoke coachbuilding service. The Platino will have exclusive silver and white paint along with interior upholstery that is hand-stitched in silk and bamboo fiber-based cloth. Overall, it shall be offered in three broad trims, which will be the standard length, extended wheelbase, and the bespoke Platino, with prices starting around $460,000 for the entry-level trim and going way over $650,000 for the exclusive Platino trim .

A Finely Crafted Interior Of The 2023 Rolls-Royce Phantom

Since the Phantom is the flagship of Rolls-Royce, the interior of the exquisite vehicle is mainly made out of leather, wood, and fine metal accents. The Phantom has always been about being exclusive, and in the 2023 iteration, one can also get a custom artwork in place of the standard dash panel. Its long-wheelbase version offers an extra 8.6-inches of rear legroom, which allows the passenger to stretch out their legs even further. It has a wheelbase of 139.8 inches, and the overall width of the cabin happens to be 79.4-inches making it one of the largest sedans on the market. Rear-hinged suicide doors continue to be an everlasting attraction as they open wide, allowing effortless ingress and egress. Rear seat passengers are catered with every ounce of luxury as the Series II features power-adjustable seats that include a heating, ventilation, and massage function. There is also an inclusion of a refrigerator between the two seats and remote control to operate the automobile’s infotainment system. The system on the Rolls-Royce uses an operating system based on the latest generation of BMW's iDrive system, which works smoothly. The interior of the new Phantom is a fantastic place to be in, and the cabin is well insulated from the exterior noises to an extent wherein one could hear the ticking of its mechanical clock on the dash .

The Phantom Series II’s Uncompromized Power

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II might be all about luxury, but that does not mean that the automaker has compromised even one bit in terms of performance. Powered by a silky-smooth twin-turbo V12, the Phantom Series II boasts a power output of 563 HP. It uses an 8-speed automatic transmission with all the power to the rear wheels only. These numbers enhance the car’s appeal; however, as the Series II weighs around 5600 lbs, it does not offer the best power to weight ratio. Nevertheless, it can strike the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 5.1 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 155 mph. The Phantom is much suited to be a chauffeur-driven vehicle as it caters more towards comfort by offering an adaptive air suspension. The car also features a state-of-the-art pothole spotting camera that helps the suspension adapt to undulating road surfaces in real-time. To say that it has one of the smoothest rides in the industry would be an understatement.

Overall the 2023 Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II is a fantastic vehicle that quite literally floats down the road. Even the vehicle's powerful engine is so smooth that come claim can place a quarter on the hood rev the nuts out of it, and it won't fall. It has an uncompromized level of luxury and comfort and shall remain one of the best luxurious sedans on the market.

Home » TEST DRIVE: 2023 Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II—Forget the Chauffeur

It only takes driving about three and a half feet to realize that the Rolls-Royce Phantom is unlike every other car in existence. I’ve driven plenty of Rollers before but never a Phantom. And after barely a yard’s worth of driving I said out loud “Oh, I get it.” The Phantom is a completely unique experience, one that might not be for everybody, but it’s one that everyone should experience at least once in their life.

Phantom Series II

phantom series ii interior

For 2023, Rolls-Royce updated the Phantom but Rolls doesn’t use BMW-speak, so it isn’t called an LCI. Instead, it’s the Phantom Series II. Some of the updates from Series I to Series II include an illuminated Pantheon grille, new headlight bezels with laser-cut starlight patterns, and an updated art gallery dashboard.

In pictures, the Phantom isn’t an especially pretty car but, in person, it’s striking like nothing else on the road. There’s something about its sheer size and imposing proportions that immediately let you know it’s not like other cars. Everything about it, from the design, to the paint quality, to the materials, and even the way it sits on its wheels feels like it’s another league entirely from everything else.

The car I drove was especially stunning. Its breathtaking metallic green paint combined with black disc wheels was just the perfect spec. It looked elegant but also badass in a way that only a Rolls-Royce can.

Like Nothing Else in the World

phantom series ii interior

Once I set off, though, I realized that, despite its imposing looks and absurd levels of luxury, the Rolls-Royce Phantom isn’t a snobby car. The common trope is that Phantom owners don’t drive their cars, they have chauffeurs for that. However, the driver isn’t the chauffeur, the Phantom is. Even as the driver, the Phantom coddles you, it wraps you in warmth and comfort, turning the chore of driving into a luxurious pleasure. There’s an old expression among us automotive scribes, that good luxury cars make you feel more refreshed at the end of a long drive than you were when you started. That’s only actually true of one car—the Rolls-Royce Phantom.

phantom series ii interior

I drove the Phantom up the same canyon road that I drove everything else on in Palm Springs. Prior to the Phantom drive, I tested the BMW X1 , the X7 M60i, the 330e, and the 760i . In all of those cars, even the 760i, that mountain felt like work. Fun, often heart pounding work, but work nevertheless. In the Phantom, it felt so easy and effortless that it was like taking a break.

It’s genuinely hard to describe how smooth and supple the Phantom is over any sort of pavement. The only way I can accurately describe it is that it deletes bumps. You can see a bump in the road, watch the long, bow-like front end of the Phantom go over it, and it’s gone. It takes a bit for your brain to recalibrate because you’re expecting to feel the bump. But you don’t. Like it never existed in the first place.

Fun in an Odd Way

phantom series ii interior

The Rolls-Royce Phantom isn’t exactly fun to drive, in a traditional sense. Its steering ratio is incredibly slow, so it takes quite a bit of steering input to make things happen. But that’s by design. Twitchy steering inputs would be uncouth, especially for a chauffeur. So Rolls wants its driver to be deliberate and almost request some steering from the car. However, once you get into a groove, it’s actually shockingly accurate and easy to place.

Don’t think that because the Phantom is pillow soft that it’s a sloppy mess when you turn the steering wheel, though. It’s quite the opposite. Rolls’ air suspension keeps body movements in check, even when you’re driving in a manner that would upset the dignitary in the back. It also has rear-wheel steering, which makes it surprisingly nimble, despite being as long as a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and as heavy as one too.

So despite its slow steering and plush ride, you can get into a rhythm with the Phantom on a twisty road and it actually becomes rather fun. All the while, you’re insulated from any sort of outside noise, your hands and butt are free from bumps and vibration, and you’re ensconced in leather, wood, and metal. It’s fun but without any of the work of driving a sportier car.

Internal Combustion Turned Invisible

phantom series ii interior

Powering the Rolls-Royce Phantom is a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine and I honestly don’t care how much power it makes because it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter because the engine completely disappears once you start moving. I’ll admit it sounds kinda good on startup, from outside the car, but once you’re inside, there’s no physical or audible proof of its existence. Just effortless, buttery-smooth waves of instant torque. Almost like an electric car, just with more dead polar bears.

Thinking about it now, though, the Rolls-Royce Phantom should be electric. The next one will be and that’s good. After driving the Phantom I can say that its magnificently smooth engine is its only real weak spot. Not that it’s bad—it’s a brilliant piece of engineering—it just blends into the background and you never notice it. So why not have an electric motor that’s even quieter and has more torque?

Stunning Interior

phantom series ii interior

Slipping into the Phantom is special. Every surface, every switch, every touchpoint is made from the highest quality materials and built to an a unbelievable standard. My car’s interior spec wasn’t anything special by Rolls’ standard, especially when compared to the breathtaking green paint and black wheels, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t gorgoues. It’s still nicer than every other car’s on the road, especially in terms of build quality. The wood work is incredible, the metal work feels durable and premium, and all of the tech—including BMW’s latest drive—remains hidden until you ask for it.

phantom series ii interior

Not only is the Phantom easy on the body, regardless of road, but it’s also easy on the mind. Screens can be hidden away, the gauges are a mix between old-school analog gauges, and even the cabin clock is analog. If you don’t want modern distractions, you don’t need to have them.

Drive the new 7 Series and it’s practically shouting at you the whole time. It’s a great luxury car but there’s so much tech and so many lights that it can almost be blinding. In the Phantom, there are no such distractions. Only pure, simple, old-school luxury.

Owners Should Drive Their Phantoms

phantom series ii interior

I spent about an hour in the Rolls-Royce Phantom II and I didn’t want the journey to end. I know that most Phantom owners will have drivers to take them to and fro. However, I highly recommend you ditch your driver and do it yourself. The Phantom offers a unique driving experience that can’t be found in any other car and you’ll never experience that from the back seat. Forget the chauffeur, get out and drive your Phantom.

2023 Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II: The Pinnacle of Bespoke Luxury Motorcars

  • Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest Youtube

Pursuitist automotive and lifestyle contributor Brian Armstead has been involved…

phantom series ii interior

In the fall of 2022, Rolls-Royce, the storied marque from Goodwood, United Kingdom, launched the pinnacle of bespoke luxury motorcars, the eighth-generation Phantom, known as the Phantom Series II.

The Series II will be the last internal combustion engine Phantom model, as Rolls-Royce, like many other luxury brands, sets its sights on full-electrification (by the year 2030). Spectre will be the first full-electric Rolls-Royce when it “Rolls” out in the 2024 model year.

Key highlights for the new Series II, include:

  • “Light-touch” visual and aesthetic enhancements in line with client requests and feedback
  • A new “Rolls-Royce Connected” feature that links Phantom with the marque’s private member’s app, Whispers
  • A new Bespoke model, the Phantom Platino

Why Phantom Series II?

“Phantom occupies an unrivaled position at the very apex of the luxury world. As our pinnacle product, it represents the very best of Rolls-Royce design, engineering, and craftsmanship – a perfect blend of vision, creativity, the finest materials, skill, patience, and precision. With Phantom Series II, we have retained and carefully protected everything our clients love about this superlative and luxurious item; subtle, yet meaningful enhancements reflect their evolving tastes and requirements.

Phantom has always been viewed as the ‘best car in the world’: our Bespoke capabilities mean that, for our clients, it can be the best car for their world, too ,” – Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

Creating a Bespoke Legend

Work began on the Phantom Series II in 2017. In creating the new model, Rolls-Royce designers and engineers took into serious consideration requests of clients, who implored Rolls-Royce not to make any major changes to an already iconic motorcar. In answer to these client demands, only the lightest of design touches, embellishments, and adaptations have been incorporated. From the engineering and design perspective, the new model was not about what should be changed, but what should be preserved and protected.

A New Expression

The new model retains Phantom’s commanding presence, and is further enhanced by a new polished horizontal line between the daytime running lights, and a subtle, geometric change to the Pantheon Grille that makes the “RR” Badge of Honor and Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament more prominent when viewed from the front. The grille is now illuminated, and headlights are embued with laser-cut bezel starlights, creating a visual connection with the interior Starlight Headliner, and adding presence to Phantom’s night-time silhouette.

Phantom’s side profile retains Rolls-Royce’s signature short front and long rear overhang, long wheelbase and broad “C”-pillar, while preserving key lines running from the Spirit of Ecstasy to the tapered rear end.

The side profile is enhanced with a suite of new wheels. A 3D, milled, stainless steel wheel with triangular facets is available in a fully or part-polished finish. Our test Phantom was outfitted with disc wheels, a design feature of 1920’s Rolls-Royce motor cars. This disc wheel is produced in both polished stainless steel and black lacquer, adding a dramatic design touch to the overall stunning presence.

Responding to Phantom clients who previously requested a darkened chrome grille surround, black bonnet reins, windscreen surround and side frame finishers, these may now be commissioned.

Phantom’s interior remains almost unaltered: the steering wheel has been made slightly thicker, providing a more immediate point of contact for the driver.

Rolls-Royce Connected

The launch of the new Phantom includes the debut of “Rolls-Royce Connected,” featuring the private-member’s app Whispers . Whispers enables the owner to send an address directly to their Phantom, providing seamless navigation.

Rolls-Royce Connected also displays the vehicle’s location, security status and current “health” conditions on Whispers. Through the app, owners can contact a preferred dealership for any servicing requirements or information about their Rolls.

The Poles of Luxury

As Rolls-Royce’s pinnacle product, Phantom attracts an elite stratum of Rolls-Royce clients. It is no coincidence that Phantom attracts the most ambitious and challenging Bespoke commissions ever undertaken by Rolls-Royce.

The resulting creations − each an artistic masterpiece in its own right − illustrate the fact that since its inception, Phantom has always been whatever the client wants it to be; earning the “Best Car in the World” from leading auto-critics, including this auto writer.

Roll’s well-noted bespoke customization program (Bespoke Collective) sets the tone for every Phantom that leaves the Goodwood factory. There is no such thing as a “typical” Phantom, as the desires of each client span what Rolls-Royce calls “The Poles of Luxury,” reflecting owner commissions’ full spectrum of interests and influences.

According to Rolls-Royce, the challenge for the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective is to accommodate client desires through a blank canvas, capable of becoming whatever the client wishes it to be, and a true reflection of their individual style and character.

The “King” of Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke Collective is the new Phantom Platino, which offers, among many other ultra-luxe features, a hand-painted, hand-embroidered silk interior; a dashboard timepiece surround made from a 3D printed ceramic; and a custom Starlight Headliner with a unique design created to draw the eye rearwards, with shooting stars following the sweeping arc of the pattern.

Phantom in Las Vegas

The super opulent, Five-Star Wynn and Encore Resort Hotels served as home base for assembled media tasked with evaluating this superb vehicle. Pursuitist has visited many properties on the Las Vegas strip, and the Wynn and Encore rate at the top of our favorite Vegas properties list.

phantom series ii interior

Wynn, don’t lose!

The Wynn’s spacious, standard accommodations offer 640-square-foot resort rooms bathed in warm, neutral hues, enhanced by floor-to-ceiling windows and a lighting design that highlights an ambient experience both day and night.

This new concept by Todd-Avery Lenahan, president and chief creative officer of Wynn Design & Development, starts with a reimagined layout, a fresh and inventive take that maximizes the space for sleeping, lounging, dining, and working. The redesign also highlights the escapist theme of Wynn’s updated rooms and suites, with serene, yet stylish environments that according to Lenahan, inspire “an exhale at the end of your day.” Soft peach hues are blended with splashes of gold, textured drapes, and wall coverings, and a hint of black enamel, resulting in a room that feels warm, intimate, and sophisticated.

phantom series ii interior

Thoughtful details include larger vanities and dedicated shelves for guest belongings in the bathroom, a welcoming foyer with full-length mirrors and convenient hooks for garment bags and outerwear, and integrated outlets with USB ports at each bedside table for charging your devices. Dressers, TV credenzas, and minibars also have been transformed to ensure guests can unpack with ease and maximize their enjoyment of this retreat-like environment.

Completing the “Lux Double” is the Encore, the newest of the pair of Bronze Towers, which features all of the opulence of the Wynn, and takes it to the next level with larger, 740 square-foot rooms.

As a guest of either Wynn Las Vegas property, you’ll receive in-room Wi-Fi for up to four devices; access to fitness centers; access to resort pool and sundecks; a dedicated concierge offering special dining access, spa reservations and golf tee times; a digital newsstand of magazines and newspapers; Alexa in-room entertainment services and room controls; and parking.

Fine Dining

During our stay, the Wynn team worked very closely with Rolls-Royce’s Gerry Spahn, Head of Communications for the Americas, to create dining experiences worthy of a Rolls-Royce Phantom owner. To say we were feted like high rollers at several in-house restaurants would be spot-on.

phantom series ii interior

There are ten Fine Dining options in the complex: Casa Playa, Cipriani, Delilah, Lakeside, Mizumi, Mizumi Teppanyaki, Sinatra, SW Steakhouse, Tableau, and Wing Lei.

After a great multi-course dinner at Lakeside, we enjoyed after-dinner drinks at Delilah. The setting in Delilah was like a Vegas Nightclub back in the day, with live entertainment. The soloist with big band accompaniment was highlighted by dancing ladies on pedestals in Sinatra-Martin-Davis Jr.-style nightclub dress. It was very impressive, and the band was excellent.

phantom series ii interior

There are also 11 casual dining options and eight bars and lounges, including my favorite-the Tower Suite Bar right at the entrance to a bank of private elevators to take me to my suite. The Tower Suite features comfortable sofas and low-slung lounge chairs and some of the nicest, always-there-for-you waitresses and bartenders I’ve ever experienced. Choose from the bar’s signature Old Fashioned, a glass of Champagne, or a selection from their Private Collection of more than 70 rare and small batch whiskeys. Cigar smoking is allowed in many Vegas properties, and the Tower Suite Bar is a fine location to light up your favorite, Cuban-seeded smoke.

Driving the Phantom Series II

Imagine walking out of the Wynn Las Vegas to a cadre of Rolls-Royce Phantoms. Even seasoned guests of the Wynn, who depending on guest profile and availability, were chauffeured from the Vegas airport to the Wynn in their private fleet of Phantoms, were gaga over the collection staged for our media drive.

For our drive, Phantoms in multiple color options were available, and I quickly selected a $651,450 Dark Emerald over Cashmere Grey example, fitted with $13,000 22-inch, Black-Painted Disc Wheels. The color combination was in a word, stunning.

The Valley of Fire

As one with Pursuitist goals would expect, our Phantom test drive took us on a route as spectacular as the vehicle itself. Our drive through the renowned Valley of Fire State Park was breathtaking.

The ancient history of the Valley of Fires began beneath the seas. But over a hundred million years ago, water levels receded, leaving behind massive sand dunes and sediment that morphed into Aztec sandstone.

Over time, the forces of nature and the winds of time combined to form the magnificent landforms we see today. And the results are breathtaking, with towering arches, colossal overlooks, and hidden passages. Around each corner is another sight to behold, a testament to the creative and destructive power of erosion.

Native Americans were the first to make their mark here, arriving in the area more than 10,000 years ago. Visitors to the park have the opportunity to view their petroglyphs, a type of ancient rock carving, that date back to prehistoric times. This artwork provides a fascinating glimpse into what life was like for these native people.

The area began to take its current form in the early 20th century, when the Arrowhead Trail was built between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. That made travel possible, and soon surveyors and onlookers found themselves captivated by the valley’s charm.

For those early visitors, the first impression was remarkable. Geological layers and intricate landforms highlighted the warmth of the Aztec sandstone and other minerals. One visitor who saw the land at sunset said the valley looked like it was on fire, and the name was born.

A growing reputation gave way to development, and Valley of Fire State Park opened in 1934. Today, the park consists of more than 40,000 acres of beautiful landscape, campgrounds, cabins, hiking trails, picnic areas, and a visitor center.

Phantom Road Manners

phantom series ii interior

If you haven’t figured it out yet, power, style, and high luxury are the hallmarks of Phantom Series II ownership. To quell any road disturbances, Phantom coachwork is supported by a super rigid aluminum spaceframe structure. Vigorously press the accelerator, and effortless power emanates from the iconic 6.75-liter, twin-turbocharged V12 engine. Routed through a seamless eight-speed automatic transmission, 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque moves the near three-ton Phantom with aplomb. Phantom II’s Satellite Aided transmission can alert your Phantom when the road ahead will be steep or super curvy, and automatically adjust shift and performance parameters. Windshield-mounted cameras can sense road imperfections like potholes and adapt the suspension accordingly, lest you or your passengers would feel any ruffled behavior. Active Rear-Axle Steering and Cornering Brake control also assist with what may feel like an autonomous driving experience. It’s really that effortless.

Phantom Series II Interior

Inside the serenely-quiet Phantom Series II cabin, if it’s not standard or optional, then the Bespoke Collective can make it happen. Want commissioned artwork in your dashboard? There is a feature called The Gallery on the passenger front dash (fascia) that allows for the exhibition of art, photographs, or any special effect or feature that fits within The Gallery’s space. Above your head, you can commission the Starlight Headliner in any pattern or galaxy you desire. Rest assured, only the finest woods, leathers, and fine metals adorn the interior.

phantom series ii interior

My test Phantom Series II carried a base price of $475,000, with a whopping $142,100 in bespoke options like the $22,500 Ruthenium Bloom Gallery fascia, inspired by the delicate contours of flowers. Roll’s talented artisans laser cut and engrave the geometric design into dual-finish ruthenium (a rare metal) coated layers.

Las Vegas Concours d’Elegance

The final event of an amazing time spent with the good folks of Rolls-Royce and the Wynn Las Vegas was our attendance at the Third Annual Las Vegas Concours d’Elegance, hosted by Grand Marshall Jay Leno.

phantom series ii interior

This year saw the first time the event was held at the Wynn Las Vegas, on the manicured fairways of the Wynn Golf Club, where over 230 show vehicles were displayed in 15 classes with everything from pre-war cars to supercars, and of course, luxury British Saloons from Rolls-Royce.

phantom series ii interior

To welcome the crowd to the inaugural event, Grand Marshall Leno mused: “You’re very fortunate because the crowd will never be this small again. This is a world-class event at a world-class resort, I mean, this is doing it right. Hey, it’s Vegas—you’re not going to get this at Walmart Cars & Coffee!”

phantom series ii interior

The climactic event of the 2022 Concours d’Elegance was the Tour d’Elegance, in which owners showcased Concours vehicles during a Sunday morning parade on the Las Vegas Strip.

What an experience! Thanks to Rolls-Royce and the team at the Wynn for the specially curated experience to help media and social influencers understand the lifestyle of the typical Rolls-Royce owner in Pursuit of the best!

bespoke rolls-royce phantom series II revives the opulence of the belle epoque

A love story: rolls-royce and côte d’azur.

A Rolls-Royce has been a familiar sight on the French Riviera for as long as the brand has existed (since 1904). The love story began as actors, artists, musicians and other wealthy luminaries would flock to the Côte d’Azur during the Belle Epoque. The migration of the English each winter in the late 1800s was so prominent that the aptly-named Promenade des Anglais was built in Nice. Even Sir Henry Royce found a seasonal home there, Villa Mimosa, where he would reside for the colder months until his death in 1933. A Rolls-Royce was always the motor of choice. And this continues on the coast today with the eighth-generation Phantom Series II, which can be tailored bespoke for each client. The car design captures the opulent, grand spirit of the beautiful age but with a touch of modernity.

roaring ‘20s wheels and star-lined headlights

First launched in 2017 , the eighth-generation Rolls-Royce Phantom is a testament to timeless design. Series II introduces a new expression of the car but only with the lightest of design touches, embellishments and adaptions led by Felix Kilbertus, Rolls-Royce Head of Exterior Design. The side profile retains the juxtaposition of short front and long rear overhangs, a long wheelbase, and a broad C-pillar for more passenger space as well as privacy. The split-belt line adds a subtle sculpture to the body as it trails from the front fender, curves gently towards the rear door, before falling elegantly into the lantern-esque taillights.

The design’s novelties are noticed in detail. Up front, a new polished horizontal line runs between the headlights above the pantheon grille, which is dramatically illuminated for the first time. Its subtle geometric change adds more prominence to the ‘RR’ badge of honour and Spirit of Ecstasy. The 22-inch wheels are dressed for the roaring ‘20s either milled with stainless steel triangular facets or solid discs in polished stainless steel or black lacquer. A touch of magic, as the exterior designer reveals, are the headlights that are graced with 580 intricate, laser-cut bezel stars.

blank canvas for customization

The car’s new headlights create a visual connection to the renowned starlight headliner that floats as if a night’s sky above the passengers inside the cabin. The sumptuous interior remains almost unaltered than previously, just a widened of the steering wheel. It acts as a blank canvas for the client to customize in collaboration with the Rolls-Royce bespoke team. The car then becomes exactly as the owner wishes: a reflection of their individual style and character; an extension of their personality.

Each model of the Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II becomes an artistic masterpiece in its own right – eight bespoke designs were revealed at the drive in Nice. The examples tailor for clients at the alternative but equally extreme poles of luxury. Customized cues extend from the subtleness of the two-tone paintwork and pinstripes on the exterior to a pandora of possibilities inside the cabin. Bespoke colors, materials and finishes lavish the interior, customizing every detail from the carpet to seats and even the champagne cooler. Clients can also house artwork specifically created by their favorite artists in ‘the gallery’ space on the fascia.

The cabin especially is a blank canvas for the client to customize with the Rolls-Royce bespoke team

Driving the Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II.

When pressed to call out a product that represents the pinnacle of luxury, one often precedes the pronouncement with “the Rolls-Royce of.” The reference is hardly new. The British marque’s reputation was duly noted as far back as 1907, when the British publication Autocar called Rolls-Royce the “best car in the world.” Arguably, that title, bestowed 115 years ago, remains relevant, as evidenced by our experience with the automaker’s new 2023 Phantom Series II.

The flagship of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since 1925, and now in its eighth generation, Phantom is the longest continuously running nameplate in the automotive industry—as forward looking and thoroughly modern as it is historically informed. For Rolls-Royce, there is no other way to build a Phantom. Its creators chose to launch the “Rolls-Royce of Rolls-Royces” (our words, not theirs) with a first global drive at the Maybourne Riviera , a brand-new, five-star hotel in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, perched on a hilltop within shouting distance of Monte Carlo. The crisp, clean architecture and tranquil lawns made it the ideal venue at which to reveal 10 colorful Phantoms, each one a unique commission designed to showcase the near-unlimited capabilities for customization.

The winding roads of France’s Côte d’Azur provide the perfect backdrop for the Phantom Series II, in all its singular expressions. The region of Nice was a favorite part of the world for the most notable artists of the 20th century. Here, Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and dozens of other painters, sculptors, writers and thinkers reveled in the sky, the landscape and the casual lifestyle that artfully inspired each one in a different way. Like those artists, what Rolls-Royce calls the “Poles of Luxury” are ten cars with names like Maverick and Connoisseur. Between these extremes were Platino, Patriot, Founder, Iconoclast, Prodigy, Sentimentalist, Extrovert and Aristocrat.

Sophie Weekes, Bespoke Lead on Phantom Series II, explained that, “Each of these ‘10 Exemplars’ exudes its own distinctive character. Our designers work with clients to develop a deep knowledge and understanding of our customers’ personality and then express that through their commission.” Indeed, the Phantom Series II is the ideal automotive canvas on which an owner can explore new colors and combinations of materials, fabrics and finishes to paint a masterpiece as individual as it is exquisite.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, under the aegis of BMW but fully autonomous, reinvented itself with the Phantom VII in 2003. It was a car that charted the company’s course for the 21st century, and was succeeded in 2017 by the Phantom VIII . But the Phantom—and Phantom owners—do not embrace radical changes, and so the Series II incorporates the most subtle aesthetic and technological enhancements that reflect the input of clients.

Astute observers would need to see the new car and its predecessor side by side to recognize the changes. In the front, a polished horizontal line connects the daytime running lights above the classic Pantheon Grille, while the “RR” badge and Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament are more prominent as well.

Felix Kibertus, Rolls-Royce’s head of exterior design, took a holistic approach to the lighting. “The grille itself is now illuminated, while the headlights are graced with intricate laser-cut bezel starlights, creating a visual connection with the Starlight Headliner inside. This concept which we call ‘light touch’ adds further surprise and delight to Phantom’s nighttime presence, and we see tremendous opportunities to continue to push our creative ideas.”

Day or night, the car’s profile emulates the formal proportions of every Phantom throughout history, with short front and long rear overhangs, and a long wheelbase in between. That long wheelbase can be made even longer in the Phantom Extended, the likely choice for owners wishing to be chauffeured. A high shoulder and wide C-pillars afford privacy for rear-seat occupants. Polished exterior brightwork is a feature of the Phantom design, but in response to client requests, both the grill and exterior trim are now available in darkened chrome.

Perhaps the most apparent new exterior design cues are the wheels, whose triangular facets are 3-D milled from solid stainless and offered in a polished, paint or chrome finish. Optional stainless 22-inch disc wheels are a tip of the hat to those on the very first Phantom, and are polished or available in a black lacquer finish.

Project Manager Ralf Langmeier enumerated some of the engineering and production challenges, saying, “To produce a fully polished version takes 60.6 hours per wheel, mainly as a result of the multiple polishing finishes. On the issue of heat, we specify that the heat dispersion rating of the brake fluid is slightly higher than with other Phantom wheels. Also, we have designed the openings to optimize airflow between the 20 [hidden] spokes. This took a number of simulations to find the ultimate size, angle and position to ensure that performance remains.”

The new wheel design featured on the Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II.

Because today’s Rolls-Royce owners are a tech-enabled crowd, the new Phantom Series II incorporates “Rolls-Royce Connected,” which communicates with Whispers, a Rolls-Royce private-members’ App. This preloads navigation instructions, displays the car’s location, security status and other information to a mobile device when the owner is away from the vehicle. And when they do enter through the wide “coach doors,” they encounter as comfortable an environment as one can imagine—at least on four wheels.

Front passengers enjoy opulent seating, separated by a wide center console, but apart from a thicker steering wheel, the cabin remains almost otherwise unchanged. In the past, clients might have assumed that a Ponderosa’s worth of leather and acres of burl would swath the interior, but today’s Rolls-Royce customers—whose average age is 45—appreciate other materials and finishes, including fabrics in wool, silk and even bamboo-based fibers. Embossing patterns and hand-painting fabrics and surfaces are also not out of the question for the artisans at the marque’s headquarters and production facility in Goodwood, England. All that is required is a creative idea, an artful solution and time.

The Phantom Series II’s most arresting interior feature is the Gallery, a glass-encased expanse across the dash that can contain a custom design of the client’s choosing. Recent displays have included cloisonné butterflies, porcelain roses, bas reliefs replicating a client’s DNA and paintings commissioned from favorite artists.

Driving the Phantom is the quintessential luxury-car experience. Both front and rear occupants enjoy what Rolls-Royce designers call a “magic carpet ride,” one as soft and compliant as it is silent and smooth. The famous Ogilvy headline written in 1958 remains true that, “At 60 miles an hour, the loudest noise comes from the electric clock.” Thanks to more than 200 pounds of sound insulation and tires that use a layer of foam inside to lower cabin noise by as much as 9 dB, wind and road noise is greatly attenuated, while the engine and exhaust sound are distant reminders that one is underway.

The headlight design on the Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II.

According to Rolls-Royce’s head of exterior design, “the headlights are graced with intricate laser-cut bezel starlights, creating a visual connection with the Starlight Headliner inside.”  James Lipman, courtesy of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

That engine is the same 6.7-liter, twin-turbocharged V-12 from the previous Phantom VIII, making 563 hp at 5,000 rpm and 664 ft lbs of torque at just 1,700 rpm. In other words, as the old Rolls-Royce ads used to say, power is “Adequate.” Actually, power, and especially torque, are obscenely adequate, delivered to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission shifted with the aid of GPS that pinpoints the car’s location, computes speed (which is limited to 155 mph) and optimizes gearing based on the road ahead.

The wafting ride of the Phantom is underpinned by self-leveling air suspension, fine-tuned by a camera-aided “Flagbearer” system that scans the road to preconfigure spring and damper rates based on road conditions. Tipping the scales at a little less than 5,800 pounds, the Phantom Series II is no lightweight, but that heft is judiciously managed, thanks to Rolls-Royce’s modular aluminum space-frame chassis that is stiffer and lighter than steel. Most of the body is aluminum as well. That modular architecture will lay the foundation of every future Rolls-Royce, regardless of its motive power. It’s no secret that Spectre, the automaker’s electric coupe to be unveiled later this year, is a harbinger of things to come. With that, some speculate that the Phantom Series II may be the penultimate—or even final—V-12-powered Phantom. Whichever it is, we say, “Savor the moment.”

A close-up of the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament on a Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II sedan.

The “RR” badge and Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament feature more prominently on the latest Phantom.  James Lipman, courtesy of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

And savor, we do. Leaving our hotel, we hit the motorway and soon exit onto serpentine mountain roads toward the picturesque village of Gourdon, sharing narrow lanes with dozens of indefatigable bicyclists. The Phantom has the uncanny ability to “shrink” when pressed into athletic moves, its handling dynamics akin to a sports sedan with a little meat on its bones. Acceleration is stupendous, but so too is the braking. And the steering is quick and offers plenty of feedback.

With sure-footed precision, the Phantom negotiates tight turns at speed—some with precipitous drops on the right. Much of the deft handling is due to four-wheel steering that aids maneuverability below 37 mph and improves stability above 50 mph. In short, this is a delightful driver’s car. It’s also the perfect car in which to be driven, as I discover during a stint as rear passenger.

Our destination is Saint-Paul de Vence, one of the most perfectly preserved medieval towns on the French Riviera . Situated on the crest of a hill, it was frequented by artists like Picasso, Miró and Matisse, whose paintings hang in the Café de la Place, a small restaurant attached to La’Colombe d’Or. Marc Chagall is buried in the cemetery up the hill. Nearby, the gardens of the Fondation Maeght are filled with sculpture, and its galleries contain one of Europe’s largest private collections of modern art, including important work by Giacometti, Miró, Braque and Chagall. Each of these artists was connected by the period and the place, yet each was unique, not unlike every personalized Phantom Series II, the base model of which starts at $475,000. It should be noted that, with exclusive options, each commission might require a year or more to build. But then, creating art takes time.

It was already a masterpiece. Now it's a platinum masterpiece. The 2023 Phantom Series II has been labeled “the greatest car in the world” by its maker, Rolls-Royce. And to commemorate the adaptation of the eighth-generation Phantom, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has created a launch edition that is a bespoke magnum opus. Named for its breathtaking silver-white finish, the 2023 Phantom Series II Phantom Platino unapologetically demands attention from everyone you pass. Gorgeous on the outside. Sumptuous on the inside. Mirroring the early days of Rolls-Royce, the front seats are finished in Italian leather while the rear seats are upholstered in bamboo fiber and cotton fabric. Together, the materials create a one-of-a-kind repeating pattern based on what Rolls-Royce calls “an abstract interpretation” of the Spirit of Ecstasy ornament. You’ll find the same design on the dash as well as on the center console and armrests. All Rolls-Royce Series II Phantoms have received updates, including a more prominent Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament, an illuminated Pantheon grille with a darkened surround. Inside the Platino, the iconic Rolls-Royce Motor Cars starlight headliner draws your eyes toward the rear as shooting stars follow a sweeping arc. Being a Rolls-Royce Phantom, the cabin is exceptionally roomy and comfortable, filled with the finest leathers, woods, metals, and fabrics – all carefully chosen to deliver an aura of opulence and beauty. In true Rolls-Royce Motor Cars form, the Phantom Platino is powered by a 6.8 liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine capable of 563 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. You can travel from zero to 60 in 5.15 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph. That power is diverted to the rear by an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Platino is the most decadent model of the already-decadent Phantom range. It's a moving work of art where quietness, privacy, luxury, and beauty reign supreme.

The Moskva-2 was a sophisticated rollfilm camera with coupled rangefinder . It was a self-erecting folding camera for type No. 120 film rolls. Its opening button released the front door as well as a two-frame Newton-type viewfinder . Its solid sturdy metal body was covered with soft black leatherette. The camera supported two formats by means of an optional small format frame and a back with two red windows .

The camera had a rangefinder setup similar to that of German Ikonta rangefinder cameras. The special trick to couple it to the focusable lens in the folder's front standard was that its movable part was separated from the rangefinder's body on top of the camera. This separate optical part was mounted on the front standard and had to be unfolded after having unfolded the camera. The little wheel of that separate rangefinder front lens had to be used to adjust distance setting while looking through the rangefinder's ocular . The camera had a 110mm f4.5 lens in a "Moment" shutter for speeds 1 to 1/250 sec plus B mode. The shutter had to be released by pressing the button beside the film advance wheel. The button was locked after exposure until the advance wheel was turned again.

The values of fuel consumptions, CO2 emissions and energy consumptions shown are based on the new WLTP test-cycle and determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval. The figures shown consider optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tyres available on the selected model. Changes of the configuration can lead to changes of the values.

For vehicle related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO2 emissions the CO2 values may differ to the values stated here. They do not relate to any one particular vehicle, nor are they part of any offer made, rather they are solely for the purpose of comparing different kinds of vehicle.

Further information about the official fuel consumption and the specific CO2 emissions of new passenger cars can be taken out of the "Guide to Fuel Consumption, CO2 Emissions and Electricity Consumption of New Passenger Cars", which is available at all selling points and at https://www.gov.uk/co2-and-vehicle-tax-tools/ in the United Kingdom, https://www.dat.de/co2/ in Germany and or your local government authority.
