Burbank Family Delivers Creepy Fun With This Year's Haunted Manor Display

BURBANK, Calif. — You don’t need a crystal ball to tell you that this is not going to be your typical Halloween, but that doesn’t mean beloved traditions can’t find a way to continue.   Take Rotten Apple 907 , an annual event at 907 N. California Street in Burbank. For nearly 30 years, Preston Meyer and his family have been hosting the haunt, which started after his daughter Melissa was born.

What You Need To Know

Rotten apply 907 has been holding an annual haunted house event for nearly 30 years the event is free, any donations will be gifted to vbas (volunteers of burbank animal shelter) the live display runs friday, saturday, and sunday night from 7 to 10 p.m. through november 1  the display is located at 907 n. california st. in burbank.

With a late October birthday, naturally all of her parties were Halloween themed, including what Meyer calls an old school haunted house. “With the grapes and the spaghetti,” he laughed, “and the kids that came to trick or treat, they wanted to go through the haunted house. So we actually started doing a haunted house through the house itself.” After a few years they moved the festivities to the front lawn, constructing an enclosed maze that would draw an enthusiastic crowd of about 3,500 people. When the pandemic hit, it suddenly became a much scarier scenario. “When you figure you’ve got 3,500 [people] in a confined area screaming their guts out,” Meyer explained, “just doesn’t work for COVID.” So, they came up with a new plan. Forego the usual haunted house and create what the retired building inspector calls, a lawn display. That’s actually a 'monstrous' understatement.

What he and his Rotten Apple gang of family and friends really built is a massive feat of construction and creativity — a two-story structure with panels that open to reveal several rooms. “It’s all screwed together and set on top of each other and braced and swayed,” Meyer said, “and that’s where the building inspector part come in handy, because I know wind loads and things, so that makes that part easy.” What’s not easy he says, is spending three hours a night with his head inside a bowl. Meyer plays a kind of fortune teller, but instead of gazing into a crystal ball, he gazes out of it, issuing rhyming prophesies from inside his glowing orb.

And a family tradition that always has locals screaming for more. This is the final weekend for Rotten Apple 907’s Haunted Mansion. The live display runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night from 7 to 10 p.m.

Follow the story of Mr. Sticky and the missing people as he comes out to play. This show features 3 projectors, a lake, several animatronics and runs every few minutes. Social distancing and masks are required here with well placed numbers on the ground. I suggest you watch the show a couple times to not miss anything as there are several effects such as a light up talking bird and a radio that speaks during the show that may be harder to follow in some areas. The story of Mr. Sticky returning for Halloween is very family friendly and safe and smaller children shouldn’t find it too scary as it mixes humor and the story in a way that even the younger ones can follow.  Come join the servants of Mr. Sticky and enjoy this adorable yard show.

This display features a skeleton laying on the floor, zooming on an iPad amidst punny gravestones such as “Ben Better” “Perry Noid”, and “Dee Parted”. The scene also contains Trick or treating kids, and witches gathering around a cauldron.

Halloween Yard Displays Los Angeles Valley Castletymo Origins Haunting Drive By Show Community Home Haunt Socially Distanced Outdoor Decorations

Castletymo is a drive by display with a couple of mannequins perched in an apartment window. One window contains a red eyes werewolf and a skeleton in ritual garb. The other features an undead bride and her skeletal mother perched among skulls, wardrobes, and candelabra as if getting ready for a wedding amidst spider webs. While this one lacks the expensiveness of a yard display, it’s nice to see an apartment window getting into the Halloween spirit.

Pierdell Fantasmagoria

LA Yard Haunt Displays, Halloween Yard Displays Los Angeles Valley Haunting Drive By Community Home Haunt Socially Distanced Outdoor Pierdell Fantasmagoria North Hollywood CA

By Pamela Van Hill: Pierdell Fantasmagoria is found in North Hollywood. Featuring a greeter and crypt taker and a huge holographic screen. This is a simple yet effective yard display that shouldn’t be missed featuring several props that interact and speak to the guests. It can be hard to hear what each prop is saying so make sure you’re walking along the fence posts so you don’t miss any of the cool effects . My favorite is the light up cryptic baby greeter you meet at the front gate.

Rise of the Dead

1400 Andenes Dr., Glendale, CA 91208

haunted houses near burbank ca

By Pamela Van Hill: Rise of the Dead is found in Glendale and features a headless horseman, singing pumpkins and an adorable tale of selfish children taking everything they can while trick or treating. As another stunning yard display there is a lot to walk around and see here and the paths leading up to the different props are all open. Stop by and see the women in the coffin or the tall lit up skeleton guarding the door. Very family friendly and with lot’s to see and do, Rise of the Dead is a great place to take the entire family.

999 Happy Haunts is a massive yard display containing a cornucopia of haunt highlights. Three pumpkins, similar to Curse of the Raven , with projected faces tell stories, including Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven. Inflatables showcase A Nightmare Before Christmas characters like Oogie Boogie and Lock Shock and Barrel as well as a grim reaper on a motorcycle.  A group of three witches stand over a bubbling cauldron, cloaked in a red light. A projection of two little girls walk towards participants as a skeleton soaks in a bubble bath. And all the bushes contain illuminated eyes that blink at you. There’s just so much to see here and that’s an absolute treat.

This passionate haunt display excels in lighting and simplicity compared to some of its overcrowded brethren. Showcasing a classy, red and orange lighting scheme with pumpkins lining the roof and planter areas, it is a pleasure to see. While not as impressive or technologically savvy as some others, it could inspire those wanting to showcase a more refined and less horror focused Halloween yard display.

LA Yard Haunt Displays, Halloween Yard Displays Los Angeles Valley Haunting Drive By Community Home Haunt Socially Distanced Outdoor haunted shack Torrance CA

The haunted shack has created a replica of stranger things’ Starcourt mall complete with projected animations and an animatronic “Mind Flayer”. While unable to put on their traditional walk though maze, haunted shack still delights. Here you can stand under the claws of the Mind Flayer, basking in red light as it makes it way into your mind. The effect is augmented by plenty of fog as a deep and ominous voice thanks you for coming. It’s a creative and culturally relevant take on the yard haunt. Signs are posted reminding attendees to observe Covid guidelines and donations are accepted.

Silver Shadows Cemetery

The skeletons have made themselves at home in the yard, climbing trees, hanging off the custom coffin mailbox, and one even enjoying a beer. Angelic, ghostly skeletons hang from the trees and hedges and jack-o-lanterns line the edge of the driveway.

My kids flipped out at this house on Jessica dr. I’ve had to take them back 3 times. I admit it’s spectacular with the flourescent centipedes and forest. Loved the Venus fly traps Whoever you are, awesome job

The house in Mt Washington on Jessica Drive is amazing with all the neon and glow in the dark centipedes, spider webs, 12ft tall trees with eyes that glow and skulls at the end of tree limbs, and the Giant Venus Fly trap is so cool. It’s a must see on your tour of decorated houses.

The Haunt with No Name Yet is my favorite! I’m not really into gory walkthroughs. This haunt is really spooky, with a nice atmosphere. There’s lots of detail, and I think like everything is hand made by the creators. Definitely worth a visit!

Haunted Spots in California

From spirit-filled ships to ghostly caverns, here are 10 of the most haunted places across the state

The forlorn spirit of a lovely young woman, a headless friar, a bevy of prehistoric phantoms: frightful sightings abound in these paranormal hotspots across California. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, a visit to these 10 spooky spots is sure to deliver a thrill. Listed from north to south, here are a handful of reportedly haunted houses, hotels, ocean liners, and more.

Fort Humboldt State Historic Park ,  Eureka

Overlooking a rugged bluff in Humboldt Bay, this former fort’s remote location in Humboldt County lends an eerie air. The real draw, however, is the supposed ghost of a deceased commander who succumbed to malaria in 1897 and now stares out hospital windows as hikers stroll past.

Preston Castle ,   Ione

The castle’s foreboding facade looks straight out of a horror film. Once a reform school for unruly youth and abandoned children, the structure’s sinister history includes corporal punishment, toxic dunking baths, and a housekeeper’s murder. Open for tours year-round, the Amador County castle turns into a full-fledged haunted house come October.

Bodie State Historic Park ,   Bodie

Spanning 500 acres in Mono County , about 75 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe, Bodie is a Gold Rush–era ghost town frozen in time. More than 100 structures remain, as do the supposed spirits of prospectors. While dishware shards and nails can be found on the streets, anyone who takes home a souvenir risks the curse of Bodie (and it’s also against park rules).

Moaning Cavern ,   Vallecito

Named for the wailing sound air once made passing through the cave (prior to its eventual widening), this Calaveras County wonder is also a site for some of America’s most ancient remains. Bones up to 12,000 years old have been discovered here, and many believe that the cavern is home to prehistoric paranormal activity.

Winchester Mystery House ,  San Jose

A door that leads to nowhere and a staircase that dead ends into the ceiling? It’s said that widow Sarah Winchester designed the house this peculiar way to confuse the ghosts: men killed by her late husband’s creation, the Winchester rifle.

Point Sur Lighthouse ,   Big Sur

This picturesque lighthouse has been illuminating the waters off the coast of Big Sur since 1889. Perhaps it’s the original keeper who some believe still visits the site in his original uniform. Moonlight tours are available for the brave and the curious.

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel ,   Los Angeles

Stay at this swanky hotel for a chance to glimpse one of the most glamorous ghosts of all time. It’s said that Marilyn Monroe herself still haunts the halls. Guests have also reported mysterious trumpet music believed to be the spirit of Montgomery Clift who liked to practice in suite 928.

The Queen Mary ,   Long Beach

Once known as the “Grey Ghost,” the Queen Mary serves up chills in the form of screams from a decapitated sailor in the boiler room and visions of a lady in white roaming the halls. Visitors can choose from a handful of haunted tours , or book a stay in Stateroom B340 for overnight thrills. (Note: The Queen Mary has suspended tours and stays until at least 2022, but you can still behold the massive ocean liner from the Long Beach’s Shoreline Village .)

El Adobe de Capistrano ,   San Juan Capistrano

Go for the chips and guacamole; stay for the headless friar sometimes seen at the restaurant’s door! This Mexican eatery sits atop the town’s old jail. A spirit of a former prisoner reportedly haunts the wine cellar, converted from a cell.

Hotel del Coronado ,   San Diego

In 1892, 24-year-old Kate Morgan checked into this luxurious waterfront resort alone and then ended her life on the hotel’s staircase. Many guests have experienced strange breezes, flickering lights, and phantom footsteps believed to be evidence of the young woman’s unrest.
