A Century of Camaraderie: Catalina Island Yacht Club Marks 100 Years

city yacht club

AVALON– The Catalina Island Yacht Club (CIYC) kicked off its 100th season in grand style on May 25th. A resounding cannon shot marked the raising of the American flag, setting the tone for a momentous occasion. Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office presented Commodore John Wells with a proclamation honoring the club’s rich history. Harbor Master Orne Carstarphen of the Avalon Harbor Department concluded the ceremony with a celebratory water cannon salute. The festivities continued with an Opening Day parade featuring a colorful display of dinghies traversing the harbor. This centennial year promises a calendar packed with special events, including participation in the city’s Fourth of July parade and a grand gala at the iconic Avalon Casino.

Catalina Island, a haven for boaters and beachgoers alike, boasts a rich maritime tradition. Nestled in the heart of Avalon Bay is the CIYC, a historic landmark that has served as a social hub and a welcoming harbor for generations.

From Humble Beginnings to Enduring Legacy (1893 – Present)

The CIYC’s story stretches back to 1893, when the Banning brothers, who owned most of Catalina Island at the time, established the island’s first yacht club. This initial iteration catered primarily to the Bannings themselves and other island residents who shared a passion for sailing. However, the club didn’t last long.

A decade later, in 1903, residents reignited the dream of a dedicated yacht club. This time, they founded the Sophia Yacht Club on the approximate site of the present-day CIYC. This marked the beginning of a more enduring institution.

Over the years, the club has weathered storms (both literal and figurative). Expansions and renovations have taken place, most notably in 1924 when the current clubhouse was built. The Catalina Island Yacht Club has persevered, evolving into a cornerstone of the island’s yachting community.

Today, the CIYC stands proudly on Casino Way, its white facade and iconic blue trim a familiar sight to boaters cruising into Avalon Bay. Stepping inside the clubhouse, visitors are greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. Nautical decor adorns the walls and large windows offer panoramic views of the harbor, creating a perfect setting to unwind after a day spent exploring the island’s coves and coastline.

Membership in the CIYC comes with a host of privileges. The heart of the club is the spacious main dining room, where members can enjoy delicious meals with breathtaking views. For a more casual setting, the club also features a bar and lounge area, perfect for socializing with fellow members.

The Catalina Island Yacht Club extends its reach beyond its dedicated members. The club frequently hosts social events and regattas, drawing in the broader yachting community and celebrating the sport of sailing. Additionally, the CIYC maintains a strong commitment to the island itself. They support local businesses and organizations, fostering a spirit of community within the island’s yachting scene.

The Catalina Island Yacht Club has undeniably played a pivotal role in shaping Catalina’s maritime heritage. As they look towards the future, they remain committed to providing a welcoming space, fostering camaraderie and preserving the island’s rich nautical traditions. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of boats and the captivating allure of the sea, the Catalina Island Yacht Club offers an invitation to connect with the island’s vibrant yachting community and soak in the stunning scenery of Avalon Bay.

Minnesota Yacht Club Music Festival set to go after floods recede from Harriet Island

W ith the floodwaters now gone from Harriet Island in St. Paul, city leaders are detailing the extensive three week cleanup that will lead up to this weekend's Minnesota Yacht Club Music Festival.

St. Paul's Park and Recreation Director Andy Rodriguez says its been a lot of effort from over one hundred city workers to get the site back to normal.

"We started cleaning out like the Wigington Pavilion, clearing all the silt from the building, pressure washing, sanitizing the space and we have to check all the utilities for all the facilities on the island," says Rodriguez. "So, your electrical outlets, plumbing, gas. And they get to power washing and sanitizing the trails and just cleaning up all that silt and debris that comes from the river and the flood."

He says another large-scale clean up of the downtown St. Paul area will be underway all this week in preparation for this weekend's festival.

According to Rodriguez, this is one of the biggest cleanups he's ever been a part of.

"I would say definitely. It wasn't on my checklist for this year, that's for sure," he jokes. "But I would say things definitely were expedited a bit, you know, deploying more resources where we needed to, and bringing in contractors as well. It's a testament to our front line staff."

Rodriguez says the efforts will need to continue after storms Saturday night downed trees in the area, and created even more messes to clean up. He adds that things should be full steam ahead.

The two-day festival takes place Friday and Saturday. There are two stages with no overlapping sets between the 20 artists scheduled to perform.

Artists for the festival include Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Gwen Stefani, The Black Crowes and Alanis Morissette on Friday. Saturday will include locals from Soul Asylum, The Offspring, Gary Clark Jr. and Red Hot Chili Peppers plus more on each day.

Ticket and more festival information is available here .

Joystick Arcade toasts to a new era as Alley Cat, a multi-genre entertainment venue

Portrait of Jessica Rish

Once the bustling Iowa City Yacht Club, then electrified as the Joystick Comedy Arcade, a downtown nightlife hub has been reborn as Alley Cat.

Still owned by Corridor Entertainment Group, which also owns Studio 13, Players Sports Bar & Grill, and other businesses, 13 S. Linn Street in Iowa City has changed in name and focus only to offer a more conducive nightlife experience.

Jason Zeman, CEO of Corridor Entertainment Group, told the Press-Citizen that Yacht Club’s live music heyday was in the 1990s and early 2000s. Since the hospitality group took over in 2011, the club has seen multiple renditions of popular nightlife trends.

“Covid changed everything,” Zeman said. “We looked at what we could do that would still serve the community with live entertainment, and that is how we came up with the Joystick concept. Plus, there was no bar like that in the area.”

Joystick’s programming (which opened in 2021) was anchored by live stand-up comedy and supported by traditional arcade games like Mortal Kombat, Donkey Kong, and Pac-Man. This was a substantial shift from the building's predecessor when local music acts often performed at the Iowa City Yacht Club.

However, Alley Cat, which opened Wednesday, May 1, combines the best of both worlds: live music and comedy.

“It’s hard programming five nights of comedy each week,” Zeman said. “We wanted to make the space multi-purpose, so we decided to rebrand and pack our nights with various live entertainment more often.”

A fusion of Entertainment

The name Alley Cat came naturally. It was Studio 13's original name until 2001. Corridor Entertainment Group and Zeman thought the name encompassed Alley Cat's upcoming programming.

The bar will continue with comedy but fold in other forms of live entertainment. Allowing local bands to perform at the nightlife space and other artists like poets, will better reflect the Iowa City arts community.

“Now that things have returned to the new normal (after Covid), we got a lot of feedback that there’s not a lot of spaces for local artists and young bands who might not be getting booked at Elray's Live & Dive,” Zeman said. “And so, I listened. It’s just about supporting these local artists, whether that is music, spoken word, or poetry, because our town is known for that, and we want to showcase as much as possible.”

The comedy isn’t going anywhere.

Alley Cat will still host open mic sessions on Sunday and Tuesday evenings. An open mic night will also be held on Wednesday for musicians and spoken word artists. Thursdays will rotate through live entertainment from local bands to local and national comedians. Fridays are specifically dedicated to music. Saturday nights at Alley Cat will have a rotating variety of comedy, drag shows, and music.

The popular arcade games will remain, as will karaoke.

“Alley Cat has blossomed into a hybrid format of what Yacht Club and Joystick were,” Zeman said.

Alley Cat will also serve food after taking a year off. The service returns with a menu of typical bar foods, like chicken strips and French fries. The bar is also dedicated to having a strong variety of non-alcoholic drinks because it is one of a few downtown establishments that are 19+.

“These spaces are really important,” Zeman said. “We try to make sure that we have like with our space and have different things to do in here if you are sober or 21 yet, that people can have a good time here without alcohol being a part of it.”

Preserving a historic legacy

History seeps through the brick walls of the 100-year-old building at 13 S. Linn St.

It initially opened as a mortuary at 605 Kirkwood Ave, operating for more than 50 years, though bodies were never stored in the building. The facility was primarily used for embalming and moved to its current location in 1984.

From the mid-80s on, the building went through a variety of iterations, housing a furniture store, several telephone companies, a photo development store, and even a bus leasing company.

Scott Kading owned the Yacht Club before Corridor Entertainment Group took over in 2011 and has been committed to maintaining the charm and history of the building.

“I'm very cognizant of the past, and I do change things for the future because you always have to get the upgrade and innovate and such, but we (do) keep certain things the same,” Zeman said, referring to the signed bricks in the lower level, some of which were signed back in the 80s.

Alley Cat is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Dozens of boats drift away from Ontario marina during devastating flood

Latest Videos

Scenes of chaos erupted across the Greater Toronto Area amid Tuesday's historic flooding , including an incident in Oakville that looked like something ripped right from a disaster flick.

Dozens of boats broke free from their moorings at Oakville Power Boat Club just after 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

While no injuries were reported, the scene of boats being washed down Sixteen Mile Creek looked more like the aftermath of a major natural disaster than the result of a heavy downpour.

Dozens of boats broke loose and floated on Sixteen Mile Creek after heavy rain flooded streets and businesses in Oakville and the GTHA Tuesday. pic.twitter.com/kIqg9CAKkr — 6ixBuzzTV (@6ixbuzztv) July 17, 2024

Record rainfall midday Tuesday created several catastrophic-looking scenes across the region, including the boats that were seen adrift in the vicinity of Navy Flats Park.

Reports vary between 20 and as many as 35 watercraft were affected during the surging floodwaters, some washed out into the lake leaving boaters stranded.

Oakville News reported that rescue crews assisted 26 people in dinghies 0.5 nautical miles or just shy of one kilometre offshore, while a 24-foot jet boat was escorted back to safety.

Fast conditions forecast as 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac gets underway

CHICAGO - If weather forecasts hold up, this could be a record-breaking year of fast finishes for boat crews competing in this weekend’s 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race To Mackinac.

About 250 boats are participating in this classic Lake Michigan race this year. It stretches 333 miles from Chicago to Mackinac Island. This year, 2,200 sailors are on board - and about 20% are first-timers to the race known as America’s Offshore Challenge.

The festivities kicked off Friday in Chicago, with the Cruising Division boats getting their start. Today, the Racing Division boats kick off their part of the contest. The Chicago-to-Mackinac race is heralded as the longest freshwater sailing race in the world.

You can check the progress as the competition tracks up the spine of Lake Michigan. Each entry is equipped with a satellite tracker that sends information on speed, location and direction every 15 minutes. This race tracker gives you a color-coded map .

Michigan’s Best Tip: If the winds have the competing sailboats hugging the Michigan side of the Lake Michigan coastline during the race, beachgoers in West Michigan and Northern Michigan can get an eyeful of these beautiful boats as they pass. If you’re headed to the beach, bring a pair of binoculars.

“We’re expecting a very fast race this year with possible records being broken,” race staff said on social media today. “There’s a forecast for perfect downwind conditions that accelerate the further up the lake you look.”

The race starts near Chicago’s Navy Pier, heads up Lake Michigan, rounds the top of The Mitten and sails under the Mackinac Bridge before approaching the finish line near the Round Island Lighthouse alongside Mackinac Island. The fastest boats could reach the island later Sunday.

And once the boat crews step onto Mackinac Island, it’s party time.

Many of the boats will post individual updates, photos and videos during the race. You can follow the race on social media: #CYCRTM
