This is truly one of the best haunted houses Ive been to. Im not any Connoisseur of haunts, nor have I traveled to all of them throughout USA, but I can confidently say this is worth your money. The best one I had been to before this was cutting edge, and its on a different level. I like that it was mostly just me and my girlfriend walking through the rooms. We rarely ran into someone else or had a group follow us. There were rooms that I wish I could have stayed in for an hour, because the attention to detail and the craft involved with special effects was worth studying. There were plenty of frights, but there were moments where I was just simply awestruck (especially with certain animatronics). There were plenty of actors and moments where they timed it just right for you to see a story unfold. It was an extra touch I wasnt expecting but only enhances the experience tenfold. This is a jam packed 30 minutes and I would recommend you visit, even if you have to drive for a few hours to get here. With that being said, I want to fully acknowledge some things. Their ticketing system is STUPID! You have to cross the street to get a ticket, since the front door doesnt handle that. If you didnt know any better, youll be standing in line, only to find out you have to leave the line and lose your spot if you came solo. Luckily, if you come in pairs, its easy enough for someone in your group to hold your spot. The line is filled with loud and obnoxious teenagers. If this is too much for you, then consider getting a VIP pass. I was at the tail end of my vacation, so I didnt mind standing in line for an hour and 45 minutes before getting into the haunted house. we also showed up at 6:40 and the line was bonkers. It only got worse 30 minutes later. This was on a Sunday early in October. I can only imagine how busy it gets closer to Halloween, or on a Friday/Saturday. Parking is cash only, but if you get there early enough, there is actually plenty of parking in the surrounding area. The brick yard bar was fine enough for us to park for free and didnt get towed/booted.

Mixed. Haunted house seemed well done. However, we visited on a flashlight night. 3 VIP tickets and all we got was one very dim red finger light which did not illuminate anything for us. So while I think it had good effects none of us could see most of the attraction. The green lights seemed to work better but for the three of us it was an expensive disappointment and I would not go back.

I went last night with my friends. We waited an hour and a halfish in line before we made it, so not too bad of a line, especially for Friday the 13th. While you're waiting in line some of the actors will walk by, which was cool. I was pretty scared to do it after a traumatic haunted house experience when I was younger, but to be honest, the waiting room inside was spookier than the actual contents? Like most of the jump scares didn't get me, especially after we caught up to the group in front of us and they triggered the jump scares first. But the feeling of dread of being jump scared and looking around each corner in order to try and find the actors or props was the scariest bit. The sets were pretty cool, but I was in flight mode so I didn't really get an opportunity to admire them all. There were some gory rooms, and also some safe rooms to catch your breath. My friends who didn't want to go in the haunted house went to the concert, which was pretty good according to them. There was also clowns who fire danced. $40 is a little steep, and I'm not sure if I'll go again, but seeing the inside made the price seem reasonable.

I hadn't been here in years! It is still an awesome, spooky experience. My sister and I went on the Thursday before Halloween. We waited about an hour and 15 min in line. It wasn't too bad and the weather was nice. All of the rooms were very spooky and I got a lot of good scares. Thankfully we weren't grouped with any belligerent people (there was more than a few in line). We had a great experience. I found some house keys in the haunted house and security was very helpful with receiving them after I exited. Love this place

Photo of Tamerage S.

The Pros: Amazing haunted house with great sites throughout. The actors and props make for such a realistic experience. It's not a 5 minute walk through so the value is seen throughout. Nice to also have options outside the haunt to keep the night going. And although parking is paid parking there seemed to be many close by options. The Con: my only disappointment was the false advertising done in the long wait lines. Posters advertised a VIP club that would allow VIP entry at General Admission prices to participating haunts, so we left the long line to go across the street to purchase VIP tickets to only be informed this option no longer existed. So at the point upgrading was our only option because the line we left had more than doubled.

I have been to many haunted houses throughout the country and 13th Gate is by far one of the best. I make video reviews of all my travels and you can see the review of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qoAVB7Z69U&feature=youtu.be The layout is so well thought out. Huge set pieces and memorable characters make this haunt so immersive and wonderful. I highly recommend going. As you've seen with other reviews, Yes! the line is insanely long. Get there early or get VIP. You won't regret it!

Hands down an excellent Haunted House production. Excellent job by the crew, actors, and all those involved in making the experience a great one for consumers. This is the 2nd consecutive year I have gone to the 13th Gate with my girlfriend. Great experience for people of all tolerances to horror and gore, whether you jump at first sight or just laugh at it all (me). The amount of attention to detail is astonishing and is well appreciated. I hope they continue to add new rooms and themes as well as have actors and actresses who are good at improv when a person speaks back (also me)(hope y'all don't hate it). I will say I did miss the second park in the Acropolis offered in 2017, but the Carnevil theme was definitely on point. The Axe throwing and escape rooms were also a nice touch. I will return, and would recommend for anyone stopping in Baton Rouge this time of year. Get there early, drive around to find free parking and bring an empty Dr. Pepper can to receive $5 off a ticket! DISCLAIMER: My average review score 3.59 when I made this review--(take with a grain of salt) (I rely on Yelp to go to places with good reviews, may account for the higher average)

Line around the corner was worth the vip pass to skip line. Many things to do between a live band , ax throw, vr experience, and performers. Really cool haunted house with many actors to scare threw out the walk.

Performers preparing

Performers preparing

Live band

The wait time is extremely long, getting VIP tickets as definitely worth it. They also have a blood bank drive parked on the side of the line, if you give blood you get for VIP tickets. It's not tickets to get into the park it is just the upgrade. They let a lot of people in at the same time, so there is really not a lot of surprise scares, but the attraction and decorations are pretty cool. It's almost a 40 minute walk through the whole place, So it's a very long haunted house. Great make up, And costumes.

Thanks for the review, Rachel! We are continuously working on improving our long lines and wait times but sometimes it's hard to avoid on an 8,000+ visitor night. We are open on Thursdays and Sundays as well as every weekday before Halloween. We recommend people visit on these nights because we can guarantee much shorter lines, smaller groups, and a more intimate scare experience. Try it out next season!

I cannot say enough about this haunt. We traveled from South Florida to visit and we were NOT disappointed in the least. The details that this haunt has... are the best I have seen! From start to finish I was left in awe. We travel across the country to haunts and this has moved to my #1 ranked house! Highly recommended!

Get your free welcome guide, get the latest scoop from the red stick blog, the 13th gate: the spookiest place in the south.

Consistently ranked as one of the best haunted houses in the nation,  The 13th Gate  is the place to go if you are looking for a thrill. We sat down with owner Dwayne Sanburn to talk about how he got started, the expansion of his business, and what he has planned for the Halloween season.

Visit Baton Rouge: How did The 13th Gate come to be?

Dwayne Sanburn: As a kid, I always loved Halloween and scary movies. I went to my first haunted house when I was about 15 years old, and I just absolutely fell in love. I said, “This is what I'm gonna do.” I quickly realized when I got to high school that it was a business, and I was gonna have to make money to be able to open my own. I went to nursing school, and the week I graduated I rented my first building in Alexandria. A year later we opened up Louisiana Nightmares while I worked for the VA Medical Center as an ICU critical care nurse.

VBR: What does it mean to you to be a locally-owned Baton Rouge business?

DS: I love being in business here. I get to do what I love, which is create, and everyone seems to enjoy what we do. The people here have always supported The 13th Gate. We've become a Halloween tradition in Baton Rouge and I appreciate everyone coming out and supporting us.

VBR: What kind of changes and improvements do you make year-to-year to continue drawing interest and bring in new scares?

DS: I do a lot of things throughout the year to get ideas. I talk to customers, see what's trending, watch new horror movies, read horror books and go to other attractions. Every time I go on vacation, I end up in some cave or something. I'm always looking for the next big thing. And, that's how I discovered escape rooms. There were very few escape rooms in the country when I first opened  13th Gate Escape . We found out that they were really big in Canada, flew there to look at them, and then came back and started creating. I am always watching, analyzing, and talking to the public, so we can continue to innovate and create things that people love.

VBR: How did you make the decision to add escape rooms to The 13th Gate?

DS: For the most part, each escape room has nothing to do with horror, and you're gonna have a totally different experience walking into each one. As soon as you open the door to an escape room, you're transported somewhere else. Cutthroat Cavern, for example, has a lot of influence from “The Goonies,” “Indiana Jones,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.” It has a big pirate ship, and there are a lot of things to interact with. While The Disappearance of Flight 13, our newest game, has a flying plane, and it's very sci-fi – straight out of “The Twilight Zone.”

VBR: How does the experience in the escape rooms differ from the haunted house?

DS: The really neat thing about escape rooms is that once you play one, you want to play them all, because they're that fun. A lot of people come here not knowing what to expect, and then they're booking the next one before they walk out the door. Corporate groups come during the day because this is the best team-building activity you could possibly do. All the puzzles are designed where you have to work together, so you have to communicate if you want to escape; it's definitely a team game.

VBR: So Halloween is just around the corner; when do you start planning & building out the new additions to add to the haunted house each year?

DS: We start immediately after we close. We will start tearing out immediately and start building for the next year. People think that because it is seasonal we only work a couple of weeks out of the year, but this is a very, very detailed attraction and it takes a lot of work to maintain, and rebuild it every year. Between the escape rooms and the haunted house, we're constantly working.

VBR: What kinds of people visit The 13th Gate each season?

DS: We have a lot of people for whom coming to the 13th Gate has become an annual Halloween tradition. Our demographic has everyone—we get younger kids who you can't scare, but who love horror. And then you get a lot of the teenage crowd, but we get plenty of families as well. There have been many times that I have seen three generations come through together.

VBR: Do you have any tips or anything you want to tease about new scares and changes for this year?

DS: I encourage everyone to come early, because crowds do get big on the weekends. Thursday or Sunday nights are the nights with a little slower crowd, and you can get right in on those days. I think everyone should just come and see, because we have a lot of surprises and things they're not gonna expect this year for sure.

Dwayne’s love for creating new thrills keeps him at the top of his game and keeps customers coming back every year to see what new things are in store. Check it out for yourself, and experience this season’s additions to the scariest haunted house in the South. The 13th Gate Haunted House is now open for the season; find dates and pricing at  13thgate.com . Check out their website for details on the escape rooms, open year-round, seven days a week.

Really well done and varied haunt. Lots of different themes in the 13 rooms. Also about 45 minutes, which is a nice length. The line was long, so go earlier in the season or bring snacks while you wait!

Last so long for the price and will not disappoint , guaranteed.

Email Verified Scariest Escape Rooms

I with a group of friends went to the 13th Gate haunt and we all had a blast. Experiences were really terrifying. The escape rooms challenge your analytical skills extensively. It was also one of the scariest escape rooms I had ever participated in. Puzzles, riddles as well as clues really confused us. But we made it out eventually. The cave could trouble claustrophobic people. Cemetery was really creepy. The character Pennywise was an amazing one. The killer clowns had one of my friends running for his life. The actors performed commendably. I will bring my wife along next time.

Tickets rates are high and lines are too long. We paid $105 and expected a top notch performance. However it’s just a couple of creepy rooms and below average scares. Scary stuffs were neither available nor used by actors to unsettle us. In two words, not recommended!!

Email Verified Full Entertainment

Awesome. This was by far the best haunted attraction we’ve been too in the recent past. The props, the concept, the actors were all amazing. Impressed by the transition from one attraction to other and really appreciated the hard work put in to collate the unorganized sections. Haunts were damn scary and I screamed a heck lot of times. Full entertainment and tons of scares! Thank you so much for making my Halloween awesome!!!!

Email Verified Fun Experience

13th Gate has done a real good job in keeping the experience of customer engaging. This place has become so popular that people are thronging to it. Fortunately we were in with VIP pass and went for attractions in about 15 minutes skipping the general line. The Necropolis 13 cemetery was very scary. The open grave deep into dark underground was a horrifying experience. Scenery was immersive and background music was really great. I particularly liked the escape room it was challenging and fun. Overall, it was a fun experience.

Email Verified Good Service

We screamed, ran and laughed a lot in 13th Gate. The maze like cemetery gave us some great scares. Pennywise was very creepy. I am a horror movie fan. I don’t get scared easily in haunted houses usually. But few of the scares got to me. Killer clowns made my GF scream. My pick of the lot would be Necropolis 13 for obvious reasons. The staff were helpful throughout. Recommend this!

Fantastic Time

We really had a fantastic time at the 13th Gate. For me, the scariest part was the Necropolis 13 cemetery. It is a labyrinth of over 400 dark crypts and was very scary as well as amazing. The fire dancers added a fresh breathe of air. The house was very huge and at every corner there was something to frighten us. Props and decorations were excellent. Actors really deserve 5 stars. The prices were reasonable too… We will be back.

Email Verified Must Visit Place

Tremendous display of entertainment and horror together. VIP fast pass was really worth as we didn’t have to stand in long queue. The setup was lavishly constructed and progression from one attraction to other was executed magnificently. All the actors were damn good as they never missed an opportunity to scare us. I really liked the walking through the tunnel, and this was something unique I’ve experienced now. The staffs were nice. Overall, a mind blowing haunted show and plethora of horror stints at the 13th Gate!!

Great Effort

13th Gate, Oh My God, I am unable to come over this name. Me along with my friends went to this haunt and we are thrilled to bits. We are over the moon with the fact we spent quality time together in the best place possible. Everything is perfect with this place. Every year they add new themes which are fantastic. This step will bring them new customers and at the same time, old customers love to see them again. Fantastic effort guys. Will be back again.

Email Verified Damn Scary

Amazing concept and we were blown away by the interactive haunt inside the house. We visited in a group of four and we loved the entire set up and process followed by the staffs. The queue was managed well, and it took hardly an hour to get into the attraction. We went through multiple activities such as crawling through a crematory oven to getting lost in dark underground tunnels. It was damn scary, but we loved it. All actors were great and did a phenomenal job in scaring us. Affordable ticket pricing and we are looking forward to next year. Great work!!

Email Verified Fantastic Time

BEST haunted attraction by far!!! We had a fantastic time in 13th Gate! Lots of scares, movie quality effects, and wonderful actors. The Necropolis 13 cemetery...with its dark underground catacombs was intense scary. You could possibly piss your pants. Keep your children at home...its too scary for them. Worth visiting for all scare lovers.

LOUISIANA'S ULTIMATE HAUNTED HOUSE

13 tips for visiting the 13th gate haunted house, experiencing the 13th gate can be a thrilling and memorable experience, but it's essential to approach it with a sense of fun and adventure. here are 13 tips to help you make the most of your visit to our event:, 1. come on a slower night.

Most people visit the haunted house on a Saturday night closer to Halloween which makes the wait time to get in extremely long. We recommend coming earlier in the season or on a Thursday or Sunday night when the wait times are significantly shorter. Less people entering means that the actors have more time to do what they do best: scare the bejesus out of you. Slower nights equal a scarier show.

2. Embrace the Atmosphere

Immerse yourself in the experience by embracing the eerie ambiance and spooky setting. Allow yourself to get lost in the moment and suspend your disbelief.

3. Let faster groups pass you

Everyone travels through a haunted house at different speeds. If you see that a faster group comes up behind you, be courteous and let them pass you by. That way everyone can experience the haunted house as it was meant to be, and the group size doesn’t get too large.

4. Respect the Actors

The actors and performers in haunted attractions work hard to create a scary experience. Respect their efforts by not touching or harassing them. Follow any rules or guidelines provided by the attraction. No actor at the 13th Gate will ever touch or harm you.

5. Go with Friends

Attending a haunted attraction with friends can enhance the fun and excitement. Sharing the experience with others can make it more enjoyable and less intimidating. For the scariest experience, go with a group of 6 or less.

6. Stay Calm

While it's natural to feel frightened, remember that the scares are all part of the show. Try to stay calm and remind yourself that it's all in good fun. Please for your safety, no running or shoving.

7. Be Mindful of Your Health

Haunted attractions can be physically demanding, with lots of walking and sometimes tight spaces. Make sure you're in good health and able to handle the physical aspects of the experience.

8. Dress Appropriately and Secure your personal items

Wear comfortable clothing and well-fitting, closed-toe shoes. Make sure they are tied well when you enter or you might just jump right out of them. Believe it or not, every year we collect hundreds of shoes from customers that left them behind. In addition to shoes, make sure you securely store any personal items such as phones, keys, and jewelry. If it's expensive or something you hold dear, it may be best to leave it at home.

9. Don't Ruin the Surprise

Avoid sharing spoilers or details about the attraction with others who haven't experienced it yet. Let them enjoy the surprises for themselves.

10. Pick the bravest in your group to lead

The haunted house depends on guests continuing to walk non-stop through the haunted house to prevent backups and operate optimally. As you walk through the haunt, remember to keep moving forward at all times and never stop or go backwards.

11. Don’t drink too much before you enter

Many people feel the need to have a few shots of “liquid courage” before they enter. Just remember that drinking too much can ruin the experience for you and your friends and you could even be removed from the attraction if you are obviously drunk.

12. Use the restroom before you enter

Trust us on this one.

13. Have an Escape Plan

If at any point you feel overwhelmed or too scared, we have stationary security throughout the haunted house that will escort you out. Hundreds of customers a year leave early because they find it too scary. Don't hesitate to ask to leave if you need to. There’s always next year to try again!

Remember that the primary goal of a haunted attraction is to provide a fun and spooky experience. By following these tips and maintaining a sense of adventure, you can make the most of your visit and create lasting memories.

“Voted #1 Haunted House in America by The Travel Channel, MTV, AOL Cityguide, and Hauntworld.com”

The 13th Gate is the Ultimate Haunted House! Journey through 13 very frightening themed indoor & (weather-permitting) outdoor areas where your worst nightmares come true and anything can happen. From crawling though a crematory oven and an old hearse to being lost in dark underground tunnels or even finding yourself standing on a rickety bridge overlooking hundreds of live snakes, this 40,000 square foot haunted house is definitely not recommended for the faint of heart (nor is it recommended for anyone who is pregnant, has a pre-existing heart condition, is very young, or has a weak bladder)! The 13th Gate has consistently been recognized as one of the top Haunted Attractions in the country by Hauntworld.com, MTV, AOL Cityguide, Fangoria Magazine, Haunted Attraction Magazine, and The Travel Channel. During the off-season, the haunt employs a year-round movie industry construction crew, which includes award-winning Scenic Artists, Set Carpenters, Lighting and Sound Technicians, and Special Effects Artists. Many of these crewmembers have an extensive portfolio of Hollywood movies that they have been involved in and it is their artistic talents that have set The 13th Gate apart from most Haunted Attractions. During the Halloween season, over 100 professional actors, 12 special effects makeup and airbrush artists and several costume specialist work together to bring the terrifying show to life each night. Whether you are a fan of horror movies or Halloween, love to be terrified out of your wits, or just enjoy the detail of a highly interactive one-of-a-kind haunted house, the 13th Gate has something for everyone!

Awesome haunted house! Very well done. The graveyard was cool but the wait for that was very long, though they did put on a fire dance show for everyone which was cool. My only issue was the pacing of the guests through the main attraction. Not a whole lot they can do with that many people lined up but some of the scares get lost when you eventually end up in a clump of 20 people.

13TH GATE HAUNTED HOUSE

Widely regarded as one of the top haunted houses in the Country, The 13th Gate, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is the Ultimate Haunted House. Journey through 13 nightmarish realms where your worst fears come true and anything can happen.

The 13th Gate is a haunted attraction that is known for its extreme ultra-realism and is one of the most detailed haunted houses in existence. The artists behind the massive dark attraction are experts at blurring the lines between horror and reality, and guests frequently wonder between screams whether what they are experiencing is real or not. The Attraction’s level of detail, set design, and effects combined with their impressive actors and incredible makeup effects can only be compared to a Hollywood movie. The attraction features a real snake-infested Louisiana Swamp, nightly voodoo shows, claustrophobic cellars, hidden subterranean passages and even a prehistoric ice cave all seamlessly woven together and nothing short of masterful. The haunted house is constantly changing and growing from year to year so guests never know what to expect around the next terrifying corner.

The 13th Gate has consistently been recognized as one of the top Haunted Attractions in the country by Hauntworld.com, MTV, AOL Cityguide, Yahoo Travel, E! Online, USA Today, Fangoria Magazine, Haunted Attraction Magazine, The Travel Channel and many others.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A popular Baton Rouge based attraction has landed itself in one of the top spots when it comes to being rated as one of the spookiest experiences in the country.

According to Queen of Haunts, The 13th Gate is listed third on the list of the ‘Top TERRORific Haunted Attractions in the U.S.’

Experts say in the business of haunted attractions, the most important attribute for a haunt is to be scary, but not just ‘regular’ scary. An attraction needs to be deemed as heart-pounding, scare-out-of-your-wits terror and the 13th Gate has made the cut.

Queen of Haunts says the 13th Gate has an advantage given Louisiana is known for actual ghost sightings, “but they take it up a thousand notches from there with thirteen realms of experiences that will leave the best of us shook!”

Ranked at number one on the list is Edge of Hell in Kansas City.

The second place winner is NETHERWORLD in Atlanta.
