Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar
An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years.
The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said.
The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.
The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.
The incident is the latest example of recurring orca rammings around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.
Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis.”
According to the research group GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.
Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, with leading theories including it being a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.
Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.

The TV Series Finale That Got Everything Right
All the pieces matter, especially the final one.
The Big Picture
- The Wire's final episode, "-30-", wraps up the show's expansive and ambitious storytelling in a powerful and sweeping manner.
- The final season of The Wire , while somewhat divisive, still provides interesting commentary on ethics in news reporting and the interactions between journalists, police, and the public.
- The finale of The Wire , running for 93 minutes, gives closure to many characters and ends with a closing montage that is moving and fitting for the show as a whole.
When it comes to debating what the greatest TV drama of all time is, The Wire is one of those universally beloved shows that will just about always be considered a contender. It ran for five seasons between 2002 and 2008, and though it was overlooked by many while it was on the air (perhaps a consequence of being on while so many other iconic shows were, what with the 2000s being something of a golden age for TV), its legacy is now hard to deny or ignore. But even with a crowded landscape, it is strange that The Wire got so ignored, even if it didn't have too many big-name actors and was a fairly dense show, with a certain level of commitment being needed to follow it. That all makes it something of a miracle that it was able to last for five seasons and finish on its own terms . Indeed, of the only two Emmy nominations the show ever received — both for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series — one was for the final episode of the show's final season, "-30-."
The episode's title is a reference to a term sometimes used in journalism to signify that a story or article is at its end, with conflicting reports and ideas about the term and why it came to be. Still, it's hard to argue that it doesn't work as a name for The Wire's finale, given Season 5 had an emphasis on journalism in the city of Baltimore and that the show's creator, David Simon , was a journalist before he was The Wire's showrunner. The story told by The Wire was an expansive and remarkably ambitious one, given that, over five seasons, it explored various facets of Baltimore, usually adding a new one every season. It started with a focus on the police and street-level drug gangs, then covered life on the docks, introduced politics, had a focus on the public school system, and then featured journalism in its final season. It never totally lost sight of any previous stories or characters from season to season, meaning there was a gargantuan amount of things for a series finale to conclude. Thankfully, "-30-" was up to the task, sending off The Wire in a powerful, sweeping, bittersweet, and arguably perfect way .
'The Wire's Final Season Was Somewhat Divisive
Though "-30-" is one of The Wire's highest-rated and most beloved episodes , it does belong in a somewhat contested season of the show . For better or worse, The Wire's fifth season does have a primary storyline that feels a little less plausible and grounded than most of the other season's central storylines. It follows Jimmy McNulty ( Dominic West ) — who's the closest thing the show has to a main character — as he tries to get more funding for Baltimore's police force by manipulating various crime scenes to make it appear as though a serial killer is targeting Baltimore. This naturally stirs up drama, and becomes something intensely focused on by reporters at the Baltimore Sun, with this further increasing public attention on this make-believe serial killer.
10 Actors Who Appeared on 'The Wire' Before They Were Famous
Perhaps it clashes with the more realistic storylines the show had become known for, but it still uses this serial killer storyline to provide interesting commentary about ethics in news reporting and the interactions between journalists, police, and the public at large. It's the most outlandish thing McNulty does throughout the show, sure, but it doesn't clash with his prior characterization, considering how often he would do his own thing and rebel, frequently clashing with superiors in the police force like Bill Rawls ( John Doman ). It's far from the first time clashing against a system while trying to achieve a noble goal in an unconventional way is explored in the show, as Season 3's Hamsterdam storyline shows . And, for what it's worth, "-30-" does a great job at wrapping up this contested storyline and showing the consequences that unfold because of it, all the while wrapping up just about every other storyline and character arc the earlier seasons had explored.
'The Wire's Epic 90-Minute Finale Wraps Up Just About Everything
Long before the iconic HBO drama series Deadwood got a much-delayed feature-length conclusion in 2019 with Deadwood: The Movie , The Wire had its own epic finale. While no one can call "-30-" a movie by any means, it did run for 93 minutes, making it easily the longest episode of the show (perhaps comparing it to the two-hour M*A*S*H finale “Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" would be more fitting). With five seasons, 60 episodes, and hundreds of named characters , it certainly needed all the time it could to conclude things satisfyingly. Many of those still standing at the show's end are visited throughout "-30-," with the finale sparing no expense when it comes to bidding farewell to as many people as possible.
Naturally, the characters in the police force — including McNulty — were prominently featured throughout all five seasons, though the Barksdale organization they pursued throughout Seasons 1-3 has essentially been decimated. As such, the finale provides closure to Marlo Stanfield ( Jamie Hector ) and his crew, who more or less replaced the Barksdale organization. Certain characters prevalent in Season 2 (perhaps the show's most self-contained season) return here. The political side of the show gets concluded thanks to Tommy Carcetti ( Aidan Gillen ) and his staff finding out the truth behind the serial killer reports, and some of the young characters from Season 4 — like Dukie ( Jermaine Crawford ), whose ultimate fate proves emotionally devastating — also feature. It may be a long episode, but it makes every single minute count , and proves to be thrilling and hard-hitting as a way to wrap up 60 excellent episodes of television.
'The Wire's Finale Has a Closing Montage for the Ages
The final sequence of "-30-" wraps things up on a particularly notable high, and is likely striking enough to make even the season's detractors feel something. Given the scope of the show and the number of characters (many of whom died before the finale, sure, but certainly not the majority ) who are sent off in this episode, ending with a montage feels like the right move . Though it might not be quite as devastating as the more personal — and yet more all-encompassing — final montage seen in another HBO show, Six Feet Under , it's still close to perfect. And while the season finales of The Wire were no strangers to using montages to illustrate where numerous characters all ended up, showing each for a few seconds at a time, the show saved the best of the lot for last.
McNulty seeks some level of redemption for what he did in Season 5, picking up a vagrant he'd used earlier in the season as a potential fake suspect to be reported on. McNulty had sent him away from Baltimore, but tracks him down right at the end of "-30-" to bring him back. He stops to look over the city where the entire show's been set, and that's when the final montage of all The Wire's final montages plays, giving short snippets into the lives of many remaining characters. Some are tragic — like Dukie, who's shown to be addicted to heroin — while others offer some hope, like Bubbles ( Andre Royo ) being accepted by his sister and quite likely overcoming his own drug addiction for good. Life goes on for others, with promotions among certain politicians and police officials, the journalists continuing their work, and some criminals like The Greek ( Bill Raymond ) and Slim Charles ( Anwan Glover ) remaining at large. It's a grounded and level-headed approach to a climax , suggesting change in some areas, but an endless cycle of things like crime and addiction repeating for some, with this sort of finale feeling realistic and genuine without being too overwhelmingly despairing.
'The Wire' Ends On a Note That Fits the Show as a Whole
Some shows end triumphantly, and others end tragically. The Wire , overall, arguably sort of just ends. But it feels fitting, even if it's hard to describe that ending with only an adjective or two. Perhaps "bittersweet" could be appropriate, given there are characters who end the show in a better place than where they started (again, Bubbles), and there are some who end in a worse place than they've ever seen before. Other characters didn't even make it to the finale, and their lack of presence is felt, most notably fan-favorite character Omar Little ( Michael K. Williams ), whose sudden death earlier in Season 5 might be the show's single most shocking moment. But The Wire has always been hard to pin down emotionally ; it's one of the things that make all five seasons so great and memorable .
The series uses Baltimore as a way to explore numerous social issues that were all prevalent in America during the early years of the 21st century and continue to be relevant during these not-quite-so-early years of the 21st century. A finale that's occasionally triumphant, sometimes downbeat, in parts climactic, and in other areas more concerned with showing that "life goes on" and "history repeats" is perfectly appropriate for The Wire , and what the show's creators were trying to comment on throughout all five seasons of the show. For these reasons, "-30-" is an iconic conclusion , and one stunning conclusion where it's hard to work out how it could be any better as a final note for The Wire to end on. It's ambitious and far-reaching, leaving very few things unresolved thanks to its length, and hitting emotional beats that feel earned and appropriate. It perfectly represents the show at its densest and most thought-provoking, and it's hard to imagine many people sitting through 59 episodes of The Wire , only to find themselves not 100% satisfied with this 60th and final one.
The Wire is available to stream on Max in the U.S.

Oprah Winfrey apologizes for being 'major contributor' to diet culture
"I've been a steadfast participant in this diet culture," Winfrey said.
Oprah Winfrey is apologizing for being a "major contributor" to diet culture .
While hosting the WeightWatchers live special, " Making the Shift ," on Thursday, the talk show host acknowledged her role in diet culture and how she is "done with the shaming."
"I've been a steadfast participant in this diet culture," Winfrey said. "Through my platforms, through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years, through online -- I've been a major contributor to it. I cannot tell you how many weight loss shows and makeovers I have done and they have been a staple since I've been working in television."
MORE: Oprah Winfrey says she has released the shame of being 'ridiculed' for her weight for 25 years
During the special, which aimed to "catalyze a new wave of change in how we collectively redefine the cultural and personal relationships between our weight, our health and each other," according to a description of the program, Winfrey recalled the famous "wagon of fat" moment that took place on her talk show, which she said was "one of my biggest regrets."

"It sent a message that starving yourself with a liquid diet set a standard for people watching that I nor anybody else could uphold," she said. "And I've said this before, the very next day, I began to gain the weight back."
She also shared her experience with yo-yo dieting, which happened after a 1985 interview with Joan Rivers on "The Tonight Show," when she and Rivers made a pact to lose weight together. During the interview at the time, Winfrey also tells Rivers the different diets she's tried.
"I was so embarrassed," Winfrey said about that moment. "That was the start of a vicious cycle of yo-yoing that ended up with that liquid diet where I literally starved myself for months. And the result was that now famous wagon of fat moment."
Winfrey continued and said, "It's really hard to love your own body when the whole world is telling you it wasn't worth loving."
Before bringing on the first guests of the show, WeightWatchers CEO Sima Sistani and body acceptance advocate Katie Sturino, Winfrey shared that weight loss journeys are personal and implored others to "stop the shaming."
"Whether you choose to start moving more, whether you want to eat differently, whether you want to change your lifestyle, whether you want to take the medications or whether you choose to do absolutely nothing -- that you are satisfied exactly the way you are where you are," Winfrey said. "That's up to you, whatever your path, this has been a watershed moment for many people."
The special comes almost five months after she shared that she is using medication to help her maintain her weight loss, which she said has been a work in progress for the past two years. Winfrey didn't name the type of medication she is taking.
MORE: Oprah Winfrey confirms she's on a weight-loss medication, says she's tired of 'shaming'
In March, after Winfrey decided not to stand for reelection as a member of WeightWatchers' board of directors, the talk show host opened up about weight loss in the ABC special, " An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution, " which focused on her weight ups and downs documented publicly over the past several decades.
In the special, she revealed that she wanted viewers to learn about weight and obesity and had a conversation with ABC News chief medical correspondent and obesity medicine physician Dr. Jen Ashton.
Winfrey's WeightWatchers special also included conversations with Rebel Wison, Amber Riley, Busy Philipps and more.
"Everybody is just doing the best we can," Winfrey added. "And if they are happy with the choices that they are making, you ought to be happy with it too."

“And finally, my last and favorite choice is a man I can’t stop talking about in my rallies, It’s the late great Hannibal Lector,” Johnson’s near pitch perfect Trump announced as a very wide eyed SNL featured player Michael Longfellow was wheeled in as the Silence of the Lambs killer played to Oscar winning glory by Anthony Hopkins . “There he is, I keep calling his late, great even though he’s not dead, he’s not great and he’s not real, but I think you’d really scare everybody at the border right?”
Of course, part of Johnson’s genius at nailing Trump is how he captures the 77-year-old Art of the Deal author’s insecurities as much as his bravado. A dual impression snagged in its totality with the near throwaway lines of “get him out of here, he’s giving me Pence vibes. I don’t like this.”

After a season of more misses that hits with the cold open, SNL choose well with Johnson’s Trump and the VP walk of shame. “The late, great Hannibal Lecter is a wonderful man,” the real Trump told his Garden State crowd on . “He oftentimes would have a friend for dinner. The 49 th season finale of “Saturday Night Live” opened with James Austin Johnson as Donald Trump speaking at the barricades of a Manhattan courthouse, in a nod to Trump’s ongoing legal woes amid his presidential campaign.

Making fun of Trump’s sexist comments about women (and how he once said Heidi Klum is “no longer a 10”), Johnson, as Trump says of a juror at his trial, “They call her juror 9, but to me, she’s like a six, baby.”
Johnson’s Trump then introduced three of his potential VP candidates. “We love to say ‘VP’, like ‘Veep’ with Elaine from ‘Seinfeld.’ She can’t dance!” He says he won’t announce his VP just yet. “In many ways, it will be determined by the winner of the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight.” Trump says he’s invited a few people from “my short bus––I mean my shortlist.”
He brings out South Carolina Governor Tim Scott (played by Devon Walker). “I’m here to help Trump win the Black vote,” he says. Trump adds, “I’m more popular than you among the Blacks, which is really saying something.” Walker, as Scott says, “Black people have called my support humiliating, but trust me, I am my own man!”
Finally, he wheels out his final VP pick, “The late great Hannibal Lecter!” Trump says, as Mikey Day as Hannibal Lecter is wheeled out in an orange jumpsuit and wearing the famous mask. “I think he’d really scare everybody at the border. “Get him out of here, he’s giving me Pence vibes,” says Trump, as Hannibal Lecter is then wheeled away.
Trump says it’s going to be “the summer of Trump. You’re gonna get that Trump espresso,” he sings in a reference to a Sabrina Carpenter song. Johnson, as Trump says he’ll be selling more Trump Bibles as well, along with a “Trump Torah.”
Trump finishes the cold open shouting, “In the words of my mentor, the late great Hannibal Lecter, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
This week’s “ SNL ” host is actor Jake Gyllenhaal, and Sabrina Carpenter stars as the week’s musical guest.

Dabney Coleman: Where to Stream His Best Movies and TV Shows
Coleman’s characters frequently displayed the kind of antagonistic demeanor familiar to anyone who has ever dealt with a bad boss or a disgruntled customer.

By Noel Murray
The veteran character actor Dabney Coleman died Thursday at 92. Coleman began appearing in movies and TV series in the 1960s, when he was in his early 30s, and from the beginning, he had the look and the attitude of a grumpy middle-aged man.
For most of his career — except on those rare occasions when he got to play a lead role — Coleman’s job was to pop in for a scene or two to growl and grumble in a manner that was generally both humorous and more than a little scary. He reliably brought the kind of antagonistic energy familiar to anyone who has ever dealt with a bad boss or a disgruntled customer.
Much of Coleman’s best TV work — like the short-lived sitcoms “Buffalo Bill” and “The Slap Maxwell Story,” and the soap opera parody “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” — aren’t available to stream. And while he had roles in dozens of very good films and TV shows, he was often low in the billing. The seven Coleman performances below, though, are both outstanding and substantial, showcasing his imposing screen presence and ace comic timing.
‘9 to 5’ (1980)
After nearly 20 years in the business, Coleman’s career really took off in the 1980s, when producers started casting him in parts that let him hang around onscreen a little longer. He had his breakout performance in this hit comedy, which stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton as secretaries who try to overcome corporate sexism by imprisoning their boss. Coleman plays that piggish executive, whose disrespect for women in general (and these three employees in particular) is so infuriating to watch that audiences couldn’t wait to see him get his comeuppance.

‘On Golden Pond’ (1981)
Coleman teamed again with Jane Fonda a year later for an Oscar-winning big-screen adaptation of Ernest Thompson’s play “On Golden Pond,” a passion project for the actress, who wanted to work with her aging father, Henry Fonda. Coleman only has a small part in the film, playing Bill, the fiancé of Jane Fonda’s character Chelsea, the estranged daughter of Henry Fonda’s prickly Norman. Coleman gets to hit some of his usual sour notes when Bill stands up to Norman’s passive-aggressive bullying, but he’s not the villain of the story this time. He’s a decent man who just won’t be pushed too far, a Coleman character shown in a somewhat more flattering light.

‘Tootsie’ (1982)
Like “9 to 5,” this is a zeitgeist-grabbing comedy about endemic sexism in an American cultural institution. But for once, Coleman’s character isn’t the biggest chauvinist in the room. He plays Ron, a soap opera director trying to get the best from his new star, Dorothy Michaels (Dustin Hoffman) — who is actually a struggling New York theater actor named Michael Dorsey posing as a woman and dealing with the handsiness of his blustery co-star John Van Horn (George Gaynes). Ron’s no-nonsense attitude and wry asides amount to only one piece of the film’s fast-paced, intricate comic rhythms. But it is an important piece, and Coleman is as much of a pro as the character he’s playing, hitting his beats with precision.

‘WarGames’ (1983)
Whenever Coleman wasn’t playing an out-and-out jerk (or a misunderstood jerk, as was the case with “Buffalo Bill” and “Slap Maxwell”), he often took on the role of a snappish authority figure. The richest of those performances came in this Cold War thriller. Coleman played Dr. John McKittrick, an engineer keeping an eye out for Soviet missile attacks at NORAD. When a curious teenage hacker (Matthew Broderick) accidentally triggers a simulated thermonuclear war that threatens to go global, McKittrick’s distrust of this kid runs the risk of making the situation worse. The surly Coleman perfectly embodies the kind of well-meaning bureaucracy that may not be able to adapt in time to stave off an apocalypse.
Stream it on Max ; rent or buy it on Amazon Prime Video , Apple TV , Google Play or YouTube .
‘Columbo and the Murder of a Rock Star’ (1991)
Coleman first appeared in “Columbo” in the 1973 episode “Double Shock,” in which he played a Los Angeles detective who appears in just a few scenes. By 1991, though, he had become a big enough name to be one of the show’s guest villains: a shady attorney who murders his duplicitous girlfriend and frames her lover. Coleman’s character is one of those “Columbo” killers who gets easily irritated by the relentlessness of the rumpled lieutenant (Peter Falk), making it all the more entertaining as his clever alibi gets gradually peeled away.
Stream it on Peacock or Tubi .
‘The Guardian’ (2001-04)
Later in his career, Coleman landed a plum role in this CBS drama, playing a respected lawyer trying to reestablish a relationship with his wayward son, Nick (Simon Baker), a lawyer who has been sentenced to work with children as part of his community service for a drug offense. It is a complicated character, allowing Coleman to show a softer side while still having plenty of opportunities to bark orders and deliver withering wisecracks.
Stream it on Paramount+ ; buy it on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV .
‘Boardwalk Empire’ (2010-11)
Coleman had another late-career highlight with this HBO period crime drama, which he guest starred on throughout its first two seasons. He played Commodore Louis Kaestner, an early 20th century Atlantic City politician and business mogul who remains a puppet-master well into the Prohibition era, even as his protégés battle each other for power. Coleman plays the character as a frail but formidable man who relies on the city’s collective memory of all that he built — and everyone he hurt — to maintain control. “Boardwalk Empire” viewers didn’t need to see the Commodore in his heyday in order to understand why so many of the show’s antiheroes were still scared of him. To the end, Coleman could command attention and make people nervous.
