Frequently asked questions

Most of the questions we’re asked you can find below. let us know if you can’t find an answer to yours..

We have charter options for all abilities. To bareboat charter with us, you will be required to complete and submit the Marine Experience Bio. We take many attributes into consideration when deciding if a bareboat charter request has the qualifications needed. Having previous or current ownership of a vessel of similar size or larger is heavily factored. Certification from a reputable power vessel training facility. Past history and documentation of any previous charters of a watercraft. If you possess a USCG Merchant Mariner license, STCW or an RYA certification. It is imperative that we and you are comfortable and competent to handle the vessel in a responsible and safe manner for vessel and crew safety.

We have two other charter options that do not require the experience to bareboat charter. Check out the Pilot Charters and Captained Charters. Pilot charters are very accommodating as the Captain vacates the vessel for the evening and returns the next morning to carry on to your next destination. Your left to manage the vessels systems and experience the social and camaraderie of trawler and marina life. A Captain charter differs as the Captain stays with you the entire charter.

The Marine Exam Ride is for first time charter clients and clients desiring to move up in vessel size to demonstrate proficiency of knowledge and skill to safely and competently skipper the chartered vessel.

We’ve included most of the ancillary costs typically associated with chartering. Diesel fuel, pump out, early board, and late departure, linens for each stateroom and head, and sundries are included with all bareboat charters.  Pilot charters include transportation to and from the vessel daily and slip fees.  Captain charters include slip fees as no transportation is needed as they stay aboard.

We do not provide provisioning.  We have a nice grocery store within a mile of our facility and other specialty stores not far away if desired.  We have a few solutions if provisioning is desired.

Traverse City is home to  Cherry Capital Airport  and serviced by Delta, American, United, and Allegiant. Most connections are through Detroit and Chicago.  There are direct flights from Minneapolis, JFK and Atlanta during the summer months. Check with your preferred carrier for additional information.  CCA is 10 minutes from our facility.

If you plan to charter with us as the designated Captain, please complete the MEB.

G etting Ready to Celebrate a New Beginning!

We are getting there! As we get closer to reopening our Charter and School operations we want to thank everyone again for all the support over the last nine months! As we said right after the storm we look forward to celebrating our 40th Anniversary with all of you later this year and throughout 2024 and we are getting closer to that goal! We plan to have a very much scaled-down operation returning by October/ November, 2023! We can't wait to see all of you again. Please keep us in mind when you make any future boating plans!

Thank you for your patience and understanding!  We look forward to seeing you ALL again soon!

Update:  April, 2023

Thank you all for your continued prayers and support!  As I wrote in January, we are in the process of rebuilding and making great progress!  We will be adding a new vessel to the fleet on May 1, 2023!  The Silverton 43 is a gorgeous double-cabin, double-head motor yacht with twin engines and generator.  She is beautifully decorated and will please the entire crew when you take her out on your next charter!  We will be posting photos, rates an availability in late April.  Stay tuned!

We will also be adding several other new yachts to the fleet in the months ahead and will be sending out "Berth Announcements" as those vessels join our program.  We also have several boats that were in the fleet prior to the storm that are undergoing repairs and should be ready to cruise by Fall, 2023!

As soon as we have boats available we will again begin to offer our sail and power courses.  As we stated earlier this year, we plan to be up and running to celebrate our 40th Anniversary in 2024.  Please join us then!

Making it Home: Navigating the Road to Recovery

I have been watching various interviews with Benjamin Hall, the Fox News reporter who was almost killed in Ukraine one year ago when several bombs hit the car that he and his colleagues were riding in. His two colleagues died and Benjamin sustained serious injuries, including losing one leg and his foot on the other leg. He has a new book out now entitled: “SAVED: A War Reporter's Mission to Make it Home”.

In the book he describes what happened to him, gives kudos to the people who helped get him to safety following the blast and his journey through recovery and finally making it home to his family. Each time I have heard Ben speak about his experience I have been moved by his courage, humility and positive attitude. What kept him going? He says that from the moments after the attack and all through his surgeries (at least 20 so far) he just kept his focus on going home. "Home" for him was back to England to be with his wife and three young daughters ages 3, 5 and 7! His strength and his optimism have inspired me even more to be grateful for all that we have been through the last six months after surviving Hurricane Ian.

While we lost our physical home, we have been on a journey to make it to a spiritual "home," if you will. That home would be a place of peace knowing that we had done everything we could to repair, renew and rebuild. How can we be grateful for a disaster that took our home, our cars, our boats and severely damaged our business? First of all, we survived! We, along with friends who were staying with us, all of our pets and our neighbors, emerged the day after the storm with stories to tell, but only a few scrapes and scratches. Moreover, we have a new appreciation for simplifying our life by doing without all the "stuff" we thought we needed to be happy.

Since September 28, 2022 there have been many extremely difficult and frustrating moments working through the repairing, replacing and rebuilding process to be sure. However, through the pain and heartache we have received many blessings that we never expected. We received cards and emails of support as well as donations to our GoFundMe page from friends as well as from people we don't even know. As I tell everyone who has reached out to us, their support has meant more that they know.

Six months ago I could not have imagined where the road from this disaster would take us. Now that we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel we are once again excited about the future. Having weathered the physical, mental and emotional storms that the Hurricane brought we know now that there is nothing we can't overcome. Of course there are many more challenges ahead, but we have faith that the good will outweigh the bad as we move forward. Personally, I no longer listen to the naysayers. Those are the people who bring only negative energy into our world. By focusing on the positive steps forward we are ensuring that we stay motivated toward reaching our goals and rebuilding our lives. My motto throughout this process has been to "take a step forward each week." There were times when those positive steps were few and far between; however, each time we were successful we celebrated! Whether it was closing out one insurance claim, purchasing a car or finally getting our office phones repaired as we did just last week, each victory was a step closer to being "home."

Everyone goes through difficult times in their life. We are not the only ones who have faced a disaster like a hurricane. There are thousands of people dealing with their own "storms" each and every day. Whether you are facing an illness, the death of a loved one, a natural disaster or anything else you can navigate your way home through hard work and a positive attitude. Getting "home" may mean different things to different people. Some people may be working toward better health or a better relationship or even more financial security. If you are facing challenges in your life, continue to navigate the road to recovery with a hard work and a positive attitude and you will make it "home" as well.

A New Year's Resolution:  Recover, Rebuild and Reopen!

This is a New Year like no other at Southwest Florida Yachts. This is typically the time when we all make those resolutions to lose weight, exercise more, read more books or spend more time with family. For all of us here at SFY our Resolution is much simpler. Our resolution involves the three R's - Recover, Rebuild and Reopen!

More than 90 days after the storm we are still in the Recovery mode. Many of us are still working with insurance companies, working to save property and belongings and trying to put the infrastructure of our lives back together such as shelter, cars, phones and computers to name a few. We are still waiting for sunken boats to be removed and for mounds of debris to be hauled away. It is no easy task to recover from the worst Hurricane Florida has ever seen and I know that many of you may not understand the scope of the devastation in our area. Nor do some people realize that the recovery continues long after the photos fade from the pages of the newspapers and the nightly news.

Personally I have been shocked by some of the negative email comments that I have received. I won't share any of those posts here as this is a message of Hope for the future. Thankfully, the overwhelming majority of you have offered your kind words of support to all of us at SFY. However, a small minority have used email and social media to criticize us for the time it is taking to rebuild and reopen. As hurtful as it is to see these comments, I try to focus on the positive.

We have worked every day since September 28, 2022 to put one foot in front of the other and move forward both personally and professionally. It only takes a few hours to lose everything in your life; however, I now know that it can take months and perhaps years to work through the recovery process.

Nothing about this disaster has been easy and I would not wish such devastation on anyone. Make no mistake however; this is not about gaining sympathy for our plight. As I write this, tornados have killed many people in the South and have destroyed communities. Disastrous weather has impacted the West Coast for weeks now with flooding, mudslides and wind damage. The Northeast recently experienced life-threatening conditions during a blizzard and record snowfall. We are not the only ones who have ever suffered from a disaster and will not be the last.

The second "R" of our Resolution is for Rebuilding. We have already begun the rebuilding process in earnest. Our Nautical Boutique opened on November 20, 2022, but without flooring. Sometimes you have to improvise! Water intrusion made it necessary to take up our floors, but fortunately for us cement floors are very popular these days! In fact, most customers do not even notice the missing laminate flooring. They are just happy that we are open! While our Charter and School operations have not reopened; we hope to have our office operational soon. It has taken much longer than expected to put all of the pieces of the business back together. I may have been overly optimistic when I said that we would be open by now. Until one goes through something like this I don't think anyone could imagine time, energy and resources that it takes to successfully chart a course to a brighter future. We are navigating our way forward every day!

We are also working to Rebuild our fleet! As many of you know, two vessels sank and many others have varying degrees of damage. Some of the yachts we hope to have back in service within months; however, for others the repairs will take longer. As SOON as we have a better handle on the repair timeline we will let everyone know which boats will be back and when they will be in service. You can imagine how overloaded the repair facilities are now with thousands of vessels needing work. We are still working through the repair process.

Finally, we do plan to Reopen! As we said right after the storm we look forward to celebrating our 40th Anniversary with all of you later this year and throughout 2024! We can't wait to see all of you again and we want to thank you in advance for supporting us with your future boating plans. Please watch our website for details on booking boats for charters and classes!

We know the road ahead will continue to be challenging, but we are committed to coming back better than ever!

Dear Captain Hanna, aka Jennifer, You and your team are about to get underway for a final trip. Rather than write a more formal letter, I offer this quick email. Besides, my letters usually look more like a prescription for penicillin, given my handwriting. We had a wonderful time, from your exuberant reception to our sad departure. You and your staff worked so hard to assure our every comfort and pleasure. Jamal was flawless, “shipshape”, and so, so comfortable. Kristen’s efforts to please us, especially given some of dietary restrictions, was noteworthy and extraordinarily tasteful. She is remarkable. And Cloe and Zane: always about the yacht assuring that we were without need. And such nice, nice individuals. And we loved the “uniforms”. And, then there was you. I have been about yachts for 50 years; yes, 50. I have been aboard 10 chartered yachts with captains and crew. I know expertise. You are beyond remarkable. We felt very safe and enjoyed seeing you “in action”. Then there was your hospitality. Charming. Quite charming. And, yes, we were sad to leave. All to say, we all had a marvelous time. I speak for everyone, even Gordon. And Joanne and I look forward to returning, likely with family, (when I able to gain consensus, somewhat like gaining world peace). Thank you. Thank you. You and your crew: lovely and handsome, professional, personable, attentive, and sensitive.
Jennifer Now that I’m back in my hectic and demanding world of lawyer, mediator and ministerial issues, it makes me feel even more thankful for the wonderful time we had with you and your terrific crew. You are all so good at what you do that you create an atmosphere on Jamal that anyone can truly enjoy. As I’ve said, God has given you such magnificent gifts to use in God’s service and that is exactly what you do. I thank you for your giving of those gifts to me, my wife and my good friends. I’m looking forward to being blessed with another magnificent experience next year. May God’s blessings come to you, Bailey and Kristen.
Good Morning, We all made it home with flight delays, locked baggage compartments and dead car batteries, but most of all we miss you and the girls! You made our trip the best we have ever experienced and while exchanging e-mails this morning we all want to go back and see you, Misty, Lena and Campbell! Words can’t express our gratitude or do justice to the great time we had on the cruise, but as I said when we talked on the bridge, the people of the Jamal are absolutely the best we could have ever hoped for…… We can’t wait for you to visit us! Safe travels, we love you all!
Hi Jim, I can’t begin to tell you how much fun everyone had on the charter. I told Jennifer that after seeing some of the photos, you probably wished you were on the charter, too! The weather was incredible, the crew was over the top in service & professional skills and Jamal was a real treat. You certainly did a great job on the design. Sorry it didn’t work to meet you. It would have been a real pleasure. You must be very proud of Jennifer, she is such a professional. You got a real winner in Kari. Jennifer & Lenore were very pleasantly surprised at how well she performed and how well she fit in with everyone. Each day I would think it couldn’t get any better, but it did.I’ll probably plan on this again next year.Have a fun time yourself this week. All the best and thanks again.
Of all the journeys I have taken, this one has to be one of the best! A memorable time spent in the company of old and new friends. Jim, you are a great skipper and a most interesting man! We enjoyed your thought provoking questions at dinner and felt better for the laughter many of them provided! Sally, you are a wonder! As a chef, you excel but as a person, you are unmated. What a lot we learned from you! We hope you have a wonderful summer of cruising. We will thank of you often and wish we were sharing the moment with you. Thank you so much! Love,
Jim thanks for the opportunity to cruise with you. There is much to remember and remember I will. From the bears and whales, to the dolphins and eagles, to quiet bays and a pod of Orcas, this was simply a great trip. Not one day of rain and only about 4 hours of rough seas, how did you do it? It was an added bonus to help you and Sally celebrate your birthday. Thanks for letting us play with all the toys and drive the boat around logs. Wishing you a summer of sunshine and smooth seas, and love and laughter as we have known these past 10 days. Thanks,
Dear Jim, Fran & Sally, We have had a most fantastic cruise with a most generous Captain. Sally in the galley had the most satisfying food of any cruise I have been on. The sea lions and seals were great to watch and the whales put on a fine show, with their fluking and blowing. The scenery was awesome. The sailing was smooth. I will never go on a large cruise ship again. This is the only way to go on a vacation.
Dear Jennifer, Fran & Sally, This was the best vacation! So relaxing and beautiful! Thank you for everything and especially teaching me the “Jamaican” wave!
Jon, Jim, Sally, Wally, & Frani Wani, What a wonderful wonderful holiday and an adventure beyond imagination. Every day something new and fun. Jen, you have to be the most wonderful, big-hearted, talented Captain ever. We are so lucky to have Lenora as our chef. Not only is she the very best at her skill, shes loving, kind, and joyful. Maureen has been an absolute doll with her sweet smiles and darling personality. Thank you all so much!
Dear Jen, Maureen & Lenore, We thank you very much for this wonderful experience. You all will have a very special place in our hearts. You do this job so very well, each of you.
Den Jen, Mo, and Sally, Theres nothing I could write that would express how truly wonderful this trip on Jamal has been. The itinerary you laid out was extraordinary, from the whale watching to the quaint harbors, but the best of all was the opportunity to spend time with three amazing women and the Jamalians, of course! Also, special thanks to Sally for forever raising our expectations of great food! I hope we all meet again! Thanks for sharing your love of Jamal and the Pacific NW with us!
Awesome sights and mtns, waterfalls, glaciers Lots of wildlife and bears, sea lions, whales, eagles Adventures on shore and Steely Dan, hot springs, lakes, wild flowers, bear poop Sensational Sensations of the Senses and Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners Kindest Crew!!! and Jim and Corinne & Sally Jo Among friends while making memories. e of Jamal and the Pacific NW with us!
Well, this is Day 5 for my week long adventure on the Jamal. Grandpa & Grandma will still be with all of you for a week after we leave. Trent & I, (newlyweds), have had the most spectacular time with all of you. Our crew, Captain Jen, Kathy (Kiki) & Sally Wally. You have made this trip a dream come true for us. We came here to relax before our big day, & we have definitely accomplished that. It was above & beyond anything we could have imagined! Alaska is beautiful & breath-taking, but not half as beautiful & breath-taking as you three ladies. The hospitality, amazing, the food, outstanding, the memories, forever! The generosity of our Captain, even though she was on a schedule, was perfect. She knew how badly I, (Allie), wanted to see whales. She found them & took the time out for us to enjoy them. I shall never forget her for that; I will never forget any of the crew. They will be forever in our hearts and I truly wish they could be at our wedding. Thank you so much for your kindnesses. Jen and Dont ever change! Your bubbly nature is infectious! I love it! Kathy (Kiki) and Great child-naming skills. Great taste! Love ya! Sally Wally and We love you! You are the gentlest, sweetest woman we have ever met! All of you will be forever remember, forever loved!
Sensational sights of whales, glaciers, and bears have made this voyage on the Jamal the most fantastic way to see Alaska. Taking those narrow passages and hearing the thunderous crack of the glaciers remains for me the highlight of the trip. Thanks to you, Jennifer, we have seen as much of Alaska as possible in a short time. You took us to waterfalls, sea lions, warm & hot springs and superbly maneuvered the boat to sight whales. Travel in tandem with DK, Stacy and Megan proved to be fortuitous, with them some of our group went fishing and even saw bears in action. And, Jen, your crew of Sally, Sally Jo, and Cathy went out of their way at all times to make us extremely comfortable, well fed, and entertained. You have all enriched my life and I will miss you. Alaska will be here if we ever decide to return, but we would be lacking something if we didnt see you again.
Sally, Jen, Sally-Jo (Cathy) & Cathy (Kiki) We Love you ladies and and had an absolutely awesome time! Highlights of course were: Sallys incredible meals, whale-watching, kayaking, glacier watching & just being here! You ladies are the BEST and we love you all!
My Dears, Beautiful Jamalian Girls, well Women really, I or we love you all. This trip to British Columbia was amazing. I loved every minute of it. From swimming in the lake to cruising all day. I wouldnt change a thing. Not to mention the amazing food and crew on board. Sally, you are so sweet and an amazing cook , undeniable the sweetest, most patient woman I have ever met and I am a better person for knowing you. Fran, we had so much fun talking about random things and Im glad I have met you, you are an amazing person. Captain Jennifer, he he, what can I say, your funny, sweet and serious all at the same time, just so fun to be around. I would have never dreamed of a better trip and better people to spend it with. God bless you and stay safe. Your up and coming. Love always,
Fred & I thank you for a wonderful cruise. This is such a special boat and everyone has been so good to us. We definantly look forward to sailing with you again. Love,
This trip was everything we hoped for and and more! Thank you for a memorable week

From the fine entry to the wineglass transom, Kadey-Krogen’s Pure Full Displacement hull design uses full end-to-end symmetry to provide a softer ride with less pounding, better tracking in a following sea, and a safer and more comfortable ride.

A low displacement-to-length ratio allows us to drive the hull through the water easily, making the most of the power on board, with lighter, lower-horsepower engines further reducing weight and improving efficiency.

Having a yacht that can cross oceans means more than just efficiency. The hull and components must hold up in those conditions, and contribute to the experience. Every aspect of Kadey-Krogen trawlers is carefully considered to meet expectations.

About Trawler Yacht Charter

Make an unforgettable sea holiday with the spaciousness and luxury equipment provided by Trawler yacht charters . Compared to other yacht models, trawler yachts provide much larger areas and much more luxurious and comfortable living spaces. Trawler yachts are designed in three floors on top of each other as lower, main and upper decks. Cabins are located on each deck. In this way, trawler yachts have cabins far from each other, isolated and have more personal living spaces. Kaş, Fethiye, Göcek, Marmaris or Bodrum based trawler yachts that we offer to your liking can appeal to all kinds of budgets with various models. Trawler yachts with main hull lengths ranging from fifteen to thirty metres can have a minimum of two and a maximum of six cabins. The most important feature that distinguishes trawler yachts from a sailyacht, catamaran or motor yacht is width.

These large areas provide engineers with the opportunity to design cabins and other areas with very stylish and luxurious wood materials and luxury furniture. The cabins, showers and toilets of a luxury trawler yacht are much larger than a luxury hotel room. It will be enough to contact us to rent the most suitable trawler yacht for your budget at the best prices.

What is Trawler Yacht?

Let’s start by introducing the yacht model that started today’s trawler yacht charter sector. Scandinavian-style fishing yachts, which are mostly seen in the North Seas, are called trawlers. These yachts, designed to pull the net with slow cruising, have long, high and balanced body structures. Their main decks are designed very long and wide in order to catch and take on board a large number and size of fish. The lower and upper decks where the crew is accommodated are also very wide. Tourism investors who want to use the width of these fishing yachts have redesigned these yachts instead of producing new yachts. They have renewed their hulls and equipped their interiors with luxury equipment and cabins.

In our country, recreational trawler yachts have emerged not by redesigning old fishing yachts but by building them from scratch in shipyards. When you look at the form, that is, the hull of the recreational trawler yachts we offer you, you see the characteristic hull features of fishing trawler yachts. As soon as you step on the yachts, you are greeted by a huge swimming platform, decks, saloon, cabin and galley. Since they are designed from scratch for luxury service, trawler yachts have dazzling workmanship in cabins and every point.

Route Options with Trawler Yachts

The trawler yachts in our fleet can start their tours from Fethiye, Göcek, Marmaris and Bodrum according to availability. In our tours starting from Fethiye, Gocek bays or Kekova trip is made. If you start your tour from Göcek, you can spend time only in Göcek bays. There are about thirty bays in Göcek. Marmaris also provides a sufficient route for a one-week tour with its huge peninsula and bays around this peninsula. In your Bodrum tour, you can sail the Gulf of Gökova. You can choose the most ideal route for your trawler yacht charter tour with our support.

Trawler yachts have a slower cruising speed than motor yachts. For this reason, they do not have the ability to change too many places in a short time like motor yachts. It would be logical to prefer close bays on a one-week tour. On two or three-week tours, of course, it would make sense to go to more distant points. Fethiye Gocek is approximately one hour by trawler yacht. Göcek Marmaris is approximately five hours. Marmaris to Bodrum can take up to twelve hours. It would be logical to create a route taking these distances into account. Long voyages can be tiring and boring. It would be the ideal choice to leave it to our expert team to choose the most ideal route according to your rental period.

Our Majestictrawlercharter company offers you unforgettable holidays with Turkey luxury trawler yacht charter services. Our trawler boats are waiting for you with their experienced crew services, luxurious designs and huge living spaces. Enjoy your own spacious living spaces that you will not see in any other yacht model. Reach the beauties of Fethiye, Göcek, Marmaris, Bodrum and the Greek Islands bays with the most comfortable Turkey luxury trawler yachts. Luxury trawler yachtsin Turkey, which bring a new style to the luxury yacht rental sector, are our own production and are designed to fully meet your demands. Luxury and comfort features are found on every deck. Dining tables, luxury hotel-like cabins, bars and a large swimming platform are the characteristic features of Turkey luxury trawler yachts . For Turkey luxury yacht charter services on the sea, simply contact our expert team.

Three Great Trawler Trips

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

In today’s hectic times, comfort is a major concern and leisure time has paramount importance. All the more reason to cruise aboard a traditional trawler. These long-legged motoryachts allow time for enjoying the scenery, all the while providing a spacious home-away-from-home for family and friends.

If you’ve got the urge to go, these well-traveled routes will not disappoint.

Fernandina Beach to Bermuda

After telling a few friends I was taking a week off for an 870-mile cruise from Fernandina Beach, Florida, to Bermuda, typical responses were, “What type of sailboat? “What race?

My eager reply was the 37-foot Mirage Navigator Semper Fi -a salty-looking trawler yacht built in Gainesville, Florida. After several sailboat trips from New England to Bermuda, making headsail changes at 3 a.m. while thrashing around on the foredeck, I was looking forward to the more relaxed pace of cruising on a well-found passagemaker.

Preparation aside, a passage to Bermuda from the East Coast will average four to six days on a well-found trawler. This is a perfect amount of time to slip into the routine and rhythm of an offshore passage, substituting weather reports and good books for cell phones and morning meetings.

Because this trip doesn’t require extensive work in the way of plotting a course, one of its most vital aspects is proper weather forecasting. For this reason, a summer trip is preferable and offers less chance of high winds associated with early winter or late spring storms. It will be crucial that you monitor the tropical storm forecast, since a summer trip means a crossing during hurricane season. Pick a weather window with an ample fudge factor on the end of the trip, and calculate worst-case speed scenarios.

You’ll also need to be able to monitor weather en route. Several weather forecast services can keep you informed, and satellite downloads are an option as long as you plan a backup. Mirage President Ken Fickett provided weather updates via satellite phone at set times during our trip and tracked our progress, providing an added element of safety. With the exception of a few beam seas on our fourth day, the water lay flat, like a vast plane that extended miles and miles.

Of course, a good crew that can troubleshoot, forecast weather and operate self-sufficiently is important, but just as important is having a seaworthy trawler that is properly equipped. Before setting out, know how your boat handles in a variety of sea conditions. How is the boat going to enter an 8-foot head sea? Does she handle large beam swells well, or does her after end get slammed? An uncomfortable motion can be unsafe or, more likely, damn annoying after several days. Consider the amount of exposed glass on your boat and her ability to run with the weather if need be.

Most important, this trip requires a boat with the range to reach Bermuda with reserves should weather force you to extend your time at sea.

We arrived in Bermuda after just five days, well rested with clean laundry, full bellies and not one 3 a.m. sail change.

Inside Passage

People who refer to the Inside Passage are generally speaking of the roughly 1,100 nautical miles just above the U.S./Canadian border around Victoria or Vancouver, British Columbia, that continues to Skagway, Alaska. Like Norway’s eastern coast, the shoreline of British Columbia and Alaska is serrated and rough, with literally thousands of fjords that are deep (more than 1,000 feet) and long (more than 100 miles), plus countless islands. Snowcapped canyons, glaciers, and small fishing and lumber villages make for a beautifully diverse trip.

Most of the supplies for the villages are brought in by sea, so cruisers need to be prepared with provisions and gear. Fuel is readily available at fairly short intervals.

A round-trip voyage can be made in one month, but two would be better. Needless to say, this is a summer-only trip. Winter can be appalling. Many owners do the cruise in come-and-go fashion: taking the boat for a few weeks, leaving it to fly home (easy via seaplanes), returning to cruise another segment. Exploring any of the inlets adds mileage. Princess Louisa Inlet, for instance, ups the distance by 100 miles.

There are three basic segments to the trip. Starting at Victoria or Vancouver, the first leg runs roughly 250 miles inside the protection of Vancouver Island to Cape Caution. This is the Straits of Georgia. By and large, it is benign because the bulk of Vancouver protects the passage from the ferocity of North Pacific weather, but it can be downright nasty. There is really no place where you wouldn’t want to watch the weather charts and keep a couple of good protected anchorages in mind. The first leg also has the famed Princess Louisa Inlet with Chatterbox Falls at the innermost end, but you have to go through the entrance to the fjord at slack water. The currents run up to 12 knots as 40 miles of fjord empties or fills through a narrow pass.

The second leg is from the end of Vancouver Island and Cape Caution to Ketchikan. At first, there is an expanse of unprotected water, so watch the weather carefully. Hecate Strait can be fearsome, but most skippers wind through the usually calm passages with good protection from the dozens of islands.

The third leg is Ketchikan to Juneau, again winding through islands and inside Prince of Wales Island, and the scenery includes everything from glaciers to rain forests, dotted with lumber towns.

Juneau is the capital, and most cruisers who make it this far continue north another 100 miles to Skagway, where gold miners once set out for the Yukon territories. Rather than go straight to Skagway, it’s well worth a 200-mile side trip to explore Glacier Bay, where you can chip ice for your cocktails from glaciers millennia old and where the scenery is truly spectacular.

Florida to St. Thomas, USVI

The Virgin Islands have long been a popular choice for cruising sailors looking for a season of trade wind breezes, tropical sunsets, fruity drinks and stunning scenery. Often though, many view the nearly 1,000-nautical mile trip from Florida to St. Thomas as daunting and avoid venturing beyond the Bahamas. True, this trip has obstacles and requires proper planning and a knowledgeable skipper, but it’s worth the effort thanks to good fuel stops, plentiful hurricane holes and the many rewards of the Virgin Islands cruising season.

Your choices in planning this trip depend on your boat, its fuel consumption rate, the speed you wish to cruise and the amount of time you have. Weather is also key: Even when you’re cruising at 20 knots, the blustery trade winds can stir up a head sea that dictates slowing to a more moderate speed. In November and December, the trades are northeast and usually moderate; they increase after January.

The most practiced route and one that offers the bonus of some fine cruising is a passage across the Great Bahama Bank or North West Providence Channel. Assuming your goal is to get to the Virgin Islands quickly, you may wish to bypass the traditional quick hop over to ports of entry such as Bimini and West End. Depending upon your range and the time allotted, options include a layover in Nassau. My preference is to cruise to the Exuma Sound toward the southern end of the chain, making a daylight entry.

South of George Town, fuel management becomes paramount. Between George Town or Rum Cay and the Turks and Caicos chain, there are no simple fuel stopovers. The only options are Clarence Town on Long Island (you have to wait for a truck), Crooked Island (still sketchy for large fill-ups), Mayaguana and Great Inagua. My preference is to head non-stop for about 245 nautical miles from George Town to the Turks and Caicos-if weather allows.

From this point, there are several options; again, your choice depends upon the factors previously mentioned. If you are willing to put up with the often long and, at times, costly clearing-in process, the Dominican Republic offers a few ports for fuel. Today, you need to spend at least a day or two on the island to make the hassle worth your while, but marina development promises to make this a more appealing layover in the next few years.

From there, you’ll begin a coastal cruise along the Dominican Republic coast, past the Mona Passage with a stopover in San Juan and an easy leg to St. Thomas. On average, I’ve completed this passage in about nine days, allowing some time to enjoy the layovers. It is quite possible to make the trip in less time, but doing so is a lot less fun.

If St. Thomas becomes your home base in the Caribbean, you’ll benefit from good flight connections and a yachting infrastructure that can keep your yacht shipshape, even after you head reluctantly back home.
