Anatta (ex Aglaia)

sail yacht aglaia

We dare to go beyond industry standards trough groundbreaking innovations.

Aglaia (ex anatta).

Aglaia is a spectacular 66m sloop-rigged aluminium yacht with low superstructure and a clean deck.

The large sloop rig is all carbon with EC6 rigging and gives a sail area to displacement ratio equivalent to a racing yacht. This Dubois design breaks new grounds in several areas not just the length of this demolition but in the design, engineering, innovation, technique and craftsmanship coming together.

Aglaia is confirmation that at Vitters, it’s kind of fun to do the impossible!

The Aglaia Sail Yacht from Vitters Shipyard

By Adrian Prisca

Updated on August 31, 2017

sail yacht aglaia

We’re used to write a lot about luxurious yachts, but this one is going to be pretty short because we don’t know if we can find the right words to describe this beauty. Built by Vitters Shipyard in the Netherlands, the Aglaia is a 66m sail yacht that’s more than just a luxury cruise, it’s like an art gallery on water.

The yacht’s main sail is actually a 3,600 sqm canvas painting by Magne Furuholmen which actually might make it the largest canvas painting in the world. The sail is hoisted to an 83m carbon mast that’s fused to the deck of the yacht below. Together, the main sail and the technology of the carbon mast could take this sail yacht to speeds comparable to racing yachts.

The Aglaia Sail Yacht comes with a living section with curvy windows that rises above the living quarters below, all laced with fine wood for cruising and relaxing and with luxurious amenities. We’re going to let the photos do the rest of the talking for us.

Unique sail art for 66m Vitters yacht Aglaia

Little is known about the 66m performance sloop Aglaia – but what is known is uniformly exceptional. Her 83m carbon mast is one of the tallest in the world and the largest ever produced by Southern Spars; Dubois designed her with targets such as hoisting the mainsail in less than two minutes and tacking the boat within 30 seconds; and her builder Vitters developed an innovative staysail furler for her.

Suitably for a boat named after the Greek goddess of beauty and splendour, Aglaia is also a gorgeous-looking yacht. Chief among her charms is the painting by Norwegian artist Magne Furuholmen on her Code 1 sail, which at about 3,600m2 (both sides of the 1,787m2 Cuben Fiber sail) is one of the largest fabric paintings in the world.

The owners had a series of Furuholmen pieces on board and after the christening chose to make this art a more integral part of Aglaia ’s DNA – by putting his work on her sail. Furuholmen was given no specific brief and he told the owner he would make no sketches (‘you’re going to have to trust me’).

‘When I got asked to do this particular commission, I decided to take a modern approach to portrait paintings of 100 years ago,’ Furuholmen says from the deck of Aglaia . ‘It’s my interpretation of a history. I try to find an angle that both has a connection to the context in which the work is going to be placed and a connection to that person whom I’m portraying.’

For the artist and musician (Furuholmen was keyboardist and art director of the band Aha ) the ‘natural approach is to find a linguistic point into the situation’. For the sail, he began with the Christian names of the owner’s family, the letters becoming a ‘personal alphabet’ to generate words. With these he created an abstract narrative (in the orange sections) – a family portrait in text.

The final version was produced by the expert sail painters Harris Sailpainting, in Majorca.

Aglaia Sail Yacht by Vitters Shipyard

This 66m sail yacht is more than just a luxury cruiser, it’s a mobile art gallery of sorts.  The Aglaia Sail Yacht by Vitters Shipyard features a 3600 sqm canvas painting by Magne Furuholmen as its primary sail– if you’re counting, that may be the largest canvas painting in the world.  It’s hoisted to 83m carbon mast that is fused to the deck of the yacht below.  Together, the technology of the carbon mast and the art of its main sail yield the power of a racing yacht in a luxury cruising package.  A raised top living section with curvy windows rises above living quarters below, all laced with a fine wood deck for cruising and relaxing alike.  It’s a remarkable ship for its design, technology, power and luxury all at once.

Sailing Yacht ANATTA (ex Ahimsa, Aglaia) is a stunning 66.0m (216'6") vessel, launched by Vitters Shipyard in March 2011. With last refit by STP Shipyard in 2014, hull 3063 superyacht ANATTA features naval architecture by Dubois Naval Architects, whereas her spacious interior was projected by Redman Whiteley Dixon design studio.

The impressive superyacht ANATTA boasts sleek lines with an extended aft and a deep navy hull with teak decks. Her draft is 4.9 m (16ft) keel up / 9.0 m (30ft) keel down, featuring a beam of 10,3 m (190ft). One of Anatta's interesting features is her massive mast. Being a sloop, she requires one very tall and technologically advanced mast, which stands over 80 metres above her deck and even further above the water line. This huge, modern luxury yacht designed by Dubois Naval Architects, also has one of the largest composite rudders created.

ANATTA Specifications

Luxury Sloop ANATTA has racing yacht performance, thanks to her powerful rig, long waterline length, light weight and lifting keel, which when fully extended provides enviable pointing and speed.

Vitters' ANATTA sloop is powered by two C-18 engines of 532kW at 2100 rpm and her total tank capacity is 50,000 litres. She is able to reach a maximum speed of 13 knots.

"One of the most important elements for us at RWD is the personal relationships that we forge with our clients. It is also critical to us to ensure that designing and creating with that RWD partnership is a very, very enjoyable journey. So when visiting our unique studio, this might mean helicoptering in to stay in one of England's very best Country house spa hotels, the nearby Lime Wood, and perhaps enjoying riding in the New Forest, fly-fishing on one of the best chalk streams in the South, all things frankly which have nothing to do with yacht design, but add to the memories of the creation of that yacht. The more pleasurable we can make the whole design experience, the more valuable the journey is." - British superyacht designers Redman Whiteley Dixon.

AGLAIA is a yacht that we know well. She is the second of the Phoenix 77 project, built in the UK for a very experienced owner, and combining great craftsmanship with 21 st century technology and of course she comes with those Rob Humphrey’s slippery lines. Her layout provides for crew aft including a crew mess and access to the engine room and galley. Forward are cabins for owners and guests together with a great main saloon and entertaining cockpit. This also has a protective dodger which is well designed and is perfect for night watches and for extreme heat or cold. She also has a great sailing cockpit aft with direct access from the crew accommodation and a dinghy garage.

For her first owner she was his second Phoenix 77. The structural engineering and hull and deck mouldings were executed by Goss Challenges. She was built using light weight techniques involving the extensive use of Kevlar and carbon laminates. She was then fitted out at Hamble Yacht Services where equipment was positioned for easy service and maintenance having learnt from her earlier sister design to provide a stiffer, lighter, faster yacht, which is easy to maintain. She cruises comfortably at 10 to 12 knots and 250 to 275 nautical mile days are the norm.

After the current owner purchased AGLAIA, she returned to Berthon for a significant refit. It was decided at that time to take AGLAIA back to her component parts and to renew, refinish and totally update. This process has produced what is essentially a 2016 yacht; refit started in 2015 and completed early summer 2016, with all the design and ideas that Rob Humphreys and her first owner developed, yet totally “zero houred” and with the very best of technology, engineering, systems and interior design available today.

The rebuild of AGLAIA took place at Berthon Boat Company and was accomplished over many months. Every system and detail of the yacht was reviewed and updated as needed. The interior was brilliantly reworked with the help of Lola Beuyukian Design to give AGLAIA a comfortable and contemporary feel. Since the refit she has been impeccably maintained.

Below are some of the highlights of this very detailed process:

Please ask us for the video and other material that catalogues this rebuild.

AGLAIA was always an exceptional yacht and she has exceeded her owners’ expectations since delivery. She offers a practical and sea kindly layout and fast, comfortable passage making. The investment that has been made in her means that she is totally ready for serious cruising now. The brief to Berthon was to replace rather than refit any equipment whose reliability they could not guarantee, and this means that there is no further investment now required for her new owner.

The luxury yacht features two double-bed staterooms and a twin. Each of AGLAIA’s staterooms is complete with its own en-suite. She also is able to accommodate up to three crewmembers. During the 2016 refit, the interior of AGLAIA was totally reworked. Her owner commissioned Lola Beuyukian Design to uplift and modernize her classic interior of cherry and teak that was originally designed by Ken Freivokh. The simple finish of the woodwork was satin lacquer.  All head-linings and side-linings were replaced, and all flat surfaces were replaced in Corian.  Upholstery is white “faux leather”. The sole boards in the crew area were replaced and the accommodation sole boards were refinished. Any signs of wear and tear were removed, and she has new fittings for all services from door handles to faucets in stainless steel with stainless steel fiddles to match. All the mattresses were replaced at that time as well as the upholstery which is now in leather and double stitched. As the onboard services were either refurbished or replaced there was an opportunity to make subtle changes for the better use of space. This included all the audio-visual equipment, navigation equipment and audio visual, so there was ample opportunity to take advantage of this to rebuild areas of the yacht to accommodate this new equipment.  She also has all new galley equipment, china, glass, and cutlery. Killer whales attack and sink sailing yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar — again

By Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: May 14, 2024 / 4:54 PM EDT / CBS News

A sailing yacht sunk in the Strait of Gibraltar on Sunday after an unknown number of orcas  slammed into the vessel with two people on board and caused a water leak, officials said. Both crew members were rescued by a passing oil tanker, said Spain's maritime rescue service, marking the latest killer whale attack on a boat in what has become a pattern in recent years.

The incident happened at around 9 a.m. local time in the narrow strait between Spain and Morocco that has become a notorious site of human interactions with pods of killer whales that, for reasons still not fully understood, ram into boats and at times even sink them . In this case, crew members on board the SV Alboran Cognac yacht put out an emergency call for an evacuation after they encountered orcas roughly 14 miles off the coast of Cape Spartel.

The crew members reported feeling blows to the hull of the vessel and rudder, which was damaged by the whales, the rescue service said. The agency's coordination center in Tarifa, on the Spanish side of the Strait of Gibraltar, helped arrange for their evacuation via the tanker MT Lascaux. The tanker was able to collect the crew members from the sinking yacht within the hour, and they disembarked in Gibraltar before 10:30 a.m. They abandoned the SV Alboran Cognac, which proceeded to completely disappear into the ocean.

Anyone sailing through waters from the Gulf of Cádiz in southern Spain and the Strait of Gibraltar, either in a larger motorized vessel or a personal sailing boat, is advised to avoid certain areas that the maritime rescue service marks as potentially dangerous spots for orca interactions. The greatest threats exist between May and August, when officials say that pods of killer whales are most commonly seen in those parts of the Atlantic.

orca-interactions-maritime-rescue.jpg

But previously recorded incidents suggest those dangers may be present at any time. Last October, a Polish boat touring company reported that a pod of orcas had managed to sink one of its yachts after repeatedly slamming into the steering fin for 45 minutes, causing it to leak. Last June, two sailing teams competing in an international race around the world reported frightening scenarios in which multiple orcas rammed into or pushed up against their boats or as they sailed west of Gibraltar.

No one on board any of the vessels was hurt in those encounters, but the documented rise in confrontational behavior has researchers and sailors trying to determine why orcase have attempted to sink or capsize so many boats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.

Some sailors have even resorted to blasting thrash metal music in a bid to deter the apex predators.

Reports of orcas interacting with humans have more than tripled in the last two years or so, according to the research group GTOA, which has documented hundreds of such incidents in the region since 2020. But some of the latest data points to possible changes in the orcas' etiquette, with the group reporting only 26 interactions in the Strait of Gibraltar and Bay of Biscay areas between January and May of this year. That number is 65% lower than the number of interactions recorded in the region over the same months last year, and 40% lower than the average number of interactions recorded in the same months between 2021 and 2023, according to GTOA.

Orcas Sink Another Boat Near Iberia, Worrying Sailors Before Summer

Two people were rescued on Sunday after orcas damaged their boat near the Strait of Gibraltar, where the animals have caused havoc in recent years.

Two orcas are visible just above the surface of a body of water, with a small boat in the background.

By Isabella Kwai

Summer is on the way, meaning that the orcas are out to play near the Strait of Gibraltar — which is bad news for sailors.

Two people were rescued on Sunday after an attack by a group of orcas caused enough damage to sink their boat, according to the Spanish maritime rescue service. It was the fifth such sinking in waters off the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa in recent years.

The Alboran Cognac, a sailing yacht about 50 feet long, was approached by the animals on Sunday morning, some 14 miles off Cape Spartel in Morocco, the rescue service said. Crew members onboard reported that the animals had slammed the hull, damaged the rudder and caused a leak.

A nearby oil tanker quickly maneuvered toward the boat and evacuated the two sailors, who were taken to Gibraltar, the rescue service said. The boat was left adrift, and the Moroccan authorities reported that it eventually sank.

It’s the first boat to sink in those waters this year after an orca-related mishap. A group of orcas that traverse the Strait of Gibraltar and nearby waters has plagued sailors and intrigued marine biologists , who are studying the population. Since 2020, orcas have disrupted dozens of sailing journeys in these high-traffic waters, in some cases slamming vessels hard enough to cause critical damage.

Last November, orcas slammed a yacht’s rudder for 45 minutes, causing its crew to abandon the vessel, which sank near the Tanger Med port.

The group is more likely to appear in the busy lanes around the Gulf of Cadiz and the Strait of Gibraltar between April and August, the Spanish government said in a news release, and sailors have spotted some of the orcas there in recent weeks.

Researchers do not know why the pod is targeting boats, but they have theorized that the behavior is a form of play for the curious apex predators. The interactions have become so frequent that they are now a multinational issue, involving scientists and officials from Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Online, anxious sailors have gathered to share advice on navigating “orca alley,” and biologists are tracking the orcas’ movements and testing methods that could deter them.

In the event of an orca encounter, the government advised in its release, boats should not stop but instead head toward shallower waters near the coast.

But the number of incidents may be declining: Researchers at the Atlantic Orca Working Group said on Monday that the number of orca interactions with boats between January and May had dropped some 40 percent, compared with that of similar periods in the past three years.

“This was a scary moment,” the skipper Jelmer van Beek said at the time. “Three orcas came straight at us and started hitting the rudders. Impressive to see the orcas, beautiful animals, but also a dangerous moment for us as a team.”

The ship that sank after an orca attack last year

While that attack didn’t result in the sinking of the ship, another sailing yacht sank near the Tanger Med port in November, The New York Times wrote. The crew of that ship had to abandon the boat after a group of orcas slammed into the rudder for a whole 45 minutes. (The whales have seemingly been targeting sailboats in particular.)

Researchers don’t know for sure why the whales have been attacking boats, but they think it may be one of the ways the orcas play, the Times said—a pretty dangerous form of amusement, albeit. Others have theorized that it’s a short-term fad among the animals, or that one orca experienced a traumatic event that made it aggressive and other whales began to mimic that behavior. The incidents have become so common in recent years that sailors trade advice online about how to maneuver in the Strait of Gibraltar area, and the Spanish government issued a release that included tips for sailors.

Yacht sinks after latest incident involving orcas in strait of Gibraltar

Vessel measuring 15 metres in length sank after encounter with the animals, Spain’s maritime rescue service reports

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service has said, in the latest in a series of similar incidents involving the animals.

The vessel, Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49ft) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9am local time on Sunday.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before the boat started taking on water. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar. The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of recurring orca rammings around the Gibraltar strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and north-western Spain. Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis”.

According to the research group GT Atlantic Orca, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, but theories include that it is a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to 8 metres in length and weigh up to 6 tonnes as adults.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
