Did you know.

Up until the 20th Century, the River Thames was an important part of the economic lifeblood of the city. Barges would travel up the river daily, carrying important supplies such as timber, wool, foodstuffs and livestock. This includes the stone used to rebuild St Paul’s Cathedral after the 1666 Great Fire of London, which was transported by boat along the River Thames from the Cotswolds to London. Following the growth of road transport in the 20th Century, the River Thames became less economically important.

Nowaday’s if you look out at the river, you’ll spot our hop on hop off cruises showing-off this wonderful city to tourists from all over the world!

40 million up: what does the future hold for London’s Thames Clippers?

This October, London’s river bus operator, MBNA Thames Clippers, celebrated carrying its 40 millionth passenger. What role is the service playing for tourists and commuters, and what steps are being taken to expand the service for the future?

riverboat at london

No picturesque London postcard is complete without the river Thames – the 95-mile long waterway that passes through the nation’s capital and to the North Sea beyond. And over the last two decades, the super-sleek river buses that trundle stoically up and down the river have become an increasingly welcome sight for tourists and commuters.

Since coming into being in 1999, the MBNA Thames Clippers service has moved from a one-boat service to a hardy squadron of 17 catamarans, charting a course from Putney in south-west London to Royal Arsenal Woolwich in the east. Every 20 minutes, a boat sets down at various piers spanning a number of London hotspots, including Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Tower Hill, London Bridge, Westminster and Waterloo.

Recently, the Clippers announced a major milestone: more than 40 million passengers have set foot on the river-buses since the first boat set off nearly 20 years ago.

“If someone had just said to me ‘did you know you are up to your 40 millionth passenger?’ I probably would have looked a bit surprised,” says MBNA Thames Clippers CEO and co-founder Sean Collins. “But actually when it’s been worked out you can see how it’s true.”

Since its inception, Thames Clippers have proven that the river can be an asset for passenger travel, alongside its burgeoning freight successes. But what does the future hold?

Passenger numbers have “ebbed and flowed” on the river, says Collins. However with an increase from around 30,000 annual passengers at launch, to more than four million today, an appetite has definitely developed.

Collins says that the major contributors to the upsurge has been a combination of adding new boats to the fleet, expanding routes and services and the success of both commercial and residential developments alongside the river.

Routes pass through major commercial, residential and leisure hotspots. Tourists, for example, can hop on at Westminster after a good gawk at the Houses of Parliament, and sail eastwards to gawk at Greenwich’s Royal Observatory instead. Battersea Power Station was added to the network in 2017, providing a new stop-off for residents, workers and visitors.

“We’ve had some real key attractions and developments very close to the river that have contributed to driving that footfall – and where we’ve added the capacity, and where we’ve added the routes, the footfall has come running,” says Collins.

Bringing commuters on board

Convincing commuters to come aboard has been a challenge, but Collins says that efforts to improve the riparian areas around piers and information and announcements have borne fruit. Better integration with other services run by Transport for London (TfL), which licenses the Thames Clippers, has also proven beneficial. From November 2009, MBNA Thames Clippers services began to accept Oyster pay-as-you-go and contactless payments across its services, allowing it to dispense with the complex ticketing system that was in place.

Enhancements extend to the ferries themselves. At the end of October, MBNA unveiled the name of its 18 th vessel – the Catamaran Venus Clipper – set to launch in early 2019. The new boat will feature more space and 50 extra seats when compared to its immediate predecessors, the Mercury Clipper and the Jupiter Clipper .

Existing vessels in the fleet have recently had an interior retrofit, but Collins says that boats tend to not deviate too far from the arrangements of the original craft so as to provide “a consistent level of standard” across the fleet.

Thames riverboat services recently came under fire when environmental organisations claimed that more stringent emissions rules for buses and trains had not been reflected on the river. Collins says the service worked with naval architects on a sleeker hull format to reduce the power needed to operate its vessels by up to 20%.

“We can only purchase from the engine suppliers what is on the market and we are making every effort to purchase the suitable engine for our operation with the least impact,” he says.

New waves of development

In October 2019, Clipper services will begin running to the new Royal Wharf, a massive new neighbourhood on the north bank of the Thames being developed by Ballymore and Oxley. Other major housing developments to the east of central London, such as Barking Riverside, could present opportunities for expansion in the future.

“These examples demonstrate the [rate] at which housing is going to develop down the Thames corridor, and as those developments do take place, river transport is obviously going to be a major part [of that],” he says.

“Bridges are going to be a lot less frequent the nearer you get to London because of the width of the river and the size of the ships’ ply. So there is a significant difference in the future to transporting large volumes, if not into central London, onto other mass transit modes.”

Collins says that piers need to receive money to encourage outside investment from companies, or at the very least make sure they have good access channels and are being managed properly. But while private investment in piers has proven a major boon, TfL money could well be running dry.

Fickle finances

At the time of writing, the organisation is suffering a £1bn deficit, bolstered by a freeze on public transport fares introduced by current mayor Sadiq Khan. The delayed opening of Crossrail, London’s multi-billion pound railway project, will reportedly cost £200m – a further squeeze on TfL.

“Without the continued investment in piers and infrastructure, as well as signage and marketing of interchangeability with river against other modes of transport, it will suffer,” says Collins. “Both the Port of London Authority (PLA) and TfL need to recognise the importance of these factors to allow the infrastructure of such services to operate, to meet the customer needs and demands and also achieve the passenger footfall they have set as a target.”

“I think the biggest single thing that TfL can do is include the River line in the tube map – that will really demonstrate to people how the river and other forms of transport can be connected.”

MBNA Thames Clippers is one of many stakeholders participating in the PLA’s Thames Vision , which highlights key targets for the river’s future – one of which is doubling the number of river passengers by 2035. However, Collins says that there needs to be more clearly defined targets to build momentum towards this goal.

“Imagine the number of mayors between now and 2035,” he says. “There should be four yearly targets at the very least that are aligned with the mayoral terms, and that way you can measure how much support has been given to the river in every aspect, and how much the PLA and operators can support them.”

“At the end of the day the vast majority of this infrastructure – both piers and boats out to the west and out to the east – is being delivered by the private sector. There are not many other forms of transport in London having that done. So in these times of financial pinch, we should be looking at the private sector.

“London has this amazing asset and the vast majority of it is heavily underutilised,” Collins concludes. “It needs to be utilised a lot more.”

'Human torso' found in London river belonged to same woman found dead in park eight miles away

H uman remains found in the River Wandle in south London on Tuesday belonged to Sarah Mayhew, a woman from Croydon who police believe was murdered.

Forensic tests were carried out on the torso after the grim discovery in Mitcham and Scotland Yard has confirmed the remains were part of the 38-year-old Ms Mayhew.

Other body parts were found in eight miles away in Croydon last month.

A resident on Rawnsley Avenue on the Wandle told the Standard of the “total shock” at the gruesome find in the family-friendly area.

The 51-year-old woman, originally from Brazil, has lived on the avenue for two decades.

She said: “It’s total shock. Where I am from these horrible things happen a lot, but you don’t expect it here. I got this house because it is in a green area near a river, you really don’t expect this.”

Another resident, Virgil Amponsah, 26, said: “This is crazy you do not expect something like that to be found here. it’s a nice area.”

A Scotland Yard statement said: "At 14:18hrs on Tuesday, 21 May, police were called to Rawnsley Avenue, Mitcham after human remains were found in a river by contractors carrying out cleaning work.

"Officers attended and a crime scene was established. Following examination of the remains, detectives informed the family of Sarah of this development.

"They continue to be supported by specially trained officers."

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, who is leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts remain with Sarah’s family. We will continue to provide our support as our investigation progresses.

“I expect my officers to remain in the area for some time as they carry out important work at the scene.

“Two people arrested, who were known to Sarah, were later charged with her murder. At present we are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The first investigation related to Ms Mayhew was launched following a call to police shortly after 9am on April 2, to reports of possible human remains found on Rowdown Fields in Croydon.

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation who has yet to speak with police is asked to call 101, quoting reference 1656/02Apr.

The River Wandle is a nine-mile long tributary of the Thames. It passes through the  boroughs of Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Wandsworth.

Gemma Watts, 48, appeared at the Old Bailey via video-link last month (April) charged with Sarah Mayhew's murder.Steven Sansom, 44, is also accused of Ms Mayhew's murder and appeared at the same court via video-link.They are also charged with preventing her lawful and decent burial.

Human remains found in river belong to murder victim

Human remains found in a river in south London yesterday have been confirmed as belonging to murder victim Sarah Mayhew, whose body was cut up with power tools and dumped.

Police were called to the waterway near a recycling centre in Mitcham after repairmen made the grim discovery shortly before 2.30pm.

Ms Mayhew, 38, was last seen in Sutton on the evening of March 8. Her arms, legs and head were found in Rowdown Fields in New Addington, Croydon, on April 2.

Steven Sansom, 44, and Gemma Watts, 48, are charged with her murder as well as prevention of the lawful and decent burial of a body.

The couple allegedly killed Ms Mayhew at a residential property before her body was dismembered with power tools.

Her cause of death remains unascertained. However, an examination of her body found two small vertebrae were broken in her voicebox, bruising to the skull and her head had been shaved.

Detectives investigating after human remains were found in a park in Croydon have named the victim. The family of 38-year-old Sarah Mayhew, from Croydon, have been informed of her death and are currently being supported by specially trained family liaison officers. A 44-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were arrested on Saturday, 6 April on suspicion of Sarah?s murder. They both remain in custody pending further enquiries. https://news.met.police.uk/news/police-name-victim-after-human-remains-found-in-croydon-park-482178 Credit Met Police

The Old Bailey heard last month that investigations were continuing to locate the rest of Ms Mayhew’s remains.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, who is leading the investigation, said: ‘My thoughts remain with Sarah’s family. We will continue to provide our support as our investigation progresses.

‘I expect my officers to remain in the area for some time as they carry out important work at the scene.

‘Two people arrested, who were known to Sarah, were later charged with her murder. At present we are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death. Enquiries are ongoing.’

At least one dead and 30 injured after 'severe turbulence' hits flight from London to Singapore

At least one person died and 30 people were injured when a plane was hit by “severe turbulence,” Singapore Airlines said in a statement Tuesday.

The London to Singapore flight was diverted to Thailand's capital, Bangkok, landing there at 3:45 p.m. local time (4:45 a.m. ET), said the statement published on Facebook . “We can confirm that there are injuries and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER,” the statement added.

The company said in a later statement that 30 people required hospital treatment. Other passengers with more minor injuries were treated at the airport, it said.

Kittipong Kittikachorn, general manager of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, said Tuesday that the deceased was 73 years old.

Without saying whether they were a man or a woman, he said the person had some medical problems that could have led to a fatal cardiac arrest.

At least seven people were critically injured, he added at a news conference.

Kittikachorn said that an investigation would be carried out, but that the cause of the turbulence "was definitely air pockets."

Singapore Airlines offered its “deepest condolences to the family of the deceased” and said that it was working with Thai authorities to “provide the necessary medical assistance,” while also sending the company’s own team to Bangkok to assist.

After setting off at 10:38 p.m. London time (5:38 p.m. ET) Monday, the plane's journey appeared to be uneventful, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware .

But about 10 hours in, the plane experienced a sharp drop from a cruising altitude of 37,000 feet to 31,000 feet in just five minutes, the FlightAware data said. In one sudden lurch, it dropped almost 700 feet.

Less than 10 minutes later, the plane began its descent into Bangkok.

Passenger Dzafran Azmir, 28, said that he experienced the sensation of rising then falling.

“Suddenly the aircraft starts tilting up and there was shaking, so I started bracing for what was happening, and very suddenly there was a very dramatic drop, so everyone seated and not wearing a seat belt was launched immediately into the ceiling,” he told Reuters.

“Some people hit their heads on the baggage cabins overhead and dented it. They hit the places where lights and masks are and broke straight through it,” added Azmir, a student.

A 2021 study by the National Transportation Safety Board found that turbulence-related airline accidents are the most common type.

The NTSB found that from 2009 through 2018, turbulence accounted for more than a third of reported airline accidents and that most resulted in one or more serious injuries but no aircraft damage.

Human remains found in a London river are believed to be Sarah Mayhew’s, police have said.

Contractors carrying out cleaning work found the remains in Mitcham, south-west London, on Tuesday afternoon.

Metropolitan Police officers were called to Rawnsley Avenue at 2.18pm and a crime scene was set up.

Remains of the 38-year-old were first found by a dog walker in Rowndown Fields in New Addington, Croydon, south London, on April 2.

The dog uncovered a human bone and Ms Mayhew’s arms, legs and head were later found nearby.

On April 11 the Old Bailey heard that police were still looking for her torso.

Gemma Watts, 48, of Featherbed Lane in New Addington, and Steven Sansom, 45, of Burnell Road in Sutton, have been charged with her murder and preventing her lawful and decent burial.

It is alleged the couple killed Ms Mayhew at a residential property before her body was dismembered with power tools, the court heard.

An examination of her body found two small vertebrae were broken in her voicebox, bruising to the skull and her head had been shaved.

Ms Mayhew was last seen in Sutton, south-west London, on the evening of March 8.

Sansom also faces three separate charges of making indecent images of a child.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts remain with Sarah’s family. We will continue to provide our support as our investigation progresses.

“I expect my officers to remain in the area for some time as they carry out important work at the scene.

“Two people arrested, who were known to Sarah, were later charged with her murder. At present we are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death. Inquiries are ongoing.”

The family of Ms Mayhew, from Croydon, has been informed and is being supported by specialised officers.
