BASIC CRUISING COURSE

How much experience do I need to take the Basic Cruising course?

None! Whether you are a novice boater or this is your first vessel we will tailor the training program to meet your specific needs and goals.

Can I get my California Boater's License?

Yes! Because we are a US Powerboating school, we are approved by the California Department of Boating and Waterways to administer the CA Boaters Card exam as part of the BASIC CRUISING COURSE.

Will I be able to charter a vessel as Captain if we go abroad?

Yes! The US Powerboating Basic Cruising, Coastal Cruising and Night Operations courses, when combined, are recognized by many charter companies as qualification to charter their powerboats.

Do I have to take the US Powerboating certification couse to get insurance coverage as an owner/operator?

No. For owners who desire only to qualify for insurance coverage as an owner/operator we offer a non-certification BASIC POWERBOATING COURSE.

RYA Powerboat Instructor

Ever fancied teaching rya powerboating.

If you’re a competent, experienced powerboater and you’re interested in sharing your expertise and enthusiasm with others, this could be the course for you! This RYA approved course will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to teach RYA Powerboat Levels 1 and 2 at any recognised RYA training centres.

About the course

This practical and theory-based course will allow you to develop an understanding of the principles of practical instruction, lesson planning, teaching styles, the preparation of boats and equipment, the structure of RYA Powerboat Levels 1 and 2, assessing students’ learning, and the presentation of theory subjects. The syllabus is taught with a ratio of (6:1) students to instructor.

Providing that you maintain a valid first aid certificate, this course will be valid for five years from the date of issue.

Prerequisites

To join this course, you’ll need:

• to be at least 16 years old
• a valid  first aid  certificate
• an  RYA Powerboat Level 2  certificate
• Five seasons experience of powerboating logged (preferably in range of boat types and sizes) OR one season for those who use powerboats as an integral part of their normal full-time occupation.

Qualifications

Once you’ve successfully completed the course, you’ll be a qualified RYA Powerboat Instructor, able to teach the RYA Powerboat Scheme.

Safe Powerboat Handling Course

This 16-hour hands-on, on-the-water course is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a small motorboat and improve their boat-handling skills on actual boats. Completing a power boating course makes good sense. You want to enjoy your day on the water feeling confident that you have the skills and knowledge to operate your boat safely and efficiently. Our hands-on, on-the-water courses taught by certified powerboat instructors provides the training you need. 

The US Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved this course and an increasing number of states have recognized it as meeting their requirements for a state boating safety education certificate.

On-the-water topics covered:

-Engine and electrical systems

-Starting procedures

-Leaving and returning to a slip

-Close-quarters maneuvers

-Steering a range

-Proceeding to a destination

-Person in water rescue  

Classroom sessions:

-Safety, prep, and weather

-Maneuvering concepts

Tuition: $650 per person, including all course materials including Start Powerboating Right! textbook, Safe Powerboat Handling certification sticker, official logbook, sport powerboat certification standards, review questions, NASBLA supplement to Start Powerboating Right! NASBLA course completion card.

This is a four-evening course running 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Minimum required for course is 4 students, with a maximum of 6 students per session.

Kevin has been boating for 25 years. His love and passion for teaching and boating awarded him Instructor of the year from American Sailing Association for 2015.

Capt. Al Noble

Al has over 25 years on the water and tens of thousands of cruising hours under his belt. He maintains his 100 Ton Captians license and when he isn’t sailing can be found kayaking or fishing for trout in western North Carolina with his wife. Al has a passion for the sea that is unrivaled and experience that surpasses most.

For over ten years we have trained people to fulfil their ambition to become a RYA Instructor. We’re really proud of the start that we can give instructors as they start a hugely satisfying career.

We have been running instructor courses at the school for over ten years and in our time have trained many hundreds to become RYA instructors. Whether you want to become a RYA Powerboat or a Personal Watercraft Instructor or you want to instruct within the motor cruising scheme as a RYA Cruising Instructor we have courses scheduled throughout the year.

We also run courses to prepare people for their Powerboat Trainers assessment and Yachtmaster Instructor and Examiner courses on demand.

Powerboat Instructor

Become a RYA Powerboat Instructor to be able to teach Level 1, Level 2 and potentially the Safety Boat course as part of a RYA Training Centre. A great way to share your passion for boating with others.

Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment

This is a mandatory requirement ahead of the Powerboat Instructors course. If possible undertake the assessment 4 – 6 weeks before the Instructor course but we always schedule assessments for the day before an Instructor course just in case you can’t make it sooner.

Advanced Powerboat Instructor

An Advanced Instructor can teach the Advanced Powerboat and Intermediate Powerboat courses and run own boat training away from the centre’s base.

Personal Watercraft Instructor

A PW Instructor can teach the RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency course and the RYA Introduction to Personal Watercraft Safety course at a recognised RYA Training Centre.

Cruising Instructor

Got a passion for motorboating and want to share that passion – why not become a RYA Motor Cruising Instructor? As a commercially endorsed YM Offshore you can take this 4 day course on our boats or with a specifically arranged private course.

Host a safe powerboat instructor course, thank you for you interest in hosting a powerboat instructor course. please complete the form below and a staff member will respond to your request shortly. we look forward to hearing from you, requirements for hosting a safe powerboat instructor course, in an effort to ensure our courses run smoothly and provide maximum benefit to all participants, we suggest that host facilities have access to the following items:.

• 3-5 powerboats in good, working order. Preferably center consoles with outboard engines between 17 and 26 feet in length. All vessel documentation, as well as safety equipment required by your state and USCG, must be available and onboard during the course.
• Classroom space for up to 8 students (a/v, projector recommended, but not required)
• 3-5 marks w/ground tackle for on-the-water drills
