American Magic will spend the summer building out the team’s base in advance of winter training. The team will spend all winter in Pensacola training before relocating to Barcelona for the final push into the 37th America’s Cup.

“I am excited to welcome American Magic back to the City of Pensacola and the Port of Pensacola,” Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson said. “We are so proud to serve as their home base as they train for America’s Cup in Barcelona, and we look forward to seeing the American Magic team out sailing on beautiful Pensacola Bay.”

In 2018, American Magic was the first America’s Cup team to train in Florida since 1970. The Mule, a 38-foot test boat, first took to the Gulf waters in 2018 and then in 2019 on DEFIANT, the team’s AC75 – a 75-foot monohull.

“We are so grateful for the support we’ve seen from the Pensacola community since our very first visit here,” said Terry Hutchinson, Skipper, and President of Sailing Operations for NYYC American Magic. “The team is excited to return and continue training on Pensacola Bay, which has proven to be an ideal training venue for foiling monohulls. We look forward to continuing a long-term relationship with the Pensacola community, which has truly embraced American Magic from day one.”

Pensacola is known to be a premiere sailing venue in the United States. There is consistent wind on the bay, which is geographically relatively flat making for a great natural foiling location.

“Not only does Pensacola Bay offer ideal conditions for sailing, but the Port of Pensacola also provides world-class facilities,” remarked Tyson Lamond, Chief Operating Officer for American Magic. “The Port offers extensive dockage, storage, cargo handling equipment and a phenomenal staff that is so supportive to us, making it an ideal location for our team.”

Pensacola Bay – Official Home of New York Yacht Club American Magic

The Challenger for the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona makes its home here for one reason: there’s no better American bay for sailing. This unique sailing venue offers entry-level youth boats, high-performance small boats, and larger racing classes alike, unobstructed wide open waters, plenty of breeze, and minimal commercial traffic or currents.

Find Fair Winds Year-Round

Wind conditions vary seasonally, with the windier part of the year in the months from October-May, with an average of 8.1 mph. During this time, winds ahead of, during, and shortly after the passing frontal systems frequently range from 15-25 mph. In the warmer months of June-September, winds typically begin light in the morning, then build into the afternoon hours from the reinforcing southwesterly sea breeze.

Pensacola Bay and its sail racing area span roughly five by 11 miles, with water depth predominantly at 22’ to 32’.

Pensacola racing the clock to complete new American Magic HQ at the port by next year

P ensacola is on the clock to build a new $15 million headquarters for New York Yacht Club American Magic in time for its return for the 37th America's Cup.

The city has pledged to build the new Maritime Center of Excellence at the Port of Pensacola by November 2024, when the American Magic team is set to return from the America's Cup competition in Barcelona, Spain.

Completing a $15 million project in a year is an ambitious goal for the city as projects of similar size and scope have taken years to come together, but Pensacola Mayor Reeves said he believes they will be able to get it done.

"Time will always fly on a project like this and feel like you always want another week or another month, but we stand firm with our design (team), with American Magic, ourselves, that we're pushing as hard as we can," Reeves said. "And our expectation is to get it done in time."

Funding complete Pensacola wins $2.6 million needed to complete American Magic HQ at Port of Pensacola

The project is now underway, with the Pensacola City Council unanimously approving a $1.1 million contract Thursday with architecture and engineering firm Muller and Muller Inc. to design phase one of the new Maritime Center of Excellence.

Phase two of the design, which will come later, will also be awarded to Muller and Muller for $350,000, mainly for the new boat dock and ramp at the facility.

Construction estimates for the new center are currently $13.6 million.

Earlier this year, Reeves picked up the baton of the previous administration to bring a permanent home for American Magic and was able to land three state grants that fully funded the project.

The new facility will retrofit the uncomplete Warehouse No. 10 at the Port of Pensacola to become a 64,000-square-foot facility.

The relocation of American Magic will create 170 jobs in advanced manufacturing, engineering and design, and high-tech research, according to city officials.

Final lease negotiations with American Magic are still underway, but Reeves said he expects those to be wrapped up soon.

"We're going to have a great long-term relationship with American Magic," Reeves said. "We've understood coming into the negotiation where each other stood, and I don't perceive there to be any hurdles to that."

The team is competing in the America's Cup and is set to race in the second preliminary regatta later this month in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The team won a preliminary regatta in Spain in September.

The racing will take a break until August 2024, when a third preliminary regatta will take place. After that, the Louis Vuitton Cup will take place in August and September 2024, where the teams will compete to race against the defending team, Emirates New Zealand, in the actual 37 th America's Cup in October 2024.

The team will return to Pensacola in November to the new facility, hopefully with the America's Cup.

Reeves said either way, Pensacola will be ready.

"I'm very confident in our team," Reeves said. "Our team is fully aware this is our No. 1 priority in getting executed. Between our port staff and our economic development staff, this is project No. 1 at this point."

Pensacola's adopted sailing team, American Magic, racing this weekend. How to watch

new york yacht club pensacola

New York Yacht Club American Magic took first place in a preliminary regatta in the 37th America's Cup, potentially bringing one of the world's premier sailing events one step closer to being hosted in Pensacola.

Pensacola's adopted American Magic team joined five other international sailing teams this weekend in Vilanova i la Geltru for a three-day preliminary regatta in the 37th America's Cup.

The preliminary races are more exhibition matches between the six teams to allow them to test their skills against the other competitors. The preliminary races were this past weekend in Spain and in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Nov. 29.

The Challenger Series, where teams start earning points to qualify for a one-on-one final race with defending America's Cup team Emirates New Zealand begins in the summer of 2024 in Spain.

Despite rough weather and an uphill climb after entering the final day of the regatta in fifth place, American Magic's quartet of Tom Slingsby, Paul Goodison, Riley Gibbs and Michael Menninger "orchestrated a nearly flawless display of high-pressure regatta sailing. Through consistent starting, boat handling, and boat speed, they capitalized on every opportunity," ultimately taking home the victory, according to the team.

The team conducted some of its training for the race in Pensacola and some in Barcelona, and a watch party for the event at Seville Quarter drew a packed crowd of fans.

The regatta took place after the Pensacola City Council voted unanimously on Thursday to approve the final terms of an $8.5 million Triumph Gulf Coast grant that will go toward a $15 million Center for Maritime Excellence at the Port of Pensacola to serve as American Magic's HQ when they return from the America's Cup race.

Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves has said if the team wins the 37th America's Cup it will look to host an America's Cup race in Pensacola.
