The Real Cause Of Below Deck Sailing Yacht's Scary Boat Crash

Below Deck's Kate Chastain and Captain Lee visit SiriusXM studios

Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans can't get over season two's bombshell moment — a.k.a. that terrifying boat crash at the center of it all. Although the latest season is jam-packed with all the nautical drama, both below and above deck, the crash is what we can't stop thinking about. Luckily, Captain Glenn Shephard gave all the details on the accident to E! News , and to be honest, it's still pretty scary!

In the moment that has our hearts racing, the Parsifal III can be seen crashing into a docking wall, all the while Captain Glenn yells out expletives. While the Captain is known to be calm, cool, and collected, the alarming incident was enough to make him lose it.

As Captain Glenn explained to E! News , the crash was "the first time that's happened." As he explained, it is "fortunate it's the first time, but unfortunate that it happened." Adding to his regret, the Captain is also sorry for his use of curse words — but adamant that the event warranted it. As he told the outlet, he is "a sailor" after all, and that he "swear[s] occasionally." He stated, "obviously I get frustrated and things happened ... when something like that happens, it's pretty big."

Everything to know about Below Deck Sailing Yacht season two's boat crash

The Captain told Showbiz Cheat Sheet his cursing was due to thinking the crash was much worse. He explained, "In the end, it's not quite as bad as I feared. So I may have overreacted ... but yeah, it's pretty serious."

So what caused the crash in the first place? As the sailor described, it was all due to a "throttle malfunction." He continued, "there is a computer in between the throttles and the propeller to manage the load on the engine ... I was using a maneuver mode that I don't usually use, and I think my normal actions, in that mode, was a bit too much for the computer" (via E! News ). Not used to the mode at hand, the boat soon slammed into the dock – which was a bit embarrassing for the seasoned expert.

As the Captain stated, "I've avoided [crashing] all my career and, of course, now with the cameras rolling it happens." That being said, he isn't letting it get to him, and we're here for it! Although he made it clear that "hitting the dock like that can be a season-ending incident," he reminded everyone that these "things do happen." But haters are of course gonna hate, and Captain Glenn knows he will "take a lot of flak" for the incident.

Although not sailing experts ourselves, we're more than a bit addicted to this new season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht  — and no, as promised by Captain Glenn himself, he didn't just crash "for the drama." Whew!

Below Deck Sailing Yacht ’s Boat Crash Was Worse Than It Looked in All Those Clips

Portrait of Justin Curto

The collision between Gary and Daisy during the Below Deck Sailing Yacht crew ’s day off had nothing on what was to come. May 10’s episode finally brought the boat crash that Below Deck Sailing Yacht had been teasing since before the season started, and somehow, it was even worse than it seemed in all those clips. The problems began on a particularly windy morning, hours before the crew needed to pick up guests for their next charter. Soon after deckhand Sydney Zaruba noticed the wind was turning the boat, the stern started scraping against the dock. To get away, the crew had to unplug the yacht from shore power on the dock — which became a problem of its own once the boat was away from the dock, but unable to move in the wind. With chief engineer Colin Macrae off the boat on some chief-engineer business, first mate Gary King had to figure out Parsifal III ’s generator system to get the yacht power. But their worries didn’t end once Gary got power to the boat — the deck crew then had to get the anchors up after they’d been dragging. And you thought sailing was stressful!

After the yacht got safely away from the dock, the crew surveyed the boat’s scratches. “It could’ve been a lot more serious damage,” Captain Glenn Shepard said in a confessional. “Like a season-ending kind of damage.” “Someone could lose their life in a situation like this,” reflected deckhand Jean-Luc Cerza-Lanaux. And once Colin got back on board, he added that “it would’ve been a totally different situation” if Gary hadn’t been able to turn on the generator. “I think Gary saved our ass.”

As it turned out, though, the crew wasn’t out of the woods. When they headed back to the dock to pick up guests, they ran into more issues with the strong winds. “Here we go again, with the wind blowing us into the dock,” Gary said in a confessional. “We literally cannot catch a break.” As the crew began docking the boat, Parsifal III ’s bow thrusters stopped working in the wind — sending the boat right into the dock for a second time, in the even-worse crash that we saw in the season’s trailer.

Will this one be the “season-ending kind of damage” Captain Glenn talked about? While the episode closes on a particularly stressful “To be continued …” Glenn shared on a pre-season Reddit AMA that it still “could have been a lot worse. “A repair like that would probably run $10k-$20k,” he wrote, adding that the boat already needed to be repainted. “That is always covered by insurance,” he added. “The boats are well insured.”

Below Deck Sailing Yacht 's Boat Crash Was More Intense Than We Could've Imagined

On may 10's episode of below deck sailing yacht , bravo viewers watched as parsifal iii made contact with a docking wall...twice..

Dock drama.

On tonight, May 10's episode of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , the drama that's been teased all season finally occurred. We're, of course, talking about the moment mega-yacht Parsifal III made contact with a docking wall . Yet, the new episode revealed that there were two  mishaps involving docking.

The initial accident, which occurred towards the latter half of the episode, certainly came out of nowhere. In the moments leading up to the problem, Captain Glenn Shephard noted to first mate Gary King that the wind was blowing 25 knots and advised his deckhand team to ease out one of the lines and place more fenders on the dock.

Although some fenders were already in place, deckhand Sydney Zaruba began to panic when she noticed the ship heading "really far to starboard." As Sydney called out to Gary, fellow deckhand Jean-Luc Cerza Lanaux scrambled to grab more fenders.

"We might need to startup, Glenn," Gary radioed to the captain.

Despite Glenn racing to start up the ship, Parsifal III found itself making contact with the dock.

"We're rubbing on the dock, Glenn," the first mate told the captain. "We're rubbing on the dock."

The situation was certainly a dire one as Sydney was heard saying "f--king hell" while trying to place fenders. To make matters worse, the port anchor was dragging during all of this.

Captain Glenn then ordered his crew to disconnect the ship from the shore power and tried to kick ahead. "We need to get a generator online," the captain informed Gary. "I don't have any thrusters."

He then ordered everyone aboard to get as far away from the dock as possible. Not only was Sydney seen jumping onto the ship, but the crew also faced lines snapping off as they pulled away.

They weren't out of the woods just yet as they needed a generator turned on and chief engineer Colin Macrae was missing in action . Thankfully, Gary was able to turn on one of the generators.

Colin, who raced back to the ship in a tender, noted in a confessional, "If Gary didn't know how to start that generator, we wouldn't have been able to pick up the anchor, Glenn would have no steering and it would've been a totally different situation. I think Gary saved our ass."

After inspecting the stern, Glenn declared it "was a lot better than I was imagining." To the camera, Glenn noted there could've been "a lot more serious damage, like, a season ending kind of damage."

Unfortunately, this wasn't the only collision of the episode as, at a different dock, the ship faced a malfunction and full on collided with the wall. Yep, you read that correctly. "I'm f--king going ahead, but I've lost it," Captain Glenn said to himself as his crew shouted at him to slow down. "F--k me. God damn it. F--k."

The captain addressed the incident with E! News back in February, calling the situation "very serious."

"It's just something you want to avoid," he said at the time. "I've avoided it all my career and, of course, now with the cameras rolling it happens."

Captain Glenn of Below Deck Sailing Yacht   is sharing some shocking details behind the dock boat crash that left viewers shocked. The accident looked pretty bad, but luckily, no one got hurt. So what exactly happened on the boat, and why did it malfunction?

Glenn Shephard is the newest of the three captains to the Below Deck franchise. The captain’s sailboats are all about catching the wind as their sleek design is top of the line. The living quarters on Below Deck Sailing Yacht may be a bit smaller, and the stew stations are almost nonexistent, but fans are getting a drama-packed season. The crew is intertwined thanks to a love triangle, and the chief stew has had it up to her limit with the lack of help. Above all, the captain is a leader who doesn’t micromanage and genuinely enjoys his laid-back life.

Captain Glenn is a true sailor since he has to depend on the wind and manipulate the boat accordingly with the help of his seamen, but even salty old seas dogs get into an accident every so often. Fans watched Monday’s episode as the captain looked horrified at the fact that he had lost his power steering and was heading for a collision course with the cement dock. Viewers could hear him radioing the crew, saying, “There’s something wrong with the engine.” Then, while chatting with Cheat Sheet , he revealed he felt the impact.

The captain was seen cursing, and he admitted he might have overreacted, saying, “And when I’m feeling the impact, I’m fearing the worst and thinking, ‘Oh my God, this is really, really bad.’ In the end, it’s not quite as bad as I feared.” Yachtie fans will recall that almost every captain on the franchise has had an issue with the power shutting down at some point. While Captain Glenn didn't go into too much detail, he did say it was the worse accident he had been a part of.

The  Below Deck Sailing Yacht crash caused $20,000 worth of damage, but Captain Glenn took full responsibility. The crew did catch a lucky break since the paint company owed the captain a respray which could have cost them a heavy price. Naturally, all boats are covered with insurance, but it just goes to show even the best drivers can have an off day .

Inside Below Deck ’s Climb to First-Time Emmy Contender

below deck sailing yacht crash

When Captain Lee Rosbach welcomed producer Courtland Cox onto the superyacht he was commanding, the Cuor di Leone, about 10 years ago, he wasn’t doing it out of the kindness of his heart.

“My boss had called and told me that the boat was being considered for an eight-week charter on a reality show,” says Rosbach, remembering back to a time when he had no interest in reality TV or reality TV people.

But as any Below Deck viewer knows, hierarchy is inarguable. So at the request of his boss, Rosbach begrudgingly gave Cox what he calls the “10 cent tour. Most of the production company didn’t know anything about boats,” remembers Rosbach. “And I knew absolutely nothing about TV production. I remember thinking, ‘If there was ever a recipe for a disaster, this has gotta be it.’”

below deck sailing yacht crash

Since that meeting, and Below Deck’s 2013 debut on Bravo, Rosbach has been stunned to see the series become a massive success—expanding into two spin-offs, Below Deck Mediterranean and Below Deck Sailing Yacht (with two more on the way), eclipsing  Real Housewives as the network’s most-watched linear series last season, and earning its first two Emmy nominations this year—for unstructured reality show and editing an unstructured reality program. But the Captain was spot-on about Below Deck  in another sense—the ambitious at-sea series was a logistical nightmare to create.

The idea for Below Deck —a delicious upstairs-downstairs look into the yachting world—had come from former Bachelor in Paradise director (and former yacht steward) Rebecca Taylor Henning and her husband, Doug . They introduced Cox and his 51 Minds producing partner Mark Cronin to the rarified superyachting world—where multimillion-dollar vessels are staffed by young, hard-partying adventure seekers. During the day, “yachties” serve and satisfy the whims of wealthy charter guests. At night, they carouse with crew, burn through cash tips on booze, and in some cases, pursue ill-advised romances with coworkers in their cramped downstairs quarters.

Unlike many reality shows, which are set in controlled locations and cast based entirely on potential audience appeal, Below Deck features actual yachties doing actual jobs aboard actual vessels. These yachts are subject to maritime law and insurance policies, meaning that production cannot interfere or influence the captain’s handling of his or her boat. As The New York Times put it, “for a reality show, [it is] uncommonly constrained by the bounds of reality.” Among the many considerations each season:

  • The yacht has to be big enough to fit a control room and small tech room, and oriented in a way so that it can be wired for camera and audio. Because each yacht is registered in a different country, production has to take a crash course on varying regulations each season.
  • The island location has to have a dock that can house the boat for the six weeks; plus the infrastructure to house approximately 50 employees for six straight weeks of production.
  • The shooting hours are round-the-clock. Remembering an early learning curve, Cox says, “Our first call sheet had camera crews arriving at 7 a.m. and wrapping by 10 p.m. because that’s what you do for a normal reality show. Then we realized that yachties stay up until three o’clock in the morning drinking and hanging out, and we didn’t have the cameras there to cover it.”
  • The shooting season is a finite and inflexible timeline of six weeks. Per The New York Times : “Whereas a season of Housewives might shoot for four to five months, Below Deck is allotted one third of that time to produce the same number of episodes.”
  • The cast, for the most part, has to have actual yachting qualifications and certifications. “You can’t just find people who are fun and funny and interesting,” says Cox. “You have to find people who have the credentials and training to even be legal.” (Some entry-level cast members have occasionally inflated their résumés—which the captain realizes pretty quickly.)

“We had to completely change our production model,” says Cox, looking back on Below Deck ’s inception and the first handful of seasons it took to iron out wrinkles. “You have to evolve all the time because on any given day you have to monitor the swell, the wind, the wind direction, the proximity to a beach, the transportation time for a production crew to get from the hotel to the yacht, etc.”

Rosbach, who is the only Below Deck cast member to have appeared on every season of the original series, says that the chemistry of the constantly rotating cast members is another factor that can’t be predicted. “Each season you’re trying to get it together with different levels of experience and different personalities, and let’s toss in the fact that they are very young, inexperienced, and in an exotic location with copious amounts of money to spend. It’s a perfect storm in a good way because things happen that you could not script.” (The franchise has featured maritime  drug busts , bad romances, cheating scandals, nightmare charter guests, and even a yacht crash .)

Noah Samton, senior vice president of current production for Bravo, theorizes that the authenticity of Below Deck ’s working conditions—which were so difficult to figure out how to capture—is what keeps viewers engaged each season. “There’s none of the skepticism that people sometimes have about reality: Is this real? Is this not real? With Below Deck , it’s clear that we’re just following them through their actual work lives.”

This was most clear on Below Deck ’s eighth and most recent season—which opened with Rosbach in the hospital and closed with the cast disembarking early due to the coronavirus. The season featured the usual Below Deck trademarks—messy romantic and coworker drama, chaotic crew turnover, and magnificent vistas—but with a few emotional twists. Rosbach was reunited with his surrogate son-at-sea, Eddie Lucas, a viewer-beloved bosun who appeared on the show’s first three seasons. The crew was dealing in real time with mounting coronavirus concerns. And then, Rosbach—the same captain who initially didn’t want any part of Below Deck —opened up unexpectedly on camera.

Seated at dinner with charter guests Jackie and David Siegel, who lost their daughter to an overdose in 2015 , Rosbach revealed that he recently lost his son Joshua after an addiction battle. Most reality stars have no problem reflecting on their own traumas on camera, but for the usually gruff captain, it was a poignant moment of vulnerability that struck a chord with longtime viewers.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

“On the heels of this incredibly awful tragedy that Lee and [his wife] Mary Anne suffered…to be able to have someone familiar like Eddie come back, when he has been like a son to Lee, it got magnified into this kind of amazing but awful coincidence,” Cox says, reflecting on the previous season. “While you’re seeing what Lee went through and seeing what Eddie meant to him, it really puts it in perspective—how you’re making a TV show with real human stakes.”

Because of the pandemic, the eighth season had to be edited remotely—a Slack challenge for production members used to talking out certain footage in person. “It’s mind-blowing when I think back on it, because it’s a monumental season to try to put together under terrible circumstances,” says Cox, explaining why the nominations for this particular season are especially gratifying. “This is a nice validation of all of that hard work that we’ve been doing for 19 seasons now.”

Cox exclusively confirms that Rosbach and Lucas will be reunited, again, on Below Deck ’s ninth season , which premieres October 25 and will be set on St. Kitts. In a separate interview, Lucas reveals that he will appear on the season in a new rank as first officer. “It’s a different dynamic between me and the Captain—I can kind of challenge his way of thinking and better understand his leadership style. No matter how long I work with the Captain, I keep on learning new things.”

Bravo recently announced that the Below Deck franchise continues to grow, with two new spin-offs slated to debut next year. Below Deck Down Under , also produced by 51 Minds, will be set in the Whitsunday Islands, between Australia and the Great Barrier Reef, and air on Peacock. “Not only is it down under in terms of being in Australia, but a lot of the show is literally being filmed underneath the water in the sea paradise that is the Great Barrier Reef,” explains Samton. “There’s a lot of diving, scuba diving, snorkeling, spear fishing, and the cast actually gets involved in a lot of the diving excursions.”

The other spin-off, Below Deck Adventure , produced by Shed Media, will take place in Alesund, Norway. “We’re shooting in the fjords,” explains Samton, “so the water’s a lot colder. If you fall in there, it can be dangerous.” The charter guests in this spin-off, points out Samton, will also be markedly different for the Below Deck universe. “These are people who spend a lot of money on adventure excursions to paraglide or explore glaciers. These are not the same people who want to get a tan and drink 20 margaritas on a boat,” says Samton. “Each expansion has brought something unique with it that you don’t find in any of the other franchises that have come before it,” says Shari Levine, Bravo’s executive vice president of current productions, who thinks the franchise has endless potential. “The idea of people living and working together getting into romances with each other onboard provides so much fascinating material for viewers. I call it a perfect show because it has so many different kinds of stories and different kinds of reasons to watch.”

As for Captain Lee, he says he was “shocked and humbled” by the recent Emmy nominations. Speaking about Below Deck ’s run, Rosbach says he’s just happy the production team hasn’t gotten in his way.

“I don’t run my boat any differently now than I did 20 years ago or 25 years ago,” says Rosbach. As for the idea of the Below Deck universe expanding even further with the new spin-offs, the captain took a moment to reflect in his own parlance: “Jesus. Who the hell would’ve thunk?”

Below Deck renewed for Season 12: What about Below Deck Down Under and Below Deck Sailing Yacht?

Aesha Scott and Daisy Kelliher confessionals

Below Deck Season 12 has been confirmed, but there are still so many questions regarding the future of Below Deck Sailing Yacht and Below Deck Down Under.

Last week, Bravo announced that several shows have been green-lit for another season, with Below Deck Season 12 at the top of the list.

As Monsters and Critics previously reported, Captain Kerry Titheradge and a couple of Season 11 crew members will be back for another season of the OG show.

While the return of Below Deck is undoubtedly great news, fans are worried about the lack of renewals for Below Deck Down Under and Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

So, should Below Deck fans be concerned about the future of the Below Deck spin-offs?

Let’s take a look at what we know.

Why were Below Deck Down Under and Below Deck Sailing Yacht not renewed by Bravo?

There’s a very good reason why the two Below Deck spin-offs were not renewed right now. Neither of their already-ordered seasons have aired yet, so Bravo isn’t in a rush to get a new season in the can.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 and Below Deck Down Under Season 3 have been filmed and will eventually air on Bravo.

Last month, Bravo revealed that Below Deck Med Season 9 will premiere after Below Deck Season 11 wraps, rather than Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 , as fans had hoped.

The schedule change and the lack of news about Below Deck Down Under and Below Deck Sailing Yacht have fans in a frenzy. But there’s no reason to fear the two Below Deck spin-offs are done for good.

After all, Below Deck Med wasn’t renewed for Season 10, and we all know the Captain Sandy Yawn spin-off isn’t going anywhere before the milestone season.

It means we must wait until the already-filmed seasons air before getting news on future ones. Honestly, at this point, we would be happy with info on the seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht and Below Deck Down Under that have been filmed.

More Below Deck news

The Below Deck world has been busy over the past week with lots of information coming out, including Fraser Olender and charter guest Steven.

Below Deck Med star Aesha Scott got engaged to her longtime love, Scotty Dobson.

Captain Sandy Yawn married her longtime love, Leah Shafer, last weekend, with several Below Deck fan favorites in attendance for the nuptials.

There’s also not great news for a Below Deck Season 11 reunion show, but not all hope has been lost just yet.

Captain Jason Chambers has shared a message with Below Deck Down Under fans while they wait for Season 3, and it’s so good!

Keep checking back with Monsters and Critics for all the Below Deck news.

‘Pretty dangerous’: Yacht captain lends insights on area where teen killed in boat crash

He also says boat towing ella adler, 15, is ‘not ideal’ for wakeboarding.

Christina Vazquez , Reporter

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – A Key Biscayne yacht captain is sharing insight into the area where 15-year-old Ella Adler lost her life over the weekend.

A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report said she was wakeboarding with someone else when she fell into the water near the Nixon Beach Sandbar and was struck and killed by the passing boater, who never stopped to help.

“She had the wakeboard on, she had fallen off from being towed, and she was just in the water waiting to be recovered by her vessel,” FWC Officer George Reynaud told “Good Morning America” Wednesday. “She was in the water, with her life jacket on, with her wakeboard attached at the time of the impact.”

Reynaud said, “Nixon Beach does have a sandbar where boats go to congregate, however, they were outside of that area.”

The report, released Wednesday, identified the operator as Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, of Coral Gables.

Yacht captain Griffen Diaz spoke to Local 10 News on Wednesday. He said he was anchored at Nixon Beach, about a mile north of the crash, when it happened at around 4 p.m. Saturday.

“My heart goes out to this girl’s family and everyone who was involved,” Diaz said. “I have been really heartbroken about this story.”

Diaz said the water was choppy that day.

“The wind and the waves were coming out of the west which is very unusual for Biscayne Bay, it is a rare wind occurrence and it makes the bay a lot choppier,” he said.

WATCH 4PM STORY:

The yacht captain told Local 10 News the channel is known to be treacherous.

“It is pretty dangerous there to water ski because of the heavy traffic; I would never recommend it,” Diaz said, later adding, “The last thing someone would expect is to find (someone) waterskiing in the water in that heavy traffic area.”

Instead, he said, “If someone were to want to waterski or go tubing or any kind of water sports there’s an area right in front of Brickell, right in front of the apartment buildings in Brickell, actually just North of the Rickenbacker Causeway bridge and that is a safe area because it is away from a channel and it is a safe place to waterski.”

We’re also learning more about the boat towing Adler: a 42-foot Fjord.

“Which is not the ideal boat you want to be waterskiing on or pulling somebody with,” Diaz said. “The ideal waterskiing boat has one single engine and can turn on a dime and pick you right back up.”

Regarding the crash, he said, “If she let go of the rope or fell, and the captain did not notice, that would be negligent on his behalf because your eyes are locked on the person in tow and that is usually the rule we follow.”

Diaz said it’s possible that Alonso, who authorities said is cooperating with investigators, didn’t know he even hit Adler.

“The last thing someone would expect is to find a waterskier in the water in that heavy traffic area,” he said. “It was a four-engine boat, they could have been going at a high rate of speed (and) by the time they got close they didn’t even see her in the water.”

It’s not clear whether Alonso will be charged.

Below Deck Season 9 spoilers tease an anchor disaster, a crew firing, Captain Sandy's warning, and more

Below Deck Med Season 9 will be here before we know it and Bravo has given a little tease of what’s coming.

Captain Sandy Yawn and Aesha Scott headline the new season of Below Deck Med, premiering after Below Deck Season 11 wraps.

We know Below Deck Med was just on, with Season 8 ending in January.

However, Bravo has pushed back Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5, so it’s full steam ahead with Below Deck Season 9.

Honestly, the trailer doesn’t look too bad and the return of Aesha has us excited for the show.

In an attempt to get Below Deck Med fans pumped for Season 9 Bravo has dropped another teaser and it’s good.

Below Deck Med Season 9 spoilers tease so much chaos and an upset Captain Sandy Yawn

The new preview video reveals the deck team clearly has a lot of struggles. Bosun Iain Maclean deals with the pressure by barking orders at his team. Ian goes into full micromanaging mode, which doesn’t sit well with Deckhand Nathan Gallager.

A flip of the scene shows a docking that really doesn’t go well for the deck crew. Captain Sandy has no patience for Ian, leading Nathan to make a witty remark to Deckhand Joe Bradley.

Later, an anchor mishap leads to chaos, hinting disaster looms, and no doubt someone will get a plane ticket home.

The interior doesn’t fare any better than the deck team. Stew Bri Muller goes off on Elena Dubaich, making it clear trouble is brewing between the two women.

Aesha can be seen in tears, and we wonder what interior team drama has her so upset. After Captain Sandy warns that two people could be fired, we learn a new stew arrives, indicating either Bri or Elena won’t last the whole season.

The preview brought a lot of opinions from Below Deck Med fans.

Below Deck Med Season 9 teaser earns mixed reviews

The comments section of the @belowdeckbravo Instagram Post featuring the Below Deck Med preview was flooded with remarks on the footage.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht star Captain Glenn Shephard popped in to express his support for the show writing, “Looks wild.”

Other comments included concern for Aesha crying and some indicating they won’t watch the show because of Captain Sandy.

“My jaw dropped!!! I’ve watched every series bar adventure and I have NEVER seen that happen,” read a remark.

Another called out the lack of diversity on Below Deck Med, while a different one can’t hold back excitement for the upcoming season.

“Oh dang was that them losing the whole entire anchor???,” wrote a different user.

Those are just a few of the comments from Below Deck Med fans as Season 9 of the hit yachting show nears.

In other Below Deck Med news, Captain Sandy Yawn married her girlfriend Leah Shafer this past weekend. As Monsters and Critics previously reported, a few familiar faces were in attendance, including Aesha.

Will you be watching Below Deck Med Season 9?

Below Deck Med Season 9 premieres Monday, June 3 at 9/8c on Bravo. Seasons 1-8 are streaming on Peacock.

Another family mourning the death of a daughter in a boat accident urges boater safety laws

By Ivan Taylor

Updated on: May 14, 2024 / 8:50 AM EDT / CBS Miami

MIAMI - Hundreds of mourners are remembering the life of a 15-year-old Ella Adler , killed in a crash off Key Biscayne while she was water skiing.

Police are still searching for the boater who hit her and never stopped.

The parents of another teen girl who also lost her life in a boating accident say they know what the Adler family is going through and it is time to make a difference.

"Enough is enough, how many more of our children are we going to lose?" said Andy Fernandez.

Fernandez and his wife Melissa are the parents of Lucy Fernandez , who died in a Labor Day Weekend boat crash in 2022. Just like Ella Adler, Fernandez was attending a friend's birthday.

Fernandez was on board a 29-foot-vessel when it crashed into a channel marker  near Boca Chita Key. Her parents feel for the Adler family who are going through the same heart-crushing pain.

"We want the Adler family to know that we are standing in absolute solidarity with them," said Andy Fernandez.

Adler was water skiing near Key Biscayne's Nixon Beach sandbar on Saturday when she fell in the water while skiing and was hit by a boat.

Monday morning hundreds of mourners packed Temple Beth Sholom on Miami Beach for final services for the teen.

"She was a great dancer. My daughter's best friend," said Loren Pearson.

Miami City Ballet also issued a statement:

"We at Miami City Ballet and the Miami City Ballet School are utterly devastated by the heartbreaking news of this tragic incident... Ella Adler was not just a beloved student and a magnificent dancer, she was an integral part of our family..."

CBS News Miami's Ivan Taylor spoke with Andy Fernandez about Adler's accident. Fernandez said he has over 30 years of experience as a boater.

"In the case of Ella, it was a hit-and-run accident. Is it possible that the person who was driving the boat would have hit the girl and not know that he hit her?" asked Taylor

"My personal opinion is they must have felt something or known something (they hit in the water)," he said.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is looking for a center console boat with a light blue hull, with multiple white outboard engines and it may have blue or dark blue bottom paint.

"There should be a manhunt for this boat at this point, but at the very least somebody should be turning themselves in," added Melissa Fernandez.

The Fernandez family is channeling their pain by raising awareness of the need to establish laws and regulations for boaters. They've created a foundation in their daughter's name .

"Through the foundation what we are trying to do is we are trying to make better operators, safer operators," said Andy Fernandez.

Florida does not require a license for boating. The state only requires anyone born after January 1, 1988, to complete a boating safety course and obtain a boating safety ID card.

"We're asking, we started a Change.org petition asking that all voters regardless of the date they were born, if they operate a boat they go through a certification course," said Melissa Fernandez.

'WE'LL NEED ALL HANDS ON DECK': Details emerge after deadly boat crash near Kingston Back to video

The Ontario Provincial Police’s collision reconstruction team is piecing together what happened, spokesman Bill Dickson said Wednesday.

Three young adults died and five other people were taken to hospital after a speedboat ended up on top of a fishing boat on Bobs Lake north of Kingston, Ont., shortly after 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

“We can’t speculate on charges at this point,” Dickson said. “That will depend on the outcome of the investigation.”

Recordings of emergency dispatches posted online reveal a chaotic scene Saturday night as paramedics, police and firefighters raced to the area while dispatchers figured out where rescue boats could be launched.

“OPP and ambulance are reporting two boats have crashed, they can hear people screaming for help,” a dispatcher from South Frontenac Fire and Rescue said around 9:46 p.m.

They had an initial report of one person without vital signs. The crash occurred on a narrow channel in a part of Bobs Lake known as Buck Bay, firefighters said.

Around 10:10 p.m., first responders found most of the crash victims wedged together on the boats next to a concrete dock near a few cottages. Police and firefighters were first on the scene.

Two people were without vital signs while another was in and out of consciousness, a firefighter told dispatch.

“We’ll need all hands on deck,” the firefighter said in a calm voice.

“There is a fishing boat at a concrete dock with a sport boat on top of it,” a firefighter said. “We’re performing CPR on the boat.”

Three people, all in their early 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene, police have said.

The OPP released the names of the victims: Riley Orr, Juliette Cote and Kaila Bearman.

There was confusion about how many people were on board each boat. First responders were treating seven people, but believed there may have been another in the water.

Rescuers launched a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera to help with the search as marine firefighters scoured the dark waters for signs of life.

Several hours later, rescuers recovered a body.

The crash occurred during Safe Boating Awareness Week. OPP say 23 boaters and paddlers died in the province last year, and 21 of those deaths occurred because their boat capsized or they went overboard. Seventeen people who died were not wearing life-jackets.

Police have not said whether victims of the crash on Bobs Lake were wearing life-jackets.
