Soul Mates, a 2020 Azimut 60 Fly, is equally at home doing extended island-hopping voyages in the Caribbean, or taking a relaxing jaunt down the coast for a long weekend. This is a one-owner yacht that is ready for its next cruise and is on the market at a reduced price of $1.59 million. 

MarineMax stated that “ Soul Mates is a well-cared for, fully equipped boat with extensive premium options tailored for exploring the Florida Keys and the Bahamas.” 

Soul Mates has a solid 79,400-pound displacement, but this yacht can move . Powered with twin Volvo Penta D13 diesel engines, this Azimut 60 Fly will promptly accelerate up to 32 knots. The comfortable cruise speed is around 26 knots. Pull the throttles back to around 21 knots to increase fuel efficiency and extend the vessel’s cruising range to 360 nautical miles. A Seakeeper gyrostabilizer virtually eliminates roll, enhancing cruising comfort. A bow thruster helps during close-quarter maneuvers. 

Owners can entertain several guests on Soul Mates spacious flybridge, aft deck and foredeck. Access to the flybridge is via a set of steps from the aft deck. The flybridge has a fiberglass hardtop that covers the helm to port, cushioned bench-style seats to starboard and a C-shaped dinette abaft the helm. The aft deck is open with sofas to port and starboard, allowing guests to relax underway and soak up the sun. Fire up the barbecue for lunch and enjoy a few beverages too. The flybridge ice maker and refrigerator are built into the wet bar, which is a plus for convenience.

Soul Mates’ cockpit is shaded by the flybridge overhang with a forward-facing, bench-style seat with table and chairs and a teak sole. Guests can relax watching a football game, or easily access the swim platform, foredeck and salon. A swim platform provides seamless water access. Walk up to the foredeck, which has a convertible setup. All the seats convert to sun pads or change it up with a dinette-style layout for sundowners with friends. If the sun gets too hot, the foredeck sun shade sail will help keep the space cool.

Enter the salon through a sliding glass door from the aft deck. Windows flanking the salon allow natural light to flow through the main deck. Guests can relax on sofas to both port and starboard, or enjoy a meal at the dinette to starboard. The dinette is directly across from the galley and the yacht’s designers built in a full-size window, creating panoramic views. A hi-lo table folds open with seating for four adults.   

The galley is cozy and centrally located. It’s equipped with a Miele cooktop and oven, a refrigerator/freezer and wine chiller. An array of cabinets handle stowage for cruising provisions. Upper cabinets over the cooktop and sink were removed to enhance the views through the galley window. 

After a long day on the water, owners and guests can retire to one of three staterooms. The master stateroom has a king-sized berth with an en suite head. Owners will find plenty of stowage space for extended journeys and even a built-in safe. The forepeak VIP stateroom has a queen-sized berth and two additional guests can relax in the third guest stateroom with twin-sized berths. There is a crew space with twin-sized berths, which could also be used for extra stowage or for a couple of teenagers looking for privacy.

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

Contract language concerning deductions involved in flipping a Gucci flagship store clearly shows why an investor lost out on an extra $3 million payment, an attorney for real estate investment firm Festival Cos. argued Wednesday before the Delaware Supreme Court.

After a 2022 trial, the Court of Chancery rejected claims that Festival and its chairman, Mark Schurgin, used improper accounting deductions to push the net sale price of the store in Beverly Hills, Calif., below a threshold that would have triggered millions in payments to an earlier investor.

Three of Clemson’s Boats make Grand Final at ACC Championship

Raleigh, N.C. (Clemson Athletics) - In the prelim races on Friday, May 17th, three of the Clemson Tiger’s boats earned themselves a spot in the grand final, while the other three will compete in the petite final tomorrow on Saturday, May 18th at the ACC Championship. Clemson placed third three times and fourth twice.

Clemson started the day with the 3v8 race at 8:05 a.m. where they finished fourth at 7:09.066. Next, Clemson’s 1v8 gave Clemson their first bid to the grand final with a third place finish at 6:44.840. The Tigers 2v8 then finished fourth at 7:04.362 for a spot in the petite final. Clemson’s 1v4 earned the Tigers second spot in the grand final as they finished third at 7:36.823. The 2v4 for Clemson finished the day strong as they also earned a spot in the grand final with a third place finish at 8:00.434.

New York May Auctions Get Off to a Slow Start as Pricey Bacon Misfires During Sotheby’s $267.3 M. Sale

Sotheby’s kicked off this month’s marquee New York auctions with two sales on Monday evening, one devoted to established contemporary artists, the other to emerging ones. Together, the two auctions brought in $267.3 million, for a total squarely within its presale estimate of $241.8 million to $350.4 million.

Going into the sale, Sotheby’s at least had a leg up on Christie’s, whose website was still down on Monday, reportedly following a cyberattack. But the action at Sotheby’s this evening was relatively sluggish, doing little to dispel fears of a market slowdown.

Monday evening’s most expensive lot was Francis Bacon ’s 1966 painting Portrait of George Dyer Crouching , the first of 10 full-scale portraits by Bacon depicting his lover George Dyer. The work on offer had been in the same collection for 54 years, having sold to its consignor in 1970, just four years after Bacon finished it. It came to auction with a $50 million high estimate , a number that seemed poised to put the painting among the most expensive ones by Bacon ever sold publicly.

Unfortunately for Sotheby’s, it was a big flop, failing even to meet its low estimate; it ended up selling for $27.7 million. (All figures reported here include premium, unless noted otherwise.) Murmurs abounded; many seemed awed by this hyped work’s implosion on the block.

Highs and Lows in “Now” Sale

The evening started out with more modest sums in the Sotheby’s 18-lot “The Now” sale, devoted to the ultra-contemporary category, referring to emerging artists and ones just gaining momentum at auction.

Eighteen lots were due to be offered, but one, a Cecily Brown painting, was withdrawn before the sale’s start. Sixteen of the lots sold, most of them performing respectably, and about half selling above their estimates with premium.

Kerry James Marshall’s 2005 painting Vignette #6 achieved the top price in the sale in its first time at auction. The consignor had acquired the piece at Jack Shainman Gallery in 2005.

Expectations for this painting ran high, since another from Marshall’s “Vignette” series had sold in 2019 for $18.5 million at Sotheby’s, to become his second-most-expensive painting at auction. This painting, which came to auction with a guarantee, didn’t perform quite so well, hammering at $6.5 million, $500,000 below its $7 million low estimate. With premium, however, that sum rose to $7.48 million.

The other major disappointment was Jeffrey Gibson’s evening sale debut, which came following the inauguration of the artist’s US Pavilion at the Venice Biennale last month. That should’ve provided ballast for his market—Simone Leigh’s 2022 pavilion certainly did for hers that year—but when Gibson’s 2014 sculpture Always After Now came up for sale at Sotheby’s, it failed to garner a single bid. It was the only work that went unsold in tonight’s “Now” sale.

The big story of the evening was a 2019 Justin Caguiat painting called The saint is never busy . This young New York–based painter’s abstractions had only ever appeared at auction twice in the past, and Sotheby’s clearly thought this one would do well, awarding it the primo Lot 1 slot. The house’s expectations were not wrong: a six-minute bidding war pushed the painting far beyond its $300,000 estimate, more than tripling that sum to sell for $1.09 million, a new record for Caguiat.

The other big record in this sale was that for Lucy Bull, whose abstractions have already done well at auction. Her 2020 painting 16:10 quickly zoomed past its $700,000 high estimate—which was, admittedly, a conservative number, given that her work had already sold for $1.76 at Sotheby’s Hong Kong this past October. It seemed at times as though auctioneer Phyllis Kao could barely keep up. “Everybody gets a turn,” she said, smiling as the painting surpassed the $1 million mark. It sold for $1.81 million, more than doubling its estimate to set a new benchmark for the 34-year-old artist.

A Low-Risk Contemporary Sale Sees Many Disappointments

Even though the “Now” sale generated some momentum, the contemporary sale couldn’t quite sustain the excitement of the evening’s first hour.

Even discounting the underwhelming Bacon sale, other star lots also failed to deliver. A Richard Diebenkorn abstraction from his “Ocean Park” series, initially pegged to sell for as much as $25 million, failed to find a buyer altogether. The consignor, according to Artnet News , was Lorenzo Fertitta, who bought it at Christie’s New York in 2018 for $23.9 million, at the time an auction record for the artist. On Monday, auctioneer Oliver Barker had to fish for bids even to bring it above its $14.8 million low estimate.

A 1964 Lucio Fontana “Concetto Spaziale” painting from the Rachofsky Collection threatened to topple the artist’s record altogether; with a $30 million high estimate, it didn’t even hammer at its $20 million low (though it met that sum with premium). The hammer price, $19.7 million, rose to just under $23 million—a respectable figure, since it still makes the painting one of Fontana’s most expensive works, but one lower than the house had hoped for.

A shaped canvas by Frank Stella, Ifafa I (1964), appeared on the block shortly after another big Stella sale. This past November, a Stella from the collection of the late Chara Schreyer, Honduras Lottery Co. (1962), sold for $18.7 million—at the time, Stella’s second-highest price at auction. Artnet News ’s Katya Kazakina reported that Ifafa I came to the block from none other than dealer Irving Blum, whose Ferus Gallery showed Stella during the ’60s, just as he had achieved renown. The painting hit the block with a $14 million low estimate and hammered right at that amount. Not even the artist’s death earlier this month did much to raise interest.

This was a low-risk sale, with 25 of the 35 lots coming to auction with guarantees, meaning that many of the works had been presold. But even by that measure, this sale left something to be desired.

There were some successes. A collaborative 1984 painting by Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat set a new record for the duo’s series, $19.4 million, squarely within the work’s $15 million–$20 million estimate. On the Nota Bene podcast earlier this week, art adviser Lock Kresler, a director at Helly Nahmad gallery in London, said this one is considered to be among the best in the series; the highest price paid for a painting in the series at auction is $11.4 million, achieved in 2014. The consignor bought this one at Sotheby’s in 2010 for just $2.7 million.

Four guaranteed Joan Mitchell paintings headed to auction at Sotheby’s on Monday, with three of them selling above estimate. The priciest of them, her abstraction Noon (ca. 1969), sold for $22.6 million. The consignor bought the painting just eight years ago, at Christie’s for less than half that.

Faith Ringgold, who died this past April , saw a new record when Dinner at Gertrude Stein’s: The French Collection Part II, #10 (1991), a quilted painting from the artist’s prized “French Collection” series, came up for sale as the auction’s first lot. It came from the collection of Stanley and Mikki Weithorn, who lent it to a recent Ringgold retrospective. The painting was given a $700,000–$1 million estimate—double the artist’s $461,000 auction record, set at Swann Auction Galleries in 2015. Clearly, Sotheby’s expected Dinner at Gertrude Stein’s to reset the artist’s record, and it did, selling for $1.57 million.

The flurry of bids for Ringgold’s painting made this work a rarity in this sale, where the buying activity seemed depressed. By the time an Alice Neel portrait of poet and photographer Gerard Malanga came up for sale, Barker was doing his best to stoke any energy at all. “It’s like extracting teeth, my goodness,” he said before the work sold for a within-estimate $2.24 million. That remark might have been said at many different points tonight.

Still, the evening ended on a positive note when Yayoi Kusama’s 1958 painting The Pacific Ocean sold for $4.66 million, triple its high estimate. The work came to sale after its owner, curator Alice Denney, died last year at 101; seven minutes of bidding preceded that sale. “We’re going to have to forever put Kusama for the last lot!” Barker yelped. By that point, however, a good number of attendees had left for the evening, missing this rare moment of excitement.

After three hours, anyone who stayed until the end of the sale was probably hungry. But instead of the usual assortment of cheese, crackers, and charcuterie offered to guests, there were only empty champagne glasses.

When ARTnews asked a Sotheby’s staffer about the change, they simply replied, “the market has changed.”
