Sanlorenzo SX112: without limits

Désirée sormani.

The SX112 from San Lorenzo represents a new type of yacht . On board the barriers fall with impressive design and engineering solutions, the boat opens out and enters into a total relationship with everything surrounding it . With its 34.16 meters it is the flagship and further development of an innovative crossover line, the SX , launched in 2017 by the shipyard based in Ameglia (with the first SX88 model). “The SX crossover line is the perfect example of Sanlorenzo ’s sartorial outlook. A range that arises from the constant dialogue between the company and its yacht owners and has led it to create a project unprecedented in yachting, to meet the new needs of a constantly evolving market,” says Cavalier Massimo Perotti , Sanlorenzo ’s executive chairman.

The concept of the SX crossover line is the work of the architect Luca Santella , a former athlete and expert sailor, while the external lines, as with the previous model SX76 , were developed by Zuccon International Project . “It’s an example of organic architecture , with its sinuous forms recalling the shapes of marine mammals. In designing its lines we developed a concept of synthesis, creating the necessary signs,” explains Bernardo Zuccon . The stern is the iconic area of this watercraft: a spacious beach space of some 90 square meters, which expands markedly with the sides that fold down into the sea. And the extensive use of glass on board also plays a primary role: the innovative wheelhouse positioned on the flybridge can be fully closed and air-conditioned by electrically operating the windows or else left open. The saloon on the main deck is also enclosed by floor-to-ceiling windows that shed natural light from all sides.

The interiors bear the signature of Piero Lissoni , since 2018 Sanlorenzo ’s art director . He has interpreted them not only with original solutions in pleasure-boating but also functional innovations for a new livability. The main deck is conceived as an open space : a single environment from stern to bow with seamless continuity between inside and outside. “Aboard the SX112 we’ve brought an even more architectural approach, connecting spaces exactly as in a building through technological openings that connect the interior and exterior and vice versa. In fact, we’ve built a floating villa,” explains the architect. “The vertical connection is fundamental on board, so I decided to insert a surprising design in the stairway. This means there are two focal elements : the open spaces and the stairway .

The interior is defined by soft and neutral colors flooded, on all sides, by natural light that creates a warm atmosphere with a domestic flavor. In perfect Lissoni style, a combination of refinement and simplicity , the furnishings selected from the catalogues of important Italian design companies ( B&B Italia, Boffi, Cassina,   Flos, FontanaArte, Glas Italia, Living Divani, Oluce, TechnoGym, Vitra are the firms involved) do not adapt to the spaces but freely arranged, as in a house, being combined to create the utmost fusion .

Sanlorenzo - SX88 Motor Yacht

2017 The project for the Sanlorenzo SX88 new crossover yacht comes from a simple idea: designing the interior as an open space. With its loft-living aesthetic and easy access to the sea, the boat boasts a breathtaking factor that could mark the beginning of a whole new genre. By using a totally innovative solution, Piero Lissoni re-interprets the nautical concept of space, to create some sort of wide, tall sea-loft, with no rigid separations between the internal parts, thanks to a flexible layout. With an open kitchen beside the dining room and near floor-to ceiling windows facing the sea, Lissoni’s style emerges almost in every element. Sofas, tables and other furniture, ranging from icons of great masters to objets trouvés, are all free-standing and can be rearranged at will, providing an elegant mix up with a domestic flavour. 2017 Winner of "Most avant-garde yacht", World Yacht trophie Photographer - Tommaso Sartori

Sanlorenzo and Piero Lissoni set a new course for the future of yachting industry

by Sunena V Maju Published on : Apr 28, 2023

After the luxurious maritime experience of a Sanlorenzo yacht at Milan Design Week 2022 , the Italian shipbuilding company returned to the Fuorisalone this year, with another installation marking the future of the yachting industry in the 18 th century courtyard of Università degli Studi di Milano (University of Milan). The installation titled La Macchina Impossibile by Piero Lissoni interprets the shipyard's relentless pursuit of technologically innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of yachting. In the context of the ensemble exhibition, Interni Design Re-Evolution , Sanlorenzo inserts itself with La Macchina Impossibile looking to the future and expressing a new, positive interaction between human beings and the environment.

The imposing metal sculpture, with propellers, serrated wheels and a huge mechanical structure, rests on a platform positioned in the centre of the 18 th century courtyard. The monumental sculpture not only adorns the central area of the university with its huge scale but also brings drama to the space with wheels and propellers that move amid light steam. This dynamic mechanism is made possible with the new hydrogen created from the green methanol system that Sanlorenzo is developing for the propulsion of its boats, in collaboration with Siemens Energy, based on the use of combined reformer/fuel cell modules. “This technology will power the on-board services on yachts between 24 and 73 metres in length, from 2024 on the new 50Steel. This cutting-edge project will represent the first concrete step towards the generation of carbon-neutral power from new-generation fuels for the entire sector, making Sanlorenzo an absolute forerunner on the road to sustainable yachting,” shares the company.

Talking to STIR during Milan Design Week 2023 , Massimo Perotti, president and chief executive officer of Sanlorenzo said, “From 2021 to today, the world (has) changed. So the idea to build a yacht which is respectful and cares about pollution was the right idea and goal. We anticipated the idea to catch the jump up of technology , which is now existing in the world. Everybody is investing money, time, and mind to build something that is not poisoning the air and the water.” Soleranzo, in an exclusive partnership with Siemens Energy, aims to produce the first 50m yacht with onboard hotellerie, powered by Methanol Fuel Cells and the first Sanlorenzo superyacht with diesel-electric propulsion by 2024.

The mechanism of the installation is made possible by the new hydrogen created from green methanol system that Sanlorenzo is developing for the propulsion of its boats, in collaboration with Siemens Energy | La macchina impossibile | Sanlorenzo | STIRworld

Perotti then adds, “I met Piero Lissoni a few years ago and he told me that ‘you did a fantastic job by innovating your product. Your yachts are the best in design but now you have to communicate (that). You went from a zero to a 10 with the product, which was the most important thing. Now from a 10 to a 100, you are doing it by telling people.’ We are now trying to inform the community. People (are) coming here from all over the world, (and) will see that Sanlorenzo is producing the first yacht, that in 2024, will be in the water producing 100 kilowatts of energy, to work all the artillery of the yacht with hydrogen and oxygen.”

sanlorenzo yacht interni

La Macchina Impossibile , therefore, stands as a physical manifestation of these philosophies and initiatives that Sanlorenzo believes in. In Lissoni's interpretation, this complex machine sculpture, highly technological but defined in detail by skilled manual work just like a yacht, represents avant-garde research conducted by the shipyard to reduce the environmental impact of yachting.

In life, you have to catch the moment. At the beginning of 2010, our goal was design, art, and innovation in the design of the boat and we played hard for 10 years from 2010 to 2020, around this concept. – Massimo Perotti

Sanlorenzo introduced the world of design and architecture, to the yachting industry, entrusting the interior design of its yachts to authoritative names such as Dordoni Architetti, Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, Piero Lissoni, Patricia Urquiola and Studio Christian Liaigre. This intuition has brought new languages and styles on board, profoundly changing the interpretation of the space.

From 2020 to 2022, Sanlorenzo was the Institutional Patron of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice , the most important museum in Italy for 20 th century European and American art . In 2022, motivated by the desire to support, promote, and spread the Italian art system, Sanlorenzo became the main sponsor of the Italian Pavilion at the 59 th International Art Exhibition—La Biennale di Venezia. It was in 2021, at the request of the Perotti family, that the Sanlorenzo Foundation was established, with the purpose of supporting the minor Italian islands and the communities living there by financing projects and initiatives that contribute to their socio-cultural and economic development and environmental protection.

Sharing the future initiatives of the company, Perotti says, “We bought a nice villa in front of the Church of The Salute, often called the Health Church, and is under refurbishing. Designed by Pierro, by April 2024, we will do the christening of this 'House of Health,' which we will call Casa della Salute . In this villa with a garden, we will expand the Sanlorenzo Foundation, in order to be present with charity and to help the people who need (it), because I think when a company is successful and you make lots of money, you have to return a part of it to the society.”

Sanlorenzo’s ‘La Macchina Impossibile’ at the INTERNI Design Re-Evolution exhibition-event

Sanlorenzo , a pioneering shipyard in the responsible development of the yachting sector, returns to the FuoriSalone in Milan with a project that narrates, in a sophisticated and subtle way, the future of the propulsion of the yachts.

POSTED On 23.02.2023

At Design Week 2023, as part of the INTERNI DESIGN RE-EVOLUTION exhibition-event at the University of Milan, Sanlorenzo presents LA MACCHINA IMPOSSIBILE, an installation by Piero Lissoni that interprets the shipyard's relentless pursuit of technologically innovative solutions to reduce the yachting environmental impact.

La Macchina Impossibile is an imposing metal sculpture: a complex machine that is highly technological but defined in detail by skilful manual work, just like a yacht. Positioned in the centre of the 18th-century Courtyard , the entire structure rests on a backlit platform that enhances its mechanism made of propellers and serrated wheels.

These move thanks to new hydrogen system that Sanlorenzo is developing for the propulsion of its boats in collaboration with Siemens Energy, based on the use of combined green methanol reformer/fuel cell modules. This technology will power the hotellerie functions on yachts between 24 and 73 metres in length, from 2024 on the new 50Steel.

This cutting-edge project will represent the first concrete step towards the generation of carbon-neutral power from new-generation fuels for the entire sector, making Sanlorenzo a true forerunner on the road to sustainable yachting. The installation is immersed in a light steam that reproduces the effect of the turbine driven by the fuel cell system.

In the context of the ensemble exhibition Design Re-Evolution, the theme of which investigates Evolutionary Thinking as a tool for designing known and unknown, physical and digital, contemporary and futuristic territories, Sanlorenzo inserts itself with a project that looks to the future and expresses a new, positive interaction between human beings and the environment .

Style Edit: Italian luxury yacht builder Sanlorenzo at Art Basel Hong Kong 2024, showing its commitment to art, culture and sustainability through Casa Sanlorenzo – the future HQ of Sanlorenzo Arts

  • Sanlorenzo will display its artistic design visions by unveiling a custom project at Art Basel Hong Kong next week - before heading to Basel, Miami and Paris, and Design Week in Milan
  • The founding of Casa Sanlorenzo as its future cultural hub in Venice illustrates how its legacy could extend beyond the world of yachting to the realms of art, sustainability and community engagement

Italian custom luxury yacht builder Sanlorenzo sets sail on a new cultural venture by revealing the latest details regarding Casa Sanlorenzo at Art Basel Hong Kong this year.

Guided by its passion for transcending trends through its timeless custom luxury yacht designs, the shipyard injects the same dedication to excellence into Casa Sanlorenzo, the future headquarters of Sanlorenzo Arts, which is set to open its doors in Venice this year.

Sanlorenzo's art director, Piero Lissoni, brings this ethos in design and performance to every custom-built vessel. Tapping into more than six decades of know-how at the Italian shipyard, Lissoni has forged a new path, redefining the conventions of design and artistic expression in the realm of luxury superyachts.

Yacht lives of the rich and famous, from Jeff Bezos to Diane von Furstenberg

The art director's vision for bespoke vessels first appeared in the SX88 motoryacht at Cannes Yachting Festival 2017. Lissoni brings an approach that facilitates new potential nautical design scenarios, putting modern and elegant spins on classic yacht design that reflects Sanlorenzo's legacy.

Sanlorenzo Asia-Pacific, represented by Simpson Marine, brings this exquisite Italian tradition of luxury yachting to the region by offering Asian yacht owners exclusive opportunities to create bespoke vessels that bring whole new meaning to opulence at sea.

The celebration of Italian artistic and cultural tenets at the shipyard extends beyond the world of yachting. Sanlorenzo Arts, soon to be headquartered in Venice inside the beautiful confines of Casa Sanlorenzo, paves the way for the brand to take on a pivotal role in arts, culture and sustainability.

Sanlorenzo Arts is a culmination of Sanlorenzo's artistic dedication to design and an effort to take on socio-economic challenges through art. A celebration of culture, the programme offers educational events, conferences and conversations with artists.

The Italian shipyard chose Venice as the home of Casa Sanlorenzo as a sign of its commitment to sustainability. A founding member of the Fondazione Venezia Capitale Mondiale della SostenibilitA (Venice Sustainability Foundation), Sanlorenzo looks to spotlight the city in its efforts to redefine global standards for environmental sustainability.

Its efforts in sustainability are just one example of Casa Sanlorenzo's initiatives to enrich the cultural context of Venice in an effort to boost societal change through community engagement.

The group hopes to bring forth the same dedication to refinement, timeless design and arts through its unique lens as a luxury shipbuilder to the range of community outreach, sustainability, artists in residence and arts and culture programmes that Casa Sanlorenzo, as the headquarters of Sanlorenzo Arts, will offer.

As a further display of Sanlorenzo's artistic vision in design, the shipbuilder will unveil a custom project at Art Basel Hong Kong - as it has for several years. The brand perpetuates its presence at Design Week in Milan as well as Art Basel in Basel, Miami and Paris too, showcasing new custom projects at those esteemed arts and design events as well.

These custom projects, beyond being unique works of art, are first and foremost beacons of Sanlorenzo's timeless craftsmanship, originality and impeccable construction.

Riviera yachts and Sun Marine Team

Australia’s luxury motor yacht builder, Riviera, continues to grow in the Americas with the appointment of Sun Country Marine as representative in southern California.

Sun Country Marine has three iconic coastal locations – at San Diego, Dana Point and Newport Beach. The company celebrated its 30th anniversary at the end of last year by opening two additional coastal offices, at Marina Del Ray and a second office in Newport Beach.

We were particularly impressed by Riviera

Sun Country Marine CEO Mike Basso said: “We are delighted to join the Riviera family. We have a great synergy with Riviera in our commitment to quality and to owner care.

“We were particularly impressed by Riviera’s spectacular nine-model showcase during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show late last year. It demonstrated a genuine commitment to the highest level of presentation of quality motor yachts” said Mike Basso from Sun Country Marine.

“Riviera’s five unique collections across Flybridge, Sport Yachts, SUVs, Sports Motor Yachts and the classically styled Belize models offer the options our clients demand. Our commitment to ensuring clients can directly touch and inspect new motor yachts is borne out through the nine new Riviera motor yachts, including three SUV models and three Sport Yachts that are now in production. We also have two 39 Sports Motor Yachts and a 395 SUV that will be arriving in southern California in early 2019.”

“We are proud to join Riviera to display three new motor yachts at this weekend’s San Diego Boat Show. We will have 445 and 525 SUV models and a 4800 Sport Yacht for boating enthusiasts to inspect.”

Riviera CEO Wes Moxey said that Sun Country Marine has for many years demonstrated a thorough understanding of the motor yacht market in California and is held in high esteem.

Riviera has a large and loyal owner base in California

“Riviera has a large and loyal owner base in California and Sun Country Marine will provide powerful support and service to our existing owners as well as to a growing market of luxury motor yacht enthusiasts.

“Our world-renowned quality, luxury, innovation, blue-water sea-keeping abilities and superior owner support will be further enhanced with the appointment of Mike Basso and his Sun Country Marine team.”

Sun Country Marine offers three different locations : San Diego Yacht Center, Dana Point Yacht Center and Newport Beach.
