Boat Registration

Lough Erne

All craft with an engine capacity in excess of 10bhp on the Erne System must be registered with the Waterways Ireland Inspectorate.  Registration is free and you can register by visiting our Craft Registaion Portal .    Upon registering, you will be provided with a registration number that must be displayed in a prominent position on your boat. You need to inform Inspectorate immediately of any change in ownership.   A system of mutual recognition is in place, so boats registered on the Erne System, do not need to re-register when moving between the Shannon Navigation or the Shannon-Erne Waterway.

FAQs for Boat Owners

With the exception of some boats used on the inland waterways, there is no legal requirement to register boats based or used for recreational purposes in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and United Kingdom and associated territorial waters. There are however, a number of different registers available to boat owners in Ireland and this page aims to provide some information on these.

For a number of years the Irish Sailing provided an Irish Sailing Small Craft Registry Certificate to boat owners who needed some form of documentation when visiting foreign ports. This was not a Government endorsed document and during a consultation on other matters with the Department of Transport in 2014 the Department requested the Irish Sailing to cease operating their registry.

https://www.gov.ie/en/organisation-information/0fc5df-mercantile-marine-office-mmo/

The Irish Sailing is consolidating the various details currently held on boats belonging to Irish Sailing members in order to streamline the Irish Sailing’s several databases of craft, and to build a complete database of craft owned by Irish Sailing members. We will encourage members to apply for a Cert of ID which will incorporate all the services Irish Sailing members avail of in respect of their craft into a single document. This will include racing handicaps administered by Irish Sailing , racing sail numbers issued by Irish Sailing as the member national authority for World Sailing (formerly ISAF) and other services.

Certificates of Identity may be purchased through our online shop and the application form for this should be downloaded from the shop item.

Probably the most visible statement of Irish identity for sailing yachts; any sailing yacht based in Ireland is entitled to apply to the Irish Sailing for an IRL sail number. While it is essential for anyone planning on racing, most cruising boats will also have an IRL sail number. Once issued these sail numbers stay with the boat for life. Boats cruising abroad should also look at one of the other forms of registration detailed below.

IRL Sail Numbers

The Irish Register of Shipping provides state registration for all Irish vessels including recreational craft. It is accessed through the Mercantile Marine Office in the Department of Transport. The registration process includes affirmation of ownership, tax status and a survey of the vessel. Inclusion on this register provides full entitlements for vessels cruising outside of The Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and United Kingdom and associated territorial waters as set out in the Mercantile Marine Act 1955 Contact details for Mercantile Marine Office

There is currently no legal requirement to have a licence to drive either a Powerboat or a Jetski in Ireland. However, it would be preferable, if all operators of power-driven craft held a Powerboat Certificate. These can be obtained through various Sailing clubs and Commercial Watersports Centres throughout the country.

You should contact the Marine authority of the country/countries, you wish to visit.

I have been thinking of doing this with my UK Part 1 registered boat and I see there is a company: Irish Boat Registration Services, offering to arrange everything. Has anyone dealt with this company and was it OK?

I registered a boat on the Irish register 10 years ago and since then I've also registered a boat on the Jersey register Part 1. The procedure for both is quite similar although Jersey is much more streamlined as the Registry operates as a one-stop shop whereas in Ireland you have to deal with 3 separate government offices. That said I handled all the Irish registration procedure by e mail from Turkey apart from a couple of documents which had to be posted. The procedure for a tonnage survey sounds a lot more complicated than it is in reality. I've no experience of the company you mention and they may be excellent but I'd always be wary of dealing with a company whose only contact details are a gmail address and a mobile phone.

I just looked them up. Its a relatively new company. Set up at the end of 2019. I haven't heard about them. I see its run off a mobile phone number and a gmail account. There's a guy in Dublin called Brian Matthews. He's a marine surveyor, engineer, yachtmaster etc etc. He's well got in the marine business community here and would be a good person to call. If he knows them then he'd tell you what he thinks. He's a very forthright chap. His company is allspec marine. Maybe worth calling him. At the very least he would do the survey for you and you could handle the rest. Worth a phone call. Here's a link: Welcome

I registered a Beneteau 373 that I brought in from France 5 years ago. I did it myself. Yes , I found it quite job ! We had a Small Ships registry here in the past but it was scrapped. So registering a small pleasure yacht here is no different to a large ship as mentioned above. I had to get the boat " measured" by the "Marine Survey office"- even though all the specs are available on line. The surveyor comes on board and" measures " the boat. You end up with an " Irish Tonnage Certificate " and a hull "Carving Number" that must be etched or carved on a timber plate and fixed permanently to the Hull. He came back for a 2nd visit to verify the number was displayed! So the boat has to be available for inspection. I had to have documents showing proof of de registry in France and also proof that Vat was paid in France( The original Vat Invoice for the purchase of the boat) otherwise there was Vat due. So there was a bit paperwork involved! I seem to recollect at the time that there was talk of setting up some sort of Small Ships registry again here. It might be worth checking with the Irish Sailing Association, you will find them easily on line. They used to manage the old SSR here and I'm sure they would have the latest information. Good look with it , Kinsale 373

I am about to do this, I am told that it is easier than it is made to seem when looking at their websites. Bill of sale, proof of Vat and cert of de-registration suppossed ly is all that is required, and they arrange a surveyor but the lockdown may have an impact, these things are always easier if you can arrive at the counter in the office and smile... Of course I need to find the ships paperwork which is lost in my house somewhere...

Poignard said: Thanks Kinsale, the tonnage survey is the biggest problem. I am in England and my boat is in Brittany and no one can go anywhere! Will a French surveyor's measurements be acceptable to the Irish authorities? It seems odd that a yacht on part 1 of the British Register needs re-measuring when it must have been measured when first registered. Also I have the designers dimensioned plans to hand. Still, their country, their rules. Click to expand...

A pod of orcas has sunk a sailing yacht near the Strait of Gibraltar in the latest incident of killer whales attacking boats in these waters.

The orcas reportedly started attacking the yacht , Alboran Cognac, at around 9am local time on Sunday and sank it soon after.

Spain ’s maritime rescue service said on Monday that the yacht measured about 15m in length and had two passengers onboard.

The passengers felt sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the vessel. They made a call to the rescue service but were quickly found by an oil tanker and transported to safety.

This was the latest in a series of attacks by orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar .

Marine experts believe it is a subpopulation of about 15 orcas known as "Gladis” that is carrying out these attacks.

They are uncertain about the motive behind the attacks, however, with theories ranging from playful curiosity to competition for prey, particularly bluefin tuna.

Despite being referred to as killer whales, orcas belong to the dolphin family. They can grow up to eight metres long and weigh up to six tonnes.

Since May 2020, when attacks by orcas on ships in the region were first reported, research group GT Atlantic Orca, which monitors populations of the Iberian orcas, has documented nearly 700 such incidents.

In November last year, the crew of a yacht called Grazie Mamma faced a 45-minute ordeal when a pod of orcas targeted the boat’s rudder, causing it to sink in the Strait of Gibraltar. The crew members were rescued safely.

At the time experts wondered whether there was a more complex reason like trauma or revenge behind the attacks.

Some researchers said it may be that the orcas like the feel of the rudder. “What we think is that they’re asking to have the propeller in the face,” Renaud de Stephanis, president at the CIRCE Conservation Information and Research in Spain, said in an interview with NPR last year.

He added that when they encounter a sailboat without its engine on, “they get kind of frustrated and that’s why they break the rudder”.

Another hypothesis suggests that the behaviour might stem from a form of revenge possibly triggered by past traumatic encounters with fishing boats.

“I definitely think orcas are capable of complex emotions like revenge,” Monika Wieland Shields, director of the Orca Behavior Institute previously told NPR.

She said she doesn’t think “we can completely rule it out”.

Ship cancels stop in Spain over claims about Israel-bound cargo

Minister denies claims by left-wing politicians that vessel carrying armament to he used in gaza offensive.

A cargo vessel has chosen not to dock in Spain after left-wing politicians in the country said it was supplying weapons to Israel .

The Borkum, a German vessel sailing under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, cancelled a scheduled stop at the southern Mediterranean port of Cartagena following a political dispute over its cargo’s destination.

Politicians from the leftist Podemos and Sumar parties said it was carrying armament due to be used by Israel in its offensive against Hamas and that it should be inspected on arrival.

Podemos leader Ione Belarra said the Borkum was “suspected of carrying weapons to Israel for genocide”. Sumar, the junior partner in the Socialist-led government, called for state prosecutors to investigate the final destination of the cargo.

A pro-Palestinian organisation, Rescop, had flagged the Borkum’s imminent arrival in Spain, claiming that documents showed it was carrying 12.5 tons of missiles, as well as explosives and other material, all heading for the Israeli port of Ashdod.

Socialist transport minister Óscar Puente contradicted this information, saying that part of the cargo of the vessel was due to be delivered to a company in southern Spain, while the military materials making up the rest were due to continue to Slovenia, before being delivered to the Czech government.

“I don’t understand the controversy which has been stirred up,” said Mr Puente before the boat cancelled its stop in Cartagena. He said that those claiming it was heading to Israel may have misidentified the vessel and were guilty of being “deeply irresponsible”.

He hit back at suggestions, by Podemos and Sumar, that even if the cargo did go to the Czech Republic, it would end up in Israeli hands.

“In this country, the vast majority of people support the Palestinian cause and the Spanish government is unequivocally with the Palestinian cause,” said Mr Puente. “If there were a vessel carrying weapons and if we had some kind of proof – not unfounded suspicions — that the cargo was heading for Israel, then the Spanish government would, without a doubt, stop it.”

On Thursday, the government did just that, denying permission to dock to another vessel, the Marianne Danica, sailing under the Danish flag, because it was carrying armament from India to Haifa in Israel.

“The Middle East doesn’t need more weapons, it needs more peace,” said foreign minister José Manuel Albares, as he explained the decision, which was the first time Spain had refused entry to a vessel for this reason.

The Spanish and Irish governments have been in discussions to recognise the state of Palestine, with reports suggesting they could make an announcement, possibly with other countries, as soon as next week.

While the Spanish government has condemned the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel, it has been outspoken about its disapproval of Israel’s response, causing tensions between the two countries.

Earlier this month minister for social and consumer affairs Pablo Bustinduy wrote to Spanish companies in Israel calling on them to avoid contributing to the “genocide” being suffered by Palestinians. The Israeli embassy said the move “encourages Hamas”.

FWC identifies boater in Key Biscayne hit-and-run that killed Florida teen ballerina

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission has identified the person behind the wheel in the South Florida hit-and-run boating death of 15-year-old Ella Adler on Saturday.

Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, of Coral Gables was piloting a 42-foot Boston Whaler in Key Biscayne when officials say his boat struck Ella Riley Adler, 15, a ballerina with the Miami Ballet and granddaughter of U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Michael M. Adler. The teen had been wakeboarding behind another boat and was floating in the water, according to an FWC incident report released Wednesday.

The man piloting the boat that hit the girl sped off to the west without stopping, witnesses said. Adler was retrieved by the other boat but died of her injuries.

The vessel is in custody and Alonso is cooperating with the investigation, the FWC said in a release Tuesday .

Investigators said Tuesday it was unclear if Alonso knew Adler was there or was hit. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor. In a statement from Alonso's attorney Lauren Krasnoff, shared by Local10.com , Krasnoff said Alonso was unaware he hit anybody and does not drink.

"I will tell you that Bill, who has been boating for 50 years and is a very experienced boater who knows these waters, was out boating by himself on Saturday," Krasnoff said in the statement. "He has no knowledge whatsoever of having been involved in this accident. If he hit Ella that day, he certainly did not know it. Had Bill thought he hit anything, he absolutely would have stopped. But he did not at any point think that he had hit anything, let alone a person.

"He docked his boat in plain sight right behind his house," she said, "and did not even know there was an accident on the water that day until officers showed up at his door."

Witnesses or anyone with video footage or information should contact the FWC at 888-404-FWCC or 888-404-3922 or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS or 305-471-8477.

A total reward of up to $20,000 — $10,000 from Adler's family and a combined $10,000 from FWC and Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers — is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and successful prosecution of the driver of the hit-and-run boat incident.

What happened in the boating death of Ella Adler?

At about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11 (the day before Mother's Day), Adler and several others had been enjoying some recreational boating near the Nixon Beach Sandbar in Biscayne Bay, according to the incident report. Adler was wakeboarding behind a 42-foot 2017 Hanse Fjord yacht at the same time as an unidentified female on a wake surfboard.

The two people being towed fell into the water at different times and locations, the incident report said. Adler was wearing a life jacket and had the wakeboard still attached to her feet, an FWC official told NBC6 in Miami , when she was struck by a 42-foot 2020 Boston Whaler.

A witness said the boat did not appear to swerve or slow down when it hit the girl. The yacht towing her immediately spun around back to where she was and began broadcasting distress calls, the witness told NBC6.

Where was Ella Adler killed? Where is Nixon Beach Sandbar in Florida?

The Nixon Beach Sandbar is located in Biscayne Bay, Florida, west of Hurricane Harbor near Miami.

It's a popular destination for recreational boaters and fishing for its white sands and clear shallow waters, and it "turns into a wild party spot every weekend" full of yachts and catamarans, according to the boating site sail.me .

The area was named for former president Richard M. Nixon, who owned a home overlooking the water nearby.

Who is Ella Riley Adler of Florida?

Ella Adler was a freshman at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove and a ballerina with the Miami City Ballet. She is the granddaughter of Michael M. Adler, the current U.S. Ambassador to Belgium , according to the Miami Herald .

"We are heartbroken," the school said in a Facebook post Monday morning. "Ella Adler '27 shined in our classrooms and on our stages, and she embodied the mission of Ransom Everglades School. We wish peace and comfort to her family."

Adler appeared in more than 100 performances with the Miami Ballet, including "The Nutcracker," according to her Legacy.com obituary . In school, she performed on the dance team, acted in the school play "Chicago" and was a member of the Ransom Everglades Jewish Students Association.

"You were taken from us way too soon, and the world has been robbed of all the things you could have achieved," her father, Matthew, wrote in a letter read during a funeral service at Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach on Monday, the Miami Herald reported . "But you will always be here with us and your friends and family will carry your energy and spirit forever.”

First Lady Jill Biden paid her condolences in person Tuesday, according to a statement from the family.

"We are honored that the First Lady paid a shiva call to our family during this time of immense pain. We are touched by their support and love and we are proud to call the President and First Lady our friends for over 40 years," they said.

The girl's great-aunt Karen Adler started working in President Joe Biden's D.C. office in 1973 when he was still a junior senator from Delaware, according to Jewish Insider , and served as his national finance chair in 2008. Her brother Michael was confirmed as Ambassador to Belgium in 2021 .

Adler is survived by her parents Amanda and Matthew, her brother Jaden, and her sister Adalynn, grandparents Judy and Michael, and Susan and Michael Klaiman, along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.
