Sacramento firefighters extinguish houseboat fire on river near Discovery Park

Firefighters extinguished a houseboat fire early Thursday morning near Discovery Park, the Sacramento Fire Department said.

Crews were dispatched around 3:43 a.m. to the area after receiving reports of multiple people on a burning houseboat that was floating near the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers, Sac Fire said. First responders searched the area as part of a rescue operation and found no one on the houseboat or in the nearby water.

"We did not find any victims on the boat," said Cap. Justin Sylvia with the Sacramento Fire Department. "Our rescue boat went up and down the Sacramento River, looking for any type of splashing or anyone in distress on the shoreline. They were unable to locate anyone, so we still are unclear if anyone was actually on this boat at the time of the fire."

Firefighters then turned their attention to battling the flames, which was challenging because the houseboat was not tied down, fire crews said. Spraying it with water hoses caused the houseboat to move into a cove, so firefighters used pike poles -- which are commonly used by fire crews -- to push it closer to the dock.

"It was still on fire when were pushing it," Sylvia explained. "We don’t want to get our boat next to it because our boat is inflatable and we didn’t want to melt any of our boat."

Eventually, firefighters secured the boat to the dock and put out the flames.

Officials said there is no known environmental impact at this time. No injuries were reported either.

The U.S. Coast Guard will be called to track down the houseboat's owner and will tow the boat away if they are not found, Sac Fire said.

"We come across every type of situation you can imagine as the Sacramento Fire Department and we just get it done," Sylvia said of Thursday's firefighting effort. "We just make sure all of our members are safe, there’s no environmental impact, and that the public is safe."
