Del Rey Yacht Club, Catalina Harbor, Santa Catalina Island was founded in 1952 and has been at its present location on the mainland at 3900 Palawan Way, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292 since 1965. In addition to their mainland location, the club leases a facility in Cat Harbor on Santa Catalina Island.
The club-owned and operated "Cat Harbor" facility is located on the Southwestern side of Santa Catalina Island. DRYC's beautiful overseas spot is situated between rising mountains on either side, surrounded by an expansive stretch of water, protected by a narrow opening to the inlet. This great getaway location is available year-round and free of charge to all DRYC members. Weekend cruises make good use of the many available moorings near the dingy dock and the private beachfront compound where there are outdoor gas barbecues, a full service kitchen, picnic table seating for over 250, heads and fresh, hot water showers. The Club runs at least 3-4 cruises to Cat Harbor every summer.

A wonderful club, particularly for older people, in so many ways. Assistant manager Archie, servers including but not limited to Allen, Kyle and Danny, accountant Jerilynn are all wonderful. Why not 5-star? The MANAGER can be brutally insensitive and money-mongering...in the face of a loved one's death, or other trauma, entirely inflexible (regarding any temporary payment adjustment) and emotionally tone deaf. Enjoy. But beware this management style. I don't know how or why they keep her. I guess she brings in money.
I love my club, the other reviews are correct in that our staff is amazing and accommodating. You always feel the special treatment of a private club vs. a public restaurant/bar. They rarely can't accommodate a special request and do it with a smile. From Max, Lisa and Archie at the front to Kyle, Allen, Danny, Javier and Al taking care of your food and drink needs it never disappoints. Most Fridays I find myself wanting to test Allen's Tiki drink of the week and recently fell in love with the Japanese slipper (delicious refreshing Midori drink . Love the new dinning room menu and it's true we have the best fillet of Sole I have had. Activities for all kinds, movie nights, game nights, dancing with live bands, family cruises, races and dock parties. Do your self a favor and come and enjoy DRYC.
Incredible food and service! Javier is so welcoming and helpful. I'm too young for alcohol but I heard Alan makes the best Mai Tais ever! I would recommend the filet of sole. The server hailey is very sweet as well and I was so grateful to have her take my order. Join the yacht club! Such a good decision, this is the one.
Wonderful Sunday Buffet!! Lots of choices ! Very clean ! Great taste! Great Service !!! Valet parking if you want!
Been a happy member since 1995. Best Club around bar none. Clubhouse, docks and grounds provide a wonderful space and the friendly members complete the DRYC experience. No boat? No problem! Come for a visit and check it out.
I joined Del Rey Yacht Club over 20 years ago and it was the best decision I could have made. Now I am retired and get to enjoy the Club even more. I keep my boat at its wonderful docks in the Marina and also get to enjoy the Catalina Harbor facility at Catalina Island. You could not ask for more.
Great private yacht club with amenities such as pool, bar, restaurant, etc. that outshines all its competitions in Marina Del Rey.
Del Rey Yacht Club is the premier yacht club in Marina del Rey. The club is steep in tradition, with many 2nd and 3rd generation members making Del Rey Yacht Club the focal point of their family's activities. There is something for everyone, from sailing to angling to the various social events. The calendar is constantly providing new and exciting things to do. Del Rey Yacht Club has a great dining room and vibrant bar with delicious food and drink to tempt everyone. The club's clubhouse facility is second to none. The club has a large parking lot complete with boat hoist to make launching small craft easy. The club's facility on Catalina Island makes the several cruises there great fun. I've enjoyed Del Rey Yacht Club for many years. I'm sure you would enjoy it as well!
We enjoy the bar and casual food scene here. The club has a great view of the marina and many beautiful boats. Danny is the best. Alan and Al are wonderful too.
Danny, Al, and Allen are some of the best people I have ever met. We've been members here for years and we come here now in large part just to catch up with them. They greet us with a smile and a generous pour. In this big city it's really nice to have a place where everybody knows your name. Highly recommend membership here, and even more highly recommend that you come by when Danny is working the bar!
This is a great yacht club with so much great history to it. Wonderful views and facilities. Very friendly members who treat one another like family. Also, very friendly and knowledgeable bar tenders. Not just the Marina del Rey facility is wonderful, but there is also another great facility in Cat Harbor, Catalina Island. Great place to enjoy a very relaxing cruise!

Welcome to Catalinas of
Santa Monica Bay
A Sailing Group of Catalina Sailboat Owners. Founded in 1990.
Catalinas of Santa Monica Bay started as the Catalina-36 Fleet #1. It currently has over one hundred members who are dedicated to promoting the Corinthian spirit of sailing.
The majority of boats in our Fleet are based in Marina del Rey in Southern California, but we also have members based in King Harbor (Redondo Beach), Cabrillo Marina (San Pedro) and Newport Beach. Our members are predominantly cruisers and day sailors although we participate as a fleet in several organized races each year: The C-36 Nationals when hosted on the West Coast; the Oxnard to Marina del Rey Race hosted by the Channel Islands Yacht Club and Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club.
In Southern California we are fortunate to have a group of eight islands called the Channel Islands. The closest one to Marina del Rey is Catalina which is about thirty-two miles due south. Our Fleet often has weekend trips to various coves at the Island. See Cruises and Events.
Our meetings are held at the Del Rey Yacht Club on the 4th Thursday of the month. In addition to being a social evening and business meeting, we invite local experts to our meetings to share their knowledge and experience from anchoring to yacht maintenance and everything in between.
Because our boats are essentially alike (with improvements made through the years by Catalina Yachts), our members have experienced similar problems and share solutions through speakers, discussions at meetings and in our newsletter's "Tech Talk." We also have an e-mail Discussion Group, limited to our current members.
The Fleet invites owners of all-size Catalinas to our monthly meetings to meet our friendly members where camaraderie is our specialty and safe boating is our goal. See Reasons to Join.
If you would like more information about our Fleet or are interested in membership, please email our Membership Chair Gisela Dawson at [email protected]
Ahoy There!
The Catalina Island Yacht Club is one of the oldest and most unique yacht clubs in Southern California, with a history rich in the lore and tradition of the Island.
In 1893, the Banning brothers, original owners of the Island, formed the first yacht club on the Island, the Catalina Yacht Club, primarily for the use of Islanders like themselves. For reasons unknown, the Club failed, and it was a decade later, in 1903, that boating residents of the Island attempted another organizing effort; this time founding the Sophia Yacht Club on the approximate site of the present Club. SYC’s purpose was to provide a dinghy landing and gathering point for boat owners, and the Club was apparently quite active until the great fire of 1915, which razed the town and its bayside facilities.
Fortunately, the Sophia Yacht Club pilings were spared, and for several years, the area was used as a temporary mooring site for boat repairs and as a primitive dinghy landing. Then, in 1924, Tuna Club members Art Sanger and James Jump, yielding to the imploring of their wives, decided that the Island needed a social club to complement the Tuna Club’s emphasis on sport and trophy fishing. They turned up thirty yachtsmen willing to pay the $100 initiation fee and dues, plus $400 on a promissory note, for improved marital relations with their hitherto neglected wives. Hollywood legends became frequent members of the Club. These included James Cagney, Johnny Weismuller, Darryl F. Zanuck, Walter Huston, Tom Mix, world famous violinist Jascha Heifetz and many more.
Catalina Island Yacht Club has plaques to recognize Hollywood Stars that were Members of the Club. In addition to names above Ed McMahon, Steve Skinner, & Milton “Shorty” Rogers were Members. Ed was most famous as Johnny Carson’s side kick and announcer on The Tonight Show. Steve produced 1,000 hits including the ABC News. Shorty was one of the principal creators of West Coast Jazz. George Schlatter was a member and a longtime producer in Hollywood. One of his many major hits was “Laugh In”.
On August 24, 1924, the Catalina Island Yacht Club held its first Opening Day in its newly completed clubhouse, under the leadership of Commodore Jump. The Club has operated continuously ever since, except for a brief period during the war years of 1942-45, when it was occupied by the Merchant Marine and used as a training facility. The Club was returned to its Membership in late 1945. The Club presently numbers approximately 180 Members, many of whom own moorings in Avalon Harbor. There is an active year-round social calendar, with emphasis on the Cruising Season from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Club is a member in good standing of the Southern California Yachting Association, and the Southern California Cruiser Association.

CHARTERING IN LOS ANGELES
The coastal playground of Los Angeles, Marina del Rey, is a yachter’s paradise known for its bustling life of water related activities. One may choose to bask in the Californian year-round sunshine aboard a yacht’s sunbed, or go ashore to experience the famous laid-back, California vibe along the famous coastal Venice boardwalk – a coastal walk that runs along the Californian coast from Marina del Rey to the Santa Monica Pier, full of stores and food stands.
Los Angeles (Marina del Rey), California, is North America’s largest man-made small-craft harbor is home to approximately 5,000 boats and is the major sailing and water-related recreation destination in the greater Los Angeles area. Its Boat Marina offers a picturesque mix of charming waterways and colorful boats and a handful of waterfront restaurants and is berth to most luxury yachts in Los Angeles.
Please note that your YachtLife charter specialist will be able to assist in planning your bespoke itinerary in Marina del Rey, so the below should be considered as inspiration for your Los Angeles yacht charter . Additionally, we have created a 7-day Southern California yachting itinerary you may enjoy.
Visit the Fisherman’s Village
One of Marina del Rey’s biggest tourist attractions is the Fisherman’s Village, located right at the marina’s entrance and built in a style similar to a fishing village in New England. It consists of five vividly painted wooden buildings, commercial boat docks, a water fountain, a lighthouse, and a waterfront promenade from which you have a panoramic view of the full harbor. Since most Los Angeles yacht charters depart from Marina del Rey, all those who choose to explore the Southern California coast will definitely get acquainted with this California yacht marina.
Lounge in the Del Rey Yacht Club
Marina del Rey is also home to the notable Del Rey Yacht Club . It is a huge marina front property where guests are able to dine in luxury, partake in water related activities or simply lounge by the pool.
Cruise Along Venice Beach
When you opt for a private boat charter in Los Angeles, you will most definitely board your yacht at Marina del Rey, one of the most famous marinas in Southern California. Once aboard your yacht, as you cruise out of Marina del Rey, you will encounter the famous Venice Beach Boardwalk that runs along Venice Beach and connects Marina del Rey to Santa Monica Pier. As you lounge on your yacht, you will be able to observe the famous LA scene: musicians, singers, jugglers, acrobats, mimes, comics, magicians, prophets and fortune-tellers are some of the more conventional entertainers on offer along the 3 mile long sidewalk.
Enjoy Santa Monica Pier
From Marina del Rey, it is only a short 30 minute cruise to Santa Monica Pier. If yachting with kids, take the day to explore this iconic destination in the Los Angeles coast. Tender ashore to enjoy Pacific Park, a mini-amusement park with a Ferris Wheel, a small roller coaster and some other small rides and the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium.
Go Whale & Dolphin Watching
Keep a watch out for dolphins and whales as you explore Santa Monica Bay; from Marina del Rey it is possible to go whale watching. Set sail through the bay and follow the seasonal gray whale migration during the winter months for a chance to see sea turtles, porpoises, sea lions, dolphins, giant mola mola, and minke whales.
Soak up the Hollywood Glamor in Malibu
For a slightly longer cruise, sail over from Marina del Rey to Malibu. Known as the home of many Hollywood movie stars and others associated with the entertainment industry, Malibu is also famous for its warm, sandy beaches. Drop anchor and tender ashore to spend the day lounging in the sun amidst the backdrop of beachfront mega mansion and later enjoy sushi at Nobu Malibu .
Check out Catalina Island
One of the perks of chartering a private yacht in Los Angeles is the ability to explore one of Southern California’s natural beauties: the Channel Islands. An eight island archipelago along the Santa Barbara Channel in the Pacific Ocean, just off the Southern Californian coast, and the perfect spot for a charter vacation.
Rent a yacht in Los Angeles to sail to one of the Channel Islands, Catalina Island, an island known for its wildlife, dive sites and Mt. Orizaba. The cruise from Los Angeles to Catalina Island should take around two hours. Drop anchor at the resort town of Two Harbors for a fun day snorkeling in clear waters to observe Catalina’s thriving marine life, take the jet ski out for a spin or step ashore at the palm tree and cabana lined Descanso Beach in the beautiful Avalon Bay.
Visit the Channel Islands National Park
A Yacht Rental in Los Angeles will allow you to explore the Channel Islands. One should depart early in the morning to the Channel Islands National Park, a marine sanctuary with a rugged landscape full of natural arches and huge cliffs soaring dramatically from the ocean. Plan to spend the day cruising through the National Park and exploring the unique wildlife – there are many species of animal that can’t be found anywhere else, before returning to the mainland.
Yachting in Los Angeles will prove to be an experience not to be missed and will make for lifelong memories for you and your guests. With a LA yacht charter you will enjoy this stunning part of the world as it was meant to be seen – by the water, as you explore the diversity this region has to offer from its glamour spots of Santa Barbara and Malibu to its impressive natural beauty in the Channel Islands. Lounge aboard your luxury boat rental as you bask in the year-round Californian sun and experience the exclusive Californian lifestyle.

COMMODORE'S MESSAGE
Welcome to 2024 at Del Rey Yacht Club! I am happy to be guiding the Club through this exciting year as your Commodore. First a little of my personal history at DRYC. My cousin, Joe Weiss, was one for the founders when the Club was started in 1952, and was Commodore in 1956. My parents and family joined in 1959, and my Dad was Commodore in 1976. I joined with my family in 1975. Now I am carrying on the family tradition as your Commodore for 2024. Del Rey Yacht Club is a very active Club, as it always has been. This coming year will be no different, starting with our youngest members, better known as the Juniors. These young members, in our many junior programs, learn to sail and acquire many skills and self-confidence. Most of them go on to race under the Club burgee, and in many cases, race under our burgee around the world. Then there is our adult sailing program. This is one of the reasons that this Club was founded. We participate in a multitude of inter-club races, along with hosting many of our own. We also have boats available for our members to use at no charge. These include J-22s, Lasers, Lidos, Kayaks, and Paddle boards. For a small charge, members can use our electric Duffy. Our shinning star is the facility on Catalina Island, in Catalina Harbor. This facility is open all year for all of our members to use. There are moorings in the bay, a dock where members can tie up their dinghy, and the facility is a fully-equipped picnic ground. This facility is where the Club holds many cruses during the year. For those members who are not inclined to go to sea, our Club has one of the best social and educational programs. We also have a beautiful pool, full food services, and a Pickleball court. You can see that Del Rey Yacht Club is really a full service club. We are a member-owned club, and all volunteer. This means that the Club is run by people that really have the Club in their best interests. This all makes for a Club that the members fully enjoy. Due to the dedication of its members, this year will be no different than any other year, making it one of the premier yacht clubs in the world.

Dec 10, 2018. Just 20 miles south of Los Angeles is Santa Catalina Island, a natural and historic paradise set against a major urban landscape.
